Nārada said: When the Goddess Durgā vanished and the gods returned to their abodes, what happened next?

kathaM menAgirIzau ca tepAte paramantapaH ॥ kathaM sutA'bhavattasya menAyAntAta tadvada ॥ 2 ॥
O dear, how did Menā and the lord of the mountains perform the great penance? How did he beget a daughter of Menā. Please narrate.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ vipravarya sutazreSTha zRNu taccaritaM mahat ॥ praNamya zaMkaraM bhaktyA vacmi bhaktivivarddhanam ॥ 3 ॥
Brahmā said: O best of brahmins, O most excellent of my sons, listen to that great account. After bowing to Śiva with devotion I shall narrate that story which increases devotion.

When Viṣṇu and other gods returned after instructing him, the lord of the mountains and Menā performed a great penance.

aharnizaM zivAM zambhuM cintayantau ca dampatI ॥ samyagAredhaturnityaM bhaktiyuktena cetasA ॥ 5 ॥
Meditating on Śivā and Śiva day and night with devout mind, the couple worshipped them continuously.

giripriyAtIva mudAnarca devIM zivena sA ॥ dAnandadau dvijebhyazca sadA tattoSahetave ॥6॥
The beloved of the mountain worshipped the goddess along with Śiva, joyously. She gave charitable gifts always to the brahmins for their satisfaction.

caitramAsaM samArabhya saptaviMzativatsarAn ॥ zivAM sampUjayAmAsApattyArthinyanvahaM ratA ॥ 7 ॥
Desirous of obtaining a child, she worshipped Śivā everyday for twenty-seven years beginning it in the month of March-April.

aSTamyAmupavAsantu kRtvAdAnnavamItithau ॥ modakairbalipiSTaizca pAyasairgandhapuSpakaiH ॥ 8 ॥
bserving a fast on the eighth day of the lunar fortnight, she made charitable gifts of sweets, offerings of oblation rice cakes, puddings and fragrant flowers on the ninth day.

गङ्गायामौषधिप्रस्थे कृत्वा मूर्तिं महीमयीम् ॥ उमायाः पूजयामास नानावस्तुसमर्पणैः ॥९॥
gaGgAyAmauSadhiprasthe kRtvA mUrtiM mahImayIm ॥ umAyAH pUjayAmAsa nAnAvastusamarpaNaiH ॥9॥
She made clay idol of the Goddess and worshipped her by offering various things on the banks of the Gaṅgā in Auṣadhiprastha.

कदाचित्सा निराहारा कदाचित्सा धृतव्रता ॥ कदाचित्पवनाहारा कदाचिज्जलभुग्ह्यभूत् ॥ 2-3-5-१० ॥
kadAcitsA nirAhArA kadAcitsA dhRtavratA ॥ kadAcitpavanAhArA kadAcijjalabhughyabhUt ॥ 2-3-5-10 ॥
On some days she observed a complete fast. On some days she observed sacred rites. Some days wind alone constituted her food and some days she drank only water.

शिवाविन्यस्तचेतस्का सप्तविंशतिवत्सरान् ॥ निनाय मेनका प्रीत्या परं सा मृष्टवर्चसा ॥ ११ ॥
zivAvinyastacetaskA saptaviMzativatsarAn ॥ ninAya menakA prItyA paraM sA mRSTavarcasA ॥ 11 ॥
With her mind fixed on Śivā, Menā passed twenty seven years with pleasure and brilliant lustre.

saptaviMzativarSAnte jaganmAtA jaganmayI ॥ suprItAbhavadatyarthamumA zaMkarakAminI ॥ 12 ॥
At the end of twenty-seven years, Umā the beloved of Śiva, the mother of the world and identical with the universe became highly delighted.

अनुग्रहाय मेनायाः पुरतः परमेश्वरी ॥ आविर्बभूव सा देवी सन्तुष्टा तत्सुभक्तितः ॥१३॥
anugrahAya menAyAH purataH paramezvarI ॥ AvirbabhUva sA devI santuSTA tatsubhaktitaH ॥13॥
The goddess Śivā, delighted by her good devotion appeared in front of Menā in order to bless her.

दिव्यावयवसंयुक्ता तेजोमण्डलमध्यगा॥ उवाच विहसन्ती सा मेनां प्रत्यक्षतां गता ॥ १४ ॥
divyAvayavasaMyuktA tejomaNDalamadhyagA॥ uvAca vihasantI sA menAM pratyakSatAM gatA ॥ 14 ॥
Appearing to her in a form of divine limbs through a lustrous zone, she smilingly said to Menā.

