Brahmā said: Lord Śiva was delighted on being conciliated and cajolled by Viṣṇu, Brahmā and the sages.

AzvAsya devAn viSNvAdInvihasya karuNAnidhiH। uvAca paramezAnaH kurvan paramanugraham ॥2॥
Consoling Viṣṇu and other devas and laughing, the merciful lord Śiva blessed them and spoke.

zrImahAdeva uvAca ॥ zRNutaM sAvadhAnena mama vAkyaM surottamau ॥ yathArthaM vacmi vAM tAta vAM krodhaM sarvadAsaham ॥ 3 ॥
Lord Śiva said: O excellent devas, both of you listen with attention. O dear ones, I shall state the truth. I have always borne your wrath.

nAghaM tanau tu bAlAnAM varNamevAnuciMtaye ॥ mama mAyAbhibhUtAnAM daMDastatra dhRto mayA ॥ 4 ॥
I do not take into account the sin committed by my children. I have inflicted punishment on those who are afflicted by my illusion.

dakSasya yajJabhaMgoyaM na kRtazca mayA kvacit ॥ paraM dveSTi pareSAM yadAtmanastadbhaviSyati ॥5॥
The destruction of the sacrifice of Dakṣa was not done by me. If a person hates another, ultimately it recoils on him alone.

pareSAM kledanaM karma na kAryaM tatkadAcana॥ paraM dveSTi pareSAM yadAtmanastadbhaviSyati ॥ 6 ॥
No action that involves the affliction of others will be indulged in by me at any time. If anyone hates another it will recoil on him alone.

dakSasya yajJazIrSNo hi bhavatvajamukhaM ziraH ॥ mitranetreNa saMpazyedyajJabhAgaM bhagassuraH ॥ 7 ॥
Let the head (the sacrificial head) of Dakṣa be that of a goat. Let the god Bhaga receive his share in the sacrifice in conjunction with the sun.

pUSAbhidhassurastAtau dadbhiryajJasupiSTabhuk ॥ yAjamAnairbhagnadaMtassatyametanmayoditam ॥8॥
O dear ones, the god Pūṣan who used to grip the cooked offerings in a sacrifice with his teeth has been rendered broken-toothed and will remain as such. I have spoken the truth.

bastazmazrurbhavedeva bhRgurmama virodha kRt॥ devAH prakRtisarvAMgA ye ma ucchedanaM daduH॥9॥
Bhṛgu who opposed me shall become goat-bearded. The gods who tried to uproot me shall have their physical bodies.

bAhubhyAmazvinau pUSNo hastAbhyAM kRtavAhakau ॥ bhavaMtvadhvaryavazcAnye bhavatprItyA mayoditam ॥2-2-42-10॥
Let the Adhvaryu priests be borne through the arms of Aśvins and the hands of Pūṣan. I have spoken thus out of love for you.

Brahmā said: Saying thus, the lord Śiva though merciful, yet of imperial nature, the lord of the mobile and immobile and the follower of Vedic injunctions, stopped.

tadA sarva surAdyAste zrutvA zaMkarabhASitam॥ sAdhusAdhviti saMprocuH parituSTAH saviSNvajAH॥12॥
On hearing his speech, Viṣṇu and other gods were delighted and sent out cries of approbation.

tatazzaMbhuM samAmaMtrya mayA viSNussurarSibhiH॥ bhUyastaddevayajanaM yayau ca parayA mudA॥13॥
Then, having duly invited Lord Shambhu (Shiva), Vishnu, along with the sages among the gods (divine rishis), joyfully proceeded once more to that divine sacrificial ceremony.

evaM teSAM prArthanayA viSNuprabhRtibhissuraiH॥ yayau kanakhalaM zaMbhuryajJavATaM prajApateH॥14॥
Thus, upon the earnest request of the gods, headed by Vishnu, Lord Shambhu (Shiva) proceeded to Kanakhala, to the sacrificial grounds of Prajapati (Daksha).

rudrastadA dadarzAtha vIrabhadreNa yatkRtam ॥ pradhvaMsaM taM kratostatra devarSINAM vizeSataH ॥ 15 ॥
Then Rudra saw the extent of destruction carried out by Vīrabhadra, of the sacrifice and of the celestial sages.

स्वाहा स्वधा तथा पूषा तुष्टिर्धृतिः सरस्वती ॥ तथान्ये ऋषयस्सर्वे पितरश्चाग्नयस्तथा ॥१६॥
svAhA svadhA tathA pUSA tuSTirdhRtiH sarasvatI ॥ tathAnye RSayassarve pitarazcAgnayastathA ॥16॥
Svaha, Svadha, as well as Pusha, Tushti, Dhriti, and Saraswati— along with all the other sages, the Pitris (ancestral spirits), and the various forms of Agni (fire gods).

