sUta uvAca॥ ityAkarNya vacastasya brahmaNo munisattamaH ॥ sa mudovAca saMsmRtya zaMkaraM prItamAnasaH ॥ 1 ॥
On hearing these words of Brahmā, the excellent sage remembered Śiva with a delighted heart and spoke joyfully.

nArada uvAca ॥ ॥ brahman vidhe mahAbhAga viSNuziSya mahAmate ॥ adbhutA kathitA lIlA tvayA ca zazimaulinaH ॥ 2 ॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, the fortunate disciple of Viṣṇu, O intelligent one, you have narrated the wonderful divine sports of the moon-crested lord.

गृहीतदारे मदने हृष्टे हि स्वगृहे गते ॥ दक्षे च स्वगृहं याते तथा हि त्वयि कर्तरि ॥ ३ ॥
gRhItadAre madane hRSTe hi svagRhe gate ॥ dakSe ca svagRhaM yAte tathA hi tvayi kartari ॥ 3 ॥
After Kāma had married and gone to his residence when all of you, i.e. you the creator.

mAnaseSu ca putreSu gateSu svasvadhAmasu ॥ saMdhyA kutra gatA sA ca brahmaputrI pitRprasUH ॥ 4 ॥
Dakṣa and the mental sons, had all gone to your respective abodes, where did Sandhyā, the daughter of Brahmā and the mother of the Pitṛs go?

What did she do? Who married her? Please tell me all about it and particularly the account related to Sandhyā.

Sūta said:On hearing these words of his intelligent son, Brahmā, who knew the real situation, remembered Śiva and said:

brahmovAca ॥ zRNu tvaM ca mune sarvaM saMdhyAyAzcaritaM zubham ॥ yacchrutvA sarvakAminyassAdhvyassyussarvadA mune ॥ 7 ॥
Brahmā said: O sage, listen to the auspicious story of Sandhyā, on hearing which ladies do always become chaste.

सा च संध्या सुता मे हि मनोजाता पुराऽ भवत् ॥ तपस्तप्त्वा तनुं त्यक्त्वा सैव जाता त्वरुंधती ॥८॥
sA ca saMdhyA sutA me hi manojAtA purA' bhavat ॥ tapastaptvA tanuM tyaktvA saiva jAtA tvaruMdhatI ॥8॥
That Sandhyā was my daughter mentally created by me formerly. She performed a penance, cast off her body and was reborn as Arundhatī.

medhAtithessutA bhUtvA munizreSThasya dhImatI ॥ brahmaviSNumahezAnavacanAccaritavratA॥9॥
She was born as the intelligent daughter of the excellent sage Medhātithi, performed sacred rites at the bidding of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa .

vavre patiM mahAtmAnaM vasiSThaM zaMsitavratam ॥ pativratA ca mukhyA'bhUdvaMdyA pUjyA tvabhISaNA॥2-2-5-10॥
She chose as her husband the noble-souled Vasiṣṭha of praiseworthy rites. She of auspicious countenance became the foremost of chaste ladies and deserved honour and respect from everyone,

nArada uvAca॥ kathaM tayA tapastaptaM kimarthaM kutra saMdhyayA॥ kathaM zarIraM sA tyaktvA'bhavanmedhAtitheH sutA॥11॥
How did she perform penance? Why and where? How did she cast off her body and become the daughter of Medhātithi?

kathaM vA vihitaM devairbrahmaviSNuzivaiH patim। vasiSThaM tu mahAtmAnaM saMvavre zaMsitavratam॥12॥
What did the deities Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Śiva command her to do? and how did she choose the noble-souled Vasiṣṭha of praiseworthy rites as her husband?

etanme zroSyamANAya vistareNa pitAmaha॥ kautUhalamaruMdhatyAzcaritaM brUhi tattvataH ॥13॥ ।
I am eager to hear all these things. O Grand Father, tell me in detail the story of Sandhyā precisely.

brahmovAca ॥ ahaM svatanayAM saMdhyAM dRSTvA pUrvamathAtmanaH॥ kAmAyAzu mano'kArSaM tyaktvA zivabhayAcca sA ॥14॥
Brahmā said: Formerly on seeing Sandhyā, my daughter, I cherished a love for her, which, being afraid of Śiva, I forsook.

