sUta uvAca॥ naranArAyaNAkhyau yAvavatArau harerdvijAH ॥ tepAte bhArate khaNDe badaryAzrama eva hi॥ 1॥
Sūta said:— O brahmins, the incarnations of Viṣṇu—Nara and Nārāyaṇa performed their penance in the Bhārata Khaṇḍa in the hermitage of Badarikāśrama.

ताभ्यां संप्रार्थितश्शंभुः पार्थिवे पूजनाय वै ॥ आयाति नित्यं तल्लिंगे भक्ताधीनतया शिव ॥ २॥
tAbhyAM saMprArthitazzaMbhuH pArthive pUjanAya vai ॥ AyAti nityaM talliMge bhaktAdhInatayA ziva ॥ 2॥
Requested by them for their worship, Śiva, being subservient to the devotees comes every day to that earthen phallic image of Śiva.

एवं पूजयतोश्शंभुं तयोर्विष्ण्ववतारयोः ॥ चिरकालो व्यतीताय शैवयोर्धर्मपुत्रयोः ॥ ३ ॥
evaM pUjayatozzaMbhuM tayorviSNvavatArayoH ॥ cirakAlo vyatItAya zaivayordharmaputrayoH ॥ 3 ॥
A long time elapsed while these two incarnations of Viṣṇu, the spiritual sons of Śiva, performed the worship of Śiva.

एकस्मिन्समये तत्र प्रसन्नः परमेश्वरः ॥ प्रत्युवाच प्रसन्नोस्मि वरो मे व्रियतामिति॥ ४॥
ekasminsamaye tatra prasannaH paramezvaraH ॥ pratyuvAca prasannosmi varo me vriyatAmiti॥ 4॥
On one occasion the delighted Śiva told them—“I am delighted. Choose your boon from me.”

ityukte ca tadA tena naro nArAyaNassvayam॥ UcaturvacanaM tatra lokAnAM hitakAmyayA ॥ 5 ॥
When he said this, Nara and Nārāyaṇa spoke these words keeping in mind the welfare of the world.

नरनारायणावूचतुः ॥ यदि प्रसन्नो देवेश यदि देयो वरस्त्वया ॥ स्थीयतां स्वेन रूपेण पूजार्थं शंकरस्स्वयम् ॥ ६ ॥
naranArAyaNAvUcatuH ॥ yadi prasanno deveza yadi deyo varastvayA ॥ sthIyatAM svena rUpeNa pUjArthaM zaMkarassvayam ॥ 6 ॥
Nara and Nārāyaṇa said:— O lord of gods, if you are delighted, if the boon is to be granted by you, O Śiva, stay here in your own form and accept the devotion of your devotees.

सूत उवाच ॥ इत्युक्तस्तु तदा ताभ्यां केदारे हिमसंश्रये ॥ स्वयं च शंकरस्तस्थौ ज्योतीरूपो महेश्वरः ॥ ७॥
sUta uvAca ॥ ityuktastu tadA tAbhyAM kedAre himasaMzraye ॥ svayaM ca zaMkarastasthau jyotIrUpo mahezvaraH ॥ 7॥
Sūta said:— Thus requested, lord Śiva himself stayed in Kedāra on the Himavat in the form of Jyotirliṅga.

ताभ्यां च पूजितश्चैव सर्वदुःखभयापहः ॥ लोकानामुपकारार्थं भक्तानां दर्शनाय वै ॥ ८॥
tAbhyAM ca pUjitazcaiva sarvaduHkhabhayApahaH ॥ lokAnAmupakArArthaM bhaktAnAM darzanAya vai ॥ 8॥
He was worshipped by them for helping the worlds and for appearing in the presence of the devotees. He destroys their miseries and terrors.

स्वयं स्थितस्तदा शंभुः केदारेश्वरसंज्ञकः ॥ भक्ताभीष्टप्रदो नित्यं दर्शनादर्चनादपि ॥ ९॥
svayaM sthitastadA zaMbhuH kedArezvarasaMjJakaH ॥ bhaktAbhISTaprado nityaM darzanAdarcanAdapi ॥ 9॥
Then Śiva himself stayed there in the name of Kedāreśvara. By his sight and worship he bestows the desires of the devotees.

