brahmovAca ॥ tataste munayaH sarve tadAbhiprAyavedinaH ॥ cakrustaducitaM nAma marIcipramukhAssutAH ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: Then those sages, my sons—Marīci and others who understood my view, gave him suitable names.

mukhAvalokanAdeva jJAtvA vRttAMtamanyataH ॥ dakSAdayazca sraSTAraH sthAnaM patnIM ca te daduH ॥2॥
Dakṣa and others who understood other facts on seeing my face gave him a suitable place and a wife.

The brahmins Marīci and others, my sons, decided on suitable names for the Being and said thus.

ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ यस्मात्प्रमथसे तत्त्वं जातोस्माकं यथा विधेः ॥ तस्मान्मन्मथनामा त्वं लोके ख्यातो भविष्यसि ॥४॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ yasmAtpramathase tattvaM jAtosmAkaM yathA vidheH ॥ tasmAnmanmathanAmA tvaM loke khyAto bhaviSyasi ॥4॥
The sages said: Since at your nativity itself you have begun to torment and bedevil our minds and that of Brahmā too, you will be famous in the world as Manmatha.

जगत्सु कामरूपस्त्वं त्वत्समो न हि विद्यते॥ अतस्त्वं कामनामापि ख्यातो भव मनोभव ॥५॥
jagatsu kAmarUpastvaM tvatsamo na hi vidyate॥ atastvaM kAmanAmApi khyAto bhava manobhava ॥5॥
You will be able to assume any form you wish. Hence, O mind-born God, you will be known as Kāma too. There is no one equal to you.

मदनान्मदनाख्यस्त्वं जातो दर्पात्सदर्पकः ॥ तस्मात्कंदर्पनामापि लोके ख्यातो भविष्यसि ॥६॥
madanAnmadanAkhyastvaM jAto darpAtsadarpakaH ॥ tasmAtkaMdarpanAmApi loke khyAto bhaviSyasi ॥6॥
Causing elation in others you will be known as Madana. Since you were haughty even as you were born you will be Darpaka and your name Kandarpa will also become popular in the world.

त्वत्समं सर्वदेवानां यद्वीर्यं न भविष्यति ॥ ततः स्थानानि सर्वाणि सर्वव्यापी भवांस्ततः ॥७॥
tvatsamaM sarvadevAnAM yadvIryaM na bhaviSyati ॥ tataH sthAnAni sarvANi sarvavyApI bhavAMstataH ॥7॥
The collective power of all the Devas will not be equal to yours. Therefore you will have any station as yours and you will be omnipresent too.

दक्षोयं भवते पत्नी स्वयं दास्यति कामिनीम् ॥ आद्यः प्रजापतिर्यो हि यथेष्टं पुरुषोत्तमः ॥८॥
dakSoyaM bhavate patnI svayaM dAsyati kAminIm ॥ AdyaH prajApatiryo hi yatheSTaM puruSottamaH ॥8॥
Dakṣa here, the first Prajāpati, will give you a suitable wife, O best of men, as you please.

eSA ca kanyakA cArurUpA brahmamanobhavA ॥ saMdhyA nAmneti vikhyAtA sarvaloke bhaviSyati ॥ 9 ॥
This girl of handsome features, born of Brahmā’s mind, shall become famous in the world as Sandhyā.

brahmaNo dhyAyato yasmAtsamyagjAtA varAMganA ॥ atassaMdhyeti vikhyAtA krAMtAbhA tulyamallikA ॥ 2-2-3-10 ॥
Since she was born when Brahmā was deeply contemplating, the woman of lovely features will be famous as Sandhyā. She will be as lustrous as the jasmine flower.

॥ ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ कौसुमानि तथास्त्राणि पंचादाय मनोभवः ॥ प्रच्छन्नरूपी तत्रैव चिंतयामास निश्चयम् ॥ ११ ॥
॥ brahmovAca ॥ kausumAni tathAstrANi paMcAdAya manobhavaH ॥ pracchannarUpI tatraiva ciMtayAmAsa nizcayam ॥ 11 ॥
Brahmā said: Taking his five flower-arrows, Kāma decided on his future course remaining invisible in form.

