brahmovAca ॥ evaM tayormunizreSTha darzanaM kAMkSamANayoH ॥ vigarvayozca surayoH sadA nau sthitayormune ॥ 1॥
Brahmā said: O best of sages, thus those two divine beings, desiring a vision (of the Supreme), and filled with pride, remained constantly (in that place), O sage.

दयालुरभवच्छंभुर्दीनानां प्रतिपालकः ॥ गर्विणां गर्वहर्ता च सवेषां प्रभुरव्ययः ॥२॥
dayAlurabhavacchaMbhurdInAnAM pratipAlakaH ॥ garviNAM garvahartA ca saveSAM prabhuravyayaH ॥2॥
He is the compassionate Śambhu, the protector of the weak; He is the destroyer of pride in the arrogant, the Lord of all beings, the imperishable one.

tadA samabhavattatra nAdo vai zabdalakSaNaH ॥ omomiti surazreSThAtsuvyaktaH plutalakSaNaH ॥3॥
There arose the sound “Oṃ Oṃ” in the prolated accent.॥ 1॥ It was very clear. The divine sound in the form of a word came out from the most excellent of Gods.

किमिदं त्विति संचिंत्य मया तिष्ठन्महास्वनः ॥ विष्णुस्सर्वसुराराध्यो निर्वैरस्तुष्टचेतसा ॥ ४ ॥
kimidaM tviti saMciMtya mayA tiSThanmahAsvanaH ॥ viSNussarvasurArAdhyo nirvairastuSTacetasA ॥ 4 ॥
Thinking, 'What is this?' I remained there, hearing the great sound. Vishnu, who is worshipped by all the gods, is without enemies and content in heart.

लिंगस्य दक्षिणे भागे तथापश्यत्सनातनम् ॥ आद्यं वर्णमकाराख्यमुकारं चोत्तरं ततः ॥ ५ ॥
liMgasya dakSiNe bhAge tathApazyatsanAtanam ॥ AdyaM varNamakArAkhyamukAraM cottaraM tataH ॥ 5 ॥
On the right side of the Śiva-linga, they saw the eternal one, The primordial sound ‘Aum’ manifested, with the first letter ‘A’ and the last letter ‘U’.

मकारं मध्यतश्चैव नादमंतेऽस्य चोमिति ॥ सूर्यमंडलवद्दृष्ट्वा वर्णमाद्यं तु दक्षिणे ॥६॥
makAraM madhyatazcaiva nAdamaMte'sya comiti ॥ sUryamaMDalavaddRSTvA varNamAdyaM tu dakSiNe ॥6॥
He saw the syllable “M” in the middle and Nāda (the mystical sound) in the form “Oṃ” in the end. He saw the first syllable on the right like the blazing sphere of the sun.

उत्तरे पावकप्रख्यमुकारमृषि सत्तम ॥ शीतांशुमण्डलप्रख्यं मकारं तस्य मध्यतः ॥७॥
uttare pAvakaprakhyamukAramRSi sattama ॥ zItAMzumaNDalaprakhyaM makAraM tasya madhyataH ॥7॥
O foremost of sages, thereafter he saw the syllable “U” dazzling like fire. In the middle he saw the syllable “M” glittering like the lunar sphere.

तस्योपरि तदाऽपश्यच्छुद्धस्फटिकसुप्रभम् ॥ तुरीयातीतममलं निष्कलं निरुपद्रवम् ॥ ८ ॥
tasyopari tadA'pazyacchuddhasphaTikasuprabham ॥ turIyAtItamamalaM niSkalaM nirupadravam ॥ 8 ॥
Above that what he saw was the supreme Brahman, the greatest refuge. It had the lustre of the pure crystal. It was the pure Being beyond the Fourth (Turīya), the unsullied & free from extraneous harassment.

