॥ sUta uvAca ॥ zivo'pi ca gaNaissArddhaM jagAma hitakAmyayA ॥ svabhaktanikaTaM guptastasthau rakSArthamAdarAt ॥ 1 ॥
Sūta said:— With a desire to accord benefit to him Śiva stayed with his devotee along with his Gaṇas. In order to protect him he remained concealed there.

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे तत्र कामरूपेश्वरेण च ॥ अत्यंतं ध्यानमारब्धं पार्थिवस्य पुरस्तदा ॥ २ ॥
etasminnantare tatra kAmarUpezvareNa ca ॥ atyaMtaM dhyAnamArabdhaM pArthivasya purastadA ॥ 2 ॥
In the meantime a great meditation was started by the lord of Kāmarūpa in front of the earthen idol of Śiva.

kenacittatra gatvA ca rAkSasAya niveditam ॥ rAjA kiMcitkarotyevaM tvadarthaM hyAbhicArikam॥ 3॥
Then somebody informed the Rākṣasa, “The king is performing a black magic against you.”

sUta uvAca ॥ rAkSasassa ca tacchutvA kruddhastaddhananecchayA ॥ gRhItvA karavAlaM ca jagAma nRpatiM prati ॥ 4 ॥
Sūta said:— 4. On hearing it the Rākṣasa was infuriated. With a desire to kill him he seized a sword and rushed at the king.

taddRSTvA rAkSasastatra pArthivAdi sthitaM ca yat ॥ tadarthaM tatsvarUpaM ca dRSTvA kiMcitkarotyasau ॥ 5 ॥
Seeing that the demon and all that was standing there like the earth He does something for that purpose and seeing that form.

अत एनं बलादद्य हन्मि सोपस्करं नृपम् ॥ विचार्येति महाक्रुद्धो राक्षसः प्राह तं नृपम् ॥ ६ ॥
ata enaM balAdadya hanmi sopaskaraM nRpam ॥ vicAryeti mahAkruddho rAkSasaH prAha taM nRpam ॥ 6 ॥
Therefore I shall forcibly kill this king today along with his accessories The very angry demon said to the king 'Think about it'

bhIma uvAca ॥ rere pArthiva duSTAtmankriyate kiM tvayAdhunA ॥ satyaM vada na hanyAM tvAmanyathA hanmi nizcitam ॥ 7॥
Bhīma said:— O wicked king, what are you doing here? Tell me the truth. I shall not kill you then. Otherwise I will certainly kill you.

sUta uvAca ॥ iti zrutvA vacastasya kAmarUpezvarazca saH ॥ manasIti cicintAzu zivavizvAsapUritaH ॥ 8 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing his words, the lord of Kāmarūpa full of faith in Śiva thought within his mind thus.

भविष्यं यद्भवत्येव नास्ति तस्य निवर्तकः ॥ प्रारब्धाधीनमेवात्र प्रारब्धस्स शिवः स्मृतः ॥ ९ ॥
bhaviSyaM yadbhavatyeva nAsti tasya nivartakaH ॥ prArabdhAdhInamevAtra prArabdhassa zivaH smRtaH ॥ 9 ॥
What is destined to happen will happen. There is nothing to prevent it. Everything is determined by our own previous action and Śiva is the dispenser of the result.

कृपालुश्शंकरश्चात्र पार्थिवे वर्तते ध्रुवम् ॥ मदर्थं न करोतीह कुतः कोयं च राक्षसः ॥ १० ॥
kRpAluzzaMkarazcAtra pArthive vartate dhruvam ॥ madarthaM na karotIha kutaH koyaM ca rAkSasaH ॥ 10 ॥
The merciful lord is certainly present in this earthen idol. He is carrying out my task. Who is this Rākṣasa? Whence has he come?

स्वानुरूपां प्रतिज्ञां स सत्यं चैव करिष्यति ॥ सत्यप्रतिज्ञो भगवाञ्छिवश्चेति श्रुतौ श्रुतः ॥ ११ ॥
svAnurUpAM pratijJAM sa satyaM caiva kariSyati ॥ satyapratijJo bhagavAJchivazceti zrutau zrutaH ॥ 11 ॥
Lord Śiva is reputed in the Vedas as true to his promise. He carries out his promises in the interest of his devotees.

