Brahmā said: O Brahmin, foremost among the celestial beings, a good matter has been enquired into by you rendering service to the worlds and desiring their benefit.

I shall explain to you the wholesome and salutary principles of Śiva on hearing which the various sins of the people are destroyed.

Neither the principles of Śiva nor His supreme wonderful forms have been understood by me or by Viṣṇu or by any one else.

At the time of Great Dissolution when all the mobile and immobile objects of the world are dissolved everything gets enveloped in darkness, without the sun, planets and stars.

There is no moon. The day and the night are not demarcated. There is no fire, no wind, no earth and no water. There is no unmanifest primordial being. The whole firmament is one complete void, devoid of all Tejas elements.

adRSTatvAdirahitaM zabdasparzasamujjhitam ॥ avyaktagaMdharUpaM ca rasatyaktamadiGmukham ॥ 6 ॥
There is no Dharma or Adharma, no sound, no touch. Smell and colour are not manifest. There is no taste. The face of the quarters is not demarcated.

itthaM satyaMdhatamase sUcIbhedyaM niraMtare ॥ tatsadbrahmeti yacchrutvA sadekaM pratipadyate ॥ 7 ॥
hus when there is pitch darkness that cannot be pierced with a needle and what is mentioned in the Vedas as “The Existent and the Brahman” is alone present.

itIdRzaM yadA nAsIdyattatsadasadAtmakam ॥ yoginoMtarhitAkAze yatpazyaMti niraMtaram ॥8॥
When the present visible world is not in existence, the Sat Brahman alone is present which Yogins observe perpetually in the inner Soul, the inner Firmament.

अमनोगोचरम्वाचां विषयन्न कदाचन ॥ अनामरूपवर्णं च न च स्थूलं न यत्कृशम्॥९॥
amanogocaramvAcAM viSayanna kadAcana ॥ anAmarUpavarNaM ca na ca sthUlaM na yatkRzam॥9॥
It is incomprehensible to the mind. It cannot at all be expressed by words. It has neither name nor colour. It is neither thick nor thin.

ahrasvadIrghamalaghugurutvaparivarjitam ॥ na yatropacayaH kazcittathA nApacayo'pi ca ॥ 2-1-6-10॥
It is neither short nor long. It is neither light nor heavy. There is neither increase nor decrease in it.

abhidhatte sa cakitaM yadastIti zrutiH punaH ॥ satyaM jJAnamanaMtaM ca parAnaMdamparammahaH ॥ 1 1॥
The Veda says that it envelops whatever is in a surprising way. It is the splendour, the truth, the knowledge, the eternal and the great Bliss.

aprameyamanAdhAramavikAramanAkRti ॥ nirguNaM yogigamyaJca sarvavyApyekakArakam ॥12॥
It is immeasurable, propless, changeless, formless, attributeless, perceptible to the Yogins, all-pervasive and the sole cause of the universe.

nirvikalpaM nirAraMbhaM nirmAyaM nirupadravam ॥ advitIyamanAdyantamavikAzaM cidAtmakam ॥13॥
It is free from alternatives. It has no beginning. It is free from illusion and its harassment. It has no second. It has neither beginning nor end. It has no development. It is in the form of pure knowledge.

yasyetthaM saMvikalpaMte saMjJAsaMjJoktitaH sma vai ॥ kiyatA caiva kAlena dvitIyecchA'bhavatkila ॥ 14 ॥
People have doubts about giving it a name. That Being, then after sometime, it is said, wished for a second.

amUrtena svamUrtizca tenAkalpi svalIlayA ॥ sarvaizvaryaguNopetA sarvajJAnamayI zubhA ॥ 15 ॥
The Being, having no form of its own, wished to create, in the course of its own sport, an auspicious form of its own endowed with all power, qualities and knowledge.

