Brahmā said: When lord Nārāyaṇa continued to sleep, an excellent lotus of huge size came out of his navel as desired by Śiva.

It was many Yojanas wide and high. It had an endless stalk. The pericarp was of a brilliant hue.

koTisUryapratIkAzaM suMdara vacaxsaMyutam ॥ atyadbhutaM mahAramyaM darzanIyamanuttamam ॥ 3 ॥
It was very beautiful with the brilliance of ten million suns. It was wonderful, excellent and worthy of vision containing Tattvas.

kRtvA yatnaM pUrvavatsa zaMkaraH paramezvaraH ॥ dakSiNAMgAnnijAnmAM kaisAzIxzzaMbhurajIjanat ॥ 4 ॥
Exerting himself as before, Śiva, the great lord, with Pārvatī as his better half created me from His right limb.

O sage, having deluded me with His illusion immediately, Śiva in the course of His sport, produced me through the umbilical lotus of Viṣṇu.

eSa padmAttato jajJe putro'haM hemagarbhakaH ॥ caturmukho raktavarNastripuDrAMkitamastakaH ॥ 6 ॥
Thus it was that I came to be known as Lotus-born and conceived in a golden womb. I had four faces, red complexion and Tripuṇḍra-marked forehead.

tanmAyAmohitazcAhaM nAvidaM kamala vinA ॥ svadehajanakaM tAta pitaraM jJAnadurbalaH ॥ 7 ॥
Deluded by His illusion and weakened in knowledge, O dear one, I did not know who the progenitor of my body was, other than the lotus.

kohaM vA kuta AyAtaH kiM kArya tu madIyakam ॥ kasya putro'hamutpannaH kenaiva nirmito'dhunA ॥ 8 ॥
“Who am I? Whence did I come? What is my duty? To whom was I born a son? By whom have I been created?”

इति संशयमापन्नं बुद्धिर्मां समपद्यत ॥ किमर्थं मोहमायामि तज्ज्ञानं सुकरं खलु ॥ ९ ॥
iti saMzayamApannaM buddhirmAM samapadyata ॥ kimarthaM mohamAyAmi tajjJAnaM sukaraM khalu ॥ 9 ॥
Thus, my mind became filled with doubt. Why do I fall into delusion? That knowledge is indeed easily attainable.

एतत्कमलपुष्पस्य पत्रारोहस्थलं ह्यधः ॥ मत्कर्ता च स वै तत्र भविष्यति न संशयः ॥2-1-7-१०॥
etatkamalapuSpasya patrArohasthalaM hyadhaH ॥ matkartA ca sa vai tatra bhaviSyati na saMzayaH ॥2-1-7-10॥
This (place) is the lower surface of the petal of a lotus flower. The one who created me will certainly be there—there is no doubt about it.

इति बुद्धिं समास्थाय कमलादवरोहयन् ॥ नाले नालेगतस्तत्र वर्षाणां शतकं मुने ॥१ १॥
iti buddhiM samAsthAya kamalAdavarohayan ॥ nAle nAlegatastatra varSANAM zatakaM mune ॥1 1॥
Having firmly decided thus, he descended from the lotus. O sage! He moved through the hollow of its stalk for a hundred years.

न लब्धं तु मया तत्र कमलस्थानमुत्तमम् ॥ संशयं च पुनः प्राप्तः कमले गन्तुमुत्सुकः ॥ १२ ॥
na labdhaM tu mayA tatra kamalasthAnamuttamam ॥ saMzayaM ca punaH prAptaH kamale gantumutsukaH ॥ 12 ॥
The source of the lotus was not attained by me. In the doubt-tormented state I became eager to go up on to the top of the lotus.

