nArada uvAca ॥ brahmanvidhe mahA prAjJa vada no vadatAM vara ॥ dakSe gRhaM gate prItyA kimabhUttadanaMtaram ॥ 1 ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā of great intelligence, O eloquent one, please tell us what happened after Dakṣa went home with great delight?

brahmovAca ॥ dakSaH prajApatirgatvA svAzramaM hRSTamAnasaH ॥ sargaM cakAra bahudhA mAnasaM mama cAjJayA ॥ 2 ॥
Brahmā said: Dakṣa Prajāpati returned with pleasure to his hermitage and began mental creations at my bidding.

tamabRMhitamAlokya prajAsargaM prajApatiH ॥ dakSo nivedayAmAsa brahmaNe janakAya me ॥ 3 ॥
On seeing the creation, not increasing in size, Dakṣa Prajāpati informed me his father, Brahmā.

दक्ष उवाच ॥ ब्रह्मंस्तात प्रजानाथ वर्द्धन्ते न प्रजाः प्रभो ॥ मया विरचितास्सर्वास्तावत्यो हि स्थिताः खलु ॥ ४ ॥
dakSa uvAca ॥ brahmaMstAta prajAnAtha varddhante na prajAH prabho ॥ mayA viracitAssarvAstAvatyo hi sthitAH khalu ॥ 4 ॥
Dakṣa said: O Brahmā, lord of subjects, these subjects are not flourishing. They are conceived by me but they remain stationary.

kiM karomi prajAnAtha varddheyuH kathamAtmanA ॥ tadupAyaM samAcakSva prajAH kuryAM na saMzayaH ॥ 5 ॥
O lord of subjects what shall I do? How can they flourish themselves? Please instruct me in the means thereof. I shall certainly create subjects.

brahmovAca ॥ dakSa prajApate tAta zRNu me paramaM vacaH ॥ tatkuruSva surazreSTha zivaste zaM kariSyati ॥6॥
Brahmā said: O Dakṣa Prajāpati, listen to my weighty words and carry out the direction. Śiva will bless you with welfare.

या च पञ्चजनस्यांग सुता रम्या प्रजापतेः ॥ असिक्नी नाम पत्नीत्वे प्रजेश प्रतिगृह्यताम् ॥७॥
yA ca paJcajanasyAMga sutA ramyA prajApateH ॥ asiknI nAma patnItve prajeza pratigRhyatAm ॥7॥
O lord of subjects, let Asiknī, the beautiful daughter of Pañcajana, the lord of five tribes, be taken by you as your consort.

vAmavyavAyadharmastvaM prajAsargamimaM punaH ॥ tadvidhAyAM ca kAminyAM bhUrizo bhAvayiSyasi ॥8॥
Indulging in sexual intercourse you can create subjects many in number in a beautiful woman like her.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ ततस्समुत्पादयितुं प्रजा मैथुनधर्मतः ॥ उपयेमे वीरणस्य निदेशान्मे सुतां ततः ॥९॥
brahmovAca ॥ tatassamutpAdayituM prajA maithunadharmataH ॥ upayeme vIraNasya nidezAnme sutAM tataH ॥9॥
Brahmā said: Then, in order to procreate subjects by way of coitus he married the daughter of Vīraṇa at my bidding.

अथ तस्यां स्वपत्न्यां च वीरिण्यां स प्रजापतिः ॥ हर्यश्वसंज्ञानयुतं दक्षः पुत्रानजीजनत् ॥ 2-2-13-१० ॥
atha tasyAM svapatnyAM ca vIriNyAM sa prajApatiH ॥ haryazvasaMjJAnayutaM dakSaH putrAnajIjanat ॥ 2-2-13-10 ॥
Then in his wife Vīriṇī, Dakṣa Prajāpati begot sons named Haryaśvas.

अपृथग्धर्मशीलास्ते सर्व आसन् सुता मुने ॥ पितृभक्तिरता नित्यं वेदमार्गपरायणाः ॥ ११ ॥
apRthagdharmazIlAste sarva Asan sutA mune ॥ pitRbhaktiratA nityaM vedamArgaparAyaNAH ॥ 11 ॥
O sage, all those sons were devoted to their father and followed the Vedic path. They did not have separate virtues and practices.

पितृप्रोक्ताः प्रजासर्गकरणार्थं ययुर्दिशम् ॥ प्रतीचीं तपसे तात सर्वे दाक्षायणास्सुताः ॥१२॥
pitRproktAH prajAsargakaraNArthaM yayurdizam ॥ pratIcIM tapase tAta sarve dAkSAyaNAssutAH ॥12॥
Advised by their father, O dear one, the sons of Dakṣa went in the western direction for penance in order to create subjects (progeny).

