sUta uvAca ॥ aMtarhite harau viprA nArado munisattamaH ॥ vicacAra mahIM pazyaJchivaliMgAni bhaktitaH ॥ 1 ॥
Sūta said: O brahmins, when Viṣṇu vanished, the excellent sage Nārada roamed over the Earth seeing Śiva Liṅgas (in the various holy centres) with piety.

pRthivyA aTanaM kRtvA zivarUpANyanekazaH ॥ dadarza prItito viprA bhuktimuktipradAni saH ॥ 2 ॥
In the course of his wanderings over the Earth, O brahmins, with his mind full of devotional pleasure he saw many forms of Śiva that confer worldly pleasures and salvation on the devotees.

atha taM vicaraMtaM kau nAradaM divyadarzanam ॥ jJAtvA zaMbhugaNau tau tu sucittamupajagmatuH ॥ 3 ॥
On knowing that Nārada of divine vision was wandering over the Earth, the two attendants of Śiva approached him who by that time had become pure in mind.

शिरसा सुप्रणम्याशु गणावूचतुरादरात् ॥ गृहीत्वा चरणौ तस्य शापोद्धारेच्छया च तौ ॥ ४ ॥
zirasA supraNamyAzu gaNAvUcaturAdarAt ॥ gRhItvA caraNau tasya zApoddhArecchayA ca tau ॥ 4 ॥
They bowed to him and touched his feet. With a desire to secure release from the curse they spoke to him respectfully.

zivagaNAvUcatuH ॥ brahmaputra surarSe hi zRNu prItyA vayorvacaH ॥ tavAparAdhakartArAvAvAM viprau na vastutaH ॥ 5 ॥
The attendants of Śiva said: O celestial sage, son of Brahmā, please hear our words. We who formerly offended you are really not brahmins.

आवां हरगणौ विप्र तवागस्कारिणौ मुने ॥ स्वयम्बरे राजपुत्र्या मायामोहितचेतसा ॥ ६ ॥
AvAM haragaNau vipra tavAgaskAriNau mune ॥ svayambare rAjaputryA mAyAmohitacetasA ॥ 6 ॥
O brahminical sage, we, your former offenders, are the attendants of Śiva. Induced by Śiva you had cursed us when your mind was deluded by the illusory infatuation for the princess at the Svayaṃvara.

त्वया दत्तश्च नौ शापः परेशप्रेरितेन ह ॥ ज्ञात्वा कुसमयं तत्र मौनमेव हि जीवनम् ॥ ७ ॥
tvayA dattazca nau zApaH parezapreritena ha ॥ jJAtvA kusamayaM tatra maunameva hi jIvanam ॥ 7 ॥
You have given us a curse, but it was caused by the divine will of another. Knowing that the misfortune is a result of such divine will, silence alone is the way of life.

स्वकर्मणः फलं प्राप्तं कस्यापि न हि दूषणम् ॥ सुप्रसन्नो भव विभो कुर्वनुग्रहमद्य नौ ॥ ८ ॥
svakarmaNaH phalaM prAptaM kasyApi na hi dUSaNam ॥ suprasanno bhava vibho kurvanugrahamadya nau ॥ 8 ॥
We reaped the fruit of our own action. No one is to be blamed for it. O lord, be pleased. Bless us now.

सूत उवाच ॥ वच आकर्ण्य गणयोरिति भक्त्युक्तमादरात् ॥ प्रत्युवाच मुनिः प्रीत्या पश्चात्तापमवाप्य सः ॥ ९ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ vaca AkarNya gaNayoriti bhaktyuktamAdarAt ॥ pratyuvAca muniH prItyA pazcAttApamavApya saH ॥ 9 ॥
Sūta said: On hearing the words of the attendants uttered with devotion and respect, the sage replied lovingly, repenting (for his previous fury).

नारद उवाच ॥ शृणुतं मे महादेव गणा मान्यतमौ सताम् ॥ वचनं सुखदं मोहनिर्मुक्तं च यथार्थकम्॥! 2-1-5-१०॥
nArada uvAca ॥ zRNutaM me mahAdeva gaNA mAnyatamau satAm ॥ vacanaM sukhadaM mohanirmuktaM ca yathArthakam॥! 2-1-5-10॥
Nārada said: O attendants of Lord Śiva, most worthy of the respect of good people, please listen to my words now free from delusion. They are true and shall make you happy.

