sUta uvAca॥ dvijAH zRNuta sadbhaktyA zivaliMgAni tAni ca ॥ pazcimAyAM dizAyAM vai yAni khyAtAni bhUtale॥ 1॥
Sūta said:— O brahmins, listen with devotion to the phallic forms of Śiva that exist in the western quarter on this earth.

कपिलायां नगर्यां तु कालरामेश्वराभिधे ॥ शिवलिंगे महादिव्ये दर्शनात्पापहारके ॥ २ ॥
kapilAyAM nagaryAM tu kAlarAmezvarAbhidhe ॥ zivaliMge mahAdivye darzanAtpApahArake ॥ 2 ॥
In the city of Kapilā are the two divine phallic images of Śiva named Kāla and Rāmeśvara. By their very sight they dispel sins.

pazcime sAgare caiva mahAsiddhezvaraH smRtaH ॥ dharmArthakAmadazcaiva tathA mokSaprado'pi hi ॥ 3॥
Mahāsiddheśvara is on the shore of the western ocean and is famous as the bestower of virtue, wealth, love and salvation.

पश्चिमाम्बुधितीरस्थं गोकर्णं क्षेत्रमुत्तमम् ॥ ब्रह्महत्यादिपापघ्नं सर्वकामफलप्रदम् ॥ ४॥
pazcimAmbudhitIrasthaM gokarNaM kSetramuttamam ॥ brahmahatyAdipApaghnaM sarvakAmaphalapradam ॥ 4॥
Gokarṇa the excellent shrine, situated on the shore of the western ocean, destroys the sin of brahmin’s slaughter and other sins and yields the fruits of all desires.

gokarNe zivaliMgAni vidyante koTikoTizaH ॥ asaMkhyAtAni tIrthAni tiSThanti ca padepade ॥ 5॥
At Gokarṇa there are crores and crores of Śiva’s phallic images. At every step there are innumerable holy centres.

बहुनात्र किमुक्तेन गोकर्णस्थानि सर्वशः ॥ शिवप्रत्यक्षलिंगानि तीर्थान्यम्भांसि सर्वशः ॥ ६ ॥
bahunAtra kimuktena gokarNasthAni sarvazaH ॥ zivapratyakSaliMgAni tIrthAnyambhAMsi sarvazaH ॥ 6 ॥
Of what avail is much talk. Everything in Gokarṇa is Śiva’s visible phallic image. All the waters there are holy Tīrthas.

gokarNe zivaliMgAnAM tIrthAnAmapi sarvazaH ॥ varNyate mahimA tAta purANeSu maharSibhiH ॥ 7॥
O dear, the greatness of Śiva’s holy images and the Tīrthas at Gokarṇa is explained and described in the Purāṇas by great sages.

कृतेयुगे स हि श्वेतस्त्रेतायां सोतिलोहितः ॥ द्वापरे पीतवर्णश्च कलौ श्यामो भविष्यति ॥ ८ ॥
kRteyuge sa hi zvetastretAyAM sotilohitaH ॥ dvApare pItavarNazca kalau zyAmo bhaviSyati ॥ 8 ॥
In the Kṛta Yuga it is white; in the Tretā it is deep-red; in the Dvāpara it is yellow and in the Kali age it is dark in colour.

आक्रान्तसप्तपातालकुहरोपि महाबलः ॥ प्राप्ते कलियुगे घोरे मृदुतामुपयास्यति ॥ ९ ॥
AkrAntasaptapAtAlakuharopi mahAbalaH ॥ prApte kaliyuge ghore mRdutAmupayAsyati ॥ 9 ॥
Mahābala, though it has pervaded the regions as far below as the seven nether worlds, will become soft when the terrible age of Kali arrives.

mahApAtakinazcAtra samabhyarcya mahAbalam ॥ zivaliMgaM ca gokarNe prayAtAzzAMkarampadam ॥ 10॥
Persons committing great sins have attained Śiva’s region after worshipping Mahābala, the phallic image of Śiva at Gokarṇa.

