nArada uvAca ॥ dAkSAyaNI satI devI tyaktadehA piturmakhe ॥ kathaM girisutA brahmanbabhUva jagadambikA ॥ 1 ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, how did the goddess Satī, the daughter of Dakṣa who forsook her body in her father’s sacrifice, become the daughter of Himācala, and the mother of the universe?

कथं कृत्वा तपोऽत्युग्रम्पतिमाप शिवं च सा ॥ एतन्मे पृच्छते सम्यक्कथय त्वं विशेषतः ॥ २ ॥
kathaM kRtvA tapo'tyugrampatimApa zivaM ca sA ॥ etanme pRcchate samyakkathaya tvaM vizeSataH ॥ 2 ॥
How could she secure Śiva as her husband after performing a severe penance? Please explain this clearly to me who ask you about it.

brahmovAca ॥ zRNu tvaM munizArdUla zivAcaritamuttamam ॥ pAvanaM paramaM divyaM sarvapApaharaM zubham ॥ 3 ॥
Brahmā said: O foremost of sages, listen to the story of Śivā which is excellent, sanctifying, highly divine, auspicious and destructive of all sins.

यदा दाक्षायणी देवी हरेण सहिता मुदा ॥ हिमाचले सुचिक्रीडे लीलया परमेश्वरी ॥४॥
yadA dAkSAyaNI devI hareNa sahitA mudA ॥ himAcale sucikrIDe lIlayA paramezvarI ॥4॥
When the goddess Dākṣāyaṇī (Sati), joyfully united with Lord Hara (Shiva), delightfully sported upon Mount Himālaya, the Supreme Goddess engaged in divine play.

matsuteyamiti jJAtvA siSeve mAtRvarcasA ॥ himAcalapriyA menA sarvarddhibhiranirbharA ॥5॥
Knowing that she (Pārvatī) was my own daughter, Menā, beloved of Himācala, attended to her with maternal affection and care, and nurtured her with all means of prosperity and growth.

यदा दाक्षायणी रुष्टा नादृता स्वतनुं जहौ ॥ पित्रा दक्षेण तद्यज्ञे संगता परमेश्वरी ॥ ६ ॥
yadA dAkSAyaNI ruSTA nAdRtA svatanuM jahau ॥ pitrA dakSeNa tadyajJe saMgatA paramezvarI ॥ 6 ॥
When Dākṣāyaṇī, out of anger, was disrespected and renounced her body— at that very yajña (sacrifice) of her father Dakṣa, she who is the Supreme Goddess (Parameśvarī) perished (by self-immolation).

तदैव मेनका तां सा हिमाचलप्रिया मुने ॥ शिवलोकस्थितां देवीमारिराधयिषुस्तदा ॥७॥
tadaiva menakA tAM sA himAcalapriyA mune ॥ zivalokasthitAM devImArirAdhayiSustadA ॥7॥
At that very time, O sage (muni), Menakā, beloved of Himācala (the Himalaya), desired to worship and propitiate that Goddess, who now resided in Śiva-loka (the abode of Lord Shiva).

तस्यामहं सुता स्यामित्यवधार्य सती हृदा ॥ त्यक्तदेहा मनो दध्रे भवितुं हिमवत्सुता ॥ ८ ॥
tasyAmahaM sutA syAmityavadhArya satI hRdA ॥ tyaktadehA mano dadhre bhavituM himavatsutA ॥ 8 ॥
Satī thought to herself:—“I shall be her daughter” and cast off her body in order to become the daughter of Himācala.

समयं प्राप्य सा देवी सर्वदेवस्तुता पुनः ॥ सती त्यक्ततनुः प्रीत्या मेनकातनयाभवत् ॥९॥
samayaM prApya sA devI sarvadevastutA punaH ॥ satI tyaktatanuH prItyA menakAtanayAbhavat ॥9॥
At the proper time Satī who had cast off her body and who was worshipped and eulogised by the gods became the daughter of Menā out of sheer joy.

नाम्ना सा पार्वती देवी तपः कृत्वा सुदुस्सहम्॥ नारदस्योपदेशाद्वै पतिम्प्राप शिवं पुनः ॥2-3-1-१०॥
nAmnA sA pArvatI devI tapaH kRtvA sudussaham॥ nAradasyopadezAdvai patimprApa zivaM punaH ॥2-3-1-10॥
On being advised by Nārada, the goddess who was named Pārvatī, performed a severe penance and thereby secured Śiva as her husband.

नारद उवाच॥ ब्रह्मन्विधे महाप्राज्ञ वद मे वदतां वर ॥ मेनकायास्समुत्पतिं विवाहं चरितं तथा॥११॥
nArada uvAca॥ brahmanvidhe mahAprAjJa vada me vadatAM vara ॥ menakAyAssamutpatiM vivAhaM caritaM tathA॥11॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, of great intellect and foremost of eloquent gods, please tell me the origin and details of the marriage of Menā.