तत्र नारायणसरस्तीर्थं परमपावनम्॥ गमो यत्र संजातो दिव्यसिन्धुसमुद्रयोः ॥ १३ ॥
tatra nArAyaNasarastIrthaM paramapAvanam॥ gamo yatra saMjAto divyasindhusamudrayoH ॥ 13 ॥
There they came to the holy lake Nārāyaṇa where the celestial Sindhu has its confluence with the ocean.

तदुपस्पर्शनादेव प्रोत्पन्नमतयोऽ भवन् ॥ धर्मे पारमहंसे च विनिर्द्धूतमलाशयाः ॥१४॥
tadupasparzanAdeva protpannamatayo' bhavan ॥ dharme pAramahaMse ca vinirddhUtamalAzayAH ॥14॥
On touching the holy water, their intellect was sharpened. The Dharma of holy ascetics eradicated all their impurities.

प्रजाविवृद्धये ते वै तेपिर तत्र सत्तमाः ॥ दाक्षायणा दृढात्मानः पित्रादेश सुयंत्रिताः ॥ १५ ॥
prajAvivRddhaye te vai tepira tatra sattamAH ॥ dAkSAyaNA dRDhAtmAnaH pitrAdeza suyaMtritAH ॥ 15 ॥
For making progenies flourish, the excellent sons of Dakṣa, fettered by the command of their father began to perform Tapas with steady resolve.

त्वं च तान् नारद ज्ञात्वा तपतस्सृष्टि हेतवे ॥ अगमस्तत्र भूरीणि हार्दमाज्ञाय मापतेः ॥ १६ ॥
tvaM ca tAn nArada jJAtvA tapatassRSTi hetave ॥ agamastatra bhUrINi hArdamAjJAya mApateH ॥ 16 ॥
O Nārada, you came to know that they were performing penance for the sake of creation. You realised the intention of Viṣṇu and went there.

अदृष्ट्वा तं भुवस्सृष्टि कथं कर्तुं समुद्यताः ॥ हर्यश्वा दक्षतनया इत्यवोचस्तमादरात् ॥ १७ ॥
adRSTvA taM bhuvassRSTi kathaM kartuM samudyatAH ॥ haryazvA dakSatanayA ityavocastamAdarAt ॥ 17 ॥
“O Haryaśvas, sons of Dakṣa, how is it that you have begun your attempts at creation without seeing the end of the earth?” So you asked them with respect.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ तन्निशम्याथ हर्यश्वास्ते त्वदुक्तमतंद्रिताः ॥ औत्पत्तिकधियस्सर्वे स्वयं विममृशुर्भृशम् ॥१८ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ tannizamyAtha haryazvAste tvaduktamataMdritAH ॥ autpattikadhiyassarve svayaM vimamRzurbhRzam ॥18 ॥
Brahmā said: They heard what you said eagerly. With their minds fixed on creation they deliberated on the proposal.

सुशास्त्रजनकादेशं यो न वेद निवर्तकम्॥ स कथं गुणविश्रंभी कर्तुं सर्गमुपक्रमेत्॥ १९॥
suzAstrajanakAdezaM yo na veda nivartakam॥ sa kathaM guNavizraMbhI kartuM sargamupakramet॥ 19॥
How can a person begin the work of creation putting faith in the Guṇas alone if he does not know the command of the father of Sacred Texts (which implies) turning back?

इति निश्चित्य ते पुत्रास्सुधियश्चैकचेतसः ॥ प्रणम्य तं परिक्रम्यायुर्मार्गमनिवर्तकम्॥2-2-13-२०॥
iti nizcitya te putrAssudhiyazcaikacetasaH ॥ praNamya taM parikramyAyurmArgamanivartakam॥2-2-13-20॥
Having made up their minds unanimously, the intelligent sons bowed to you and circumambulated. They then proceeded ahead on a path never to turn back.

नारद त्वं मनश्शंभोर्लोंकानन्यचरो मुने ॥ निर्विकारो महेशानमनोवृत्तिकरस्तदा ॥ २१ ॥
nArada tvaM manazzaMbhorloMkAnanyacaro mune ॥ nirvikAro mahezAnamanovRttikarastadA ॥ 21 ॥
O sage Nārada, with your mind fixed on Śiva, and desirous of carrying out His orders you went to various worlds without any mental aberration.

काले गते बहुतरे मम पुत्रः प्रजापतिः ॥ नाशं निशम्य पुत्राणां नारदादन्वतप्यत ॥ २२ ॥
kAle gate bahutare mama putraH prajApatiH ॥ nAzaM nizamya putrANAM nAradAdanvatapyata ॥ 22 ॥
When much time elapsed, my son Prajāpati heard that the extinction of his sons was due to Nārada and became distressed.

