Brahmā said: On hearing these words of lord Śiva with great respect, Vīrabhadra was highly delighted. He bowed to Him.

zAsanaM zirasA dhRtvA devadevasya zUlinaH। pracacAla tataH zIghraM vIrabhadro makhaM prati॥2॥
Receiving his command, with his head bowed down in reverence, Vīrabhadra set off immediately to the place of sacrifice.

To add lustre to the campaign, Śiva sent crores of Gaṇas, very valorous and equal to the fire of dissolution.

Those powerful Gaṇas enthusiastic and gay both preceded and followed Vīrabhadra.

All the personal attendants of Kālakāla assuming the form of Rudra accompanied Vīrabhadra in their hundreds and thousands.

gaNaissametaH kilatairmahAtmA sa vIrabhadro haraveSabhUSaNaH ॥ sahasrabAhurbhujagAdhipADhyo yayau rathasthaH prabalotibhIkaraH ॥6॥
Accompanied by these Gaṇas, the noble-souled Vīrabhadra who had the same dress, features and embellishments as Śiva went ahead in a chariot. He had a thousand arms each like hoods of the serpent king. He was powerful and terrifying.

nalvAnaM ca sahasre dve pramANaM syaMdanasya hi ॥ ayutenaiva siMhAnAM vAhanAnAM prayatnataH ॥7॥
The chariots numbered as many as two thousand Nalvas of land could contain. Ten thousand lions pulled the chariots strenuously.

Many strong lions, tigers, crocodiles, huge fishes and thousands of elephants constituted his body-guard.

vIrabhadre pracalite dakSanAzAya satvaram ॥ kalpavRkSasamutsRSTA puSpavRSTirabhUttadA ॥ 9 ॥
When Vīrabhadra set-off quickly for slaying Dakṣa, a shower of flowers fell there let loose by the divine Kalpa tree.

tuSTuvuzca gaNA vIra zipiviSTe praceSTitam ॥ cakruH kutUhalaM sarve tasmiMzca gamanotsavaiH ॥2-2-33-10॥
During the festivities of their march, the Gaṇas eulogised the heroic Vīrabhadra who was carrying out the job of Śiva and they exhibited their enthusiasm.

kAlI kAtyAyinIzAnI cAmuMDA muMDamardinI ॥ bhadrakAlI tathA bhadrA tvaritA vaiSNavI tathA ॥ 11 ॥
Translation: Kālī, Kātyāyanī, Īshānī (the sovereign goddess), Chāmuṇḍā (slayer of Chanda and Munda), Muṇḍamardinī (crusher of the demon Munda), Bhadrakālī, Bhadrā, Tvaritā (swift one), and Vaiṣṇavī (the energy of Vishnu).

Accompanied by these nine forms of Durgā and united with Mahākālī herself, She (Mahākālī) proceeded for the destruction of Dakṣa’s sacrifice, along with hosts of spirits and beings.

DAkinI zAkinI caiva bhUtapramathaguhyakAH ॥ kUSmAMDAH parpaTA zcaiva caTakA brahmarAkSasAH ॥ 13 ॥
Dākinīs, Shākinīs, Bhūtas (spirits), Pramathas (Shiva’s attendants), Guhyakas (secretive beings), Kūṣmāṇḍas (demonic spirits), Parpaṭās, Chaṭakās, and Brahmarākṣasas (powerful demonic spirits of fallen Brahmins).

The Bhairavas and Kṣetrapālas (guardians of the quarters), destroyers of Dakṣa’s sacrifice, Swiftly set out — these valiant beings, executing the command of Lord Shiva.

