॥ sUta uvAca ॥ zrutvA viSNukRtaM divyaM paranAmavibhUSitam ॥ sahasranAmasvastotraM prasanno'bhUnmahezvaraH ॥ 1 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing the eulogy made by Viṣṇu consisting of the hymn of his thousand divine names lord Śiva became delighted.

In order to test Viṣṇu, Śiva, the lord of the worlds concealed one of the lotus-flowers.

paMkajeSu tadA teSu sahasreSu babhUva ca ॥ nyUnamekaM tadA viSNurvihvalazzivapUjane ॥ 3 ॥
There was a shortage of one lotus-flower from among the thousand lotuses. Hence Viṣṇu was distressed in the course of his worship of Śiva.

हृदा विचारितं तेन कुतो वै कमलं गतम् ॥ यातं यातु सुखेनैव मन्नेत्रं कमलं न किम् ॥ ४ ॥
hRdA vicAritaM tena kuto vai kamalaM gatam ॥ yAtaM yAtu sukhenaiva mannetraM kamalaM na kim ॥ 4 ॥
He thought within himself “Where could the lotus-flower have gone? If it has gone, let it go for good. Is not my own eye a lotus?

jJAtveti netramuddhRtya sarvasattvAvalambanAt ॥ pUjayAmAsa bhAvena stavayAmAsa tena ca ॥ 5 ॥
After thinking thus, he plucked out his eye and repeated the last name Sarvasattvāvalambana. Full of emotion he worshipped and eulogised Śiva.

ततः स्तुतमथो दृष्ट्वा तथाभूतं हरो हरिम् ॥ मा मेति व्याहरन्नेव प्रादुरासीज्जगद्गुरुः ॥ ६॥
tataH stutamatho dRSTvA tathAbhUtaM haro harim ॥ mA meti vyAharanneva prAdurAsIjjagadguruH ॥ 6॥
On seeing Viṣṇu in that attitude, Viṣṇu the preceptor of the universe appeared before him and forbade him do that.

tasmAdavatatArAzu maNDalAtpArthivasya ca ॥ pratiSThitasya hariNA svaliMgasya mahezvaraH ॥ 7॥
Lord Śiva descended from the pedestal of that earthern phallic image installed by Viṣṇu.

यथोक्तरूपिणं शम्भुं तेजोराशिसमुत्थितम् ॥ नमस्कृत्य पुरः स्थित्वा स तुष्टाव विशेषतः ॥ ८ ॥
yathoktarUpiNaM zambhuM tejorAzisamutthitam ॥ namaskRtya puraH sthitvA sa tuSTAva vizeSataH ॥ 8 ॥
Bowing to Śiva, rising up in the form of a mass of splendour as mentioned before, Viṣṇu stood in front of him and eulogised him particularly.

तदा प्राह महादेवः प्रसन्नः प्रहसन्निव ॥ सम्प्रेक्ष्य कृपया विष्णुं कृतांजलिपुटं स्थितम् ॥ ९ ॥
tadA prAha mahAdevaH prasannaH prahasanniva ॥ samprekSya kRpayA viSNuM kRtAMjalipuTaM sthitam ॥ 9 ॥
Looking mercifully at Viṣṇu, who stood before him with palms joined in reverence, the delighted lord Śiva laughingly said then.

zaGkara uvAca॥ jJAtaM mayedaM sakalaM tava cittepsitaM hare ॥ devakAryaM vizeSeNa devakAryyaratAtmanaH ॥ 10 ॥
Śiva said:— O Viṣṇu, all the desires in your mind, particularly the task of the gods have been understood by me. Indeed you are engaged in the task of the gods.

देवकार्य्यस्य सिद्ध्यर्थं दैत्यनाशाय चाश्रमम् ॥ सुदर्शनाख्यं चक्रं च ददामि तव शोभनम् ॥ ११ ॥
devakAryyasya siddhyarthaM daityanAzAya cAzramam ॥ sudarzanAkhyaM cakraM ca dadAmi tava zobhanam ॥ 11 ॥
For the achievement of the task of the gods and for the destruction of the Daityas without strain, I shall give the auspicious discus Sudarśana to you.

यद्रूपं भवता दृष्टं सर्वलोकसुखावहम् ॥ हिताय तव देवेश धृतं भावय तद्ध्रुवम् ॥ १२ ॥
yadrUpaM bhavatA dRSTaM sarvalokasukhAvaham ॥ hitAya tava deveza dhRtaM bhAvaya taddhruvam ॥ 12 ॥
O lord of the gods, for your benefit ponder over this form, pleasing to all the worlds, which has seen by you (now).