गोकर्णे तत्र मुनयो गत्वा पुण्यर्क्षवासरे ॥ येऽर्चयन्ति च तं भक्त्या ते रुद्राः स्युर्न संशय ॥ ११ ॥
gokarNe tatra munayo gatvA puNyarkSavAsare ॥ ye'rcayanti ca taM bhaktyA te rudrAH syurna saMzaya ॥ 11 ॥
O sages, those who worship the lord with devotion after going to Gokarṇa on a holy day with sacred constellation will undoubtedly become Rudras themselves.

यदा कदाचिद्गोकर्णे यो वा को वापि मानवः ॥ पूजयेच्छिवलिंगं तत्स गच्छेद्ब्रह्मणः पदम् ॥ १२॥
yadA kadAcidgokarNe yo vA ko vApi mAnavaH ॥ pUjayecchivaliMgaM tatsa gacchedbrahmaNaH padam ॥ 12॥
A devotee worshipping Śiva’s image at any time in Gokarṇa attains the region of Brahmā.

ब्रह्मविष्ण्वादिदेवानां शंकरो हित काम्यया ॥ महाबलाभिधानेन देवः संनिहितस्सदा ॥ १३॥
brahmaviSNvAdidevAnAM zaMkaro hita kAmyayA ॥ mahAbalAbhidhAnena devaH saMnihitassadA ॥ 13॥
With a desire for the welfare of Brahmā, Viṣṇu and other gods, the lord is always present there in the name of Mahābala.

घोरेण तपसा लब्धं रावणाख्येन रक्षसा॥ तल्लिंगं स्थापयामास गोकर्ण गणनायकः ॥ १४॥
ghoreNa tapasA labdhaM rAvaNAkhyena rakSasA॥ talliMgaM sthApayAmAsa gokarNa gaNanAyakaH ॥ 14॥
That phallic image secured by the Rākṣasa Rāvaṇa as a result of severe penance was installed by Gaṇanāyaka at Gokarṇa.

विष्णुर्ब्रह्मा महेन्द्रश्च विश्वदेवो मरुद्गणाः॥ आदित्या वसवो दस्रौ शशांकश्च सतारकः॥ १५॥
viSNurbrahmA mahendrazca vizvadevo marudgaNAH॥ AdityA vasavo dasrau zazAMkazca satArakaH॥ 15॥
Vishnu, Brahma, Mahendra, Visvadeva and the Maruts. The ten suns Vasus the moon and the stars.

एते विमानगतयो देवाश्च सह पार्षदैः ॥ पूर्वद्वारं निषेवन्ते तस्य वै प्रीतिकारणात् ॥ १६॥
ete vimAnagatayo devAzca saha pArSadaiH ॥ pUrvadvAraM niSevante tasya vai prItikAraNAt ॥ 16॥
These are the gods with their attendants flying in airplanes They serve the east gate because they are pleased with him.

यमो मृत्युः स्वयं साक्षाच्चित्रगुप्तश्च पावकः॥ पितृभिः सह रुद्रैश्च दक्षिणद्वारमाश्रितः ॥ १७॥
yamo mRtyuH svayaM sAkSAccitraguptazca pAvakaH॥ pitRbhiH saha rudraizca dakSiNadvAramAzritaH ॥ 17॥
Yama, the god of death himself, Citragupta, the fire-god, the manes and the Rudras resort to the southern gate.

वरुणः सरितां नाथो गंगादिसरिता गणैः ॥ महाबलं च सेवन्ते पश्चिमद्वारमाश्रिताः॥ १८॥
varuNaH saritAM nAtho gaMgAdisaritA gaNaiH ॥ mahAbalaM ca sevante pazcimadvAramAzritAH॥ 18॥
Varuṇa, the lord of all rivers, along with the rivers Gaṅgā etc. resort to the western gate and serve Mahābala.

तथा वायुः कुबेरश्च देवेशी भद्रकालिका ॥ मातृभिश्चण्डिकाद्याभिरुत्तरद्वारमाश्रिताः ॥ १९ ॥
tathA vAyuH kuberazca devezI bhadrakAlikA ॥ mAtRbhizcaNDikAdyAbhiruttaradvAramAzritAH ॥ 19 ॥
Similarly the wind god, Kubera, Bhadrakālikā, the goddess of the gods and Caṇḍikā and other Mothers resort to the northern gate.