देवाश्च पूजयंतीह ऋषयश्च पुरातनाः॥ मनोभीष्ट फलं तेते सुप्रसन्नान्महेश्वरात् ॥ १० ॥
devAzca pUjayaMtIha RSayazca purAtanAH॥ manobhISTa phalaM tete suprasannAnmahezvarAt ॥ 10 ॥
The gods and the sages of yore worship here. They get the fruit of their desire from the delighted lord Śiva.

भवस्य पूजनान्नित्यं बदर्याश्रमवासिनः॥ प्राप्नुवन्ति यतः सोऽसौ भक्ताभीष्टप्रदः सदा ॥ ११॥
bhavasya pUjanAnnityaM badaryAzramavAsinaH॥ prApnuvanti yataH so'sau bhaktAbhISTapradaH sadA ॥ 11॥
Since the residents of Badarikāśrama derive their desires every day by worshipping him, he is called the bestower of the desires of his devotees ever.

तद्दिनं हि समारभ्य केदारेश्वर एव च ॥ पूजितो येन भक्त्या वै दुःखं स्वप्नेऽति दुर्लभम् ॥ १२॥
taddinaM hi samArabhya kedArezvara eva ca ॥ pUjito yena bhaktyA vai duHkhaM svapne'ti durlabham ॥ 12॥
From that day onwards, if anyone worships Kedāreśvara with devotion he will not suffer distress even in dreams.

यो वै हि पाण्डवान्दृष्ट्वा माहिषं रूपमास्थितः ॥ मायामास्थाय तत्रैव पलायनपरोऽभवत् ॥ १३ ॥
yo vai hi pANDavAndRSTvA mAhiSaM rUpamAsthitaH ॥ mAyAmAsthAya tatraiva palAyanaparo'bhavat ॥ 13 ॥
It was he who on seeing Pāṇḍavas assumed the form of a buffalo, having recourse to his magical skill and began to run away.

धृतश्च पाण्डवैस्तत्र ह्यवाङ्मुखतया स्थितः ॥ पुच्छ चैव धृतं तैस्तु प्रार्थितश्च पुनःपुनः ॥ १४ ॥
dhRtazca pANDavaistatra hyavAGmukhatayA sthitaH ॥ puccha caiva dhRtaM taistu prArthitazca punaHpunaH ॥ 14 ॥
When he was caught by the Pāṇḍavas he stood with his face bent down. They held his tail and implored him again and again.

तद्रूपेण स्थितस्तत्र भक्तवत्सलनामभाक् ॥ नयपाले शिरोभागो गतस्तद्रूपतः स्थितः ॥ १५ ॥
tadrUpeNa sthitastatra bhaktavatsalanAmabhAk ॥ nayapAle zirobhAgo gatastadrUpataH sthitaH ॥ 15 ॥
He remained in that form in the name of Bhaktavatsala. His head portion went and remained fixed in the city of Nayapāla. The lord stood in that form there.

स वै व पूजनान्नित्यमाज्ञां चैवाप्यदात्तथा ॥ पूजितश्च स्वयं शंभुस्तत्र तस्थौ वरानदात् ॥ १६ ॥
sa vai va pUjanAnnityamAjJAM caivApyadAttathA ॥ pUjitazca svayaM zaMbhustatra tasthau varAnadAt ॥ 16 ॥
He asked them to worship him in that trunkless form. Worshipped by them, Śiva remained there and granted boons.

पूजयित्वा गतास्ते तु पाण्डवा मुदितास्तदा ॥ लब्ध्वा चित्तेप्सितं सर्वं विमुक्तास्सर्वदुःखतः ॥ १७ ॥
pUjayitvA gatAste tu pANDavA muditAstadA ॥ labdhvA cittepsitaM sarvaM vimuktAssarvaduHkhataH ॥ 17 ॥
The Pāṇḍavas went away with joy after worshipping him. After obtaining what they desired in their minds, they were rid of all their miseries.

