vAmadeva uvAca ॥ ye muktA yatayasteSAM dAhakarmma na vidyate ॥ mRte zarIre khananaM taddehasya zrutaM mayA॥ 1 ॥
Vamdeva said:- There is no cremation ritual for those who are liberated ascetics I have heard of the excavation of a dead body.

tatkarmAcakSva suprItyA kArtikeya guro mama॥ tvattonyo na hi saMvaktA triSu lokeSu vidyate ॥ 2 ॥
O Kartikeya, my spiritual master, please tell me about that action with great pleasure. There is no one in the three worlds who can speak to you other than you.

pUrNAhaM bhAvamAzritya ye muktA dehapaMjarAt ॥ ye tUpAsanamArgeNa dehamuktAH paraMgataH ॥ 3 ॥
Those who are freed from the cage of the body by taking refuge in the full ego Those who have attained liberation from the body by the path of worship.

O lord son of Shankara please describe the special movements of these demigods You should tell me with great pleasure, considering me as your disciple.

॥sUta uvAca ॥ munivijJaptimAkarNya zaktiputrassurArihA ॥ prAhAtyantarahasyaM tadbhRguNA zrutamIzvarAt ॥ 5 ॥
On hearing the request of the sage, the son of Śakti, destroyer of demons spoke about the great secret which had been heard from Śiva by Bhṛgu.

॥ subrahmaNya uvAca ॥ idameva mune guhyaM bhRgave zivayogine ॥ uktaM bhagavatA sAkSAtsarvajJena pinAkinA ॥ 6 ॥
It is this secret, O sage, that was explained to Bhṛgu, the devotee of Śiva by the omniscient Pināka-bearing lord himself.

वक्ष्ये तदद्य ते ब्रह्मन्न देयं यस्य कस्यचित् ॥ देयं शिष्याय शान्ताय शिवभक्तियुताय वै ॥ ७ ॥
vakSye tadadya te brahmanna deyaM yasya kasyacit ॥ deyaM ziSyAya zAntAya zivabhaktiyutAya vai ॥ 7 ॥
O Brahmin, I shall explain it to you. It shall not be given to any or every one indiscriminately. It shall be given to a calm disciple equipped with devotion to Śiva.

समाधिस्थो यतिः कश्चिच्छिवभावेन देहभुक् ॥ अस्ति चेत्स महाधीरः परिपूर्णश्शिवो भवेत् ॥ ८ ॥
samAdhistho yatiH kazcicchivabhAvena dehabhuk ॥ asti cetsa mahAdhIraH paripUrNazzivo bhavet ॥ 8 ॥
If there is any ascetic who has quit his body while in trance with his devotion for Śiva he becomes Śiva himself.

अधैर्य्यचित्तो यः कश्चित्समाधिं न च विंदति ॥ तदुपायम्प्रवक्ष्यामि सावधानतया शृणु ॥ ९ ॥
adhairyyacitto yaH kazcitsamAdhiM na ca viMdati ॥ tadupAyampravakSyAmi sAvadhAnatayA zRNu ॥ 9 ॥
If there is such a person devoid of concentration who docs not attain Samādhi, I shall mention the means of remedy for him. Listen attentively.

त्रिपदार्थपरिज्ञानं वेदान्तागमवाक्यजम् ॥ श्रुत्वा गुरोर्मुखाद्योगमभ्यसेत्स यमादिकम् ॥ १०॥
tripadArthaparijJAnaM vedAntAgamavAkyajam ॥ zrutvA gurormukhAdyogamabhyasetsa yamAdikam ॥ 10॥
On hearing from his preceptor the lore of Vedānta and Āgamas along with the explanation he shall practise Yoga by means of Yama, Niyama etc.

तत्कुर्वन्स यतिस्सम्यक्छिवध्यानपरो भवेत् ॥ नियमेन मुने नित्यं प्रणवासक्तमानसः ॥ ११ ॥
tatkurvansa yatissamyakchivadhyAnaparo bhavet ॥ niyamena mune nityaM praNavAsaktamAnasaH ॥ 11 ॥
O sage, practising it regularly the ascetic shall be attached to Praṇava and be well-engaged in the meditation on Śiva.

