nArada uvAca॥ brahman vidhe mahAbhAga dhanyastvaM zivasaktadhIH॥ kathitaM sucaritraM te zaMkarasya parAtmanaH॥1॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, the fortunate, the dispenser of the fruits of our actions, you are a blessed devotee of Śiva, as your mind is fixed in him. You have narrated to me the good story of Śiva, the great soul.

When Kāma returned to his hermitage with Rati and his followers what happened and what steps you took? Please narrate that now.

brahmovAca॥ zRNu nArada suprItyA caritraM zazimaulinaH॥ yasya zravaNamAtreNa nirvikAro bhavennaraH ॥ 3 ॥
Brahmā said: O Nārada listen lovingly to the story of the moon-crested lord, a mere listening to which makes a man free from depravity and decay.

naSTobhUnnArada mado vismayo'bhUcca me hRdi ॥ nirAnaMdasya ca mune'pUrNo nijamanorathe॥5॥
O sage Nārada, my arrogance was quashed when my desire remained unrealised. And surprise filled my dissatisfied and distressed heart.

azocaM bahudhA citte gRhNIyAtsa kathaM striyam ॥ nirvikArI jitAtmA sa zaMkaro yogatatparaH॥6॥
How will Śiva who is free from depravity, who has conquered himself and who is devoted to Yogic practices take up a wife unto himself? Thinking thus I bewailed a lot.

इत्थं विचार्य बहुधा तदाहं विमदो मुने ॥ हरिं तं सोऽस्मरं भक्त्या शिवात्मानं स्वदेहदम् ॥७॥
itthaM vicArya bahudhA tadAhaM vimado mune ॥ hariM taM so'smaraM bhaktyA zivAtmAnaM svadehadam ॥7॥
Anxiously thinking all this about, O sage, I became free from haughtiness. I remembered Viṣṇu who is identical with Śiva and who is the cause of my origin.

अस्तवं च शुभस्तोत्रैर्दीनवाक्यसमन्वितैः॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा भगवानाशु बभूवाविर्हि मे पुरा॥८॥
astavaM ca zubhastotrairdInavAkyasamanvitaiH॥ tacchrutvA bhagavAnAzu babhUvAvirhi me purA॥8॥
I eulogised Him with auspicious hymns supplemented by statements of my miserable predicament on hearing which the lord appeared before me immediately.

चतुर्भुजोरविंदाक्षः शंरववार्ज गदाधरः॥ लसत्पीत पटश्श्यामतनुर्भक्तप्रियो हरिः ॥ ९ ॥
caturbhujoraviMdAkSaH zaMravavArja gadAdharaH॥ lasatpIta paTazzyAmatanurbhaktapriyo hariH ॥ 9 ॥
The lord Viṣṇu with four arms, lotus-like eyes, holding conch, lotus and mace in his hands and wearing the refulgent yellow robe, dark-complexioned and the beloved of the devotees.

तं दृष्ट्वा तादृशमहं सुशरण्यं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ अस्तवं च पुनः प्रेम्णा बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥2-2-10-१०॥
taM dRSTvA tAdRzamahaM suzaraNyaM muhurmuhuH ॥ astavaM ca punaH premNA bASpagadgadayA girA ॥2-2-10-10॥
On seeing him in that form I eulogised him again with devotion and words choked with tears. I considered him as my sole refuge.

हरिराकर्ण्य तत्स्तोत्रं सुप्रसन्न उवाच माम् ॥ दुःखहा निजभक्तानां ब्रह्माणं शरणं गतम् ॥ ११ ॥
harirAkarNya tatstotraM suprasanna uvAca mAm ॥ duHkhahA nijabhaktAnAM brahmANaM zaraNaM gatam ॥ 11 ॥
On hearing this psalm of prayer, Viṣṇu, the destroyer of the miseries of his devotees, became delighted and spoke to me who sought refuge in him.

