॥ sUta uvAca ॥ ataH paraM ca ghuzmezaM jyotirliMgamudAhRtam॥ tasyaiva ca sumAhAtmyaM zrUyatAmRSisattamaH ॥ 1॥
Sūta said:— O excellent sages, the next Jyotirliṅga to be mentioned is Ghuśmeśa. May its greatness be listened to.

दक्षिणस्यां दिशि श्रेष्ठो गिरिर्देवेति संज्ञकः ॥ महाशोभान्वितो नित्यं राजतेऽद्भुत दर्शनः ॥ २ ॥
dakSiNasyAM dizi zreSTho girirdeveti saMjJakaH ॥ mahAzobhAnvito nityaM rAjate'dbhuta darzanaH ॥ 2 ॥
There is the excellent mountain in the Southern region named Deva. It shines with great splendour and is very wonderful to view.

तस्यैव निकटे कश्चिद्भारद्वाजकुलोद्भवः ॥ सुधर्मा नाम विप्रश्च न्यवसद्ब्रह्मवित्तमः ॥ ३ ॥
tasyaiva nikaTe kazcidbhAradvAjakulodbhavaH ॥ sudharmA nAma viprazca nyavasadbrahmavittamaH ॥ 3 ॥
A certain brahmin Sudharmā who was the most excellent among the knowers of Brahman and who was born of Bhāradvāja Family lived near it.

tasya priyA sudehA ca zivadharmaparAyaNaH ॥ patisevAparA nityaM gRhakarmavicakSaNA ॥ 4॥
His beloved wife Sudehā was interested in Śaiva cult and sacred rites. She was skilful in all household activities and she devoutly served her husband.

सुधर्मा च द्विजश्रेष्ठो देवतातिथिपूजकः ॥ वेदमार्गपरो नित्यमग्नि सेवापरायणः ॥ ५॥
sudharmA ca dvijazreSTho devatAtithipUjakaH ॥ vedamArgaparo nityamagni sevAparAyaNaH ॥ 5॥
The excellent brahmin Sudharmā worshipped gods and guests. He was devotedly attached to the Vedic path and scrupulously maintained the sacrificial fires.

त्रिकालसंध्यया युक्तस्सूर्य्यरूपसमद्युतिः ॥ शिष्याणां पाठकश्चैव वेदशास्त्रविचक्षणः ॥ ६॥
trikAlasaMdhyayA yuktassUryyarUpasamadyutiH ॥ ziSyANAM pAThakazcaiva vedazAstravicakSaNaH ॥ 6॥
He had the brilliance of the Sun. He performed Sandhyā prayers thrice a day. He taught disciples and was an expert in the Vedas and Śāstras both.

धनवांश्च परो दाता सौजन्यगुणभाजनः ॥ शिवकर्मरतो नित्यं शैवश्शैवजनप्रियः ॥ ७॥
dhanavAMzca paro dAtA saujanyaguNabhAjanaH ॥ zivakarmarato nityaM zaivazzaivajanapriyaH ॥ 7॥
He was affluent and had also the qualities of gentlemanliness. He was a liberal donor, a devotee of Śiva, a favourite of his followers and he engaged himself in the sacred rites of Śiva-cult.

आयुर्बहु व्यतीयाय तस्य धर्मं प्रकुर्वतः ॥ पुत्रश्च नाभवत्तस्य ऋतुः स्यादफलः स्त्रियाः ॥ ८॥
Ayurbahu vyatIyAya tasya dharmaM prakurvataH ॥ putrazca nAbhavattasya RtuH syAdaphalaH striyAH ॥ 8॥
A long period in his life thus passed when he continued his religious rites but no son was born to him. His wife’s menstrual periods were fruitless. She did not conceive.

तेन दुःखं कृतं नैव वस्तुज्ञानपरेण हि ॥ आत्मनस्तारकश्चात्मा ह्यात्मनः पावनश्च सः ॥ ९ ॥
tena duHkhaM kRtaM naiva vastujJAnapareNa hi ॥ AtmanastArakazcAtmA hyAtmanaH pAvanazca saH ॥ 9 ॥
He did not grieve over this because he realised the reality of different things. He knew that the soul is the uplifter of the soul and the soul is the sanctifier of the soul.