देहदौर्बल्यवशतो यद्यधैर्य्यधरो यतिः ॥ अकामश्च शिवं स्मृत्वा स जीर्णां स्वां तनुं त्यजेत् ॥ १२ ॥
dehadaurbalyavazato yadyadhairyyadharo yatiH ॥ akAmazca zivaM smRtvA sa jIrNAM svAM tanuM tyajet ॥ 12 ॥
If he is devoid of courage due to physical weakness, he shall remember Śiva with specific desires and cast off his worn-out body.

O sage, there are five deities in the forms of messengers who by the favour of Sadāśiva are put in the charge of Nandin.

AtmahantAkRtiH kAcijjyottiHpuMjavapuSmatI ॥ ahno'bhimAninI kAcicchuklapakSAbhimAninI ॥ 14 ॥
A woman in the form of a suicide bomber flowered with a beam of light Some of them were proud of the day and some of them were proud of their white wings.

उत्तरायणरूपा च पंचानुग्रहतत्परा ॥ धूम्रा तमस्विनी रात्रिः कृष्णपक्षाभिमानिनी ॥ १५ ॥
uttarAyaNarUpA ca paMcAnugrahatatparA ॥ dhUmrA tamasvinI rAtriH kRSNapakSAbhimAninI ॥ 15 ॥
She is in the form of Uttarayana and is devoted to the five graces. The night is smoky and dark and proud of its dark wings.

दक्षिणायनरूपेति विश्रुताः पञ्च देवताः ॥ तासां वृत्तिं शृणुष्वाद्य वामदेव महामुने ॥ १६ ॥
dakSiNAyanarUpeti vizrutAH paJca devatAH ॥ tAsAM vRttiM zRNuSvAdya vAmadeva mahAmune ॥ 16 ॥
The five deities are known as the forms of the Dakshinayana. O great sage Vamadeva now hear the story of those women.

ताः पंचदेवता जीवान्कर्मानुष्ठान तत्परान् ॥ गृहीत्वा त्रिदिवं यांति तत्पुण्यवशतो मुने ॥ १७ ॥
tAH paMcadevatA jIvAnkarmAnuSThAna tatparAn ॥ gRhItvA tridivaM yAMti tatpuNyavazato mune ॥ 17 ॥
Those five deities are living beings who are devoted to the performance of rituals O sage by virtue of that merit they take it and go to heaven.

भुक्त्वा भोगान्यथोक्तांश्च ते तत्पुण्यक्षये पुनः ॥ मानुषं लोकमासाद्य भजते जन्मपूर्ववत् ॥ १८ ॥
bhuktvA bhogAnyathoktAMzca te tatpuNyakSaye punaH ॥ mAnuSaM lokamAsAdya bhajate janmapUrvavat ॥ 18 ॥
After enjoying the pleasures in heaven as mentioned, at the diminution of the merit they return to the human realm and take births as before.

ताः पुनः पंचधा मार्गं विभज्यारभ्य भूतलम् ॥ अग्न्यादिक्रमतां गृह्यं सदाशिवपदं यतिः ॥ १९ ॥
tAH punaH paMcadhA mArgaM vibhajyArabhya bhUtalam ॥ agnyAdikramatAM gRhyaM sadAzivapadaM yatiH ॥ 19 ॥
They again divided the path into five parts and started on the ground The Yati should accept the abode of Sadashiva in the order of fire and others.

निनीय वन्द्यचरणौ देवदेवस्य पृष्ठतः ॥ तिष्ठंत्यनुग्रहाकाराः कर्म्मण्येव प्रयोजिताः ॥ २० ॥
ninIya vandyacaraNau devadevasya pRSThataH ॥ tiSThaMtyanugrahAkArAH karmmaNyeva prayojitAH ॥ 20 ॥
He brought the worshipful feet behind the Lord of the gods. They remain in the form of grace and are engaged in action.

समागतमभिप्रेक्ष्य देवदेवस्सदा शिवः ॥ विरक्तश्चेन्महामंत्रतात्पर्यमुपदिश्य च ॥ २१ ॥
samAgatamabhiprekSya devadevassadA zivaH ॥ viraktazcenmahAmaMtratAtparyamupadizya ca ॥ 21 ॥
Lord Shiva, the god of the gods, always looked at the assembly. If he is detached he will teach the meaning of the great mantra.

स्वसाम्यं च वपुर्दत्ते गाणपत्येभिषिच्य च ॥ अनुगृह्णाति सर्वेशश्शंकरः सर्वनायकः ॥ २२ ॥
svasAmyaM ca vapurdatte gANapatyebhiSicya ca ॥ anugRhNAti sarvezazzaMkaraH sarvanAyakaH ॥ 22 ॥
He gave him his equal body and consecrated him as Ganapati Lord Śiva the lord of all and the leader of all is gracious.

