nArada uvAca ॥ vidhe sarvaM vijAnAsi kRpayA zaMkarasya ca ॥ tvayAdbhutA hi kathitAH kathA me zivayozzubhAH ॥ 1॥
Nārada said: O Brahmā, thanks to Śiva’s favour, you know everything. You have narrated to me the wonderful stories of Śiva and Pārvatī.

tvanmukhAMbhojasaMvRttAM zrutvA zivakathAM parAm ॥ atRpto hi punastAM vai zrotumicchAmyahaM prabho॥2॥
O lord, I am never fully satiated by hearing the great story of Śiva from your lotus-like face. I wish to hear further the same.

pUrNAMzazzaMkarasyaiva yo rudro varNitaH purA ॥ vidhe tvayA mahezAnaH kailAsanilayo vazI॥3॥
The Rudra who was described earlier as a full portion (pūrṇāṁśa) of Śaṅkara (Shiva), O Brahmā (Vidhe), is none other than Maheśāna, the Lord dwelling in Kailāsa, who is sovereign and all-controlling.

स योगी सर्वविष्ण्वादिसुरसे व्यस्सतां गतिः ॥ निर्द्वंद्वः क्रीडति सदा निर्विकारी महाप्रभुः ॥ ४ ॥
sa yogI sarvaviSNvAdisurase vyassatAM gatiH ॥ nirdvaMdvaH krIDati sadA nirvikArI mahAprabhuH ॥ 4 ॥
He is the great Yogi, worshipped by Vishnu and all other gods, the goal of the righteous, who eternally plays in bliss, being free from all dualities and changeless, the Supreme Lord.

so'bhUtpunargRhasthazca vivAhya paramAM striyam ॥ hariprArthanayA prItyA maMgalAM svatapasvinIm ॥5॥
He then became a householder again, marrying a supremely virtuous woman, Mangala, a self-disciplined ascetic—through the prayer of Hari (Vishnu) and with loving delight.

प्रथमं दक्षपुत्री सा पश्चात्सा पर्वतात्मजा ॥ कथमेकशरीरेण द्वयोरप्यात्मजा मता॥६॥
prathamaM dakSaputrI sA pazcAtsA parvatAtmajA ॥ kathamekazarIreNa dvayorapyAtmajA matA॥6॥
First, she was the daughter of Daksha, and later, she became the daughter of Parvatī (the Mountain Lord). How could she be considered the daughter of both, in a single body, when both were regarded as her divine parents?

kathaM satI pArvatI sA punazzivamupAgatA ॥ etatsarvaM tathAnyacca brahman gaditumarhasi ॥7॥
How did Sati, who became Parvati, return to Shiva again? O Brahman (Brahmā), you are worthy to explain all this, and anything else related to it.

sUta uvAca ॥ iti tasya vacaH zrutvA surarSeH zaMkarAtmanaH ॥ prasannamAnaso bhUtvA brahmA vacanamabravIt ॥ 8 ॥
Sūta said: On hearing these words of the celestial sage devoted to Śiva, Brahmā became delighted and said again.

brahmovAca ॥ zRNu tAta munizreSTha kathayAmi kathAM zubhAm ॥ yAM zrutvA saphalaM janma bhaviSyati na saMzayaH॥9॥
Brahmā said: O best of sages, dear one, listen. I shall narrate the auspicious story on hearing which undoubtedly the life will become fruitful.

purAhaM svasutAM dRSTvA saMdhyAhvAM tanayaissaha ॥ abhavaM vikRtastAta kAmabANaprapIDitaH ॥ 2-2-1-10 ॥
Formerly, on seeing my daughter Sandhyā in the company of my sons I was afflicted by the arrows of the cupid and much upset.

धर्मः स्मृतस्तदा रुद्रो महायोगी परः प्रभुः॥ धिक्कृत्य मां सुतैस्तात स्वस्थानं गतवानयम् ॥ ११ ॥
dharmaH smRtastadA rudro mahAyogI paraH prabhuH॥ dhikkRtya mAM sutaistAta svasthAnaM gatavAnayam ॥ 11 ॥
When remembered by Dharma, Rudra, the highest lord and the greatest yogin came there. He reproached me as well as my sons and went back to His abode.

yanmAyAmohitazcAhaM vedavaktA ca mUDhadhIH ॥ tenAkArSaM sahAkArya paramezena zaMbhunA ॥ 12 ॥
A serious offence was committed by me against Śiva the great lord, by whose Māyā I was subjected to great delusion despite my being the reciter of the Vedas.

