nArada uvAca ॥ brahman vidhe mahAbhAga zivabhaktavara prabho ॥ zrAvitaM caritaM zaMbhoradbhutaM maMgalAyanam ॥1॥
Nārada said: O lord Brahmā, the fortunate one, foremost of Śiva’s devotees, you have narrated the wonderfully auspicious story of Śiva.

ततः किमभवत्तात कथ्यतां शशिमौलिनः सत्याश्च चरितं दिव्यं सर्वाघौघविनाशनम् ॥ २ ॥
tataH kimabhavattAta kathyatAM zazimaulinaH satyAzca caritaM divyaM sarvAghaughavinAzanam ॥ 2 ॥
O dear one, what happened after that? Please continue to narrate the story of the moon-crested Śiva and Satī, the wonderful story that quells all sins.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ nivRtte zaMkare cAsmadvadhAdbhaktAnukaMpini ॥ abhavannirbhayAssarve sukhinastu prasannakAH ॥ 3 ॥
Brahmā said: When Śiva who is sympathetic towards His devotees, desisted from killing me, all became fearless, happy and pleased.

नतस्कंधास्सांजलयः प्रणेमुर्निखिलाश्च ते ॥ तुष्टुवुश्शंकरं भक्त्या चक्रुर्जयरवं मुदा ॥ ४ ॥
nataskaMdhAssAMjalayaH praNemurnikhilAzca te ॥ tuSTuvuzzaMkaraM bhaktyA cakrurjayaravaM mudA ॥ 4 ॥
All of them bowed with stooping shoulders, and palms joined in reverence. They lauded Śiva with devotion. They shouted cries of victory with pleasure.

tasminneva kAle'haM prasanno nirbhayo mune ॥ astavaM zaMkaraM bhaktyA vividhaizca zubhastavaiH ॥ 5 ॥
At the same time, delighted and fearless, O sage, I eulogised Śiva with devotion by means of auspicious prayers.

tatastuSTamanAzzaMbhurbahulIlAkaraH prabhuH ॥ mune mAM samuvAcedaM sarveSAM zRNvatAM tadA ॥ 6 ॥
O sage, the lord Śiva who was delighted in His mind and who is an adept in many a divine sport spoke to me within the hearing of all.

॥ rudra uvAca ॥ brahman tAta prasannohaM nirbhayastvaM bhavAdhunA ॥ svazIrSaM spRza hastena madAjJAM kurvasaMzayam ॥ 7 ॥
Rudra said: Dear Brahmā, I am glad. You can be free from fear. You touch your head with your hand. Unhesitatingly carry out my behest.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य वचश्शम्भोर्बहुलीलाकृतः प्रभोः ॥ स्पृशन् स्वं कं तथा भूत्वा प्राणमं वृषभध्वजम् ॥ ८ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacazzambhorbahulIlAkRtaH prabhoH ॥ spRzan svaM kaM tathA bhUtvA prANamaM vRSabhadhvajam ॥ 8 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words of Lord Śiva adept in divine sports I touched my head and in the same manner bowed to Śiva.

yAvadevamahaM svaM kaM spRzAmi nijapANinA ॥ tAvattatra sthitaM sadyastadrUpavRSavAhanam ॥ 9 ॥
When I thus touched my head I assumed the shape of his vehicle, the bull.

tato lajjAparItAMgassthitazcAhamadhomukhaH ॥ indrAdyairamaraissarvaissudRSTassarvatassthitaiH ॥2-2-20-10॥
Then I was too much ashamed. I stood with my head bent down. Indra and other devas standing around saw me in that plight.

अथाहं लज्जयाविष्टः प्रणिपत्य महेश्वरम् ॥ प्रवोचं संस्तुतिं कृत्वा क्षम्यतां क्षम्यतामिति ॥११॥
athAhaM lajjayAviSTaH praNipatya mahezvaram ॥ pravocaM saMstutiM kRtvA kSamyatAM kSamyatAmiti ॥11॥
Ashamed that I was, I repeatedly bowed to Him and after offering prayers spoke to Him again: “I may be excused. I may be excused.”

