RSaya UcuH ॥ sUtasUta mahAbhAga vyAsaziSya namo'stu te ॥ adbhuteyaM kathA tAta varNitA kRpayA hi naH ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said: "O Soot, O greatly blessed one, salutations to you, the disciple of Vyasa. The story that you have narrated is marvelous, and it has been described with great compassion for us.

Now tell us in detail what Viṣṇu did after Nārada had left the place? And where did Nārada go?

Vyāsa said: On hearing these words of the sages, Sūta the wise and excellent scholar of Purāṇas remembered Śiva, the cause of different kinds of creation and replied.

sUta uvAca ॥ munau yadRcchayA viSNurgate tasminhi nArade॥ zivecchayA cakArAzu mAyA mAyAvizAradaH ॥ 4 ॥
Sūta said: When Nārada went away casually Viṣṇu, skilful in wielding his Māyā, spread his Māyā, as Śiva had willed.

munimArgasya madhye tu virece nagaraM mahat ॥ zatayojanavistAramadbhutaM sumanoharam॥5॥
On the path taken by the sage He created a big wonderful city. It was a hundred Yojanas in extent and surprisingly beautiful.

svalokAdadhikaM ramyaM nAnAvastuvirAjitam ॥ naranArIvihArADhyaM caturvarNAkulaM param ॥6॥
It was far more beautiful than heaven. Many articles were displayed there. Men and women of all the four castes stayed there.

The wealthy and prosperous king of that city named Śīlanidhi was preparing for the gorgeous celebration of the voluntary wooing (Svayaṃvara) of his daughter.

caturdigbhyaH samAyAtaissaMyutaM nRpanandataiH ॥ nAnAveSaissuzobhaizca tatkanyAvaraNotsukaiH ॥8॥
Brilliant princes coming from all the four quarters eager to court the princess had thronged there dressed in diverse ways.

etAdRzaM puraM dRSTvA mohaM prApto'tha nAradaH ॥ kautukI tannRpadvAraM jagAma madanedhitaH ॥9॥
On seeing such a splendid city Nārada was enchanted. With his love kindled, he eagerly went to the palace threshold.

AgataM munivaryaM taM dRSTvA zIlanidhirnRpaH ॥ upavezyArcayAMcakre ratnasiMhAsane vare ॥2-1-3-10॥
When the sage reached the palace the king Śīlanidhi adored him, having offered him a seat on the splendid throne studded with precious gems.

He called his daughter Śrīmatī and asked her to kneel down at the feet of Nārada.

tatkanyAM prekSya sa munirnAradaH prAha vismitaH ॥ keyaM rAjanmahAbhAgA kanyA surasutopamA ॥ 12 ॥
Being struck with wonder on seeing the girl, Nārada said—“O king, who is this lovely girl comparable to celestial damsels?”

tasya tadvacanaM zrutvA rAjA prAha kRtAMjaliH ॥ duhiteyaM mama mune zrImatI nAma nAmataH ॥ 13 ॥
On hearing the words of the sage, the king replied with his palms joined in reverence—“O sage, this is my daughter Śrīmatī.

प्रदानसमयं प्राप्ता वरमन्वेषती शुभम् ॥ सा स्वयंवरसंप्राप्ता सर्वलक्षणलक्षिता ॥ १४ ॥
pradAnasamayaM prAptA varamanveSatI zubham ॥ sA svayaMvarasaMprAptA sarvalakSaNalakSitA ॥ 14 ॥
She has attained the marriageable age. She is in search of a qualified bridegroom. She has all charms and accomplishments and her Svayaṃvara is imminent.

अस्या भाग्यं वद मुने सर्वं जातकमादरात्॥ कीदृशं तनयेयं मे वरमाप्स्यति तद्वद ॥१५॥
asyA bhAgyaM vada mune sarvaM jAtakamAdarAt॥ kIdRzaM tanayeyaM me varamApsyati tadvada ॥15॥
O sage, kindly foretell her destiny, everything that is in her horoscope. Please tell me what sort of a husband she will get.”

ityukto munizArdUlastAmicchuH kAmavihvalaH॥ samAbhASya sa rAjAnaM nArado vAkyamabravIt ॥16॥
By the time these words were spoken Nārada had become an agitated victim of love and desired her. Addressing the king, he said thus:—

सुतेयं तव भूपाल सर्वलक्षणलक्षिता॥ महाभाग्यवती धन्या लक्ष्मीरिव गुणालया ॥१७॥
suteyaM tava bhUpAla sarvalakSaNalakSitA॥ mahAbhAgyavatI dhanyA lakSmIriva guNAlayA ॥17॥
“O great king, this daughter of yours is endowed with all characteristics: She is highly fortunate and blessed like Lakṣmī. She is an abode of all qualities.

