ऋषय ऊचुः ॥ मुक्तिर्नाम त्वया प्रोक्ता तस्यां किं नु भवेदिह ॥ अवस्था कीदृशी तत्र भवेदिति वदस्व नः ॥ १ ॥
RSaya UcuH ॥ muktirnAma tvayA proktA tasyAM kiM nu bhavediha ॥ avasthA kIdRzI tatra bhavediti vadasva naH ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said.— What is liberation has been explained by you. What will happen in that state? What is the nature of that state? Please explain to us.

सूत उवाच ॥। मुक्तिश्चतुर्विधा प्रोक्ता श्रूयतां कथयामि वः ॥ संसारक्लेशसंहर्त्री परमानन्ददायिनी ॥ २ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥। muktizcaturvidhA proktA zrUyatAM kathayAmi vaH ॥ saMsAraklezasaMhartrI paramAnandadAyinI ॥ 2 ॥
Sūta said:— Liberation is of four types. May this be heard. I shall tell you. It quells the pain of worldly existence. It bestows the greatest bliss.

सारूप्या चैव सालोक्या सान्निध्या च तथा परा ॥ सायुज्या च चतुर्थी सा व्रतेनानेन या भवेत् ॥ ३॥
sArUpyA caiva sAlokyA sAnnidhyA ca tathA parA ॥ sAyujyA ca caturthI sA vratenAnena yA bhavet ॥ 3॥
It is fourfold:—Sārūpya (identity in form), Sālokya (being within the view of the lord or in the same world), Sānnidhya (proximity with the lord), and Sāyujya (complete identity with him). The fourth arises out of this Vrata.

मुक्तेर्दाता मुनिश्रेष्ठाः केवलं शिव उच्यते॥ ब्रह्माद्या न हि ते ज्ञेया केवलं च त्रिवर्गदाः ॥ ४॥
mukterdAtA munizreSThAH kevalaM ziva ucyate॥ brahmAdyA na hi te jJeyA kevalaM ca trivargadAH ॥ 4॥
O great sages, only Śiva can bestow liberation. Brahmā and others cannot do that. They shall be known as bestowers of virtue, wealth and love.

ब्रह्माद्यास्त्रिगुणाधीशाश्शिवस्त्रिगुणतः परः ॥ निर्विकारी परब्रह्म तुर्यः प्रकृतितः परः ॥ ५॥
brahmAdyAstriguNAdhIzAzzivastriguNataH paraH ॥ nirvikArI parabrahma turyaH prakRtitaH paraH ॥ 5॥
Brahmā and others are dependent on the attributes. Śiva is beyond the attributes. He is free from aberrations. He is the great Brahman, the fourth deity, greater than Prakṛti.

ज्ञानरूपोऽव्ययः साक्षी ज्ञानगम्योऽद्वयस्स्वयम् ॥ कैवल्यमुक्तिदस्सोऽत्र त्रिवर्गस्य प्रदोऽपि हि ॥ ६॥
jJAnarUpo'vyayaH sAkSI jJAnagamyo'dvayassvayam ॥ kaivalyamuktidasso'tra trivargasya prado'pi hi ॥ 6॥
He is in the form of knowledge. He is imperishable and unchangeable. He is the cosmic witness, attainable through knowledge. He is without a second. He is the bestower of Trivarga (Dharma, Artha, Kāma) and the Kaivalya liberation.

कैवल्याख्या पंचमी च दुर्लभा सर्वथा नृणाम् ॥ तल्लक्षणं प्रवक्ष्यामि श्रूयतामृषिसत्तमाः ॥ ७ ॥
kaivalyAkhyA paMcamI ca durlabhA sarvathA nRNAm ॥ tallakSaNaM pravakSyAmi zrUyatAmRSisattamAH ॥ 7 ॥
A fifth type of salvation Kaivalya is inaccessible to men in every respect. O excellent sages, I shall explain its characteristics. May that be heard.

उत्पद्यते यतः सर्वं येनैतत्पाल्यते जगत् ॥ यस्मिंश्च लीयते तद्धि येन सर्वमिदं ततम् ॥ ८ ॥
utpadyate yataH sarvaM yenaitatpAlyate jagat ॥ yasmiMzca lIyate taddhi yena sarvamidaM tatam ॥ 8 ॥
From whom everything arises and by whom this universe is maintained. And in whom it merges it is by whom all this is pervaded.

तदेव शिवरूपं हि पठ्यते च मुनीश्वराः ॥ सकलं निष्कलं चेति द्विविधं वेदवर्णितम् ॥ ९ ॥
tadeva zivarUpaM hi paThyate ca munIzvarAH ॥ sakalaM niSkalaM ceti dvividhaM vedavarNitam ॥ 9 ॥
That very form of Lord Shiva is also recited by the great sages. There are two kinds of things described in the Vedas, the whole and the pure.