हरिरुवाच ॥ विधे ब्रह्मन् महाप्राज्ञ धन्यस्त्वं लोककारक ॥ किमर्थं स्मरणं मेऽद्य कृतं च क्रियते नुतिः ॥ १२॥
hariruvAca ॥ vidhe brahman mahAprAjJa dhanyastvaM lokakAraka ॥ kimarthaM smaraNaM me'dya kRtaM ca kriyate nutiH ॥ 12॥
Viṣṇu said: O Brahmā of great intellect, you are the blessed creator of the world. Why did you remember me? Why do you laud me?

किं जातं ते महद्दुःखं मदग्रे तद्वदाधुना ॥ शमयिष्यामि तत्सर्वं नात्र कार्य्या विचारणा ॥ १३ ॥
kiM jAtaM te mahadduHkhaM madagre tadvadAdhunA ॥ zamayiSyAmi tatsarvaM nAtra kAryyA vicAraNA ॥ 13 ॥
What great misery has befallen you? Tell me now. I shall quell it entirely. You need not entertain any doubt in this respect.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इति विष्णोर्वचश्श्रुत्वा किंचिदुच्छवसिताननः ॥ अवोच वचनं विष्णुं प्रणम्य सुकृतांजलिः ॥१४ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ iti viSNorvacazzrutvA kiMciducchavasitAnanaH ॥ avoca vacanaM viSNuM praNamya sukRtAMjaliH ॥14 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing the words of Viṣṇu I heaved a sigh of relief and raised my face. I spoke to Viṣṇu with due salutations and palms joined in reverence.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ देवदेव रमानाथ मद्वार्तां शृणु मानद ॥ श्रुत्वा च करुणां कृत्वा हर दुःखं कमावह ॥१५॥
brahmovAca ॥ devadeva ramAnAtha madvArtAM zRNu mAnada ॥ zrutvA ca karuNAM kRtvA hara duHkhaM kamAvaha ॥15॥
Brahmā said: O lord of Lakṣmī, lord of Gods, please listen to my submission, O bestower of Honour. On hearing it please take pity, remove my misery and bestow happiness on me.

रुद्रसंमोहनार्थं हि कामं प्रेषितवानहम् ॥ परिवारयुतं विष्णो समारमधुबांधवम् ॥१६॥
rudrasaMmohanArthaM hi kAmaM preSitavAnaham ॥ parivArayutaM viSNo samAramadhubAMdhavam ॥16॥
O Viṣṇu, I sent Kāma with his followers, Māras, Spring and others in order to fascinate Rudra.

चक्रुस्ते विविधोपायान् निष्फला अभवंश्च ते ॥ अभवत्तस्य संमोहो योगिनस्समदर्शिनः ॥१७॥
cakruste vividhopAyAn niSphalA abhavaMzca te ॥ abhavattasya saMmoho yoginassamadarzinaH ॥17॥
They employed various means but in vain. He, the ascetic of equanimity, was not moved at all.

इत्याकर्ण्य वचो मे स हरिर्मां प्राह विस्मितः ॥ विज्ञाताखिलदज्ञानी शिवतत्त्वविशारदः ॥ १८ ॥
ityAkarNya vaco me sa harirmAM prAha vismitaH ॥ vijJAtAkhiladajJAnI zivatattvavizAradaH ॥ 18 ॥
On hearing these words of mine Viṣṇu the omniscient who is conversant in the principles of Śiva-cult was surprised and spoke to me thus.

॥ विष्णुरुवाच ॥ कस्माद्धेतोरिति मतिस्तव जाता पितामह ॥ सर्वं विचार्य सुधिया ब्रह्मन् सत्यं हि तद्वद ॥ १९ ॥
॥ viSNuruvAca ॥ kasmAddhetoriti matistava jAtA pitAmaha ॥ sarvaM vicArya sudhiyA brahman satyaM hi tadvada ॥ 19 ॥
Viṣṇu said: O Brahmā, how is it that such an idea entered into your mind? Considering everything sensibly tell me the truth.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ शृणु तात चरित्रं तत् तव माया विमोहिनी ॥ तदधीनं जगत्सर्वं सुखदुःखादितत्परम् ॥2-2-10-२०॥
brahmovAca ॥ zRNu tAta caritraM tat tava mAyA vimohinI ॥ tadadhInaM jagatsarvaM sukhaduHkhAditatparam ॥2-2-10-20॥
Brahmā said: Dear lord, hear the story. Your magic is very fascinating. The world is attracted by it. Happiness and misery are based on the same.