निर्द्वंद्वं केवलं शून्यं बाह्याभ्यंतरवर्जितम् ॥ स बाह्यभ्यंतरे चैव बाह्याभ्यंतरसंस्थितम् ॥ ९ ॥
nirdvaMdvaM kevalaM zUnyaM bAhyAbhyaMtaravarjitam ॥ sa bAhyabhyaMtare caiva bAhyAbhyaMtarasaMsthitam ॥ 9 ॥
It was free from mutually clashing opposites. It was single (isolated), void, free from exterior and interior though stationed in the exterior and the interior.

AdimadhyAMtarahitamAnaMdasyApikAraNam ॥ satyamAnandamamRtaM paraM brahmaparAyaNam ॥ 2-1-8-10 ॥
Devoid of beginning, middle and end, the primordial cause of Bliss, the truth, The Bliss and the Nectar.

kuta evAtra saMbhUtaH parIkSAvo'gnisaMbhavam ॥ adhogamiSyAmyanalastaMbhasyAnupamasya ca ॥ 11 ॥
From where indeed has this arisen? I shall examine whether it is born of fire. I will go downward to explore this matchless pillar of flame.

vedazabdobhayAvezaM vizvAtmAnaM vyaciMtayat ॥ tadA'bhavadRSistatra RSessAratamaM smRtam ॥12॥
Viṣṇu thus meditated on the universal soul enveloped by the two Vedic sounds and wished to examine the source whence the Fire-column arose and to go deep down the unequalled fiery column. Then there came a sage who told him the essence of the truth.

tenaiva RSiNA viSNurjJAtavAnparamezvaram ॥ mahAdevaM paraM brahma zabdabrahmatanuM param ॥13॥
Viṣṇu realised that the sage himself was the great lord and the supreme Brahman embodied in the Śabda Brahman. (i.e. the mystic syllable Om).

चिंतया रहितो रुद्रो वाचो यन्मनसा सह ॥ अप्राप्य तन्निवर्तंते वाच्यस्त्वेकाक्षरेण सः ॥१४॥
ciMtayA rahito rudro vAco yanmanasA saha ॥ aprApya tannivartaMte vAcyastvekAkSareNa saH ॥14॥
The Brahman is Rudra free from worries. The words and the mind are incapable of comprehending it; without reaching it they return. It can be expressed by the single-syllabled mantra “Om”.

एकाक्षरेण तद्वाक्यमृतं परमकारणम् ॥ सत्यमानन्दममृतं परं ब्रह्म परात्परम् ॥ १५ ॥
ekAkSareNa tadvAkyamRtaM paramakAraNam ॥ satyamAnandamamRtaM paraM brahma parAtparam ॥ 15 ॥
The supreme Brahman, the Truth, the Bliss, the Amṛta, the greatest of the great and the ultimate cause can be expressed by the single-syllabled mantra.

ekAkSarAdakArAkhyAdbhagavAnbIjakoNDajaH ॥ ekAkSarAdukArAkhyAddhariH paramakAraNam॥16॥
The single syllable “A” is the source of the lord Brahmā. The single syllable “U” is the source of Viṣṇu, the ultimate cause.

एकाक्षरान्मकाराख्याद्भगवान्नीललोहितः ॥ सर्गकर्ता त्वकाराख्यो ह्युकाराख्यस्तु मोहकः ॥१७॥
ekAkSarAnmakArAkhyAdbhagavAnnIlalohitaH ॥ sargakartA tvakArAkhyo hyukArAkhyastu mohakaH ॥17॥
The single syllable “M” is the source of Rudra. The creator is expressed by the letter “A”. The enchanter is expressed by the letter “U”.

मकाराख्यस्तु यो नित्यमनुग्रहकरोऽभवत्॥ मकाराख्यो विभुर्बीजी ह्यकारो बीज उच्यते ॥ १८ ॥
makArAkhyastu yo nityamanugrahakaro'bhavat॥ makArAkhyo vibhurbIjI hyakAro bIja ucyate ॥ 18 ॥
The being expressed by the letter “M” blesses always. It is all-pervasive and progenitor; the letter “A” is the seed.

