Sūta Said: After hearing the words of Brahmā, Prajāpati, Nārada became delighted in his mind and spoke these words.

nArada uvAca ॥ brahman vidhe mahAbhAga viSNuziSya mahAmate ॥ dhanyastvaM zivabhakto hi paratattvapradarzakaH ॥2॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, the great disciple of Viṣṇu, endowed with great intellect, you are a blessed devotee of Śiva and a guide to the understanding of the great principle.

zrAvitA sukathA divyA zivabhaktivivarddhinI ॥ aruMdhatyAstathA tasyAH svarUpAyAH pare bhave ॥ 3 ॥
You have narrated the divine story of Arundhatī and her previous form. It increases our devotion to Śiva.

इदानीं ब्रूहि धर्मज्ञ पवित्रं चरितं परम् ॥ शिवस्य परपापघ्नं मंगलप्रदमुत्तमम् ॥ ४ ॥
idAnIM brUhi dharmajJa pavitraM caritaM param ॥ zivasya parapApaghnaM maMgalapradamuttamam ॥ 4 ॥
Now, O knower of virtue, please tell me the excellent story of Śiva, that quells all sins and is very excellent bestower of all auspicious benefits.

brahmovAca ॥ zRNu nArada viprendra tadaiva caritaM zubham ॥ zivalIlAnvitaM bhaktyA dhanyastvaM zivasevakaH ॥ 7 ॥
Brahmā said: O great brahmin, Nārada, listen with devotion to the auspicious story of Śiva’s divine sports. You are a blessed devotee of Śiva.

अहं विमोहितस्तात यदैवांतर्हितः पुरा ॥ अचिंतयं सदाहं तच्छंभुवाक्यविषार्दितः ॥८॥
ahaM vimohitastAta yadaivAMtarhitaH purA ॥ aciMtayaM sadAhaM tacchaMbhuvAkyaviSArditaH ॥8॥
O dear one, since I vanished from that place highly distressed by the poisonous words of Śiva, I had been thinking about that alone, since I had been in delusion still.

ciMtayitvA ciraM citte zivamAyAvimohitaH ॥ zive cerSyAmakArSaM hi tacchRvRNuSva vadAmi te ॥ 9 ॥
After thinking about it for a long time I began to nurse malicious grudge against Śiva, here again being deluded by Śiva’s Māyā. I shall explain it to you. Listen.

athAhamagamaM tatra yatra dakSAdayaH sthitAH ॥ saratiM madanaM dRSTvA samadoha hi kiJcana ॥ 2-2-8-10 ॥
Then I went to the place where Dakṣa and others were present. On seeing Kāma in the company of Rati I was a little elated.

O Nārada, addressing Dakṣa and the other sons I spoke these words, deluded by Śiva’s illusion.

brahmovAca ॥ he dakSa he marIcyAdyAssutAH zRNuta madvacaH ॥ zrutvopAyaM vidheyaM hi mama kaSTApanuttaye ॥ 12 ॥
O Dakṣa, O Marīci and others, my sons, listen to my words. After hearing you shall all find out a remedy for dispelling my distress.

कांताभिलाषमात्रं मे दृष्ट्वा शम्भुरगर्हयत् ॥ मां च युष्मान्महायोगी धिक्कारं कृतवान्बहु ॥ १३ ॥
kAMtAbhilASamAtraM me dRSTvA zambhuragarhayat ॥ mAM ca yuSmAnmahAyogI dhikkAraM kRtavAnbahu ॥ 13 ॥
Taking into consideration the only fact of harbouring a desire for woman Śiva despised me and you. It is because He is a great Yogin that He reproached us much.

तेन दुःखाभितप्तोहं लभेहं शर्म न क्वचित् ॥ यथा गृह्णातु कांतां स स यत्नः कार्य एव हि ॥ १४ ॥
tena duHkhAbhitaptohaM labhehaM zarma na kvacit ॥ yathA gRhNAtu kAMtAM sa sa yatnaH kArya eva hi ॥ 14 ॥
Hence I am greatly distressed and I do not get mental peace at all. Such an effort must definitely be made as would make Him take a wife unto Himself.