The host of Yoginīs with their sixty-four groups set out angrily and hurriedly to destroy Dakṣa’s sacrifice.

teSAM gaNAnAM sarveSAM saMkhyAnaM zRNu nArada ॥ mahAbalavatAM saMghomukhyAnAM dhairyazAlinAm ॥16॥
O Nārada, listen to the numerical strength of the most important and courageous of those groups.

abhyayAcchaMkukarNazca dazakoTyA gaNezvaraH॥ dazabhiH kekarAkSazca vikRto STAbhireva ॥17॥
The chief of Gaṇas-Śaṅkukarṇa went ahead with ten crores of his attendants; Kekarākṣa with ten crores and Vikṛta with eight crores.

catuHSaSTyA vizAkhazca navabhiH pAriyAtrikaH ॥ SaDbhissarvAGgako vIrastathaiva vikRtAnanaH ॥ 18 ॥
Viśākha with sixty-four crores, Pāriyātraka with nine crores; Sarvāṅkaka and the heroic Vikṛtānana each with six crores.

jvAlakezo dvAdazabhiH koTibhirgaNapuMgavaH ॥ saptabhiH samadajjImAn dudrabhoSTAbhireva ca ॥19॥
The chief of Gaṇas, Jvālakeśa went with twelve crores; Dhīmān with seven crores and Dudrabha with eight crores.

Kapālīśa with five crores and the Sandāraka group. with six crores; Koṭikuṇḍa with crores of crores.

viSTaMbho'STAbhirvIraiH koTibhirgaNasaptamaH ॥ sahasrakoTibhistAta saMnAdaH pippalastathA ॥ 21 ॥
Viṣṭambha, the most excellent of the Gaṇas, went with sixty-four crores of heroes. O dear, Sannāda and Pippala went with a thousand crores.

AvezanastathASTAbhiraSTAbhizcaMdratApanaH ॥ mahAvezaH sahasreNa koTinA gaNapo vRtaH ॥ 22 ॥
Āveśana went with eight crores and Candratāpana too with eight crores. Mahāveśa, the chief of Gaṇas, was accompanied by a thousand crores.

kuNDI dvAdazakoTIbhistathA parvatako mune ॥ vinAzituM dakSayajJaM niryayau gaNasattama ॥ 23 ॥
O sage, Kuṇḍī the most excellent of the Gaṇas and Pavataka went each with twelve crores in order to destroy Dakṣa’s sacrifice.

kAlazca kAlakazcaiva mahAkAlastathaiva ca ॥ koTInAM zatakenaiva dakSayajJaM yayau prati ॥ 24 ॥
Kāla, Kālaka and Mahākāla went to the sacrifice of Dakṣa with a hundred crores.

Agnikṛt with hundred crores; Agnimukha with a crore; Ādityamūrdhā and Ghanāvaha each with a crore.

sannAhazzatakoTyA ca koTyA ca kumudo gaNaH ॥ amoghaH kokilazcaiva koTikoTyA gaNAdhipaH ॥ 26 ॥
Sannāha with hundred crores; Kumuda with a crore; Amogha and Kokila the chief of Gaṇas each with a crore of crores.

kASThAgUDhazcatuHSaSTyA sukezI vRSabhastathA ॥ sumantrako gaNAdhIzastathA tAta suniryayau ॥ 27 ॥
Kāṣṭhāgūḍha, Sukeśī, Vṛṣabha, and Sumantraka the chief of Gaṇas, O dear, each went with sixty-four crores.

kAkapAdodaraH SaSTikoTibhirgaNasattamaH ॥ tathA santAnakaH SaSTikoTibhirgaNapuMgavaH ॥ 28 ॥
Kākapādodara and Santānaka both excellent chiefs of Gaṇas went with sixty crores each.

Mahābala as well as Puṅgava went with nine crores each.

madhupiMgastathA tAta gaNAdhIzo hi niryayau ॥ nIlo navatyA koTInAM pUrNabhadrastathaiva ca ॥ 2-2-33-30 ॥
O dear, the chief of Gaṇas, Madhupiṅga was the leader of ninety crores. Pūrṇabhadra also started with as many attendants.