ArurohAtha kamalaM nAlamArgeNa vai mune ॥ kuDmalaM kamalasyAtha labdhavAnna vimohitAH ॥13॥
O sage, I climbed up to the lotus by the stalk.But the upper part of the lotus I could not reach. I was disappointed.

nAlamArgeNa bhramato gataM varSazataM punaH ॥ kSaNamAtra tadA tatra tatastiSThanvimohitaH ॥14॥
Another hundred years elapsed in my wandering up the lotus. I stopped a while in that confounded state.

tadA vANI samutpannA tapeti paramA zubhA ॥ zivecchayA parA vyomno mohavidhvaMsinI mune ॥15॥
Then, O sage, by the will of Śiva, an auspicious voice “Perform Penance” was heard from the sky which dispelled my delusion.

tacchrutvA vyomavacanaM dvAdazAbdaM prayatnataH ॥ punastaptaM tapo ghoraM draSTuM svajanakaM tadA॥16॥
On hearing the voice of the sky I exerted myself for twelve years in performing a terrible penance in order to see my progenitor.

tadA hi bhagavAnviSNuzcaturbAhussulocanaH ॥ mayyevAnugrahaM kartuM drutamAvirbabhUva ha ॥17॥
At the same time, the four-armed lord Viṣṇu of beautiful eyes suddenly appeared before me in order to bless me.

शंखचक्रायुधकरो गदापद्मधरः परः ॥ घनश्यामलसर्वांगः पीताम्बरधरः परः ॥ १८ ॥
zaMkhacakrAyudhakaro gadApadmadharaH paraH ॥ ghanazyAmalasarvAMgaH pItAmbaradharaH paraH ॥ 18 ॥
The great lord was holding the conch, the discus, the mace and the lotus in his hands. He was wearing the yellow silken cloth and had cloud-blue complexion all over his body.

मुकुटादिमहाभूषः प्रसन्नमुखपंकजः ॥ कोटिकंदर्पसंकाशस्सन्दष्टो मोहितेन सः ॥ १९ ॥
mukuTAdimahAbhUSaH prasannamukhapaMkajaH ॥ koTikaMdarpasaMkAzassandaSTo mohitena saH ॥ 19 ॥
He had a crown. He was bedecked in great ornaments. His lotus-like face beamed with pleasure. Such was the lord resembling ten million Cupids that I saw still not out of delusion.

तद्दृष्ट्वा सुन्दरं रूपं विस्मयं परमं गतः ॥ कालाभं कांचनाभं च सर्वात्मानं चतुर्भुजम् ॥ 2-1-7-२० ॥
taddRSTvA sundaraM rUpaM vismayaM paramaM gataH ॥ kAlAbhaM kAMcanAbhaM ca sarvAtmAnaM caturbhujam ॥ 2-1-7-20 ॥
Seeing that beautiful form, I was filled with great wonder. It was dark like a raincloud, golden in radiance, the soul of all, and four-armed.

तथाभूतमहं दृष्ट्वा सदसन्मयमात्मना ॥ नारायणं महाबाहु हर्षितो ह्यभवं तदा ॥ २१ ॥
tathAbhUtamahaM dRSTvA sadasanmayamAtmanA ॥ nArAyaNaM mahAbAhu harSito hyabhavaM tadA ॥ 21 ॥
Seeing that form, which was the essence of both existence and non-existence, I beheld the mighty-armed Narayana, and I became overjoyed.

मायया मोहितश्शम्भोस्तदा लीलात्मनः प्रभोः ॥ अविज्ञाय स्वजनकं तमवोचं प्रहर्षितः ॥ २२ ॥
mAyayA mohitazzambhostadA lIlAtmanaH prabhoH ॥ avijJAya svajanakaM tamavocaM praharSitaH ॥ 22 ॥
Deluded by the illusion of Śiva, the sportive lord, I could not recognise my progenitor in him. I addressed him with delight.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ कस्त्वं वदेति हस्तेन समुत्थाप्य सनातनम् ॥ तदा हस्तप्रहारेण तीव्रेण सुदृढेन तु ॥ २३ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ kastvaM vadeti hastena samutthApya sanAtanam ॥ tadA hastaprahAreNa tIvreNa sudRDhena tu ॥ 23 ॥
Brahmā said: Who are you? Please tell me”, saying this I tried to wake the Eternal Being. ॥ When he did not wake up॥ I tried to wake him up with fiercer and firmer beatings of the hand.