यथा गृह्णातु कांतां स सुखी स्यां दुःखवर्जितः ॥ दुर्लभस्य तु कामो मे परं मन्ये विचारतः ॥१५॥
yathA gRhNAtu kAMtAM sa sukhI syAM duHkhavarjitaH ॥ durlabhasya tu kAmo me paraM manye vicArataH ॥15॥
I shall become happy and be free from misery when He takes a wife unto Himself. But on reflection I feel that it is impossible to realise the accomplishment of this desire.

kAMtAbhilASamAtraM me dRSTvA zaMbhuragarhayat ॥ munInAM purataH kasmAtsa kAMtAM saMgrahISyati ॥ 16 ॥
Taking into consideration the only fact that I harboured a desire for woman, Śiva rebuked me in the presence of sages. How will He then take a wife unto Himself?

का वा नारी त्रिलोकेस्मिन् या भवेत्तन्मनाः स्थिता ॥ योगमार्गमवज्ञाप्य तस्य मोहं करिष्यति ॥ १७ ॥
kA vA nArI trilokesmin yA bhavettanmanAH sthitA ॥ yogamArgamavajJApya tasya mohaM kariSyati ॥ 17 ॥
Who can be that woman in the three worlds who will ever haunt his mind, make him neglect the path of Yoga and delude him?

मन्मथोपि समर्थो नो भविष्यत्यस्य मोहने ॥ नितांतयोगी रामाणां नामापि सहते न सः ॥ १८ ॥
manmathopi samartho no bhaviSyatyasya mohane ॥ nitAMtayogI rAmANAM nAmApi sahate na saH ॥ 18 ॥
Even Kāma will not be competent to delude Him. He is a Yogin of great perfection and He does not brook even the name of women.

अगृहीतेषुणा चैव हरेण कथमादिना ॥ मध्यमा च भवेत्सृष्टिस्तद्वाचा नान्यवारिता ॥ १९ ॥
agRhIteSuNA caiva hareNa kathamAdinA ॥ madhyamA ca bhavetsRSTistadvAcA nAnyavAritA ॥ 19 ॥
Unless the primordial Being Śiva indulges in sexual sport, the creation would continue to be mediocre, its course being unchecked as the Lord himself has stated.

भुवि केचिद्भविष्यंति मायाबद्धा महासुराः ॥ बद्धा केचिद्धरेर्नूनं केचिच्छंभोरुपायतः ॥ 2-2-8-२० ॥
bhuvi kecidbhaviSyaMti mAyAbaddhA mahAsurAH ॥ baddhA keciddharernUnaM kecicchaMbhorupAyataH ॥ 2-2-8-20 ॥
On the earth there may be great Asuras bound by illusion. Some are bound by the illusion of Viṣṇu and others by the illusion of Śiva.

संसारविमुखे शंभौ तथैकांतविरागिणि ॥ अस्मादृते न कर्मान्यत् करिष्यति न संशयः ॥ २१ ॥
saMsAravimukhe zaMbhau tathaikAMtavirAgiNi ॥ asmAdRte na karmAnyat kariSyati na saMzayaH ॥ 21 ॥
In regard to Śiva who has turned away from the world and who is extremely detached, nothing else except the endeavour of Kāma will be effective. There is no doubt about it.

इत्युक्त्वा तनयांश्चाहं दक्षादीन् सुनिरीक्ष्य च ॥ सरतिं मदनं तत्र सानंदमगदं ततः ॥ २२ ॥
ityuktvA tanayAMzcAhaM dakSAdIn sunirIkSya ca ॥ saratiM madanaM tatra sAnaMdamagadaM tataH ॥ 22 ॥
After saying this and casting meaningful glances at Dakṣa and other sons, I addressed Kāma and Rati with great pleasure.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ मत्पुत्र वर काम त्वं सर्वथा सुखदायकः ॥ मद्वचश्शृणु सुप्रीत्या स्वपत्न्या पितृवत्सल ॥ २३ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ matputra vara kAma tvaM sarvathA sukhadAyakaH ॥ madvacazzRNu suprItyA svapatnyA pitRvatsala ॥ 23 ॥
O Kāma, foremost among my sons, you are the bestower of happiness in every respect. Listen to my words with great attention in the company of your wife, O son of great filial affection.

