॥ nArada uvAca ॥ maunIbhUtA yadA sAsItsatI zaMkaravallabhA ॥ caritraM kimabhUttatra vidhe tadvada cAdarAt ॥ 1 ॥
Nārada said: When Satī, Śiva’s beloved became silent what happened there? O Brahmā please tell me.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ मौनीभूता सती देवी स्मृत्वा स्वपतिमादरात ॥ क्षितावुदीच्यां सहसा निषसाद प्रशांतधीः ॥ २ ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ maunIbhUtA satI devI smRtvA svapatimAdarAta ॥ kSitAvudIcyAM sahasA niSasAda prazAMtadhIH ॥ 2 ॥
Brahmā said: Observing silence and remembering her lord with great respect, Satī the Goddess calmed down and sat on the ground in the northern wing.

जलमाचम्य विधिवत् संवृता वाससा शुचिः ॥ दृङ्निमील्य पतिं स्मृत्वा योगमार्गं समाविशत् ॥३॥
jalamAcamya vidhivat saMvRtA vAsasA zuciH ॥ dRGnimIlya patiM smRtvA yogamArgaM samAvizat ॥3॥
Having sipped water duly, covering up her body entirely with her cloth she closed her eyes and remembered her lord. She then entered the yogic trance.

कृत्वासमानावनिलौ प्राणापानौ सितानना॥ उत्थाप्योदानमथ च यत्नात्सा नाभिचक्रतः॥४॥
kRtvAsamAnAvanilau prANApAnau sitAnanA॥ utthApyodAnamatha ca yatnAtsA nAbhicakrataH॥4॥
Having equalized the two life-breaths—Prāṇa and Apāna—within herself, the fair-faced one (or practitioner) then with effort lifted Uḍāna from the navel chakra (nābhi chakra).

हृदि स्थाप्योरसि धिया स्थितं कंठाद्भ्रुवोस्सती ॥ अनिंदितानयन्मध्यं शंकरप्राणवल्लभा ॥ ५ ॥
hRdi sthApyorasi dhiyA sthitaM kaMThAdbhruvossatI ॥ aniMditAnayanmadhyaM zaMkaraprANavallabhA ॥ 5 ॥
Having first established the vital energy in the heart, and then with concentrated intellect directing it to the chest, the flawless Sati, beloved of Shiva's very breath, drew the energy upward from the throat to the center between the eyebrows.

एवं स्वदेहं सहसा दक्षकोपाज्जिहासती ॥ दग्धे गात्रे वायुशुचिर्धारणं योगमार्गतः ॥ ६ ॥
evaM svadehaM sahasA dakSakopAjjihAsatI ॥ dagdhe gAtre vAyuzucirdhAraNaM yogamArgataH ॥ 6 ॥
Thus, desiring to abandon her body at once because of her anger toward Dakṣa, as her limbs were being consumed by fire, she retained the pure vital air (prāṇa) through the path of Yoga.

ततस्स्वभर्तुश्चरणं चिंतयंती न चापरम् ॥ अपश्यत्सा सती तत्र योगमार्गनिविष्टधीः ॥ ७ ॥
tatassvabhartuzcaraNaM ciMtayaMtI na cAparam ॥ apazyatsA satI tatra yogamArganiviSTadhIH ॥ 7 ॥
Then, with her mind fixed in the path of Yoga, Sati meditated only upon the feet of her husband (Shiva) and saw nothing else.

हतकल्मषतद्देहः प्रापतच्च तदग्निना ॥ भस्मसादभवत्सद्यो मुनिश्रेष्ठ तदिच्छया ॥ ८ ॥।
hatakalmaSataddehaH prApatacca tadagninA ॥ bhasmasAdabhavatsadyo munizreSTha tadicchayA ॥ 8 ॥।
Her body divested of its sins fell in the yogic fire and was reduced to ashes, O excellent sage, in accordance with her own wish.

