brahmovAca ॥ zabdAdIni ca bhUtAni paMcIkRtvAhamAtmanA ॥ tebhyaH sthUlaM nabho vAyuM vahniM caiva jalaM mahIm ॥ 1 ॥
Brahmā said: Having combined (or grossified) the elements beginning with sound (i.e., the tanmātras), by my own Self, From them, I created the gross forms — space (nabhaḥ), air (vāyu), fire (vahni), water (jala), and earth (mahī).

O Nārada, I also created the mountains and oceans, as well as trees and other beings, And various divisions of time — beginning with Kalā and extending up to Yugas.

sRSTyaMtAnaparAMzcApi nAhaM tuSTo'bhava nmune ॥ tato dhyAtvA zivaM sAmbaM sAdhakAnasRjaM mune ॥ 3 ॥
I created many other things as well, but O sage, I was not satisfied. Then O sage, I meditated on Śiva and his consort Ambā and created aspirants.

marIciM ca svanetrAbhyAM hRdayAdbhRgumeva ca ॥ ziraso'girasaM vyAnAtpulahaM munisattamam ॥ 4 ॥
I created Marīci from my eyes, Bhṛgu from my heart; Aṅgiras from the head and the great sage Pulaha from the vital breath Vyāna.

udAnAcca pulastyaM hi vasiSThaJca samAnataH ॥ kratuM tvapAnAcchrotrAbhyAmatriM dakSaM ca prANataH ॥ 5 ॥
I created Pulastya from Udāna; Vasiṣṭha from Samāna; Kratu from Apāna; Atri from the ears and Dakṣa from the Prāṇa.

asRjaM tvAM tadotsaMgAcchAyAyAH kardamaM munim ॥ saMkalpAdasRjaM dharmaM sarvasAdhanasAdhanam ॥6॥
I created you, the sage Kardama, from the union of Shāyā (the divine energy or shadow), And from my will, I created Dharma, the instrument for all success in the world.

evametAnahaM sRSTvA kRtArthassAdhakottamAn ॥ abhavaM munizArdUla mahAdevaprasAdataH ॥ 7 ॥
Having created these beings, I became fulfilled (with purpose), the best of the spiritual achievers, I became this way, O best of sages, by the blessings of Mahādeva (Shiva).

tato madAjJayA tAta dharmaH saMkalpasaMbhavaH ॥ mAnavaM rUpamApannassAdhakaistu pravartitaH ॥8॥
Then, O dear one, Dharma, born out of my conception assumed the form of Manu at my bidding and was engaged in activity by the aspirants.

tato'sRjaM svagAtrebhyo vividhebhyo'mitAnsutAn ॥ surAsurAdikAMstebhyo dattvA tAM tAM tanuM mune ॥9॥
Then I created from the different parts of my body innumerable sons, Suras (devas) and Asuras (demons) and many others after assigning them different bodies, O sage.

tato'haM zaMkareNAtha preritoM'targatena ha ॥ dvidhA kRtvAtmano dehaM dvirUpazcAbhavaM mune ॥ 2-1-16-10 ॥
I was then prompted by Śiva present within me and hence, O sage, I split myself into two having assumed two forms.

अर्द्धेन नारी पुरुषश्चार्द्धेन संततो मुने । स तस्यामसृजद्द्वंद्वं सर्वसाधनमुत्तमम् ॥११॥
arddhena nArI puruSazcArddhena saMtato mune । sa tasyAmasRjaddvaMdvaM sarvasAdhanamuttamam ॥11॥
One half had the form of a woman and the other half that of a man॥ 1॥. He then created in her a couple, the means of excellent nature.

स्वायंभुवो मनुस्तत्र पुरुषः परसाधनम् ॥ शतरूपाभिधा नारी योगिनी सा तपस्विनी ॥ १२ ॥
svAyaMbhuvo manustatra puruSaH parasAdhanam ॥ zatarUpAbhidhA nArI yoginI sA tapasvinI ॥ 12 ॥
The man was Svāyambhuva Manu, the greatest of the means (of creation). The woman was Śatarūpā, a yoginī, an ascetic woman.