अनया सहचारिण्या राजसे त्वं मनोभव ॥ एषा च भवता पत्या युक्ता संशोभते भृशम् ॥ २४ ॥
anayA sahacAriNyA rAjase tvaM manobhava ॥ eSA ca bhavatA patyA yuktA saMzobhate bhRzam ॥ 24 ॥
O Kāma, you shine well with this life-companion of yours. She too shines well with you as her husband.

यथा स्त्रिया हृषीकेशो हरिणा सा यथा रमा ॥ क्षणदा विधुना युक्ता तया युक्तो यथा विधुः ॥ २५ ॥
yathA striyA hRSIkezo hariNA sA yathA ramA ॥ kSaNadA vidhunA yuktA tayA yukto yathA vidhuH ॥ 25 ॥
Just as Viṣṇu with Lakṣmī and Lakṣmī with Viṣṇu, just as the night with the moon and the moon with the night.

तथैव युवयोश्शोभा दांपत्यं च पुरस्कृतम् ॥ अतस्त्वं जगतः केतुर्विश्वकेतुर्भविष्यसि॥ २६ ॥
tathaiva yuvayozzobhA dAMpatyaM ca puraskRtam ॥ atastvaM jagataH keturvizvaketurbhaviSyasi॥ 26 ॥
So you two mutually illuminate each other and tend your matrimonial life. Hence you will be the banner of the universe, nay the banner of the whole cosmos.

जगद्धिताय वत्स त्वं मोहयस्व पिनाकिनम् ॥ यथाशु सुमनश्शंभुः कुर्य्याद्दारप्रतिग्रहम् ॥ २७ ॥
jagaddhitAya vatsa tvaM mohayasva pinAkinam ॥ yathAzu sumanazzaMbhuH kuryyAddArapratigraham ॥ 27 ॥
O dear one, you shall enchant Śiva for the benefit of the universe so that Śiva may be included to take a wife unto Himself.

विजने स्निग्धदेशे तु पर्वतेषु सरस्सु च ॥ यत्रयत्र प्रयातीशस्तत्र तत्रानया सह ॥ २८ ॥
vijane snigdhadeze tu parvateSu sarassu ca ॥ yatrayatra prayAtIzastatra tatrAnayA saha ॥ 28 ॥
In solitary and serene places—on mountains and near lakes, Wherever the Lord (Īśaḥ, i.e., Shiva) goes, there she (his consort) goes along with him.

मोहय त्वं यतात्मानं वनिताविमुखं हरम् ॥ त्वदृते विद्यते नान्यः कश्चिदस्य विमोहकः ॥ २९ ॥
mohaya tvaM yatAtmAnaM vanitAvimukhaM haram ॥ tvadRte vidyate nAnyaH kazcidasya vimohakaH ॥ 29 ॥
Delude that self-controlled Hara (Shiva), who is indifferent to women. Except for you, O goddess, there is no one else who can delude him.

भूते हरे सानुरागे भवतोपि मनोभव । शापोपशांतिर्भविता तस्मादात्महितं कुरु ॥ 2-2-8-३० ॥
bhUte hare sAnurAge bhavatopi manobhava । zApopazAMtirbhavitA tasmAdAtmahitaM kuru ॥ 2-2-8-30 ॥
O Kāma, it is only when Śiva falls in love that you will get redemption from the course. Hence do what is good for you.

सानुरागो वरारोहां यदीच्छति महेश्वरः ॥ तदा भवोपि योग्यार्यस्त्वां च संतारयिष्यति ॥ ३१ ॥
sAnurAgo varArohAM yadIcchati mahezvaraH ॥ tadA bhavopi yogyAryastvAM ca saMtArayiSyati ॥ 31 ॥
If Maheśvara desires the excellent-hipped woman with affection, then Bhava, who is worthy and noble, will also deliver you.