इत्येवं मानसं धृत्वा दुःखं न कृतवान्स्तदा ॥ सुदेहा च तदा दुःखं चकार पुत्रसम्भवम् ॥ १०॥
ityevaM mAnasaM dhRtvA duHkhaM na kRtavAnstadA ॥ sudehA ca tadA duHkhaM cakAra putrasambhavam ॥ 10॥
Thinking thus he did not feel aggrieved even mentally. But Sudehā was distressed for not having a son.

nityaM ca svAminaM sA vai prArthayadyatnasAdhane ॥ putrotpAdanahetozca sarvavidyAvizAradam ॥ 11 ॥
Everyday she implored her learned husband to strive for the acquisition of a son.

सोऽपि स्त्रियं तदा भर्त्स्य किं पुत्रश्च करिष्यति ॥ का माता कः पिता पुत्रः को बंधुश्च प्रियश्च कः ॥ १२ ॥
so'pi striyaM tadA bhartsya kiM putrazca kariSyati ॥ kA mAtA kaH pitA putraH ko baMdhuzca priyazca kaH ॥ 12 ॥
He too will then marry a woman and what will his son do? Who is the mother who is the father who is the son who is the brother and who is the beloved

सर्वं स्वार्थपरं देवि त्रिलोक्यां नात्र संशयः ॥ जानीहि त्वं विशेषेण बुद्ध्या शोकं न वै कुरु ॥ १३ ॥
sarvaM svArthaparaM devi trilokyAM nAtra saMzayaH ॥ jAnIhi tvaM vizeSeNa buddhyA zokaM na vai kuru ॥ 13 ॥
Everything in the three worlds, O goddess, is undoubtedly selfish. Know that you should not grieve especially with your intelligence.

तस्माद्देवि त्वया दुःखं त्यजनीयं सुनिश्चितम् ॥ नित्यं मह्यं त्वया नैव कथनीयं शुभव्रते ॥ १४ ॥
tasmAddevi tvayA duHkhaM tyajanIyaM sunizcitam ॥ nityaM mahyaM tvayA naiva kathanIyaM zubhavrate ॥ 14 ॥
Therefore, O goddess, you should definitely give up your suffering. You should not tell me every day, O auspicious one.

एवं तां सन्निवार्य्यैव भगवद्धर्मतत्परः ॥ आसीत्परमसंतुष्टो द्वन्द्वदुःखं समत्यजत् ॥ १५॥
evaM tAM sannivAryyaiva bhagavaddharmatatparaH ॥ AsItparamasaMtuSTo dvandvaduHkhaM samatyajat ॥ 15॥
Thus he restrained her and became devoted to the dharma of the Lord. He was supremely satisfied and gave up the pain of duality.

कदाचिच्च सुदेहा वै गेहे च सहवासिनः ॥ जगाम प्रियगोष्ठ्यर्थं विवादस्तत्र संगतः ॥ १६॥
kadAcicca sudehA vai gehe ca sahavAsinaH ॥ jagAma priyagoSThyarthaM vivAdastatra saMgataH ॥ 16॥
Once Sudehā went to the neighbour’s house for a friendly chat but a quarrel arose there.

तत्पत्नी स्त्रीस्वभावाच्च भर्त्सिता सा तया तदा ॥ उक्ता चेति दुरुक्त्या वै सुदेहा विप्रकामिनी॥ १७॥
tatpatnI strIsvabhAvAcca bhartsitA sA tayA tadA ॥ uktA ceti duruktyA vai sudehA viprakAminI॥ 17॥
She was reproached by the neighbour’s wife as natural to women. Sudehā was aggrieved with her harsh words.

द्विजपत्न्युवाच ॥ अपुत्रिणि कथं गर्वं कुरुषे पुत्रिणी ह्यहम् ॥ मद्धनं भोक्ष्यते पुत्रो धनं ते कश्च भोक्ष्यते ॥ १८ ॥
dvijapatnyuvAca ॥ aputriNi kathaM garvaM kuruSe putriNI hyaham ॥ maddhanaM bhokSyate putro dhanaM te kazca bhokSyate ॥ 18 ॥
The neighbourly woman said:— O sonless woman, why are you arrogant? I have i son who will inherit my wealth. But there is none to inherit your property.

