Brahmā said: Thus eulogised by Viṣṇu, by me, by the gods, sages and others, the great lord became delighted.

After consoling Braḥmā, Viṣṇu, the sages and the gods by His benign glance, Śiva spoke to Dakṣa.

mahAdeva uvAca ॥ zRNu dakSa pravakSyAmi prasannosmi prajApate ॥ bhaktAdhInaH sadAhaM vai svataMtropyakhilezvaraH ॥3॥
Lord Śiva said: O Dakṣa, listen. I shall explain. O patriarch, I am delighted. Although I am independent lord of all, I am subservient to my devotees always.

चतुर्विधा भजंते मां जनाः सुकृतिनस्सदा॥ उत्तरोत्तरतः श्रेष्ठास्तेषां दक्षप्रजापते ॥४॥
caturvidhA bhajaMte mAM janAH sukRtinassadA॥ uttarottarataH zreSThAsteSAM dakSaprajApate ॥4॥
Four kinds of meritorious persons worship me always. O patriarch Dakṣa, the latter are greater than the former.

Arto jijJAsurarthArthI jJAnI caiva caturthakaH ॥ pUrve trayazca sAmAnyAzcaturtho hi viziSyate ॥ 5 ॥
They are—the distressed, the inquisitive, the fortune-seeker and the wise. The first three are ordinary and the fourth one is extraordinary person.

tatra jJAnI priyatara mamarUpaJca sa smRtaH ॥ tasmAtpriyataro nAnyaH satyaM satyaM vadAmyaham॥6॥
The wise among these four is a great favourite of mine. He is of my own form. None is dearer to me than the wise. It is the truth. I tell you the truth.

I am the knower of Self. I can be known through knowledge by those who have mastered Vedanta and the Vedas.

न वेदैश्च न यज्ञैश्च न दानैस्तपसा क्वचित् ॥ न शक्नुवंति मां प्राप्तुं मूढाः कर्मवशा नरा ॥८॥
na vedaizca na yajJaizca na dAnaistapasA kvacit ॥ na zaknuvaMti mAM prAptuM mUDhAH karmavazA narA ॥8॥
Deluded men engrossed in rituals alone cannot attain me through the Vedas, sacrifices, gifts or austerities.

केवलं कर्म्मणा त्वं स्म संसारं तर्तुमिच्छसि ॥ अत एवाभवं रुष्टो यज्ञविध्वंसकारकः ॥९॥
kevalaM karmmaNA tvaM sma saMsAraM tartumicchasi ॥ ata evAbhavaM ruSTo yajJavidhvaMsakArakaH ॥9॥
You wished to cross the ocean of worldly existence by observance of rituals alone. That was why I became angry and caused the destruction of the sacrifice.

इतः प्रभृति भो दक्ष मत्वा मां परमेश्वरम् ॥ बुद्ध्या ज्ञानपरो भूत्वा कुरु कर्म समाहितः ॥2-2-43-१०॥
itaH prabhRti bho dakSa matvA mAM paramezvaram ॥ buddhyA jJAnaparo bhUtvA kuru karma samAhitaH ॥2-2-43-10॥
Hereafter, O Dakṣa, thinking upon me as the great Lord and giving more importance to knowledge you carry on rituals with care and attention.

anyacca zRNu sadbuddhyA vacanaM me prajApate ॥ vacmi guhyaM dharmahetoH saguNatvepyahaM tava ॥11॥
O patriarch, listen to another statement of mine with a clear conscience. Although it is based on the qualitative aspect it is esoteric. For the sake of virtue I shall tell you.

अहं ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च जगतः कारणं परम् ॥ आत्मेश्वर उपद्रष्टा स्वयंदृगविशेषणः ॥१२॥
ahaM brahmA ca viSNuzca jagataH kAraNaM param ॥ Atmezvara upadraSTA svayaMdRgavizeSaNaH ॥12॥
Brahmā, Viṣṇu and I constitute the chief cause of the universe. But I am the soul, the witness, self-seer and without attributes.

आत्ममायां समाविश्य सोहं गुणमयीं मुने ॥ सृजन्रक्षन्हरन्विश्वं दधे संज्ञाः क्रियोचिताः ॥१३॥
AtmamAyAM samAvizya sohaM guNamayIM mune ॥ sRjanrakSanharanvizvaM dadhe saMjJAH kriyocitAH ॥13॥
O sage, entering into my own illusion consisting of three attributes, I create, sustain and annihilate the universe and acquire designations consistent with the activities.

अद्वितीये परे तस्मिन् ब्रह्मण्यात्मनि केवले ॥ अज्ञः पश्यति भेदेन भूतानि ब्रह्मचेश्वरम् ॥१४॥
advitIye pare tasmin brahmaNyAtmani kevale ॥ ajJaH pazyati bhedena bhUtAni brahmacezvaram ॥14॥
In that supreme, sole, universal God which is the pure Self, the ignorant sees different living beings, Brahman, Īśvara etc.