संध्यायाश्चलितं चित्तं कामबाणविलोडितम् ॥ ऋषीणामपि संरुद्धमानसानां महात्मनाम्॥१५॥
saMdhyAyAzcalitaM cittaM kAmabANaviloDitam ॥ RSINAmapi saMruddhamAnasAnAM mahAtmanAm॥15॥
Sandhyā’s mind too was shaken on being stirred by Kāma’s arrows. The same had happened with the mind of the noble-souled sages who had so far curbed their minds.

bhargasya vacanaM zrutvA sopahAsaM ca mAM prati ॥ AtmanazcalitatvaM vai hyamaryAdamRSInprati ॥16॥
he had heard the words of Śiva to me couched in mocking terms. She had realised that her mental aberration in regard to the sages was beyond decency.

कामस्य तादृशं भावं मुनिमोहकरं मुहुः॥ दृष्ट्वा संध्या स्वयं तत्रोपयमायातिदुःखिता॥ १७ ॥ ।
kAmasya tAdRzaM bhAvaM munimohakaraM muhuH॥ dRSTvA saMdhyA svayaM tatropayamAyAtiduHkhitA॥ 17 ॥ ।
She had seen the attitude of Kāma culminating in the delusion of the sages, frequently. Hence Sandhyā was excessively distressed with respect to her marriage.

ततस्तु ब्रह्मणा शप्ते मदने च मया मुने॥ अंतर्भूते मयि शिवे गते चापि निजास्पदे ॥१८॥
tatastu brahmaNA zapte madane ca mayA mune॥ aMtarbhUte mayi zive gate cApi nijAspade ॥18॥
O sage, then I cursed Kāma. Śiva left the place and I too disappeared. Thus her support was lost.

आमर्षवशमापन्ना सा संध्या मुनिसत्तम॥ मम पुत्री विचार्यैवं तदा ध्यानपराऽभवत् ॥ १९ ॥
AmarSavazamApannA sA saMdhyA munisattama॥ mama putrI vicAryaivaM tadA dhyAnaparA'bhavat ॥ 19 ॥
So, O excellent sage, Sandhyā became furious. Then, my daughter considered all these things and meditated.

dhyAyaMtI kSaNamevAzu pUrvaM vRttaM manasvinI ॥ idaM vimamRze saMdhyA tasminkAle yathocitam ॥ 2-2-5-20 ॥
Meditating on the recent events, she of great fortitude mused what befitted the situation.

संध्योवाच ॥ उत्पन्नमात्रां मां दृष्ट्वा युवतीं मदनेरितः ॥ अकार्षित्सानुरागोयमभिलाषं पिता मम ॥२१॥
saMdhyovAca ॥ utpannamAtrAM mAM dRSTvA yuvatIM madaneritaH ॥ akArSitsAnurAgoyamabhilASaM pitA mama ॥21॥
Sandhyā said: Seeing me as a lady in the prime of my youth even at my nativity, my father, prompted by Kāma, cherished a lustful desire for me.

पश्यतां मानसानां च मुनीनां भावितात्मनाम्॥ दृष्ट्वैव माममर्यादं सकाममभवन्मनः॥२२॥
pazyatAM mAnasAnAM ca munInAM bhAvitAtmanAm॥ dRSTvaiva mAmamaryAdaM sakAmamabhavanmanaH॥22॥
The minds of the sages, the mental sons, reputed to be pure in mind, on seeing me became lustful breaking the conventions.

ममापि मथितं चित्तं मदनेन दुरात्मना ॥ येन दृष्ट्वा मुनीन्सर्वांश्चलितं मन्मनो भृशम् ॥२३॥
mamApi mathitaM cittaM madanena durAtmanA ॥ yena dRSTvA munInsarvAMzcalitaM manmano bhRzam ॥23॥
My mind too was excessively stirred up by the wicked Kāma, as a result of which, on seeing those sages it too became excessively shaken.