तत्पश्यतां च खे भूमौ वादोऽभूत्सुमहांस्तदा ॥ हाहेति सोद्भुतश्चित्रस्सुरादीनां भयावहः ॥९॥
tatpazyatAM ca khe bhUmau vAdo'bhUtsumahAMstadA ॥ hAheti sodbhutazcitrassurAdInAM bhayAvahaH ॥9॥
The loud shouts and cries of “Hā. Hā” of those who witnessed it spread everywhere on the earth and rose up in the sky. Everything was surprisingly wonderful and terrifying to the devas and others.

हं प्रिया परा शंभोर्देवी दैवतमस्य हि ॥ अहादसून् सती केन सुदुष्टेन प्रकोपिता ॥2-2-30-१०॥
haM priyA parA zaMbhordevI daivatamasya hi ॥ ahAdasUn satI kena suduSTena prakopitA ॥2-2-30-10॥
“Alas, Śiva’s beloved Goddess, nay his deity, Satī has cast-off her life. Who is that wicked person who angered her?

अहो त्वनात्म्यं सुमहदस्य दक्षस्य पश्यत ॥ चराचरं प्रजा यस्य यत्पुत्रस्य प्रजापतेः ॥ ११ ॥
aho tvanAtmyaM sumahadasya dakSasya pazyata ॥ carAcaraM prajA yasya yatputrasya prajApateH ॥ 11 ॥
See the unholy unspiritual misdeed of Dakṣa the patriarch, the son of Brahmā whose subjects are the mobile and immobile creatures of the world.

अहोद्य द्विमनाऽभूत्सा सती देवी मनस्विनी ॥ वृषध्वजप्रियाऽभीक्ष्णं मानयोग्या सतां सदा ॥ १२ ॥
ahodya dvimanA'bhUtsA satI devI manasvinI ॥ vRSadhvajapriyA'bhIkSNaM mAnayogyA satAM sadA ॥ 12 ॥
Alas, Satī, the noble beloved of the bull-bannered deity has become dispirited. She ought to have been honoured duly.

सोयं दुर्मर्षहृदयो ब्रह्मधृक् स प्रजापतिः ॥ महतीमपकीर्तिं हि प्राप्स्यति त्वखिले भवे ॥ १३॥
soyaM durmarSahRdayo brahmadhRk sa prajApatiH ॥ mahatImapakIrtiM hi prApsyati tvakhile bhave ॥ 13॥
This patriarch of hardened heart, inimical to the Brahman, will definitely become infamous in the whole world.

यत्स्वांगजां सुतां शंभुद्विट् न्यषे धत्समुद्यताम् ॥ महानरकभोगी स मृतये नोऽपराधतः ॥ १४ ॥
yatsvAMgajAM sutAM zaMbhudviT nyaSe dhatsamudyatAm ॥ mahAnarakabhogI sa mRtaye no'parAdhataH ॥ 14 ॥
Since he refused to comply with the request of his own daughter he will be falling into a terrible hell after death due to his own guilt.

वदत्येवं जने सत्या दृष्ट्वाऽसुत्यागमद्भुतम् ॥ द्रुतं तत्पार्षदाः क्रोधादुदतिष्ठन्नुदायुधाः ॥१५॥
vadatyevaM jane satyA dRSTvA'sutyAgamadbhutam ॥ drutaM tatpArSadAH krodhAdudatiSThannudAyudhAH ॥15॥
When people were saying thus on seeing the self-immolation of Satī, her attendants rose up in anger with their weapons.

द्वारि स्थिता गणास्सर्वे रसायुतमिता रुषा ॥ शंकरस्य प्रभोस्ते वाऽकुध्यन्नतिमहाबलाः॥१६॥
dvAri sthitA gaNAssarve rasAyutamitA ruSA ॥ zaMkarasya prabhoste vA'kudhyannatimahAbalAH॥16॥
They had been waiting near the door numbering sixty thousand. Those powerful attendants of lord Śiva became furious.