नूनं हरिष्यते राजा त्वद्धनं नात्र संशयः ॥ धिग्धिक्त्वां ते धनं धिक्च धिक्ते मानं हि वन्ध्यके ॥ १९ ॥
nUnaM hariSyate rAjA tvaddhanaM nAtra saMzayaH ॥ dhigdhiktvAM te dhanaM dhikca dhikte mAnaM hi vandhyake ॥ 19 ॥
Undoubtedly the king will confiscate your estate. O barren woman, fie upon you, upon your wealth, upon your honour and prestige.

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ भर्त्सिता ताभिरिति सा गृहमागत्य दुःखिता ॥ स्वामिने कथयामास तदुक्तं सर्वमादरात् ॥ २० ॥
॥ sUta uvAca ॥ bhartsitA tAbhiriti sA gRhamAgatya duHkhitA ॥ svAmine kathayAmAsa taduktaM sarvamAdarAt ॥ 20 ॥
Sūta said:— Thus reproached by her she returned home depressed. She narrated to her husband all what her neighbour had said to her.

ब्राह्मणोऽपि तदा दुःखं न चकार सुबुद्धिमान् ॥ कथितं कथ्यतामेव यद्भावि तद्भवेत्प्रिये ॥ २१ ॥
brAhmaNo'pi tadA duHkhaM na cakAra subuddhimAn ॥ kathitaM kathyatAmeva yadbhAvi tadbhavetpriye ॥ 21 ॥
The intelligent brahmin was not grieved by hearing it. He said “Let her say what she wishes, O beloved, what is destined to happen will happen.”

इत्येवं च तदा तेन ह्याश्वस्तापि पुनः पुनः ॥ न तदा सात्यजद्दुःखं ह्याग्रहं कृतवत्यसौ ॥ २२ ॥
ityevaM ca tadA tena hyAzvastApi punaH punaH ॥ na tadA sAtyajadduHkhaM hyAgrahaM kRtavatyasau ॥ 22 ॥
Thus pacified and consoled again and again by her husband she did not stop worrying. She again pleaded.

॥सुदेहोवाच ॥ यथा तथा त्वया पुत्रस्समुत्पाद्यः प्रियोऽसि मे ॥ त्यक्षामि ह्यन्यथाहं च देहं देहभृतां वर ॥ २३ ॥
॥sudehovAca ॥ yathA tathA tvayA putrassamutpAdyaH priyo'si me ॥ tyakSAmi hyanyathAhaM ca dehaM dehabhRtAM vara ॥ 23 ॥
Sudehā said:— You are my husband. Somehow you shall beget a son. O excellent among men, otherwise I shall cast off this body.

सूत उवाच ॥ एवमुक्तं तया श्रुत्वा सुधर्मा ब्राह्मणोत्तमः ॥ शिवं सस्मार मनसा तदाग्रहनिपीडितः॥ २४॥
sUta uvAca ॥ evamuktaM tayA zrutvA sudharmA brAhmaNottamaH ॥ zivaM sasmAra manasA tadAgrahanipIDitaH॥ 24॥
Sūta said:— On hearing what she said, Sudharmā the excellent brahmin, harassed by her importunities, mentally remembered Śiva.

अग्नेरग्रेऽक्षिपत्पुष्पद्वयं विप्रो ह्यतंद्रितः ॥ मनसा दक्षिणं पुष्पं तन्मेने पुत्रकामदम् ॥ २५ ॥
agneragre'kSipatpuSpadvayaM vipro hyataMdritaH ॥ manasA dakSiNaM puSpaM tanmene putrakAmadam ॥ 25 ॥
The alert brahmin offered two flowers to the sacrificial fire. He thought in his mind that the right side flower would yield a son.

एवं कृत्वा पणं पत्नीमुवाच ब्राह्मणस्स च ॥ अनयोर्ग्राह्यमेकं ते पुष्पं पुत्र फलाप्तये ॥ २६॥
evaM kRtvA paNaM patnImuvAca brAhmaNassa ca ॥ anayorgrAhyamekaM te puSpaM putra phalAptaye ॥ 26॥
Making this as a condition the brahmin told his wife. “You shall take one of these two flowers to decide about the acquisition of a son”

तया च मनसा धृत्वा पुत्रश्चैव भवेन्मम ॥ तदा च स्वामिना यच्च धृतं पुष्पं समेतु माम् ॥ २७ ॥
tayA ca manasA dhRtvA putrazcaiva bhavenmama ॥ tadA ca svAminA yacca dhRtaM puSpaM sametu mAm ॥ 27 ॥
With that in mind I shall also have a son Then may the flowers carried by the master meet me.