हर्षणं रोचनाख्यं च मोहनं शोषणं तथा ॥ मारणं चेति प्रोक्तानि मुनेर्मोहकराण्यपि ॥ १२ ॥
harSaNaM rocanAkhyaM ca mohanaM zoSaNaM tathA ॥ mAraNaM ceti proktAni munermohakarANyapi ॥ 12 ॥
His five arrows are respectively Harṣaṇa (delighting), Rocana (appealing), Mohana (deluding), Śoṣaṇa (withering) and Māraṇa (killing). Even sages could be deluded and tormented by them.

ब्रह्मणा मम यत्कर्म समुद्दिष्टं सनातनम् ॥ तदिहैव करिष्यामि मुनीनां सन्निधौ विधे ॥ १३ ॥
brahmaNA mama yatkarma samuddiSTaM sanAtanam ॥ tadihaiva kariSyAmi munInAM sannidhau vidhe ॥ 13 ॥
Brahmā said: Whatever eternal task has been assigned to me by Brahma, I will perform it right here, in the presence of the sages (munis), according to the divine order.

तिष्ठंति मुनयश्चात्र स्वयं चापि प्रजापतिः ॥ एतेषां साक्षिभूतं मे भविष्यंत्यद्य निश्चयम् ॥१४॥
tiSThaMti munayazcAtra svayaM cApi prajApatiH ॥ eteSAM sAkSibhUtaM me bhaviSyaMtyadya nizcayam ॥14॥
The sages stand here, and Prajāpati himself is also present. Today, I am certain that they will serve as witnesses to the fulfillment of my task.

संध्यापि ब्रह्मणा प्रोक्ता चेदानीं प्रेषयेद्वचः ॥ इह कर्म परीक्ष्यैव प्रयोगान्मोहयाम्यहम् ॥ १५ ॥
saMdhyApi brahmaNA proktA cedAnIM preSayedvacaH ॥ iha karma parIkSyaiva prayogAnmohayAmyaham ॥ 15 ॥
Even the twilight (period) was spoken of by Brahmā, Now, I send forth this speech, and by testing actions, I am becoming deluded.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ इति संचित्य मनसा निश्चित्य च मनोभवः ॥ पुष्पजं पुष्पजातस्य योजयामास मार्गणैः ॥ १६ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ iti saMcitya manasA nizcitya ca manobhavaH ॥ puSpajaM puSpajAtasya yojayAmAsa mArgaNaiH ॥ 16 ॥
After thinking like this and deciding on his further activity, Kāma fitted his flower-arrows.

आलीढस्थानमासाद्य धनुराकृष्य यत्नतः ॥ चकार वलयाकारं कामो धन्विवरस्तदा ॥ १७ ॥
AlIDhasthAnamAsAdya dhanurAkRSya yatnataH ॥ cakAra valayAkAraM kAmo dhanvivarastadA ॥ 17 ॥
Kāma, the foremost of archers, stood steady in the posture of Ālīḍha (the posture for shooting, the right knee advanced and the left leg retracted), bent his bow almost into a circle and was ready to shoot.

संहिते तेन कोदंडे मारुताश्च सुगंधयः ॥ ववुस्तत्र मुनिश्रेष्ठ सम्यगाह्लादकारिणः ॥ १८ ॥
saMhite tena kodaMDe mArutAzca sugaMdhayaH ॥ vavustatra munizreSTha samyagAhlAdakAriNaH ॥ 18 ॥
O excellent sage, when the bow was kept ready by him, fragrant winds delighting everyone blew there.

ततस्तानपि धात्रादीन् सर्वानेव च मानसान् ॥ पृथक् पुष्पशरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्मोहयामास मोहनः ॥१९॥
tatastAnapi dhAtrAdIn sarvAneva ca mAnasAn ॥ pRthak puSpazaraistIkSNairmohayAmAsa mohanaH ॥19॥
The enchanter then charmed Brahmā and others, the mental sons with several sharp flower-arrows.

tataste munayassarve mohitAzcApyahaM mune ॥ sahito manasA kaMcidvikAraM prApurAditaH ॥ 2-2-3-20 ॥
O sage, the sages and I were thus enamoured and we felt very great change in our mental feelings.

संध्यां सर्वे निरीक्षंतस्सविकारं मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ आसन् प्रवृद्धमदनाः स्त्री यस्मान्मदनैधिनी ॥ २१ ॥
saMdhyAM sarve nirIkSaMtassavikAraM muhurmuhuH ॥ Asan pravRddhamadanAH strI yasmAnmadanaidhinI ॥ 21 ॥
We began to stare at Sandhyā frequently, passion depraving our minds. Our lust was heightened. Truly a woman is one who increases passionate feelings.