रणाजिरे स्मृतं तद्वै देवानां दुःखनाशनम् ॥ इदं चक्रमिदं रूपमिदं नामसहस्रकम् ॥ १३ ॥
raNAjire smRtaM tadvai devAnAM duHkhanAzanam ॥ idaM cakramidaM rUpamidaM nAmasahasrakam ॥ 13 ॥
If this discus, this form and this hymn of thousand names is remembered in the battlefield it will quell the misery of the gods.

ये शृण्वन्ति सदा भक्त्या सिद्धि स्यादनपायिनी ॥ कामानां सकलानां च प्रसादान्मम सुव्रत ॥ १४॥
ye zRNvanti sadA bhaktyA siddhi syAdanapAyinI ॥ kAmAnAM sakalAnAM ca prasAdAnmama suvrata ॥ 14॥
O one of good rites, thanks to my blessings, all those who listen to this will achieve their desires without serious dangers.

सूत उवाच ॥ एवमुक्त्वा ददौ चक्रं सूर्यायुतसमप्रभम् ॥ सुदर्शनं स्वपादोत्थं सर्वशत्रुविनाशनम् ॥ १५ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ evamuktvA dadau cakraM sUryAyutasamaprabham ॥ sudarzanaM svapAdotthaM sarvazatruvinAzanam ॥ 15 ॥
Sūta said:— After saying this, the lord gave the discus of the brilliance of ten thousand suns, born of his own feet and destructive of all enemies, to Viṣṇu.

विष्णुश्चापि सुसंस्कृत्य जग्राहोदङ्मुखस्तदा॥ नमस्कृत्य महादेवं विष्णुर्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ १६ ॥
viSNuzcApi susaMskRtya jagrAhodaGmukhastadA॥ namaskRtya mahAdevaM viSNurvacanamabravIt ॥ 16 ॥
Viṣṇu purified himself and accepted it facing the north. After making obeisance to lord Śiva, Viṣṇu spoke these words to him.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ शृणु देव मया ध्येयं पठनीयं च किं प्रभो ॥ दुःखानां नाशनार्थं हि वद त्वं लोकशंकर ॥ १७ ॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ zRNu deva mayA dhyeyaM paThanIyaM ca kiM prabho ॥ duHkhAnAM nAzanArthaM hi vada tvaM lokazaMkara ॥ 17 ॥
Viṣṇu said:— O lord, O benefactor of the worlds, listen. Please tell me what I shall meditate upon and what I shall recite for the destruction of the distress.

सूत उवाच ॥ इति पृष्टस्तदा तेन सन्तुष्टस्तु शिवोऽब्रवीत् ॥ प्रसन्नमानसो भूत्वा विष्णुं देवसहायकम् ॥ १८ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ iti pRSTastadA tena santuSTastu zivo'bravIt ॥ prasannamAnaso bhUtvA viSNuM devasahAyakam ॥ 18 ॥
Sūta said:— On being thus asked by him, Śiva becoming satisfied and delighted in his mind spoke to Viṣṇu who helped the gods.

॥ शिव उवाच ॥ रूपं ध्येयं हरे मे हि सर्वानर्थप्रशान्तये ॥ अनेकदुःखनाशार्थं पठ नामसहस्रकम् ॥ १९॥
॥ ziva uvAca ॥ rUpaM dhyeyaM hare me hi sarvAnarthaprazAntaye ॥ anekaduHkhanAzArthaM paTha nAmasahasrakam ॥ 19॥
Śiva said:— O Viṣṇu, it is my form that is to be meditated upon for subduing all mishaps. Recite my thousand names for destroying the distress that troubles you.

धार्य्यं चक्रं सदा मे हि सवार्भीष्टस्य सिद्धये ॥ त्वया विष्णो प्रयत्नेन सर्वचक्रवरं त्विदम् ॥ २० ॥
dhAryyaM cakraM sadA me hi savArbhISTasya siddhaye ॥ tvayA viSNo prayatnena sarvacakravaraM tvidam ॥ 20 ॥
For the attainment of your desires you shall hold this discus always. O Viṣṇu, this is the best of all discuses.

अन्ये च ये पठिष्यन्ति पाठयिष्यन्ति नित्यशः ॥ तेषां दुःखं न स्वप्नेऽपि जायते नात्र संशयः ॥ २१ ॥
anye ca ye paThiSyanti pAThayiSyanti nityazaH ॥ teSAM duHkhaM na svapne'pi jAyate nAtra saMzayaH ॥ 21 ॥
There is no doubt that those who recite and teach this hymn will have no misery at all even in dreams.