शिरः करादिस्वांगेषु कुरुते न यथा पुमान् ॥ पारक्यशेमुषीं क्वापि भूतेष्वेवं हि मत्परः ॥१५॥
ziraH karAdisvAMgeSu kurute na yathA pumAn ॥ pArakyazemuSIM kvApi bhUteSvevaM hi matparaH ॥15॥
Even as an ordinary man does not consider his head, hands and other limbs as separate from his own self so also my follower does not feel separateness about the living beings.

सर्वभूतात्मनामेकभावनां यो न पश्यति ॥ त्रिसुराणां भिदां दक्ष स शांतिमधिगच्छति ॥१६॥
sarvabhUtAtmanAmekabhAvanAM yo na pazyati ॥ trisurANAM bhidAM dakSa sa zAMtimadhigacchati ॥16॥
He attains peace, who does not see any difference among the three deities who constitute the soul of all living beings and who have the same innate property, O Dakṣa.

यः करोति त्रिदेवेषु भेदबुद्धिं नराधमः ॥ नरके स वसेन्नूनं यावदाचन्द्रतारकम् ॥१७॥
yaH karoti trideveSu bhedabuddhiM narAdhamaH ॥ narake sa vasennUnaM yAvadAcandratArakam ॥17॥
The base man who differentiates the deities of the Trinity certainly stays in hell as long as the moon and the stars shine.

मत्परः पूजयेद्देवान् सर्वानपि विचक्षणः ॥ स ज्ञानं लभते येन मुक्तिर्भवति शाश्वती ॥१८॥
matparaH pUjayeddevAn sarvAnapi vicakSaNaH ॥ sa jJAnaM labhate yena muktirbhavati zAzvatI ॥18॥
My devotee may worship the gods. Being so absorbed he will attain knowledge leading to eternal salvation.

विधिभक्तिं विना नैव भक्तिर्भवति वैष्णवी ॥ विष्णुभक्तिं विना मे न भक्तिः क्वापि प्रजायते ॥१९॥
vidhibhaktiM vinA naiva bhaktirbhavati vaiSNavI ॥ viSNubhaktiM vinA me na bhaktiH kvApi prajAyate ॥19॥
Without devotion to Brahmā one cannot have the devotion to Viṣṇu; without devotion to Viṣṇu none will have devotion towards me.

इत्युक्त्वा शंकरस्स्वामी सर्वेषां परमेश्वरः ॥ सर्वेषां शृण्वतां तत्रोवाच वाणीं कृपाकरः ॥2-2-43-२०॥
ityuktvA zaMkarassvAmI sarveSAM paramezvaraH ॥ sarveSAM zRNvatAM tatrovAca vANIM kRpAkaraH ॥2-2-43-20॥
After saying this, Śiva, the great lord, the merciful god spoke these words within the hearing of everyone.

हरिभक्तो हि मां निन्देत्तथा शैवोभवे द्यदि ॥ तयोः शापा भवेयुस्ते तत्त्वप्राप्तिर्भवेन्न हि ॥ २१ ॥
haribhakto hi mAM nindettathA zaivobhave dyadi ॥ tayoH zApA bhaveyuste tattvaprAptirbhavenna hi ॥ 21 ॥
“If a devotee of Viṣṇu hates me or if a devotee of Śiva hates Viṣṇu, both will incur curses and never realise reality”.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य महेशस्य वचनं सुखकारकम् ॥ जहृषुस्सकलास्तत्र सुरमुन्यादयो मुने ॥२२॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya mahezasya vacanaM sukhakArakam ॥ jahRSussakalAstatra suramunyAdayo mune ॥22॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these pleasing words of lord Śiva, O sage, the devas, sages and others were greatly delighted.

दक्षोभवन्महाप्रीत्या शिवभक्तिरतस्तदा ॥ सकुटुम्बस्सुराद्यास्ते शिवं मत्वाखिलेश्वरम् ॥२३॥
dakSobhavanmahAprItyA zivabhaktiratastadA ॥ sakuTumbassurAdyAste zivaM matvAkhilezvaram ॥23॥
With great joy, Dakṣa, his family and the gods realised Śiva as the lord of all and was engrossed in devotion to Śiva.

यथा येन कृता शंभोः संस्तुतिः परमात्मनः ॥ तथा तस्मै वरो दत्तश्शंभुना तुष्टचेतसा ॥ २४ ॥
yathA yena kRtA zaMbhoH saMstutiH paramAtmanaH ॥ tathA tasmai varo dattazzaMbhunA tuSTacetasA ॥ 24 ॥
Lord Śiva who was delighted in mind granted boons to all, as he received reverence to His great self.

