RSaya UcuH ॥ ॥ vyAsaziSya mahAbhAga kathaya tvaM pramANataH ॥ kaiH puSpaiH pUjitazzaMbhuH kiM kiM yacchati vai phalam ॥1॥
The ṛṣis said: O disciple of Vyāsa, O fortunate one, please explain to us authoritatively the fruits granted by Śiva for the different worships with different flowers.

Sūta said: Listen attentively, O sages like Shaunaka, as I narrate with great pleasure the determination regarding the offering of flowers.

This very procedure was inquired about by the great sage Nārada, who, with utmost affection, explained the determination regarding the offering of flowers.

brahmovAca॥ kamalairbilvapatraizca zatapatraistathA punaH ॥ zaMkhapuSpaistathA devaM lakSmIkAmo'rcayecchivam ॥4॥
Brahmā said: A person desirous of wealth shall worship lord Śiva with lotuses, Bilva leaves, petals of lotuses or with Śaṅkha flowers.

O Brahmin, if a devotee worships Śiva with a hundred flowers, his sins shall be wiped off and the devotee shall become rich.

viMzatiH kamalAnAM tu prasthamekamudAhRtam ॥ bilvo dalasahasreNa prasthArddhaM paribhASitam ॥ 6 ॥
Twenty full lotuses constitute one prastha measure. A Thousand Bilva leaves constitute half a Prastha.

Petals of lotuses, a thousand in number constitute half a prastha. Ten Ṭaṅka weight constitutes one pala and sixteen palas make one prastha.

अनेनैव तु मानेन तुलामारोपयेद्यदा॥ सर्वान्कामानवाप्नोति निष्कामश्चेच्छिवो भवेत् ॥८॥
anenaiva tu mAnena tulAmAropayedyadA॥ sarvAnkAmAnavApnoti niSkAmazcecchivo bhavet ॥8॥
Flowers for worship shall be weighed in the balance according to this calculation. The worship thus duly performed shall accord all cherished desires. If the devotee worships with no specific desires he will become Śiva himself.

rAjyasya kAmuko yo vai pArthivAnAM ca pUjayA ॥ toSayecchaMkaraM devaM dazakoSTyA munIzvarAH ॥ 9 ॥
A person desiring a kingdom should worship Śaṅkara with the offerings of kings; the sages say this pleases Lord Shiva.

liMgaM zivaM tathA puSpamakhaNDaM taMdulaM tathA ॥ carcitaM caMdanenaiva jaladhArAM tathA punaH ॥ 2-1-14-10 ॥
Worship the Śiva Linga with unbroken flowers, rice, sandalwood paste, and water offerings.

Alternatively, worship with the best bilva leaves, a replica of the deity, and the sacred mantra.

zaMkhapuSpaistathA proktaM vizeSeNa purAtanaiH ॥ sarvakAmaphalaM divyaM paratrehApi sarvathA ॥12॥
Worship with conch flowers, as prescribed by the ancients, grants all divine desires, both here and hereafter.

धूपं दीपं च नैवेद्यमर्घं चारार्तिक तथा ॥ प्रदक्षिणां नमस्कारं क्षमापनविसर्जने ॥ १३ ॥
dhUpaM dIpaM ca naivedyamarghaM cArArtika tathA ॥ pradakSiNAM namaskAraM kSamApanavisarjane ॥ 13 ॥
Offer incense, lamps, food offerings, arati, circumambulation, salutations, and the release of forgiveness.

kRtvA sAMgaM tathA bhojyaM kRtaM yena bhavediha ॥ tasya vai sarvathA rAjyaM zaMkaraH pradadAti ca ॥ 14 ॥
By performing these with devotion and offerings, One attains all desires, and Lord Shankar grants the kingdom.

प्रधान्यकामुको यो वै तदर्द्धेनार्चयेत्पुमान् ॥ कारागृहगतो यो वै लक्षेनैवार्चयेद्धनम् ॥ १५॥
pradhAnyakAmuko yo vai tadarddhenArcayetpumAn ॥ kArAgRhagato yo vai lakSenaivArcayeddhanam ॥ 15॥
A person who yearns for important positions shall worship half the former number. A person desiring release from prison shall worship a hundred thousand liṅgas of Śiva.