धन्या हि मेनका देवी यस्यां जाता सुता सती ॥ अतो मान्या च धन्या च सर्वेषां सा पतिव्रता ॥१२॥
dhanyA hi menakA devI yasyAM jAtA sutA satI ॥ ato mAnyA ca dhanyA ca sarveSAM sA pativratA ॥12॥
Blessed indeed is the gentle lady Menakā of whom Satī was born as a daughter. Hence that chaste lady is worthy of the honour and blessings of everyone.

ब्रह्मोवाच॥ शृणु त्वं नारद मुने पार्वतीमातुरुद्भवम्॥ विवाहं चरितं चैव पावनं भक्तिवर्द्धनम् ॥ १३ ॥
brahmovAca॥ zRNu tvaM nArada mune pArvatImAturudbhavam॥ vivAhaM caritaM caiva pAvanaM bhaktivarddhanam ॥ 13 ॥
Brahmā said: O sage Nārada, you listen to the story of the origin of Pārvatī’s mother and her marriage and other details both sanctifying and conducive to the growth of devotion.

अस्त्युत्तरस्यां दिशि वै गिरीशो हिमवान्महान् ॥ पर्वतो हि मुनिश्रेष्ठ महातेजास्समृद्धिभाक् ॥ १४ ॥
astyuttarasyAM dizi vai girIzo himavAnmahAn ॥ parvato hi munizreSTha mahAtejAssamRddhibhAk ॥ 14 ॥
O excellent sage, there in the northern region is a mountain called Himavat who is the lord of mountains and has great splendour and prosperity.

द्वैरूप्यं तस्य विख्यातं जंगमस्थिरभेदतः ॥ वर्णयामि समासेन तस्य सूक्ष्मस्वरूपकम् ॥ १५ ॥
dvairUpyaM tasya vikhyAtaM jaMgamasthirabhedataH ॥ varNayAmi samAsena tasya sUkSmasvarUpakam ॥ 15 ॥
His twofold aspects—that of a mobile nature and that of the immobile one—are well known. I succinctly describe his subtle form.

पूर्वापरौ तोयनिधी सुविगाह्य स्थितो हि यः ॥ नानारत्नाकरो रम्यो मानदण्ड इव क्षितेः ॥१६॥
pUrvAparau toyanidhI suvigAhya sthito hi yaH ॥ nAnAratnAkaro ramyo mAnadaNDa iva kSiteH ॥16॥
He is beautiful and is the storehouse of multifarious gems. Extending from the eastern to the western ocean he appears like a measuring rod of the Earth.

नानावृक्षसमाकीर्णो नानाशृंगसुचित्रितः॥ सिंहव्याघ्रादिपशुभिस्सेवितस्सुखिभिस्सदा ॥ १७ ॥
nAnAvRkSasamAkIrNo nAnAzRMgasucitritaH॥ siMhavyAghrAdipazubhissevitassukhibhissadA ॥ 17 ॥
He abounds in various trees. Being of variegated shape and features he is adorned by many peaks on him. Lions, tigers and other animals frequent it. Many happy persons live there for ever.

तुषारनिधिरत्युग्रो नानाश्चर्यविचित्रितः ॥ देवर्षिसिद्धमुनिभिस्संश्रितः शिवसंप्रियः ॥ १८ ॥
tuSAranidhiratyugro nAnAzcaryavicitritaH ॥ devarSisiddhamunibhissaMzritaH zivasaMpriyaH ॥ 18 ॥
He is the storehouse of snow (and yet) very fierce. He is the resort of wonderful things. He is resorted to by the gods, sages and seers. He is a great favourite of Śiva.

तपस्थानोऽतिपूतात्मा पावनश्च महात्मनाम् ॥ तपस्सिद्धिप्रदोत्यंतं नानाधात्वाकरः शुभः ॥ १९ ॥
tapasthAno'tipUtAtmA pAvanazca mahAtmanAm ॥ tapassiddhipradotyaMtaM nAnAdhAtvAkaraH zubhaH ॥ 19 ॥
He is of pure soul, an abode of austerities. He sanctifies even the great souls. He is the bestower of the benefit of austerities. He is the auspicious storehouse of multifarious minerals.

स एव दिव्यरूपो हि रम्यः सर्वाङ्गसुन्दरः ॥ विष्ण्वंशोऽविकृतः शैलराजराजस्सताम्प्रियः॥2-3-1-२०॥
sa eva divyarUpo hi ramyaH sarvAGgasundaraH ॥ viSNvaMzo'vikRtaH zailarAjarAjassatAmpriyaH॥2-3-1-20॥
He is of a divine form. He is beautiful in every part. He is the unaffected part of Viṣṇu. He is the king of leading mountains and a great favourite of the good.

कुलस्थित्यै च स गिरिर्धर्म्मवर्द्धनहेतवे ॥ स्वविवाहं कर्त्तुमैच्छत्पितृदेवहितेच्छया ॥२१ ॥
kulasthityai ca sa girirdharmmavarddhanahetave ॥ svavivAhaM karttumaicchatpitRdevahitecchayA ॥21 ॥
Due to the desire for the benefit of the manes and the gods and for the stabilisation of his race as well as for the increase of virtue, Himācala wanted to marry.