तदीर्षयाहमाकार्षं बहूपायान्सुतैः सह ॥ कर्तुं तन्मोहनं मूढः शिवमाया विमोहितः ॥ १३ ॥
tadIrSayAhamAkArSaM bahUpAyAnsutaiH saha ॥ kartuM tanmohanaM mUDhaH zivamAyA vimohitaH ॥ 13 ॥
Under great delusion and goaded by the envious feelings towards the lord I conspired with my sons to find out ways and means to delude the lord Himself. Here again I was deluded by Śiva’s Māyā

अभवंस्तेऽथ वै सर्वे तस्मिञ् शंभो परप्रभो ॥ उपाया निष्फलास्तेषां मम चापि मुनीश्वर ॥ १४ ॥
abhavaMste'tha vai sarve tasmiJ zaMbho paraprabho ॥ upAyA niSphalAsteSAM mama cApi munIzvara ॥ 14 ॥
O great sage, in Śiva the great lord, all those ways and means pursued by me and my sons became ineffective.

तदाऽस्मरं रमेशानं व्यथोपायस्तुतैस्सह ॥ अबोधयत्स आगत्य शिवभक्तिरतस्सुधीः ॥ १५ ॥
tadA'smaraM ramezAnaM vyathopAyastutaissaha ॥ abodhayatsa Agatya zivabhaktiratassudhIH ॥ 15 ॥
When my strategy failed I remembered the lord of Lakṣmī (Viṣṇu) in the company of my sons. The intelligent lord (Viṣṇu) devoted to Śiva came there and advised me.

प्रबोधितो रमेशेन शिवतत्त्वप्रदर्शिना ॥ तदीर्षामत्यजं सोहं तं हठं न विमोहितः ॥ १६ ॥
prabodhito ramezena zivatattvapradarzinA ॥ tadIrSAmatyajaM sohaM taM haThaM na vimohitaH ॥ 16 ॥
Instructed by Viṣṇu who demonstrated Śiva’s principles, I cast off my envy no doubt, but since I still was under delusion I did not eschew my stubbornness.

शक्तिं संसेव्य तत्प्रीत्योत्पादयामास तां तदा ॥ दक्षादशिक्न्यां वीरिण्यां स्वपुत्राद्धरमोहने ॥ १७ ॥
zaktiM saMsevya tatprItyotpAdayAmAsa tAM tadA ॥ dakSAdaziknyAM vIriNyAM svaputrAddharamohane ॥ 17 ॥
I humbly served Śakti and when she was pleased I created her as the daughter of Dakṣa and Asiknī (Dakṣa’s wife). Dakṣa, you remember, was my son. This was my endeavour to make Hara enamoured of her.

सोमा भूत्वा दक्षसुता तपः कृत्वा तु दुस्सहम् ॥ रुद्रपत्न्यभवद्भक्त्या स्वभक्तहितकारिणी ॥ १८ ॥
somA bhUtvA dakSasutA tapaH kRtvA tu dussaham ॥ rudrapatnyabhavadbhaktyA svabhaktahitakAriNI ॥ 18 ॥
The goddess Umā became Dakṣa’s daughter, performed a severe penance and thanks to her great devotion became Rudra’s wife. The goddess indeed is a benefactress of her devotees.

सोमो रुद्रो गृही भूत्वाऽकार्षील्लीलां परां प्रभुः ॥ मोहयित्वाथ मां तत्र स्वविवाहेऽविकारधीः ॥ ॥ १९ ॥
somo rudro gRhI bhUtvA'kArSIllIlAM parAM prabhuH ॥ mohayitvAtha mAM tatra svavivAhe'vikAradhIH ॥ ॥ 19 ॥
In the company of Umā, Rudra became a householder and the great lord performed divine sports. He of undecaying intellect deluded me even at the time of his marriage.