पुरा मम मतिर्भ्रष्टासीच्छिवेच्छावशात् युवम् ॥ सर्वथा मोहमापन्नश्शप्तवान्वां कुशेमुषिः ॥ ११ ॥
purA mama matirbhraSTAsIcchivecchAvazAt yuvam ॥ sarvathA mohamApannazzaptavAnvAM kuzemuSiH ॥ 11 ॥
Formerly my mind had been depraved. Certainly it was Śiva’s will. In that state of delusion and crookedness of the mind I had unfortunately cursed both of you.

यदुक्तं तत्तथा भावि तथापि शृणुतां गणौ ॥ शापोद्धारमहं वच्मि क्षमथा मघमद्य मे ॥ १२ ॥
yaduktaM tattathA bhAvi tathApi zRNutAM gaNau ॥ zApoddhAramahaM vacmi kSamathA maghamadya me ॥ 12 ॥
What I have said is bound to happen. Still, O Gaṇas (attendants) listen. I shall tell you the way of redemption from the curse. Please forgive my sin now.

वीर्यान्मुनिवरस्याप्त्वा राक्षसेशत्वमादिशम् ॥ स्यातां विभवसंयुक्तौ बलिनो सुप्रतापिनौ ॥ १३ ॥
vIryAnmunivarasyAptvA rAkSasezatvamAdizam ॥ syAtAM vibhavasaMyuktau balino supratApinau ॥ 13 ॥
By the power attained from the great sage, they will assume the form of powerful demons, endowed with immense wealth and strength, and will be formidable in their prowess.

सर्वब्रह्मांडराजानौ शिवभक्तौ जितेन्द्रियौ ॥ शिवापरतनोर्मृत्युं प्राप्य स्वं पदमाप्स्यथः ॥ १४ ॥
sarvabrahmAMDarAjAnau zivabhaktau jitendriyau ॥ zivAparatanormRtyuM prApya svaM padamApsyathaH ॥ 14 ॥
By becoming devotees of Lord Shiva, and by conquering their senses, the rulers of the entire universe will attain liberation and reach their eternal abode after overcoming death.

सूत उवाच ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य मुनेर्वाक्यं नारदस्य महात्मनः ॥ उभौ हरगणौ प्रीतौ स्वं पदं जग्मतुर्मुदा ॥ १५ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ ityAkarNya munervAkyaM nAradasya mahAtmanaH ॥ ubhau haragaNau prItau svaM padaM jagmaturmudA ॥ 15 ॥
Sūta said: On hearing these words of the noble-souled Nārada, the two attendants of Śiva became delighted and went back to their abode joyfully.

नारदोऽपि परं प्रीतो ध्यायञ्छिवमनन्यधीः ॥ विचचार महीं पश्यञ्छिवतीर्थान्यभीक्ष्णशः ॥ १६ ॥
nArado'pi paraM prIto dhyAyaJchivamananyadhIH ॥ vicacAra mahIM pazyaJchivatIrthAnyabhIkSNazaH ॥ 16 ॥
Nārada too was delighted. Meditating exclusively on Śiva he continued his wanderings over the Earth seeing the various holy centres of Śiva personally.

काशीं प्राप्याथ स मुनिः सर्वोपरि विराजिताम् ॥ शिवप्रियां शंभुसुखप्रदां शम्भुस्वरूपिणीम् ॥ १७ ॥
kAzIM prApyAtha sa muniH sarvopari virAjitAm ॥ zivapriyAM zaMbhusukhapradAM zambhusvarUpiNIm ॥ 17 ॥
Reaching Kāśī that excelled all other cities in holiness, which is a favourite resort of Śiva, which easily bestows the favour of Śiva and which is identical with Śiva, the sage became contented.