मृगटंकत्रिशूलाग्र्यवरदानविभूषितम् ॥ त्रिनेत्रं चन्द्रशकलं गंगोल्लासिजटाधरम् ॥ २३ ॥
mRgaTaMkatrizUlAgryavaradAnavibhUSitam ॥ trinetraM candrazakalaM gaMgollAsijaTAdharam ॥ 23 ॥
He was adorned with deer tanks and tridents and gifts Three-eyed moon-shaped matted hair with the brightness of the Ganges.

अधिष्ठितविमानाग्र्यं सर्वदं सर्वकामदम् ॥ इति शाखाविरक्तश्चेद्रुद्रकन्यासमावृतम् ॥ २४ ॥
adhiSThitavimAnAgryaM sarvadaM sarvakAmadam ॥ iti zAkhAviraktazcedrudrakanyAsamAvRtam ॥ 24 ॥
He is the foremost of the planes he sits on and gives everything and fulfills all desires. If he is thus detached from the branches he is covered by the daughter of Rudra.

नृत्यगीतमृदंगादिवाद्यघोषमनोहरम् ॥ दिव्याम्बरस्रगालेप भूषणैरपि भूषितम् ॥ २५ ॥
nRtyagItamRdaMgAdivAdyaghoSamanoharam ॥ divyAmbarasragAlepa bhUSaNairapi bhUSitam ॥ 25 ॥
The sounds of dances, songs, mridangas and other instruments were delightful. He was adorned with divine clothes, garlands, ointments and ornaments.

divyAmRtaghaTaiH pUrNaM divyAMbhaHparipUritam ॥ sUryakoTipratIkAzaM caMdrakoTisuzItalam ॥ 26 ॥
It was filled with pots of divine nectar and filled with divine water It was as bright as millions of suns and cooler than millions of moons.

He favored the speed of the mind and the omnipresent airplane Even after he had enjoyed the pleasures his curiosity for pleasures disappeared.

निपात्य शक्तिं तीव्रतरां प्रकृत्या ह्यति दुर्गमाम् ॥ कान्तारं दग्धुकामान्तान्मलयानलसुप्रभाम् ॥ २८ ॥
nipAtya zaktiM tIvratarAM prakRtyA hyati durgamAm ॥ kAntAraM dagdhukAmAntAnmalayAnalasuprabhAm ॥ 28 ॥
Dropping down the power which is more intense and by nature more difficult to reach. They wanted to burn the desert and they shone like the Malayan fire.

अनुगृह्य महामंत्रतात्पर्यम्परमेश्वरः ॥ पूर्णोहं भावनारूपः शंभुर स्मीति निश्चलम् ॥ २९ ॥
anugRhya mahAmaMtratAtparyamparamezvaraH ॥ pUrNohaM bhAvanArUpaH zaMbhura smIti nizcalam ॥ 29 ॥
The Supreme Lord graciously chanted the great mantra I am complete and I am Shambhu in the form of emotion and I am unmoved.

anugRhya samAdhizca svadAsyaspandarUpiNIH ॥ ravyAdikarmmasAmarthyarUpAH siddhIranargalAH ॥ 30॥
Graciously and in trance she assumed the form of the vibration of her maidservant They are the forms of the power of the sun and other actions and are the sources of perfection.

आयुः क्षये पद्मयोनेः पुनरावृत्तिवर्जिताम् ॥ मुक्तिं च परमां तस्मै प्रयच्छति जगद्गुरुः ॥ ३१ ॥
AyuH kSaye padmayoneH punarAvRttivarjitAm ॥ muktiM ca paramAM tasmai prayacchati jagadguruH ॥ 31 ॥
At the end of her life she is forbidden to return to the lotus womb The spiritual master of the universe grants him supreme liberation.

एतदेव पदं तस्मात्सर्वैश्वर्य्यं समष्टिमत्॥ मुक्तिघंटापथं चेति वेदांतानां विनिश्चयः ॥ ३२ ॥
etadeva padaM tasmAtsarvaizvaryyaM samaSTimat॥ muktighaMTApathaM ceti vedAMtAnAM vinizcayaH ॥ 32 ॥
The attainment of this region is the accumulation of all prosperity and glory. It is the highway to salvation, the conclusion of Vedāntas.