विवाह्य तां स आगत्य स्वगिरौ सूतिकृत्तया ॥ रेमे बहुविमोहो हि स्वतंत्रस्स्वात्तविग्रहः ॥ 2-2-1-२० ॥
vivAhya tAM sa Agatya svagirau sUtikRttayA ॥ reme bahuvimoho hi svataMtrassvAttavigrahaH ॥ 2-2-1-20 ॥
The independent lord assuming his own body married her and returned to his mountain. In her company he sported much, deluding many.

तया विहरतस्तस्य व्यातीयाय महान् मुने ॥ कालस्सुखकरश्शभोर्निर्विकारस्य सद्रतेः ॥ २१ ॥
tayA viharatastasya vyAtIyAya mahAn mune ॥ kAlassukhakarazzabhornirvikArasya sadrateH ॥ 21 ॥
O sage, much time was happily spent by Śiva free from all depraved feelings and indulging in noble dalliance with her.

ततो रुद्रस्य दक्षेण स्पर्द्धा जाता निजेच्छया ॥ महामूढस्य तन्मायामोहितस्य सुगर्विणः ॥ २२ ॥
tato rudrasya dakSeNa sparddhA jAtA nijecchayA ॥ mahAmUDhasya tanmAyAmohitasya sugarviNaH ॥ 22 ॥
Then, due to Daksha, a rivalry arose with Rudra (Shiva), born from his own will. It was the result of the great ignorance of Daksha, who was deluded by his own illusion, leading to pride and arrogance.

तत्प्रभावाद्धरं दक्षो महागर्वी विमूढधीः ॥ महाशांतं निर्विकारं निनिxद बहुमोहितः ॥ २३ ॥
tatprabhAvAddharaM dakSo mahAgarvI vimUDhadhIH ॥ mahAzAMtaM nirvikAraM ninixda bahumohitaH ॥ 23 ॥
Due to the influence of that (rivalry), Daksha, full of great pride, with a deluded mind, Although Shiva is the most peaceful and unchanging, he was filled with great illusion and arrogance.

ततो दक्षः स्वयं यज्ञं कृतवान्गर्वितोऽहरम् ॥ सर्वानाहूय देवादीन् विष्णुं मां चाखिलाधिपः ॥२४॥
tato dakSaH svayaM yajJaM kRtavAngarvito'haram ॥ sarvAnAhUya devAdIn viSNuM mAM cAkhilAdhipaH ॥24॥
Then Dakṣa the haughty, performed a sacrifice without Śiva, although he had invited Viṣṇu, me and all other devas.

नाजुहाव तथाभूतो रुद्रं रोषसमाकुलः ॥ तथा तत्र सतीं नाम्ना स्वपुत्रीं विधिमोहितः ॥२५॥
nAjuhAva tathAbhUto rudraM roSasamAkulaH ॥ tathA tatra satIM nAmnA svaputrIM vidhimohitaH ॥25॥
Since he was in delusion he was very furious. So he did not invite Rudra and his own daughter Satī. He was greatly deluded by his own fate.

यदा नाकारिता पित्रा मायामोहित चेतसा॥ लीलां चकार सुज्ञाना महासाध्वी शिवा तदा॥२६॥
yadA nAkAritA pitrA mAyAmohita cetasA॥ lIlAM cakAra sujJAnA mahAsAdhvI zivA tadA॥26॥
When she was not invited by her father whose mind was deluded by illusion, Śivā (Satī) of perfect knowledge and purest chastity played a divine sport.

अथागता सती तत्र शिवाज्ञामधिगम्य सा ॥ अनाहूतापि दक्षेण गर्विणा स्वपितुर्गृहम् ॥ २७ ॥
athAgatA satI tatra zivAjJAmadhigamya sA ॥ anAhUtApi dakSeNa garviNA svapiturgRham ॥ 27 ॥
Though not invited by her haughty father she did go to her father’s house securing the reluctant permission of Śiva.