ततः सर्वान्स मदनो मोहयित्वा पुनःपुनः ॥ यथेन्द्रियविकारं त प्रापुस्तानकरोत्तथा ॥२२॥
tataH sarvAnsa madano mohayitvA punaHpunaH ॥ yathendriyavikAraM ta prApustAnakarottathA ॥22॥
Making all of us thoroughly enchanted thus, he did not stop till all of us lost control over our sense-organs.

udIriteMdriyo dhAtA vIkSyAhaM sa yadA ca tAm ॥ tadaiva conapaMcAzadbhAvA jAtAzzarIrataH ॥ 23 ॥
When on seeing her, my vital elements became displaced, forty-nine animal instincts Bhāvas came, out of my body.

सापि तैर्वीक्ष्यमाणाथ कंदर्पशरपातनात् ॥ चक्रे मुहुर्मुहुर्भावान्कटाक्षावरणादिकान् ॥ २४ ॥
sApi tairvIkSyamANAtha kaMdarpazarapAtanAt ॥ cakre muhurmuhurbhAvAnkaTAkSAvaraNAdikAn ॥ 24 ॥
She too began to manifest the instinctive gestures of side-glances, pretences of concealing feelings etc. as a result of being hit by Kāma’s arrows when she was being stared at by them.

Profusely exhibiting these emotions, the naturally beautiful Sandhyā shone brilliantly like the celestial river producing gentle ripples.

tataste munayassarve marIcyatrimukhA api ॥ dakSAdyAzca dvijazreSTha prApurvekArikendriyam ॥ 27 ॥
All the sages, Marīci, Atri, Dakṣa and others, O foremost among brahmins, attained the state of sensuous excitement.

dRSTvA tathAvidhA dakSamarIcipramukhAzca mAm ॥ saMdhyAM ca karmaNi nije zraddadhe madanastadA ॥28॥
Seeing me as well as Dakṣa, Marici and others in such a situation and seeing Sandhyā engaged in her affairs, Madana continued to concentrate his attention on his activity.

यदिदं ब्रह्मणा कर्म ममोद्दिष्टं मयापि तत् ॥ कर्तुं शक्यमिति ह्यद्धा भावितं स्वभुवा तदा॥२९॥
yadidaM brahmaNA karma mamoddiSTaM mayApi tat ॥ kartuM zakyamiti hyaddhA bhAvitaM svabhuvA tadA॥29॥
“The work entrusted to me by Brahmā can easily be performed by me” so thought Kāma justifiably.

itthaM pApagatiM vIkSya bhrAtRRNAM ca pitustathA ॥ dharmassasmAra zaMbhuM vai tadA dharmAvanaM prabhum ॥ 2-2-3-30 ॥
On seeing the sinful proclivities of his brothers and father, Dharma remembered Lord Śiva, the lord protector of virtue.

संस्मरन्मनसा धर्मं शंकरं धर्मपालकम् ॥ तुष्टाव विविधैर्वाक्यैर्दीनो भूत्वाजसंभवः ॥ ३१ ॥
saMsmaranmanasA dharmaM zaMkaraM dharmapAlakam ॥ tuSTAva vividhairvAkyairdIno bhUtvAjasaMbhavaH ॥ 31 ॥
Mentally meditating on Śiva, the protector of virtue, Dharma, the son of Brahmā eulogised Śiva with different prayers in his state of sorrow.

धर्म उवाच ॥ देवदेव महादेव धर्मपाल नमोस्तु ते ॥ सृष्टिस्थितिविनाशानां कर्ता शंभो त्वमेव हि ॥ ३२ ॥
dharma uvAca ॥ devadeva mahAdeva dharmapAla namostu te ॥ sRSTisthitivinAzAnAM kartA zaMbho tvameva hi ॥ 32 ॥
Dharma said: O Mahādeva, lord of Devas, protector of virtues, obeisance be to Thee. O Śiva, Thou alone art the author of creation, sustenance and dissolution.

