brahmovAca ॥ varaM dattvA mune tasmin zaMbhAvaMtarhite tadA ॥ saMdhyApyagacchattatraiva yatra medhAtithirmuniH ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: O sage, when Śiva vanished after granting her the boons, Sandhyā too went to the place where Medhātithi was performing sacrifice.

तत्र शंभोः प्रसादेन न केनाप्युपलक्षिता ॥ सस्मार वर्णिनं तं वै स्वोपदेशकरं तपः ॥ २ ॥
tatra zaMbhoH prasAdena na kenApyupalakSitA ॥ sasmAra varNinaM taM vai svopadezakaraM tapaH ॥ 2 ॥
She entered the sacrificial hall without being observed by anyone, thanks to Śiva’s favour. She recalled to her memory the brahmin boy who had instructed her in the procedure of penance.

वसिष्ठेन पुरा सा तु वर्णीभूत्वा महामुने ॥ उपदिष्टा तपश्चर्तुं वचनात्परमेष्ठिनः ॥ ३ ॥
vasiSThena purA sA tu varNIbhUtvA mahAmune ॥ upadiSTA tapazcartuM vacanAtparameSThinaH ॥ 3 ॥
O great sage, at the bidding of Brahmā, Vasiṣṭha had assumed the guise of a brahmin boy and instructed her in the rites of penance.

तस्याः पुरोडाशमयं शरीरं तत्क्षणात्ततः ॥ दग्धं पुरोडाशगंधं तस्तार यदलक्षितम् ॥६॥
tasyAH puroDAzamayaM zarIraM tatkSaNAttataH ॥ dagdhaM puroDAzagaMdhaM tastAra yadalakSitam ॥6॥
Her body itself had become sacrificial offering in that sacrifice. When it was burnt it could not be distinguished from the ordinary Puroḍāśā since it too had the same fragrance.

वह्निस्तस्याः शरीरं तु दग्ध्वा सूर्यस्य मंडलम् ॥ शुद्धं प्रवेशयामास शंभोरेवाज्ञया पुनः ॥७॥
vahnistasyAH zarIraM tu dagdhvA sUryasya maMDalam ॥ zuddhaM pravezayAmAsa zaMbhorevAjJayA punaH ॥7॥
At the bidding of Śiva, the god of fire sent forth her body to the pure zone of the sun.

सूर्यो त्र्यर्थं विभज्याथ तच्छरीरं तदा रथे ॥ स्वकेशं स्थापयामास प्रीतये पितृदेवयोः ॥८॥
sUryo tryarthaM vibhajyAtha taccharIraM tadA rathe ॥ svakezaM sthApayAmAsa prItaye pitRdevayoH ॥8॥
The sun severed her body into two halves and placed the same on his own chariot for the propitiation of the Pitṛs and the Devas.

तदूर्द्ध्वभागस्तस्यास्तु शरीरस्य मुनीश्वर॥ प्रातस्संध्याभवत्सा तु अहोरात्रादिमध्यगा।९।
tadUrddhvabhAgastasyAstu zarIrasya munIzvara॥ prAtassaMdhyAbhavatsA tu ahorAtrAdimadhyagA।9।
O great sage, the upper half of her body became the Prātaḥ Sandhyā (dawn) which is at the beginning or in the middle of a day and night.

तच्छेषभागस्तस्यास्तु अहोरात्रांतमध्यगा ॥ सा सायमभवत्संध्या पितृप्रीतिप्रदा सदा ॥2-2-7-१ ०॥
taccheSabhAgastasyAstu ahorAtrAMtamadhyagA ॥ sA sAyamabhavatsaMdhyA pitRprItipradA sadA ॥2-2-7-1 0॥
The lower half of her body became the Sāyaṃsandhyā (dusk) which is in the middle of a day and night. The period is always pleasing to the manes.