सर्वेश्वरोऽजितो वीरो गिरीशसदृशो विभुः ॥ अस्याः पतिर्ध्रुवं भावी कामजित्सुरसत्तमः ॥१८॥
sarvezvaro'jito vIro girIzasadRzo vibhuH ॥ asyAH patirdhruvaM bhAvI kAmajitsurasattamaH ॥18॥
Her future husband will certainly be a splendid God, lord of all, unvanquished, heroic, on a par with Śiva, and Vying with Kāmadeva”.

इत्युक्त्वा नृपमामंत्र्य ययौ यादृच्छिको मुनिः॥ बभूव कामविवशश्शिवमाया विमोहितः॥१९॥
ityuktvA nRpamAmaMtrya yayau yAdRcchiko muniH॥ babhUva kAmavivazazzivamAyA vimohitaH॥19॥
Having said this, the casual visitor Nārada took leave of the king. Deluded by Śiva’s Māyā he was extremely oppressed by love.

चित्ते विचिन्त्य स मुनिराप्नुयां कथमेनकाम्॥ स्वयंवरे नृपालानामेकं मां वृणुयात्कथम्॥2-1-3-२०॥
citte vicintya sa munirApnuyAM kathamenakAm॥ svayaMvare nRpAlAnAmekaM mAM vRNuyAtkatham॥2-1-3-20॥
The sage began to muse—“How shall I get her? How shall she woo me amongst the princes in the Svayaṃvara hall.

सौन्दर्यं सर्वनारीणां प्रियं भवति सर्वथा॥ तद्दृष्ट्वैव प्रसन्ना सा स्ववशा नात्र संशयः॥२१॥
saundaryaM sarvanArINAM priyaM bhavati sarvathA॥ taddRSTvaiva prasannA sA svavazA nAtra saMzayaH॥21॥
A comely appearance appeals to all women in every respect. Only by seeing a charming personality will she become enamoured.

विधायेत्थं विष्णुरूपं ग्रहीतुं मुनिसत्तमः ॥ विष्णुलोकं जगामाशु नारदः स्मरविह्वलः॥२२॥
vidhAyetthaM viSNurUpaM grahItuM munisattamaH ॥ viSNulokaM jagAmAzu nAradaH smaravihvalaH॥22॥
Thinking thus, Nārada who was agitated by love, went to Viṣṇuloka somehow to acquire Viṣṇu’s form to captivate her.

प्रणिपत्य हृषीकेशं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह॥ रहसि त्वां प्रवक्ष्यामि स्ववृत्तान्तमशेषतः ॥२३॥
praNipatya hRSIkezaM vAkyametaduvAca ha॥ rahasi tvAM pravakSyAmi svavRttAntamazeSataH ॥23॥
He saluted Viṣṇu and said—“I shall tell you secretly my affairs entirely.”

When Viṣṇu who did everything according to Śiva’s wish agreed and asked him to narrate, the sage said:—

नारद उवाच॥ त्वदीयो भूपतिः शीलनिधिस्स वृषतत्परः॥ तस्य कन्या विशालाक्षी श्रीमतीवरवर्णिनी ॥२५॥
nArada uvAca॥ tvadIyo bhUpatiH zIlanidhissa vRSatatparaH॥ tasya kanyA vizAlAkSI zrImatIvaravarNinI ॥25॥
Nārada said: The king Śīlanidhi is one of your devotees. He is a righteous king. His daughter Śrīmatī is a maiden of very fair complexion and wide eyes.