देव्युवाच ॥ वरं ब्रूहि महासाध्वि यत्ते मनसि वर्तते ॥ सुप्रसन्ना च तपसा तवाहं गिरिकामिनि ॥ १५ ॥
devyuvAca ॥ varaM brUhi mahAsAdhvi yatte manasi vartate ॥ suprasannA ca tapasA tavAhaM girikAmini ॥ 15 ॥
The Goddess said: O beloved of the mountain, I am delighted by your penance. O chaste lady, tell me what you desire in your mind.

यत्प्रार्थितं त्वया मेने तपोव्रतसमाधिना ॥ दास्ये तेऽहं च तत्सर्वं वाञ्छितं यद्यदा भवेत् ॥१६॥
yatprArthitaM tvayA mene tapovratasamAdhinA ॥ dAsye te'haM ca tatsarvaM vAJchitaM yadyadA bhavet ॥16॥
O Menā, whatever is desired by you by penance, sacred rites and ecstatic contemplation I shall grant you and that too whenever you wish for it.

ततस्सा मेनका देवीं प्रत्यक्षां कालिकान्तदा ॥ दृष्ट्वा च प्रणनामाथ वचनं चेदमब्रवीत् ॥१७॥
tatassA menakA devIM pratyakSAM kAlikAntadA ॥ dRSTvA ca praNanAmAtha vacanaM cedamabravIt ॥17॥
Then seeing the goddess in her presence Menā bowed and spoke these words:

मेनोवाच ॥ देवि प्रत्यक्षतो रूपन्दृष्टन्तव मयाऽधुना ॥ त्वामहं स्तोतुमिच्छामि प्रसन्ना भव कालिके ॥ १८ ॥
menovAca ॥ devi pratyakSato rUpandRSTantava mayA'dhunA ॥ tvAmahaM stotumicchAmi prasannA bhava kAlike ॥ 18 ॥
Menā said: O Goddess, your form has been perceived by me directly, just now. I wish to eulogise you. Be pleased.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ अथ सा मेनयेत्युक्ता कालिका सर्वमोहिनी ॥ बाहुभ्यां सुप्रसन्नात्मा मेनकां परिषस्वजे ॥ १९ ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ atha sA menayetyuktA kAlikA sarvamohinI ॥ bAhubhyAM suprasannAtmA menakAM pariSasvaje ॥ 19 ॥
Brahmā said: On being thus requested by Menā, the goddess Umā, the enchantress of everyone, embraced Menā and was highly delighted.

ततः प्राप्तमहाज्ञाना मेनका कालिकां शिवम् ॥ तुष्टाव वाग्भि रिष्टाभिर्भक्त्या प्रत्यक्षतां गताम् ॥ 2-3-5-२० ॥
tataH prAptamahAjJAnA menakA kAlikAM zivam ॥ tuSTAva vAgbhi riSTAbhirbhaktyA pratyakSatAM gatAm ॥ 2-3-5-20 ॥
Acquiring very great wisdom, Menā eulogised Śivā, who had appeared in person, by means of pleasing words with great devotion.

मेनोवाच ॥ महामायां जगद्धात्रीं चण्डिकां लोकधारिणीम् ॥ प्रणमामि महादेवीं सर्वकामार्थदायिनीम् ॥ २१ ॥
menovAca ॥ mahAmAyAM jagaddhAtrIM caNDikAM lokadhAriNIm ॥ praNamAmi mahAdevIM sarvakAmArthadAyinIm ॥ 21 ॥
Menā said: I bow to the great goddess, the bestower of all desires, I bow to her who wields great illusion, the creator and sustainer of the universe.

नित्यानन्दकरीं मायां योगनिद्रां जगत्प्रसूम् ॥ प्रणमामि सदासिद्धां शुभसारसमालिनीम् ॥२२॥
nityAnandakarIM mAyAM yoganidrAM jagatprasUm ॥ praNamAmi sadAsiddhAM zubhasArasamAlinIm ॥22॥
I bow to her of contemplative sleep, and to her the wielder of great illusion and the cause of permanent bliss. I bow to the mother of the universe. I bow to Siddhā having the garland of auspicious lotuses.

मातामहीं सदानन्दां भक्तशोकविनाशिनीम् ॥ आकल्पं वनितानां च प्राणिनां बुद्धिरूपिणीम् ॥ २३ ॥
mAtAmahIM sadAnandAM bhaktazokavinAzinIm ॥ AkalpaM vanitAnAM ca prANinAM buddhirUpiNIm ॥ 23 ॥
I bow to the grandmother, of perpetual bliss. I bow to the goddess who dispels the sorrow of the devotees, who is a model for all women and who constitutes the intellect of all living beings.