उकाराख्यो हरिर्योनिः प्रधानपुरुषेश्वरः ॥ बीजी च बीजं तद्योनिर्नादाख्यश्च महेश्वरः ॥ १९ ॥
ukArAkhyo hariryoniH pradhAnapuruSezvaraH ॥ bIjI ca bIjaM tadyonirnAdAkhyazca mahezvaraH ॥ 19 ॥
The being expressed by the letter “U” is Viṣṇu. It is the source, the receptacle, the lord of primordial nature and primordial being, the progenitor, the seed, source and sound. All these constitute Lord Śiva.

बीजी विभज्य चात्मानं स्वेच्छया तु व्यवस्थितः ॥ अस्य लिंगादभूद्बीजमकारो बीजिनः प्रभोः ॥ 2-1-8-२० ॥
bIjI vibhajya cAtmAnaM svecchayA tu vyavasthitaH ॥ asya liMgAdabhUdbIjamakAro bIjinaH prabhoH ॥ 2-1-8-20 ॥
The progenitor is stationed after dividing itself. From the liṅga of the progenitor, the lord, arose the seed—the syllable “A”.

उकारयोनौ निःक्षिप्तमवर्द्धत समंततः॥ सौवर्णमभवच्चांडमावेद्य तदलक्षणम् ॥ २१ ॥
ukArayonau niHkSiptamavarddhata samaMtataH॥ sauvarNamabhavaccAMDamAvedya tadalakSaNam ॥ 21 ॥
The Bīja being deposited in the Yoni, the letter “U” began to increase all round. It became a golden egg. It was something known which could not be delineated.

अनेकाब्दं तथा चाप्सु दिव्यमंडं व्यवस्थितम्॥ ततो वर्षसहस्रांते द्विधाकृतमजोद्भवम् ॥२२॥
anekAbdaM tathA cApsu divyamaMDaM vyavasthitam॥ tato varSasahasrAMte dvidhAkRtamajodbhavam ॥22॥
The divine egg floated in the waters for many years. Then at the end of a thousand years, it split into two giving birth to Brahmā.

अंडमप्सु स्थितं साक्षाद्व्याघातेनेश्वरेण तु ॥ तथास्य सुशुभं हैमं कपालं चोर्द्ध्वसंस्थितम् ॥२३॥
aMDamapsu sthitaM sAkSAdvyAghAtenezvareNa tu ॥ tathAsya suzubhaM haimaM kapAlaM corddhvasaMsthitam ॥23॥
The egg floating in the waters on being hit by Īśvara split into two. The auspicious golden upper lid became the upper region and the lower one became the Earth of five characteristics.

जज्ञे सा द्यौस्तदपरं पृथिवी पंचलक्षणा ॥ तस्मादंडाद्भवो जज्ञे ककाराख्यश्चतुर्मुखः ॥२४॥
jajJe sA dyaustadaparaM pRthivI paMcalakSaNA ॥ tasmAdaMDAdbhavo jajJe kakArAkhyazcaturmukhaH ॥24॥
From (the inner part of) the egg was born the four-faced lord (Brahmā) expressed by the letter “KA”.

स स्रष्टा सर्वलोकानां स एव त्रिविधः प्रभुः ॥ एवमोमोमिति प्रोक्तमित्याहुर्यजुषां वराः ॥२५॥
sa sraSTA sarvalokAnAM sa eva trividhaH prabhuH ॥ evamomomiti proktamityAhuryajuSAM varAH ॥25॥
He is the creator of all the worlds. He alone is the lord manifesting in three forms. Persons well-versed in the Yajurveda call it Oṃ Oṃ.

यजुषां वचनं श्रुत्वा ऋचः समानि सादरम् ॥ एवमेव हरे ब्रह्मन्नित्याहुश्चावयोस्तदा ॥२६॥
yajuSAM vacanaM zrutvA RcaH samAni sAdaram ॥ evameva hare brahmannityAhuzcAvayostadA ॥26॥
On hearing the words of the Yajurveda, both the Ṛgveda and the Sāmaveda respectfully called us then Viṣṇu and Brahmā.