विलोक्य रुद्रभागं नो प्राप्यावज्ञां च ताततः ॥ विनिंद्य तत्र तान्सर्वान्देहत्यागमथाकरोत् ॥ २८ ॥
vilokya rudrabhAgaM no prApyAvajJAM ca tAtataH ॥ viniMdya tatra tAnsarvAndehatyAgamathAkarot ॥ 28 ॥
Seeing no share of Rudra set apart and being slighted by her father, she reproached all those who were present there and cast off her body.

तच्छुत्वा देव देवेशः क्रोधं कृत्वा तु दुस्सहम् ॥ जटामुत्कृत्य महतीं वीरभद्रमजीजनत् ॥२९॥
tacchutvA deva devezaH krodhaM kRtvA tu dussaham ॥ jaTAmutkRtya mahatIM vIrabhadramajIjanat ॥29॥
On hearing that, lord Śiva became unbearably furious and pulling at his matted hair he created Vīrabhadra.

सगणं तं समुत्पाद्य किं कुर्य्या मिति वादिनम् ॥ सर्वापमानपूर्वं हि यज्ञध्वंसं दिदेश ह ॥2-2-1-३०॥।
sagaNaM taM samutpAdya kiM kuryyA miti vAdinam ॥ sarvApamAnapUrvaM hi yajJadhvaMsaM dideza ha ॥2-2-1-30॥।
When he was created along with attendants he began asking “What shall I do?”. The entire annihilation of Dakṣa’s sacrifice and the disgrace of every one present there was the order issued by Śiva.

तदाज्ञां प्राप्य स गणाधीशो बहुबलान्वितः ॥ गतोऽरं तत्र सहसा महाबलपराक्रमः ॥३१॥
tadAjJAM prApya sa gaNAdhIzo bahubalAnvitaH ॥ gato'raM tatra sahasA mahAbalaparAkramaH ॥31॥
The lord of the Gaṇas (Vīrabhadra) accompanied by his soldiers reached the place immediately after receiving the orders.

महोपद्रवमाचेरुर्गणास्तत्र तदाज्ञया॥ सर्वान्स दंडयामास न कश्चिदवशेषितः।३२॥
mahopadravamAcerurgaNAstatra tadAjJayA॥ sarvAnsa daMDayAmAsa na kazcidavazeSitaH।32॥
They worked a great havoc there. Vīrabhadra chastised everyone and spared none.

विष्णुं संजित्य यत्नेन सामरं गणसत्तमः ॥ चक्रे दक्षशिरश्छेदं तच्छिरोग्नौ जुहाव च ॥ ३३ ॥
viSNuM saMjitya yatnena sAmaraM gaNasattamaH ॥ cakre dakSazirazchedaM tacchirognau juhAva ca ॥ 33 ॥
After defeating Viṣṇu and the Devas with strenuous effort, the chief of Gaṇas cut off the head of Dakṣa and consigned it to the sacrificial fire.

यज्ञध्वंसं चकाराशु महोपद्रवमाचरन् ॥ ततो जगाम स्वगिरिं प्रणनाम प्रभुं शिवम् ॥ ३४ ॥
yajJadhvaMsaM cakArAzu mahopadravamAcaran ॥ tato jagAma svagiriM praNanAma prabhuM zivam ॥ 34 ॥
Working great havoc he destroyed the sacrifice. Then he came back to the mountain and bowed to Lord Śiva.

यज्ञध्वंसोऽभवच्चेत्थं देवलोके हि पश्यति ॥ रुद्रस्यानुचरैस्तत्र वीरभद्रादिभिः कृतः॥३५॥
yajJadhvaMso'bhavaccetthaM devaloke hi pazyati ॥ rudrasyAnucaraistatra vIrabhadrAdibhiH kRtaH॥35॥
Even as the whole of the world of Devas was witnessing, the process of destruction of the sacrifice was carried out by Vīrabhadra and others, the followers of Rudra.

मुने नीतिरियं ज्ञेया श्रुतिस्मृतिषु संमता ॥ रुद्रे रुष्टे कथं लोके सुखं भवति सुप्रभो ॥३६॥
mune nItiriyaM jJeyA zrutismRtiSu saMmatA ॥ rudre ruSTe kathaM loke sukhaM bhavati suprabho ॥36॥
The policy in agreement with what is laid down in the Vedas and Smṛtis is this, O Sage, which you must note. When lord Rudra is angry, how can there be happiness in the world?