ययैव प्रेषितश्चाहं पापं कर्तुं समुद्यतः ॥ आसं तच्छृणु देवेश वदामि तव शासनात् ॥२१॥
yayaiva preSitazcAhaM pApaM kartuM samudyataH ॥ AsaM tacchRNu deveza vadAmi tava zAsanAt ॥21॥
Induced by that I resolved on committing the sin. Please listen. At your bidding I shall narrate it in detail.

सृष्टिप्रारंभसमये दश पुत्रा हि जज्ञिरे ॥ दक्षाद्यास्तनया चैका वाग्भवाप्यतिसुन्दरी ॥ २२ ॥
sRSTiprAraMbhasamaye daza putrA hi jajJire ॥ dakSAdyAstanayA caikA vAgbhavApyatisundarI ॥ 22 ॥
At the beginning of the creation ten sons were born to me together with a very beautiful daughter originating from my speech.

धर्मो वक्षःस्थलात्कामो मनसोन्योपि देहतः ॥ जातास्तत्र सुतां दृष्ट्वा मम मोहो भवद्धरे ॥२३॥
dharmo vakSaHsthalAtkAmo manasonyopi dehataH ॥ jAtAstatra sutAM dRSTvA mama moho bhavaddhare ॥23॥
Dharma originated from the heart and Kāma from the various parts of my body. O Viṣṇu, on seeing my daughter I was highly fascinated.

कुदृष्ट्या तां समद्राक्ष तव मायाविमोहितः ॥ तत्क्षणाद्धर आगत्य मामनिन्दत्सुतानपि ॥२४॥
kudRSTyA tAM samadrAkSa tava mAyAvimohitaH ॥ tatkSaNAddhara Agatya mAmanindatsutAnapi ॥24॥
I looked at her with a distorted vision since I had been deluded by your Māyā. Immediately Śiva came there and reproached me and my sons too.

धिक्कारं कृतवान् सर्वान्निजं मत्वा परप्रभुम् ॥ ज्ञानिनं योगिनं नाथाभोगिनं विजितेन्द्रियम्॥२५॥
dhikkAraM kRtavAn sarvAnnijaM matvA paraprabhum ॥ jJAninaM yoginaM nAthAbhoginaM vijitendriyam॥25॥
He rebuked us considering Himself the sole lord, possessed of supreme knowledge and adept in Yogic practices and an enjoyer with full control over all sense-organs.

पुत्रो भूत्वा मम हरेऽनिन्दन्मां च समक्षतः ॥ इति दुःखं महन्मे हि तदुक्तं तव सन्निधौ ॥२६॥
putro bhUtvA mama hare'nindanmAM ca samakSataH ॥ iti duHkhaM mahanme hi taduktaM tava sannidhau ॥26॥
O Viṣṇu, my sorrow is that even after manifesting Himself as my son He reproached me face to face. I have mentioned it to you now.

गृह्णीयाद्यदि पत्नीं स स्यां सुखी नष्टदुःखधी ॥ एतदर्थं समायातुश्शरणं तव केशव ॥ २७ ॥
gRhNIyAdyadi patnIM sa syAM sukhI naSTaduHkhadhI ॥ etadarthaM samAyAtuzzaraNaM tava kezava ॥ 27 ॥
If He were to take a wife unto Himself I shall become happy and forget all my miseries. O Keśava, it is for this purpose that I have sought refuge in you.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य वचो मे हि ब्रह्मणो मधुसूदनः ॥ विहस्य मां द्रुतं प्राह हर्षयन्भवकारकम् ॥ २८ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vaco me hi brahmaNo madhusUdanaH ॥ vihasya mAM drutaM prAha harSayanbhavakArakam ॥ 28 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words of mine, Viṣṇu laughed and spoke immediately delighting me, the cause of entire creation.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ विधे शृणु हि मद्वाक्यं सर्वं भ्रमनिवारणम् ॥ सर्वं वेदागमादीनां संमतं परमार्थतः ॥ २९ ॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ vidhe zRNu hi madvAkyaM sarvaM bhramanivAraNam ॥ sarvaM vedAgamAdInAM saMmataM paramArthataH ॥ 29 ॥
Viṣṇu said: O Brahmā listen to my words in full. It will eradicate your frustration. It will be consistent with what is said in the Vedas and Āgamas and what is in conformity with reality.

