Brahmā said: In the mean time, O celestial sage I, the grandfather of the worlds, came there, on hearing the incident.

I consoled Dakṣa as before. Clever that I was I made him friendly with you.

O best of sages, I consoled you—my own son, beloved of the Devas, and taking you with love effected conciliation.

Then Dakṣa, consoled by me, begot of his wife sixty comely daughters.

Without any lassitude he performed their marriages with Dharma and others. O excellent sage, listen to that with pleasure.

dadau daza sutA dakSo dharmAya vidhivanmune ॥ trayodaza kazyapAya munaye trinaveMdave ॥ 6 ॥
Dakṣa gave ten of his daughters duly in marriage to Dharma, thirteen to Kaśyapa the sage, and twenty seven to the moon.

bhUtAMgiraH kRzAzvebhyo dvedve putrI pradattavAn ॥ tArkSyAya cAparaH kanyA prasUtiprasavairyataH ॥7॥
Bhūtāṅgira gave two daughters each to Kṛśāśva and Bhūtāṅgiri, and another daughter to Tārkṣya, from whom were born various beings.

त्रिलोकाः पूरितास्तन्नो वर्ण्यते व्यासतो भयात् ॥ ८ ॥
trilokAH pUritAstanno varNyate vyAsato bhayAt ॥ 8 ॥
The sons and grandsons and descendants of these filled the three worlds. A detailed narration is not attempted here.

केचिद्वदंति तां ज्येष्ठां मध्यमां चापरे शिवाम् ॥ सर्वानन्तरजां केचित्कल्पभेदात्त्रयं च सत ॥९॥
kecidvadaMti tAM jyeSThAM madhyamAM cApare zivAm ॥ sarvAnantarajAM kecitkalpabhedAttrayaM ca sata ॥9॥
Some say that Śivā was the eldest of his daughters, some say that she was the middle and some say that she was the youngest. All the three opinions are correct in different Kalpas.

anaMtaraM sutotpatteH sapatnIkaH prajApatiH ॥ dakSo dadhau suprItmA tAM manasA jagadambikAm ॥2-2-14-10॥
After the birth of his daughter, Dakṣa Prajāpati and his wife meditated on the mother of the universe with pleasure.

अतः प्रेम्णा च तुष्टाव गिरा गद्गदया हि सः ॥ भूयोभूयो नमस्कृत्य सांजलिर्विनयान्वितः ॥ ११ ॥
ataH premNA ca tuSTAva girA gadgadayA hi saH ॥ bhUyobhUyo namaskRtya sAMjalirvinayAnvitaH ॥ 11 ॥
Then he lovingly eulogised her with words choked at the throat and repeatedly paid respects to her humbly joining the palms in reverence.

सन्तुष्टा सा तदा देवी विचारं मनसीति च ॥ चक्रेऽवतारं वीरिण्यां कुर्यां पणविपूर्तये ॥ १२ ॥
santuSTA sA tadA devI vicAraM manasIti ca ॥ cakre'vatAraM vIriNyAM kuryAM paNavipUrtaye ॥ 12 ॥
The Goddess, who was highly delighted, thought within himself. “I shall incarnate in Vīriṇī in order to keep my word”.

atha sovAsa manasi dakSasya jagadambikA ॥ vilalAsa tadAtIva sa dakSo munisattama ॥ 13 ॥
O excellent sage, then the mother of the universe spoke to Dakṣa in mind. Then Dakṣa shone forth splendidly.

sumuhUrtenAtha dakSo'pi svapatnyAM nidadhe mudA ॥ dakSapatnyAstadA citte zivovAsa dayAnvitA ॥ 14 ॥
In an auspicious hour he deposited his semen in his wife. Thus full of compassion, Śivā began to reside in the womb of Dakṣa’s consort.

All the characteristic signs of pregnancy appeared in her.

Dear one, thanks to the power of the presence of Śivā, Vīriṇī had an auspicious appearance and shone all the more with mental pleasure.

kulasya saMpadazcaiva zrutezcittasamunnateH ॥ vyadhatta sukriyA dakSaH prItyA puMsavanAdikAH ॥ 17 ॥
As befitting the loftiness of his mind, customs and manners current in his family and the injunctions of the Vedas, Dakṣa performed the rites of Puṃsavana॥ 1॥ etc. out of affection.