रोगग्रस्तो यदा स्याद्वै तदर्द्धेनार्चयेच्छिवम् ॥ कन्याकामो भवेद्यो वै तदर्द्धेन शिवं पुनः॥१६॥
rogagrasto yadA syAdvai tadarddhenArcayecchivam ॥ kanyAkAmo bhavedyo vai tadarddhena zivaM punaH॥16॥
A person afflicted by ailments shall worship half that number. A person desiring a daughter shall worship half that number.

विद्याकामस्तथा यः स्यात्तदर्द्धेनार्चयेच्छिवम् ॥ वाणीकामो भवेद्यो वै घृतेनैवार्चयेच्छिवम् ॥ १७ ॥
vidyAkAmastathA yaH syAttadarddhenArcayecchivam ॥ vANIkAmo bhavedyo vai ghRtenaivArcayecchivam ॥ 17 ॥
A person desirous of learning shall worship half that number. A person desirous of eloquence shall worship Śiva with ghee.

उच्चाटनार्थं शत्रूणां तन्मितेनैव पूजनम् ॥ मारणे वै तु लक्षेण मोहने तु तदर्धतः ॥ १८ ॥
uccATanArthaM zatrUNAM tanmitenaiva pUjanam ॥ mAraNe vai tu lakSeNa mohane tu tadardhataH ॥ 18 ॥
In order to drive out enemies, the number of worship is the same as before. For exterminating enemies, worship is for a hundred thousand times and for enchantment worship is half that number.

सामंतानां जये चैव कोटिपूजा प्रशस्यते ॥ राज्ञामयुतसंख्यं च वशीकरणकर्मणि ॥१९॥
sAmaMtAnAM jaye caiva koTipUjA prazasyate ॥ rAjJAmayutasaMkhyaM ca vazIkaraNakarmaNi ॥19॥
For the conquest of vassal kings, worship for ten million times is recommended. For keeping vassal kings under influence the same for ten thousand times is recommended.

यशसे च तथा संख्या वाहनाद्यैः सहस्रिका ॥ मुक्तिकामोर्चयेच्छंभुं पंचकोट्या सुभक्तितः ॥ 2-1-14-२० ॥
yazase ca tathA saMkhyA vAhanAdyaiH sahasrikA ॥ muktikAmorcayecchaMbhuM paMcakoTyA subhaktitaH ॥ 2-1-14-20 ॥
For achieving glory with plenty of vehicles, worship for a thousand times shall be performed. A person desiring salvation shall worship Śiva five crores of times with deep devotion.

ज्ञानार्थी पूजयेत्कोट्या शंकरं लोक शंकरम् ॥ शिवदर्शनकामो वै तदर्धेन प्रपूजयेत् ॥ २१ ॥
jJAnArthI pUjayetkoTyA zaMkaraM loka zaMkaram ॥ zivadarzanakAmo vai tadardhena prapUjayet ॥ 21 ॥
A person seeking knowledge shall worship Śiva, the benefactor of the world, ten million times. A person desiring Śiva’s vision shall worship Him five million times.

तथा मृत्युंजयो जाप्यः कामनाफलरूपतः ॥ पंचलक्षा जपा यर्हि प्रत्यक्षं तु भवेच्छिवः ॥ २२ ॥
tathA mRtyuMjayo jApyaH kAmanAphalarUpataH ॥ paMcalakSA japA yarhi pratyakSaM tu bhavecchivaH ॥ 22 ॥
The Mṛtyuñjaya mantra shall be repeated half a million times when Śiva shall be visible to the devotee and fulfil his desires.

लक्षेण भजते कश्चिद्द्वितीये जातिसंभवः ॥ तृतीये कामनालाभश्चतुर्थे तं प्रपश्यति ॥ २३ ॥
lakSeNa bhajate kazciddvitIye jAtisaMbhavaH ॥ tRtIye kAmanAlAbhazcaturthe taM prapazyati ॥ 23 ॥
If a person repeats the mantra a hundred thousand times and begins a second instalment he will be lifted to a higher caste. When he completes the third hundred thousand times all his worldly desires will be fulfilled. In the fourth Lakṣa he will be able to see the lord.