हाहाकारमकुर्वंस्ते धिक्धिक् न इति वादिनः ॥ उच्चैस्सर्वेऽसकृद्वीरःश्शंकरस्य गणाधिपाः ॥ १७ ॥
hAhAkAramakurvaMste dhikdhik na iti vAdinaH ॥ uccaissarve'sakRdvIraHzzaMkarasya gaNAdhipAH ॥ 17 ॥
Those attendants of Śiva shouted exclamations—Hā Hā, fie, fie, no, no, loudly and frequently.

हाहाकारेण महता व्याप्त मासीद्दिगन्तरम् ॥ सर्वे प्रापन् भयं देवा मुनयोन्येपि ते स्थिताः ॥ १८ ॥
hAhAkAreNa mahatA vyApta mAsIddigantaram ॥ sarve prApan bhayaM devA munayonyepi te sthitAH ॥ 18 ॥
The quarters were pervaded with the shouts of Hā, Hā. The devas and sages who had assembled there were struck with fear.

गणास्संमंत्र्य ते सर्वेऽभूवन् क्रुद्धा उदायुधाः ॥ कुर्वन्तः प्रलयं वाद्यशस्त्रैर्व्याप्तं दिगंतरम् ॥ १९ ॥
gaNAssaMmaMtrya te sarve'bhUvan kruddhA udAyudhAH ॥ kurvantaH pralayaM vAdyazastrairvyAptaM digaMtaram ॥ 19 ॥
Consulting one another, the attendants lifted their weapons furiously and the atmosphere was pervaded with the sound of their arms.

शस्त्रैरघ्नन्निजांगानि केचित्तत्र शुचाकुलाः ॥ शिरोमुखानि देवर्षे सुतीक्ष्णैः प्राणनाशिभिः ॥ 2-2-30-२० ॥
zastrairaghnannijAMgAni kecittatra zucAkulAH ॥ ziromukhAni devarSe sutIkSNaiH prANanAzibhiH ॥ 2-2-30-20 ॥
O celestial sage, some of them excessively stricken with grief cut off their limbs with their weapons, some their heads, some their faces, with the sharp lethal weapons they had.

इत्थं ते विलयं प्राप्ता दाक्षायण्या समं तदा ॥ गणायुते द्वे च तदा तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥ ॥ २१ ॥
itthaM te vilayaM prAptA dAkSAyaNyA samaM tadA ॥ gaNAyute dve ca tadA tadadbhutamivAbhavat ॥ ॥ 21 ॥
Thus about twenty-thousand of those attendants courted death along with Satī. It was very surprising.

गणा नाशाऽवशिष्टा ये शंकरस्य महात्मनः ॥ दक्षं तं क्रोधितं हन्तुं मुदा तिष्ठन्नुदायुधाः ॥ २२ ॥
gaNA nAzA'vaziSTA ye zaMkarasya mahAtmanaH ॥ dakSaM taM krodhitaM hantuM mudA tiSThannudAyudhAH ॥ 22 ॥
Such of the attendants of the noble-souled Śiva who survived, jumped up with their weapons to kill the furious Dakṣa.

तेषामापततां वेगं निशम्य भगवान् भृगुः ॥ यज्ञघ्नघ्नेन यजुषा दक्षिणाग्नौ जुहोन्मुने ॥ २३ ॥
teSAmApatatAM vegaM nizamya bhagavAn bhRguH ॥ yajJaghnaghnena yajuSA dakSiNAgnau juhonmune ॥ 23 ॥
On seeing the force of their onslaught, O sages, the holy sage Bhṛgu poured offering in the Dakṣiṇa fire with the Yajur mantra to quell the obstructors of sacrifice.