मुमूर्षोस्तस्य मन्दस्य यतेस्सत्सम्प्रदायिनः ॥ यतयः सानुकूलत्वात्तिष्ठेयुः परित स्तदा ॥ ३३ ॥
mumUrSostasya mandasya yatessatsampradAyinaH ॥ yatayaH sAnukUlatvAttiSTheyuH parita stadA ॥ 33 ॥
When the ascetic of good, tradition is slowly dying the other ascetics shall stand around him with their attitude in conformity with their wishes.

ततस्सर्वे च ते तत्र प्रणवादीन्यनुक्रमात् ॥ उपदिश्य च वाक्यानि तात्पर्यं च समाहिताः ॥ ३४ ॥
tatassarve ca te tatra praNavAdInyanukramAt ॥ upadizya ca vAkyAni tAtparyaM ca samAhitAH ॥ 34 ॥
Then all of them chanted the oṁkāras in order They instructed him in the phrases and concentrated on their meaning.

वर्णयेयुः स्फुटं प्रीत्या शिवं संस्मारयन्सदा ॥ निर्गुणं परमज्योतिः प्रणम्य विलयावधि ॥ ३५ ॥
varNayeyuH sphuTaM prItyA zivaM saMsmArayansadA ॥ nirguNaM paramajyotiH praNamya vilayAvadhi ॥ 35 ॥
They should describe it clearly with love and always remember Lord Shiva. The Supreme Light bowed down to the transcendental until the time of dissolution.

एतेषां सममेवात्र संस्कारक्रम उच्यते ॥ असंस्कृतशरीराणां दौर्गत्यं नैव जायते ॥ ३६ ॥
eteSAM samamevAtra saMskArakrama ucyate ॥ asaMskRtazarIrANAM daurgatyaM naiva jAyate ॥ 36 ॥
The procedure of obsequies shall be followed. If their bodies are not cremated they are likely to miss the good goal.

संन्यस्य सर्वकर्म्माणि शिवाश्रयपरा यतः ॥ देहं दूषयतस्तेषां राज्ञो राष्ट्रं च नश्यति ॥ ३७ ॥
saMnyasya sarvakarmmANi zivAzrayaparA yataH ॥ dehaM dUSayatasteSAM rAjJo rASTraM ca nazyati ॥ 37 ॥
Since they have renounced all their activities and have resorted to Śiva, if the king defiles their bodies his kingdom will be ruined.

तद्ग्रामवासिनस्तेऽपि भवेयुर्भृशदुःखिनः ॥ तद्दोषपरिहाराय विधानं चैवमुच्यते ॥ ३८ ॥
tadgrAmavAsinaste'pi bhaveyurbhRzaduHkhinaH ॥ taddoSaparihArAya vidhAnaM caivamucyate ॥ 38 ॥
The people of that village too will suffer distress. The following procedure shall be taken up to avoid that default.

स तु नम हरिण्याय चेत्यारभ्य विनम्रधीः ॥ नम आमीवत्केभ्यान्तं तत्काले प्रजपेन्मनुम् ॥ ३९ ॥
sa tu nama hariNyAya cetyArabhya vinamradhIH ॥ nama AmIvatkebhyAntaM tatkAle prajapenmanum ॥ 39 ॥
Humbly the king shall begin with “obeisance to Iriṇya” and recite the mantra ending with “obeisance to Āmīvatkas”.

ॐमित्यन्ते जपन्देवयजनम्पूरयेत्ततः ॥ ततश्शान्तिर्भवेत्तस्य दोषस्य हि मुनीश्वर ॥ ४० ॥
OMmityante japandevayajanampUrayettataH ॥ tatazzAntirbhavettasya doSasya hi munIzvara ॥ 40 ॥
Repeating Om in the end he shall complete the worship of the lord. O great sage, this procedure will quell the defect.

पुत्रादयो यथा न्यायं कुर्य्युस्संस्कारमुत्तमम् ॥ वच्मि तत्कृपया विप्र सावधानतया शृणु ॥ ४१ ॥

The waving of the lights fumigating with incense, milk and the food offering shall be offered with Praṇava. The grave shall be circumambulated. They shall them prostrate five times.

After repeating the Praṇava twelve times they shall again make obeisance. To every quarter and interstice food offering shall be offered with Praṇava.
