nArada uvAca ॥ vidhe vidhe mahAbhAga dhanyastvaM surasattama ॥ zrAvitAdyAdbhutA zaivakathA paramapAvanI ॥ 1 ॥
Nārada said: O creator, O Brahmā the fortunate, you are blessed O foremost among Devas. A wonderfully sanctifying story of Śiva has been narrated by you, today.

tatrAdbhutA mahAdivyA liMgotpattiH zrutA zubhA ॥ zrutvA yasyAH prabhAvaM ca duHkhanAzo bhavediha ॥ 2 ॥
I have heard the wonderfully divine story of the origin of the Liṅga, the auspicious hearing of the efficacy of which destroys all miseries here.

anaMtaraM ca yajjAtaM mAhAtmyaM caritaM tathA ॥ sRSTezcaiva prakAraM ca kathaya tvaM vizeSataH ॥ 3 ॥
Please narrate what transpired thereafter, the grandeur of the created things and particularly the mode of creation.

brahmovAca ॥ samyak pRSTe ca bhavatA yajjAtaM tadanaMtaram ॥ kathayiSyAmi saMkSepAdyathA pUrvaM zrutaM mayA ॥ 4 ॥
Brahmā said: You have requested very pertinently. I shall briefly narrate what transpired later as I have heard before.

aMtarhite tadA deve zivarUpe sanAtane ॥ ahaM viSNuzca viprendra adhikaM sukhamAptavAn ॥5॥
When the eternal God, in the form of Shiva, became hidden (or withdrew), O best of Brahmins, I (Brahma) and Vishnu attained supreme bliss.

मया च विष्णुना रूपं हंसवाराहयोस्तदा ॥ संवृतं तु ततस्ताभ्यां लोकसर्गावनेच्छया ॥६॥
mayA ca viSNunA rUpaM haMsavArAhayostadA ॥ saMvRtaM tu tatastAbhyAM lokasargAvanecchayA ॥6॥
By me and by Vishnu, the forms of the Swan (Haṁsa) and the Boar (Varāha) were then assumed. Thus, we both took those forms for the purpose of creating and preserving the worlds.

nArada uvAca ॥ vidhe brahman mahAprAjJa saMzayo hRdi me mahAn ॥ kRpAM kRtvAtulAM zIghraM taM nAzayitumarhasi ॥ 7 ॥
Nārada said: O Vidhi, O Brahmā, O wise one, I have a great doubt. Please remove the same.

हंसवाराहयो रूपं युवाभ्यां च धृतं कथम् ॥ अन्यद्रूपं विहायैव किमत्र वद कारणम् ॥ ८ ॥
haMsavArAhayo rUpaM yuvAbhyAM ca dhRtaM katham ॥ anyadrUpaM vihAyaiva kimatra vada kAraNam ॥ 8 ॥
How is it that both of you assumed the forms of Swan and Boar instead of other forms? Please tell me the reason for the same.

sUta uvAca ॥ ityetadvacanaM zrutvA nAradasya mahAtmanaH ॥ smRtvA zivapadAMbhojaM brahmA sAdaramabravIt ॥ 9 ॥
Sūta said: On hearing these words of the noble-souled Nārada, Brahmā spoke after remembering the lotus-like feet of Śiva.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ हंसस्य चोर्द्ध्वगमने गतिर्भवति निश्चला ॥ तत्त्वातत्त्वविवेकोऽस्ति जलदुग्धविभागवत् ॥ 2-1-15-१० ॥
brahmovAca ॥ haMsasya corddhvagamane gatirbhavati nizcalA ॥ tattvAtattvaviveko'sti jaladugdhavibhAgavat ॥ 2-1-15-10 ॥
Brahmā said: The swan has the power of going up steadily. It has the power of discriminating between the real and the unreal as in separating milk from water.

अज्ञानज्ञानयोस्तत्त्वं विवेचयति हंसकः॥ हंसरूपं धृतं तेन ब्रह्मणा सृष्टिकारिणा ॥ ११ ॥
ajJAnajJAnayostattvaM vivecayati haMsakaH॥ haMsarUpaM dhRtaM tena brahmaNA sRSTikAriNA ॥ 11 ॥
The swan understands the distinction between ignorance and knowledge. Hence I (Brahmā) the Creator, assumed the form of Swan.

विवेको नैव लब्धश्च यतो हंसो व्यलीयत ॥ शिवस्वरूपतत्त्वस्य ज्योतिरूपस्य नारद ॥ १२ ॥
viveko naiva labdhazca yato haMso vyalIyata ॥ zivasvarUpatattvasya jyotirUpasya nArada ॥ 12 ॥
O Nārada! But I failed to cognize the refulgent form of Śiva and therefore could not exercise my power of discrimination.