उत्सवोतीव संजातस्तदा तेषु च कर्मसु ॥ वित्तं ददौ द्विजातिभ्यो यथाकामं प्रजापतिः ॥ १८ ॥
utsavotIva saMjAtastadA teSu ca karmasu ॥ vittaM dadau dvijAtibhyo yathAkAmaM prajApatiH ॥ 18 ॥
Great festivities accompanied those rites. Dakṣa presented liberal sums of money to the brahmins.

atha tasminnavasare sarve haryAdayassurAH ॥ jJAtvA garbhagatAM devIM vIriNyAste mudaM yayuH ॥19॥
On coming to know that the Goddess had come to the womb of Vīriṇī, Viṣṇu and other Devas became very gay.

तत्रागत्य च सर्वे ते तुष्टुवुर्जगदम्बिकाम् ॥ लोकोपकारकरिणीं प्रणम्य च मुहुर्मुहुः ॥2-2-14-२०॥
tatrAgatya ca sarve te tuSTuvurjagadambikAm ॥ lokopakArakariNIM praNamya ca muhurmuhuH ॥2-2-14-20॥
They all approached her and paid frequent respects to the benefactress of the worlds, eulogising the mother of the universe.

kRtvA tataste bahudhA prazaMsAM hRSTamAnasAH ॥ dakSaprajApatezcaiva vIriNyAssvagRhaM yayuH ॥21॥
Delighted in their hearts they praised Dakṣa and Vīriṇī in various ways and went to their respective abodes.

गतेषु नवमासेषु कारयित्वा च लौकिकीम् ॥ गतिं शिवा च पूर्णे सा दशमे मासि नारद ॥ २२ ॥
gateSu navamAseSu kArayitvA ca laukikIm ॥ gatiM zivA ca pUrNe sA dazame mAsi nArada ॥ 22 ॥
When nine months had passed and she had gone through the usual worldly (pregnancy-related) process, then, O Nārada, in the tenth month, Śivā (the divine mother) gave birth.

AvirbabhUva purato mAtussadyastadA mune॥ muhUrte sukhade candragrahatArAnukUlake ॥ 23 ॥
At that moment, O Sage, the child suddenly appeared before his mother, in an auspicious muhurta (time), favorable with respect to the moon, planets, and stars.

tasyAM tu jAtamAtrAyAM suprIto'sau prajApatiH ॥ saiva devIti tAM mene dRSTvA tAM tejasolbaNAm ॥ 24 ॥
As soon as she was born, Dakṣa was highly pleased. On seeing her extremely brilliant he was convinced that she was the Goddess Śivā herself.

tadAbhUtpuSpasadvRSTirmeghAzca vavRSurjalam ॥ dizazzAMtA drutaM tasyAM jAtAyAM ca munIzvara ॥ 25 ॥
. O excellent sage, when she was born there was a gentle shower from the clouds accompanied by that of flowers. The quarters became tranquil immediately.

The devas gathered in the sky and played on musical instruments; sacrificial fires kindled calmly; everything indicated auspiciousness.

vIriNosaMbhavAM dRSTvA dakSastAM jagadambikAm ॥ namaskRtya karau baddhvA bahu tuSTAva bhaktitaH ॥ 27 ॥
On seeing the mother of the universe born of Vīriṇī, Dakṣa joined his palms in reverence, paid respects to her and eulogised her.

dakSa uvAca ॥ mahezAni namastubhyaM jagadambe sanAtani ॥ kRpAM kuru mahAdevi satye satyasvarUpiNi ॥28॥
Dakṣa said: O Goddess, the eternal mother of the universe, obeisance to Thee. O great Goddess, the Truthful and truth-featured, be pleased.

I bow to Thee, the bestower of benefits, Thee who art auspicious, calm, great illusion, mystic slumber and identical with the universe.