राज्ञा च संकटे प्राप्ते शतावृत्तिं चरेद्यदा ॥ साङ्गः च विधिसंयुक्तं कल्याणं लभते नरः ॥ २२॥
rAjJA ca saMkaTe prApte zatAvRttiM caredyadA ॥ sAGgaH ca vidhisaMyuktaM kalyANaM labhate naraH ॥ 22॥
When kings are in distress this worship with thousand names shall be repeated hundred times in accordance with the rules laid down and after due performance of the ancillary services people will have welfare.

रोगनाशकरं ह्येतद्विद्यावित्तदमुत्तमम् ॥ सर्वकामप्रदं पुण्यं शिवभक्तिप्रदं सदा ॥ २३ ॥
roganAzakaraM hyetadvidyAvittadamuttamam ॥ sarvakAmapradaM puNyaM zivabhaktipradaM sadA ॥ 23 ॥
This is destructive of distress. It yields learning and wealth. It is excellent and meritorious and bestows all desires and devotion to Śiva always.

यदुद्दिश्य फलं श्रेष्ठं पठिष्यन्ति नरास्त्विह ॥ सप्स्यन्ते नात्र संदेहः फलं तत्सत्यमुत्तमम् ॥ २४॥
yaduddizya phalaM zreSThaM paThiSyanti narAstviha ॥ sapsyante nAtra saMdehaH phalaM tatsatyamuttamam ॥ 24॥
People undoubtedly derive excellent benefits which they will have in view in reciting this.

यश्च प्रातस्समुत्थाय पूजां कृत्वा मदीयिकाम् ॥ पठते मत्समक्षं वै नित्यं सिद्धिर्न दूरतः ॥ २५ ॥
yazca prAtassamutthAya pUjAM kRtvA madIyikAm ॥ paThate matsamakSaM vai nityaM siddhirna dUrataH ॥ 25 ॥
Achievement is not far off if a person rising in the morning, performs my worship and recites this in my presence everyday.

ऐहिकीं सिद्धिमाप्नोति निखिलां सर्वकामिकाम् ॥ अन्ते सायुज्यमुक्तिं वै प्राप्नोत्यत्र न संशयः ॥ २६ ॥
aihikIM siddhimApnoti nikhilAM sarvakAmikAm ॥ ante sAyujyamuktiM vai prApnotyatra na saMzayaH ॥ 26 ॥
There is no doubt in this that he will attain all the worldly pleasures and desires and in the end Sāyujya type of salvation.

सूत उवाच ॥ एवमुक्त्वा तदा विष्णुं शंकरः प्रीतमानसः ॥ उपस्पृश्य कराभ्यां तमुवाच गिरिशः पुनः ॥ २७॥
sUta uvAca ॥ evamuktvA tadA viSNuM zaMkaraH prItamAnasaH ॥ upaspRzya karAbhyAM tamuvAca girizaH punaH ॥ 27॥
Sūta said:— Delighted in his mind, Śiva spoke thus to Viṣṇu and touched him with his hands. Śiva then told him again.

॥ शिव उवाच ॥ वरदोऽस्मि सुरश्रेष्ठ वरान्वृणु यथेप्सितान् ॥ भक्त्या वशीकृतो नूनं स्तवेनानेन सुव्रतः ॥ २८॥
॥ ziva uvAca ॥ varado'smi surazreSTha varAnvRNu yathepsitAn ॥ bhaktyA vazIkRto nUnaM stavenAnena suvrataH ॥ 28॥
Śiva said:— O most excellent of gods, I am the granter of the boons. Choose the boons you desire to have. O one of good rites, I am attracted by your devotion and by this hymn as well.

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ इत्युक्तो देवदेवेन देवदेवं प्रणम्य तम् ॥ सुप्रसन्नतरो विष्णुस्सांजलिर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥ २९ ॥
॥ sUta uvAca ॥ ityukto devadevena devadevaM praNamya tam ॥ suprasannataro viSNussAMjalirvAkyamabravIt ॥ 29 ॥
Sūta said:— Urged thus the delighted Viṣṇu bowed to the lord of gods and spoke with palms joined in reverence.