फलमेतस्य पापस्य मदनस्स्वयमाप्तवान्॥ यस्तं शशाप कुपितः शंभोरग्रे पितामहः॥२४॥
phalametasya pApasya madanassvayamAptavAn॥ yastaM zazApa kupitaH zaMbhoragre pitAmahaH॥24॥
Of course Kāma reaped the fruits of his sinful misdeeds, for Brahmā became angry and cursed him in the presence of Śiva.

प्राप्नुयां फलमेतस्य पापस्य स्वघकारिणी ॥ तच्छोधनफलमहमाशु नेच्छामि साधनम् ॥२५॥
prApnuyAM phalametasya pApasya svaghakAriNI ॥ tacchodhanaphalamahamAzu necchAmi sAdhanam ॥25॥
I too shall have to reap the fruits of my sin. I have committed a great sin. I wish to have a means for making amends.

yanmAM pitA bhrAtarazca sakAmamaparokSataH ॥ dRSTvA cakrusspRhAM tasmAnna mattaH pApakRtparA ॥26॥
Directly perceiving that I too had lustful feelings, the brothers and my father had a similar desire. Hence I am the worst sinner.

mamApi kAmabhAvobhUdamaryAdaM samIkSya tAn ॥ patyA iva svaketAte sarveSu sahajeSvaSi॥27॥
I too had the unconventional lustful feelings on seeing them, towards my own father and brothers as towards a husband.

करिष्यारम्यस्य पापस्य प्रायश्चित्तमहं स्वयम्॥ आत्मानमग्नौ होष्यामि वेदमार्गानुसारत॥२८॥
kariSyAramyasya pApasya prAyazcittamahaM svayam॥ AtmAnamagnau hoSyAmi vedamArgAnusArata॥28॥
I shall perform expiatory rites myself for my sin. Following the Vedic injunctions I shall consign myself to the fire.

किं त्वेकां स्थापयिष्यामि मर्यादामिह भूतले ॥ उत्पन्नमात्रा न यथा सकामास्स्युश्शरीरिणः ॥ २९ ॥
kiM tvekAM sthApayiSyAmi maryAdAmiha bhUtale ॥ utpannamAtrA na yathA sakAmAssyuzzarIriNaH ॥ 29 ॥
But I shall set up the new limits in the world. No person shall be so lustful at the time of birth.

एतदर्थमहं कृत्वा तपः परम दारुणम् ॥ मर्यादां स्थापयिष्यामि पश्चात्त्यक्षामि जीवितम्॥2-2-5-३०॥
etadarthamahaM kRtvA tapaH parama dAruNam ॥ maryAdAM sthApayiSyAmi pazcAttyakSAmi jIvitam॥2-2-5-30॥
For this purpose I shall perform a severe penance. Then I shall establish the new limits and afterwards I shall abandon this life.

यस्मिञ्च्छरीरे पित्रा मे ह्यभिलाषस्स्वयं कृतः॥ भातृभिस्तेन कायेन किंचिन्नास्ति प्रयोजनम् ॥३१॥
yasmiJccharIre pitrA me hyabhilASassvayaM kRtaH॥ bhAtRbhistena kAyena kiMcinnAsti prayojanam ॥31॥
No purpose will be served with this body for which love was cherished by my father and brothers.

मया येन शरीरेण तातेषु सहजेषु च ॥ उद्भावितः कामभावो न तत्सुकृतसाधनम्॥३२॥
mayA yena zarIreNa tAteSu sahajeSu ca ॥ udbhAvitaH kAmabhAvo na tatsukRtasAdhanam॥32॥
This body cannot be the means for achieving merit, for, it was through this body that lustful feelings were generated in my father and brothers.