विष्णुना तच्च न ज्ञातं ब्रह्मणा न च तत्तथा ॥ कुमाराद्यैश्च न ज्ञातं न ज्ञातं नारदेन वै ॥ १०॥
viSNunA tacca na jJAtaM brahmaNA na ca tattathA ॥ kumArAdyaizca na jJAtaM na jJAtaM nAradena vai ॥ 10॥
It is not known to Viṣṇu nor to Bhahmā. It is not known to Kumāra and others nor to Nārada.

शुकेन व्यास पुत्रेण व्यासेन च मुनीश्वरैः। तत्पूर्वैश्चाखिलैर्देवैर्वेदैः शास्त्रैस्तथा न हि॥ ११॥
zukena vyAsa putreNa vyAsena ca munIzvaraiH। tatpUrvaizcAkhilairdevairvedaiH zAstraistathA na hi॥ 11॥
It is not known to Śuka, son of Vyāsa nor to Vyāsa or other great sages. It is not known to the earlier beings, all the gods, all the Vedas and all the Śāstras.

सत्यं ज्ञानमनंतं च सच्चिदानन्दसंज्ञितम्॥ निर्गुणो निरुपाधिश्चाव्ययः शुद्धो निरंजनः ॥ १२॥
satyaM jJAnamanaMtaM ca saccidAnandasaMjJitam॥ nirguNo nirupAdhizcAvyayaH zuddho niraMjanaH ॥ 12॥
It is truth, knowledge, the infinity. It is named Saccidānanda (existence, knowledge, bliss). It is Nirguṇa, Nirvyādhi (free from limitations and conditions). It is imperishable. It is pure and unsullied.

न रक्तो नैव पीतश्च न श्वेतो नील एव च ॥ न ह्रस्वो न च दीर्घश्च न स्थूलस्सूक्ष्म एव च॥ १३॥
na rakto naiva pItazca na zveto nIla eva ca ॥ na hrasvo na ca dIrghazca na sthUlassUkSma eva ca॥ 13॥
It is neither red nor yellow, neither white nor blue, neither short nor long, neither gross nor subtle.

यतो वाचो निवर्तंते अप्राप्य मनसा सह॥ तदेव परमं प्रोक्तं ब्रह्मैव शिवसंज्ञकम्॥ १४॥
yato vAco nivartaMte aprApya manasA saha॥ tadeva paramaM proktaM brahmaiva zivasaMjJakam॥ 14॥
That great Brahman Śiva is said to be that from which all words return along with the mīnd, unable to attain it.

आकाशं व्यापकं यद्वत्तथैव व्यापकन्त्विदम्॥ मायातीतं परात्मानं द्वन्द्वातीतं विमत्सरम् ॥ १५॥
AkAzaM vyApakaM yadvattathaiva vyApakantvidam॥ mAyAtItaM parAtmAnaM dvandvAtItaM vimatsaram ॥ 15॥
This is all pervasive like the expansive firmament. It is the great soul beyond Māyā. It is beyond Dvandvas mutually clashing opposites and free from rivalry.

तत्प्राप्तिश्च भवेदत्र शिवज्ञानोदयाद्ध्रुवम् ॥ भजनाद्वा शिवस्यैव सूक्ष्ममत्या सतां द्विजाः॥ १६॥
tatprAptizca bhavedatra zivajJAnodayAddhruvam ॥ bhajanAdvA zivasyaiva sUkSmamatyA satAM dvijAH॥ 16॥
O brahmins, good people attain it when knowledge of Śiva rises up or when they worship him with deep devotion.

ज्ञानं तु दुष्करं लोके भजनं सुकरं मतम् ॥ तस्माच्छिवं च भजत मुक्त्यर्थमपि सत्तमाः ॥ १७ ॥
jJAnaM tu duSkaraM loke bhajanaM sukaraM matam ॥ tasmAcchivaM ca bhajata muktyarthamapi sattamAH ॥ 17 ॥
The knowledge is difficult to attain but worship can easily be performed. Hence, O excellent sages, worship Śiva for the attainment of salvation too.

शिवो हि भजनाधीनो ज्ञानात्मा मोक्षदः परः ॥ भक्त्यैव बहवः सिद्धा मुक्तिं प्रापुः परां मुदा ॥ १८॥
zivo hi bhajanAdhIno jJAnAtmA mokSadaH paraH ॥ bhaktyaiva bahavaH siddhA muktiM prApuH parAM mudA ॥ 18॥
Śiva is subservient to worship. He is knowledge-souled and the greatest bestower of salvation. Many Siddhas have joyously attained the great salvation through devotion alone.