प्रबुद्ध्योत्थाय शयनात्समासीनः क्षणं वशी ॥ ददर्श निद्राविक्लिन्ननीरजामललोचनः ॥२४॥
prabuddhyotthAya zayanAtsamAsInaH kSaNaM vazI ॥ dadarza nidrAviklinnanIrajAmalalocanaH ॥24॥
Then the lord who had self-control woke up from his bed and sat. He looked up with his pure eyes resembling a wet lotus, due to sleep.

मामत्र संस्थितं भासाध्यासितो भगवान्हरिः ॥ आह चोत्थाय ब्रह्माणं हसन्मां मधुरं सकृत् ॥ २५ ॥
mAmatra saMsthitaM bhAsAdhyAsito bhagavAnhariH ॥ Aha cotthAya brahmANaM hasanmAM madhuraM sakRt ॥ 25 ॥
As I stood there quietly, the lord Viṣṇu spread his brilliance over me. Standing up he smiled once and spoke these sweet words.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ स्वागतं स्वागतं वत्स पितामह महाद्युते ॥ निर्भयो भव दास्येऽहं सर्वान्कामान्न संशयः ॥ २६ ॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ svAgataM svAgataM vatsa pitAmaha mahAdyute ॥ nirbhayo bhava dAsye'haM sarvAnkAmAnna saMzayaH ॥ 26 ॥
Viṣṇu said:—“Welcome, welcome to you, dear child, O Pitāmaha of great brilliance. Do not be afraid. Undoubtedly I shall confer on you all that you desire.

tasya tadvacanaM zrutvA smitapUrvaM surarSabhaH ॥ rajasA baddhavairazca tamavocaM janArdanam ॥ 27 ॥
O foremost among gods, on hearing these words uttered with a smile I told Viṣṇu with my inimical attitude roused by the Rajoguṇa.

brahmovAca ॥ bhASase vatsa vatseti sarvasaMhArakAraNam ॥ mAmihAti smitaM kRtvA guruzziSyamivAnagha ॥ 28 ॥
Brahmā said: “O faultless one, how is it that you speak of me trivially as “Dear child”, me who am the cause of annihilation of everything, as a preceptor addresses his disciple?

कर्तारं जगतां साक्षात्प्रकृतेश्च प्रवर्तकम् ॥ सनातनमजं विष्णुं विरिंचिं विष्णुसंभवम् ॥ २९ ॥
kartAraM jagatAM sAkSAtprakRtezca pravartakam ॥ sanAtanamajaM viSNuM viriMciM viSNusaMbhavam ॥ 29 ॥
He (Vishnu) is the direct creator of the worlds and the activator of Prakriti (Nature). He is eternal, unborn (aja), and both Vishnu and Brahma originate from him.

विश्वात्मानं विधातारं धातारम्पंकजेक्षणम् ॥ किमर्थं भाषसे मोहाद्वक्तुमर्हसि सत्वरम् ॥ 2-1-7-३० ॥
vizvAtmAnaM vidhAtAraM dhAtArampaMkajekSaNam ॥ kimarthaM bhASase mohAdvaktumarhasi satvaram ॥ 2-1-7-30 ॥
Why do you, out of delusion, speak thus — about the Supreme Soul, the Creator, the Sustainer, the Lotus-eyed One? You ought to speak (or act) swiftly and appropriately.

वेदो मां वक्ति नियमात्स्वयंभुवमजं विभुम् ॥ पितामहं स्वराजं च परमेष्ठिनमुत्तमम् ॥ ३१ ॥
vedo mAM vakti niyamAtsvayaMbhuvamajaM vibhum ॥ pitAmahaM svarAjaM ca parameSThinamuttamam ॥ 31 ॥
The Vedas speak of me invariably as self-born, unborn, all-pervasive, grandfather, self-governed and the excellent supreme Being.