इति संचित्य मनसा संध्या शैलवरं ततः ॥ जगाम चन्द्रभागाख्यं चन्द्रभागापगा यतः ॥ ३३ ॥
iti saMcitya manasA saMdhyA zailavaraM tataH ॥ jagAma candrabhAgAkhyaM candrabhAgApagA yataH ॥ 33 ॥
Thinking thus in her mind, Sandhyā went to the mountain Candrabhāga from which the river Candrabhāgā flows.

अथ तत्र गतां ज्ञात्वा संध्यां गिरिवरं प्रति ॥ तपसे नियतात्मानं ब्रह्मावोचमहं सुतम् ॥ ३४ ॥
atha tatra gatAM jJAtvA saMdhyAM girivaraM prati ॥ tapase niyatAtmAnaM brahmAvocamahaM sutam ॥ 34 ॥
Then, knowing that Sandhyā had gone to the great mountain For penance, with a controlled and disciplined mind, I, Brahmā, spoke to my son.

वशिष्ठं संयतात्मानं सर्वज्ञं ज्ञानयोगिनम् ॥ समीपे स्वे समासीनं वेदवेदाङ्गपारगम् ॥३५॥
vaziSThaM saMyatAtmAnaM sarvajJaM jJAnayoginam ॥ samIpe sve samAsInaM vedavedAGgapAragam ॥35॥
I saw Vasiṣṭha, who had self-control, who was all-knowing, A yogi established in wisdom, Sitting nearby, A master of the Vedas and the Vedāṅgas.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ वसिष्ठ पुत्र गच्छ त्वं संध्यां जातां मनस्विनीम्॥ तपसे धृतकामां च दीक्षस्वैनां यथा विधि ॥३६॥
brahmovAca ॥ vasiSTha putra gaccha tvaM saMdhyAM jAtAM manasvinIm॥ tapase dhRtakAmAM ca dIkSasvainAM yathA vidhi ॥36॥
Brahmā said: O son Vasiṣṭha, approach Sandhyā, my daughter of great fortitude. She is desirous of performing a penance. Initiate her duly in the procedure of that.

मंदाक्षमभवत्तस्याः पुरा दृष्ट्वैव कामुकान्॥ युष्मान्मां च तथात्मानं सकामां मुनिसत्तम॥३७॥
maMdAkSamabhavattasyAH purA dRSTvaiva kAmukAn॥ yuSmAnmAM ca tathAtmAnaM sakAmAM munisattama॥37॥
O great sage, formerly seeing you all and me as her lovers and realising her own lustful feelings she had blushed.

अभूतपूर्वं तत्कर्म पूर्व मृत्युं विमृश्य सा ॥ युष्माकमात्मनश्चापि प्राणान्संत्यक्तुमिच्छति ॥३८॥
abhUtapUrvaM tatkarma pUrva mRtyuM vimRzya sA ॥ yuSmAkamAtmanazcApi prANAnsaMtyaktumicchati ॥38॥
Though not expressed and though not personified, your action then is considered by her as her first death. Now she wishes to put an end to her life.

समर्यादेषु मर्यादां तपसा स्थापयिष्यति ॥ तपः कर्तुं गता साध्वी चन्द्रभागाख्यभूधरे॥३९॥
samaryAdeSu maryAdAM tapasA sthApayiSyati ॥ tapaH kartuM gatA sAdhvI candrabhAgAkhyabhUdhare॥39॥
Among those who observe limits and conventions she wants to lay down a limitation. The chaste lady has gone to the mountain Candrabhāga for performing the penance.

न भावं तपसस्तात सानुजानाति कंचन॥ तस्माद्यथोपदेशात्सा प्राप्नोत्विष्टं तथा कुरु॥2-2-5-४०॥
na bhAvaM tapasastAta sAnujAnAti kaMcana॥ tasmAdyathopadezAtsA prApnotviSTaM tathA kuru॥2-2-5-40॥
She does not know the procedure of performing a penance. O dear, see that she realises her desire by means of your instructions.