सर्वे देवास्सगन्धर्वाः पितरः सिद्धचारणाः ॥ विद्याधराः किंपुरुषाः किन्नरा गुह्यकाः खगाः ॥ २० ॥
sarve devAssagandharvAH pitaraH siddhacAraNAH ॥ vidyAdharAH kiMpuruSAH kinnarA guhyakAH khagAH ॥ 20 ॥
All the devas gandharvas forefathers siddhas and charanas The Vidyadharas, the Kimpurushas, the Kinnaras, the Guhyakas and the birds.

नानापिशाचा वेताला दैतेयाश्च महाबलाः ॥ नागाश्शेषादयस्सर्वे सिद्धाश्च मुनयोऽखिलाः ॥ २१ ॥
nAnApizAcA vetAlA daiteyAzca mahAbalAH ॥ nAgAzzeSAdayassarve siddhAzca munayo'khilAH ॥ 21 ॥
Various devils vetalas and mighty demons All the serpents Shesha and others and all the siddhas and sages.

प्रणुवन्ति च तं देवं प्रणमन्ति महाबलम् ॥ लभन्त ईप्सितान्कामान्रमन्ते च यथासुखम् ॥ २२॥
praNuvanti ca taM devaM praNamanti mahAbalam ॥ labhanta IpsitAnkAmAnramante ca yathAsukham ॥ 22॥
They bow down and offer obeisances to that mighty god They obtain their desired desires and enjoy themselves happily.

बहुभिस्तत्र सुतपस्तप्तं सम्पूज्य तं विभुम् ॥ लब्धा हि परमा सिद्धिरिहामुत्रापि सौख्यदा ॥ २३ ॥
bahubhistatra sutapastaptaM sampUjya taM vibhum ॥ labdhA hi paramA siddhirihAmutrApi saukhyadA ॥ 23 ॥
Good penance has been performed by many after worshipping the lord. Great achievements pleasing here and hereafter have been secured by them.

gokarNe zivaliMgaM tu mokSadvAra udAhRtaH ॥ mahAbalAbhidhAno'sau pUjitaH saMstuto dvijAH ॥ 24 ॥
O brahmins, the Mahābala image of Śiva at Gokarṇa worshipped and eulogised is the doorway to salvation.

माघासितचतुर्दश्यां महाबलसमर्चनम् ॥ विमुक्तिदं विशेषेण सर्वेषां पापिनामपि ॥ २५ ॥
mAghAsitacaturdazyAM mahAbalasamarcanam ॥ vimuktidaM vizeSeNa sarveSAM pApinAmapi ॥ 25 ॥
The worship of Mahābala on the fourteenth day in the dark half of the month of Māgha yields salvation particularly even to the sinners.

asyAM zivatithau sarve mahotsavadidRkSavaH ॥ AyAMti sarvadezebhyazcAturvarNyamahAjanAH ॥ 26 ॥
On this festive day of Śiva, people of all the four castes come here from all countries, desirous of witnessing the great festivals.

स्त्रियो वृद्धाश्च बालाश्च चतुराश्रमवासिनः ॥ दृष्ट्वा तत्रेत्य देवेशं लेभिरे कृतकृत्यताम् ॥ २७ ॥
striyo vRddhAzca bAlAzca caturAzramavAsinaH ॥ dRSTvA tatretya devezaM lebhire kRtakRtyatAm ॥ 27 ॥
Women, old men, children and people of the four stages of life come there, see the lord of gods and obtain contentment.

महाबलप्रभावात्तु तच्च लिंगं शिवस्य तु ॥ सम्पूज्यैकाथ चाण्डाली शिवलोकं गता द्रुतम्॥ २८॥
mahAbalaprabhAvAttu tacca liMgaM zivasya tu ॥ sampUjyaikAtha cANDAlI zivalokaM gatA drutam॥ 28॥
It is by the power of Mahābala that a Cāṇḍālī attained Śivaloka after worshipping that image of Śiva.
