ऋषय ऊचुः ॥। ज्योतिषां चैव लिंगानां माहात्म्यं कथयाधुना ॥ उत्पत्तिं च तथा तेषां ब्रूहि सर्वं यथाश्रुतम् ॥ १ ॥
RSaya UcuH ॥। jyotiSAM caiva liMgAnAM mAhAtmyaM kathayAdhunA ॥ utpattiM ca tathA teSAM brUhi sarvaM yathAzrutam ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:— Please narrate the greatness of the Jyotirliṅgas. Please mention their origin and everything else in the manner you have heard.

सूत उवाच ॥ शृण्वन्तु विप्रा वक्ष्यामि तन्माहात्म्यं जनिं तथा ॥ संक्षेपतो यथाबुद्धि सद्गुरोश्च मया श्रुतम् ॥ २ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ zRNvantu viprA vakSyAmi tanmAhAtmyaM janiM tathA ॥ saMkSepato yathAbuddhi sadgurozca mayA zrutam ॥ 2 ॥
Sūta said:— O brahmins, please listen, I shall narrate its greatness and origin succinctly in the manner I have heard from my good preceptor, to the extent of my intellect.

एतेषां चैव माहात्म्यं वक्तुं वर्षशतैरपि ॥ शक्यते न मुनिश्रेष्ठास्तथापि कथयामि वः ॥ ३ ॥
eteSAM caiva mAhAtmyaM vaktuM varSazatairapi ॥ zakyate na munizreSThAstathApi kathayAmi vaH ॥ 3 ॥
The first among them is glorified as Somanātha. O sage, at the outset, listen to its greatness with attention.

सोमनाथश्च तेषां वै प्रथमः परिकीर्तितः ॥ तन्माहात्म्यं शृणु मुने प्रथमं सावधानतः ॥ ४ ॥
somanAthazca teSAM vai prathamaH parikIrtitaH ॥ tanmAhAtmyaM zRNu mune prathamaM sAvadhAnataH ॥ 4 ॥
O great sages, the greatness of Jyotirliṅgas cannot be adequately described even in hundreds of years. Still I shall tell you.

सप्तविंशन्मिताः कन्या दक्षेण च महात्मना ॥ तेन चन्द्रमसे दत्ता अश्विन्याद्या मुनीश्वराः ॥ ५॥
saptaviMzanmitAH kanyA dakSeNa ca mahAtmanA ॥ tena candramase dattA azvinyAdyA munIzvarAH ॥ 5॥
O great sages, his daughters, twenty-seven in number, Aśvinī and others, were given in marriage to the moon by Dakṣa, the great soul.

चन्द्रं च स्वामिनं प्राप्य शोभमाना विशेषतः ॥ चन्द्रोऽपि चैव ताः प्राप्य शोभते स्म निरन्तरम् ॥ ६ ॥
candraM ca svAminaM prApya zobhamAnA vizeSataH ॥ candro'pi caiva tAH prApya zobhate sma nirantaram ॥ 6 ॥
On securing the moon as their lord, those daughters shone extraordinarily. The moon too, on securing them shone incessantly.

हेम्ना चैव मणिर्भाति मणिना हेम चैव हि ॥ एवं च समये तस्य यज्जातं श्रूयतामिति ॥ ७ ॥
hemnA caiva maNirbhAti maNinA hema caiva hi ॥ evaM ca samaye tasya yajjAtaM zrUyatAmiti ॥ 7 ॥
The jewel shines with gold and the gold shines with the jewel. Now listen to what happened in due course.

सर्वास्वपि च पत्नीषु रोहिणीनाम या स्मृता ॥ यथैका सा प्रिया चासीत्तथान्या न कदाचन ॥ ८ ॥
sarvAsvapi ca patnISu rohiNInAma yA smRtA ॥ yathaikA sA priyA cAsIttathAnyA na kadAcana ॥ 8 ॥
Out of his twenty-seven wives he did not love any one so much at anytime as he loved Rohiṇī.

अन्याश्च दुःखमापन्नाः पितरं शरणं ययुः ॥ गत्वा तस्मै च यद्दुःखं तथा ताभिर्निवेदितम् ॥ ९ ॥
anyAzca duHkhamApannAH pitaraM zaraNaM yayuH ॥ gatvA tasmai ca yadduHkhaM tathA tAbhirniveditam ॥ 9 ॥
The others became distressed and sought refuge in their father. After going to him they mentioned their misery to him.