सा पुनर्मनुना तेन गृहीतातीव शोभना ॥ विवाहविधिना ताताऽसृजत्सर्गं समैथुनम् ॥ १३ ॥
sA punarmanunA tena gRhItAtIva zobhanA ॥ vivAhavidhinA tAtA'sRjatsargaM samaithunam ॥ 13 ॥
The auspicious lady was accepted by Manu with due matrimonial rites, O dear one, he created beings through her by the process of sexual intercourse.

तस्यां तेन समुत्पन्नस्तनयश्च प्रियव्रतः ॥ तथैवोत्तानपादश्च तथा कन्यात्रयं पुनः॥१४॥
tasyAM tena samutpannastanayazca priyavrataH ॥ tathaivottAnapAdazca tathA kanyAtrayaM punaH॥14॥
He begot of her two sons Priyavrata and Uttānapāda and three daughters Ākūti, Devahūti and Prasūti, all of them very famous.

आकूतिर्देवहूतिश्च प्रसूतिरिति विश्रुताः ॥ आकूतिं रुचये प्रादात्कर्दमाय तु मध्यमाम् ॥१५॥
AkUtirdevahUtizca prasUtiriti vizrutAH ॥ AkUtiM rucaye prAdAtkardamAya tu madhyamAm ॥15॥
Ākūti, Devahūti and Prasūti, all of them very famous. He gave Ākūti in marriage to Ruci and the middle one to Kardama.

ददौ प्रसूतिं दक्षायोत्तानपादानुजां सुताः ॥ तासां प्रसूतिप्रसवैस्सर्वं व्याप्तं चराचरम् ॥१६॥
dadau prasUtiM dakSAyottAnapAdAnujAM sutAH ॥ tAsAM prasUtiprasavaissarvaM vyAptaM carAcaram ॥16॥
He gave Prasūti the younger sister of Uttānapāda in marriage to Dakṣa. Their sons and progeny are spread over the world both mobile and immobile.

आकूत्यां च रुचेश्चाभूद्वंद्वं यज्ञश्च दक्षिणा ॥ यज्ञस्य जज्ञिरे पुत्रा दक्षिणायां च द्वादश ॥ १७ ॥
AkUtyAM ca rucezcAbhUdvaMdvaM yajJazca dakSiNA ॥ yajJasya jajJire putrA dakSiNAyAM ca dvAdaza ॥ 17 ॥
Ruci begot of Ākūti the couple Yajña and Dakṣiṇā. Twelve sons were born of Yajña and Dakṣiṇā.

देवहूत्यां कर्दमाच्च बह्व्यो जातास्सुता मुने ॥ दशाज्जाताश्चतस्रश्च तथा पुत्र्यश्च विंशतिः ॥ १८ ॥
devahUtyAM kardamAcca bahvyo jAtAssutA mune ॥ dazAjjAtAzcatasrazca tathA putryazca viMzatiH ॥ 18 ॥
O sage, Kardama begot of Devahūti many daughters. Dakṣa begot twenty-four daughters.

धर्माय दत्ता दक्षेण श्रद्धाद्यास्तु त्रयोदश ॥ शृणु तासां च नामानि धर्मस्त्रीणां मुनीश्वर॥१९॥
dharmAya dattA dakSeNa zraddhAdyAstu trayodaza ॥ zRNu tAsAM ca nAmAni dharmastrINAM munIzvara॥19॥
Thirteen daughters Śraddhā etc. were given to Dharma in marriage by Dakṣa. O lordly sage, listen to the names of Dharma’s wives.