इदं रूपं परित्यज्य निजं रूपांतरं मुने ॥ परिगृह्यांतिके तस्यास्तपश्चर्यां निदर्शयन् ॥ ४१ ॥
idaM rUpaM parityajya nijaM rUpAMtaraM mune ॥ parigRhyAMtike tasyAstapazcaryAM nidarzayan ॥ 41 ॥
O sage, abandon this form of yours. Disguise yourself and approach her to demonstrate the mode of penance.

इदं स्वरूपं भवतो दृष्ट्वा पूर्वं यथात्र वाम् ॥ नाप्नुयात्साऽथ किंचिद्वै ततो रूपांतरं कुरु ॥४२॥
idaM svarUpaM bhavato dRSTvA pUrvaM yathAtra vAm ॥ nApnuyAtsA'tha kiMcidvai tato rUpAMtaraM kuru ॥42॥
You shall assume another form lest she should be embarrassed as before on seeing your natural form and features.

brahmovAca ॥nAradetthaM vasiSTho me samAjJapto dayAvatA ॥ yathA'sviti ca mAM procya yayau saMdhyAMtikaM muniH ॥ 43 ॥
Brahmā said: O Nārada, Vasiṣṭha was thus ordered by me out of pity. The sage too told me “so be it” and approached Sandhyā.

tatra devasaraH pUrNaM guNairmAnasasaMmitam ॥ dadarza sa vasiSTotha saMdhyAM tattIragAmapi॥। 44 ॥
Vasiṣṭha saw the celestial lake full of Gaṇas and resembling the Mānasa lake. He saw Sandhyā too on its bank.

tIrasthayA tayA reje tatsaraH kamalojjvalam ॥ udyadiMdusunakSatra pradoSe gaganaM yathA ॥ 45 ॥
With her seated on its bank, the lake, full of splendid lotuses, appeared like the sky in the dusk with the moon rising and the stars twinkling.

munirdRSTvAtha tAM tatra susaMbhAvAM sa kautukI ॥ vIkSAMcakre sarastatra bRhallohitasaMjJakam ॥ 46 ॥
On seeing her there full of noble feelings, the sage eagerly looked at the lake called Bṛhallohita.

चन्द्रभागा नदी तस्मात्प्राकाराद्दक्षिणांबुधिम् ॥ यांती सा चैव ददृशे तेन सानुगिरेर्महत् ॥ ४७ ॥
candrabhAgA nadI tasmAtprAkArAddakSiNAMbudhim ॥ yAMtI sA caiva dadRze tena sAnugirermahat ॥ 47 ॥
From the ridges of that big mountain which appeared like a big fort wall, the river Candrabhāgā rose and flowed towards the Southern sea. The sage saw that too.

निर्भिद्य पश्चिमं सा तु चन्द्रभागस्य सा नदी ॥ यथा हिमवतो गंगा तथा गच्छति सागरम् ॥४८॥
nirbhidya pazcimaM sA tu candrabhAgasya sA nadI ॥ yathA himavato gaMgA tathA gacchati sAgaram ॥48॥
That river breaks the western wing of the mountain Candrabhāga even as Gaṅgā of the mountain Himālaya and flows towards the sea.

tasmin girau candrabhAge bRhallohitatIragAm ॥ saMdhyAM dRSTvAtha papraccha vasiSThassAdaraM tadA ॥49॥
Seeing Sandhyā on the bank of the lake Bṛhallohita on that mountain Candrabhāga, Vasiṣṭha asked her respectfully.

vaziSTha -uvAca ॥ kimarthamAgatA bhadre nirjanaM tvaM mahIdharam ॥ kasya vA tanayA kiM vA bhavatyApi cikIrSitam ॥ 2-2-5-50 ॥
Vasiṣṭha said: O good lady, why have you come to this mountain devoid of men? Whose daughter are you? What is it that you intend to do?

etadicchAmyahaM zrotuM vada guhyaM na cedbhavet ॥ vadanaM pUrNacandrAbhaM nizceSTaM vA kathaM tava ॥ 51 ॥
I wish to know this if it is not a secret. How is it that your face resembling the full moon is expressionless and inactive?