मुहुर्मुहुरुवाचेति सुप्रजात्वं शुचां पदम् ॥ शुशोच बहुशो दक्षश्शिवमायाविमोहितः ॥२३॥
muhurmuhuruvAceti suprajAtvaM zucAM padam ॥ zuzoca bahuzo dakSazzivamAyAvimohitaH ॥23॥
He frequently mused like this—“A multitude of sons brings only disaster”. Dakṣa who was deluded by Śiva’s illusion bewailed thus in many ways.

अहमागत्य सुप्रीत्या सांत्वयं दक्षमात्मजम् ॥ शांतिभावं प्रदर्श्यैव देवं प्रबलमित्युत ॥ २४ ॥
ahamAgatya suprItyA sAMtvayaM dakSamAtmajam ॥ zAMtibhAvaM pradarzyaiva devaM prabalamityuta ॥ 24 ॥
I went over to him and consoled my son Dakṣa out of love and reminded him that fate is all powerful. I pointed out the way to calmness.

अथ दक्षः पंचजन्या मया स परिसांत्वितः ॥ सबलाश्वाभिधान्् पुत्रान् सहस्रं चाप्यजीजनत् ॥ २५ ॥
atha dakSaH paMcajanyA mayA sa parisAMtvitaH ॥ sabalAzvAbhidhAn putrAn sahasraM cApyajIjanat ॥ 25 ॥
On being consoled by me, Dakṣa begot a thousand sons named Sabalāśvas in the daughter of Pañcajana.

तेपि जग्मुस्तत्र सुताः पित्रादिष्टा दृढव्रताः ॥ प्रजासर्गे अत्र सिद्धास्स्वपूर्वभ्रातरो ययुः ॥ २६ ॥
tepi jagmustatra sutAH pitrAdiSTA dRDhavratAH ॥ prajAsarge atra siddhAssvapUrvabhrAtaro yayuH ॥ 26 ॥
At the bidding of their father, they too reached the place where their elder brothers, the Siddhas, had gone with the same steady resolve in the creation of subjects.

तदुपस्पर्शनादेव नष्टाघा विमलाशयाः ॥ तेपुर्महत्तपस्तत्र जपन्तो ब्रह्म सुव्रताः ॥ ॥ २७ ॥
tadupasparzanAdeva naSTAghA vimalAzayAH ॥ tepurmahattapastatra japanto brahma suvratAH ॥ ॥ 27 ॥
At the very touch of waters of the Nārāyaṇa lake they too had their sins quelled and became purified. They performed penance, strenuously repeating many mantras and performing sacred rites.

प्रजासर्गोद्यतांस्तान् वै ज्ञात्वा गत्वेति नारद ॥ पूर्ववच्चागदो वाक्यं संस्मरन्नैश्वरीं गतिम् ॥ २८ ॥
prajAsargodyatAMstAn vai jJAtvA gatveti nArada ॥ pUrvavaccAgado vAkyaM saMsmarannaizvarIM gatim ॥ 28 ॥
O Nārada, you came to know that they too were attempting the creation of subjects and you told them as before, mindful of the way of Śiva.

भ्रातृपंथानमादिश्य त्वं मुने मोघदर्शनः ॥ अयाश्चोर्द्ध्वगतिं तेऽपि भ्रातृमार्गं ययुस्सुताः ॥ २९ ॥
bhrAtRpaMthAnamAdizya tvaM mune moghadarzanaH ॥ ayAzcorddhvagatiM te'pi bhrAtRmArgaM yayussutAH ॥ 29 ॥
O sage, of beneficient sight, you showed, them the path followed by their brothers. You went upto heaven and the sons of Dakṣa went the way of their brothers.

उत्पातान् बहुशोऽपश्यत्तदैव स प्रजापतिः ॥ विस्मितोभूत्स मे पुत्रो दक्षो मनसि दुःखितः ॥ 2-2-13-३० ॥
utpAtAn bahuzo'pazyattadaiva sa prajApatiH ॥ vismitobhUtsa me putro dakSo manasi duHkhitaH ॥ 2-2-13-30 ॥
At the very same time, my son Dakṣa Prajāpati saw many an ill omen. He was disagreeably surprised and felt distressed.

पूर्ववत्त्वत्कृतं दक्षश्शुश्राव चकितो भृशम् ॥ पुत्रनाशं शुशोचाति पुत्रशोक विमूर्छितः ॥ ३१ ॥
pUrvavattvatkRtaM dakSazzuzrAva cakito bhRzam ॥ putranAzaM zuzocAti putrazoka vimUrchitaH ॥ 31 ॥
As before, Dakṣa heard that the disappearance of his sons was brought about by you. He bewailed a lot. He was stunned, grief-stricken at the loss of his sons.