येऽन्ये च बहवस्तत्र यक्षगंधवर्राक्षसाः ॥ त्रोटिता लुंचिताश्चैव मृताः केचिद्रणाजिरे ॥ १७॥
ye'nye ca bahavastatra yakSagaMdhavarrAkSasAH ॥ troTitA luMcitAzcaiva mRtAH kecidraNAjire ॥ 17॥
And many others there—Yakshas, Gandharvas, and Rakshasas— were torn apart, dismembered, and some were even slain on the battlefield.

यज्ञं तथाविधं दृष्ट्वा समाहूय गणाधिपम् ॥ वीरभद्रं महावीरमुवाच प्रहसन् प्रभुः ॥१८ ॥
yajJaM tathAvidhaM dRSTvA samAhUya gaNAdhipam ॥ vIrabhadraM mahAvIramuvAca prahasan prabhuH ॥18 ॥
On seeing this destruction of the sacrifice, He called the chieftain of Gaṇas, Vīrabhadra of great virility and spoke to him.

वीरभद्र महाबाहो किं कृतं कर्म ते त्विदम् ॥ महान्दंडो धृतस्तात देवर्ष्यादिषु सत्वरम् ॥ १९ ॥
vIrabhadra mahAbAho kiM kRtaM karma te tvidam ॥ mahAndaMDo dhRtastAta devarSyAdiSu satvaram ॥ 19 ॥
O Vīrabhadra of powerful arms, what is it that you have done? O dear, in your hurry you have inflicted very severe punishment on the celestial sages and others.

दक्षमानय शीघ्रं त्वं येनेदं कृतमीदृशम् ॥ यज्ञो विलक्षणस्तात यस्येदं फलमीदृशम् ॥2-2-42-२०॥
dakSamAnaya zIghraM tvaM yenedaM kRtamIdRzam ॥ yajJo vilakSaNastAta yasyedaM phalamIdRzam ॥2-2-42-20॥
Bring Dakṣa here quickly. O dear, he performed a sacrifice contrary to rules, whence this result arose.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ evamuktazzaMkareNa vIrabhadrastvarAnvitaH ॥ kabaMdhamAnayitvAgre tasya zaMbhorathAkSipat ॥21॥
Brahmā said: Thus commanded by Śiva, Vīrabhadra, hastened to bring the headless body of Dakṣa which he threw in front of Śiva.

विशिरस्कं च तं दृष्ट्वा शंकरो लोकशंकरः ॥ वीरभद्रमुवाचाग्रे विहसन्मुनिसत्तम ॥ २२ ॥
viziraskaM ca taM dRSTvA zaMkaro lokazaMkaraH ॥ vIrabhadramuvAcAgre vihasanmunisattama ॥ 22 ॥
Seeing him (Daksha) without a head, Lord Shankara—the benefactor of the world—smiled and spoke to Veerabhadra in front of the sages, O best of sages.

ziraH kutreti tenokte vIrabhadro'bravItprabhuH ॥ mayA ziro hutaM cAgnau tadAnImeva zaMkara ॥23॥
When asked, “Where is the head?” by Shankara, Veerabhadra replied, “O Lord, I have already offered it into the sacrificial fire, at that very moment, O Shankara.”

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य वीरभद्रस्य शंकरः ॥ देवान् तथाज्ञपत्प्रीत्या यदुक्तं तत्पुरा प्रभुः ॥ २४ ॥
iti zrutvA vacastasya vIrabhadrasya zaMkaraH ॥ devAn tathAjJapatprItyA yaduktaM tatpurA prabhuH ॥ 24 ॥
On hearing the words of Vīrabhadra, Śiva commanded the gods in the manner as mentioned before.

विधाय कार्त्स्न्येन च तद्यदाह भगवान् भवः ॥ मया विष्ण्वादयः सर्वे भृग्वादीनथ सत्वरम् ॥२५॥
vidhAya kArtsnyena ca tadyadAha bhagavAn bhavaH ॥ mayA viSNvAdayaH sarve bhRgvAdInatha satvaram ॥25॥
After doing in accordance with what lord Śiva had said, Viṣṇu, the gods and I acquainted Bhṛgu with the same quickly.