I bow to Thee, the great mother of the universe, the great Goddess, by whom formerly Brahmā had been directed to create the worlds which he carried out.

yayA viSNurjagatsthityai niyuktastAM sadAkarot ॥ tAM tvAM namAmi paramAM jagaddhAtrIM mahezvarIm ॥31॥
I bow to Thee, great support of the universe, the great Goddess, by whom formerly Viṣṇu had been directed to sustain the universe which he has been doing always.

yayA rudro jagannAze niyuktastAM sadAkarot॥ tAM tvAM namAmi paramAM jagaddhAtrIM mahezvarIm ॥32॥
I bow to Thee the great mother of the universe, the great Goddess, by whom formerly Rudra had been directed to annihilate the universe which he has been doing always.

रजस्सत्त्वतमोरूपां सर्वकार्यकरीं सदा ॥ त्रिदेवजननीं देवीं त्वां नमामि च तां शिवाम् ॥३३॥
rajassattvatamorUpAM sarvakAryakarIM sadA ॥ tridevajananIM devIM tvAM namAmi ca tAM zivAm ॥33॥
I bow to Thee, Śivā, of Rājasika Sāttvika, and Tāmasika forms, performing every thing always, and the Goddess mother of the three deities.

यस्त्वां विचिंतयेद्देवीं विद्याविद्यात्मिकां पराम् ॥ तस्य भुक्तिश्च मुक्तिश्च सदा करतले स्थिता॥३४॥।
yastvAM viciMtayeddevIM vidyAvidyAtmikAM parAm ॥ tasya bhuktizca muktizca sadA karatale sthitA॥34॥।
O Goddess, enjoyment of worldly pleasures and salvation are always within the reach of that person who meditates on thee in the form of Vidyā and Avidyā, every day.

यस्त्वां प्रत्यक्षतो देवि शिवां पश्यति पावनीम् ॥ तस्यावश्यं भवेन्मुक्तिर्विद्याविद्याप्रकाशिका ॥ ३५ ॥।
yastvAM pratyakSato devi zivAM pazyati pAvanIm ॥ tasyAvazyaM bhavenmuktirvidyAvidyAprakAzikA ॥ 35 ॥।
O Goddess, he who directly perceives Thee, the sanctifying deity, will certainly attain salvation with the discrimination of Vidyā and Avidyā.

ये स्तुवंति जगन्मातर्भवानीमंबिकेति च ॥ जगन्मयीति दुर्गेति सर्वं तेषां भविष्यति ॥ ३६ ॥
ye stuvaMti jaganmAtarbhavAnImaMbiketi ca ॥ jaganmayIti durgeti sarvaM teSAM bhaviSyati ॥ 36 ॥
O mother of the universe, those who eulogise Thee with the names of Bhavānī, Ambikā, Jaganmāyā and Durgā will have everything.

brahmovAca ॥ iti stutA jaganmAtA zivA dakSeNa dhImatA ॥ tathovAca tadA dakSaM yathA mAtA zRNoti na ॥ 37 ॥
Brahmā said: Śivā, the mother of the universe, eulogised by Dakṣa the intelligent, said to Dakṣa without making it heard by her mother.

sarvaM mumoha tathyaM ca tathA dakSaH zRNotu tat ॥ nAnyastathA zivA prAha nAnotiH paramezvarI ॥ 38 ॥
Śivā, the great Goddess and the source of future creation, made everyone deluded and said in such a manner that Dakṣa heard the truth and not anyone else.

devyuvAca ॥ ahamArAdhitA pUrvaM sutArthaM te prajApate ॥ IpsitaM tava siddhaM tu tapo dhAraya saMprati ॥ 39 ॥
The goddess said: O Prajāpati, I had been propitiated formerly for becoming your daughter. Your wish has been fulfilled now. You can carry on your activities of penance.

Brahmā said: Having spoken thus to Dakṣa, the Goddess assumed infancy through her illusory power and began to cry near her mother.

अथ तद्रोदनं श्रुत्वा स्त्रियो वाक्यं ससंभ्रमाः॥ आगतास्तत्र सुप्रीत्या दास्योपि च ससंभ्रमाः ॥ ४१ ॥
atha tadrodanaM zrutvA striyo vAkyaM sasaMbhramAH॥ AgatAstatra suprItyA dAsyopi ca sasaMbhramAH ॥ 41 ॥
On heaving the cry, the woman spoke in agitation. The servant-maids too became pleasantly agitated.