सृष्टिप्रवृत्तिकामस्य कथं ज्ञानं प्रजायते ॥ यतो लब्धो विवेकोऽपि न मया हंसरूपिणा ॥ १३ ॥
sRSTipravRttikAmasya kathaM jJAnaM prajAyate ॥ yato labdho viveko'pi na mayA haMsarUpiNA ॥ 13 ॥
How can real knowledge dawn on one who is engaged in activities of creation? Hence though in the form of Swan I could not attain the power of discrimination.

गमनेऽधो वराहस्य गतिर्भवति निश्चला ॥ धृतं वाराहरूपं हि विष्णुना वनचारिणा ॥ १४ ॥
gamane'dho varAhasya gatirbhavati nizcalA ॥ dhRtaM vArAharUpaM hi viSNunA vanacAriNA ॥ 14 ॥
A boar has the power of steadily going deep below. Hence Viṣṇu, the wanderer in the forest, assumed the form of the boar.

अथवा भवकल्पार्थं तद्रूपं हि प्रकल्पितम् ॥ विष्णुना च वराहस्य भुवनावनकारिणा ॥ १५ ॥
athavA bhavakalpArthaM tadrUpaM hi prakalpitam ॥ viSNunA ca varAhasya bhuvanAvanakAriNA ॥ 15 ॥
Or Viṣṇu, the protector of all the worlds assumed the form of a Boar to start a new Kalpa (Aeon).

यद्दिनं हि समारभ्य तद्रूपं धृतवान्हरिः ॥ तद्दिनं प्रति कल्पोऽसौ कल्पो वाराहसंज्ञकः ॥ १६ ॥
yaddinaM hi samArabhya tadrUpaM dhRtavAnhariH ॥ taddinaM prati kalpo'sau kalpo vArAhasaMjJakaH ॥ 16 ॥
Since the day he assumed the form of a Boar, the aeon by the title of Vārāha has started.

तदिच्छा वा यदा जाता ताभ्यां रूपं हि धारणे ॥ तद्दिनं प्रतिकल्पोऽसौ कल्पो वाराहसंज्ञक् ॥ १७ ॥
tadicchA vA yadA jAtA tAbhyAM rUpaM hi dhAraNe ॥ taddinaM pratikalpo'sau kalpo vArAhasaMjJak ॥ 17 ॥
Or the Vārāhakalpa can be considered to have started since the day we two decided to assume these forms.

इति प्रश्नोत्तरं दत्तं प्रस्तुतं शृणु नारद ॥ स्मृत्वा शिवपदांभोजं वक्ष्ये सृष्टिविधिं मुने ॥ १८ ॥
iti praznottaraM dattaM prastutaM zRNu nArada ॥ smRtvA zivapadAMbhojaM vakSye sRSTividhiM mune ॥ 18 ॥
O Nārada, thus I have answered your relevant question. O sage, now listen. I shall resume the context. Remembering the lotus-like feet of Śiva I shall explain to you the mode of Creation.

अंतर्हिते महादेवे त्वहं लोकपितामहः ॥ तदीयं वचनं कर्तुमध्यायन्ध्यानतत्परः ॥ १९ ॥
aMtarhite mahAdeve tvahaM lokapitAmahaH ॥ tadIyaM vacanaM kartumadhyAyandhyAnatatparaH ॥ 19 ॥
When God Śiva vanished, I, Pitāmaha (grandfather) of the worlds fell into contemplation pondering on the means of carrying out His words of direction.

नमस्कृत्य तदा शंभुं ज्ञानं प्राप्य हरेस्तदा ॥ आनंदं परमं गत्वा सृष्टिं कर्तुं मनो दधे ॥ 2-1-15-२० ॥
namaskRtya tadA zaMbhuM jJAnaM prApya harestadA ॥ AnaMdaM paramaM gatvA sRSTiM kartuM mano dadhe ॥ 2-1-15-20 ॥
Then after bowing down to Śiva, getting knowledge from Viṣṇu and attaining the highest bliss, I decided to start the work of creation.

विष्णुश्चापि तदा तत्र प्रणिपत्य सदाशिवम् ॥ उपदिश्य च मां तात ह्यंतर्धानमुपागतः ॥ २१ ॥
viSNuzcApi tadA tatra praNipatya sadAzivam ॥ upadizya ca mAM tAta hyaMtardhAnamupAgataH ॥ 21 ॥
After bowing to Śiva and instructing me, O dear one, Viṣṇu too vanished.