Caturvaktra, the chief of Gaṇas, started with hundred crores.

virUpAkSazca koTInAM catuHSaSTyA gaNezvaraH ॥ tAlaketuH SaDAsyazca paMcAsyazca gaNAdhipaH ॥32॥
Virūpākṣa, the lord of Gaṇas, with sixty-four crores. So also the chiefs of Gaṇas Tālaketu, Ṣaḍāsya and Pañcāsya.

संवर्तकस्तथा चैव कुलीशश्च स्वयं प्रभुः ॥ लोकांतकश्च दीप्तात्मा तथा दैत्यान्तको मुने ॥ ३३ ॥
saMvartakastathA caiva kulIzazca svayaM prabhuH ॥ lokAMtakazca dIptAtmA tathA daityAntako mune ॥ 33 ॥
Sage! (O Muni!) Samvartaka, and also Kulīśa, the Lord Himself, Lokāntaka (the ender of worlds), brilliant in spirit, and Daityāntaka (slayer of demons) — all these manifestations (or aspects) of the Lord appeared.

गणो भृंगीरिटिः श्रीमान् देवदेवप्रियस्तथा ॥ अशनिर्भालकश्चैव चतुःषष्ट्या सह्स्रकः ॥ ३४ ॥
gaNo bhRMgIriTiH zrImAn devadevapriyastathA ॥ azanirbhAlakazcaiva catuHSaSTyA sahsrakaH ॥ 34 ॥
There was the attendant (Gaṇa) Bhr̥ṅgīriṭiḥ, the illustrious one, also the beloved of the Lord of Lords (Devadeva-priya), Aśani (lightning), and Bhālaka, along with sixty-four thousand (64,000) followers.

कोटिकोटिसहस्राणां शतैर्विंश तिभिर्वृतः ॥ वीरेशो ह्यभ्ययाद्वीरः वीरभद्र शिवाज्ञया ॥ ३५ ॥
koTikoTisahasrANAM zatairviMza tibhirvRtaH ॥ vIrezo hyabhyayAdvIraH vIrabhadra zivAjJayA ॥ 35 ॥
Thus at the bidding of Śiva, the heroic Vīrabhadra went ahead followed by crores and crores, thousands and thousands, hundreds and hundreds of Gaṇas.

भूतकोटिसहस्रैस्तु प्रययौ कोटिभिस्त्रिभिः ॥ रोमजैः श्वगणै श्चैव तथा वीरो ययौ द्रुतम् ॥ ३६ ॥
bhUtakoTisahasraistu prayayau koTibhistribhiH ॥ romajaiH zvagaNai zcaiva tathA vIro yayau drutam ॥ 36 ॥
The hero was accompanied by thousands of crores of goblins, and three crores of canine species born of the hair of Śiva. He went ahead quickly.

तदा भेरीमहानादः शंखाश्च विविधस्वनाः ॥ जटाहरोमुखाश्चैव शृंगाणि विविधानि च ॥ ३७ ॥
tadA bherImahAnAdaH zaMkhAzca vividhasvanAH ॥ jaTAharomukhAzcaiva zRMgANi vividhAni ca ॥ 37 ॥
Trumpets and drums sounded loudly. Conchs blew in diverse ways. Horns of all kinds were blown.

ते तानि विततान्येव बंधनानि सुखानि च ॥ वादित्राणि विनेदुश्च विविधानि महोत्सवे ॥ ३८ ॥
te tAni vitatAnyeva baMdhanAni sukhAni ca ॥ vAditrANi vineduzca vividhAni mahotsave ॥ 38 ॥
In that joyous festivity various musical instruments were played in a pleasing manner.

vIrabhadrasya yAtrAyAM sabalasya mahAmune ॥ zakunAnyabhavaMstatra bhUrINi sukhadAni ca ॥ 39 ॥
While the march of Vīrabhadra was in progress, O great sage, many pleasing fortutious omens occurred.