दक्षस्स च तथा श्रुत्वा दुःखं च प्राप्तावांस्तदा ॥ समागत्य द्विजाश्चन्द्रं शान्त्यावोचद्वचस्तदा ॥ १० ॥
dakSassa ca tathA zrutvA duHkhaM ca prAptAvAMstadA ॥ samAgatya dvijAzcandraM zAntyAvocadvacastadA ॥ 10 ॥
On hearing it, Dakṣa too was struck with grief. O brahmins, approaching the moon he calmly spoke to him thus.

दक्ष उवाच ॥ विमले च कुले त्वं हि समुत्पन्नः कलानिधे ॥ आश्रितेषु च सर्वेषु न्यूनाधिक्यं कथं तव ॥ ११ ॥
dakSa uvAca ॥ vimale ca kule tvaM hi samutpannaH kalAnidhe ॥ AzriteSu ca sarveSu nyUnAdhikyaM kathaM tava ॥ 11 ॥
Dakṣa said:— O storehouse of digits, you are born of a noble family. How can you cherish oddity in your affection towards your dependents?

कृतं चेत्तकृतं तच्च न कर्तव्यं त्वया पुनः ॥ वर्तनं विषमत्वेन नरकप्रदमीरितम् ॥ १२ ॥
kRtaM cettakRtaM tacca na kartavyaM tvayA punaH ॥ vartanaM viSamatvena narakapradamIritam ॥ 12 ॥
If you have done so, stop with it. This is enough. You shall not repeat it. Oddity in behaviour is said to be conducive to hell.

सूत उवाच ॥ दक्षश्चैव च संप्रार्थ्य चन्द्रं जामातरं स्वयम्॥ जगाम मन्दिरं स्वं वै निश्चयं परमं गतः ॥ १३॥
sUta uvAca ॥ dakSazcaiva ca saMprArthya candraM jAmAtaraM svayam॥ jagAma mandiraM svaM vai nizcayaM paramaM gataH ॥ 13॥
Sūta said:— After requesting the moon, his son-in-law, thus, Dakṣa returned to his abode fully assured.

चंद्रोऽपि वचनं तस्य न चकार विमोहितः ॥ शिवमायाप्रभावेण यया संमोहितं जगत् ॥ १४ ॥
caMdro'pi vacanaM tasya na cakAra vimohitaH ॥ zivamAyAprabhAveNa yayA saMmohitaM jagat ॥ 14 ॥
The moon did not act according to his advice being deluded by Śiva’s Māyā which deludes the universe.

शुभं भावि यदा यस्य शुभं भवति तस्य वै ॥ अशुभं च यदा भावि कथं तस्य शुभं भवेत् ॥ १५॥
zubhaM bhAvi yadA yasya zubhaM bhavati tasya vai ॥ azubhaM ca yadA bhAvi kathaM tasya zubhaM bhavet ॥ 15॥
Welfare befalls him who is destined to have it. How can one destined to court woe have a weal?

चन्द्रोऽपि बलवद्भाविवशान्मेने न तद्वचः ॥ रोहिण्यां च समासक्तो नान्यां मेने कदाचन ॥ १६॥
candro'pi balavadbhAvivazAnmene na tadvacaH ॥ rohiNyAM ca samAsakto nAnyAM mene kadAcana ॥ 16॥
Being subjected to the force of destiny the moon did not accept his advice. Infatuated of Rohiṇī he neglected others.

तच्छ्रुत्वा पुनरागत्य स्वयं दुःखसमन्वितः ॥ प्रार्थयामास चन्द्रं स दक्षो दक्षस्सुनीतितः ॥ १७ ॥
tacchrutvA punarAgatya svayaM duHkhasamanvitaH ॥ prArthayAmAsa candraM sa dakSo dakSassunItitaH ॥ 17 ॥
On hearing it the skilful Dakṣa returned to the moon excessively distressed. He politely asked the moon to mend his ways.

दक्ष उवाच ॥ श्रूयतां चन्द्र यत्पूर्वं प्रार्थितो बहुधा मया ॥ न मानितं त्वया यस्मात्तस्मात्त्वं च क्षयी भव ॥ १८॥
dakSa uvAca ॥ zrUyatAM candra yatpUrvaM prArthito bahudhA mayA ॥ na mAnitaM tvayA yasmAttasmAttvaM ca kSayI bhava ॥ 18॥
Dakṣa said:— O moon, listen. Although requested repeatedly you did not pay heed to my entreaties. Hence, fall a prey to the wasting disease.

