॥ subrahmaNya uvAca ॥ ekAdazehni samprApte yo vidhissamudAhRtaH ॥ taM vakSye munizArdUla yatInAM snehatastava ॥ 1 ॥
Subrahmaṇya said:— O sage, out of affection for you I shall explain the rite for ascetics on the eleventh day after death.

sammArjya vedImAlipya kRtvA puNyAhavAcanam ॥ prokSya pazcimamArabhya pUrvAntampaJca ca kramAt॥ 2 ॥
After wiping the altar with oil and reciting the holy mantras Sprinkle five in order starting from the west and ending with the east.

मण्डलान्युत्तराशास्यः कुर्यात्स्वयमवस्थितः॥ प्रादेशमात्रं संकल्प्य चतुरस्रं च मध्यतः ॥ ३ ॥
maNDalAnyuttarAzAsyaH kuryAtsvayamavasthitaH॥ prAdezamAtraM saMkalpya caturasraM ca madhyataH ॥ 3 ॥
The north-facing man should make the circles standing on his own. Determine only a region and a square in the middle.

बिन्दुत्रिकोणषट्कोणवृत्ताकाराणि च क्रमात् ॥ शंखं च पुरतस्थाप्य पूजोक्तक्रममार्गतः ॥ ४ ॥
bindutrikoNaSaTkoNavRttAkArANi ca kramAt ॥ zaMkhaM ca puratasthApya pUjoktakramamArgataH ॥ 4 ॥
The Bindu, triangle, hexagon and circle shall be drawn in order. The conch shall be placed in front in accordance with the rales of worship.

prANAnAyamya saMkalpya pUjayitvA surezvarI ॥ devatAH paJca pUrvoktA ativAhikarUpiNIH ॥ 5 ॥
He shall perform the Prāṇāyāma and after due Saṃkalpa rite, be shall worship the five deities mentioned as messengers before.

Leaving the darbha grass on the north side and whoever touches it thereafter Starting from the west, follow the path of the six seats.

They placed flowers inside the circles like a seat Saying 'Om Hri', he worshiped the deity in the form of fire.

आवाहयामि नम इत्यन्तं सर्वत्र भावयेत् ॥ दर्शयेत्स्थापनाद्यास्तु मुद्राः प्रत्येकमादरात् ॥ ८ ॥
AvAhayAmi nama ityantaM sarvatra bhAvayet ॥ darzayetsthApanAdyAstu mudrAH pratyekamAdarAt ॥ 8 ॥
One should meditate everywhere at the end of the mantra 'I offer my obeisances' One should show the postures of installation and others with respect to each one.

ह्रांह्रीमित्यादिना कुर्य्यादासामंगानि च क्रमात् ॥ पाशांकुशाभयाभीष्टपाणिचन्द्रोपलप्रभाः ॥ ९ ॥
hrAMhrImityAdinA kuryyAdAsAmaMgAni ca kramAt ॥ pAzAMkuzAbhayAbhISTapANicandropalaprabhAH ॥ 9 ॥
The Aṅganyāsas for the deities shall be performed with Hrām, Hrīm etc. The messenger goddesses shall have the noose, goad, gestures of fearlessness and wish in their hands. They are as lustrous as the lunar stone.

रक्तांगुलीयकच्छायरञ्जिताखिलदिङ्मुखा ॥ रक्ताम्बरधराः कारपदपंकजशोभिताः ॥ १०॥
raktAMgulIyakacchAyaraJjitAkhiladiGmukhA ॥ raktAmbaradharAH kArapadapaMkajazobhitAH ॥ 10॥
They have changed (or enhanced) the hue of the quarters by the lustre of their gemset rings. They wear red garments and shine with lotus-like hands and feet.

त्रिनेत्रोल्लासिवदनपूर्णचन्द्रमनोहराः ॥ माणिक्य मुकुटोद्भासिचन्द्रलेखावतंसिताः॥ ११ ॥
trinetrollAsivadanapUrNacandramanoharAH ॥ mANikya mukuTodbhAsicandralekhAvataMsitAH॥ 11 ॥
They look charming with their faces resembling the full moon and brilliant with three eyes. They are decorated with the crescent moon shining above their ruby-set coronets.