मम भक्तं यदा कश्चित्पीडयत्यतिदारुणः ॥ तदाहं तस्य रक्षार्थं दुष्टं हन्मि न संशयः ॥ १२ ॥
mama bhaktaM yadA kazcitpIDayatyatidAruNaH ॥ tadAhaM tasya rakSArthaM duSTaM hanmi na saMzayaH ॥ 12 ॥
The promise is “If and when any terrible person harasses my devotee I shall kill that wicked person in order to save him. There is no doubt in this.”

एवं धैर्य्यं समालंब्य ध्यात्वा देवं च शंकरम् ॥ प्रार्थयामास सद्भक्त्या मनसैव रसेश्वरः ॥ १३ ॥
evaM dhairyyaM samAlaMbya dhyAtvA devaM ca zaMkaram ॥ prArthayAmAsa sadbhaktyA manasaiva rasezvaraH ॥ 13 ॥
Thus emboldened and meditating on lord Śiva the king reminded him of the promise, mentally and devotedly.

त्वदीयोऽस्मि महाराज यथेच्छसि तथा कुरु ॥ सत्यं च वचनं ह्यत्र ब्रवीमि कुरु मे हितम् ॥ १४ ॥
tvadIyo'smi mahArAja yathecchasi tathA kuru ॥ satyaM ca vacanaM hyatra bravImi kuru me hitam ॥ 14 ॥
“O lord, I am yours. Do as you wish. I will tell him the truth. Do what is beneficial to me,”

एवं मनसि स ध्यात्वा सत्यपाशेन मंत्रितः ॥ प्राह सत्यं वचो राजा राक्षसं चावमानयन् ॥ १५ ॥
evaM manasi sa dhyAtvA satyapAzena maMtritaH ॥ prAha satyaM vaco rAjA rAkSasaM cAvamAnayan ॥ 15 ॥
Thus meditating in his mind, the king bound by the noose of truth spoke the truth slighting the Rākṣasa.

नृप उवाच ॥ भजामि शंकरं देवं स्वभक्तपरिपालकम् ॥ चराचराणां सर्वेषामीश्वरं निर्विकारकम् ॥ १६ ॥
nRpa uvAca ॥ bhajAmi zaMkaraM devaM svabhaktaparipAlakam ॥ carAcarANAM sarveSAmIzvaraM nirvikArakam ॥ 16 ॥
The king said:— I am worshipping lord Śiva who protects his devotees, who is the lord of all beings—mobile or immobile and who is free from aberrations.

सूत उवाच ॥ इति तस्य वचः श्रुत्वा कामरूपेश्वरस्य सः ॥ क्रोधेन प्रचलद्गात्रो भीमो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ १७ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ iti tasya vacaH zrutvA kAmarUpezvarasya saH ॥ krodhena pracaladgAtro bhImo vacanamabravIt ॥ 17 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing these words of the king of Kāmarūpa, Bhīma spoke thunderingly, his body shaking with rage.

॥ भीम उवाच ॥ शंकरस्ते मया ज्ञातः किं करिष्यति वै मम ॥ यो मे पितृव्यकेनैव स्थापितः किंकरो यथा ॥ १८ ॥
॥ bhIma uvAca ॥ zaMkaraste mayA jJAtaH kiM kariSyati vai mama ॥ yo me pitRvyakenaiva sthApitaH kiMkaro yathA ॥ 18 ॥
Bhīma said:— Your Śiva is known to me? What harm can he do to me? He was kept as a servant by my uncle.

तद्बलं हि समाश्रित्य विजेतुं त्वं समीहसे ॥ तर्हि त्वया जितं सर्वं नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ १९ ॥
tadbalaM hi samAzritya vijetuM tvaM samIhase ॥ tarhi tvayA jitaM sarvaM nAtra kAryA vicAraNA ॥ 19 ॥
You wish to conquer me depending on his strength. Then you have conquered everything, indeed. No need for any hesitation.

