brahmovAca ॥ sutavarya mahAprAjJa zRNu saMdhyAtapo mahat ॥ yacchrutvA nazyate pApasamUhastatkSaNAddhruvam ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: O best of my sons, O intelligent one, listen to the description of the great penance of Sandhyā on hearing which sins are quelled instantly.

upavizya tapobhAvaM vasiSThe svagRhaM gate ॥ saMdhyApi tapaso bhAvaM jJAtvA modamavApa ha ॥ 2 ॥
When Vasiṣṭha went back to his abode after instructing her in the rites of penance, Sandhyā was greatly pleased on learning the procedure of penance.

tatassAnaMdamanaso veSaM kRtvA tu yAdRzam ॥ tapazcartuM samArebhe bRhallohitatIragA ॥ 3 ॥
On the bank of the lake Bṛhallohita she began to perform penance after she had put on the dress of a person of blissful mind.

यथोक्तं तु वशिष्ठेन मंत्रं तपसि साधनम् ॥ मंत्रेण तेन सद्भक्त्या पूजयामास शंकरम् ॥४॥
yathoktaM tu vaziSThena maMtraM tapasi sAdhanam ॥ maMtreNa tena sadbhaktyA pUjayAmAsa zaMkaram ॥4॥
She worshipped Śiva with the mantra taught by Vasiṣṭha as the adjunct of penance in the manner explained by him.

ekAntamanasastasyAH kurvaMtyA sumahattapaH ॥ zaMbhau vinyastacittAyA gatamekaM caturyugam ॥ 5 ॥
A period of four Yugas elapsed during which she continued her great penance with mind fixed and duly concentrated on Śiva.

प्रसन्नोभूत्तदा शंभुस्तपसा तेन तोषितः ॥ अंतर्बहिस्तथाकाशे दर्शयित्वा निजं वपुः ॥ ६ ॥
prasannobhUttadA zaMbhustapasA tena toSitaH ॥ aMtarbahistathAkAze darzayitvA nijaM vapuH ॥ 6 ॥
Propitiated by her penance Śiva was greatly delighted. He revealed Himself to her within and without as well as in the heaven.

Śiva became visible to her in the form in which she was meditating upon him.

atha sA purato dRSTvA manasA ciMtitaM prabhum ॥ prasannavadanaM zAMtaM mumodAtIva zaMkaram ॥8॥
She rejoiced much on seeing in front of her, the lord Śiva with face beaming with delight, in the same form as she was meditating on.

ससाध्वसमहं वक्ष्ये किं कथं स्तौमि वा हरम् ॥ इति चिंतापरा भूत्वा न्यमीलयत चक्षुषी ॥ ९ ॥
sasAdhvasamahaM vakSye kiM kathaM staumi vA haram ॥ iti ciMtAparA bhUtvA nyamIlayata cakSuSI ॥ 9 ॥
“What shall I say? How shall I eulogise?” in this agitation she closed her eyes with fear.

निमीलिताक्ष्यास्तस्यास्तु प्रविश्य हृदयं हरः ॥ दिव्यं ज्ञानं ददौ तस्यै वाचं दिव्ये च चक्षुषी ॥2-2-6-१०॥
nimIlitAkSyAstasyAstu pravizya hRdayaM haraH ॥ divyaM jJAnaM dadau tasyai vAcaM divye ca cakSuSI ॥2-2-6-10॥
As she remained with eyes shut, Śiva entered her heart and blessed her with divine wisdom, divine speech and divine eyes.

दिव्यज्ञानं दिव्यचक्षुर्दिव्या वाचमवाप सा ॥ प्रत्यक्षं वीक्ष्य दुर्गेशं तुष्टाव जगतां पतिम् ॥११॥
divyajJAnaM divyacakSurdivyA vAcamavApa sA ॥ pratyakSaM vIkSya durgezaM tuSTAva jagatAM patim ॥11॥
She thus acquired divine wisdom, divine eyes and divine speech. Directly pereciving the lord of Durgā she eulogised the lord of the worlds.

संध्योवाच ॥ निराकारं ज्ञानगम्यं परं यन्नैव स्थूलं नापि सूक्ष्मं न चोच्चम् ॥ अंतश्चिंत्यं योगिभिस्तस्य रूपं तस्मै तुभ्यं लोककर्त्रे नमोस्तु ॥ १२ ॥
saMdhyovAca ॥ nirAkAraM jJAnagamyaM paraM yannaiva sthUlaM nApi sUkSmaM na coccam ॥ aMtazciMtyaM yogibhistasya rUpaM tasmai tubhyaM lokakartre namostu ॥ 12 ॥
Sandhyā said: That which has no specific form, that which can be known through perfect knowledge; that which is neither gross, nor subtle, nor high; that which is to be meditated upon by Yogins within themselves—obeisance be to Thee who art of this sort and the creator of the worlds.