सर्वगा सर्वरूपा च सर्वदृक्सर्वकारिणी ॥ सर्वेकवंद्या सर्वाद्या सर्वदा सर्वसंस्कृतिः ॥ १६ ॥
sarvagA sarvarUpA ca sarvadRksarvakAriNI ॥ sarvekavaMdyA sarvAdyA sarvadA sarvasaMskRtiH ॥ 16 ॥
A form that goes everywhere, that has all forms, that sees all, that is the cause of all, that should be respected by all, that is at the beginning of all, that bestows everything, and that sanctifies everything should be created (So it wished) and hence created that form of Īśvara of pure nature.

परिकल्येति तां मूर्तिमैश्वरीं शुद्धरूपिणीम् ॥ अद्वितीयमनाद्यंतं सर्वाभासं चिदात्मकम् ॥ अंतर्दधे पराख्यं यद्ब्रह्म सर्वगमव्ययम् ॥ १७ ॥
parikalyeti tAM mUrtimaizvarIM zuddharUpiNIm ॥ advitIyamanAdyaMtaM sarvAbhAsaM cidAtmakam ॥ aMtardadhe parAkhyaM yadbrahma sarvagamavyayam ॥ 17 ॥
Thus, he worshipped that form of the Divine Mother, the Supreme Goddess, who is pure and of the highest nature, without beginning or end, the singular essence, the embodiment of all consciousness, whose essence is the supreme Brahman, eternal, all-pervading, and imperishable.

अमूर्ते यत्पराख्यं वै तस्य मूर्तिस्सदाशिवः ॥ अर्वाचीनाः पराचीना ईश्वरं तं जगुर्बुधाः ॥ ॥ १८ ॥
amUrte yatparAkhyaM vai tasya mUrtissadAzivaH ॥ arvAcInAH parAcInA IzvaraM taM jagurbudhAH ॥ ॥ 18 ॥
The original Being without a second, with neither beginning nor end, that illuminates everything, that is in the form of Cit (pure knowledge), that which is termed Supreme Brahman, the all-pervasive and undecaying, vanished, The manifest form of the formless Being is Sadāśiva. Scholars of the ancient and succeeding ages have sung of it as Īśvara.

शक्तिस्तदैकलेनापि स्वैरं विहरता तनुः ॥ स्वविग्रहात्स्वयं सृष्टा स्वशरीरानपायिनी ॥ १९ ॥
zaktistadaikalenApi svairaM viharatA tanuH ॥ svavigrahAtsvayaM sRSTA svazarIrAnapAyinI ॥ 19 ॥
Īśvara though alone, then created the physical form Śakti from his body. This Śakti did not affect his body in any way.

प्रधानं प्रकृति तां च मायां गुणवतीं पराम् ॥ बुद्धितत्त्वस्य जननीमाहुर्विकृतिवर्जिताम् ॥ 2-1-6-२० ॥
pradhAnaM prakRti tAM ca mAyAM guNavatIM parAm ॥ buddhitattvasya jananImAhurvikRtivarjitAm ॥ 2-1-6-20 ॥
This Śakti is called by various names. Pradhāna, Prakṛti, Māyā, Guṇavatī, Parā. The mother of Buddhi Tattva (The cosmic Intelligence), Vikṛtivarjitā (without modification).

सा शक्तिरम्बिका प्रोक्ता प्रकृतिस्सकलेश्वरी॥ त्रिदेवजननी नित्या मूलकारणमित्युत ॥ २१ ॥
sA zaktirambikA proktA prakRtissakalezvarI॥ tridevajananI nityA mUlakAraNamityuta ॥ 21 ॥
That Śakti is Ambikā, Prakṛti and the goddess of all. She is the prime cause and the mother of the three deities.

अस्या अष्टौ भुजाश्चासन्विचित्रवदना शुभा ॥ राकाचन्द्रसहस्रस्य वदने भाश्च नित्यशः ॥२२॥
asyA aSTau bhujAzcAsanvicitravadanA zubhA ॥ rAkAcandrasahasrasya vadane bhAzca nityazaH ॥22॥
She has eight arms. Her face wears a peculiar splendour, the splendour of a thousand moons. Thousands of stars perpetually sparkle round her face.