हूयमाने च भृगुणा समुत्पेतुर्महासुराः ॥ ऋभवो नाम प्रबलवीरास्तत्र सहस्रशः ॥ २४ ॥
hUyamAne ca bhRguNA samutpeturmahAsurAH ॥ Rbhavo nAma prabalavIrAstatra sahasrazaH ॥ 24 ॥
While the sage Bhṛgu was pouring the offerings, thousands of powerful demons—Ṛbhus rose up.

तैरलातायुधैस्तत्र प्रमथानां मुनीश्वर ॥ अभूद्युद्धं सुविकटं शृण्वतां रोमहर्षणम्॥ २५ ॥
tairalAtAyudhaistatra pramathAnAM munIzvara ॥ abhUdyuddhaM suvikaTaM zRNvatAM romaharSaNam॥ 25 ॥
O excellent sage, a terrible fight ensued between Śiva’s attendants and the demons who had firebrands for their weapons. Their hair stood on end when people heard the uproar.

ऋभुभिस्तैर्महावीरैर्हन्यमानास्समन्ततः ॥ अयत्नयानाः प्रमथा उशद्भिर्ब्रह्मतेजसा ॥२६॥
RbhubhistairmahAvIrairhanyamAnAssamantataH ॥ ayatnayAnAH pramathA uzadbhirbrahmatejasA ॥26॥
The sensible devas, Viṣṇu and others, became agitated on pondering over the results of Pramathas’ destruction and routing.

एवं शिवगणास्ते वै हता विद्राविता द्रुतम् ॥ शिवेच्छया महाशक्त्या तदद्भुतमिवाऽभवत् ॥२७॥
evaM zivagaNAste vai hatA vidrAvitA drutam ॥ zivecchayA mahAzaktyA tadadbhutamivA'bhavat ॥27॥
It had been the desire of Śiva of the great Śakti that the attendants were killed and routed quickly. It was a wonderful scene.

तद्दृष्ट्वा ऋषयो देवाश्शक्राद्यास्समरुद्गणाः ॥ विश्वेश्विनौ लोकपालास्तूष्णीं भूतास्तदाऽभवन् ॥२८॥
taddRSTvA RSayo devAzzakrAdyAssamarudgaNAH ॥ vizvezvinau lokapAlAstUSNIM bhUtAstadA'bhavan ॥28॥
On seeing this, the sages, Indra and other devas, the Maruts, the Viśvedevas, the Aśvins and the guardians of the quarters kept silent.

केचिद्विष्णुं प्रभुं तत्र प्रार्थयन्तस्समन्ततः ॥ उद्विग्ना मन्त्रयंतश्च विप्राभावं मुहुर्मुहुः॥२९॥
kecidviSNuM prabhuM tatra prArthayantassamantataH ॥ udvignA mantrayaMtazca viprAbhAvaM muhurmuhuH॥29॥
Some of them went to request and consult with Viṣṇu frequently for preventing obstacles. They were greatly agitated.

सुविचार्योदर्कफलं महोद्विग्नास्सुबुद्धयः ॥ सुरविष्ण्वादयोभूवन् तन्नाशाद्रावणान्मुहुः ॥2-2-30-३०॥
suvicAryodarkaphalaM mahodvignAssubuddhayaH ॥ suraviSNvAdayobhUvan tannAzAdrAvaNAnmuhuH ॥2-2-30-30॥
The sensible devas, Viṣṇu and others, became agitated on pondering over the results of Pramathas’ destruction and routing.

एवंभूतस्तदा यज्ञो विघ्नो जातो दुरात्मनः ॥ ब्रह्मबंधोश्च दक्षस्य शंकरद्रोहिणो मुने ॥ ३१ ॥
evaMbhUtastadA yajJo vighno jAto durAtmanaH ॥ brahmabaMdhozca dakSasya zaMkaradrohiNo mune ॥ 31 ॥
Such was the obstacle to the sacrifice of Dakṣa who rivalled with Śiva, who was wicked and who professed to be a kinsman of Brahmā, O sage.