ब्रह्माण्डाच्च बहिर्गत्वा प्राप्य शम्भोरनुग्रहम् ॥ वैकुंठनगरं गत्वा तत्रोवास हरिस्सदा ॥ २२ ॥
brahmANDAcca bahirgatvA prApya zambhoranugraham ॥ vaikuMThanagaraM gatvA tatrovAsa harissadA ॥ 22 ॥
After getting the blessings of Śiva and going out of the cosmic egg, Viṣṇu made Vaikuṇṭha his permanent abode.

अहं स्मृत्वा शिवं तत्र विष्णुं वै सृष्टिकाम्यया ॥ पूर्वं सृष्टं जलं यच्च तत्रांजलिमुदाक्षिपम् ॥२३॥
ahaM smRtvA zivaM tatra viSNuM vai sRSTikAmyayA ॥ pUrvaM sRSTaM jalaM yacca tatrAMjalimudAkSipam ॥23॥
Desiring to create, I remembered Śiva and Viṣṇu. In the waters that had already been created I offered handfuls of water as libation.

अतोऽण्डमभवत्तत्र चतुर्विंशतिसंज्ञ कम् ॥ विराड्रूपमभूद्विप्र जलरूपमपश्यतः ॥ २४ ॥
ato'NDamabhavattatra caturviMzatisaMjJa kam ॥ virADrUpamabhUdvipra jalarUpamapazyataH ॥ 24 ॥
Then the cosmic egg arose consisting of twenty-four Principles॥ 2॥. O brahmin, then a splendid, huge form Virāṭ appeared and the form of waters was not seen.

ततस्संशयमापन्नस्तपस्तेपे सुदारुणम् ॥ द्वादशाब्दमहं तत्र विष्णुध्यानपरायणः ॥ २५ ॥
tatassaMzayamApannastapastepe sudAruNam ॥ dvAdazAbdamahaM tatra viSNudhyAnaparAyaNaH ॥ 25 ॥
Confusion arose in my mind and I performed a severe penance for twelve years meditating on Viṣṇu.

तस्मिंश्च समये तात प्रादुर्भूतो हरिस्स्वयम् ॥ मामुवाच महाप्रीत्या मदंगं संस्पृशन्मुदा ॥ २६ ॥
tasmiMzca samaye tAta prAdurbhUto harissvayam ॥ mAmuvAca mahAprItyA madaMgaM saMspRzanmudA ॥ 26 ॥
At that time, Viṣṇu appeared before me and touching my body lovingly and joyously he told me.

॥ विष्णुरुवाच ॥ ॥ वरं ब्रूहि प्रसन्नोऽस्मि नादेयो विद्यते तव ॥ ब्रह्मञ्छंभुप्रसादेन सर्वं दातुं समर्थकः ॥ २७ ॥
॥ viSNuruvAca ॥ ॥ varaM brUhi prasanno'smi nAdeyo vidyate tava ॥ brahmaJchaMbhuprasAdena sarvaM dAtuM samarthakaH ॥ 27 ॥
Viṣṇu said: O Brahmā, thanks to the favour of Śiva, I am capable of giving you everything. There is nothing which cannot be given to you. I am delighted. Tell me the boon (you wish to have).

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ ॥ युक्तमेतन्महाभाग दत्तोऽहं शंभुना च ते ॥ तदुक्तं याचते मेऽद्य देहि विष्णो नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ २८ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ ॥ yuktametanmahAbhAga datto'haM zaMbhunA ca te ॥ taduktaM yAcate me'dya dehi viSNo namo'stu te ॥ 28 ॥
Brahmā said: O Viṣṇu, the fortunate one, I have been entrusted to you by Śiva. Hence it is but proper that I should request you. Please give me who request you what He has told you (to give me). Obeisance be to you.

विराड्रूपमिदं ह्यंडं चतुर्विंशतिसंज्ञकम् ॥ न चैतन्यं भवत्यादौ जडीभूतं प्रदृश्यते ॥ २९ ॥
virADrUpamidaM hyaMDaM caturviMzatisaMjJakam ॥ na caitanyaM bhavatyAdau jaDIbhUtaM pradRzyate ॥ 29 ॥
This Virāṭ form of the cosmic egg consists of twenty-four principles. There is no sentience in it. It is insentient.

प्रादुर्भूतो भवानद्य शिवानुग्रहतो हरे ॥ प्राप्तं शंकरसंभूत्या ह्यण्डं चैतन्यमावह ॥ 2-1-15-३० ॥
prAdurbhUto bhavAnadya zivAnugrahato hare ॥ prAptaM zaMkarasaMbhUtyA hyaNDaM caitanyamAvaha ॥ 2-1-15-30 ॥
O Viṣṇu, you have now appeared before me; thanks to the blessings of Śiva. Confer sentience on this cosmic egg originating from Śiva’s power.