नानाभरणसंयुक्ता नानागतिसमन्विता ॥ नानायुधधरा देवी फुल्लपंकजलोचना ॥ २३ ॥
nAnAbharaNasaMyuktA nAnAgatisamanvitA ॥ nAnAyudhadharA devI phullapaMkajalocanA ॥ 23 ॥
She is bedecked in various ornaments. She has various weapons. She is capable of various movements. Her eyes beam like a full blown lotus.

अचिंत्यतेजसा युक्ता सर्वयोनिस्समुद्यता ॥ एकाकिनी यदा माया संयोगाच्चाप्यनेकिका ॥ २४ ॥
aciMtyatejasA yuktA sarvayonissamudyatA ॥ ekAkinI yadA mAyA saMyogAccApyanekikA ॥ 24 ॥
She has a brilliance which could hardly be conceived. She is the generating cause of all. She sprang up singly as Māyā. In her union she manifested in various forms.

परः पुमानीश्वरस्स शिवश्शंभुरनीश्वरः ॥ शीर्षे मन्दाकिनीधारी भालचन्द्रस्त्रिलोचनः ॥२५॥
paraH pumAnIzvarassa zivazzaMbhuranIzvaraH ॥ zIrSe mandAkinIdhArI bhAlacandrastrilocanaH ॥25॥
The supreme Puruṣa is Śiva. He is called Śambhu. He has no other lord over Him. He holds the Mandākinī (Gaṅgā) on His head, and the crescent moon on His forehead. He has three eyes.

पंचवक्त्रः प्रसन्नात्मा दशबाहुस्त्रिशूलधृक् ॥ कर्पूरगौरसुसितो भस्मोद्धूलितविग्रहः ॥२६॥
paMcavaktraH prasannAtmA dazabAhustrizUladhRk ॥ karpUragaurasusito bhasmoddhUlitavigrahaH ॥26॥
He has five faces. He is always joyful. He has ten arms. He holds the trident. He is as pure and white as camphor. His body is entirely dusted with the ash.

युगपच्च तया शक्त्या साकं कालस्वरूपिणा ॥ शिवलोकाभिधं क्षेत्रं निर्मितं तेन ब्रह्मणा॥ २७ ॥
yugapacca tayA zaktyA sAkaM kAlasvarUpiNA ॥ zivalokAbhidhaM kSetraM nirmitaM tena brahmaNA॥ 27 ॥
That Brahman of the form of Kāla (Time) together with Śakti, simultaneouly created the holy centre called Śivaloka.

तदेव काशिकेत्येतत्प्रोच्यते क्षेत्रमुत्तमम् ॥ परं निर्वाणसंख्यानं सर्वोपरि विराजितम् ॥ २८ ॥
tadeva kAziketyetatprocyate kSetramuttamam ॥ paraM nirvANasaMkhyAnaM sarvopari virAjitam ॥ 28 ॥
The same is called Kāśikā, the excellent holy centre. It is the seat of salvation shining over and above everything.

ताभ्यां च रममाणाभ्यां च तस्मिन्क्षेत्रे मनोरमे ॥ परमानंदरूपाभ्यां परमानन्दरूपिणी ॥२९॥
tAbhyAM ca ramamANAbhyAM ca tasminkSetre manorame ॥ paramAnaMdarUpAbhyAM paramAnandarUpiNI ॥29॥
The holy centre is of the nature of extreme Bliss inasmuch as the primordial lovers, supremely Blissful, made that beautiful holy centre their perpetual abode.

