॥ sUta uvAca ॥ kadAcitsa RSizreSTho hyatrirbrahmavidAM varaH ॥ jAgRtazca jalaM dehi pratyuvAca priyAmiti ॥ 1 ॥
Sūta said:— 1. Once that great sage Atri, the foremost among the knowers of Brahman woke up and spoke to his wife “Give me water.”

Then the chaste lady of course took the waterpot He went to the forest where he could get me water.

What am I doing? Where am I going? Where can I get water? Thus astonished she saw that Ganga.

tAmanuvrajatI yAvat sAbravIcca sadA hi tAm ॥ gaMgA saridvarA devI bibhratI sundarAM tanum॥ 4॥
By the time she went over to her, Gaṅgā, the most excellent river, assumed a beautiful form and spoke to her.

Gaṅgā said:— O gentle lady, I am delighted with you. Where are you going? Tell me now. O fortunate lady, you are blessed. I shall truly carry out your behest.

sUta uvAca॥ tadvacazca tadA zrutvA RSipatnI tapasvinI॥ pratyuvAca vacaH prItyA svayaM sucakitA dvijAH ॥ 6 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing her words the saintly woman, the wife of the sage, was greatly surprised O brahmins. She replied with great pleasure.

anasUyovAca ॥ kA tvaM kamalapatrAkSi kuto vA tvaM samAgatA ॥ tathyaM brUhi kRpAM kRtvA sAdhvI supravadA satI॥ 7॥
Anasūyā said:— O beautiful lady with eyes like lotus-petals, whence have you come? Please tell me the truth. A chaste lady speaks good words.

sUta uvAca॥ ityukte ca tayA tatra munipatnyA munIzvarAH॥ saridvarA divyarUpA gaMgA vAkyamathAbravIt॥ 8॥
Sūta said:— O great sages, when the wife of the sage spoke thus, the divine formed Gaṅgā, the foremost of the rivers, said.

gaMgovAca॥ svAminaH sevanaM dRSTvA zivasya ca parAtmanaH ॥ sAdhvi dharmaM ca te dRSTvA sthitAsmi tava sannidhau ॥ 9॥
Gaṅgā said:— O chaste lady, on seeing the service rendered by you unto your lord and to Śiva the great soul and on taking view of your holy rites, I am staying near you.

ahaM gaMgA samAyAtA bhajanAtte zucismite॥ vazIbhUtA hyahaM jAtA yadicchasi vRNISva tat ॥ 10॥
O lady of pure smiles, I am Gaṅgā come here attracted by your worship. Choose whatever you wish.

Sūta said:— On hearing what Gaṅgā said, the chaste lady bowed to her and said—“If you are pleased madam, give me water now.”

ityetadvacanaM zrutvA gartaM kurSviti sA'bravIt । zIghraM cAyAcca tatkRtvA sthitA tatkSaNamAtrataH ॥ 12॥
On hearing her words Gaṅgā said—“Dig a pit.” She then made a pit in a trice, came and stood before her.

tatra sA ca praviSTA ca jalarUpamabhUttadA ॥ AzcaryyaM paramaM gatvA gRhItaM ca jalaM tayA ॥ 13 ॥
Gaṅgā entered the pit which became full of water In surprise, Anasūyā took the water.

uvAca vacanaM caitallokAnAM sukhahetave ॥ anasUyA muneH patnI divyarUpAM saridvarAm ॥ 14 ॥
Anasūyā the wife of the sage spoke for the welfare of the people to Gaṅgā, the excellent river of divine form.

anasUyovAca ॥ yadi tvaM suprasannA me vartase ca kRpAmayi ॥ sthAtavyaM ca tvayA tAvanmatsvAmI yAvadA vrajet ॥ 15॥
Anasūyā said:— If you are delighted, if you have sympathy for me you will please stay here till my husband comes.

sUta uvAca ॥ iti zrutvAnasUyAyA vacanaM sukhadaM satAm॥ gaMgovAca prasannAti hyatrerdAsyasi me'naghe ॥ 16॥
Sūta said:— On hearing the words of Anasūyā pleasing to the good, the delighted Gaṅgā said—“O sinless lady, you will give my water to Atri.”

इत्युक्ते च तया तत्र ह्यनपायि कृतन्तथा ॥ स्वामिने तज्जलं दिव्यं दत्त्वा तत्पुरतः स्थिता ॥ १७ ॥
ityukte ca tayA tatra hyanapAyi kRtantathA ॥ svAmine tajjalaM divyaM dattvA tatpurataH sthitA ॥ 17 ॥
When Gaṅgā said thus, Anasūyā acted accordingly. She gave the divine water to her lord and stood before him.