सा त्वं बंधच्छेदहेतुर्यतीनां कस्ते गेयो मादृशीभिः प्रभावः ॥ हिंसाया वाथर्ववेदस्य सा त्वं नित्यं कामं त्वं ममेष्टं विधेहि ॥ २४ ॥
sA tvaM baMdhacchedaheturyatInAM kaste geyo mAdRzIbhiH prabhAvaH ॥ hiMsAyA vAtharvavedasya sA tvaM nityaM kAmaM tvaM mameSTaM vidhehi ॥ 24 ॥
You are the cause of the snapping of all fetters of ascetics. Which one of your powers can be sung by women like me? You are violence mentioned in the Atharvaveda. You (of such powerful means) fulfil my desire.

नित्यानित्यैर्भावहीनैः परास्तैस्तत्तन्मात्रैर्योज्यते भूतवर्गः ॥ तेषां शक्तिस्त्वं सदा नित्यरूपा काले योषा योगयुक्ता समर्था॥२५॥
nityAnityairbhAvahInaiH parAstaistattanmAtrairyojyate bhUtavargaH ॥ teSAM zaktistvaM sadA nityarUpA kAle yoSA yogayuktA samarthA॥25॥
The living beings are being united to the different principles of the nature of permanence and otherwise and those without substance are discarded. You are the inherent power of those permanent principles. In the proper time you become a woman of ability with Yogic powers.

योनिर्धरित्री जगतां त्वमेव त्वमेव नित्या प्रकृतिः परस्तात् ॥ यथा वशं क्रियते ब्रह्मरूपं सा त्वं नित्या मे प्रसीदाद्य मातः॥२६॥
yonirdharitrI jagatAM tvameva tvameva nityA prakRtiH parastAt ॥ yathA vazaM kriyate brahmarUpaM sA tvaM nityA me prasIdAdya mAtaH॥26॥
You are the origin and the sustainer of the worlds. You are the eternal Prakṛti, the great, by whom even the Brahman is brought under control. O you, of noble nature, O mother, be pleased with me.

त्वं जातवेदोगतशक्तिरुग्रा त्वं दाहिका सूर्यकरस्य शक्तिः ॥ आह्लादिका त्वं बहुचन्द्रिका या तान्त्वामहं स्तौमि नमामि चण्डीम् ॥ २७ ॥
tvaM jAtavedogatazaktirugrA tvaM dAhikA sUryakarasya zaktiH ॥ AhlAdikA tvaM bahucandrikA yA tAntvAmahaM staumi namAmi caNDIm ॥ 27 ॥
You are the great power latent in fire; you are the burning power of the sun’s rays; you are the pleasing power of the extensive moonlight. O Goddess, I bow to you.

योषाणां सत्प्रिया च त्वं नित्या त्वं चोर्ध्वरेतसाम् ॥ वांछा त्वं सर्वजगतां धाया च त्वं यथा हरेः ॥२८॥
yoSANAM satpriyA ca tvaM nityA tvaM cordhvaretasAm ॥ vAMchA tvaM sarvajagatAM dhAyA ca tvaM yathA hareH ॥28॥
To good women you manifest yourself as their beloved; to persons of perfect self-control and sublimation you manifest yourself as eternal; to the entire universe you manifest as desire; as of Viṣṇu you are the Māyā so you are of Śiva.

या चेष्टरूपाणि विधाय देवी सृष्टिस्थितानाशमयी च कर्त्री ॥ ब्रह्माच्युतस्थाणुशरीरहेतुस्सा त्वं प्रसीदाद्य पुनर्नमस्ते ॥ २९ ॥
yA ceSTarUpANi vidhAya devI sRSTisthitAnAzamayI ca kartrI ॥ brahmAcyutasthANuzarIrahetussA tvaM prasIdAdya punarnamaste ॥ 29 ॥
You assume different forms as you please for the purpose of creation, sustenance and annihilation and give birth to the bodies of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva. You, of such potentiality, be pleased. Obeisance to you again.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ तत इत्थं स्तुता दुर्गा कालिका पुनरेव हि ॥ उवाच मेनकां देवीं वांछितं वरयेत्युत ॥2-3-5-३०॥
brahmovAca ॥ tata itthaM stutA durgA kAlikA punareva hi ॥ uvAca menakAM devIM vAMchitaM varayetyuta ॥2-3-5-30॥
Brahmā said: Thus eulogised, the goddess spoke to Menā desiring her to choose a boon.