सूर्योदयात्तु प्रथमं यदा स्यादरुणोदयः ॥ प्रातस्संध्या तदोदेति देवानां प्रीतिकारिणी ॥ ११ ॥
sUryodayAttu prathamaM yadA syAdaruNodayaH ॥ prAtassaMdhyA tadodeti devAnAM prItikAriNI ॥ 11 ॥
Before the sunrise, when the day breaks, the period is called Prātaḥsandhyā. It delights the Gods.

अस्तं गते ततः सूर्य्ये शोणपद्मनिभे सदा ॥ उदेति सायं संध्यापि पितॄणां मोदकारिणी ॥१२॥
astaM gate tataH sUryye zoNapadmanibhe sadA ॥ udeti sAyaM saMdhyApi pitRRNAM modakAriNI ॥12॥
When the sun has set and assumed the hue of a red lotus, the period of Sāyaṃsandhyā sets in. It is delightful to the manes.

तस्याः प्राणास्तु मनसा शंभुनाथ दयालुना ॥ दिव्येन तु शरीरेण चक्रिरे हि शरीरिणः ॥१३॥
tasyAH prANAstu manasA zaMbhunAtha dayAlunA ॥ divyena tu zarIreNa cakrire hi zarIriNaH ॥13॥
Śiva the merciful, created embodied beings with her vital airs, mind and the divine body.

मुनेर्यज्ञावसाने तु संप्राप्ते मुनिना तु सा ॥ प्राप्ता पुत्री वह्निमध्ये तप्तकांचनसुप्रभा ॥ १४ ॥
muneryajJAvasAne tu saMprApte muninA tu sA ॥ prAptA putrI vahnimadhye taptakAMcanasuprabhA ॥ 14 ॥
At the end of the sacrifice, the sage found his daughter in the sacrificial pit shining lustrously like heated gold.

तां जग्राह तदा पुत्रीं मुनुरामोदसंयुतः ॥ यज्ञार्थं तान्तु संस्नाप्य निजक्रोडे दधौ मुने ॥ १५ ॥
tAM jagrAha tadA putrIM munurAmodasaMyutaH ॥ yajJArthaM tAntu saMsnApya nijakroDe dadhau mune ॥ 15 ॥
With very great delight the sage took up the daughter, O sage, as though she were a sacrificial article. He bathed her and kept her on his lap.

अरुंधती तु तस्यास्तु नाम चक्रे महामुनिः ॥ शिष्यैः परिवृतस्तत्र महामोदमवाप ह ॥ १६ ॥
aruMdhatI tu tasyAstu nAma cakre mahAmuniH ॥ ziSyaiH parivRtastatra mahAmodamavApa ha ॥ 16 ॥
The great sage gave her the name Arundhatī. Surrounded by his disciples he celebrated the event joyously.

विरुणद्धि यतो धर्मं सा कस्मादपि कारणात् ॥ अतस्त्रिलोके विदितं नाम संप्राप तत्स्वयम् ॥१७॥
viruNaddhi yato dharmaM sA kasmAdapi kAraNAt ॥ atastriloke viditaM nAma saMprApa tatsvayam ॥17॥
The word Arundhatī means “one who does not hinder sacred rites in any manner whatsoever”. She acquired this name which later on became well-known in the three worlds.

यज्ञं समाप्य स मुनिः कृतकृत्यभावमासाद्य संपदयुतस्तनया प्रलंभात् ॥ तस्मिन्निजाश्रमपदे सह शिष्यवर्गैस्तामेव सततमसौ दयिते सुरर्षे ॥१८॥
yajJaM samApya sa muniH kRtakRtyabhAvamAsAdya saMpadayutastanayA pralaMbhAt ॥ tasminnijAzramapade saha ziSyavargaistAmeva satatamasau dayite surarSe ॥18॥
O celestial sage, that sage concluded the sacrifice with great contentment and was delighted at the acquisition of a daughter. He spent his days in the same hermitage along with his disciples, tending the daughter, mercifully.