ज्ञप्तः शिवेनाशु दक्षः शिवभक्तः प्रसन्नधीः ॥ यज्ञं चकार संपूर्णं शिवानुग्रहतो मुने ॥२५॥
jJaptaH zivenAzu dakSaH zivabhaktaH prasannadhIH ॥ yajJaM cakAra saMpUrNaM zivAnugrahato mune ॥25॥
Permitted by Śiva and with his blessings, O sage, Dakṣa the devotee of Śiva, with a delighted heart completed his sacrifice.

ददौ भागान्सुरेभ्यो हि पूर्णभागं शिवाय सः ॥ दानं ददौ द्विजेभ्यश्च प्राप्तः शंभोरनुग्रहः ॥२६॥
dadau bhAgAnsurebhyo hi pUrNabhAgaM zivAya saH ॥ dAnaM dadau dvijebhyazca prAptaH zaMbhoranugrahaH ॥26॥
He allotted the full share to Śiva and gave the gods their respective shares. He gave charitable gifts to the brahmins and secured the good blessings of Siva.

अथो देवस्य सुमहत्तत्कर्म विधिपूर्वकम् ॥ दक्षः समाप्य विधिवत्सहर्त्विग्भिः प्रजापतिः ॥२७॥
atho devasya sumahattatkarma vidhipUrvakam ॥ dakSaH samApya vidhivatsahartvigbhiH prajApatiH ॥27॥
Thus the patriarch, Dakṣa, in collaboration with the Ṛtviks, completed that great rite of the gods in accordance with the sacred injunction.

एवं दक्षमखः पूर्णोभवत्तत्र मुनीश्वरः ॥ शंकरस्य प्रसादेन परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणः ॥२८॥
evaM dakSamakhaH pUrNobhavattatra munIzvaraH ॥ zaMkarasya prasAdena parabrahmasvarUpiNaH ॥28॥
O excellent sage, thus the sacrifice of Dakṣa was completed, thanks to the grace of Śiva who is identical with the supreme Brahman.

अथ देवर्षयस्सर्वे शंसंतश्शांकरं यशः ॥ स्वधामानि ययुस्तु ष्टाः परेपि सुखतस्तदा ॥२९॥
atha devarSayassarve zaMsaMtazzAMkaraM yazaH ॥ svadhAmAni yayustu STAH parepi sukhatastadA ॥29॥
Then the celestial sages, sang the glory of Śiva and left for their abodes with delighted minds. Others too were pleased and left for their homes.

अहं विष्णुश्च सुप्रीतावपि स्वंस्वं परं मुदा ॥ गायन्तौ सुयशश्शंभोः सर्वमंगलदं सदा ॥2-2-43-३०॥
ahaM viSNuzca suprItAvapi svaMsvaM paraM mudA ॥ gAyantau suyazazzaMbhoH sarvamaMgaladaM sadA ॥2-2-43-30॥
Viṣṇu and I, went to our regions, joyfully singing the ever auspicious glory of Śiva.

दक्ष संमानितः प्रीत्या महादेवोपि सद्गतिः ॥ कैलासं स ययौ शैलं सुप्रीतस्सगणो निजम्॥३१॥
dakSa saMmAnitaH prItyA mahAdevopi sadgatiH ॥ kailAsaM sa yayau zailaM suprItassagaNo nijam॥31॥
Lovingly honoured by Dakṣa, the great lord Śiva, the goal of the good, returned to Kailāsa along with his Gaṇas. He was greatly delighted.

आगत्य स्वगिरिं शंभुस्सस्मार स्वप्रियां सतीम् ॥ गणेभ्यः कथयामास प्रधानेभ्यश्च तत्कथाम् ॥३२॥
Agatya svagiriM zaMbhussasmAra svapriyAM satIm ॥ gaNebhyaH kathayAmAsa pradhAnebhyazca tatkathAm ॥32॥
After returning to his mountain, Śiva remembered His beloved Satī and mentioned her story to the most important of his Gaṇas.

कालं निनाय विज्ञानी बहु तच्चरितं वदन्॥ लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रित्य दर्शयन् कामितां प्रभुः ॥३३॥
kAlaM ninAya vijJAnI bahu taccaritaM vadan॥ laukikIM gatimAzritya darzayan kAmitAM prabhuH ॥33॥
Narrating her story, lord Śiva passed many days. He then evinced the lover’s humour according to the conventions of the world.

नानीतिकारकः स्वामी परब्रह्म सतां गतिः॥ तस्य मोहः क्व वा शोकः क्व विकारः परो मुने ॥३४॥
nAnItikArakaH svAmI parabrahma satAM gatiH॥ tasya mohaH kva vA zokaH kva vikAraH paro mune ॥34॥
O sage, the lord is never unjust. The supreme Brahman is the goal of the good. How can He be deluded? What sorrow has He? How can he have other aberrations?