श्रद्धा लक्ष्मीर्धृतिस्तुष्टिः पुष्टिर्मेधा तथा क्रिया ॥ वसुःर्बुद्धि लज्जा शांतिः सिद्धिः कीर्तिस्त्रयोदश ॥2-1-16-२०॥
zraddhA lakSmIrdhRtistuSTiH puSTirmedhA tathA kriyA ॥ vasuHrbuddhi lajjA zAMtiH siddhiH kIrtistrayodaza ॥2-1-16-20॥
Their names are Śraddhā (faith), Lakṣmī (fortune), Dhṛti (fortitude), Tuṣṭi (satiety), Puṣṭi (nourishment), Medhā (intelligence), Kriyā (rite, activity), Buddhi (intellect, wisdom), Lajjā (Bashfulness), Vasu (wealth), Śānti (peace, calmness), Siddhi (achievement, accomplishment) and the thirteenth is Kīrti (fame).

ताभ्यां शिष्टा यवीयस्य एकादश सुलोचनाः ॥ ख्यातिस्सत्पथसंभूतिः स्मृतिः प्रीतिः क्षमा तथा॥२१॥
tAbhyAM ziSTA yavIyasya ekAdaza sulocanAH ॥ khyAtissatpathasaMbhUtiH smRtiH prItiH kSamA tathA॥21॥
From those two (divine beings), were born eleven younger ones with beautiful eyes, Namely: Fame (Khyāti), Virtue-born Prosperity (Satpathasaṁbhūti), Memory (Smṛti), Love (Prīti), and Forgiveness (Kṣamā).

सन्नतिश्चानुरूपा च ऊर्जा स्वाहा स्वधा तथा ॥ भृगुर्भवो मरीचिश्च तथा चैवांगिरा मुनिः ॥ २२ ॥
sannatizcAnurUpA ca UrjA svAhA svadhA tathA ॥ bhRgurbhavo marIcizca tathA caivAMgirA muniH ॥ 22 ॥
Humility, propriety, energy, Svaha, and Svadha — also the sages Bhrigu, Bhava, Marichi, and Angira.

पुलस्त्यः पुलहश्चैव क्रतुश्चर्षिवरस्तथा ॥ अत्रिर्वासिष्ठो वह्निश्च पितरश्च यथाक्रमम् ॥ २३ ॥
pulastyaH pulahazcaiva kratuzcarSivarastathA ॥ atrirvAsiSTho vahnizca pitarazca yathAkramam ॥ 23 ॥
Pulastya, Pulaha, and also Kratu, the best of sages, Atri, Vashishta, Vahni, and the Pitrs (ancestors), in due order.

ख्यातास्ता जगृहुः कन्या भृग्वाद्यास्साधका वराः ॥ ततस्संपूरितं सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ॥ २४ ॥
khyAtAstA jagRhuH kanyA bhRgvAdyAssAdhakA varAH ॥ tatassaMpUritaM sarvaM trailokyaM sacarAcaram ॥ 24 ॥
The great aspirants Bhṛgu and others took the hands of these famous daughters. Thereupon the entire universe consisting of three worlds, mobile and immobile was filled (with progeny).

एवं कर्मानुरूपेण प्रणिनामंबिकापते॥ आज्ञया बहवो जाता असंख्याता द्विजर्षभाः ॥२५॥
evaM karmAnurUpeNa praNinAmaMbikApate॥ AjJayA bahavo jAtA asaMkhyAtA dvijarSabhAH ॥25॥
Thus according to their own actions and at the bidding of Śiva innumerable famous brahmins were born out of the various living beings.

कल्पभेदेन दक्षस्य षष्टिः कन्याः प्रकीर्तिताः ॥ तासां दश च धर्माय शशिने सप्तविंशतिम् ॥२६॥
kalpabhedena dakSasya SaSTiH kanyAH prakIrtitAH ॥ tAsAM daza ca dharmAya zazine saptaviMzatim ॥26॥
In another Kalpa, Dakṣa had sixty daughters. Of them ten were given to Dharma, twenty-seven to the Moon.

vidhinA dattavAndakSaH kazyapAya trayodaza ॥ catasraH pararUpAya dadau tArkSyAya nArada॥27॥
According to the prescribed rites, Daksha gave thirteen ॥ daughters॥ to Kashyapa, Four to Pararupa, and ॥ some॥ to Tarkshya and Narada.