कुण्डलामृष्टगण्डाश्च पीनोन्नतपयोधराः ॥ हारकेयूरकटककांचीदाममनोहराः ॥ १२ ॥
kuNDalAmRSTagaNDAzca pInonnatapayodharAH ॥ hArakeyUrakaTakakAMcIdAmamanoharAH ॥ 12 ॥
Their swinging ear-rings tickle their cheeks. They have plump and elevated breasts. They are charming with their necklace, shoulderlets, bangles and girdles.

तनुमध्याः पृथुश्रोण्यो रक्तदिव्याम्बरावृताः ॥ माणिक्यमयमंजीरसिंजत्पदसरोरुहाः॥ पादांगुलीयकश्रोणीर्मंजुलातिमनोहराः॥ १३ ॥
tanumadhyAH pRthuzroNyo raktadivyAmbarAvRtAH ॥ mANikyamayamaMjIrasiMjatpadasaroruhAH॥ pAdAMgulIyakazroNIrmaMjulAtimanoharAH॥ 13 ॥
Their waists are slender and buttocks large. They wear divine red garments. The ruby-set anklets jingle and tinkle in their lotus-like feet. The rings in their toes are very charming.

अनुग्रहेण मूर्तेन शिववत्किं नु साध्यते॥ तस्माच्छक्त्यात्ममूर्तेन सर्वं साध्यं महेशवत् ॥ १४ ॥
anugraheNa mUrtena zivavatkiM nu sAdhyate॥ tasmAcchaktyAtmamUrtena sarvaM sAdhyaM mahezavat ॥ 14 ॥
What blessing can be secured from a departed soul? Only from a powerful soul can everything be achieved as from Maheśa.

सर्वानुग्रहकर्त्रैव स्वीकृताः पंचमूर्तय॥ सर्वकार्य्यकरा दिव्याः परानुग्रहतत्पराः॥ १५ ॥
sarvAnugrahakartraiva svIkRtAH paMcamUrtaya॥ sarvakAryyakarA divyAH parAnugrahatatparAH॥ 15 ॥
The five deities capable of all activities and eager to bless others are accepted by the lord as the bestowers of bliss.

एवं ध्यात्वा तु ताः सर्वा अनुग्रहपराश्शिवाः ॥ पादयोः पाद्यमेतासां दद्याच्छंखोदबिन्दुभिः ॥ १६ ॥
evaM dhyAtvA tu tAH sarvA anugrahaparAzzivAH ॥ pAdayoH pAdyametAsAM dadyAcchaMkhodabindubhiH ॥ 16 ॥
After meditating on the auspicious deities eager to bless he shall offer Pādya at their feet with drops of water from the conch.

हस्तेष्वाचमनीयं च मौलिष्वर्घ्यं प्रदापयेत्॥ शंखोद बिन्दुभिस्तासां स्नानकर्म च भावयेत्॥ १७ ॥
hasteSvAcamanIyaM ca mauliSvarghyaM pradApayet॥ zaMkhoda bindubhistAsAM snAnakarma ca bhAvayet॥ 17 ॥
The water for Ācamana shall be offered in their hands and Arghya on their heads. He shall conceive of their ritualistic ablution with the drops of water from the conch.

रक्ताम्बराणि दिव्यानि सोत्तरीयाणि दापयेत् ॥ मुकुटादीन्यनर्घ्याणि दद्यादाभरणानि च॥ १८ ॥
raktAmbarANi divyAni sottarIyANi dApayet ॥ mukuTAdInyanarghyANi dadyAdAbharaNAni ca॥ 18 ॥
Beautiful garments red in colour shall be offered along with upper cloths. Coronets and ornaments shall also be offered.

सुवासितं च श्रीखण्डमक्षतांश्चातिशोभनान्॥ सुरभीणि मनोज्ञानि कुसुमानि च दापयेत् ॥ १९ ॥
suvAsitaM ca zrIkhaNDamakSatAMzcAtizobhanAn॥ surabhINi manojJAni kusumAni ca dApayet ॥ 19 ॥
Fragrant sandal wood, auspicious Akṣatas and charming fragrant flowers shall also be offered.