इत्युक्ते च महाविष्णुश्शंभोराज्ञापरायणः ॥ अनंतरूपमास्थाय प्रविवेश तदंडकम् ॥ ॥ ३१ ॥
ityukte ca mahAviSNuzzaMbhorAjJAparAyaNaH ॥ anaMtarUpamAsthAya praviveza tadaMDakam ॥ ॥ 31 ॥
When I said this, the great Viṣṇu adhering strictly to the directives of Śiva assumed infinite forms and entered the cosmic egg.

सहस्रशीर्षा पुरुषस्सहस्राक्षः सहस्रपात् ॥ स भूमिं सर्वतस्पृत्वा तदण्डं व्याप्तवानिति ॥ ३२ ॥
sahasrazIrSA puruSassahasrAkSaH sahasrapAt ॥ sa bhUmiM sarvataspRtvA tadaNDaM vyAptavAniti ॥ 32 ॥
Viṣṇu with a thousand heads, a thousand eyes and a thousand feet encompassed the cosmic egg touching the earth everywhere.

प्रविष्टे विष्णुना तस्मिन्नण्डे सम्यक्स्तुतेन मे ॥ सचेतनमभूदण्डं चतुर्विंशतिसंज्ञकम् ॥ ३३ ॥
praviSTe viSNunA tasminnaNDe samyakstutena me ॥ sacetanamabhUdaNDaM caturviMzatisaMjJakam ॥ 33 ॥
When Viṣṇu who was properly eulogised by me entered it, the cosmic egg consisting of the twenty-four principles became sentient.

पातालादि समारभ्य सप्तलोकाधिपः स्वयम् ॥ राजते स्म हरिस्तत्र वैराजः पुरुषः प्रभुः ॥ ३४ ॥
pAtAlAdi samArabhya saptalokAdhipaH svayam ॥ rAjate sma haristatra vairAjaH puruSaH prabhuH ॥ 34 ॥
Viṣṇu shone as the great Being, the lord of the seven worlds beginning with Pātāla.

कैलासनगरं रम्यं सर्वोपरि विराजितम् ॥ निवासार्थं निजस्यैव पंचवक्त्र श्चकार ह ॥३५॥
kailAsanagaraM ramyaM sarvopari virAjitam ॥ nivAsArthaM nijasyaiva paMcavaktra zcakAra ha ॥35॥
The five-faced lord Śiva created for His residence the beautiful city of Kailāsa that shone above all.

ब्रह्मांडस्य तथा नाशे वैकुण्ठस्य च तस्य च ॥ कदाचिदेव देवर्षे नाशो नास्ति तयोरिह ॥ ३६ ॥
brahmAMDasya tathA nAze vaikuNThasya ca tasya ca ॥ kadAcideva devarSe nAzo nAsti tayoriha ॥ 36 ॥
O celestial sage, Kailāsa and Vaikuṇṭha will never be destroyed even if the whole cosmic egg is destroyed.

सत्यं पदमुपाश्रित्य स्थितोऽहं मुनिसत्तम ॥ सृष्टिकामोऽभवं तात महादेवाज्ञया ह्यहम् ॥३७॥
satyaM padamupAzritya sthito'haM munisattama ॥ sRSTikAmo'bhavaM tAta mahAdevAjJayA hyaham ॥37॥
O foremost among sages, I am staying in Satyaloka॥ 6॥. O dear one, I desired the activity of creation at the bidding of Siva.

सिसृक्षोरथ मे प्रादुरभवत्पापसर्गकः। अविद्यापंचकस्तात बुद्धिपूर्वस्तमोपमः ॥ ३८ ॥
sisRkSoratha me prAdurabhavatpApasargakaH। avidyApaMcakastAta buddhipUrvastamopamaH ॥ 38 ॥
Even as I stood desirous of creation, the Evil creation, viz. the set of five Illusions॥ 7॥ appeared before me. It was of the nature of darkness endowed with knowledge.

ततः प्रसन्नचित्तोऽहमसृजं स्थावराभिधम् ॥ मुख्यसर्गं च निस्संगमध्यायं शंभुशासनात् ॥ ३९ ॥
tataH prasannacitto'hamasRjaM sthAvarAbhidham ॥ mukhyasargaM ca nissaMgamadhyAyaM zaMbhuzAsanAt ॥ 39 ॥
Then I created the chief creation॥ 8॥ consisting of immobile beings with a delightful mind. At the bidding of Śiva, I continued my meditation in a detached spirit.

While creating it I had thought it would be an aspirant after the Ātman. But the creation Tiryaksrotas turned out to be full of misery. And it was not an aspirant.