सूत उवाच॥ इत्युक्ते तेन चन्द्रो वै क्षयी जातः क्षणादिह ॥ हाहाकारो महानासीत्तदेन्दौ क्षीणतां गते ॥ १९ ॥
sUta uvAca॥ ityukte tena candro vai kSayI jAtaH kSaNAdiha ॥ hAhAkAro mahAnAsIttadendau kSINatAM gate ॥ 19 ॥
Sūta said:— Just as he cursed him, the moon contracted consumption within a trice. When he was wasted away there was a great hue and cry.

देवर्षयस्तदा सर्वे किं कार्य्यं हा कथं भवेत् ॥ इति दुःखं समापन्ना विह्वला ह्यभवन्मुने ॥ २० ॥
devarSayastadA sarve kiM kAryyaM hA kathaM bhavet ॥ iti duHkhaM samApannA vihvalA hyabhavanmune ॥ 20 ॥
O sage, the gods and the sages became extremely agitated and felt miserable—“What shall be done? What will happen now?”

विज्ञापिताश्च चन्द्रेण सर्वे शक्रादयस्सुराः ॥ ऋषयश्च वसिष्ठाद्या ब्रह्माणं शरणं ययु ॥ २१॥
vijJApitAzca candreNa sarve zakrAdayassurAH ॥ RSayazca vasiSThAdyA brahmANaM zaraNaM yayu ॥ 21॥
Informed and implored by the moon, Indra and other gods, Vasiṣṭha and other sages sought refuge in Brahmā.

गत्वापि तु तदा प्रोचुस्तद्वृत्तं निखिलं मुने ॥ ब्रह्मणे ऋषयो देवा नत्वा नुत्वातिविह्वलाः ॥ २२ ॥
gatvApi tu tadA procustadvRttaM nikhilaM mune ॥ brahmaNe RSayo devA natvA nutvAtivihvalAH ॥ 22 ॥
O sage, after approaching him in their great agitation they bowed to and eulogised Brahmā and mentioned everything to him.

ब्रह्मापि तद्वचः श्रुत्वा विस्मयं परमं ययौ ॥ शिवमायां सुप्रशस्य श्रावयंस्तानुवाच ह ॥ २३ ॥
brahmApi tadvacaH zrutvA vismayaM paramaM yayau ॥ zivamAyAM suprazasya zrAvayaMstAnuvAca ha ॥ 23 ॥
On hearing their words Brahmā was much surprised. Praising the Māyā of Śiva within their hearing he said.

ब्रह्मोवाच ॥ अहो कष्टं महज्जातं सर्वलोकस्य दुःखदम् ॥ चन्द्रस्तु सर्वदा दुष्टो दक्षश्च शप्तवानमुम् ॥ २४ ॥
brahmovAca ॥ aho kaSTaM mahajjAtaM sarvalokasya duHkhadam ॥ candrastu sarvadA duSTo dakSazca zaptavAnamum ॥ 24 ॥
Brahmā said:— O what a pity? This is distressing to the entire world. The moon is always wicked and defiled. Now Dakṣa has cursed him.

सर्वं दुष्टेन चन्द्रेण कृतं कर्माप्यनेकशः ॥ श्रूयतामृषयो देवाश्चन्द्रकृत्यं पुरातनम् ॥ २५॥
sarvaM duSTena candreNa kRtaM karmApyanekazaH ॥ zrUyatAmRSayo devAzcandrakRtyaM purAtanam ॥ 25॥
Many unholy deeds have been committed by the wicked moon. O sages, O gods, may the early misdeeds of the moon be heard.

बृहस्पतेर्गृहं गत्वा तारा दुष्टेन वै हृता ॥ तस्य भार्या पुनश्चैव स दैत्यान्समुपस्थितः ॥ २६॥
bRhaspatergRhaM gatvA tArA duSTena vai hRtA ॥ tasya bhAryA punazcaiva sa daityAnsamupasthitaH ॥ 26॥
The wicked fellow went to Bṛhaspati’s house and abducted his wife Tārā. He then allied himself with the Daityas.

समाश्रितस्तदा दैत्यान्युद्धं देवैश्चकार ह ॥ मयाऽत्रिणा निषिद्धश्च तस्मै तारां ददौ शशी ॥ २७ ॥
samAzritastadA daityAnyuddhaM devaizcakAra ha ॥ mayA'triNA niSiddhazca tasmai tArAM dadau zazI ॥ 27 ॥
Having sought refuge in the Daityas he fought against the god though forbidden by me and Atri. Then the moon restored Tārā to Bṛhaspati.