ततो रुद्रः प्रसन्नोभूत्स्तुतिमाकर्ण्य तां पराम् ॥ विज्ञप्तिं सफलां चक्रे सर्वेषां दीनवत्सलः ॥३७॥
tato rudraH prasannobhUtstutimAkarNya tAM parAm ॥ vijJaptiM saphalAM cakre sarveSAM dInavatsalaH ॥37॥
On hearing his song of praise Rudra relented. Favourably disposed to the miserable that he was, he granted their request.

पूर्ववच्च कृतं तेन कृपालुत्वं महात्मना॥ शंकरेण महेशेन नानालीलावि हारिणा ॥३८॥
pUrvavacca kRtaM tena kRpAlutvaM mahAtmanA॥ zaMkareNa mahezena nAnAlIlAvi hAriNA ॥38॥
Śiva, the great lord, indulging in different sorts of divine sports, became sympathetic and merciful as before.

जीवितस्तेन दक्षो हि तत्र सर्वे हि सत्कृताः ॥ पुनस्स कारितो यज्ञः शंकरेण कृपालुना ॥३९॥
jIvitastena dakSo hi tatra sarve hi satkRtAH ॥ punassa kArito yajJaH zaMkareNa kRpAlunA ॥39॥
Dakṣa was resuscitated. The whole sacrifice was renewed under the instruction of the merciful Lord Śiva. All those present were honoured in due manner.

rudrazca pUjitastatra sarvairdevairvizeSataH ॥ yajJe vizvAdibhirbhaktyA suprasannAtmabhirvane ॥2-2-1-40॥ ॥
O sage, in that sacrifice Rudra was honoured by all the Gods with due devotion. They were highly delighted.

satIdehasamutpannA jvAlA lokasukhAvahA ॥ patitA parvate tatra pUjitA sukhadAyinI ॥ 41 ॥
The flame of fire arising from the body of Satī and delighting the whole world fell on that mountain and it was duly worshipped.

ज्वालामुखीति विख्याता सर्वकामफलप्रदा ॥ बभूव परमा देवी दर्शनात्पापहारिणी ॥ ४२ ॥
jvAlAmukhIti vikhyAtA sarvakAmaphalapradA ॥ babhUva paramA devI darzanAtpApahAriNI ॥ 42 ॥
The deity became famous as Jvālāmukhī yielding fruits of cherished desires. Even her very vision quells all sins.

इदानीं पूज्यते लोके सर्वकामफलाप्तये ॥ संविधाभिरनेकाभिर्महोत्सवपरस्परम् ॥ ४३ ॥
idAnIM pUjyate loke sarvakAmaphalAptaye ॥ saMvidhAbhiranekAbhirmahotsavaparasparam ॥ 43 ॥
Even now she is worshipped with due festivities for the acquisition of all desires, observing all stipulated modes of procedure.

ततश्च सा सती देवी हिमालयसुता ऽभवत् ॥ तस्याश्च पार्वतीनाम प्रसिद्धमभवत्तदा ॥ ४४ ॥
tatazca sA satI devI himAlayasutA 'bhavat ॥ tasyAzca pArvatInAma prasiddhamabhavattadA ॥ 44 ॥
The Goddess Satī became the daughter of Himālaya. As such she became famous as Pārvatī.

सा पुनश्च समाराध्य तपसा कठिनेन वै ॥ तमेव परमेशानं भर्त्तारं समुपाश्रिता ॥ ४५ ॥
sA punazca samArAdhya tapasA kaThinena vai ॥ tameva paramezAnaM bharttAraM samupAzritA ॥ 45 ॥
She propitiated lord Śiva with a rigorous penance and attained him as her husband.

etatsarvaM samAkhyAtaM yatpRSTohaM munIzvara ॥ yacchrutvA sarvapApebhyo mucyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 46 ॥
O great sage, I have narrated to you all that you asked me. Whoever hears this narrative will no doubt be freed from all sins.