अथ प्रजापतेस्तस्य सवनीयपशोश्शिरः॥ बस्तस्य संदधुश्शंभोः कायेनारं सुशासनात्॥२६॥
atha prajApatestasya savanIyapazozziraH॥ bastasya saMdadhuzzaMbhoH kAyenAraM suzAsanAt॥26॥
At the bidding of Śiva, they immediately joined the head of the sacrificial animal, the goat, with the body of Dakṣa.

संधीयमाने शिरसि शंभुसद्दृष्टिवीक्षितः ॥ सद्यस्सुप्त इवोत्तस्थौ लब्धप्राणः प्रजापतिः॥२७॥
saMdhIyamAne zirasi zaMbhusaddRSTivIkSitaH ॥ sadyassupta ivottasthau labdhaprANaH prajApatiH॥27॥
When the head was joined and Śiva looked at it, Dakṣa regained his life and awoke as if from sleep.

utthitazcAgratazzaMbhuM dadarza karuNAnidhim ॥ dakSaH prItamatiH prItyA saMsthitaH suprasannadhIH॥28॥
On waking up he saw Śiva, the merciful, in front of him. Dakṣa stood there happy and joyful.

पुरा हर महाद्वेषकलिलात्माभवद्धि सः॥ शिवावलोकनात्सद्यश्शरच्चन्द्र इवामलः॥२९॥
purA hara mahAdveSakalilAtmAbhavaddhi saH॥ zivAvalokanAtsadyazzaraccandra ivAmalaH॥29॥
Formerly his mind had been contaminated and affected by a great hatred towards Śiva. But now immediately after seeing him, his mind became pure like the autumnal moon.

भवं स्तोतुमना सोथ नाशक्नोदनुरागतः ॥ उत्कंठाविकलत्वाच्च संपरेतां सुतां स्मरन् ॥ 2-2-42-३० ॥
bhavaM stotumanA sotha nAzaknodanurAgataH ॥ utkaMThAvikalatvAcca saMparetAM sutAM smaran ॥ 2-2-42-30 ॥
He wanted to eulogise Śiva but could not do so because of his affection, emotional disturbance and anxiety for his deceased daughter.

अथ दक्षः प्रसन्नात्मा शिवं लज्जासमन्वितः ॥ तुष्टाव प्रणतो भूत्वा शंकरं लोकशंकरम् ॥ ३१ ॥
atha dakSaH prasannAtmA zivaM lajjAsamanvitaH ॥ tuSTAva praNato bhUtvA zaMkaraM lokazaMkaram ॥ 31 ॥
Then after regaining composure and peace of mind, the ashamed Dakṣa bowed and eulogised Śiva, the benefactor of the worlds.

दक्ष उवाच ॥ नमामि देव वरदं वरेण्यं महेश्वरं ज्ञाननिधिं सनातनम् ॥ नमामि देवाधिपतीश्वरं हरं सदासुखाढ्यं जगदेकबांधवम् ॥३२॥
dakSa uvAca ॥ namAmi deva varadaM vareNyaM mahezvaraM jJAnanidhiM sanAtanam ॥ namAmi devAdhipatIzvaraM haraM sadAsukhADhyaM jagadekabAMdhavam ॥32॥
Dakṣa said: I bow to the great lord, the supreme being, the bestower of boons, the store of knowledge, the eternal. I bow to Śiva, the lord of the chief of Gods, always conferring happiness and the sole kinsman of the universe.

नमामि विश्वेश्वर विश्वरूपं पुरातनं ब्रह्मनिजात्मरूपम्॥ नमामि शर्वं भव भावभावं परात्परं शंकरमानतोमि ॥३३॥
namAmi vizvezvara vizvarUpaM purAtanaM brahmanijAtmarUpam॥ namAmi zarvaM bhava bhAvabhAvaM parAtparaM zaMkaramAnatomi ॥33॥
I bow to the lord of the universe, of cosmic form, the primordial Being and the form of Brahman itself. I bow to Śiva, the conceiver of world’s happiness and the greater than the greatest.

देवदेव महादेव कृपां कुरु नमोस्तु ते ॥ अपराधं क्षमस्वाद्य मम शंभो कृपानिधे ॥ ॥३४॥
devadeva mahAdeva kRpAM kuru namostu te ॥ aparAdhaM kSamasvAdya mama zaMbho kRpAnidhe ॥ ॥34॥
O lord, lord of Devas, be merciful. Obeisance to thee. O Śiva, the storehouse of mercy, forgive my faults.