यावन्मया न दृष्टो हि शंकरस्त्वत्प्रपालकः ॥ तावत्त्वं स्वामिनं मत्वा सेवसे नान्यथा क्वचित् ॥ २० ॥
yAvanmayA na dRSTo hi zaMkarastvatprapAlakaH ॥ tAvattvaM svAminaM matvA sevase nAnyathA kvacit ॥ 20 ॥
As long as Śiva your protector is not seen by me you can serve him as your lord and not otherwise.

मया दृष्टे च तत्सर्वं स्फुटं स्यात्सर्वथा नृप ॥ तस्मात्त्वं वै शिवस्येदं रूपं दूरतरं कुरु ॥ २१ ॥
mayA dRSTe ca tatsarvaM sphuTaM syAtsarvathA nRpa ॥ tasmAttvaM vai zivasyedaM rUpaM dUrataraM kuru ॥ 21 ॥
If he is seen by me, O king, everything will be clear in every respect. Hence you remove all these idols of Śiva.

अन्यथा हि भयं तेऽद्य भविष्यति न संशयः ॥ स्वामिनस्ते करं तीक्ष्णं दास्येऽहं भीमविक्रमः ॥ २२ ॥
anyathA hi bhayaM te'dya bhaviSyati na saMzayaH ॥ svAminaste karaM tIkSNaM dAsye'haM bhImavikramaH ॥ 22 ॥
Otherwise great terror will befall you. There is no doubt about it. I am of terrible exploit and I shall lay my hands heavily on your lord.

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा कामरूपेश्वरो नृपः ॥ दृढं शंकरविश्वासो द्रुतं वाक्यमुवाच तम् ॥ २३॥
॥ sUta uvAca ॥ iti tadvacanaM zrutvA kAmarUpezvaro nRpaH ॥ dRDhaM zaMkaravizvAso drutaM vAkyamuvAca tam ॥ 23॥
Sūta said:— On hearing his words, the king of Kāmarūpa who had steady faith in Śiva immediately spoke to the Rākṣasa.

राजोवाच ॥ अहं च पामरो दुष्टो न मोक्ष्ये शंकरं पुनः ॥ सर्वोत्कृष्टश्च मे स्वामी न मां मुंचति कर्हिचित् ॥ २४॥
rAjovAca ॥ ahaM ca pAmaro duSTo na mokSye zaMkaraM punaH ॥ sarvotkRSTazca me svAmI na mAM muMcati karhicit ॥ 24॥
The king said:— I am a wicked ignorant brute in your eyes but I shall never forsake Śiva. My lord who is the most excellent of all will never forsake me.

सूत उवाच ॥ एवं वचस्तदा श्रुत्वा तस्य राज्ञश्शिवात्मनः ॥ तं प्रहस्य द्रुतं भीमो भूपतिं राक्षसोऽब्रवीत् ॥ २५ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ evaM vacastadA zrutvA tasya rAjJazzivAtmanaH ॥ taM prahasya drutaM bhImo bhUpatiM rAkSaso'bravIt ॥ 25 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing the words of the king with his soul dedicated to Śiva, the Rākṣasa laughed and spoke to the king immediately.

॥ भीम उवाच ॥ मत्तो भिक्षयते नित्यं स किं जानाति स्वाकृतिम् ॥ योगिनां का च निष्ठा वै भक्तानां प्रतिपालने ॥ २६॥
॥ bhIma uvAca ॥ matto bhikSayate nityaM sa kiM jAnAti svAkRtim ॥ yoginAM kA ca niSThA vai bhaktAnAM pratipAlane ॥ 26॥
Bhima said. He always begs from me what does he know about his own nature What is the fidelity of the yogis in protecting their devotees?