तस्माज्जायाद्वितीयस्त्वं यतस्व हरमोहने ॥ विश्वस्य भव केतुस्त्वं मोहयित्वा महेश्वरम् ॥३२॥
tasmAjjAyAdvitIyastvaM yatasva haramohane ॥ vizvasya bhava ketustvaM mohayitvA mahezvaram ॥32॥
Hence with your wife to help you, strive to captivate Śiva. Earn the laurels of the universe after charming Him.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इति श्रुत्वा वचो मे हि जनकस्य जगत्प्रभोः ॥ उवाच मन्मथस्तथ्यं तदा मां जगतां पतिम् ॥ ३३ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ iti zrutvA vaco me hi janakasya jagatprabhoH ॥ uvAca manmathastathyaM tadA mAM jagatAM patim ॥ 33 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words of mine, who am his father and the lord of the universe, Kāma spoke these words to me, the lord of all the worlds.

मन्मथ उवाच ॥ करिष्येहं तव विभो वचनाच्छंभुमोहनम् ॥ किं तु योषिन्महास्त्रं मे तत्कांतां भगवन् सृज ॥३४॥
manmatha uvAca ॥ kariSyehaM tava vibho vacanAcchaMbhumohanam ॥ kiM tu yoSinmahAstraM me tatkAMtAM bhagavan sRja ॥34॥
Kāma said: O lord, I shall cause the delusion of Śiva at your bidding; but my prime weapon is a woman. Hence O lord, you shall create a comely maiden.

मया संमोहिते शंभो यया तस्यानुमोहनम् ॥ कर्तव्यमधुना धातस्तत्रोपायं परं कुरु ॥ ३५ ॥
mayA saMmohite zaMbho yayA tasyAnumohanam ॥ kartavyamadhunA dhAtastatropAyaM paraM kuru ॥ 35 ॥
O creator, arrange for the way how Śiva has to be further enchanted after He has been deluded by me.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ एवंवादिनि कंदर्पे धाताहं स प्रजापतिः ॥ कया संमोहनीयोसाविति चिंतामयामहम् ॥ ३६ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ evaMvAdini kaMdarpe dhAtAhaM sa prajApatiH ॥ kayA saMmohanIyosAviti ciMtAmayAmaham ॥ 36 ॥
Brahmā said: When Kāma put forward this suggestion I, the creator, and the Prajāpati (Dakṣa) considered the matter: “By whom is he to be enamoured?”

ciMtAviSTasya me tasya niHzvAso yo vinissRtaH ॥ tasmAdvasaMtassaMjAtaH puSpavrAtavibhUSitaH ॥ 37 ॥
While I was agitated with this thought, I heaved a deep sigh from which Spring cropped fully bedecked with clusters of flowers.

zoNarAjIvasaMkAzaH phullatAmarasekSaNaH ॥ saMdhyoditAkhaMDazazipratimAsyassunAsikaH॥38॥
He was like a red lotus. His eyes resembled the full blown lotus. His face shone like the full moon rising at dusk. His nose was well-shapped.

zArGgavaccaraNAvarttazzyAmakuMcitamUrddhajaH॥ saMdhyAMzumAlisadRzaH kuDaladvayamaMDitaH ॥ 39 ॥
His feet were arched like a bow. His hair was dark and curly. He was decorated with two ear-rings. He looked bright as the morning sun.

प्रमत्तेभगतिः पीनायतदोरुन्नतांसकः ॥ कंबुग्रीवस्सुविस्तीर्णहृदयः पीनसन्मुखः ॥ 2-2-8-४० ॥
pramattebhagatiH pInAyatadorunnatAMsakaH ॥ kaMbugrIvassuvistIrNahRdayaH pInasanmukhaH ॥ 2-2-8-40 ॥
His gait was majestic like that of an elephant in its rut. His arms were long and stout. His shoulders were raised. His neck resembled the conch-shell. His chest was very broad. His face was plump and finely shaped.

sarvAMgasundaraH zyAmassampUrNassarvalakSaNaiH ॥ darzanIyatamassarvamohanaH kAmavarddhanaH ॥ 41 ॥
He was comely in appearance, dark-complexioned and endowed with all characteristic marks. He was very handsome to look at, capable of enchanting everyone and of heightening feelings of love.

Since he is the final cause for a permanent abode (after marriage) let him be known as Vasanta. His duty is to follow you and to delight all people.