अस्य पापस्य शुध्यर्थं प्रायश्चित्तं वद प्रभो॥ निग्रहं च तथान्यायं येन पापं प्रयातु मे ॥१२॥
asya pApasya zudhyarthaM prAyazcittaM vada prabho॥ nigrahaM ca tathAnyAyaM yena pApaM prayAtu me ॥12॥
O lord, tell me the mode of atonement for my sin. Even killing is justifiable. May my sin be removed thereby.

इत्युक्तस्तु मया शंभुरुवाच प्रणतं हि तम् ॥ सुप्रसन्नतरो भूत्वा सर्वेशो भक्तवत्सलः ॥ १३ ॥
ityuktastu mayA zaMbhuruvAca praNataM hi tam ॥ suprasannataro bhUtvA sarvezo bhaktavatsalaH ॥ 13 ॥
Thus addressed by me, Śiva, the lord of all, who is favourable, delightedly told me as I stood bowing to Him.

शंभुरुवाच ॥ अनेनैव स्वरूपेण मदधिष्ठितकेन हि ॥ तपः कुरु प्रसन्नात्मा मदाराधनतत्परः॥ १४ ॥
zaMbhuruvAca ॥ anenaiva svarUpeNa madadhiSThitakena hi ॥ tapaH kuru prasannAtmA madArAdhanatatparaH॥ 14 ॥
Śiva said: In this very form (of a bull) whereon I sit, you shall perform penance with pleasure in your heart and desire for propitiating me.

ख्यातिं यास्यसि सर्वत्र नाम्ना रुद्रशिरः क्षितौ॥ साधकः सर्वकृत्यानां तेजोभाजां द्विजन्मनाम् ॥१५॥
khyAtiM yAsyasi sarvatra nAmnA rudraziraH kSitau॥ sAdhakaH sarvakRtyAnAM tejobhAjAM dvijanmanAm ॥15॥
You will acquire the glory of being called “The head of Rudra” in the world. You will be the accomplisher of rites for brahmins of great repute.

मनुष्याणामिदं कृत्यं यस्माद्वीर्य्यं त्वयाऽधुना ॥ तस्मात्त्वं मानुषो भूत्वा विचरिष्यसि भूतले ॥१६॥
manuSyANAmidaM kRtyaM yasmAdvIryyaM tvayA'dhunA ॥ tasmAttvaM mAnuSo bhUtvA vicariSyasi bhUtale ॥16॥
Discharge of semen is the act of human beings and as you have done the same, you will be born as a man and be roaming over the earth.

यस्त्वां चानेन रूपेण दृष्ट्वा कौ विचरिष्यति ॥ किमेतद्ब्रह्मणो मूर्ध्नि वदन्निति पुरान्तकः ॥१७॥
yastvAM cAnena rUpeNa dRSTvA kau vicariSyati ॥ kimetadbrahmaNo mUrdhni vadanniti purAntakaH ॥17॥
Who, having seen you in this form, would dare to behave arrogantly? What is this being spoken on the head of Brahmā?" said Purāntaka (Shiva).

ततस्ते चेष्टितं सर्वं कौतुकाच्छ्रोष्यतीति यः ॥ परदारकृतात्त्यागान्मुक्तिं सद्यस्स यास्यति ॥ १८ ॥
tataste ceSTitaM sarvaM kautukAcchroSyatIti yaH ॥ paradArakRtAttyAgAnmuktiM sadyassa yAsyati ॥ 18 ॥
Any body who has committed the sin of outraging the modesty of another man’s wife will be free from that sin if he eagerly hears your story.

यथा यथा जनश्चैतत्कृत्यन्ते कीर्तयिष्यति ॥ तथा तथा विशुद्धिस्ते पापस्यास्य भविष्यति ॥१९॥
yathA yathA janazcaitatkRtyante kIrtayiSyati ॥ tathA tathA vizuddhiste pApasyAsya bhaviSyati ॥19॥
Whenever people thus repeat your wicked action your sin will gradually subside and you will become pure.