इति कृत्वा मतिं त्वं च दूरतो भव सर्वथा॥ अहं च तव स स्वामी युद्धं वै करवावहे ॥ २७ ॥
iti kRtvA matiM tvaM ca dUrato bhava sarvathA॥ ahaM ca tava sa svAmI yuddhaM vai karavAvahe ॥ 27 ॥
Having thus made up your mind stay away by all means I and your master are going to fight.

सूत उवाच ॥ इत्युक्तस्य नृपश्रेष्ठश्शंभुभक्तो दृढव्रतः ॥ प्रत्युवाचाभयो भीमं दुःखदं जगतां सदा ॥ २८ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ ityuktasya nRpazreSThazzaMbhubhakto dRDhavrataH ॥ pratyuvAcAbhayo bhImaM duHkhadaM jagatAM sadA ॥ 28 ॥
Sūta said:— Thus ridiculed, the excellent king, a devotee of Śiva, steadfast in his rites, spoke fearlessly to Bhīma who caused misery to the people.

राजोवाच ॥ शृणु राक्षस दुष्टात्मन्मया कर्तुं न शक्यते ॥ त्वया विक्रियते तर्हि कुतस्त्वं शक्तिमानसि ॥ २९ ॥
rAjovAca ॥ zRNu rAkSasa duSTAtmanmayA kartuM na zakyate ॥ tvayA vikriyate tarhi kutastvaM zaktimAnasi ॥ 29 ॥
The king said:— O wicked Rākṣasa, listen. I shall not comply with your threats. If you go astray wherefore are you powerful?

सूत उवाच ॥ इत्युक्तस्सैन्यमादाय राजानं परिभर्त्स्य तम् ॥ करालं करवालं च पार्थिवे प्राक्षिपत्तदा ॥ ३० ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ ityuktassainyamAdAya rAjAnaM paribhartsya tam ॥ karAlaM karavAlaM ca pArthive prAkSipattadA ॥ 30 ॥
The Sūta said:— Thus addressed by the king, the demon rebuked him and hurled his terrible sword at the earthen idol.

पश्य त्वं स्वामिनोऽद्यैव बलं भक्तसुखावहम् ॥ इत्युवाच विहस्यैव राक्षसैस्स महाबलः ॥ ३१ ॥
pazya tvaM svAmino'dyaiva balaM bhaktasukhAvaham ॥ ityuvAca vihasyaiva rAkSasaissa mahAbalaH ॥ 31 ॥
“See now itself your lord’s strength pleasing to the devotees.” Saying this, the powerful demon laughed in the company of the Rākṣasas.

करवालः पार्थिवं च यावत्स्पृशति नो द्विजाः ॥ यावच्च पार्थिवात्तस्मादाविरासीत्स्वयं हरः ॥ ३२ ॥
karavAlaH pArthivaM ca yAvatspRzati no dvijAH ॥ yAvacca pArthivAttasmAdAvirAsItsvayaM haraH ॥ 32 ॥
O brahmins, no sooner did the sword touch the earthen idol than Śiva manifested himself from the earthen idol.

पश्य भीमेश्वरोहं च रक्षार्थं प्रकटोऽभवम् ॥ मम पूर्वव्रतं ह्येतद्रक्ष्यो भक्तो मया सदा ॥ ३३ ॥
pazya bhImezvarohaM ca rakSArthaM prakaTo'bhavam ॥ mama pUrvavrataM hyetadrakSyo bhakto mayA sadA ॥ 33 ॥
“See, I am Bhīmeśvara. I have revealed myself to protect my devotee. This is my old rite that the devotee should be protected by me always.

एतस्मात्पश्य मे शीघ्रं बलं भक्तसुखावहम् ॥ इत्युक्त्वा स पिनाकेन करवालो द्विधा कृतः ॥ ३४ ॥
etasmAtpazya me zIghraM balaM bhaktasukhAvaham ॥ ityuktvA sa pinAkena karavAlo dvidhA kRtaH ॥ 34 ॥
From this alone see soon my strength that is pleasing to the devotees.” After saying this he split the sword into two with his Pināka.