सर्वं शांतं निर्मलं निर्विकारं ज्ञानागम्यं स्वप्रकाशेऽविकारम् ॥ खाध्वप्रख्यं ध्वांतमार्गात्परस्तद्रूपं यस्य त्वां नमामि प्रसन्नम् ॥ १३ ॥
sarvaM zAMtaM nirmalaM nirvikAraM jJAnAgamyaM svaprakAze'vikAram ॥ khAdhvaprakhyaM dhvAMtamArgAtparastadrUpaM yasya tvAM namAmi prasannam ॥ 13 ॥
I bow to Thee, lord Śiva, whose form is like a road to heaven, beyond the path of darkness, and who art calm, pure, changeless incomprehensible through worldly knowledge, self-illuminated and unaltered.

एकं शुद्धं दीप्यमानं तथाजं चिदानंदं सहजं चाविकारि ॥ नित्यानंदं सत्यभूतिप्रसन्नं यस्य श्रीदं रूपमस्मै नमस्ते ॥ १४ ॥
ekaM zuddhaM dIpyamAnaM tathAjaM cidAnaMdaM sahajaM cAvikAri ॥ nityAnaMdaM satyabhUtiprasannaM yasya zrIdaM rUpamasmai namaste ॥ 14 ॥
Obeisance to Thee whose form is solitary, pure, luminous, free from illusion, knowledge-cum-bliss, naturally undecaying, eternal bliss, delighted at the outcome of truth and prosperity and productive of glory.

विद्याकारोद्भावनीयं प्रभिन्नं सत्त्वच्छंदं ध्येयमात्मस्वरूपम् ॥ सारं पारं पावनानां पवित्रं तस्मै रूपं यस्य चैवं नमस्ते ॥ १५ ॥
vidyAkArodbhAvanIyaM prabhinnaM sattvacchaMdaM dhyeyamAtmasvarUpam ॥ sAraM pAraM pAvanAnAM pavitraM tasmai rUpaM yasya caivaM namaste ॥ 15 ॥
Obeisance to Thee whose form can be imagined in the nature of Vidyā (Perfect Knowledge), which is different from insentient things, Sāttvika in will, that which should be meditated on as the form of Ātman, which is the utmost essence and which is the holiest of all sanctifying objects.

यत्त्वाकारं शुद्धरूपं मनोज्ञं रत्नाकल्पं स्वच्छकर्पूरगौरम् ॥ इष्टाभीती शूलमुंडे दधानं हस्तैर्नमो योगयुक्ताय तुभ्यम् ॥१६॥
yattvAkAraM zuddharUpaM manojJaM ratnAkalpaM svacchakarpUragauram ॥ iSTAbhItI zUlamuMDe dadhAnaM hastairnamo yogayuktAya tubhyam ॥16॥
Obeisance to Thee, the Yogin whose Saguṇa form is pure, lovely, bedecked in jewels, as white and clean as camphor and which holds in its hand the desired boon, fearlessness, the trident and the scalp.

गगनं भूर्दिशश्चैव सलिलं ज्योतिरेव च ॥ पुनः कालश्च रूपाणि यस्य तुभ्यं नमोस्तु ते ॥ १७ ॥
gaganaM bhUrdizazcaiva salilaM jyotireva ca ॥ punaH kAlazca rUpANi yasya tubhyaM namostu te ॥ 17 ॥
Obeisance to Thee whose forms are the sky, the earth, the quarters, the waters, the fire and the Eternal time.

प्रधानपुरुषौ यस्य कायत्वेन विनिर्गतौ ॥ तस्मादव्यक्तरूपाय शंकराय नमोनमः ॥ १८ ॥
pradhAnapuruSau yasya kAyatvena vinirgatau ॥ tasmAdavyaktarUpAya zaMkarAya namonamaH ॥ 18 ॥
Obeisance, obeisance to Śiva of unmanifest form from whom unmanifest primordial nature and Puruṣa issued forth as its effect.

यो ब्रह्मा कुरुते सृष्टिं यो विष्णुः कुरुते स्थितिम् ॥ संहरिष्यति यो रुद्रस्तस्मै तुभ्यं नमोनमः ॥१९॥
yo brahmA kurute sRSTiM yo viSNuH kurute sthitim ॥ saMhariSyati yo rudrastasmai tubhyaM namonamaH ॥19॥
Obeisance, obeisance to Thee who createst this universe in the form of Brahmā, who sustainest it in the form of Viṣṇu and who destroyest it in the form of Rudra.