दृष्ट्वा काशीं कृताऽर्थोभूत्काशीनाथं ददर्श ह ॥ आनर्च परम प्रीत्या परमानन्दसंयुतः ॥ १८ ॥
dRSTvA kAzIM kRtA'rthobhUtkAzInAthaM dadarza ha ॥ Anarca parama prItyA paramAnandasaMyutaH ॥ 18 ॥
After witnessing Kashi (Varanasi), having fulfilled his desires, he saw the Lord of Kashi (Lord Shiva) with great devotion, filled with supreme bliss.

स मुदः सेव्यतां काशीं कृतार्थो मुनिसत्तमः ॥ नमन्संवर्णयन्भक्त्या संस्मरन्प्रेमविह्वलः ॥ ॥१९॥
sa mudaH sevyatAM kAzIM kRtArtho munisattamaH ॥ namansaMvarNayanbhaktyA saMsmaranpremavihvalaH ॥ ॥19॥
While staying at Kāśī, the excellent sage became contented; he bowed to the lord, described his glory piously, and remembered him with the flutter of love.

ब्रह्मलोकं जगामाथ शिवस्मरणसन्मतिः ॥ शिवतत्त्वं विशेषेण ज्ञातुमिच्छुस्स नारदः ॥ 2-1-5-२० ॥
brahmalokaM jagAmAtha zivasmaraNasanmatiH ॥ zivatattvaM vizeSeNa jJAtumicchussa nAradaH ॥ 2-1-5-20 ॥
Nārada then went to the region of Brahmā, his mind being highly purified by remembering Śiva. He was eager to know further the principles of Śiva.

नत्वा तत्र विधिं भक्त्या स्तुत्वा च विविधैस्तवैः ॥ पप्रच्छ शिवत्तत्वं शिवसंभक्तमानसः ॥२१॥
natvA tatra vidhiM bhaktyA stutvA ca vividhaistavaiH ॥ papraccha zivattatvaM zivasaMbhaktamAnasaH ॥21॥
There he bowed to Brahmā with devotion and eulogised him with various prayers. With his mind riveted to Śiva he asked him the good principles of Śiva.

नारद उवाच ॥ ब्रह्मन्ब्रह्मस्वरूपज्ञ पितामह जगत्प्रभो ॥ त्वत्प्रसादान्मया सर्वं विष्णोर्माहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ॥ २२ ॥
nArada uvAca ॥ brahmanbrahmasvarUpajJa pitAmaha jagatprabho ॥ tvatprasAdAnmayA sarvaM viSNormAhAtmyamuttamam ॥ 22 ॥
Nārada said: O Brahman, the embodiment of Brahman, the grandfather, and the Lord of the universe, By your grace, I have understood the supreme glory of Vishnu.

भक्तिमार्गं ज्ञानमार्गं तपोमार्गं सुदुस्तरम् ॥ दानमार्गञ्च तीर्थानां मार्गं च श्रुतवानहम् ॥ २३ ॥
bhaktimArgaM jJAnamArgaM tapomArgaM sudustaram ॥ dAnamArgaJca tIrthAnAM mArgaM ca zrutavAnaham ॥ 23 ॥
I have heard about the path of devotion, the path of knowledge, the path of penance, the path of charity, and the path of pilgrimage, all of which are extremely difficult.

न ज्ञातं शिवतत्त्वं च पूजाविधिमतः क्रमात् ॥ चरित्रं विविधं तस्य निवेदय मम प्रभो ॥ २४ ॥
na jJAtaM zivatattvaM ca pUjAvidhimataH kramAt ॥ caritraM vividhaM tasya nivedaya mama prabho ॥ 24 ॥
But I have not understood the principle of Śiva. Hence, O lord, please explain the rules of His worship and also the various activities of the lord.

निर्गुणोऽपि शिवस्तात सगुणश्शंकरः कथम् ॥ शिवतत्त्वं न जानामि मोहितश्शिवमायया ॥२५॥
nirguNo'pi zivastAta saguNazzaMkaraH katham ॥ zivatattvaM na jAnAmi mohitazzivamAyayA ॥25॥
O dear sage, how can Śiva who is free form ॥ from?॥ attributes become full of attributes? Since I am deluded by Śiva’s Māyā, I do not know the principle of Śiva.

sRSTeH pUrvaM kathaM zaMbhussvarUpeNa pratiSThitaH ॥ sRSTimadhye sa hi kathaM krIDansaMvartate prabhuH ॥ 26 ॥
How did Śiva remain in His pure form before Creation? In the middle of creation how does He sport about?

tadante ca kathaM devassa tiSThati mahezvaraH ॥ kathaM prasannatAM yAti zaMkaro lokazaMkaraH ॥ 27 ॥
At the time of dissolution how does He remain? How is He, the benefactor of the world, propitiated?