एतदेव हि ते ब्रह्मन् प्रायश्चित्तं मयेरितम् ॥ जनहास्यकरं लोके तव गर्हाकरं परम् ॥2-2-20-२०॥
etadeva hi te brahman prAyazcittaM mayeritam ॥ janahAsyakaraM loke tava garhAkaraM param ॥2-2-20-20॥
O Brahmā, this is the atonement I lay down for you, being laughed at by the people and ridiculed by them.

एतच्च तव वीर्य्यं हि पतितं वेदिमध्यगम् ॥ कामार्तस्य मया दृष्टं नैतद्धार्यं भविष्यति ॥ २१ ॥
etacca tava vIryyaM hi patitaM vedimadhyagam ॥ kAmArtasya mayA dRSTaM naitaddhAryaM bhaviSyati ॥ 21 ॥
The semen drops that fell in the middle of the altar-ground from you when you were excited by lust and seen by me will not be retained by any one.

चतुर्बिन्दुमितं रेतः पतितं यत्क्षितौ तव ॥ तन्मितास्तोयदा व्योम्नि भवेयुः प्रलयंकराः ॥ २२ ॥
caturbindumitaM retaH patitaM yatkSitau tava ॥ tanmitAstoyadA vyomni bhaveyuH pralayaMkarAH ॥ 22 ॥
Four drops of your semen fell on the ground. Hence so many terrible clouds causing dissolution shall rise up in the sky.

एतस्मिन्नंतरे तत्र देवर्षीणां पुरो द्रुतम् ॥ तद्रेतसस्समभवंस्तन्मिताश्च बलाहका ॥ २३ ॥
etasminnaMtare tatra devarSINAM puro drutam ॥ tadretasassamabhavaMstanmitAzca balAhakA ॥ 23 ॥
In the meantime, (when Śiva said so) in front of the devas and the sages, so many clouds emanated from the semen drops.

संवर्तकस्तथावर्त्तः पुष्करो द्रोण एव च ॥ एते चतुर्विधास्तात महामेघा लयंकराः ॥ २४ ॥
saMvartakastathAvarttaH puSkaro droNa eva ca ॥ ete caturvidhAstAta mahAmeghA layaMkarAH ॥ 24 ॥
O dear one, four types of great clouds that caused destruction are the Saṃvartaka, the Āvarta, the Puṣkara and the Droṇa.

गर्जंतश्चाथ मुचंतस्तोयानीषच्छिवेच्छया ॥ फेलुर्व्योम्नि मुनिश्रेष्ठ तोयदास्ते कदारवाः ॥ २५ ॥
garjaMtazcAtha mucaMtastoyAnISacchivecchayA ॥ phelurvyomni munizreSTha toyadAste kadAravAH ॥ 25 ॥
O excellent sage, those clouds rumbling and roaring with hideous sounds dropping showers at the slightest wish of Śiva burst asunder in the sky.

तैस्तु संछादिते व्योम्नि सुगर्जद्भिश्च शंकरः॥ प्रशान्दाक्षायणी देवी भृशं शांतोऽभवद्द्रुतम् ॥२६॥
taistu saMchAdite vyomni sugarjadbhizca zaMkaraH॥ prazAndAkSAyaNI devI bhRzaM zAMto'bhavaddrutam ॥26॥
When the sky was covered by those roaring clouds, Śiva and the Goddess Śivā were quite calm.

अथ चाहं वीतभयश्शंकरस्या ज्ञया तदा ॥ शेषं वैवाहिकं कर्म समाप्तिमनयं मुने ॥ २७ ॥
atha cAhaM vItabhayazzaMkarasyA jJayA tadA ॥ zeSaM vaivAhikaM karma samAptimanayaM mune ॥ 27 ॥
O sage, thereafter becoming fearless, I concluded the remaining rites of the marriage at the bidding of Śiva.