नमोनमः कारणकारणाय दिव्यामृतज्ञानविभूतिदाय॥ समस्तलोकांतरभूतिदाय प्रकाशरूपाय परात्पराय ॥ 2-2-6-२० ॥
namonamaH kAraNakAraNAya divyAmRtajJAnavibhUtidAya॥ samastalokAMtarabhUtidAya prakAzarUpAya parAtparAya ॥ 2-2-6-20 ॥
Obeisance, obeisance to the cause of causes, to the bestower of divine nectar, wisdom and prosperity; to the best-ower of the prosperity of all other worlds, and the luminous greatest of the great.

यस्याऽपरं नो जगदुच्यते पदात् क्षितिर्दिशस्सूर्य इंदुर्मनौजः ॥ बर्हिर्मुखा नाभितश्चान्तरिक्षं तस्मै तुभ्यं शंभवे मे नमोस्तु ॥ २१ ॥
yasyA'paraM no jagaducyate padAt kSitirdizassUrya iMdurmanaujaH ॥ barhirmukhA nAbhitazcAntarikSaM tasmai tubhyaM zaMbhave me namostu ॥ 21 ॥
Obeisance to Thee, Śiva, beyond whose region no other world exists; from whose umbilical region arose the earth, the quarters, the sun, the moon, the cupid, the devas and the ether.

त्वं परः परमात्मा च त्वं विद्या विविधा हरः ॥ सद्ब्रह्म च परं ब्रह्म विचारणपरायणः ॥२२॥
tvaM paraH paramAtmA ca tvaM vidyA vividhA haraH ॥ sadbrahma ca paraM brahma vicAraNaparAyaNaH ॥22॥
Thou art, the greatest supreme soul. Thou art Śiva, the various lores, the pure Brahman, the supreme Brahman and the utmost object of deliberation.

यस्य नादिर्न मध्यं च नांतमस्ति जगद्यतः ॥ कथं स्तोष्यामि तं देवं वाङ्मनोगोचरं हरम्॥ ॥ २३ ॥
yasya nAdirna madhyaM ca nAMtamasti jagadyataH ॥ kathaM stoSyAmi taM devaM vAGmanogocaraM haram॥ ॥ 23 ॥
How can I adequately eulogise lord Śiva who is inexpressible by words, is incomprehensible to the mind, is the cause of the world and has no beginning, no middle, no end.

यस्य ब्रह्मादयो देव मुनयश्च तपोधनाः ॥ न विप्रण्वंति रूपाणि वर्णनीयः कथं स मे ॥ २४ ॥
yasya brahmAdayo deva munayazca tapodhanAH ॥ na vipraNvaMti rUpANi varNanIyaH kathaM sa me ॥ 24 ॥
How can he be described by me, whose forms even Brahmā and other Gods or sages of great austerity cannot describe.

स्त्रिया मया ते किं ज्ञेया निर्गुणस्य गुणाः प्रभो ॥ नैव जानंति यद्रूपं सेन्द्रा अपि सुरासुराः ॥ २५ ॥
striyA mayA te kiM jJeyA nirguNasya guNAH prabho ॥ naiva jAnaMti yadrUpaM sendrA api surAsurAH ॥ 25 ॥
O lord, Thou art attributeless. How can Thy attributes be known to me, a mere woman? Even the Gods including Indra and Asuras do not know it.

namastubhyaM mahezAna namastubhyaM tamomaya ॥ prasIda zaMbho deveza bhUyobhUyo namostu te ॥ 26 ॥
Obeisance to Thee, O Lord Śiva, obeisance to Thee, O personification of penance; O Śiva, lord of the Gods, be pleased, obeisance be to Thee again and again.

brahmovAca ॥ ityAkarNya vacastasyAssaMstutaH paramezvaraH ॥ suprasannatarazcAbhUcchaMkaro bhaktavatsalaH ॥ 27 ॥
Brahmā said: Being thus eulogised and having heard her words Śiva favourably disposed to the devotees became highly pleased.

अथ तस्याश्शरीरं तु वल्कलाजिनसंयुतम् ॥ परिच्छन्नं जटाव्रातैः पवित्रे मूर्ध्नि राजितैः ॥ २८ ॥
atha tasyAzzarIraM tu valkalAjinasaMyutam ॥ paricchannaM jaTAvrAtaiH pavitre mUrdhni rAjitaiH ॥ 28 ॥
Her body originally clad in barks of trees and deer-hide had by this time been completely covered by clusters of matted hair hanging down from the head.