महामूढमतिश्चाद्य संजातोसि कथं विधे ॥ वेदवक्तापि निखिललोककर्त्ता हि दुर्मतिः ॥ 2-2-10-३० ॥
mahAmUDhamatizcAdya saMjAtosi kathaM vidhe ॥ vedavaktApi nikhilalokakarttA hi durmatiH ॥ 2-2-10-30 ॥
O Brahmā, how is it that you became so utterly confused in the mind? It is improper for the reciter of the Vedas and the creator of the universe to be so wicked.

जडतां त्यज मन्दात्मन् कुरु त्वं नेदृशीं मतिम् ॥ किं ब्रुवंत्यखिला वेदाः स्तुत्या तत्स्मर सद्धिया ॥ ३१ ॥
jaDatAM tyaja mandAtman kuru tvaM nedRzIM matim ॥ kiM bruvaMtyakhilA vedAH stutyA tatsmara saddhiyA ॥ 31 ॥
O slow-witted one, cast-off this sluggishness. Do not indulge in such foolish thoughts hereafter. What is it that the Vedas say by means of their hymns? Think on it with a pure mind.

रुद्रं जानासि दुर्बुद्धे स्वसुतं परमेश्वरम् ॥ वेदवक्तापि विज्ञानं विस्मृतं तेखिलं विधे ॥ ३२ ॥
rudraM jAnAsi durbuddhe svasutaM paramezvaram ॥ vedavaktApi vijJAnaM vismRtaM tekhilaM vidhe ॥ 32 ॥
You foolishly think of Rudra, the great lord as your son. O Brahman, though the reciter of the Vedas you have forgotten all true knowledge.

शंकरं सुरसामान्यं मत्वा द्रोहं करोषि हि ॥ सुबुद्धिर्विगता तेद्याविर्भूता कुमतिस्तथा ॥३३॥
zaMkaraM surasAmAnyaM matvA drohaM karoSi hi ॥ subuddhirvigatA tedyAvirbhUtA kumatistathA ॥33॥
Considering Śiva on a par with ordinary Gods you are maliciously disposed towards Him. Your good intents have vanished and evil ones have cropped up.

तत्त्वसिद्धांतमाख्यातं शृणु सद्बुद्धिमावह ॥ यथार्थं निगमाख्यातं निर्णीय भवकारकम् ॥३४॥
tattvasiddhAMtamAkhyAtaM zRNu sadbuddhimAvaha ॥ yathArthaM nigamAkhyAtaM nirNIya bhavakArakam ॥34॥
Listen to the first principle that had been narrated of old. Have clean conscience. It is the true Being that is glorified as the cause of all Creation. This is decisive.

शिवस्सर्वस्वकर्ता हि भर्ता हर्ता परात्परः ॥ परब्रह्म परेशश्च निर्गुणो नित्य एव च । ३५ ॥
zivassarvasvakartA hi bhartA hartA parAtparaH ॥ parabrahma parezazca nirguNo nitya eva ca । 35 ॥
Śiva is the creator of everything, the sustainer and destroyer. He is greater than the great. He is the supreme Brahman, the greatest lord, the attributeless, the eternal.

अनिर्देश्यो निर्विकारी परमात्माऽद्वयोऽच्युतः ॥ अनंतोंतकरः स्वामी व्यापकः परमेश्वरः ॥ ३६ ॥
anirdezyo nirvikArI paramAtmA'dvayo'cyutaH ॥ anaMtoMtakaraH svAmI vyApakaH paramezvaraH ॥ 36 ॥
He cannot be defined. He is not subject to deterioration or decay. He is the supreme soul, without a second, unswerving and endless. He is the cause of dissolution, all-pervasive and great lord.