पपात पुष्पवृष्टिश्च शिवाशिवशिरस्कयोः ॥ सर्वत्र च मुनिश्रेष्ठ मुदा देवगणोज्झिता ॥२८॥
papAta puSpavRSTizca zivAzivaziraskayoH ॥ sarvatra ca munizreSTha mudA devagaNojjhitA ॥28॥
O excellent sage, a shower of flowers dropped by the devas with great pleasure fell on the heads of Śivā and Śiva and also on all their sides.

वाद्यमानेषु वाद्येषु गायमानेषु तेषु च ॥ पठत्सु विप्रवर्येषु वादान् भक्त्यान्वितेषु च ॥२९॥
vAdyamAneSu vAdyeSu gAyamAneSu teSu ca ॥ paThatsu vipravaryeSu vAdAn bhaktyAnviteSu ca ॥29॥
O Nārada, great festivities were conducted by the wives of the devas. Musical instruments were played, songs were sung, Vedic hymns were recited devoutly by groups of brahmins.

रंभादिषु पुरंध्रीषु नृत्यमानासु सादरम् ॥ महोत्सवो महानासीद्देवपत्नीषु नारद ॥ 2-2-20-३० ॥
raMbhAdiSu puraMdhrISu nRtyamAnAsu sAdaram ॥ mahotsavo mahAnAsIddevapatnISu nArada ॥ 2-2-20-30 ॥
O Nārada, when celestial damsels like Rambhā and others were dancing gracefully, a grand festival was celebrated among the wives of the gods.

अथ कर्मवितानेशः प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः ॥ प्राह मां प्रांजलिं प्रीत्या लौकिकीं गतिमाश्रितः ॥ ३१ ॥
atha karmavitAnezaH prasannaH paramezvaraH ॥ prAha mAM prAMjaliM prItyA laukikIM gatimAzritaH ॥ 31 ॥
Then the delightful lord, the lord of sacrificial rites, following the conventions of the world, spoke to me as I was standing with palms joined in reverence.

ईश्वर उवाच ॥ हे ब्रह्मन् सुकृतं कर्म सर्वं वैवाहिकं च यत् ॥ प्रसन्नोस्मि त्वमाचार्यो दद्यां ते दक्षिणां च काम् ॥ ३२ ॥
Izvara uvAca ॥ he brahman sukRtaM karma sarvaM vaivAhikaM ca yat ॥ prasannosmi tvamAcAryo dadyAM te dakSiNAM ca kAm ॥ 32 ॥
Śiva said: O Brahmā, all the rites of marriage have been performed extremely well. I am pleased. You officiated as the priest. What shall I give you as the nuptial fee?

याचस्व तां सुरज्येष्ठ यद्यपि स्यात्सुदुर्लभा ॥ ब्रूहि शीघ्रं महाभाग नादेयं विद्यते मम ॥ ३३ ॥
yAcasva tAM surajyeSTha yadyapi syAtsudurlabhA ॥ brUhi zIghraM mahAbhAga nAdeyaM vidyate mama ॥ 33 ॥
O eldest of devas, you can demand it even if it be hard to get. Tell me quickly, O fortunate one. For there is nothing which cannot be granted by me.

॥ brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacassohaM zaMkarasya kRtAMjaliH ॥ mune'vocaM vinItAtmA praNamyezaM muhurmuhuH ॥ 34 ॥
Brahmā said: O sage, on hearing these words of Śiva I humbly bowed to Him repeatedly with palms joined in reverence and said:

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ यदि प्रसन्नो देवेश वरयोग्योस्म्यहं यदि ॥ तत्कुरु त्वं महेशान सुप्रीत्या यद्वदाम्यहम् ॥३५॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ yadi prasanno deveza varayogyosmyahaM yadi ॥ tatkuru tvaM mahezAna suprItyA yadvadAmyaham ॥35॥
Brahmā said: O lord of Devas, if you are pleased, if I deserve your blessings, O lord, please do as I request you with pleasure.