॥ उमोवाच ॥ प्राणप्रिया मम त्वं हि हिमाचलविलासिनी ॥ यदिच्छसि ध्रुवन्दास्ये नादेयं विद्यते मम ॥ ३१ ॥
॥ umovAca ॥ prANapriyA mama tvaM hi himAcalavilAsinI ॥ yadicchasi dhruvandAsye nAdeyaM vidyate mama ॥ 31 ॥
Umā said: O Himācala’s beloved, you are as favourite to me as my vital air. Whatever you desire I shall give you. There is nothing that I can withhold from you.

इति श्रुत्वा महेशान्याः पीयूषसदृशं वचः ॥ उवाच परितुष्टा सा मेनका गिरिकामिनी ॥ ३२ ॥
iti zrutvA mahezAnyAH pIyUSasadRzaM vacaH ॥ uvAca parituSTA sA menakA girikAminI ॥ 32 ॥
On hearing these nectar-like words of the Goddess, the delighted Menā, the wife of Himācala, said.

मेनोवाच ॥ शिवे जयजय प्राज्ञे महेश्वरि भवाम्बिके ॥ वरयोग्यास्महं चेत्ते वृणे भूयो वरं वरम् ॥ ३३ ॥
menovAca ॥ zive jayajaya prAjJe mahezvari bhavAmbike ॥ varayogyAsmahaM cette vRNe bhUyo varaM varam ॥ 33 ॥
Menā said: O Śivā, Hail, Hail! O great goddess, If you consider me worthy of a boon, I shall choose one.

प्रथमं शतपुत्रा मे भवन्तु जगदम्बिके ॥ बह्वायुषो वीर्यवन्त ऋद्धिसिद्धिसमन्विताः ॥ ३४ ॥
prathamaM zataputrA me bhavantu jagadambike ॥ bahvAyuSo vIryavanta RddhisiddhisamanvitAH ॥ 34 ॥
O mother of the universe, at first let me have a hundred sons endowed with longevity, heroism, prosperity and accomplishments.

पश्चात्तथैका तनया स्वरूपगुणशालिनी ॥ कुलद्वयानंदकरी भुवनत्रयपूजिता ॥३५॥
pazcAttathaikA tanayA svarUpaguNazAlinI ॥ kuladvayAnaMdakarI bhuvanatrayapUjitA ॥35॥
After that let me have a daughter of comely features and good qualities who will delight both the families and who will be revered by the three worlds.

सुता भव मम शिवे देवकार्यार्थमेव हि ॥ रुद्रपत्नी भव तथा लीलां कुरु भवाम्बिके ॥ ३६ ॥
sutA bhava mama zive devakAryArthameva hi ॥ rudrapatnI bhava tathA lIlAM kuru bhavAmbike ॥ 36 ॥
O Śivā, be my daughter for fulfilling the needs of the gods. O Goddess, be Rudra’s wife and indulge in divine sports with the lord.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ tacchrutvA menakoktaM hi prAha devI prasannadhIH ॥ smitapUrvaM vacastasyAH pUrayantI manoratham ॥37॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of Menā, the delighted goddess spoke smilingly, fulfilling her desire.

॥ देव्युवाच ॥ शतपुत्रास्सं भवन्तु भवत्या वीर्यसंयुताः ॥ तत्रैको बलवान्मुख्यः प्रधमं संभविष्यति ॥ ॥३८॥
॥ devyuvAca ॥ zataputrAssaM bhavantu bhavatyA vIryasaMyutAH ॥ tatraiko balavAnmukhyaH pradhamaM saMbhaviSyati ॥ ॥38॥
The Goddess said: May hundred heroic sons be born to you. One of them very strong will be born at first.

sutAhaM saMbhaviSyAmi santuSTA tava bhaktitaH ॥ deva kAryaM kariSyAmi sevitA nikhilaissuraiH ॥39॥

She told her husband about the boon, which had already been understood by him through good omens, by her words which were rendered useless.

O sage, when their mutual sexual intercourse took place, Menā conceived and the child in the womb gradually grew up.

She gave birth to a beautiful son Maināka who later on became the worthy recepient of the love of Nāga ladies and who later on entered into an alliance with the lord of ocean.

O celestial sage, when Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, became angry and began to chop off the wings of mountains, he retained his wings, nay, he did not even feel the pain of being wounded by the thunderbolt.

He had good limbs. He had neat strength and prowess. He was the most important of all the mountains born of him. He too became the lord of mountains.

In the city of Himācala there was a wonderful celebration of the event. The couple were highly delighted. Their pain was at an end.

dAnandadau dvijAtibhyo'nyebhyazca pradadau dhanam ॥ zivAzivapadadvandve sneho'bhUdadhikastayoH ॥2-3-5-50॥
He gave monetary gifts and charitable offerings to brahmins. Their devotion to Śivā and Śiva became increased.