तां च गर्भवतीं दृष्ट्वा न गृह्णामीति सोऽब्रवीत् ॥ अस्माभिर्वारितो जीवः कृच्छ्राज्जग्राह तां तदा ॥ २८ ॥
tAM ca garbhavatIM dRSTvA na gRhNAmIti so'bravIt ॥ asmAbhirvArito jIvaH kRcchrAjjagrAha tAM tadA ॥ 28 ॥
Seeing her pregnant, Bṛhaspati refused to take her back. Induced by us he accepted her unwillingly.

यदि गर्भं जहातीह गृह्णामीत्यब्रवीत्पुनः ॥ गर्भे मया पुनस्तत्र त्याजिते मुनिसत्तमाः ॥ २९ ॥
yadi garbhaM jahAtIha gRhNAmItyabravItpunaH ॥ garbhe mayA punastatra tyAjite munisattamAH ॥ 29 ॥
If she gives up the pregnancy here I will take her again he said O great sages I was abandoned there again in the womb.

कस्यायं च पुनर्गर्भस्सोमस्येति च साऽब्रवीत् ॥ पश्चात्तेन गृहीता सा मया च वारितेन वै ॥ ३० ॥
kasyAyaM ca punargarbhassomasyeti ca sA'bravIt ॥ pazcAttena gRhItA sA mayA ca vAritena vai ॥ 30 ॥
And whose pregnancy is this again of the moon?” she asked. Later he caught her and I stopped her.

एवंविधानि चन्द्रस्य दुश्चारित्राण्यनेकशः ॥ वर्ण्यंते किं पुनस्तानि सोऽद्यापि कुरुते कथम् ॥ ३१॥
evaMvidhAni candrasya duzcAritrANyanekazaH ॥ varNyaMte kiM punastAni so'dyApi kurute katham ॥ 31॥
What avails the narration of his previous countless vicious deeds? He still continues to do similar things.

यज्जातं तत्सुसंजातं नान्यथा भवति ध्रुवम् ॥ अतः परमुपायं वो वक्ष्यामि शृणुतादरात् ॥ ३२ ॥
yajjAtaM tatsusaMjAtaM nAnyathA bhavati dhruvam ॥ ataH paramupAyaM vo vakSyAmi zRNutAdarAt ॥ 32 ॥
What has happened cannot be reversed. I shall tell you the means to be adopted now. Listen attentively.

प्रभासके शुभे क्षेत्रे व्रजेश्चन्द्रस्सदैवतैः ॥ शिवमाराधयेत्तत्र मृत्युञ्जयविधानतः ॥ ३३ ॥
prabhAsake zubhe kSetre vrajezcandrassadaivataiH ॥ zivamArAdhayettatra mRtyuJjayavidhAnataH ॥ 33 ॥
Let the moon go to the auspicious shrine at Prabhāsa along with the gods. Let him propitiate Śiva there according to Mṛtyuñjaya rites.

निधायेशं पुरस्तत्र चन्द्रस्तपतु नित्यशः ॥ प्रसन्नश्च शिवः पश्चादक्षयं तं करिष्यति ॥ ३४॥
nidhAyezaM purastatra candrastapatu nityazaH ॥ prasannazca zivaH pazcAdakSayaM taM kariSyati ॥ 34॥
Let him perform the penance incessantly sitting before the lord. The delighted Śiva will cure him from consumption afterwards.

सूत उवाच ॥ इति श्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य ब्रह्मणस्ते सुरर्षयः ॥ संनिवृत्याययुस्सर्वे यत्र दक्षविधू ततः ॥ ३५ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ iti zrutvA vacastasya brahmaNaste surarSayaH ॥ saMnivRtyAyayussarve yatra dakSavidhU tataH ॥ 35 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing the words of Brahmā, the gods and sages returned to the place where Dakṣa and the moon were present.

गृहीत्वा ते ततश्चन्द्रं दक्षं चाश्वास्य निर्जराः ॥ प्रभासे ऋषयश्चक्रुस्तत्र गत्वाखिलाश्च वै ॥ ३६ ॥
gRhItvA te tatazcandraM dakSaM cAzvAsya nirjarAH ॥ prabhAse RSayazcakrustatra gatvAkhilAzca vai ॥ 36 ॥
They then took hold of the moon and consoled Daksha and became free from old age. The sages performed the rituals at Prabhas and all the demigods went there.