तत्र नित्यं हस्साक्षात्क्षेत्रे केदारसंज्ञके ॥ भारतीभिः प्रजाभिश्च तथैव परिपूज्यते ॥ १८ ॥
tatra nityaM hassAkSAtkSetre kedArasaMjJake ॥ bhAratIbhiH prajAbhizca tathaiva paripUjyate ॥ 18 ॥
There in the shrine of Kedāra, Śiva is directly worshipped by the Indian people.

तत्रत्यं वलयं यो वै ददाति हरवल्लभः ॥ हररूपांतिकं तच्च हररूपसमन्वितम् ॥ १९ ॥
tatratyaM valayaM yo vai dadAti haravallabhaH ॥ hararUpAMtikaM tacca hararUpasamanvitam ॥ 19 ॥
The one who gives the ring there is the one who is dear to Lord Śiva. That is the end of the form of Lord Hari and is associated with the form of Lord Hari.

तथैव रूपं दृष्ट्वा च सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ॥ जीवन्मुक्तो भवेत्सोपि यो गतो बदरीवने ॥ २० ॥
tathaiva rUpaM dRSTvA ca sarvapApaiH pramucyate ॥ jIvanmukto bhavetsopi yo gato badarIvane ॥ 20 ॥
Seeing the same form one is freed from all sins Even he who has gone to the Badari forest will be liberated alive.

दृष्ट्वा रूपं नरस्यैव तथा नारायणस्य हि ॥ केदारेश्वरशंभोश्च मुक्तभागी न संशयः ॥ २१ ॥
dRSTvA rUpaM narasyaiva tathA nArAyaNasya hi ॥ kedArezvarazaMbhozca muktabhAgI na saMzayaH ॥ 21 ॥
On seeing the forms of Nara, Nārāyaṇa and Kedāreśvara, undoubtedly he can achieve liberation.

केदारेशस्य भक्ता ये मार्गस्थास्तस्य वै मृता॥ गतेऽपि मुक्ता भवंत्येव नात्र कार्य्या विचारणा ॥ २२॥
kedArezasya bhaktA ye mArgasthAstasya vai mRtA॥ gate'pi muktA bhavaMtyeva nAtra kAryyA vicAraNA ॥ 22॥
The devotees of Kedāreśa who die on the way are released from rebirth. No doubt need be entertained in this respect.

गत्वा तत्र प्रीतियुक्तः केदारेशं प्रपूज्य च ॥ तत्रत्यमुदकं पीत्वा पुनर्जन्म न विन्दति ॥ २३॥
gatvA tatra prItiyuktaH kedArezaM prapUjya ca ॥ tatratyamudakaM pItvA punarjanma na vindati ॥ 23॥
Going there, with pleasure, worshipping Kedāreśa and drinking the water there a person is released from re-birth.

खण्डेस्मिन्भारते विप्रा नरनारायणेश्वरः ॥ केदारेशः प्रपूज्यश्च सर्वैर्जीवैस्सुभक्तितः ॥ २४॥
khaNDesminbhArate viprA naranArAyaNezvaraH ॥ kedArezaH prapUjyazca sarvairjIvaissubhaktitaH ॥ 24॥
O brahmins, in this Bhārata country people should worship with devotion Nara-Nārayaṇeśvara (Nara-Nārāyaṇeśvara?) and Kedāreśa.

अस्य खण्डस्य स स्वामी सर्वेशोपि विशेषतः ॥ सर्वकामप्रदश्शंभुः केदाराख्यो न संशय ॥ २५ ॥
asya khaNDasya sa svAmI sarvezopi vizeSataH ॥ sarvakAmapradazzaMbhuH kedArAkhyo na saMzaya ॥ 25 ॥
Although he is the lord of the universe still he is particularly the lord of Bharata. There is no doubt that Śiva Kedāra is the bestower of all desires.

एतद्वचस्समाख्यातं यत्पृष्टमृषिसत्तमाः ॥ श्रुत्वा पापं हरेत्सर्वं नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥ २६॥
etadvacassamAkhyAtaM yatpRSTamRSisattamAH ॥ zrutvA pApaM haretsarvaM nAtra kAryA vicAraNA ॥ 26॥
O excellent sages, I have narrated to you what you have asked for. On hearing this narrative the sins disappear at once. No doubt need be entertained in this regard.