मुने प्रलयकालेपि न तत्क्षेत्रं कदाचन ॥ विमुक्तं हि शिवाभ्यां यदविमुक्तं ततो विदुः॥2-1-6-३०॥
mune pralayakAlepi na tatkSetraM kadAcana ॥ vimuktaM hi zivAbhyAM yadavimuktaM tato viduH॥2-1-6-30॥
O sage, that holy centre is never, even at the time of Great Dissolution, free from Śiva and Śivā (Śakti). Hence it is called Avimukta.

अस्यानन्दवनं नाम पुराकारि पिनाकिना ॥ क्षेत्रस्यानंदहेतुत्वादविमुक्तमनंतरम्॥३१॥
asyAnandavanaM nAma purAkAri pinAkinA ॥ kSetrasyAnaMdahetutvAdavimuktamanaMtaram॥31॥
Since the holy centre is the cause of Bliss, the Pināka-bearing lord (Śiva) called it “the blissful forest” and later “Avimukta”.

अथानन्दवने तस्मिञ्च्छिवयो रममाणयोः॥ इच्छेत्यभूत्सुरर्षे हि सृज्यः कोप्यपरः किल ॥ ३२ ॥
athAnandavane tasmiJcchivayo ramamANayoH॥ icchetyabhUtsurarSe hi sRjyaH kopyaparaH kila ॥ 32 ॥
O celestial sage, the blissful, two deities thus sporting in the forest wished, it is said, for another Being to be created.

यस्मिन्यस्य महाभारमावां स्वस्वैरचारिणौ ॥ निर्वाणधारणं कुर्वः केवलं काशिशायिनौ ॥३३॥
yasminyasya mahAbhAramAvAM svasvairacAriNau ॥ nirvANadhAraNaM kurvaH kevalaM kAzizAyinau ॥33॥
Śiva thought within Himself like this—“Another being shall be created by me. Let him create everything, protect it and in the end let him dissolve it with my blessing. Having entrusted everything to him we two, remaining in Kāśī shall roam as we please keeping only the prerogative of conferring salvation.

स एव सर्वं कुरुतां स एव परिपातु च ॥ स एव संवृणोत्वं ते मदनुग्रहतस्सदा ॥३४॥
sa eva sarvaM kurutAM sa eva paripAtu ca ॥ sa eva saMvRNotvaM te madanugrahatassadA ॥34॥
He alone is the one who performs all actions, He alone is the one who protects all; He alone, by His eternal grace, encompasses all your beings.

चेतस्समुद्रमाकुंच्य चिंताकल्लोललोलितम् ॥ सत्त्वरत्नं तमोग्राहं रजोविद्रुमवल्लितम् ॥३५॥
cetassamudramAkuMcya ciMtAkallolalolitam ॥ sattvaratnaM tamogrAhaM rajovidrumavallitam ॥35॥
Concentrating the mind like the ocean, It agitates with waves of thoughts. The mind, filled with the jewel of goodness, And surrounded by the grasp of darkness and the redness of passion.

यस्य प्रसादात्तिष्ठावस्सुखमानंदकानने॥ परिक्षिप्तमनोवृत्तौ बहिश्चिंतातुरे सुखम् ॥३६॥
yasya prasAdAttiSThAvassukhamAnaMdakAnane॥ parikSiptamanovRttau bahizciMtAture sukham ॥36॥
By the grace of the Lord, one remains in happiness and the abode of bliss. With the mind being diverted from worldly worries, one attains peace and comfort.

संप्रधार्य्येति स विभुस्तया शक्त्या परेश्वरः ॥ सव्ये व्यापारयांचक्रे दशमेंऽगेसुधासवम् ॥ ३७ ॥
saMpradhAryyeti sa vibhustayA zaktyA parezvaraH ॥ savye vyApArayAMcakre dazameM'gesudhAsavam ॥ 37 ॥
Thus, the supreme Lord, with His powerful energy, Engaged in the work of distributing the nectar of immortality, He moved the wheel of time in the right direction, using His divine power.