सृष्टिस्थितिविनाशानां कर्त्ता त्रिगुणभाग्विभुः ॥ ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशाख्यो रजस्सत्त्व तमःपरः ॥ ३७ ॥
sRSTisthitivinAzAnAM karttA triguNabhAgvibhuH ॥ brahmaviSNumahezAkhyo rajassattva tamaHparaH ॥ 37 ॥
He is all-pervasive, possessed of three guṇas, for the causation of creation, sustenance and dissolution in the name of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa but really beyond Rajas, Śattva and Tamas—the three attributes.

मायाभिन्नो निरीहश्च मायो मायाविशारदः ॥ सगुणोपि स्वतंत्रश्च निजानंदो विकल्पकः ॥ ३८ ॥
mAyAbhinno nirIhazca mAyo mAyAvizAradaH ॥ saguNopi svataMtrazca nijAnaMdo vikalpakaH ॥ 38 ॥
He is distinct from illusion. He is free from desires. He is the creator of illusion yet uninfluenced by illusion. He is an adept. He is possessed of attributes yet independent of them. He is blissful in Himself. He is free from suspicions and alternatives.

आत्मा रामो हि निर्द्वन्द्वो भक्ताधीनस्सुविग्रहः ॥ योगी योगरतो नित्यं योगमार्गप्रदर्शकः ॥ ३९ ॥
AtmA rAmo hi nirdvandvo bhaktAdhInassuvigrahaH ॥ yogI yogarato nityaM yogamArgapradarzakaH ॥ 39 ॥
He rests and relaxes in His own soul. He is free from the pair of opposites, such as happiness and unhappiness. He is subservient to His devotees in a fine physical body. He is a yogin devoted always to the practice of Yogas. He is guide to the path of Yoga.

गर्वापहारी लोकेशस्सर्वदा दीनवत्सलः ॥ एतादृशो हि यः स्वामी स्वपुत्रं मन्यसे हि तम् ॥ 2-2-10-४० ॥
garvApahArI lokezassarvadA dInavatsalaH ॥ etAdRzo hi yaH svAmI svaputraM manyase hi tam ॥ 2-2-10-40 ॥
He is the lord of the worlds and the destroyer of arrogance. He is favourably disposed to the miserable. Such is the lord, our master whom you consider your son!

Cast-off all these stupid notions. Seek refuge in Him. Worship Him exclusively. When He is propitiated He will bestow on you all that is auspicious and beneficent.

O Brahmā, if a thought surges in your heart that Śiva should take a wife unto Himself, you must perform penance directed to Śiva and think upon Śiva.

Meditate upon Śiva with that desire cherished in your heart. If that Goddess is propitiated she will do everything.

If Śivā takes an incarnation as a human being in Her attributive aspect, as the daughter of a person in the world, She will definitely become His wife.

dakSamAjJApaya brahman tapaH kuryyAtprayatnataH ॥ tAmutpAdayituM patnIM zivArthaM bhaktitatsvataH ॥45॥
O Brahmā, command Dakṣa. Let him carry out a penance strenuously with a great devotion to beget her to be given as a wife unto Śiva.

bhaktAdhInau ca tau tAta suvijJeyau zivAzivau ॥ svecchayA saguNau jAtau parabrahmasvarUpiNau ॥ 46॥
O dear, Śivā and Śiva are subservient to their devotees. This must be realised. Both of them being intrinsically the supreme Brahman can readily assume attributive form out of their own free will.

brahmovAca ॥ ॥ ityuktvA tatkSaNaM mezazzivaM sasmAra svaprabhum ॥ kRpayA tasya saMprApya jJAnamUce ca mAM tataH ॥ 47 ॥
Brahmā said: After saying so, the lord of Lakṣmī thought upon his lord Śiva. Thanks to His favour, he received the real knowledge and spoke to me again.