भृग्वंगिरः कृशाश्वेभ्यो द्वे द्वे कन्ये च दत्तवान् ॥ ताभ्यस्तेभ्यस्तु संजाता बह्वी सृष्टिश्चराचरा ॥२८॥
bhRgvaMgiraH kRzAzvebhyo dve dve kanye ca dattavAn ॥ tAbhyastebhyastu saMjAtA bahvI sRSTizcarAcarA ॥28॥
Two to each of these—Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras and Kṛśāśva. Born of them are many children in the world of mobile and immobile.

त्रयोदशमितास्तस्मै कश्यपाय महात्मने ॥ दत्ता दक्षेण याः कन्या विधिवन्मुनिसत्तम ॥ २९ ॥
trayodazamitAstasmai kazyapAya mahAtmane ॥ dattA dakSeNa yAH kanyA vidhivanmunisattama ॥ 29 ॥
O great sage, thirteen daughters were given by Daksha, to the noble-souled Kashyapa, according to proper rites.

तासां प्रसूतिभिर्व्याप्तं त्रैलोक्यं सचराचरम् ॥ स्थावरं जंगमं चैव शून्य नैव तु किंचन ॥ 2-1-16-३० ॥
tAsAM prasUtibhirvyAptaM trailokyaM sacarAcaram ॥ sthAvaraM jaMgamaM caiva zUnya naiva tu kiMcana ॥ 2-1-16-30 ॥
From the offspring of those (daughters), the three worlds were filled with all beings, moving and non-moving. There was nothing left empty—everything became full.

देवाश्च ऋषयश्चैव दैत्याश्चैव प्रजज्ञिरे ॥ वृक्षाश्च पक्षिणश्चैव सर्वे पर्वतवीरुधः ॥ ३१ ॥
devAzca RSayazcaiva daityAzcaiva prajajJire ॥ vRkSAzca pakSiNazcaiva sarve parvatavIrudhaH ॥ 31 ॥
The gods, the sages, and also the demons were born; as well as trees, birds, and all the mountains and plants.

दक्षकन्याप्रसूतैश्च व्याप्तमेवं चराचरम् ॥ पातालतलमारभ्य सत्यलोकावधि ध्रुवम् ॥ ३२ ॥
dakSakanyAprasUtaizca vyAptamevaM carAcaram ॥ pAtAlatalamArabhya satyalokAvadhi dhruvam ॥ 32 ॥
Thus, through the offspring of Daksha's daughters, all of creation—moving and unmoving—was filled, starting from the lowest regions of Pātāla up to Satyaloka and even to Dhruva (the fixed star/realm).

ब्रह्मांडं सकलं व्याप्तं शून्यं नैव कदाचन ॥ एवं सृष्टिः कृता सम्यग्ब्रह्मणा शंभुशासनात् ॥ ३३ ॥
brahmAMDaM sakalaM vyAptaM zUnyaM naiva kadAcana ॥ evaM sRSTiH kRtA samyagbrahmaNA zaMbhuzAsanAt ॥ 33 ॥
The whole cosmic egg was filled. Never was it a void. Thus, at the bidding of Śiva, the creation was perfectly accomplished by Brahmā.

सती नाम त्रिशूलाग्रे सदा रुद्रेण रक्षिता ॥ तपोर्थं निर्मिता पूर्वं शंभुना सर्वविष्णुना ॥ ३४ ॥
satI nAma trizUlAgre sadA rudreNa rakSitA ॥ taporthaM nirmitA pUrvaM zaMbhunA sarvaviSNunA ॥ 34 ॥
Sati by name, always protected by Rudra at the tip of his trident, was originally created by Shambhu (Shiva), the Lord of all, for the purpose of penance.