तस्मिन्नवसरे देवाः स्वार्थमाचिन्त्य कृत्स्नशः ॥ ऊचुः पितॄन्समागत्य दिव्यान्प्रीत्या मुनीश्वर ॥२२॥
tasminnavasare devAH svArthamAcintya kRtsnazaH ॥ UcuH pitRRnsamAgatya divyAnprItyA munIzvara ॥22॥
At that time, considering their own interest entirely, O excellent sage, the gods approached the celestial forefathers and said lovingly to them.

देवा ऊचुः॥ सर्वे शृणुत नो वाक्यं पितरः प्रीतमानसाः ॥ कर्त्तव्यं तत्तथैवाशु देवकार्य्येप्सवो यदि ॥२३॥
devA UcuH॥ sarve zRNuta no vAkyaM pitaraH prItamAnasAH ॥ karttavyaM tattathaivAzu devakAryyepsavo yadi ॥23॥
The gods said: O ye forefathers, listen to our words with pleasure. If you desire that the affairs of the gods be fulfilled you must act accordingly soon.

मेना नाम सुता या वो ज्येष्ठा मङ्गलरूपिणी ॥ ताम्विवाह्य च सुप्रीत्या हिमाख्येन महीभृता ॥ २४ ॥
menA nAma sutA yA vo jyeSThA maGgalarUpiNI ॥ tAmvivAhya ca suprItyA himAkhyena mahIbhRtA ॥ 24 ॥
niting your eldest daughter Menā of auspicious features with Himācala, a great benefit will accrue to everyone.

एवं सर्वमहालाभः सर्वेषां च भविष्यति ॥ युष्माकममराणां च दुःखहानिः पदे पदे ॥ २५ ॥
evaM sarvamahAlAbhaH sarveSAM ca bhaviSyati ॥ yuSmAkamamarANAM ca duHkhahAniH pade pade ॥ 25 ॥
At every step, the miseries of the gods and those of yours as well can be reduced.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्यापरवचः पितरस्ते विमृश्य च ॥ स्मृत्वा शापं सुतानां च प्रोचुरोमिति तद्वचः ॥ २६ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNyAparavacaH pitaraste vimRzya ca ॥ smRtvA zApaM sutAnAM ca procuromiti tadvacaH ॥ 26 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words of the gods, pondering over them and remembering the curse incurred by their daughters, the forefathers said “Amen” to their proposals.

ददुर्मेनां सुविधिना हिमागाय निजात्मजाम् ॥ समुत्सवो महानासीत्तद्विवाहे सुमङ्गले ॥ २७ ॥
dadurmenAM suvidhinA himAgAya nijAtmajAm ॥ samutsavo mahAnAsIttadvivAhe sumaGgale ॥ 27 ॥
They gave their daughter Menā to Himavat. In that auspicious marriage there were great festivities.

हर्य्यादयाऽपि ते देवा मुनयश्चापरोखिलाः ॥ आजग्मुस्तत्र संस्मृत्य वामदेवं भवं धिया ॥ २८ ॥
haryyAdayA'pi te devA munayazcAparokhilAH ॥ Ajagmustatra saMsmRtya vAmadevaM bhavaM dhiyA ॥ 28 ॥
Viṣṇu, the other gods and the sages reached there with their hearts set on Śiva.

उत्सवं कारयामासुर्दत्त्वा दानान्यनेकशः ॥ सुप्रशस्य पितॄन्दिव्यान्प्रशशंसुर्हिमाचलम् ॥२९॥
utsavaM kArayAmAsurdattvA dAnAnyanekazaH ॥ suprazasya pitRRndivyAnprazazaMsurhimAcalam ॥29॥
Giving many charitable gifts they made the celebration a great success. They praised the celestial forefathers and the Himavat.

महामोदान्विता देवास्ते सर्वे समुनीश्वराः॥ संजग्मुः स्वस्वधामानि संस्मरन्तः शिवाशिवौ ॥2-3-1-३०॥
mahAmodAnvitA devAste sarve samunIzvarAH॥ saMjagmuH svasvadhAmAni saMsmarantaH zivAzivau ॥2-3-1-30॥
All the gods and the sages rejoiced and returned to their own abodes with their hearts set on Śiva.

कौतुकं बहु सम्प्राप्य सुविवाह्य प्रियां च ताम् ॥ आजगाम स्वभवनं मुदमाप गिरीश्वरः ॥३१॥
kautukaM bahu samprApya suvivAhya priyAM ca tAm ॥ AjagAma svabhavanaM mudamApa girIzvaraH ॥31॥
After receiving many articles as gifts and marrying the beloved lady Menā, the lord of mountains returned to his abode and rejoiced.

brahmovAca ॥ menayA hi himAgasya suvivAho munIzvara॥ prokto me sukhadaH prItyA kimbhUyaH zrotumicchasi ॥32॥
Brahmā said: O excellent sage, the pleasing details of the splendid marriage of Himavat with Menā have been recounted to you thus. What more do you wish to hear?