ज्ञानमाता शंभुभक्तिर्मुक्तिभुक्तिप्रदा सदा ॥ सुलभा यत्प्रसादाद्धि सत्प्रेमांकुर लक्षणा ॥ १९ ॥
jJAnamAtA zaMbhubhaktirmuktibhuktipradA sadA ॥ sulabhA yatprasAdAddhi satpremAMkura lakSaNA ॥ 19 ॥
Devotion to Śiva, characterised by sprouting pure love, is the mother of perfect knowledge. It is easy of access by means of his benevolence. It yields worldly pleasures and salvation too.

सा भक्तिर्विविधा ज्ञेया सगुणा निर्गुणा द्विजाः ॥ वैधी स्वाभाविकी याया वरा सासा स्मृता परा ॥ २० ॥
sA bhaktirvividhA jJeyA saguNA nirguNA dvijAH ॥ vaidhI svAbhAvikI yAyA varA sAsA smRtA parA ॥ 20 ॥
O brāhmaṇas that devotion should be understood to be of various kinds, with and without the modes of nature. Vaidhī is considered to be the best of all natural women.

नैष्ठिक्यनैष्ठिकीभेदाद्विविधैव हि कीर्तिता॥ षड्विधा नैष्ठिकी भेदाद्द्वितीयैकविधा स्मृता ॥ २१॥
naiSThikyanaiSThikIbhedAdvividhaiva hi kIrtitA॥ SaDvidhA naiSThikI bhedAddvitIyaikavidhA smRtA ॥ 21॥
There are two kinds of mentioned, according to the difference between faithfulness and non-faithfulness. There are six kinds of faithfulness, and the second is considered to be one kind.

विहिताविहिताभेदात्तामनेकां विदुर्बुधाः ॥ तयोर्बहुविधत्वाच्च विस्तारो न हि वर्ण्यते ॥ २२॥
vihitAvihitAbhedAttAmanekAM vidurbudhAH ॥ tayorbahuvidhatvAcca vistAro na hi varNyate ॥ 22॥
Learned men consider devotion to be of different sorts, such as ordained and non-ordained. Since they are of various types they are not explained in detail.

ते नवांगे उभे ज्ञेये श्रवणादिकभेदतः ॥ सुदुष्करे तत्प्रसादं विना च सुकरे ततः ॥ २३ ॥
te navAMge ubhe jJeye zravaNAdikabhedataH ॥ suduSkare tatprasAdaM vinA ca sukare tataH ॥ 23 ॥
Differentiated by the differences in those who observe Śravana (listening) etc. both these are of nine subdivisions each. Without his favour they are difficult of performance and with His favour they can easily be performed.

भक्तिज्ञाने न भिन्ने हि शंभुना वर्णिते द्विजाः ॥ तस्माद्भेदो न कर्तव्यस्तत्कर्तुस्सर्वदा सुखम् ॥ २४ ॥
bhaktijJAne na bhinne hi zaMbhunA varNite dvijAH ॥ tasmAdbhedo na kartavyastatkartussarvadA sukham ॥ 24 ॥
O brahmins, devotion and knowledge are essentially non-different from each other as explained by Śiva. Hence, they should not be differentiated. Happiness befalls him who observes them always.

विज्ञानं न भवत्येव द्विजा भक्तिविरोधिनः ॥ शंभुभक्तिकरस्यैव भवेज्ज्ञानोदयो द्रुतम् ॥ २५॥
vijJAnaM na bhavatyeva dvijA bhaktivirodhinaH ॥ zaMbhubhaktikarasyaiva bhavejjJAnodayo drutam ॥ 25॥
O brahmins, a person who is against devotion will never attain perfect knowledge. Knowledge rises up immediately only in him who observes devotion to Śiva.

तस्माद्भक्तिर्महेशस्य साधनीया मुनीश्वराः ॥ तयैव निखिलं सिद्धं भविष्यति न संशयः ॥ २६ ॥
tasmAdbhaktirmahezasya sAdhanIyA munIzvarAH ॥ tayaiva nikhilaM siddhaM bhaviSyati na saMzayaH ॥ 26 ॥
Hence, O great sages, devotion to lord Śiva shall be practised. There is no doubt in this that everything is realisable solely through devotion.

इति पृष्टं भवद्भिर्यत्तदेव कथितं मया ॥ तच्छुत्वा सर्वपापेभ्यो मुच्यते नात्र संशयः ॥ २७ ॥
iti pRSTaM bhavadbhiryattadeva kathitaM mayA ॥ tacchutvA sarvapApebhyo mucyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 27 ॥
Thus, what has been asked by you has been explained. There is no doubt in this that on hearing this, one is rid of his sin completely.