पंचमं च यदा लक्षं फलं यच्छत्यसंशयम् ॥ अनेनैव तु मंत्रेण दशलक्षे फलं भवेत् ॥ २४ ॥
paMcamaM ca yadA lakSaM phalaM yacchatyasaMzayam ॥ anenaiva tu maMtreNa dazalakSe phalaM bhavet ॥ 24 ॥
When the fifty Lakṣa is completed, the lord will confer on him all benefits. When the same mantra is repeated a million times, the merit is tremendous.

मुक्तिकामो भवेद्यो वै दर्भैश्च पूजनं चरेत् ॥ लक्षसंख्या तु सर्वत्र ज्ञातव्या ऋषिसत्तम ॥ २५ ॥
muktikAmo bhavedyo vai darbhaizca pUjanaM caret ॥ lakSasaMkhyA tu sarvatra jJAtavyA RSisattama ॥ 25 ॥
A person desirous of liberation shall worship him with Darbhas. O best of sages, the number everywhere is a hundred thousand times.

आयुष्कामो भवेद्यो वै दूर्वाभिः पूजनश्चरेत् ॥ पुत्रकामो भवेद्यो वै धत्तूरकुसुमैश्चरेत् ॥२६॥
AyuSkAmo bhavedyo vai dUrvAbhiH pUjanazcaret ॥ putrakAmo bhavedyo vai dhattUrakusumaizcaret ॥26॥
A person desirous of long life shall worship him with Dūrvā grass. A person desirous of sons shall worship him with Dhattūra flowers.

रक्तदण्डश्च धत्तूरः पूजने शुभदः स्मृतः ॥ अगस्त्यकुसुमैश्चैव पूजकस्य महद्यशः ॥२७॥
raktadaNDazca dhattUraH pUjane zubhadaH smRtaH ॥ agastyakusumaizcaiva pUjakasya mahadyazaH ॥27॥
A Dhattūra plant with red stem is specially auspicious for worship. A worshipper using Agastya flowers will earn great fame.

भुक्तिमुक्तिफलं तस्य तुलस्याः पूजयेद्यदि ॥ अर्कपुष्पैः प्रतापश्च कुब्जकल्हारकैस्तथा ॥ २८ ॥
bhuktimuktiphalaM tasya tulasyAH pUjayedyadi ॥ arkapuSpaiH pratApazca kubjakalhArakaistathA ॥ 28 ॥
Worldly pleasures and salvation will be secured by a person who worships with Tulasī. Great valour can be secured by worshipping with Arka or Kubjakalhāra flowers.

जपाकुसुमपूजा तु शत्रूणां मृत्युदा स्मृता ॥ रोगोच्चाटनकानीह करवीराणि वै क्रमात् ॥२९॥
japAkusumapUjA tu zatrUNAM mRtyudA smRtA ॥ rogoccATanakAnIha karavIrANi vai kramAt ॥29॥
The worship with Japā flowers (China rose) brings about the death of enemies. Karavīra flowers drive away all ailments.

बंधुकैर्भूषणावाप्तिर्जात्यावाहान्न संशयः ॥ अतसीपुष्पकैर्देवं विष्णुवल्लभतामियात्॥ ॥2-1-14-३०॥
baMdhukairbhUSaNAvAptirjAtyAvAhAnna saMzayaH ॥ atasIpuSpakairdevaM viSNuvallabhatAmiyAt॥ ॥2-1-14-30॥
By worshipping with Bandhūka flowers the devotee will get ornaments; with Jātī flowers he will acquire good vehicles; with Atasī flowers he will attain favour of Viṣṇu.

शमीपत्रैस्तथा मुक्तिः प्राप्यते पुरुषेण च ॥ मल्लिकाकुसुमैर्दत्तैः स्त्रियं शुभतरां शिवः ॥३१॥
zamIpatraistathA muktiH prApyate puruSeNa ca ॥ mallikAkusumairdattaiH striyaM zubhatarAM zivaH ॥31॥
With Śamī leaves he will secure salvation. With Mallikā flowers he will secure an auspicious woman.