स ऋषिश्चापि सुप्रीत्या स्वाचम्य विधिपूर्वकम् ॥ पपौ दिव्यं जलं तच्च पीत्वा सुखमवाप ह ॥ १८ ॥
sa RSizcApi suprItyA svAcamya vidhipUrvakam ॥ papau divyaM jalaM tacca pItvA sukhamavApa ha ॥ 18 ॥
The sage performed the Ācamana duly with great pleasure and drank the divine water. On drinking it he derived great happiness.

अहो नित्यं जलं यच्च पीयते तज्जलं न हि ॥ विचार्येति च तेनाशु परितश्चावलोकितम् ॥ १९॥
aho nityaM jalaM yacca pIyate tajjalaM na hi ॥ vicAryeti ca tenAzu paritazcAvalokitam ॥ 19॥
“O this is not the water usually drunk by me.” After thinking thus he suddenly looked all round.

शुष्कान्वृक्षान्समालोक्य दिशो रूक्षतरास्तथा॥ उवाच तामृषिश्रेष्ठो न जातं वर्षणं पुनः ॥ २०॥
zuSkAnvRkSAnsamAlokya dizo rUkSatarAstathA॥ uvAca tAmRSizreSTho na jAtaM varSaNaM punaH ॥ 20॥
On seeing the trees dry and withered and the quarters rough and arid, the excellent sage spoke to her “No rain has fallen?”

तदुक्तं तत्समाकर्ण्य नेतिनेति प्रियान्तदा ॥ तामुवाच पुनः सोऽपि जलं नीतं कुतस्त्वया ॥ २१ ॥
taduktaM tatsamAkarNya netineti priyAntadA ॥ tAmuvAca punaH so'pi jalaM nItaM kutastvayA ॥ 21 ॥
On hearing what he said, the beloved lady replied in the negative. He then asked her whence she brought that water for him.

इत्युक्ते तु तदा तेन विस्मयं परमं गता ॥ अनसूया स्वमनसि सचिन्ता तु मुनीश्वराः ॥ २२ ॥
ityukte tu tadA tena vismayaM paramaM gatA ॥ anasUyA svamanasi sacintA tu munIzvarAH ॥ 22 ॥
When he said this, O great sages, Anasūyā was much surprised. She then thought within herself.

निवेद्यते मया चेद्वै तदोत्कर्षो भवेन्मम ॥ निवेद्यते यदा नैव व्रतभङ्गो भवेन्मम ॥ २३॥
nivedyate mayA cedvai tadotkarSo bhavenmama ॥ nivedyate yadA naiva vratabhaGgo bhavenmama ॥ 23॥
“If I tell him the truth it will be the exhibition of my greatness. If I do not tell him, it will be a violation of my rites.

नोभयं च तथा स्याद्वै निवेद्यं तत्तथा मम ॥ इति यावद्विचार्येत तावत्पृष्टा पुनः पुनः ॥ २४ ॥
nobhayaM ca tathA syAdvai nivedyaM tattathA mama ॥ iti yAvadvicAryeta tAvatpRSTA punaH punaH ॥ 24 ॥
I shall tell him in a manner to avoid the contingencies. Even as she was musing thus, she was asked again and again.

अथानुग्रहतः शंभोः प्राप्तबुद्धिः पतिव्रता ॥ उवाच श्रूयतां स्वामिन्यज्जातं कथयामि ते ॥ २५॥
athAnugrahataH zaMbhoH prAptabuddhiH pativratA ॥ uvAca zrUyatAM svAminyajjAtaM kathayAmi te ॥ 25॥
Then, thanks to the blessings of Śiva, an intelligent idea struck her mind. “O lord, please hear me. I shall tell you what has happened.”

anasUyovAca ॥ zaMkarasya pratApAcca tavaiva sukRtaistathA ॥ gaMgA samAgatAtraiva tadIyaM salilantvidam ॥ 26 ॥
Anasūyā said:— “Thanks to the power of Śiva and you merits, Gaṅgā has come here herself. This is her water, to be sure.”