अथ सा ववृधे देवी तस्मिन्मुनिवराश्रमे ॥ चन्द्रभागानदीतीरे तापसारण्यसंज्ञके ॥ १९ ॥
atha sA vavRdhe devI tasminmunivarAzrame ॥ candrabhAgAnadItIre tApasAraNyasaMjJake ॥ 19 ॥
The divine lady grew up in the hermitage, Tāpasāraṇya, on the banks of the river—Candrabhāgā.

संप्राप्ते पञ्चमे वर्षे चन्द्रभागां तदा गुणैः ॥ तापसारण्यमपि सा पवित्रमकरोत्सती ॥2-2-7-२०॥
saMprApte paJcame varSe candrabhAgAM tadA guNaiH ॥ tApasAraNyamapi sA pavitramakarotsatI ॥2-2-7-20॥
When she reached her fifth year, the chaste lady sanctified the environs of the Tāpasāraṇya and the river Candrabhāgā, by virtue of her good qualities.

विवाहं कारयामासुस्तस्या ब्रह्मसुतेन वै ॥ वसिष्ठेन ह्यरुंधत्या ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेश्वराः ॥२१॥
vivAhaM kArayAmAsustasyA brahmasutena vai ॥ vasiSThena hyaruMdhatyA brahmaviSNumahezvarAH ॥21॥
Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva got her marriage celebrated with Vasiṣṭha, the son of Brahmā.

तद्विवाहे महोत्साहो वभूव सुखवर्द्धनः॥ सर्वे सुराश्च मुनयस्सुखमापुः परं मुनो।२२॥
tadvivAhe mahotsAho vabhUva sukhavarddhanaH॥ sarve surAzca munayassukhamApuH paraM muno।22॥
O sage, great festivities in the marriage ceremony increased happiness. The sages and the Gods were very happy on that account.

ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशानां करनिस्सृततोयतः ॥ सप्तनद्यस्समुत्पन्नाश्शिप्राद्यास्सुपवित्रकाः ॥ २३ ॥
brahmaviSNumahezAnAM karanissRtatoyataH ॥ saptanadyassamutpannAzziprAdyAssupavitrakAH ॥ 23 ॥
From the water oozing from the hands of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva, the seven holy rivers Śiprā and others rose and flowed.

aruMdhatI mahAsAdhvI sAdhvInAM pravarottamA ॥ vasiSThaM prApya saMreje medhAtithisutA mune ॥ 24 ॥
O sage, Arundhatī, the daughter of Medhātithi, the greatest of all chaste ladies shone all the more on attaining Vasiṣṭha.

यस्याः पुत्रास्समुत्पन्नाः श्रेष्ठाश्शक्त्यादयश्शुभाः ॥ वसिष्ठं प्राप्य तं कांतं संरेजे मुनिसत्तमाः ॥ २५ ॥
yasyAH putrAssamutpannAH zreSThAzzaktyAdayazzubhAH ॥ vasiSThaM prApya taM kAMtaM saMreje munisattamAH ॥ 25 ॥
O excellent sage, she secured Vasiṣṭha and bore the auspicious sons Śakti etc.

एवं संध्याचरित्रं ते कथितं मुनिसत्तम ॥ पवित्रं पावनं दिव्यं सर्वकामफलप्रदम् ॥ २६ ॥
evaM saMdhyAcaritraM te kathitaM munisattama ॥ pavitraM pAvanaM divyaM sarvakAmaphalapradam ॥ 26 ॥
O excellent sage, I have narrated to you the story of Sandhyā. It is holy, sanctifying, divine and bestower of all benefits.

य इदं शृणुयान्नारी पुरुषो वा शुभव्रतः ॥ सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ २७ ॥
ya idaM zRNuyAnnArI puruSo vA zubhavrataH ॥ sarvAnkAmAnavApnoti nAtra kAryA vicAraNA ॥ 27 ॥
He or she who hears this story accompanied by auspicious rites attains all cherished desires. There is no doubt about it.