दृष्ट्वासिक्नीसुतारूपं ननन्दुस्सर्वयोषितः ॥ सर्वे पौरजनाश्चापि चक्रुर्जयरवं तदा ॥ ४२ ॥
dRSTvAsiknIsutArUpaM nanandussarvayoSitaH ॥ sarve paurajanAzcApi cakrurjayaravaM tadA ॥ 42 ॥
On seeing the comely form of Asiknī’s daughter, the women rejoiced. The citizens raised shouts of Victory then.

utsavazca mahAnAsIdgAnavAdyapurassaram ॥ dakSosiknI mudaM lebhe zubhaM dRSTvA sutAnanam ॥ 43 ॥
There were great festivities with songs and musical instruments. On seeing the unearthly face of their daughter the pleasure of Dakṣa and Asiknī knew no bounds.

दक्षः श्रुतिकुलाचारं चक्रे च विधिवत्तदा ॥ दानं ददौ द्विजातिभ्योन्येभ्यश्च द्रविणं तथा ॥ ४४ ॥
dakSaH zrutikulAcAraM cakre ca vidhivattadA ॥ dAnaM dadau dvijAtibhyonyebhyazca draviNaM tathA ॥ 44 ॥
Dakṣa duly performed all the conventional ceremonies and the rites of the Vedas. He gave various gifts to the brahmins and money to others.

बभूव सर्वतो गानं नर्तनं च यथोचितम् ॥ नेदुर्वाद्यानि बहुशस्सुमंगलपुरस्सरम् ॥ ४५ ॥
babhUva sarvato gAnaM nartanaM ca yathocitam ॥ nedurvAdyAni bahuzassumaMgalapurassaram ॥ 45 ॥
Songs and dances were performed everywhere in a befitting manner. Musical instruments played auspicious songs repeatedly.

atha haryAdayo devAssarve sAnucarAstadA ॥ munivRndaiH samAgatyotsavaM cakruryathAvidhi ॥46॥
Hari and other Gods came with their attendants, along with the sages and joined the festivities.

dRSTvA dakSasutAmaMbAM jagataH paramezvarIm ॥ nemuH savinayAssarve tuSTuvuzca zubhaistavaiH ॥ 47 ॥
On seeing the daughter of Dakṣa, the Goddess mother of the universe, they bowed and eulogised her with auspicious hymns.

ऊचुस्सर्वे प्रमुदिता गिरं जयजयात्मिकाम् ॥ प्रशशंसुर्मुदा दक्षं वीरिणीं च विशेषतः ॥ ४८ ॥
Ucussarve pramuditA giraM jayajayAtmikAm ॥ prazazaMsurmudA dakSaM vIriNIM ca vizeSataH ॥ 48 ॥
In their great delight they shouted cries of victory. They praised Dakṣa and Vīriṇī in particular.

तदोमेति नाम चक्रे तस्या दक्षस्तदाज्ञया ॥ प्रशस्तायास्सर्वगुणसत्त्वादपि मुदान्वितः ॥ ४९ ॥
tadometi nAma cakre tasyA dakSastadAjJayA ॥ prazastAyAssarvaguNasattvAdapi mudAnvitaH ॥ 49 ॥
Then at their bidding, the delighted Dakṣa named her Umā॥ 3॥ since she inherited good qualities and was greatly admired.

नामान्यन्यानि तस्यास्तु पश्चाज्जातानि लोकतः ॥ महामंगलदान्येव दुःखघ्नानि विशेषतः ॥ 2-2-14-५० ॥
nAmAnyanyAni tasyAstu pazcAjjAtAni lokataH ॥ mahAmaMgaladAnyeva duHkhaghnAni vizeSataH ॥ 2-2-14-50 ॥
Her other names in the world were assigned afterwards. They are auspicious and quell miseries in particular.