ततो विज्ञाय देवेशं यथावच्छक्तिसंभवैः ॥ मंत्रं महेश्वरं देवं तुष्टाव सुमहोदयम्॥२७॥
tato vijJAya devezaM yathAvacchaktisaMbhavaiH ॥ maMtraM mahezvaraM devaM tuSTAva sumahodayam॥27॥
Then realising the lord of the Gods we eulogised, as far as we could, Lord Śiva, the cause of great achievement.

एतस्मिन्नंतरेऽन्यच्च रूपमद्भुतसुन्दरम् ॥ ददर्श च मया सार्द्धं भगवान्विश्वपालकः ॥ २८ ॥
etasminnaMtare'nyacca rUpamadbhutasundaram ॥ dadarza ca mayA sArddhaM bhagavAnvizvapAlakaH ॥ 28 ॥
Viṣṇu, the protector of the universe, in the meantime, saw another wonderfully beautiful form, along with me.

पंचवक्त्रं दशभुजं गौरकर्पूरवन्मुने ॥ नानाकांति समायुक्तं नानाभूषणभूषितम् ॥ २९ ॥
paMcavaktraM dazabhujaM gaurakarpUravanmune ॥ nAnAkAMti samAyuktaM nAnAbhUSaNabhUSitam ॥ 29 ॥
On seeing that wonderful form, Viṣṇu and I became satisfied. The form had five faces, ten arms, and a complexion white as camphor, O sage. It had diverse brilliant features. It was decorated in different ornaments.

महोदारं महावीर्यं महापुरुषलणम् ॥ तं दृष्ट्वा परमं रूपं कृतार्थोऽभून्मया हरिः ॥2-1-8-३०॥
mahodAraM mahAvIryaM mahApuruSalaNam ॥ taM dRSTvA paramaM rUpaM kRtArtho'bhUnmayA hariH ॥2-1-8-30॥
It was highly liberal and endowed with great prowess. It had all the characteristics of a great man.

अथ प्रसन्नो भगवान्महेशः परमेश्वरः ॥ दिव्यं शब्दमयं रूपमाख्याय प्रहसन्स्थितः ॥ ३१ ॥
atha prasanno bhagavAnmahezaH paramezvaraH ॥ divyaM zabdamayaM rUpamAkhyAya prahasansthitaH ॥ 31 ॥
Thereafter, the lord Śiva was pleased. Revealing his form embedded in letters He laughingly stood before us.

अकारस्तस्य मूर्द्धा हि ललाटो दीर्घ उच्यते ॥ इकारो दक्षिणं नेत्रमीकारो वामलोचनम् ॥३२॥॥
akArastasya mUrddhA hi lalATo dIrgha ucyate ॥ ikAro dakSiNaM netramIkAro vAmalocanam ॥32॥॥
The short letter “A” is His head. The long letter “A” is His forehead. The letter “I” is His right eye and the letter “Ī” His left eye.

उकारो दक्षिणं श्रोत्रमूकारो वाम उच्यते ॥ ऋकारो दक्षिणं तस्य कपोलं परमेष्ठिनः ॥३३॥
ukAro dakSiNaM zrotramUkAro vAma ucyate ॥ RkAro dakSiNaM tasya kapolaM parameSThinaH ॥33॥
The letter “U” is His right ear and the letter “Ū” His left ear. The letter “Ṛ” is the right cheek of that great lord.

वामं कपोलमूकारो लृ लॄ नासापुटे उभे॥ एकारश्चोष्ठ ऊर्द्ध्वश्च ह्यैकारस्त्वधरो विभोः ॥३४॥
vAmaM kapolamUkAro lR lRR nAsApuTe ubhe॥ ekArazcoSTha Urddhvazca hyaikArastvadharo vibhoH ॥34॥
“Ṝ” is His left cheek. The two letters “ḷ” “ḹ”, are His nostrils. The letter “E” is His upper lip and the letter “AI” is His lower lip.