इत्युक्त्वा च तया तत्र नमस्कृत्य शिवं तदा ॥ नत्वा चाग्निं पुनः प्रार्थ्य गृहीतं पुष्पमेककम् ॥ २८ ॥
ityuktvA ca tayA tatra namaskRtya zivaM tadA ॥ natvA cAgniM punaH prArthya gRhItaM puSpamekakam ॥ 28 ॥
Having said this she then offered her obeisances to Lord Siva there. Bowing down to the fire he again prayed and took a single flower.

स्वामिना चिंतितं यच्च तद्गृहीतं तया न हि ॥ सुदेहया विमोहेन शिवेच्छासंभवेन वै॥ २९॥
svAminA ciMtitaM yacca tadgRhItaM tayA na hi ॥ sudehayA vimohena zivecchAsaMbhavena vai॥ 29॥
The insignia flower was missed by her due to delusion caused by Śiva’s desire.

तद्दृष्ट्वा पुरुषश्चैव निश्वासं पर्यमोचयत् ॥ स्मृत्वा शिवपदांभोजमुवाच निजकामिनीम् ॥ ३०॥
taddRSTvA puruSazcaiva nizvAsaM paryamocayat ॥ smRtvA zivapadAMbhojamuvAca nijakAminIm ॥ 30॥
On seeing it the husband sighed deeply. Remembering the lotus-like feet of Śiva he spoke to his beloved.

सुधर्मोवाच ॥ निर्मितं चेश्वरेणैव कथं चैवान्यथा भवेत् ॥ आशां त्यज प्रिये त्वं च परिचर्य्यां कुरु प्रभोः ॥ ३१॥
sudharmovAca ॥ nirmitaM cezvareNaiva kathaM caivAnyathA bhavet ॥ AzAM tyaja priye tvaM ca paricaryyAM kuru prabhoH ॥ 31॥
Sudharmā said:— O beloved, how can what is ordained by the lord be otherwise. Cast off your vain hopes. Render service to the lord.

इत्युक्त्वा तु स्वयं विप्र आशां परिविहाय च ॥ धर्मकार्यरतस्सोऽभूच्छंकरध्यानतत्परः ॥ ३२ ॥
ityuktvA tu svayaM vipra AzAM parivihAya ca ॥ dharmakAryaratasso'bhUcchaMkaradhyAnatatparaH ॥ 32 ॥
After saying so and giving up hope himself, the brahmin became engaged in sacred rites and meditation on Śiva.

सा सुदेहाग्रहं नैव मुमोचात्मजकाम्यया ॥ प्रत्युवाच पतिं प्रेम्णा सांजलिर्नतमस्तका ॥ ३३ ॥
sA sudehAgrahaM naiva mumocAtmajakAmyayA ॥ pratyuvAca patiM premNA sAMjalirnatamastakA ॥ 33 ॥
Yearning for a son Sudehā did not leave off her pleadings. With palms joined in reverence and bending her head she lovingly said to her husband.

मयि पुत्रो न चास्त्वन्या पत्नीं कुरु मदाज्ञया ॥ तस्यां नूनं सुतश्चैव भविष्यति न संशयः ॥ ३४॥
mayi putro na cAstvanyA patnIM kuru madAjJayA ॥ tasyAM nUnaM sutazcaiva bhaviSyati na saMzayaH ॥ 34॥
Sudehā said:— Let there be no son born of me. With my consent you shall take another wife. Undoubtedly she will bear you a son.

सूत उवाच ॥ तदैव प्रथितो वै स ब्रह्मणश्शैवसत्तमः ॥ उवाच स्वप्रियां तां च सुदेहां धर्म तत्परः ॥ ३५॥
sUta uvAca ॥ tadaiva prathito vai sa brahmaNazzaivasattamaH ॥ uvAca svapriyAM tAM ca sudehAM dharma tatparaH ॥ 35॥
Sūta said:— Requested thus by his beloved wife, that brahmin the most excellent of the devotees of Śiva and fond of sacred rites spoke to her.