सूत उवाच ॥ एवं वचस्तदा श्रुत्वा मुनिर्विस्मयमानसः ॥ प्रियामुवाच सुप्रीत्या शंकरं मनसा स्मरन्॥ २७ ॥
sUta uvAca ॥ evaM vacastadA zrutvA munirvismayamAnasaH ॥ priyAmuvAca suprItyA zaMkaraM manasA smaran॥ 27 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing this, the sage was surprised in his mind. Remembering Śiva mentally he spoke to his beloved with great pleasure.

अत्रिरुवाच ॥ प्रिये सुन्दरि त्वं सत्यमथ वाचं व्यलीककाम् ॥ ब्रवीषि च यथार्थं त्वं न मन्ये दुर्लभन्त्विदम् ॥ २८ ॥
atriruvAca ॥ priye sundari tvaM satyamatha vAcaM vyalIkakAm ॥ bravISi ca yathArthaM tvaM na manye durlabhantvidam ॥ 28 ॥
Atri said: Dear beautiful lady you are truthful and your words are deceitful And you are telling the truth I do not think this is rare

असाध्यं योगिभिर्यच्च देवैरपि सदा शुभे ॥ तच्चैवाद्य कथं जातं विस्मयः परमो मम ॥ २९ ॥
asAdhyaM yogibhiryacca devairapi sadA zubhe ॥ taccaivAdya kathaM jAtaM vismayaH paramo mama ॥ 29 ॥
O auspicious lady, how did that happen which is impossible even to the yogins and the gods. I am extremely surprised.

यद्येवं दृश्यते चेद्वै तन्मयेहं न चान्यथा ॥ इति तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा प्रत्युवाच पतिप्रिया ॥ ३० ॥
yadyevaM dRzyate cedvai tanmayehaM na cAnyathA ॥ iti tadvacanaM zrutvA pratyuvAca patipriyA ॥ 30 ॥
If I sec that myself I shall believe it, not otherwise. On hearing his words the beloved wife spoke to the husband:—

anasUyovAca ॥ AgamyatAM mayA sArddhaM tvayA nAtha mahAmune ॥ saridvarAyA gaMgAyA draSTumicchA bhavedyadi ॥ 31 ॥
Anasūyā said:— O lord, O great sage, please come with me if you wish to see Gaṅgā, the foremost among the rivers.

सूत उवाच ॥ इत्युक्त्वा तु समादाय पतिं तं सा पतिव्रता ॥ गता द्रुतं शिवं स्मृत्वा यत्र गंगा सरिद्वरा॥ ३२॥
sUta uvAca ॥ ityuktvA tu samAdAya patiM taM sA pativratA ॥ gatA drutaM zivaM smRtvA yatra gaMgA saridvarA॥ 32॥
Sūta said:— After saying this and remembering Śiva, the chaste lady took her husband to the place where Gaṅgā, the foremost among the rivers was present.

दर्शयामास तां तत्र गंगां पत्ये पतिव्रता ॥ गर्ते च संस्थितां तत्र स्वयं दिव्यस्वरूपिणीम् ॥ ३३॥
darzayAmAsa tAM tatra gaMgAM patye pativratA ॥ garte ca saMsthitAM tatra svayaM divyasvarUpiNIm ॥ 33॥
There the chaste lady showed to her husband Gaṅgā of divine form stationed within the pit.

तत्र गत्वा ऋषिश्रेष्ठो गर्तं च जलपूरितम् ॥ आकण्ठं सुन्दरं दृष्ट्वा धन्येयमिति चाब्रवीत् ॥ ३४॥
tatra gatvA RSizreSTho gartaM ca jalapUritam ॥ AkaNThaM sundaraM dRSTvA dhanyeyamiti cAbravIt ॥ 34॥
Going there and seeing the beautiful pit full to the brim with water, the excellent sage said—“She is blessed.”

किं मदीयं तपश्चैव किमन्येषां पुनस्तदा ॥ इत्युक्तो मुनिशार्दूलो भक्त्या तुष्टाव तां तदा ॥ ३५॥
kiM madIyaM tapazcaiva kimanyeSAM punastadA ॥ ityukto munizArdUlo bhaktyA tuSTAva tAM tadA ॥ 35॥
“Is this the fruit of my own penance or of somebody else?” After saying this the leading sage eulogised her with devotion.

ततो हि स मुनिस्तत्र सुस्नातः सुभगे जले ॥ आचम्य पुनरेवात्र स्तुतिं चक्रे पुनः पुनः ॥ ३६ ॥
tato hi sa munistatra susnAtaH subhage jale ॥ Acamya punarevAtra stutiM cakre punaH punaH ॥ 36 ॥
Then the sage took a clean bath in that excellent water. After performing the Ācamana he eulogised her again and again.