सृष्टौ ब्रह्मा स्थितौ विष्णुः प्रलये हररूपधृक् ॥ रजस्सत्त्वतमोभिश्च त्रिगुणैरगुणः प्रभो ॥ ३३ ॥
sRSTau brahmA sthitau viSNuH pralaye hararUpadhRk ॥ rajassattvatamobhizca triguNairaguNaH prabho ॥ 33 ॥
By virtue of three Guṇas, Rajas, Sattva and Tamas, Thou assumest the form of Brahmā at the time of creation, that of Viṣṇu at the time of sustenance and that of Rudra at the time of dissolution. Yet, O lord, Thou art devoid of attributes.

निस्त्रैगुण्यः शिवः साक्षात्तुर्यश्च प्रकृतेः परः ॥ निर्गुणो निर्विकारी त्वं नानालीलाविशारदः ॥ ३४ ॥
nistraiguNyaH zivaH sAkSAtturyazca prakRteH paraH ॥ nirguNo nirvikArI tvaM nAnAlIlAvizAradaH ॥ 34 ॥
Thou art Śiva free from the influence of the three Guṇas, the fourth Being. Thou art beyond Prakṛti. Thou art expert in various divine sports, yet without attributes and free from deformities and decays.

रक्षरक्ष महादेव पापान्मां दुस्तरादितः ॥ मत्पितायं तथा चेमे भ्रातरः पापबुद्धयः ॥ ३५ ॥
rakSarakSa mahAdeva pApAnmAM dustarAditaH ॥ matpitAyaM tathA ceme bhrAtaraH pApabuddhayaH ॥ 35 ॥
Great Lord! save me from this impassable ocean of sin. My father and my brothers are now sinfully inclined towards me.

ब्रह्मोवाच॥ इति स्तुतो महेशानो धर्मेणैव परः प्रभुः ॥ तत्राजगाम शीघ्रं वै रक्षितुं धर्ममात्मभूः ॥ ३६ ॥
brahmovAca॥ iti stuto mahezAno dharmeNaiva paraH prabhuH ॥ tatrAjagAma zIghraM vai rakSituM dharmamAtmabhUH ॥ 36 ॥
Brahmā said: Thus eulogised by Dharma, the great lord, selfborn Śiva came there immediately in order to protect Dharma.

जातो वियद्गतश्शंभुर्विधिं दृष्ट्वा तथाविधम्॥ मां दक्षाद्यांश्च मनसा जहासोपजहास च ॥ ३७ ॥
jAto viyadgatazzaMbhurvidhiM dRSTvA tathAvidham॥ mAM dakSAdyAMzca manasA jahAsopajahAsa ca ॥ 37 ॥
Stationed in the ether, Śiva saw me, Brahman, Dakṣa and others in such a mental state and so laughed mockingly.

स साधुवादं तान् सर्वान्विहस्य च पुनः पुनः ॥ उवाचेदं मुनिश्रेष्ठ लज्जयन् वृषभध्वजः ॥ ३८ ॥
sa sAdhuvAdaM tAn sarvAnvihasya ca punaH punaH ॥ uvAcedaM munizreSTha lajjayan vRSabhadhvajaH ॥ 38 ॥
O best of sages, in the midst of his intermittent laughter making all blush with shame, the full-emblemed deity spoke these consoling words.

शिव उवाच ॥ अहो ब्रह्मंस्तव कथं कामभावस्समुद्गतः ॥ दृष्ट्वा च तनयां नैव योग्यं वेदानुसारिणाम् ॥३९॥
ziva uvAca ॥ aho brahmaMstava kathaM kAmabhAvassamudgataH ॥ dRSTvA ca tanayAM naiva yogyaM vedAnusAriNAm ॥39॥
Śiva said: Alas! O Brahmā, how is it that you were overwhelmed with lustful feelings on seeing your own daughter? This is highly improper for those who walk on the line of the Vedas.

Sandhyā who thus became the mother of the Pitṛs served the same purpose as theirs. Since she has been glanced at kindly by Śiva she became free from defects and devoted herself to virtuous rites.

Kāma said: O Brahmā, why have I been so terribly cursed by you? O lord of worlds, I have not committed any sin against you who are reputed to follow justiciable path.

O Brahmā, you have assigned me my task. I have only carried it out. Hence this curse is not proper. I have not done anything else.

On hearing these words of mine, Kāma and the mental sons of mine became happy and returned quickly to their abodes.