इत्याकर्ण्य हरिर्वाक्यं मम क्रुद्धो रमापतिः ॥ सोऽपि मामाह जाने त्वां कर्तारमिति लोकतः ॥ ३२ ॥
ityAkarNya harirvAkyaM mama kruddho ramApatiH ॥ so'pi mAmAha jAne tvAM kartAramiti lokataH ॥ 32 ॥
Hearing my words, Hari — the consort of Lakshmi — became angry. Then he too said to me: 'I know you as the creator (kartā) according to the world's view (or as is known in the world).

viSNuruvAca ॥ ॥ kartuM dharttuM bhavAnaMgAdavatIrNo mamAvyayAt ॥ vismRto'si jagannAthaM nArAyaNamanAmayam॥33॥
Vishnu said: To create and sustain (the universe), you were born from my imperishable body. But you have forgotten the Lord of the Universe — Narayana, the one who is free from all afflictions.

पुरुषं परमात्मानं पुरुहूतं पुरुष्टुतम् ॥ विष्णुमच्युतमीशानं विश्वस्य प्रभवोद्भवम्॥३४॥
puruSaM paramAtmAnaM puruhUtaM puruSTutam ॥ viSNumacyutamIzAnaM vizvasya prabhavodbhavam॥34॥
(He is) the Supreme Person, the Supreme Soul, invoked by many (Indra or praised like Indra), praised by noble men; Vishnu, the Infallible, the Lord, the source and origin of the entire universe.

नारायणं महाबाहुं सर्वव्याप कमीश्वरम् ॥ मन्नाभिपद्मतस्त्वं हि प्रसूतो नात्र संशयः ॥ ३५ ॥
nArAyaNaM mahAbAhuM sarvavyApa kamIzvaram ॥ mannAbhipadmatastvaM hi prasUto nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 35 ॥
Narayana — the mighty-armed, the all-pervading Supreme Lord — From the lotus growing from my navel, you were indeed born; of this, there is no doubt.

तवापराधो नास्त्यत्र त्वयि मायाकृतं मम ॥ शृणु सत्यं चतुर्वक्त्र सर्वदेवेश्वरो ह्यहम् ॥३६॥
tavAparAdho nAstyatra tvayi mAyAkRtaM mama ॥ zRNu satyaM caturvaktra sarvadevezvaro hyaham ॥36॥
Of course, it is not your fault. I have exercised my power of illusion over you. O four-faced one, listen to the truth. I am the lord of all Gods.

kartA hartA ca bhartA ca na mayAstisamo vibhuH ॥ ahameva paraM brahma paraM tattvaM pitAmaha॥37॥
I am the creator, sustainer and destroyer. There is no powerful person equal to me. O Pitāmaha, I am the supreme Brahman, the greatest Truth.

ahameva paraM jyotiH paramAtmA tvahaM vibhuH ॥ adya dRSTaM zrutaM sarvaM jagatyasmi~zcarAcaram ॥ 38 ॥
I am the greatest light. I am the great Ātman. I am the omnipresent. O four-faced one, whatever in seen or heard today in the whole universe, whether mobile or immobile is enveloped by me.

तत्तद्विद्धि चतुर्वक्त्र सर्वं मन्मयमित्यथ ॥ मया सृष्टं पुरा व्यक्तं चतुर्विंशतितत्त्वकम्॥ ३९ ॥
tattadviddhi caturvaktra sarvaM manmayamityatha ॥ mayA sRSTaM purA vyaktaM caturviMzatitattvakam॥ 39 ॥
Know this, O Four-Faced One (Brahmā), that all of this is pervaded by Me alone. Long ago, I created the manifested universe consisting of the twenty-four principles (tattvas).