धूपं च परमामोदं साज्यवर्ति च दीपकम्॥ सर्वं समर्पयामीति प्रणवं ह्रीमुपक्रमात् ॥ २०॥
dhUpaM ca paramAmodaM sAjyavarti ca dIpakam॥ sarvaM samarpayAmIti praNavaM hrImupakramAt ॥ 20॥
Incense and a lamp of great fragrance I offer everything, he said, starting with the oṁkāra Hrī.

नमोऽन्तंचततोदद्यात्पायस्तमधुनाप्लुतम्॥ साज्यशर्करयापूपकदलीगुडपूरितम्॥ २१ ॥
namo'ntaMcatatodadyAtpAyastamadhunAplutam॥ sAjyazarkarayApUpakadalIguDapUritam॥ 21 ॥
Obeisance to the end of the fourth and offer the rice now soaked. Filled with sage sugar, bread, banana and jaggery.

प्रत्येकं कदलीपत्रे भरितं च सुवासितम् ॥ भूर्भुवस्स्वरिति प्रोच्य प्रोक्ष्णादीनि कारयेत ॥ २२ ॥
pratyekaM kadalIpatre bharitaM ca suvAsitam ॥ bhUrbhuvassvariti procya prokSNAdIni kArayeta ॥ 22 ॥
Different articles shall be heaped on separate plantain leaves and rendered fragrant. They shall be sprinkled with water uttering “Bhuḥ Bhuvaḥ Svaḥ”.

ॐ ह्रीमिति समुच्चार्य्य नैवेद्यं वह्निजायया ॥ पानीयं नम इत्युक्त्वा परम्प्रेम्णा समर्पयेत् ॥ २३ ॥
OM hrImiti samuccAryya naivedyaM vahnijAyayA ॥ pAnIyaM nama ityuktvA parampremNA samarpayet ॥ 23 ॥
Naivedya shall be offered with; “Om Hrīm Svāhā”. With “Namaḥ” water shall be offered with great devotion.

तत उद्वासयेत्प्रीत्या पूर्वतो मुनिसत्तम ॥ स्थलं विशोध्य गंडूषाचमनार्घ्याणि दापयेत् ॥ २४ ॥
tata udvAsayetprItyA pUrvato munisattama ॥ sthalaM vizodhya gaMDUSAcamanArghyANi dApayet ॥ 24 ॥
O excellent sage, thereafter the rite of Udvāsana shall be performed with devotion. The place shall be mopped clean beginning with the cast. Then water for gargling and Ācamana shall be offered with Arghya.

तांबूलं धूप दीपौ च प्रदक्षिणनमस्कृती ॥ विधाय प्रार्थयेदेताश्शिरस्यंजलिमादधत्॥ २५ ॥
tAMbUlaM dhUpa dIpau ca pradakSiNanamaskRtI ॥ vidhAya prArthayedetAzzirasyaMjalimAdadhat॥ 25 ॥
After offering Tāmbūla, incense and lights, the circumambulation and obeisance shall be performed. The deities shall be prayed with the joined palms placed on the head reverentially.

श्रीमातरस्सुप्रसन्ना यतिं शिवपदैषिणम्॥ रक्षणीय म्प्रब्रुवन्तु परमेशपदाब्जयोः॥ २६ ॥
zrImAtarassuprasannA yatiM zivapadaiSiNam॥ rakSaNIya mprabruvantu paramezapadAbjayoH॥ 26 ॥
“May the glorious mothers be delighted. At the lotus-like feet of Parameśa let them recommend the protection of the deceased ascetic who is desirous of attaining the region of Śiva.

इति संप्रार्थ्य तास्सर्वा विसृज्य च यथागतम्॥ तासाम्प्रसादमुद्धृत्य कन्यकाभ्यः प्रदापयेत ॥ २७ ॥
iti saMprArthya tAssarvA visRjya ca yathAgatam॥ tAsAmprasAdamuddhRtya kanyakAbhyaH pradApayeta ॥ 27 ॥
After ritualistically dismissing them along the way they had come, the remanents of the Naivedya shall be distributed among the virgins.