अनुग्रहः कृतस्ते हि दंडव्याजेन शंकर ॥ खलोहं मूढधीर्देव ज्ञातं तत्त्वं मया न ते ॥ ३५ ॥
anugrahaH kRtaste hi daMDavyAjena zaMkara ॥ khalohaM mUDhadhIrdeva jJAtaM tattvaM mayA na te ॥ 35 ॥
O, Śiva, Thou hast blessed me under the pretext of punishing me. O lord, I have been wicked and foolish. Thy real nature I could not understand.

अद्य ज्ञातं मया तत्त्वं सर्वोपरि भवान्मतः ॥ विष्णुब्रह्मादिभिस्सेव्यो वेदवेद्यो महेश्वरः॥३६॥॥
adya jJAtaM mayA tattvaM sarvopari bhavAnmataH ॥ viSNubrahmAdibhissevyo vedavedyo mahezvaraH॥36॥॥
Today I have realised the truth. Thou art above all. Thou art served by Viṣṇu, Brahmā and others. Thou art the supreme Being known only through the Vedas.

साधूनां कल्पवृक्षस्त्वं दुष्टानां दंडधृक्सदा ॥ स्वतंत्रः परमात्मा हि भक्ताभीष्टवरप्रदः ॥३७॥
sAdhUnAM kalpavRkSastvaM duSTAnAM daMDadhRksadA ॥ svataMtraH paramAtmA hi bhaktAbhISTavarapradaH ॥37॥
Thou art the wish-yielding Kalpa tree to the good. Thou punishest the wicked always. Thou art the independent great soul. Thou art the bestower of desired boons on the devotees.

विद्यातपोव्रतधरानसृजः प्रथमं द्विजा ॥ आत्मतत्त्वं समावेत्तुं मुखतः परमेश्वरः ॥३८॥
vidyAtapovratadharAnasRjaH prathamaM dvijA ॥ AtmatattvaM samAvettuM mukhataH paramezvaraH ॥38॥
Thou hast created the brahmins first who uphold learning, penance and sacred rites, in order to realise the reality of the soul, O great lord, from thy mouth.

सर्वापद्भ्यः पालयिता गोपतिस्तु पशूनिव ॥ गृहीतदंडो दुष्टांस्तान् मर्यादापरिपालकः ॥३९॥
sarvApadbhyaH pAlayitA gopatistu pazUniva ॥ gRhItadaMDo duSTAMstAn maryAdAparipAlakaH ॥39॥
Just as the master of cowherds protects the cows from adversities, so also thou art the saviour of the good. Thou art the watch and ward of Social Conventions. Thou punishest the wicked.

mayA duruktavizikhaiH praviddhaH paramezvaraH ॥ amarAnatidInAzAn madanugrahakArakaH ॥2-2-42-40॥
The great lord has been wounded by me by the shafts of piercing harsh words. I have made the gods, who conferred blessings on me, very dejected.

O Śiva, the helper of the distressed, Thou art greater than the greatest. Thou art favourably disposed to thy devotees. Thou art satisfied by thine own action of great value.

Then the delighted Viṣṇu, with palms joined in reverence, eulogised the bull-bannered Śiva in a speech choked with tears after bowing to him.

Viṣṇu said: O great God, O supreme God, the bestower of blessings on the world, O storehouse of mercy, the helper of the distressed, Thou art the great Brahman, the great soul.

This Dakṣa is my devotee. He has been wicked to censure you before. He has committed an offence making us meritless. O great lord, Thou must forgive him since thou art free from aberrations.

O Śiva, out of delusion. I too have committed offence against you since I took sides with Dakṣa and fought with Vīrabhadra, Thy attendant.

O Sadāśiva, Thou art my master, the supreme Brahman. I am Thy slave. I shall be sustained by Thee always since thou art the father unto us all.

O Śiva, blessing has been conferred on my son in granting him a body. Thou dost not mind the offence to Thee. Resuscitate the sacrifice of Dakṣa.

O Lord of gods, be pleased. Remove all curses. Thou art my conscious encourager. Thou alone art the restrainer.

Then Indra and other gods, the guardians of the quarters, of good mentality lauded lord Śiva whose lotuslike face beamed with brilliance.

The other gods too of delighted minds, the Siddhas, the sages and the Prajāpatis lauded Śiva joyously.

tathopadevanAgAzca sadasyA brAhmaNAstathA ॥ praNamya parayA bhaktyA tuSTuvuzca pRthak pRthak॥55॥
Then the gods of lower rank, Nāgas, and the brahmins, the members of the assembly, bowed with devotion and eulogised Śiva severally.