ओकारश्च तथौकारो दन्तपंक्तिद्वयं क्रमात् ॥ अमस्तु तालुनी तस्य देवदेवस्य शूलिनः ॥३५॥
okArazca tathaukAro dantapaMktidvayaM kramAt ॥ amastu tAlunI tasya devadevasya zUlinaH ॥35॥
The letter “O” and the letter “AU” are respectively the two rows of his teeth. The letters “AṂ” and “AḤ” ॥ Anusvāra and Visarga॥ are his palates.

कादिपंचाक्षराण्यस्य पञ्च हस्ताश्च दक्षिणे ॥ चादिपंचाक्षराण्येवं पंच हस्तास्तु वामतः ॥ ३६ ॥
kAdipaMcAkSarANyasya paJca hastAzca dakSiNe ॥ cAdipaMcAkSarANyevaM paMca hastAstu vAmataH ॥ 36 ॥
The five letters beginning with KA ॥ ie KA, KHA, GA, GHA and ṄA॥ are His five hands on the right side. The five letters beginning with CA ॥ i.e. CA, CH, JA, JHA and ÑA॥ are His hands on the left side.

टादिपंचाक्षरं पादास्तादिपंचाक्षरं तथा ॥ पकार उदरं तस्य फकारः पार्श्व उच्यते ॥३७॥
TAdipaMcAkSaraM pAdAstAdipaMcAkSaraM tathA ॥ pakAra udaraM tasya phakAraH pArzva ucyate ॥37॥
Similarly the five letters beginning with ṬA and the five letters beginning with TA constitute His legs. The letter PA is His belly and the letter PHA is His right side.

बकारो वामपार्श्वस्तु भकारः स्कंध उच्यते ॥ मकारो हृदयं शंभोर्महादेवस्य योगिनः ॥३८॥
bakAro vAmapArzvastu bhakAraH skaMdha ucyate ॥ makAro hRdayaM zaMbhormahAdevasya yoginaH ॥38॥
The letter BA is His left side. The letter BHA is His shoulder. The letter MA is the heart of the great yogin Mahādeva.

यकारादिसकारान्ता विभोर्वै सप्तधातवः ॥ हकारो नाभिरूपो हि क्षकारो घ्राण उच्यते ॥३९॥
yakArAdisakArAntA vibhorvai saptadhAtavaH ॥ hakAro nAbhirUpo hi kSakAro ghrANa ucyate ॥39॥
The letters YA, RA, LA, VA, ŚA, ṢA and SA are the seven Dhātus (vital secretions) of the lord. The letter HA is His umbilicus and the letter KṢA is His nose.

एवं शब्दमयं रूपमगुणस्य गुणात्मनः॥ दृष्ट्वा तमुमया सार्द्धं कृतार्थोऽभून्मया हरिः ॥2-1-8-४०॥
evaM zabdamayaM rUpamaguNasya guNAtmanaH॥ dRSTvA tamumayA sArddhaM kRtArtho'bhUnmayA hariH ॥2-1-8-40॥

The “tattvamasi” mantra which is Hara’s Mahāvākya. Lord Viṣṇu performed Japa by means of these mantras.

The lord Viṣṇu and I being glad at heart eulogised the boon-bestowing lord Śiva with appropriate words,—Śiva who was seen in the form of Kalās, Varṇas (syllables), Ṛk, Yajus, Sāman, Īśāna, Īśa, Purātana Puruṣa (the ancient Being).

He whose heart is Aghora — gentle yet fearsome — the most delightful, The most secret of all, the eternal Śiva; Whose left foot is Mahādeva himself, Adorned with the great serpent king.

That Śiva, who possesses feet extending in all directions, Whose eyes and hands are everywhere, The Lord of Brahmā, and the cause of creation, preservation, and destruction.

With pleasing words of praise, the blessed Vishnu, together with me, Worshipped and glorified Sāmbha — the boon-giving Supreme Lord — with a satisfied heart.