गोभ्यो वा जलमध्ये वा निक्षिपेन्नान्यथा क्वचित् ॥ अत्रैव पार्वणं कुर्य्यान्नैकोद्दिष्टं यतेः क्वचित् ॥ २८ ॥
gobhyo vA jalamadhye vA nikSipennAnyathA kvacit ॥ atraiva pArvaNaM kuryyAnnaikoddiSTaM yateH kvacit ॥ 28 ॥
It shall be given to the cows or cast off into water: There is no other way of disposal. Pārvaṇa and not Ekoddiṣṭa Śrāddha shall be performed for an ascetic.

अत्रायं पार्वणश्राद्धे नियमः प्रोच्यते मया ॥ तं शृणुष्व मुनिश्रेष्ठ येन श्रेयो भवेत्ततः॥ २९ ॥
atrAyaM pArvaNazrAddhe niyamaH procyate mayA ॥ taM zRNuSva munizreSTha yena zreyo bhavettataH॥ 29 ॥
I shall now tell you the rules for the Pārvaṇa for your welfare. O sage, listen.

कर्ता स्नात्वा धृतप्राण उपवीती समाहितः॥ सपवित्रकरस्त्वस्यां पुण्यतिथ्यामिति ब्रुवन् ॥ ३० ॥
kartA snAtvA dhRtaprANa upavItI samAhitaH॥ sapavitrakarastvasyAM puNyatithyAmiti bruvan ॥ 30 ॥
The doer bathes, holds his breath, wears a sash and concentrates. Saying this he should purify himself on this holy occasion.

करिष्ये पार्वणं श्राद्धमिति संकल्प्य चोत्तरे ॥ दद्याद्दर्भानुत्तमांश्च ह्यासनार्थं जलं स्पृशेत्॥ ३१ ॥
kariSye pArvaNaM zrAddhamiti saMkalpya cottare ॥ dadyAddarbhAnuttamAMzca hyAsanArthaM jalaM spRzet॥ 31 ॥
I will perform Parvana and Shraddha in the north, resolving to do so. He should offer the best of darbha grass and touch water for the seat.

तत्रोपवेशयेद्भक्त्या साभ्यंगं कृतमज्जनान् ॥ आहूय चतुरो विप्राञ्छिवभक्तान्दृढव्रतान् ॥ ३२ ॥
tatropavezayedbhaktyA sAbhyaMgaM kRtamajjanAn ॥ AhUya caturo viprAJchivabhaktAndRDhavratAn ॥ 32 ॥
There one should seat the devotees who have taken bath with their limbs. He summoned four brāhmaṇas devoted to Lord Śiva and firm in their vows.

विश्वेदेवार्थं भवता प्रसादः क्रियतामिति ॥ आत्मने भवता पश्चादन्तरात्मन इत्यपि ॥ ३३ ॥
vizvedevArthaM bhavatA prasAdaH kriyatAmiti ॥ Atmane bhavatA pazcAdantarAtmana ityapi ॥ 33 ॥
Please do me a favor for the sake of Visvedeva. By you to the self, and later to the inner self.

परमात्मन इत्येवं प्रोच्य प्रार्थ्यं च तान्यतिः ॥ श्रद्धया चरणन्तेषां कुर्य्याद्याथार्थ्यमादरात् ॥ ३४ ॥
paramAtmana ityevaM procya prArthyaM ca tAnyatiH ॥ zraddhayA caraNanteSAM kuryyAdyAthArthyamAdarAt ॥ 34 ॥
Having thus spoken of the Supreme Soul he offered them prayers With faith and respect one should treat them at their feet.

पादौ प्रक्षाल्य तेषान्तु प्राङ्मुखानुपवेश्य च ॥ गन्धादिभिरलंकृत्य भोजयेच्च शिवा ग्रतः ॥ ३५ ॥
pAdau prakSAlya teSAntu prAGmukhAnupavezya ca ॥ gandhAdibhiralaMkRtya bhojayecca zivA grataH ॥ 35 ॥
The feet of the brahmins shall be washed and they shall be made to sit facing the east. After decorating them with scents, sandal paste etc., they shall be led in front of Śiva.