अनेनैव तु रूपेण वेद्यामस्यां महेश्वर ॥ त्वया स्थेयं सदैवात्र नृणां पापविशुद्धये ॥ ३६ ॥
anenaiva tu rUpeNa vedyAmasyAM mahezvara ॥ tvayA stheyaM sadaivAtra nRNAM pApavizuddhaye ॥ 36 ॥
O lord Śiva, for the purification of men from sins you will please stay for ever in this altar in this self-same form.

येनास्य संनिधौ कृत्वा स्वाश्रमं शशि शेखर ॥ तपः कुर्या विनाशाय स्वपापस्यास्य शंकर ॥ ३७ ॥
yenAsya saMnidhau kRtvA svAzramaM zazi zekhara ॥ tapaH kuryA vinAzAya svapApasyAsya zaMkara ॥ 37 ॥
O moon-crested God, I shall make my hermitage in its vicinity and perform penance to destroy my sin.

चैत्रशुक्लत्रयोदश्यां नक्षत्रे भगदैवते ॥ सूर्यवारे च यो भक्त्या वीक्षेत भुवि मानवः ॥ ३८ ॥
caitrazuklatrayodazyAM nakSatre bhagadaivate ॥ sUryavAre ca yo bhaktyA vIkSeta bhuvi mAnavaH ॥ 38 ॥
On the thirteenth day of the bright half of the month of Chaitra, when the auspicious constellation 'Bhaga' is present, and it falls on a Sunday — whoever beholds (this holy occasion) with devotion on earth.

तदैव तस्य पापानि प्रयांतु हर संक्षयम् ॥ वर्द्धते विपुलं पुण्यं रोगा नश्यंतु सर्वशः ॥३९॥
tadaiva tasya pApAni prayAMtu hara saMkSayam ॥ varddhate vipulaM puNyaM rogA nazyaMtu sarvazaH ॥39॥
At that very moment, may all his sins be destroyed by Lord Hara (Shiva). His merit increases abundantly, and all diseases are completely eliminated.

या नारी दुर्भगा वंध्या काणा रूपविवर्जिता ॥ सापि त्वद्दर्शनादेव निर्दोषा संभवेद्ध्रुवम् ॥ 2-2-20-४० ॥

If a woman who is barren, one-eyed, ugly or unfortunate, visits this place she shall be freed from all these defects.

Taking leave of Dakṣa, Śiva, the great lord, desired to depart along with his wife Satī. He was so fond of His own men.

In the meantime, the intelligent Dakṣa bowed humbly with palms joined in reverence and eulogised Śiva with devotion.

With the joyous consent of Dakṣa, Śiva seated Satī on the bull and then sitting Himself on it went to the Himālayan ridges.

Seated on the bull along with Śiva, the sweet smiling Satī of fine teeth shone like a black cloud near the moon.

Viṣṇu and other devas, Marīci and other sages, Dakṣa and the other people were all in a state of pleasant steady senselessness.

Some played on musical instruments, others sang sweetly the lustrous glory of Śiva. They all followed Śiva joyously.

Half the way Śiva took leave of Dakṣa with pleasure. Along with his followers Dakṣa returned to his abode thrilled by Śiva’s love.

Taking leave of Śiva eulogising and bowing to Him, Viṣṇu, as also the Gods and sages with joyful beaming faces returned to their respective abodes.

He who listens to this narrative without distraction, at the time of marriage, during a sacrifice, or at its commencement, after worshiping Vṛṣabhadhvaja (Lord Shiva), ॥ will gain great merit or blessing॥.

All his actions, especially those related to marriage, shall be free of obstacles. Any other auspicious deed too shall always proceed without hindrance.

kanyA ca sukhasaubhaNyazIlAcAraguNAnvitA॥ sAdhvI syAtputriNI prItyA zrutvAkhyAnamidaM zubham ॥61॥
The bride will be blessed with happiness, good fortune, good conduct, and good qualities. She will be chaste and produce sons on hearing this auspicious narration.