जगन्मोहिन्यभिख्याता त्रैलोक्येप्यति सुन्दरी ॥ परिणेतुमहं विष्णो तामिच्छाम्यद्य मा चिरम्॥२६॥
jaganmohinyabhikhyAtA trailokyepyati sundarI ॥ pariNetumahaM viSNo tAmicchAmyadya mA ciram॥26॥
She has the lustre of Jaganmohinī (enchantress of the universe—a manifestation of Viṣṇu) and is the most beautiful woman in all the three worlds. O Viṣṇu, I wish to marry her without delay.

स्वयंवरं चकरासौ भूपतिस्तनयेच्छया॥ चतुर्दिग्भ्यः समायाता राजपुत्रास्सहस्रशः ॥२७॥
svayaMvaraM cakarAsau bhUpatistanayecchayA॥ caturdigbhyaH samAyAtA rAjaputrAssahasrazaH ॥27॥
The king at the request of the princess has arranged for a Svayaṃvara. Thousands of Princes have come from all the four quarters.

यदि दास्यसि रूपं मे तदा तां प्राप्नुयां ध्रुवम् ॥ त्वद्रूपं सा विना कंठे जयमालां न धास्यति ॥२८॥
yadi dAsyasi rUpaM me tadA tAM prApnuyAM dhruvam ॥ tvadrUpaM sA vinA kaMThe jayamAlAM na dhAsyati ॥28॥
If you can favour me with a splendid form I shall be able to gain her certainly. She will not put the wedding garland round my neck without your splendid form.

स्वरूपं देहि मे नाथ सेवकोऽहं प्रियस्तव ॥ वृणुयान्मां यथा सा वै श्रीमती क्षितिपात्मजा॥ २९ ॥
svarUpaM dehi me nAtha sevako'haM priyastava ॥ vRNuyAnmAM yathA sA vai zrImatI kSitipAtmajA॥ 29 ॥
O lord! give me your form. I am your servant and favourite. Give me your beautiful form so that the princess Śrīmatī may choose me.

सुत उवाच ॥ वचः श्रुत्वा मुनेरित्थं विहस्य मधुसूदनः ॥ शांकरीं प्रभुतां बुद्ध्वा प्रत्युवाच दयापरः॥2-1-3-३०॥
suta uvAca ॥ vacaH zrutvA muneritthaM vihasya madhusUdanaH ॥ zAMkarIM prabhutAM buddhvA pratyuvAca dayAparaH॥2-1-3-30॥
Sūta said: On hearing these words of the sage Viṣṇu, the slayer of Madhu demon laughed and sympathetically replied, bearing in mind the overwhelming power of Śiva.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ स्वेष्टदेशं मुने गच्छ करिष्यामि हितं तव॥ भिषग्वरो यथार्त्तस्य यतः प्रियतरोऽसि मे॥३१॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ sveSTadezaM mune gaccha kariSyAmi hitaM tava॥ bhiSagvaro yathArttasya yataH priyataro'si me॥31॥
Viṣṇu said: “O sage, you can go to the place where you wish. I shall do what is beneficent to you in the manner of a physician doing what is good to the patient, since you are a great favourite of mine.”

इत्युक्त्वा मुनये तस्मै ददौ विष्णुर्मुखं हरे॥ स्वरूपमनुगृह्यास्य तिरोधानं जगाम सः॥३२॥
ityuktvA munaye tasmai dadau viSNurmukhaM hare॥ svarUpamanugRhyAsya tirodhAnaM jagAma saH॥32॥
After saying thus, Viṣṇu blessed the sage with a form like his own and the face of Hari (i.e. the monkey since the word Hari means a monkey also). The lord then vanished.

एवमुक्तो मुनिर्हृष्टः स्वरूपं प्राप्य वै हरेः॥ मेने कृतार्थमात्मानं तद्यत्नं न बुबोध सः ॥३३॥
evamukto munirhRSTaH svarUpaM prApya vai hareH॥ mene kRtArthamAtmAnaM tadyatnaM na bubodha saH ॥33॥
The sage thus consoled became highly delighted on receiving Hari’s form. He was contented but did not know the scheme behind the scene.