Brahmā said: Having heard the words of that great soul Vasiṣṭha, And seeing him shining like blazing fire, I (Brahmā) was filled with awe.

शरीरधृग्ब्रह्मचर्यं विलसंतं जटाधरम् ॥ सादरं प्रणिपत्याथ संध्योवाच तपोधनम् ॥ ५३ ॥
zarIradhRgbrahmacaryaM vilasaMtaM jaTAdharam ॥ sAdaraM praNipatyAtha saMdhyovAca tapodhanam ॥ 53 ॥
Seeing him blazing like fire, shining like Brahmacarya (Celibacy) personified, Sandhyā bowed to the sage wearing matted hair and spoke to him respectfully.

संध्योवाच ॥ यदर्थमागता शैलं सिद्धं तन्मे निबोध ह ॥ तव दर्शनमात्रेण यन्मे सेत्स्यति वा विभो ॥ ५४ ॥
saMdhyovAca ॥ yadarthamAgatA zailaM siddhaM tanme nibodha ha ॥ tava darzanamAtreNa yanme setsyati vA vibho ॥ 54 ॥
Sandhyā said: O fearless (sage), know that the purpose for which I came to this mountain has already been achieved or rather will be achieved by your very sight.

तपश्चर्तुमहं ब्रह्मन्निर्जनं शैलमागता ॥ ब्रह्मणोहं सुता जाता नाम्ना संध्येति विश्रुता ॥५५॥
tapazcartumahaM brahmannirjanaM zailamAgatA ॥ brahmaNohaM sutA jAtA nAmnA saMdhyeti vizrutA ॥55॥
O sage, I came to this mountain devoid of men to perform penance. I am the daughter of Brahmā and am known as Sandhyā.

यदि ते युज्यते सह्यं मां त्वं समुपदेशय ॥ एतच्चिकीर्षितं गुह्यं नान्यैः किंचन विद्यते ॥५६॥
yadi te yujyate sahyaM mAM tvaM samupadezaya ॥ etaccikIrSitaM guhyaM nAnyaiH kiMcana vidyate ॥56॥
If it be proper and not inconvenient for you please instruct me. This is what I expect of you. There is nothing to be kept secret in this.

अज्ञात्वा तपसो भावं तपोवनमुपाश्रिता ॥ चिंतया परिशुष्येहं वेपते हि मनो मम ॥५७॥
ajJAtvA tapaso bhAvaM tapovanamupAzritA ॥ ciMtayA parizuSyehaM vepate hi mano mama ॥57॥
Without knowing the procedure of penance I have come to this penance grove. Due to this worry I am perplexed and my heart trembles.

brahmovAca ॥ AkarNya tasyA vacanaM vasiSTho brahmavittamaH ॥ svayaM ca sarvakRtyajJo nAnyatkiMcana pRSTavAn ॥ 58 ॥
On hearing her words, Vasiṣṭha, the most excellent among the knowers of Brahman, well-versed in every rite did not ask anything further.

अथ तां नियतात्मानं तपसेति धृतोद्यमाम् ॥ प्रोवाच मनसा स्मृत्वा शंकरं भक्तवत्सलम् ॥ ५९ ॥
atha tAM niyatAtmAnaM tapaseti dhRtodyamAm ॥ provAca manasA smRtvA zaMkaraM bhaktavatsalam ॥ 59 ॥
After remembering Śiva favourably disposed to the devotees he addressed the lady who had controlled herself and was preparing for the penance.

वसिष्ठ उवाच ॥ परमं यो महत्तेजः परमं यो महत्तपः ॥ परमः परमाराध्यः शम्भुर्मनसि धार्यताम् ॥ 2-2-5-६० ॥
vasiSTha uvAca ॥ paramaM yo mahattejaH paramaM yo mahattapaH ॥ paramaH paramArAdhyaH zambhurmanasi dhAryatAm ॥ 2-2-5-60 ॥
He who is the supreme brilliance, He who is the greatest austerity, He who is the worthiest of worship—let that Śiva be meditated upon.