नित्यं तेष्वणवो बद्धास्सृष्टक्रोधभयादयः ॥ प्रभावाच्च भवानंगान्यनेकानीह लीलया ॥ 2-1-7-४० ॥
nityaM teSvaNavo baddhAssRSTakrodhabhayAdayaH ॥ prabhAvAcca bhavAnaMgAnyanekAnIha lIlayA ॥ 2-1-7-40 ॥
I have created the atoms. I have created the qualities of anger, fear etc. Powerful and sportive I have created their parts and limbs.

sRSTA buddhirmayA tasyAmahaMkArastridhA tataH ॥ tanmAtraM paMkajaM tasmAnmanodehendriyANi ca ॥41॥
I have created the Intellect and the threefold Ego therein. I have evolved the five subtle elements, the mind, the body and the sense-organs.

I have created the elements Ether etc. and all created beings out of sheer sport. Realising this, O Brahmā, the lord of subjects, seek refuge in me.

ahaM tvAM sarvaduHkhebhyo rakSiSyAmi na saMzayaH ॥ brahmovAca ॥ iti zrutvA vacastasya brahmA krodhasamanvitaH ॥ ko vA tvamiti saMbhartsmAbruvaM mAyAvimohitaH ॥ 43 ॥।
“I shall certainly protect you from all miseries.” Brahmā said:— On hearing these words, I, proud of being Brahmā, became angry. Being deluded by illusion in a threatening attitude I asked him “who are you?”

kimarthaM bhASase bhUri vahvanarthakaraM vacaH ॥ nezvarastvaM parabrahma kazcitkartA bhavettava ॥44॥
Why do you talk so much? Your words will bring up disaster. You are neither the lord, nor the supreme Brahman. There must be a creator of yours.

Deluded by the illusion created by Śiva the great lord, I fought a terrific battle with Viṣṇu.

Inimical to each other due to Rajoguṇa, we fought a fierce battle in the middle of that vast expanse of the sea of Dissolution.

It had no beginning, middle or end. It had neither decrease nor increase. It was as furious as hundreds of the fire of death with thousands of leaping rows of flames.

It was unequalled, inexpressible unmanifest universal Being. The lord Viṣṇu became unconscious by its thousand flames.

When I too became senseless, Viṣṇu said to me. Oh, why do you contend with me now? A third person has now come. Let our quarrel cease.

From that time onwards, people call me Haṃsa-Haṃsa, a supreme Being॥ 2॥, Virāṭ, an illustrious Being. He who repeats ‘HaṃsaHaṃsa’, shall become a swan (a symbol of purity and discrimination.

Very white of complexion and endowed with wings on either side I flew up and up with the speed of the mind and wind.

Then Narayana, the Soul of the Universe, appeared as brilliantly white. His form was ten yojanas wide and a hundred yojanas in length.

He had a form as massive as Mount Meru, with fierce, sharp white fangs; His radiance was like the Sun at the end of time, With a long nose (or snout) and a thunderous voice.

His form was as massive as Mount Meru, with sharp and terrifying white fangs; He shone like the Sun at the time of cosmic dissolution (Kāla), With a long snout and a thunderous roar.

For a thousand years his downward course continued. From that time onwards Viṣṇu came to be called “Śvetavārāha” (white Boar) in all the worlds.

A Kalpa had elapsed according to human calculation when Viṣṇu thus went down and wandered in his eagerness to come out victorious.

The Boar did not find even the smallest trace of the root of the Liṅga. O, destroyer of enemies, I too spent the same time in going up.

From a desire to know its top as quickly as possible I exerted myself and was exhausted. Unable to see the top I came down after some time.

Similarly, lord Viṣṇu, the lotus-eyed, too became weary. Appearing like the lord of everything in his huge body he too rose up.

As soon as he came up, we bowed to Śiva again and again. He stood aside with a gloomy mind as he too was deluded by the illusion of Śiva.

We bowed down to Liṅga at His back, sides and in front. He mused within himself “What can this be?”

That form can’t be directly expressed. It is without action and name. Without any sex-distinction it has become a liṅga. It is beyond the path of meditation.

We do not know Thy true form, what Thou art Thou art, O great lord. Obeisance be to Thee, O Maheśāna. Please hurry up to reveal Thy form to us.