ततः पुमानाविरासीदेकस्त्रैलोक्यसुंदरः ॥ शांतस्सत्त्वगुणोद्रिक्तो गांभीर्य्यामितसागरः ॥३८॥
tataH pumAnAvirAsIdekastrailokyasuMdaraH ॥ zAMtassattvaguNodrikto gAMbhIryyAmitasAgaraH ॥38॥
Then, there appeared a person, the most beautiful of all three worlds, With a calm nature, endowed with the quality of purity, He was profound like an infinite ocean of depth.

तथा च क्षमया युक्तो मुनेऽलब्धोपमो ऽभवत् ॥ इन्द्रनीलद्युतिः श्रीमान्पुण्डरीकोत्तमेक्षणः ॥३९ ॥
tathA ca kSamayA yukto mune'labdhopamo 'bhavat ॥ indranIladyutiH zrImAnpuNDarIkottamekSaNaH ॥39 ॥
O sage, he was endowed with patience. There was no one comparable to him. He had the lustre of sapphire. He was glorious with his excellent eyes shining like a lotus.

सुवर्णकृतिभृच्छ्रेष्ठ दुकूलयुगलावृतः ॥ लसत्प्रचंडदोर्दण्डयुगलोह्यपराजितः ॥2-1-6-४०॥

He was having a golden form and features. He wore two excellent silk garments of golden colour. His were browny and brilliant. He was indefatigable.

On hearing it Lord Śiva laughed. With words thunderlike in resonance, Lord Śiva addressed the person thus.

Śiva said: “You will be famous as Viṣṇu by name as you are all-pervasive. You will have many other names conferring happiness on devotees.

Perform penance highly conducive to the achivement of the matter in hand, Be firm in it.” Saying so, the lord bestowed on him the Vedas through his nostrils.

Śiva vanished accompanied by Śakti and his attendants. After due obeisance to Śiva, Viṣṇu began his great penance.

divyaM dvAdaza sAhasraM varSaM taptvApi cAcyutaH ॥ na prApa svAbhilaSitaM sarvadaM zaMbhudarzanam ॥ 46 ॥
Even after performing the penance for twelve thousand divine years, Viṣṇu could not achieve his desire, the vision of Śiva that confers everything.

He became suspicious and respectfully meditating on Śiva pondered “What shall I do now?”

That Being Viṣṇu became enlightened, following the path of meditation. He was delightfully surprised. “O what is that True entity?”

From the body of Viṣṇu who thus exerted himself, water-currents of various sorts began to flow as a result of Śiva’s Māyā.

O great sage, the Supreme Brahman in the form of divine waters pervaded the entire void. A mere contact with the same is destructive of sins.

Viṣṇu, the weary person went to sleep amidst the waters. He was in that blissful state of delusion for a long time.

As approved in the Vedas, his name came to be established as Nārāyaṇa (Having water as abode). Excepting for that Primordial Being there was nothing then.

prakRtezca mahAnAsInmahatazca guNAstrayaH ॥ ahaMkArastato jAtastrividho guNabhedataH ॥ 56 ॥
From Prakṛti came into being the Mahat (cosmic Intellect), from Mahat the three Guṇas. Ahaṃkāra (the cosmic ego) arose therefrom in three forms according to the three Guṇas.

The Essences, the five elements, the senses of knowledge and action too came into being then.

tattvAnAmiti saMkhyAnamuktaM te RSisattama ॥ jaDAtmakaJca tatsarvaM prakRteH puruSaM vinA ॥58॥
O most excellent of sages, I have thus enumerated the principles. All these principles originating from Prakṛti are insentient. but not the Puruṣa. These principles are twenty-four in number.

tattadaikIkRtaM tattvaM caturviMzatisaMkhyakam॥ zivecchayA gRhItvA sa suSvApa brahmarUpake ॥59॥
Viṣṇu, the Puruṣa, accepted all these, as was the will of Śiva, and began his sleep in the Brahman.