अनसूयापि संस्नाता सुन्दरे तज्जले तदा ॥ नित्यं चक्रे मुनिः कर्म सानसूयापि सुव्रता ॥ ३७॥
anasUyApi saMsnAtA sundare tajjale tadA ॥ nityaM cakre muniH karma sAnasUyApi suvratA ॥ 37॥
Anasūyā too took her bath in that beautiful, clear water. The sage performed the routine rites. Anasūyā too, of good rites, performed likewise.

ततस्सोवाच तां गंगा गम्यते स्वस्थलं मया ॥ इत्युक्ते च पुनः साध्वी तामुवाच सरिद्वराम् ॥ ३८॥
tatassovAca tAM gaMgA gamyate svasthalaM mayA ॥ ityukte ca punaH sAdhvI tAmuvAca saridvarAm ॥ 38॥
Then Gaṅgā told her “I am returning to my place.” When this was said, the chaste lady spoke to the leading river again.

अनसूयोवाच ॥ यदि प्रसन्ना देवेशि यद्यस्ति च कृपा मयि ॥ त्वया स्थेयं निश्चलत्वादस्मिन्देवि तपोवने ॥ ३९ ॥
anasUyovAca ॥ yadi prasannA devezi yadyasti ca kRpA mayi ॥ tvayA stheyaM nizcalatvAdasmindevi tapovane ॥ 39 ॥
Anasūyā said:— O goddess if you are delighted, if you are kind to me, you will stay in this penance-grove for ever.

महतां च स्वभावश्च नांगीकृत्य परित्यजेत्॥ इत्युक्ता च करौ बद्ध्वा तां तुष्टाव पुनःपुनः॥ ४०॥
mahatAM ca svabhAvazca nAMgIkRtya parityajet॥ ityuktA ca karau baddhvA tAM tuSTAva punaHpunaH॥ 40॥
This is the nature of the great that once they accept a request they will never forego it. After expressing her desire with joined palms, she eulogised her again and again.

ऋषिश्चापि तथोवाच त्वया स्थेयं सरिद्वरे ॥ सानुकूला भव त्वं हि सनाथान्देवि नः कुरु ॥ ४१ ॥
RSizcApi tathovAca tvayA stheyaM saridvare ॥ sAnukUlA bhava tvaM hi sanAthAndevi naH kuru ॥ 41 ॥
The sage said likewise—“O leading river, you shall stay. O goddess, be favourable to us and bless us with your support.”

On hearing his pleasing words, the leading river Gaṅgā was delighted in her mind and spoke to Anasūyā.

gaMgovAca ॥ zaMkarArcanasaMbhUtaphalaM varSasya yacchasi ॥ svAminazca tadA sthAsye devAnAmupakAraNAta। ॥ 43॥
Gaṅgā said:— I shall stay back for helping the gods if you pass on to me a year’s merit accruing to you by worshipping lord Śiva.

tathA dAnairna me tuSTistIrthasnAnaistathA ca vai ॥ yajJaistathAtha vA yogairyathA pAtivratena ca ॥ 44 ॥
I am not so much satisfied with charitable gifts, or ceremonial ablutions in the holy centres or sacrifices or the practice of Yogic rites as I am satisfied with chastity.

pativratAM yathA dRSTvA manasaH prINanaM bhavet ॥ tathA nAnyairupAyaizca satyaM me vyAhRtaM sati ॥ 45॥
O chaste lady, this is the truth I speak that the mind is not so pleased by any other means as it is pleased at the sight of a chaste lady.

pativratAM striyaM dRSTvA pApanAzo bhavenmama ॥ zuddhA jAtA vizeSeNa gaurItulyA pativratA ॥ 46 ॥
On seeing a chaste lady, all my sins have perished. I have become purified and like Pārvatī have become chaste.

tasmAcca yadi lokasya hitAya tatprayacchasi ॥ tarhyahaM sthiratAM yAsye yadi kalyANamicchasi॥ 47 ॥
If you seek for welfare, you give up that merit for the benefit of the world, then I shall become steady and stable here.

sUta uvAca ॥ ityevaM vacanaM zrutvA'nasUyA sA pativratA ॥ gaMgAyai pradadau puNyaM sarvaM tadvarSasaMbhavam ॥ 48 ॥
Sūta said:— On hearing these words, the chaste Anasūyā passed on a year’s merit to Gaṅgā.