सुधर्मोवाच ॥ त्वदीयं च मदीयं च सर्वं दुःखं गतं ध्रुवम् ॥ तस्मात्त्वं धर्मविघ्नं च प्रियो मा कुरु सांप्रतम् ॥ ३६॥
sudharmovAca ॥ tvadIyaM ca madIyaM ca sarvaM duHkhaM gataM dhruvam ॥ tasmAttvaM dharmavighnaM ca priyo mA kuru sAMpratam ॥ 36॥
Sudharmā said:— Our miseries have gone off, O beloved, do not put obstacles in our holy rites now.

सूत उवाच ॥ इत्येवं वारिता सा च स्वामातुः पुत्रिकां तदा ॥ गृहमानीय भर्तारं वृणु त्वेनामिदं जगौ ॥ ३७॥
sUta uvAca ॥ ityevaM vAritA sA ca svAmAtuH putrikAM tadA ॥ gRhamAnIya bhartAraM vRNu tvenAmidaM jagau ॥ 37॥
Sūta said:— Although prevented thus, she brought her mother’s younger daughter to her house and said to her husband “Take her.”

सुधर्मोवाच ॥ इदानीं वदसि त्वं च मत्प्रियेयं ततः पुनः ॥ पुत्रसूश्च यदा स्याद्वै तदा स्पर्द्धां करिष्यसि ॥ ३८॥
sudharmovAca ॥ idAnIM vadasi tvaM ca matpriyeyaM tataH punaH ॥ putrasUzca yadA syAdvai tadA sparddhAM kariSyasi ॥ 38॥
Sudharmā said:— Now you say that she must be my beloved wife. But should she give birth to a son you will begin to be jealous of her.

sUta uvAca॥ ityuktvA tena patinA sA sudehA ca tatpriyA ॥ punaH prAha karau baddhvA sudharmANaM patiM dvijAH ॥ 39 ॥
Sūta said:— O brahmins, when thus warned by her husband, Sudehā joined her palms in reverence and spoke to him,

नाहं स्पर्द्धां भगिन्या वै करिष्ये द्विजसत्तम ॥ उपयच्छस्व पुत्रार्थमिमामाज्ञापयामि च ॥ ४०॥
nAhaM sparddhAM bhaginyA vai kariSye dvijasattama ॥ upayacchasva putrArthamimAmAjJApayAmi ca ॥ 40॥
“O excellent brahmin, I will not be jealous of my own sister. Please marry her and beget a son. I urge upon you.”

Thus implored by her, Sudharmā married that lady Ghuśmā with due ceremonies.

After saying this, Sudharmā, the most excellent devotee of Śiva, pursued hīs sacred rites to the utmost with his mind leaning towards virtue.

Sudehā served her sister like a hired wench eschewing all opposition and lovingly nurtured her.

The junior wife with the consent of her sister, made hundred and one earthen idols every day.

According to the sacred rules Ghuśmā rendered devotional services to these images and threw them in the neighbouring lake.

Thus she performed the wish-yielding worship of Śiva every day leaving them off and invoking them again in accordance with the rules of devotional service.

Performing the worship of Śiva thus regularly she completed a hundred-thousand images and their worship which would yield the benefits of all desires.

kRpayA zaMkarasyaiva tasyAH putro vyajAyata ॥ sundarassubhagazcaiva kalyANaguNabhAjam ॥ 49 ॥
By the mercy of Śiva a son was born to her. He was beautiful, fortunate and endowed with all auspicious qualities.

On seeing him the brahmin was much delighted. Being the most excellent of all who knew virtue and engrossed in the virtues of knowledge he enjoyed the pleasure with due detachment.

sudehA tAvadasyAstu sparddhAmugrAM cakAra sA ॥ prathamaM zItalaM tasyA hRdayaM hyasivatpunaH ॥ 51 ॥
Then Sudehā grew fiercely jealous of her. Her heart which was cool and quiet before began to blaze like fire now.

tataH paraM ca yajjAtaM kutsitaM karma duHkhadam ॥ sAvadhAnena manasA zrUyatAM tanmunIzvarA ॥ 52 ॥
O great sages, may the despicable event that followed, causing misery, be heard with attention.