सैव दक्षात्समुद्भूता लोककार्यार्थमेव च ॥ लीलां चकार बहुशो भक्तोद्धरणहेतवे॥ ॥ ३५ ॥
saiva dakSAtsamudbhUtA lokakAryArthameva ca ॥ lIlAM cakAra bahuzo bhaktoddharaNahetave॥ ॥ 35 ॥
She, who was born from Daksha, was for the welfare of the world, and for the sake of many divine acts, she performed numerous pastimes to uplift her devotees.

वामांगो यस्य वैकुंठो दक्षिणांगोऽहमेव च ॥ रुद्रो हृदयजो यस्य त्रिविधस्तु शिवः स्मृतः॥ ३६ ॥
vAmAMgo yasya vaikuMTho dakSiNAMgo'hameva ca ॥ rudro hRdayajo yasya trividhastu zivaH smRtaH॥ 36 ॥
Śiva manifested himself in three ways in the form of Vaikuṇṭha (Viṣṇu) born of the left limb, in my form (of Brahmā) born of the right limb and in the form of Rudra born of the heart.

अहं विष्णुश्च रुद्रश्च गुणास्त्रय उदाहृताः॥ स्वयं सदा निर्गुणश्च परब्रह्माव्ययश्शिवः ॥३७॥
ahaM viSNuzca rudrazca guNAstraya udAhRtAH॥ svayaM sadA nirguNazca parabrahmAvyayazzivaH ॥37॥
Viṣṇu, Rudra and I represent the three Guṇas. Śiva is free from Guṇas. He is the supreme Brahman, the undecaying.

विष्णुस्सत्त्वं रजोऽहं च तमो रुद्र उदाहृतः॥ लोकाचारत इत्येवं नामतो वस्तुतोऽन्यथा ॥३८॥
viSNussattvaM rajo'haM ca tamo rudra udAhRtaH॥ lokAcArata ityevaM nAmato vastuto'nyathA ॥38॥
Viṣṇu is of Sattva attribute, I (Brahmā) am of Rajas attribute and Rudra is of Tamas attribute. This is only in view of the activities in the world. But in fact and in name it is otherwise.

अंतस्तमो बहिस्सत्त्वो विष्णूरुद्रस्तथा मतः ॥ अंतस्सत्त्वस्तमोबाह्यो रजोहं सर्वेथा मुने ॥ ॥ ३९ ॥
aMtastamo bahissattvo viSNUrudrastathA mataH ॥ aMtassattvastamobAhyo rajohaM sarvethA mune ॥ ॥ 39 ॥
Viṣṇu is of Tāmasika nature within but externally Sāttvika; Rudra is of Sāttvika nature within but of Tāmasic nature outside, I am of Rājasic nature throughout.

The goddess of speech is of Rājasic nature; Satī is of the Sāttvika nature and Lakṣmī is of Tamasic nature; the great goddess Śivā is of the three natures.

Śivā became Satī and Śiva married her. At the sacrifice of her father she cast off her body which she did not take again and went back to her own region.

Śivā incarnated as Pārvatī at the request of the devas. It was after performing a severe penance that she could attain Śiva again.

O lordly sage, she came to be called by various names such as Kālī, Caṇḍikā, Cāmuṇḍā, Vijayā, Jayā.

These various names confer worldly pleasures and salvation according to qualities and action. The name Pārvatī is very common.

Śiva is the Supreme Brahman. The three deities, Viṣṇu, I and Rudra are His manifestations according to the difference in the attributes.

The independent Supreme Ātman, who is both Nirguṇa and Saguṇa sports with Śivā in the beautiful Śivaloka.

tasya pUrNavatAro hiM rudrassAkSAcchivaH smRtaH ॥ kailAse bhavanaM ramyaM paMcavaktrazcakAra ha ॥ brahmAMDasya tathA nAze tasya nAzosti vai na hi ॥2-1-16-50॥
His perfect and complete incarnation is Rudra. He is Śiva himself. The five-faced lord has made His beautiful mansion in Kailāsa. Even if the whole Brahmāṇḍa were destroyed, it knows no destruction.