पुनश्चैव त्रिशूलं स्वं चिक्षिपे तेन रक्षसा ॥ तच्छूलं शतधा नीतमपि दुष्टस्य शंभुना ॥ ३५ ॥
punazcaiva trizUlaM svaM cikSipe tena rakSasA ॥ tacchUlaM zatadhA nItamapi duSTasya zaMbhunA ॥ 35 ॥
His spear was then hurled by the Rākṣasa. That spear too of the wicked Rākṣasa was split into a hundred pieces by Śiva.

पुनश्शक्तिश्च निःक्षिप्ता तेन शंभूपरि द्विजाः ॥ शंभुना सापि बाणैस्स्वैर्लक्षधा च कृता द्रुतम् ॥ ३६ ॥
punazzaktizca niHkSiptA tena zaMbhUpari dvijAH ॥ zaMbhunA sApi bANaissvairlakSadhA ca kRtA drutam ॥ 36 ॥
O brahmins, then a lance was hurled at Śiva by him. It too was split into a hundred-thousand pieces with his arrows by Śiva.

पट्टिशश्च ततस्तेन निःक्षिप्तो हि शिवोपरि ॥ शिवेन स त्रिशूलेन तिलशश्च कृतं क्षणात् ॥ ३७॥
paTTizazca tatastena niHkSipto hi zivopari ॥ zivena sa trizUlena tilazazca kRtaM kSaNAt ॥ 37॥
Then a huge iron club was hurled at Śiva by him. Within a trice, it too was reduced to small pieces like gingelly seeds by Śiva with his trident.

ततश्शिवगणानां च राक्षसानां परस्परम् ॥ युद्धमासीत्तदा घोरं पश्यतां दुःखकावहम् ॥ ३८॥
tatazzivagaNAnAM ca rAkSasAnAM parasparam ॥ yuddhamAsIttadA ghoraM pazyatAM duHkhakAvaham ॥ 38॥
Then a terrible fight ensued between the attendants of Śiva and the Rākṣasa. It frightened all the onlookers with distress.

ततश्च पृथिवी सर्वा व्याकुला चाभवत्क्षणात् ॥ समुद्राश्च तदा सर्वे चुक्षुभुस्समहीधराः ॥ ३९ ॥
tatazca pRthivI sarvA vyAkulA cAbhavatkSaNAt ॥ samudrAzca tadA sarve cukSubhussamahIdharAH ॥ 39 ॥
Within a trice, the entire earth became agitated. The oceans and the mountains became excited.

देवाश्च ऋषयस्सर्वे बभूवुर्विकला अति ॥ ऊचुः परस्परं चेति व्यर्थं वै प्रार्थितश्शिवः ॥ ४० ॥
devAzca RSayassarve babhUvurvikalA ati ॥ UcuH parasparaM ceti vyarthaM vai prArthitazzivaH ॥ 40 ॥
The god and the sages were much distressed. They said to one another. “In vain did we beseech Śiva.”

Nārada came there and requested Śiva, the destroyer of miseries with palms joined in reverence and head bent down.

nArada uvAca ॥ kSamyatAM kSamyatAM nAtha tvayA vibhramakAraka ॥ tRNekazca kuThAro vai hanyatAM zIghrameva hi ॥ 42 ॥
Nārada said:— O lord, forgive, O cause of fierce agitation. Why shall a dagger be thrust to cut a blade of grass, Let the demon be killed soon.

इति संप्रार्थितश्शंभुः सर्वान्रक्षोगणान्प्रभुः ॥ हुंकारेणैव चास्त्रेण भस्मसात्कृतवांस्तदा ॥ ४३ ॥
iti saMprArthitazzaMbhuH sarvAnrakSogaNAnprabhuH ॥ huMkAreNaiva cAstreNa bhasmasAtkRtavAMstadA ॥ 43 ॥
Thus requested, lord Śiva reduced the Rākṣasa to ashes with only a Huṃ sound for hīs weapon.

sarve te rAkSasA dagdhAH zaMkareNa kSaNaM mune ॥ babhUvustatra sarveSAM devAnAM pazyatAdbhutam॥ 44॥
Even as all the gods were watching, O sage, the Rākṣasas were burnt down by Śiva in a trice.