अथ तत्र गतः शीघ्रन्नारदो मुनिसत्तमः॥ चक्रे स्वयंवरं यत्र राजपुत्रैस्समाकुलम् ॥ ३४ ॥
atha tatra gataH zIghrannArado munisattamaH॥ cakre svayaMvaraM yatra rAjaputraissamAkulam ॥ 34 ॥
The great sage Nārada hastened to the place where Svayaṃvara was to be held and where the princes had assembled.

स्वयंवरसभा दिव्या राजपुत्रसमावृता॥ शुशुभेऽतीव विप्रेन्द्रा यथा शक्रसभा परा ॥३५॥
svayaMvarasabhA divyA rAjaputrasamAvRtA॥ zuzubhe'tIva viprendrA yathA zakrasabhA parA ॥35॥
O great brahmins, the Svayaṃvara hall splendidly decorated and graced by so many princes shone like another council-chamber of Indra.

तस्यां नृपसभायां वै नारदः समुपाविशत् ॥ स्थित्वा तत्र विचिन्त्येति प्रीतियुक्तेन चेतसा ॥३६॥
tasyAM nRpasabhAyAM vai nAradaH samupAvizat ॥ sthitvA tatra vicintyeti prItiyuktena cetasA ॥36॥
Nārada too went in and sat down in the hall of his king. With his mind surging with love he began to think like this.

मां वरिष्यति नान्यं सा विष्णुरूपधरन्ध्रुवम् ॥ आननस्य कुरूपत्वं न वेद मुनिसत्तमः ॥ ३७ ॥
mAM variSyati nAnyaM sA viSNurUpadharandhruvam ॥ Ananasya kurUpatvaM na veda munisattamaH ॥ 37 ॥
“She will choose only me since I am in Viṣṇu’s form”. The poor sage did not know the ugly character of his face.

पूर्वरूपं मुनिं सर्वे ददृशुऽस्तत्र मानवाः। तद्भेदं बुबुधुस्ते न राजपुत्रादयो द्विजाः ॥ ३८ ॥
pUrvarUpaM muniM sarve dadRzu'statra mAnavAH। tadbhedaM bubudhuste na rAjaputrAdayo dvijAH ॥ 38 ॥
The men assembled there saw the sage only in his old form. O brahmins, the princes and others did not know the difference created therein.

तत्र रुद्रगणौ द्वौ तद्रक्षणार्थं समागतौ ॥ विप्ररूपधरौ गूढौ तत्रेदं जज्ञतुः परम्॥३९॥
tatra rudragaNau dvau tadrakSaNArthaM samAgatau ॥ viprarUpadharau gUDhau tatredaM jajJatuH param॥39॥
Two of the attendants of Rudra knew this difference. They had come there in the guise of brahmins in order to protect him.

मूढं मत्वा मुनिं तौ तन्निकटं जग्मतुर्गणौ ॥ कुरुतस्तत्प्रहासं वै भाषमाणौ परस्परम् ॥ 2-1-3-४० ॥
mUDhaM matvA muniM tau tannikaTaM jagmaturgaNau ॥ kurutastatprahAsaM vai bhASamANau parasparam ॥ 2-1-3-40 ॥
Considering the sage a fool, the two attendants sat near the sage and began to mock at him seemingly conversing between themselves.

पश्य नारद रूपं हि विष्णोरिव महोत्तमम् ॥ मुखं तु वानरस्येव विकटं च भयंकरम् ॥ ४१ ॥
pazya nArada rUpaM hi viSNoriva mahottamam ॥ mukhaM tu vAnarasyeva vikaTaM ca bhayaMkaram ॥ 41 ॥
See Nārada’s features as splendid as Viṣṇu’s, but the face as that of a monkey deformed and awful.

इच्छत्ययं नृपसुता वृथैव स्मरमोहितः ॥ इत्युक्त्वा सच्छलं वाक्यमुपहासं प्रचक्रतुः ॥ ४२ ॥
icchatyayaM nRpasutA vRthaiva smaramohitaH ॥ ityuktvA sacchalaM vAkyamupahAsaM pracakratuH ॥ 42 ॥
Being deluded by Kāma he wishes to marry the Princess”. With these and other veiled remarks they mocked at him.

O brahmins, they returned to their abode and sitting there quietly went on eulogising Śiva. They considered everything as Śiva’s will.