विष्णुरुवाच ॥ यथेदानीं कृपानाथ क्रियते चान्यतः परा ॥ कार्य्या चैव विशेषेण कृपालुत्वात्त्वया प्रभो ॥ ३०॥
viSNuruvAca ॥ yathedAnIM kRpAnAtha kriyate cAnyataH parA ॥ kAryyA caiva vizeSeNa kRpAlutvAttvayA prabho ॥ 30॥
Viṣṇu said:— O lord, you shall be equally merciful to others as well just as you are merciful to me now.

त्वयि भक्तिर्महादेव प्रसीद वरमुत्तमम् ॥ नान्यमिच्छामि भक्तानामार्त्तयो नैव यत्प्रभो ॥ ३१ ॥
tvayi bhaktirmahAdeva prasIda varamuttamam ॥ nAnyamicchAmi bhaktAnAmArttayo naiva yatprabho ॥ 31 ॥
O great lord, devotion to you is the excellent boon I wish to have. Be pleased. I do not wish for anything else, because, O lord, devotees are never distressed.

सूत उवाच ॥ तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य दया वान्सुतरां भवः ॥ पस्पर्श च तदंगं वै प्राह शीतांशुशेखरः ॥ ३२॥
sUta uvAca ॥ tacchrutvA vacanaM tasya dayA vAnsutarAM bhavaH ॥ pasparza ca tadaMgaM vai prAha zItAMzuzekharaH ॥ 32॥
Sūta said:— On hearing these words, the extremely sympathetic lord touched him. Then the moon-crested deity spoke.

शिव उवाच ॥ मयि भक्तिस्सदा ते तु हरे स्यादनपायिनी ॥ सदा वन्द्यश्च पूज्यश्च लोके भव सुरैरपि ॥ ३३॥
ziva uvAca ॥ mayi bhaktissadA te tu hare syAdanapAyinI ॥ sadA vandyazca pUjyazca loke bhava surairapi ॥ 33॥
Śiva said:— O Viṣṇu, your devotion to me will always remain firm. Be worthy of the reverence and worship of all gods in the world.

विष्वंभरेति ते नाम सर्वपापहरं परम् ॥ भविष्यति न संदेहो मत्प्रसादात्सुरोत्तम ॥ ३४ ॥
viSvaMbhareti te nAma sarvapApaharaM param ॥ bhaviSyati na saMdeho matprasAdAtsurottama ॥ 34 ॥
O most excellent god, there is no doubt in this that, thanks to my favour, your name—Viśvambhara (bearer of the universe) will be destructive of all sins.

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वांतर्दधे रुद्रस्सर्वदेवेश्वरः प्रभुः ॥ पश्यतस्तस्य विष्णोस्तु तत्रैव च मुनीश्वराः ॥ ३५ ॥
॥ sUta uvAca ॥ ityuktvAMtardadhe rudrassarvadevezvaraH prabhuH ॥ pazyatastasya viSNostu tatraiva ca munIzvarAH ॥ 35 ॥
Sūta said:— O great sages, after saying this, lord Śiva, the lord of the gods, vanished there itself even as Viṣṇu was watching.

जनार्दनोऽपि भगवान्वचनाच्छङ्करस्य च ॥ प्राप्य चक्रं शुभं तद्वै जहर्षाति स्वचेतसि ॥ ३६ ॥
janArdano'pi bhagavAnvacanAcchaGkarasya ca ॥ prApya cakraM zubhaM tadvai jaharSAti svacetasi ॥ 36 ॥
After securing the auspicious discus and hearing the words of Śiva, lord Viṣṇu was extremely delighted in his mind.

कृत्वा ध्यानं च तच्छम्भोः स्तोत्रमेतन्निरन्तरम् ॥ पपाठाध्यापयामास भक्तेभ्यस्तदुपादिशत्॥ ३७॥
kRtvA dhyAnaM ca tacchambhoH stotrametannirantaram ॥ papAThAdhyApayAmAsa bhaktebhyastadupAdizat॥ 37॥
Meditating on Śiva, he repeated the hymn incessantly and instructed the devotees too in this.

इति पृष्टं मयाख्यातं शृण्वताम्पापहारकम्॥ अतःपरं च किं श्रेष्ठाः प्रष्टुमिच्छथ वै पुनः॥ ३८॥
iti pRSTaM mayAkhyAtaM zRNvatAmpApahArakam॥ ataHparaM ca kiM zreSThAH praSTumicchatha vai punaH॥ 38॥
O excellent ones, thus I have narrated the story in accordance with your enquiry. It destroys the sins of those who listen to it. What then do you wish to ask?