अहं विष्णुश्च जानीवस्तद्भेदं न कदाचन ॥ केपरे मुनयो देवा मनुषाद्याश्च योगिनः ॥३५॥
ahaM viSNuzca jAnIvastadbhedaM na kadAcana ॥ kepare munayo devA manuSAdyAzca yoginaH ॥35॥
Even Viṣṇu and I do not know His real secret. What then about others, the sages, gods, human beings and even Yogins.

महिमा शांकरोनंतो दुर्विज्ञेयो मनीषिभिः ॥ भक्तज्ञातश्च सद्भक्त्या तत्प्रसादाद्विना श्रमम् ॥३६॥
mahimA zAMkaronaMto durvijJeyo manISibhiH ॥ bhaktajJAtazca sadbhaktyA tatprasAdAdvinA zramam ॥36॥
The greatness of Śiva is endless and inscrutable even to the learned sages. It is known to the devotees without difficulty, thanks to good devotion and his favour.

एकोपि न विकारो हि शिवस्य परमात्मनः ॥ संदर्शयति लोकेभ्यः कृत्वा तां तादृशीं गतिम्॥३७॥
ekopi na vikAro hi zivasya paramAtmanaH ॥ saMdarzayati lokebhyaH kRtvA tAM tAdRzIM gatim॥37॥
There is no emotion or aberration at all in Śiva the supreme Being. He points out to the people of the world by his different actions, their respective goals.

यत्पठित्वा च संश्रुत्य सर्वलोकसुधीर्मुने॥ लभते सद्गतिं दिब्यामिहापि सुखमुत्तमम्॥३८॥
yatpaThitvA ca saMzrutya sarvalokasudhIrmune॥ labhate sadgatiM dibyAmihApi sukhamuttamam॥38॥
O sage, by reading or listening to this, intelligent persons in the world secure good goal hereafter and excellent happiness in this world.

इत्थं दाक्षायणी हित्वा निजदेहं सती पुनः ॥ जज्ञे हिमवतः पत्न्यां मेनायामिति विश्रुतम् ॥३९॥
itthaM dAkSAyaNI hitvA nijadehaM satI punaH ॥ jajJe himavataH patnyAM menAyAmiti vizrutam ॥39॥
After forsaking her body thus, Satī, the daughter of Dakṣa, was born as the daughter of Menā, the wife of Himavat. This is well known.

पुनः कृत्वा तपस्तत्र शिवं वव्रे पतिं च सा ॥ गौरी भूत्वार्द्धवामांगी लीलाश्चक्रेद्भुताश्शिवा ॥2-2-43-४०॥
punaH kRtvA tapastatra zivaM vavre patiM ca sA ॥ gaurI bhUtvArddhavAmAMgI lIlAzcakredbhutAzzivA ॥2-2-43-40॥
After performing penance again she wooed Śiva as her husband. Attaining white complexion she performed many wonderful, divine sports and gained half the body of Śiva.

इत्थं सतीचरित्रं ते वर्णितं परमाद्भुतम् ॥ भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं दिव्यं सर्वकामप्रदायकम् ॥ ४१ ॥
itthaM satIcaritraM te varNitaM paramAdbhutam ॥ bhuktimuktipradaM divyaM sarvakAmapradAyakam ॥ 41 ॥
Thus I have described the fascinating story of Satī to you which confers worldly pleasures and salvation, which is divine and bestows all wishes.

इदमाख्यानमनघं पवित्रं परपावनम् ॥ स्वर्ग्यं यशस्यमायुष्यं पुत्रपौत्रफलप्रदम् ॥ ४२ ॥
idamAkhyAnamanaghaM pavitraM parapAvanam ॥ svargyaM yazasyamAyuSyaM putrapautraphalapradam ॥ 42 ॥
This narrative is flawless, pure, sanctifying, conferring heavenly pleasures, glory, longevity and the pleasure of sons and grandsons.

य इदं शृणुयाद्भक्त्या श्रावयेद्भक्तिमान्नरान् ॥ सर्वकर्मा लभेत्तात परत्र परमां गतिम् ॥ ४३ ॥
ya idaM zRNuyAdbhaktyA zrAvayedbhaktimAnnarAn ॥ sarvakarmA labhettAta paratra paramAM gatim ॥ 43 ॥
Whoever listens to this or recites this with devotion, O dear, will attain the greatest goal in every rite.

यः पठेत्पाठयेद्वापि समाख्यानमिदं शुभम् ॥ सोपि भुक्त्वाखिलान् भोगानंते मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् ॥ ४४ ॥
yaH paThetpAThayedvApi samAkhyAnamidaM zubham ॥ sopi bhuktvAkhilAn bhogAnaMte mokSamavApnuyAt ॥ 44 ॥
He who reads or teaches this auspicious narrative will attain salvation on death after enjoying all worldly pleasures.