दक्षस्तदा हरिं नत्वा मां सर्वानमरानपि ॥ मुनीनपि करौ बद्ध्वा स्तुत्वा चानर्च भक्तितः ॥ ५१ ॥
dakSastadA hariM natvA mAM sarvAnamarAnapi ॥ munInapi karau baddhvA stutvA cAnarca bhaktitaH ॥ 51 ॥
With palms joined in reverence Dakṣa bowed to Hari, me, devas and sages. He eulogised and worshipped all.

अथ विष्ण्वादयस्सर्वे सुप्रशस्याजनंदनम् ॥ प्रीत्या ययुस्वधामानि संस्मरन् सशिवं शिवम् ॥ ५२ ॥
atha viSNvAdayassarve suprazasyAjanaMdanam ॥ prItyA yayusvadhAmAni saMsmaran sazivaM zivam ॥ 52 ॥
Then Viṣṇu and others praised Dakṣa and in joyous mood returned to their respective abodes remembering Śiva accompanied by Śivā.

अतस्तां च सुतां माता सुसंस्कृत्य यथोचितम् ॥ शिशुपानेन विधिना तस्यै स्तन्यादिकं ददौ ॥ ५३ ॥
atastAM ca sutAM mAtA susaMskRtya yathocitam ॥ zizupAnena vidhinA tasyai stanyAdikaM dadau ॥ 53 ॥
Consecrating the daughter in a befitting manner, the mother fed her with fresh milk in the usual manner of feeding infants.

पालिता साथ वीरिण्या दक्षेण च महात्मना ॥ ववृधे शुक्लपक्षस्य यथा शशिकलान्वहम् ॥ ५४ ॥
pAlitA sAtha vIriNyA dakSeNa ca mahAtmanA ॥ vavRdhe zuklapakSasya yathA zazikalAnvaham ॥ 54 ॥
Duly nurtured by Vīriṇī and the noble-souled Dakṣa, she flourished every day like the digit of the moon in the bright half of a month.

तस्यां तु सद्गुणास्सर्वे विविशुर्द्विजसत्तम ॥ शैशवेपि यथा चन्द्रे कलास्सर्वा मनोहराः ॥ ५५ ॥
tasyAM tu sadguNAssarve vivizurdvijasattama ॥ zaizavepi yathA candre kalAssarvA manoharAH ॥ 55 ॥
O excellent brahmin, even in her infancy, the good qualities entered her like all the beautiful digits entering the moon.

आचरन्निजभावेन सखीमध्यगता यदा ॥ तदा लिलेख भर्गस्य प्रतिमामन्वहं मुहुः ॥ ५६ ॥
AcarannijabhAvena sakhImadhyagatA yadA ॥ tadA lilekha bhargasya pratimAmanvahaM muhuH ॥ 56 ॥
While she was engaged in various sports in the midst of her girl friends, she used to draw pictures of Śiva everyday.

यदा जगौ सुगीतानि शिवा बाल्योचितानि सा ॥ तदा स्थाणुं हरं रुद्रं सस्मार स्मरशासनम् ॥ ५७ ॥
yadA jagau sugItAni zivA bAlyocitAni sA ॥ tadA sthANuM haraM rudraM sasmAra smarazAsanam ॥ 57 ॥
Whenever she sang sweet songs as is usual in childhood, she remembered Sthāṇu, Rudra, the suppressor of Kāma.

ववृधेतीव दंपत्योः प्रत्यहं करुणातुला ॥ तस्या बाल्येपि भक्तायास्तयोर्नित्यं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ ५८ ॥
vavRdhetIva daMpatyoH pratyahaM karuNAtulA ॥ tasyA bAlyepi bhaktAyAstayornityaM muhurmuhuH ॥ 58 ॥
The Couple (Dakṣa and his wife) found her unrivalled mercy increase, even as she had been a great devotee in childhood itself.

सर्वबालागुणा क्रांतां सदा स्वालयकारिणीम्॥ तोषयामास पितरौ नित्यंनित्यं मुहुर्मुहुः॥५९॥
sarvabAlAguNA krAMtAM sadA svAlayakAriNIm॥ toSayAmAsa pitarau nityaMnityaM muhurmuhuH॥59॥
Endowed with qualities of childhood and making her own residence flourish she delighted her parents for ever.