यूथिकाकुसुमैश्शस्यैर्गृहं नैव विमुच्यते ॥ कर्णिकारैस्तथा वस्त्रसंपत्तिर्जायते नृणाम् ॥३२॥
yUthikAkusumaizzasyairgRhaM naiva vimucyate ॥ karNikAraistathA vastrasaMpattirjAyate nRNAm ॥32॥
With the splendid Yūthikā flowers he will not be deprived of a house. With Karṇikāra flowers he will secure plenty of garments.

निर्गुण्डीकुसुमैर्लोके मनो निर्मलतां व्रजेत् ॥ बिल्वपत्रैस्तथा लक्षैः सर्वान्कामानवाप्नुयात् ॥३३॥
nirguNDIkusumairloke mano nirmalatAM vrajet ॥ bilvapatraistathA lakSaiH sarvAnkAmAnavApnuyAt ॥33॥
With Nirguṇḍi ॥ Nirguṇḍī?॥ flowers, his mind becomes pure in the world. A hundred thousand Bilva leaves used for worship will secure the fulfilment of all desires.

शृङ्गारहारपुष्पैस्तु वर्द्धते सुख सम्पदा ॥ ऋतुजातानि पुष्पाणि मुक्तिदानि न संशयः ॥ ३४ ॥
zRGgArahArapuSpaistu varddhate sukha sampadA ॥ RtujAtAni puSpANi muktidAni na saMzayaH ॥ 34 ॥
Use of lovely flowers in the form of garlands increases happiness and wealth. Use of seasonal flowers for worship yields liberation. There is no doubt in this.

राजिकाकुसुमानीह शत्रूणां मृत्युदानि च ॥ एषां लक्षं शिवे दद्याद्दद्याच्च विपुलं फलम् ॥३५॥
rAjikAkusumAnIha zatrUNAM mRtyudAni ca ॥ eSAM lakSaM zive dadyAddadyAcca vipulaM phalam ॥35॥
The flowers of Rājikā bring about the death of enemies. A hundred thousand Rājikā flowers shall be used for the worship of Śiva. The benefit accruing will be very great.

विद्यते कुसुमं तन्न यन्नैव शिववल्लभम्॥ चंपकं केतकं हित्वा त्वन्यत्सर्वं समर्पयेत् ॥ ३६॥
vidyate kusumaM tanna yannaiva zivavallabham॥ caMpakaM ketakaM hitvA tvanyatsarvaM samarpayet ॥ 36॥
Excepting the Campaka and the Ketaka there is no flower which does not appeal to Śiva. All other flowers can be used for worshipping Him.

अतः परं च धान्यानां पूजने शंकरस्य च ॥ प्रमाणं च फलं सर्वं प्रीत्या शृणु च सत्तम ॥ ३७ ॥
ataH paraM ca dhAnyAnAM pUjane zaMkarasya ca ॥ pramANaM ca phalaM sarvaM prItyA zRNu ca sattama ॥ 37 ॥
Now, O excellent one, listen to the quantity of and the benefit accruing from grains and pulses in their use for worship of Śiva.

तंदुलारोपणे नॄणां लक्ष्मी वृद्धिः प्रजायते ॥ अखण्डितविधौ विप्र सम्यग्भक्त्या शिवोपरि ॥३८॥
taMdulAropaNe nRRNAM lakSmI vRddhiH prajAyate ॥ akhaNDitavidhau vipra samyagbhaktyA zivopari ॥38॥
By offering rice grains during worship, people attain an increase in wealth and prosperity (Lakṣmī). O learned one (vipra), when this offering is made upon Lord Shiva with unbroken (continuous) procedure and with true devotion, it yields auspicious results.

षट्केनैव तु प्रस्थानां तदर्धेन तथा पुनः ॥ पलद्वयं तथा लक्षमानेन समदाहृतम् ॥३९॥
SaTkenaiva tu prasthAnAM tadardhena tathA punaH ॥ paladvayaM tathA lakSamAnena samadAhRtam ॥39॥
Six prasthas (a traditional unit of measurement) are considered as the standard measure, or even half of that is acceptable. Likewise, two palas (a smaller unit of weight) are also included — all these together constitute the proper measure for one laksha (100,000) offering, as prescribed in the scriptures.