धर्मार्थकाममोक्षाणां य एकस्त्वादिकारणम् ॥ तमेकं जगतामाद्यं भजस्व पुरुषोत्तमम् ॥ ६१ ॥
dharmArthakAmamokSANAM ya ekastvAdikAraNam ॥ tamekaM jagatAmAdyaM bhajasva puruSottamam ॥ 61 ॥
Worship Him who is the most excellent of all Beings, the sole first cause of all the worlds and the principal cause of virtue, wealth, love and salvation.

मंत्रेणानेन देवेशं शम्भुं भज शुभानने ॥ तेन ते सकला वाप्तिर्भविष्यति न संशयः ॥६२॥
maMtreNAnena devezaM zambhuM bhaja zubhAnane ॥ tena te sakalA vAptirbhaviSyati na saMzayaH ॥62॥
O lady, worship lord Śiva, the lord of all Devas with the following mantra. By that, certainly you will achieve everything.

ॐ नमश्शंकरायेति ॐमित्यंतेन सन्ततम् ॥ मौनतपस्याप्रारंम्भं तन्मे निगदतः शृणु॥६३॥
OM namazzaMkarAyeti OMmityaMtena santatam ॥ maunatapasyAprAraMmbhaM tanme nigadataH zRNu॥63॥
“Oṃ Namaḥ Śaṃkarāya Oṃ” “Oṃ obeisance to Śiva Oṃ.” With this mantra the penance is pervaded. The whole penance begins with silence. I shall explain it. Listen.

स्नानं मौनेन कर्तव्यं मौनेन हरपूजनम् ॥ द्वयोः पूर्णजलाहारं प्रथमं षष्ठकालयोः ॥ ६४ ॥
snAnaM maunena kartavyaM maunena harapUjanam ॥ dvayoH pUrNajalAhAraM prathamaM SaSThakAlayoH ॥ 64 ॥
The ceremonial bath shall be taken silently. The worship of Śiva shall be performed silently. The food taken in shall solely consist of water in the first and second Ṣaṣṭakālas (a period ⅙ of the day=4 hrs.)

तृतीये षष्ठकाले तु ह्युपवासपरो भवेत् ॥ एवं तपस्समाप्तौ वा षष्ठे काले क्रिया भवेत् ॥ ६५ ॥
tRtIye SaSThakAle tu hyupavAsaparo bhavet ॥ evaM tapassamAptau vA SaSThe kAle kriyA bhavet ॥ 65 ॥
On the third Ṣaṣṭhakāla you shall observe complete fast ॥ without even taking water॥. This shall continue till the conclusion of the penance. The rites shall be performed at the end of each Ṣaṣṭhakāla.

एवं मौनतपस्याख्या ब्रह्मचर्यफलप्रदा ॥ सर्वाभीष्टप्रदा देवि सत्यंसत्यं न संशयः ॥ ६६ ॥
evaM maunatapasyAkhyA brahmacaryaphalapradA ॥ sarvAbhISTapradA devi satyaMsatyaM na saMzayaH ॥ 66 ॥
This is called the penance of silence. It yields all the benefits of celibate life. O lady, it confers all cherished desires. True, it is certainly true.

एवं चित्ते समुद्दिश्य कामं चिंतय शंकरम् ॥ स ते प्रसन्न इष्टार्थमचिरादेव दास्यति ॥ ६७ ॥
evaM citte samuddizya kAmaM ciMtaya zaMkaram ॥ sa te prasanna iSTArthamacirAdeva dAsyati ॥ 67 ॥
Thinking thus in your mind, O lady, you meditate on Śiva. If He is pleased He will confer on you all you wish, ere long.

brahmovAca ॥ upavizya vasiSThotha saMdhyAyai tapasaH kriyAm ॥ tAmAbhASya yathAnyAyaM tatraivAMtardadhe muniH ॥ 68 ॥
Brahmā said: Vasiṣṭha then sat and explained to Sandhyā the rites of the penance. The sage then vanished from the scene.