हिमानीतर्जितांभोजसदृशं वदनं तदा ॥ निरीक्ष्य कृपयाविष्टो हरः प्रोवाच तामिदम् ॥२९॥
himAnItarjitAMbhojasadRzaM vadanaM tadA ॥ nirIkSya kRpayAviSTo haraH provAca tAmidam ॥29॥
Her face appeared like a lotus threatened by frost. On seeing her Śiva melted with pity and said to her.

mahezvara uvAca ॥ prItosmi tapasA bhadre bhavatyAH parameNa vai ॥ stavena ca zubhaprAjJe varaM varaya sAMpratam ॥ 2-2-6-30 ॥
Śiva said: O gentle lady, I am delighted by your great penance and this eulogy. O auspiciously intelligent woman, you can choose your boon.

येन ते विद्यते कार्यं वरेणास्मिन्मनोगतम् ॥ तत्करिष्ये च भद्रं ते प्रसन्नोहं तव व्रतैः ॥ ३१ ॥
yena te vidyate kAryaM vareNAsminmanogatam ॥ tatkariSye ca bhadraM te prasannohaM tava vrataiH ॥ 31 ॥
Whatever boon seems to be useful to you and is desired by you I shall grant it to you. I am delighted by your rites.

brahmovAca ॥ iti zrutvA mahezasya prasannamanasastadA ॥ saMdhyovAca suprasannA praNamya ca muhurmuhuH ॥ 32 ॥
Brahmā said: On hearing these words of Śiva who was delighted, Sandhyā was highly pleased and she said after repeated obeisance.

संध्योवाच ॥ ॥ यदि देयो वरः प्रीत्या वरयोग्यास्म्यहं यदि ॥ यदि शुद्धास्म्यहं जाता तस्मात्पापान्महेश्वर॥३३॥
saMdhyovAca ॥ ॥ yadi deyo varaH prItyA varayogyAsmyahaM yadi ॥ yadi zuddhAsmyahaM jAtA tasmAtpApAnmahezvara॥33॥
O Lord Śiva, if I am to be favoured with the boon, if I am considered worthy of receiving a boon, if I am purified of that sin,॥ then grant me these boons॥.

यदि देव प्रसव्रोऽसि तपसा मम सांप्रतम् ॥ वृतस्तदायं प्रथमो वरो मम विधीयताम् ॥३४॥
yadi deva prasavro'si tapasA mama sAMpratam ॥ vRtastadAyaM prathamo varo mama vidhIyatAm ॥34॥
if the lord is delighted with my penance, let the first boon chosen by me be granted.

utpannamAtrA deveza prANinosminnabhaH sthale ॥ na bhavaMtu samenaiva sakAmAssaMbhavaMtu vai ॥35॥
Let no living being, O lord of the Gods, born in this atmosphere be full of lust at the time of its nativity.

यद्धि वृत्ता हि लोकेषु त्रिष्वपि प्रथिता यथा ॥ भविष्यामि तथा नान्या वर एको वृतो मया ॥ ३६ ॥
yaddhi vRttA hi lokeSu triSvapi prathitA yathA ॥ bhaviSyAmi tathA nAnyA vara eko vRto mayA ॥ 36 ॥
This is another boon chosen by me that no other woman shall become so famous in the three worlds as I have become or shall become.

सकामा मम सृष्टिस्तु कुत्रचिन्न पतिष्यति ॥ यो मे पतिर्भवेन्नाथ सोपि मेऽतिसुहृच्च वै ॥ ३७ ॥
sakAmA mama sRSTistu kutracinna patiSyati ॥ yo me patirbhavennAtha sopi me'tisuhRcca vai ॥ 37 ॥
No creation of mine shall become lustful or fall anywhere degraded. He who becomes my husband shall be my intimate friend of pure mind.

यो द्रक्ष्यति सकामो मां पुरुषस्तस्य पौरुषम् ॥ नाशं गमिष्यति तदा स च क्लीबो भविष्यति ॥।३८॥
yo drakSyati sakAmo mAM puruSastasya pauruSam ॥ nAzaM gamiSyati tadA sa ca klIbo bhaviSyati ॥।38॥
Any person who looks at me with lustful eyes shall lose his manliness and become a eunuch.

On hearing the words of that woman who had become freed of sin Śiva who is favourably disposed to His devotees and who was delighted at what she had said, spoke as follows.

Maheśvara said: O lady Sandhyā, listen. Your sin has been reduced to ashes. I have abandoned my anger towards you. By this penance you have become pure.