गोमयेनोपलिप्यात्र दर्भान्प्रागग्रकल्पितान् ॥ आस्तीर्य्य संयतप्राणः पिण्डानां च प्रदानकम् ॥ ३६ ॥
gomayenopalipyAtra darbhAnprAgagrakalpitAn ॥ AstIryya saMyataprANaH piNDAnAM ca pradAnakam ॥ 36 ॥
Cover the darbha grass with cow dung He spread out and restrained his breath and gave the bodies.

करिष्य इति संकल्प्य मण्डलत्रयमर्च्य च ॥ आत्मानमन्तरात्मानं परमात्मनमप्यतः ॥ ३७ ॥
kariSya iti saMkalpya maNDalatrayamarcya ca ॥ AtmAnamantarAtmAnaM paramAtmanamapyataH ॥ 37 ॥
Having resolved to do so he worshiped the three mandalas The Self within the Self and the Supreme Self.

चतुर्थ्यन्तं वदन्पश्चादिमं पिण्डमितीरयन् ॥ ददामीति च सम्प्रोच्य दद्यात्पिण्डान्स्वभक्तितः ॥ ३८ ॥
caturthyantaM vadanpazcAdimaM piNDamitIrayan ॥ dadAmIti ca samprocya dadyAtpiNDAnsvabhaktitaH ॥ 38 ॥
Saying the fourth end, he later called this body. After saying, “I give you,” one should offer the bodies with devotion.

कुशोदकं ततो दद्याद्यथाविधिविधानतः ॥ तत उत्थाप्य वै कुर्य्यात्प्रदक्षिणनमस्कृती ॥ ३९ ॥
kuzodakaM tato dadyAdyathAvidhividhAnataH ॥ tata utthApya vai kuryyAtpradakSiNanamaskRtI ॥ 39 ॥
Then one should offer Kushodaka in accordance with the prescribed rituals Then one should lift him up and offer circumambulation and offer obeisances.

ततो दत्त्वा ब्राह्मणेभ्यो दक्षिणां च यथाविधि ॥ नारायणबलिं कुर्य्यात्तस्मिन्नेव स्थले दिने ॥ ४० ॥

After giving gifts to the Brahmins according to the rules he shall offer Nārāyaṇa Bali at the same spot on the same day.

rakSArthameva sarvatra viSNoH pUjAvidhiH smRtaH ॥ kuryyAdviSNormahApUjAM pAyasAnnaM nivedayet॥ 41 ॥
Everywhere Viṣṇu shall be worshipped for protection. He shall perform the worship of Viṣṇu and offer milk pudding as Naīvedya.

Then he summoned twelve brahmins well versed in the Vedas They worshiped him with Keshava and other offerings of fragrant flowers and unbroken grains.

उपानच्छत्रवस्त्रादि दत्त्वा तेभ्यो यथाविधि ॥ सन्तोषयेन्महाभक्त्या विविधैर्वच नैश्शुभैः ॥ ४३ ॥
upAnacchatravastrAdi dattvA tebhyo yathAvidhi ॥ santoSayenmahAbhaktyA vividhairvaca naizzubhaiH ॥ 43 ॥
Giving them shoes, umbrellas, clothes and other things in accordance with the custom. One should satisfy them with great devotion and various auspicious words.

आस्तीर्य्य दर्भान्पूर्वाग्रान्भूस्स्वाहा च भुवस्सुवः ॥ प्रणवादि प्रोच्य भूमौ पायसान्नं बलिं हरेत् ॥ ४४ ॥
AstIryya darbhAnpUrvAgrAnbhUssvAhA ca bhuvassuvaH ॥ praNavAdi procya bhUmau pAyasAnnaM baliM haret ॥ 44 ॥
He shall spread Darbha grass on the ground with their tips to the east. After saying “Bhūḥ Svāhā, Bhuvaḥ Svāhā, Suvaḥ Svāhā, Om.” He shall offer milk pudding as oblation.

ekAdazAha suvidhirmayA prokto munIzvara ॥ dvAdazAhavidhiM vakSye zRNuSvAdarato dvija ॥ 45 ॥
O great sage, the rite of the eleventh day has been mentioned by me. O brahmin, I shall now explain the twelfth day rites.