चुक्रोध तुभ्यं दक्षोसौ दुष्टोयमिति चाब्रवीत् ॥ आगतस्तत्र दैवात्त्वमनुग्रहकरस्तदा ॥ ३२ ॥
cukrodha tubhyaM dakSosau duSToyamiti cAbravIt ॥ Agatastatra daivAttvamanugrahakarastadA ॥ 32 ॥
Dakṣa was furious. He called you a wicked fellow. Fate caused you to go there at the psychological moment in the guise of one who wanted to bless him.

शोकाविष्टस्स दक्षो हि रोषविस्फुरिताधरः ॥ उपलभ्य तमाहत्य धिग्धिक् प्रोच्य विगर्हयन् ॥ ३३ ॥
zokAviSTassa dakSo hi roSavisphuritAdharaH ॥ upalabhya tamAhatya dhigdhik procya vigarhayan ॥ 33 ॥
The grief-stricken Dakṣa approached you with his lips throbbing with fury, taunted you and reproached you saying “Fie, Fie” and spoke to you.

दक्ष उवाच ॥ किं कृतं तेऽधमश्रेष्ठ साधूनां साधुलिंगतः ॥ भिक्षोमार्गोऽर्भकानां वै दर्शितस्साधुकारि नो ॥३४॥
dakSa uvAca ॥ kiM kRtaM te'dhamazreSTha sAdhUnAM sAdhuliMgataH ॥ bhikSomArgo'rbhakAnAM vai darzitassAdhukAri no ॥34॥
Dakṣa said: O foremost among the base, disguised in the garb of a saint, what is it that you have done to those good people—my sons? To those engaged in good actions the accursed path of a mendicant has been pointed out by you.

ऋणैस्त्रिभिरमुक्तानां लोकयोरुभयोः कृतः ॥ विघातश्श्रेयसोऽमीषां निर्दयेन शठेन ते ॥३५॥
RNaistribhiramuktAnAM lokayorubhayoH kRtaH ॥ vighAtazzreyaso'mISAM nirdayena zaThena te ॥35॥
Ruthless rogue that you are, even when they were not free from the three debts you put obstacles in the path of their progress both here as well as hereafter.

ऋणानि त्रीण्यपाकृत्य यो गृहात्प्रव्रजेत्पुमान्॥ मातरं पितरं त्यक्त्वा मोक्षमिच्छन्व्रजत्यधः ॥३६॥
RNAni trINyapAkRtya yo gRhAtpravrajetpumAn॥ mAtaraM pitaraM tyaktvA mokSamicchanvrajatyadhaH ॥36॥
He who renounces the world desiring salvation, without repaying the three debts and departs from the house forsaking his parents surely courts downfall.

निर्दयस्त्वं सुनिर्लज्जश्शिशुधीभिद्यशोऽपहा॥ हरेः पार्षदमध्ये हि वृथा चरसि मूढधीः ॥३७॥
nirdayastvaM sunirlajjazzizudhIbhidyazo'pahA॥ hareH pArSadamadhye hi vRthA carasi mUDhadhIH ॥37॥
You are unkind, shameless, distorter of the tender intellect of children, and a destroyer of fame. Why do you, a foolish fellow, move about among the attendants of Viṣṇu in vain?

मुहुर्मुहुरभद्रं त्वमचरो मेऽधमा ऽधम ॥ विभवेद्भ्रमतस्तेऽतः पदं लोकेषु स्थिरम्॥३८॥
muhurmuhurabhadraM tvamacaro me'dhamA 'dhama ॥ vibhavedbhramataste'taH padaM lokeSu sthiram॥38॥
Frequently you have committed offences against me, O basest of the base. Hence roaming ever in the worlds your feet will never be steady anywhere.

शशापेति शुचा दक्षस्त्वां तदा साधुसंमतम्॥ बुबोध नेश्वरेच्छां स शिवमायाविमोहितः ॥३९॥
zazApeti zucA dakSastvAM tadA sAdhusaMmatam॥ bubodha nezvarecchAM sa zivamAyAvimohitaH ॥39॥
Grief-stricken Dakṣa cursed you thus, you who are honoured by saints. It was Śiva’s power of delusion that prevented him from understanding the will of Īśvara.

शापं प्रत्यग्रहीश्च त्वं स मुने निर्विकारधीः ॥ एष एव ब्रह्मसाधो सहते सोपि च स्वयम्॥2-2-13-४०॥
zApaM pratyagrahIzca tvaM sa mune nirvikAradhIH ॥ eSa eva brahmasAdho sahate sopi ca svayam॥2-2-13-40॥
Without your mind being affected the least, you accepted the curse. All saintly Brahminical saints forbear thus.