O gentle lady Sandhyā, whatever you have asked I grant you entirely. I am delighted by this excellent penance of yours.

prathamaM zaizavo bhAvaH kaumArAkhyo dvitIyakaH ॥ tRtIyo yauvano bhAvazcaturtho vArddhakastathA ॥42॥
(In all living beings) the first stage shall be infancy, the second childhood, the third youth and the fourth stage shall be old age.

tRtIye tvatha saMprApte vayobhAge zarIriNaH॥ sakAmAssyurdvitIyAMto bhaviSyati kvacit kvacit ॥ 43 ॥
When the third stage in life is reached, the living beings shall become lustful. In some cases it shall be at the end of the second stage.

This new limitation is imposed by me as a result of your penance. No living being shall be lustful at the time of its nativity.

tvaM ca loke satIbhAvaM tAdRzaM samavApnuhi ॥ triSu lokeSu nAnyasyA yAdRzaM saMbhaviSyati ॥ 45 ॥
You will attain such a pure chastity as will not be attained by any other woman in the three worlds.

yaH pazyati sakAmastvAM pANigrAhamRte tava ॥ sa sadyaH klIbatAM prApya durbalatvaM gamiSyati ॥ 46 ॥
Excepting your husband whoever looks at you with lustful eyes shall immediately become impotent and weak.

Your husband shall be one endowed with great fortune, penance and comely features. He shall live for a period of seven Kalpas along with you.

Thus I have granted you all the boons requested by you. I shall tell you another incident that transpired in the previous birth.

agnau zarItyAgaste pUrvameva pratizrutaH ॥ tadupAyaM vadAmi tvAM tatkuruSva na saMzayaH ॥49॥
That you would cast off your body in the fire has been foretold. I shall tell you the means thereof. You will certainly carry it out.

Let that be performed by you at the twelve-year-sacrifice of the sage Medhātithi in the blazing sacrificial fire ere long.

In the ridge of this mountain, on the banks of this river Candrabhāgā, Medhātithi is performing a great penance in his hermitage.

If you have chosen in your mind a desirable bridegroom as your husband, you shall think of him while you consign your body into the fire.

O Sandhyā, while you were performing severe penance—which had lasted for four yugas—in the earlier part of Tretā Yuga, after the Kṛta Yuga had elapsed.

In the first part of the Tretā Yuga, Was born a daughter of Dakṣa. Endowed with eloquence, modesty, and virtue, She was married, as appropriate, to a worthy husband.

tanmadhye sa dadau kanyA vidhave saptaviMzatiH ॥ candro'nyAssaMparityajya rohiNyAM prItimAnabhUt ॥56॥
He gave twenty seven of his daughters to the moon in marriage. But the moon had a special liking for only Rohiṇī and he neglected others.

For that reason, when Chandra (the Moon) was cursed by the angry Dakṣa, At that time, all the gods gathered near you.

na dRSTAzca tvayA saMdhye te devA brahmaNA saha ॥ mayi vinyastamanasA khaM ca dRSTvA labhetpunaH ॥58॥
O Sandhyā, those gods along with Brahmā were not seen by you, Because your mind was absorbed in Me. One who sees the sky with a mind fixed on Me can attain (you) again.

चंद्रस्य शापमोक्षार्थं जाता चंद्रनदी तदा॥ सृष्टा धात्रा तदैवात्र मेधातिथिरुपस्थितः॥५९॥
caMdrasya zApamokSArthaM jAtA caMdranadI tadA॥ sRSTA dhAtrA tadaivAtra medhAtithirupasthitaH॥59॥
For the removal of Chandra’s curse, the Candranadī (Moon River) came into being at that time. It was created by Dhātrā (the Creator, i.e., Brahmā), and at that very moment, Medhātithi also appeared there.

tapasA satsamo nAsti na bhUto na bhaviSyati॥ yena yajJassamArabdho jyotiSTomo mahAvidhiH॥2-2-6-60॥
There is none equal to him in penance. There has never been such a person, nor will there ever be one. He has now started the sacrifice of Jyotiṣṭoma of many great rites.

In that blazing sacrificial fire you shall cast off your body. You are pure now. May your other desires be also fulfilled.

etanmayA sthApitante kAryArthaM bho tapasvini॥ tatkuruSva mahAbhAge yAhi yajJe mahAmuneH । tasyAhitaM ca devezastatraivAMtaradhIyata॥62॥
O Hermitess, these things have been ordained by me for my own end. O fortunate woman, do as I instruct you. Go to the sacrifice of that sage.Thus after instructing her for her welfare the lord vanished from the scene.