संतुष्टश्च स्वभक्तेभ्यः परेभ्यश्च महेश्वरः ॥ किं फलं यच्छति विधे तत्सर्वं कथयस्व मे ॥ २८ ॥
saMtuSTazca svabhaktebhyaH parebhyazca mahezvaraH ॥ kiM phalaM yacchati vidhe tatsarvaM kathayasva me ॥ 28 ॥
O Brahmā, when propitiated what benefit does He bestow on His devotees and on others? Please satisfy me on all these enquiries.

सद्यः प्रसन्नो भगवान्भवतीत्यनुसंश्रुतम् ॥ भक्तप्रयासं स महान्न पश्यति दयापरः ॥ २९ ॥
sadyaH prasanno bhagavAnbhavatItyanusaMzrutam ॥ bhaktaprayAsaM sa mahAnna pazyati dayAparaH ॥ 29 ॥
I have heard that the lord becomes delighted immediately. The merciful Great God cannot bear the stress and strain of His devotees.

ब्रह्मा विष्णुर्महेशश्च त्रयो देवाश्शिवांशजाः ॥ महेशस्तत्र पूर्णांशस्स्वयमेव शिवः परः ॥ 2-1-5-३० ॥
brahmA viSNurmahezazca trayo devAzzivAMzajAH ॥ mahezastatra pUrNAMzassvayameva zivaH paraH ॥ 2-1-5-30 ॥
The three deities Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśa are born as parts of Śiva. Maheśa, having all the parts of Śiva, is Śiva Himself.

तस्याविर्भावमाख्याहि चरितानि विशेषतः ॥ उमाविर्भावमाख्याहि तद्विवाहं तथा विभो ॥३१॥
tasyAvirbhAvamAkhyAhi caritAni vizeSataH ॥ umAvirbhAvamAkhyAhi tadvivAhaM tathA vibho ॥31॥
Please tell me all about His manifestation and especially His exploits. O lord, please narrate the manifestation of Umā and her marriage.

तद्गार्हस्थ्यं विशेषेण तथा लीलाः परा अपि॥ एतत्सर्वं तथान्यच्च कथनीयं त्वयानघ ॥३२॥
tadgArhasthyaM vizeSeNa tathA lIlAH parA api॥ etatsarvaM tathAnyacca kathanIyaM tvayAnagha ॥32॥
Their domestic life, especially their great divine sports and other things which are worthy of mention should be narrated to me, O sinless one.

तदुत्पत्तिं विवाहं च शिवायास्तु विशेषतः॥ प्रब्रूहि मे प्रजानाथ गुहजन्म तथैव च॥३३॥
tadutpattiM vivAhaM ca zivAyAstu vizeSataH॥ prabrUhi me prajAnAtha guhajanma tathaiva ca॥33॥
Pārvatī’s birth and her marriage as well as Guha’s birth shall be narrated in detail, O lord of people.

बहुभ्यश्च श्रुतं पूर्वं न तृप्तोऽस्मि जगत्प्रभो॥ अतस्त्वां शरणं प्राप्तः कृपां कुरु ममोपरि ॥३४॥
bahubhyazca zrutaM pUrvaM na tRpto'smi jagatprabho॥ atastvAM zaraNaM prAptaH kRpAM kuru mamopari ॥34॥
O lord of universe, this I have heard from many, before, but I am not satisfied. Hence I have sought refuge in you. Please have mercy on me.

इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य नारदस्यांगजस्य हि॥ उवाच वचनं तत्र ब्रह्मा लोकपितामहः॥३५॥
iti zrutvA vacastasya nAradasyAMgajasya hi॥ uvAca vacanaM tatra brahmA lokapitAmahaH॥35॥
On hearing these words of Nārada his own son, Brahmā, the grandfather of the world, said this.