महतां च स्वभावो हि परेषां हितमावहेत् ॥ सुवर्णं चन्दनं चेक्षुरसस्तत्र निदर्शनम् ॥ ४९ ॥
mahatAM ca svabhAvo hi pareSAM hitamAvahet ॥ suvarNaM candanaM cekSurasastatra nidarzanam ॥ 49 ॥
It is the nature of the great that they do what is beneficial to others. The instance of gold-sandal and sugarcane juice may be cited.

etaddRSTvAnasUyaM tatkarma pAtivrataM mahat ॥ prasannobhUnmahAdevaH pArthivAdAvirAzu vai ॥ 50 ॥
On seeing this performance of Anasūya, a chaste woman, Lord Śiva was delighted and appeared out of his earthern phallic form.

zaMbhuruvAca ॥ dRSTvA te karma sAdhvyetat prasanno'smi pativrate ॥ varaM brUhi priye matto yataH priyatarAsi me॥ 51 ॥
Śiva said:— O chaste lady, on seeing this activity of yours I am delighted. Mention the boon you wish to choose, since I am very fond of you.

Then the couple glanced at the wonderfully beautiful form of Śiva. On seeing five-faced Śiva they were much surprised.

natvA stutvA karau baddhvA mahAbhaktisamanvitau ॥ avocetAM samabhyarcya zaMkaraM lokazaMkaram ॥ 53 ॥
Bowing to and eulogising Śiva, the benefactor of the worlds, the couple endowed with great devotion spoke to him after worshipping him.

dampatI UcatuH ॥ yadi prasanno deveza prasannA jagadambikA ॥ asmiMstapovane tiSTha lokAnAM sukhado bhava ॥ 54 ॥
The couple said:— O lord of gods, if you are delighted, if the mother of the universe is also delighted, please stay in this penance-grove and be the bestower of happiness to the worlds.

प्रसन्ना च तदा गंगा प्रसन्नश्च शिवस्तदा ॥ उभौ तौ च स्थितौ तत्र यत्रासीदृषिसत्तमः ॥ ५५ ॥
prasannA ca tadA gaMgA prasannazca zivastadA ॥ ubhau tau ca sthitau tatra yatrAsIdRSisattamaH ॥ 55 ॥
Then the river Gaṅgā was delighted. Śiva too was pleased. They stayed at the hermitage of the excellent sage.

atrIzvarazca nAmnAsIdIzvaraH paraduHkhahA ॥ gaMgA sApi sthitA tatra tadA gartetha mAyayA ॥ 56 ॥
Lord Śiva, the destroyer of miseries was known as Atrīśvara. Gaṅgā too stayed in the pit by her magical power.

तद्दिनं हि समारभ्य तत्राक्षय्यजलं सदा ॥ हस्तमात्रे हि तद्गर्ते गंगा मन्दाकिनी ह्यभूत् ॥ ५७ ॥
taddinaM hi samArabhya tatrAkSayyajalaM sadA ॥ hastamAtre hi tadgarte gaMgA mandAkinI hyabhUt ॥ 57 ॥
Thence onwards there is a perennial supply of water in that pit deep only by a hand’s length. Gaṅgā flows gently there.

tatraiva RSayo divyAH samAjagmussahAMganAH ॥ tIrthAttIrthAcca te sarve te purA nirgatA dvijAH ॥ 58 ॥
Divine sages came there with their womenfolk and the sages who had formerly gone out of the various holy centres returned.

yavAzca vrIhayazcaiva yajJayAgaparAyaNAH ॥ yuktA RSivaraistaizca homaM cakruzca te janAH ॥ 59 ॥
Barleys and food-grains were plenty. People interested in sacrifices performed these accompanied by the sages.

karmabhistaizca saMtuSTA vRSTiM cakrurghanAstadA ॥ AnandaH paramo loke babhUvAtimunIzvarAH॥ 60 ॥
O great sages, delighted with these rites, clouds showered in plenty. There was great bliss in the world.

अत्रीश्वरस्य माहात्म्यमित्युक्तं वः सुखावहम् ॥ भुक्तिमुक्तिप्रदं सर्वकामदं भक्ति वर्द्धनम् ॥ ६१ ॥
atrIzvarasya mAhAtmyamityuktaM vaH sukhAvaham ॥ bhuktimuktipradaM sarvakAmadaM bhakti varddhanam ॥ 61 ॥
Thus the greatness of Atrīśvara has been explained to you. It is pleasing and conducive to worldly pleasures and salvation. It yields all desires and enhances devotion.