Viṣṇu said: O Brahmā remember the words spoken by Śiva formerly when requested, due to His own will, by us at the time of our nativity.

vismRtaM tava tatsarvaM dhanyA yA zAMbhavI parA ॥ tayA saMmohitaM sarvaM durvijJeyA zivaM vinA ॥ 49 ॥
Everything has been forgotten by you. Blessed indeed is the great illusion of Śiva which deludes everything. It is incomprehensible to all except Śiva.

yadA hi saguNo jAtassvecchayA nirguNazzivaH ॥ mAmutpAdya tatastvAM ca svazaktyA suvihArakRt ॥ 2-2-10-50 ॥
When Śiva devoid of attributes became, out of His own accord, full of attributes, He created me first and then you with His own power in the course of His divine sport. The lord Śiva assigned to you the work of creation.

The lord Śiva assigned to you the work of creation. O Brahman, the imperishable Śiva, the cause of creation, entrusted me with the task of sustaining it.

Then we requested Him “O Śiva, the lord of all, be pleased to take an incarnation with all your attributes.”

Thus requested He laughed and spoke sympathetically, with his eyes raised to Heaven. Verily He is an adept in divine sports.

O Viṣṇu, a form of mine like this shall be manifested through my limbs and shall be glorified as Rudra in the world.

pUrNarUpassa me pUjyassadA vAM sarvakAmakRt ॥ layakarttA guNAdhyakSo nirvizeSaH suyogakRt ॥ 55 ॥
He is my full form and perfect manifestation. He is worthy of being worshipped by both of you. He shall fulfil your desires entirely. He is the cause of dissolution, the presiding deity of attributes, the practitioner of perfect Yoga without anyone to exceed.

tridevA api me rUpaM haraH pUrNo vizeSataH ॥ umAyA api rUpANi bhaviSyaMti tridhA sutAH ॥56॥
All the three deities are my forms. But Śiva is particularly my full manifestation O sons, Śivā’s forms too shall be three.

लक्ष्मीर्नाम हरेः पत्नी ब्रह्मपत्नी सरस्वती ॥ पूर्णरूपा सती नाम रुद्रपत्नी भविष्यति॥५७॥।
lakSmIrnAma hareH patnI brahmapatnI sarasvatI ॥ pUrNarUpA satI nAma rudrapatnI bhaviSyati॥57॥।
The form Lakṣmī is Viṣṇu’s wife; Brahmā’s wife is Sarasvatī. The perfect form Satī shall become Rudra’s wife.

viSNuruvAca ॥ ityuktvAMtarhito jAtaH kRpAM kRtvA mahezvaraH ॥ abhUtAM sukhinAvAvAM svasvakAryaparAyaNau ॥ 58 ॥
After saying this, the great lord blessed us and vanished. We bent our heads and joined our palms in reverence and returned to our respective abodes. Engaged in our own tasks we were very happy.

samayaM prApya sastrIkAvAvAM brahmanna zaMkaraH॥ avatIrNassvayaM rudranAmA kailAsasaMzrayaH॥59॥
In due course we secured our wives. Śiva incarnated as Rudra at Kailāsa, His residence.

अवतीर्णा शिवा स्यात्सा सतीनाम प्रजेश्वर॥ तदुत्पादनहेतोर्हि यत्नोतः कार्य एव वै ॥2-2-10-६०॥
avatIrNA zivA syAtsA satInAma prajezvara॥ tadutpAdanahetorhi yatnotaH kArya eva vai ॥2-2-10-60॥
O lord of subjects, Śivā too shall incarnate as Satī. An effort shall be made for Her future incarnation.

इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे विष्णुः कृत्वा स करुणां परम् ॥ प्राप्नुवं प्रमुदं चाथ ह्यधिकं गतमत्सरः॥ ॥ ६१ ॥
ityuktvAMtardadhe viSNuH kRtvA sa karuNAM param ॥ prApnuvaM pramudaM cAtha hyadhikaM gatamatsaraH॥ ॥ 61 ॥
After saying this, Viṣṇu blessed me and vanished. I rejoiced much and my jealousy disappeared altogether.