आवाह्य तीर्थवर्याणि सरस्वत्यादिकानि च ॥ पार्थिवेन तदा पूजां मृत्युञ्जयविधानतः ॥ ३७॥
AvAhya tIrthavaryANi sarasvatyAdikAni ca ॥ pArthivena tadA pUjAM mRtyuJjayavidhAnataH ॥ 37॥
Invoking the best of holy places like Saraswati Then the king worshiped him in the manner prescribed for conquering death.

ते देवाश्च तदा सर्वे ऋषयो निर्मलाशयाः ॥ स्थाप्य चन्द्रं प्रभासे च स्वंस्वं धाम ययुर्मुदा ॥ ३८॥
te devAzca tadA sarve RSayo nirmalAzayAH ॥ sthApya candraM prabhAse ca svaMsvaM dhAma yayurmudA ॥ 38॥
The gods and the sages of pious mind left the moon at Prabhāsa anḍ joyously returned to their abodes.

चन्द्रेण च तपस्तप्तं पण्मासं च निरंतरम् ॥ मृत्युंजयेन मंत्रेण पूजितो वृषभध्वजः ॥ ३९॥
candreNa ca tapastaptaM paNmAsaM ca niraMtaram ॥ mRtyuMjayena maMtreNa pUjito vRSabhadhvajaH ॥ 39॥
The moon performed the penance incessantly for six months. He worshipped the bull-bannered deity with the Mṛtyuñjaya mantra.

दशकोटिमितं मन्त्रं समावृत्य शशी च तम् ॥। ध्यात्वा मृत्युञ्जयं मन्त्रं तस्थौ निश्चलमानसः ॥ ४० ॥
dazakoTimitaM mantraM samAvRtya zazI ca tam ॥। dhyAtvA mRtyuJjayaM mantraM tasthau nizcalamAnasaH ॥ 40 ॥
The moon repeated the Mṛtyuñjaya mantra a hundred million times. He meditated on the lord Mṛtyuñjaya with his mind unruffled.

तं दृष्ट्वा शंकरो देवः प्रसन्नोऽभूत्ततः प्रभुः ॥ आविर्भूय विधुं प्राह स्वभक्तं भक्तवत्सलः ॥ ४१॥
taM dRSTvA zaMkaro devaH prasanno'bhUttataH prabhuH ॥ AvirbhUya vidhuM prAha svabhaktaM bhaktavatsalaH ॥ 41॥
Lord Śiva, who is favourably disposed towards his devotees, was pleased by his devotion and manifesting himself there spoke to him thus.

Śiva said:— O moon, may there be welfare to you. Choose your boon, whatever you desire in your mind. I am pleased with you. I shall grant you an excellent boon.

The moon said:— O lord of gods, if you are delighted, what is not attainable to me? Still, O lord, let not my body decay by consumption.

Pardon my faults. Remain benevolent to me always. When he had said thus Śiva spoke to him again.

After coming there they offered benedictory blessings to the moon. They joined their palms in reverence and bowed to Śiva. They prayed to him devotionally.

Sūta said:— Then the moon eulogised the lord with good devotion first in the Nirguṇa and then in the Saguṇa form.

He was pleased with the greatness of the field of the gods There is a name for the fame of the moon, Lord Shiva.

Someshwara was also famous in the three worlds O brāhmaṇas, by worshiping him, he destroys diseases such as tuberculosis and leprosy.

Blessed indeed and contented is he in whose name Śiva the lord of the worlds, himself stayed there sanctifying the entire world.

A pond was established there itself by all the gods. That was shared by Śiva and Brahmā together.

It is famous as the moon’s pond on the earth. It is destructive of sins. The man who takes bath there gets rid of sins here.

Incurable diseases like consumption are entirely eradicated if a person takes ablutions there for six months.

A pious man attains the fruit of circumambulating the earth, if he circumambulates Prabhāsa. After death he is honoured in heaven by the gods.

On seeing this Somaliṅga a person is relieved of all sins. After enjoying the fruits as desired, he attains heaven after death.

He who makes pilgrimage to this place attains the fruits of whatever he might have had in view. There is no doubt about this.

Thus the sages and gods saw the fruit in such a way. Happily bowing to Lord Shiva he took hold of the inexhaustible moon.

They circumambulated that holy place and went away praising it The moon also performed his ancient duties.

yaH zRNoti tadutpattiM zrAvayedvA parAnnaraH ॥ sarvAnkAmAnavApnoti sarvapApaiH pramucyate ॥ 62 ॥
He who listens to this origin or narrates it to others attains all desires and becomes rid of all sins.