दावानलगतो वह्निर्यथा च वनमादहेत् ॥ तथा शिवेन क्रुद्धेन राक्षसानां बलं क्षणात्॥ ४५॥
dAvAnalagato vahniryathA ca vanamAdahet ॥ tathA zivena kruddhena rAkSasAnAM balaM kSaNAt॥ 45॥
Just as the conflagration consumes the forest so did the fury of Śiva destroy the army of the Rākṣasas in a trice.

भीमस्यैव च किं भस्म न ज्ञातं केनचित्तदा ॥ परिवारयुतो दग्धो नाम न श्रूयते क्वचित् ॥ ४६ ॥
bhImasyaiva ca kiM bhasma na jJAtaM kenacittadA ॥ parivArayuto dagdho nAma na zrUyate kvacit ॥ 46 ॥
None could see even the ashes of Bhīma. He was burnt down along with his followers. There was no trace of him to be seen.

tatazzivasya kRpayA zAMtiM prAptA munIzvarAH ॥ devAssarve ca zakrAdyAssvAsthyaM prApAkhilaM jagat ॥ 47॥
The flame of the fury of Śiva spread from forest to forest. The ashes of the Rākṣasas spread everywhere in the forest.

क्रोधज्वाला महेशस्य निस्ससार वनाद्वनम् ॥ राक्षसानां च तद्भस्म सर्वं व्याप्तं वनेऽखिलम् ॥ ४८ ॥
krodhajvAlA mahezasya nissasAra vanAdvanam ॥ rAkSasAnAM ca tadbhasma sarvaM vyAptaM vane'khilam ॥ 48 ॥
The fiery flame of the anger of the great lord Śiva came out and spread from forest to forest. The ashes of the Rākṣasas spread throughout the forest.

ततश्चौषधयो जाता नानाकार्यकरास्तथा ॥ रूपान्तरं ततो नॄणां भवेद्वेषांतरं तथा ॥ ४९॥
tatazcauSadhayo jAtA nAnAkAryakarAstathA ॥ rUpAntaraM tato nRRNAM bhavedveSAMtaraM tathA ॥ 49॥
From the ashes different herbs cropped up effectively in various ways. Men could assume different forms and features through the ashes.

भूतप्रेतपिशाचादि दूरतश्च ततो व्रजेत् ॥ तन्न कार्यं च यच्चैव ततो न भवति द्विजाः ॥ ५० ॥
bhUtapretapizAcAdi dUratazca tato vrajet ॥ tanna kAryaM ca yaccaiva tato na bhavati dvijAH ॥ 50 ॥
Evil spirits, ghosts are removed far by the ashes O brahmins, there is no task which cannot be carried out through it.

Then Śiva was implored by the gods and sages “O lord, you should stay here itself for the happiness of the people.

ayaM vai kutsito deza ayodhyAlokaduHkhadaH ॥ bhavaMtaM ca tadA dRSTvA kalyANaM saMbhaviSyati ॥ 52 ॥
This despicable land causing distress to the people of Ayodhyā will yield welfare to the people at your very sight.

भीमशंकरनामा त्वं भविता सर्वसाधकः ॥ एतल्लिंगं सदा पूज्यं सर्वापद्विनिवारकम् ॥ ५३ ॥
bhImazaMkaranAmA tvaM bhavitA sarvasAdhakaH ॥ etalliMgaM sadA pUjyaM sarvApadvinivArakam ॥ 53 ॥
You will be known as Bhīmaśaṅkara—a phallic image which shall be worshipped always. It will avert mishaps and be conducive to the attainment of all desires.

sUta uvAca॥ ityevaM prArthitazzambhurlokAnAM hitakArakaH ॥ tatraivAsthitavAnprItyA svatantro bhaktavatsalaH ॥ 54॥
Sūta said:— Thus requested, Śiva the benefactor of the worlds, the lord favourably disposed towards his devotees remained there itself.
