subrahmaNya uvAca ॥ kSaurasnAnavidhiM vakSye vAmadeva mahAmune ॥ yasya sadyo vidhAnena zuddhissyAdyatinaH parA ॥ 1 ॥
Subrahmaṇya said:- O sage Vāmadeva I shall now explain the rules of hair-cutting and ablution. These if performed immediately are conducive to great purity of the ascetic.

yogapaTTaprakArasya vidhimprApya munIzvara॥ sa ziSyassyAdvratI pUrNaH kSaurakarmmodyato bhavet॥ 2 ॥
O sage, after the consecration as a disciple he shall observe the other rites and get ready for the tonsorial ceremony.

गुरुं नत्वा विशेषेण लब्धानुज्ञस्ततो गुरोः॥ शिरस्संक्षाल्य चाचम्य सवासाः क्षौरमाचरेत्॥ ३ ॥
guruM natvA vizeSeNa labdhAnujJastato guroH॥ zirassaMkSAlya cAcamya savAsAH kSauramAcaret॥ 3 ॥
He shall bow to the preceptor and secure permission from him. After washing the head and performing the Ācamana he shall have the tonsure while putting on cloth.

क्षालयेद्वसनं पश्चान्मृदम्भोभिः क्षुरादिकम्॥ तद्धस्तौ च मृदालिप्य क्षालयेति मृदं ददेत् ॥ ४ ॥
kSAlayedvasanaM pazcAnmRdambhobhiH kSurAdikam॥ taddhastau ca mRdAlipya kSAlayeti mRdaM dadet ॥ 4 ॥
After that he shall wash the cloth, the razor etc. with water and clay. The barber also shall be given clay and asked to wash his hands.

They placed it there and sprinkled it with water and chanted Shiva Shiva She closed her eyes and chanted the mantra with her thumb.

अस्त्रेणोन्मील्य संदृश्य क्षुरा दिक्षौ रसाधनम् ॥ अभिमन्त्र्य द्वादशाथ प्रोक्षयेदस्त्रमंत्रतः ॥ ६ ॥
astreNonmIlya saMdRzya kSurA dikSau rasAdhanam ॥ abhimantrya dvAdazAtha prokSayedastramaMtrataH ॥ 6 ॥
Opening the weapon he saw the razor in all directions After chanting the twelve mantras one should sprinkle the water with the mantra Astra.

क्षुरं गृहीत्वा तारेण दक्षभागे निकृन्तयेत् ॥ केशांश्च कांश्चि दग्रेषु वप्त्वा सर्वं च वापयेत् ॥ ७ ॥
kSuraM gRhItvA tAreNa dakSabhAge nikRntayet ॥ kezAMzca kAMzci dagreSu vaptvA sarvaM ca vApayet ॥ 7 ॥
He shall take the razor and cut off a patch of hair on the right side. Then a few hair on the front, then the entire hair shall be shaved off.

पृथिव्यां पर्णमादाय विक्षिपेन्न भुवः स्थले ॥ श्मश्रूणि हस्तपादस्थनखानि च निकृंतयेत् ॥ ८ ॥
pRthivyAM parNamAdAya vikSipenna bhuvaH sthale ॥ zmazrUNi hastapAdasthanakhAni ca nikRMtayet ॥ 8 ॥
The hair shaven off shall be put on a leaf and not allowed to fall on the ground. The beards, the moustache also shall be shaven. Nails of the hands and feet shall be pared.

बिल्वाश्वत्थतुलस्यादिस्थाने संगृह्य मृतिकाम् ॥ द्विषट्वारं निमज्याप्सु तीरं गत्वोपविश्य च ॥ ९ ॥
bilvAzvatthatulasyAdisthAne saMgRhya mRtikAm ॥ dviSaTvAraM nimajyApsu tIraM gatvopavizya ca ॥ 9 ॥
Placing the clay in the place of bilva, ashvattha, tulasi and other plants. He dipped himself in the water sixty times and went to the shore and sat down.

शुद्धे देशे तु संस्थाप्य मृदं त्रेधा विभज्य च ॥ एवम्पुनस्त्रिधा कृत्वा प्रोक्ष्यास्त्रेणाभिमन्त्रयेत् ॥ १० ॥
zuddhe deze tu saMsthApya mRdaM tredhA vibhajya ca ॥ evampunastridhA kRtvA prokSyAstreNAbhimantrayet ॥ 10 ॥
Place the clay in a clean place and divide it into three parts. Thus again one should divide it into three parts and sprinkle it with the weapon and chant the mantra.

तत्रैकां मृदमादाय दापयित्वान्यपाणिना ॥ करौ द्वादशधा लिप्य प्रत्येकं केन क्षालयेत् ॥ ११ ॥
tatraikAM mRdamAdAya dApayitvAnyapANinA ॥ karau dvAdazadhA lipya pratyekaM kena kSAlayet ॥ 11 ॥
Taking a lump of clay he shall wipe off his hands with it twelve times. Each of the hands shall be separately washed with water.

पुनरेकाम्पादयोश्च मुखे चान्यां करे क्रमात् ॥ संलिप्याक्षाल्य चाम्भोभिः पुनश्च जलमाविशेत् ॥ १२ ॥
punarekAmpAdayozca mukhe cAnyAM kare kramAt ॥ saMlipyAkSAlya cAmbhobhiH punazca jalamAvizet ॥ 12 ॥
Another lump of clay shall be used similarly for the feet, another lump for the face, another for the arms and so on. After smearing and washing he shall enter water again.

अन्यां मृदम्भागयित्वा शिरसि द्वादश क्रमात् ॥ आलिप्य मृदमास्यान्तनिमज्य च पुनः पुनः ॥ १३ ॥
anyAM mRdambhAgayitvA zirasi dvAdaza kramAt ॥ Alipya mRdamAsyAntanimajya ca punaH punaH ॥ 13 ॥
Another lump of clay shall be divided into twelve and applied over the beard. He shall then plunge into the water again.

तीरं गत्वा तु गंडूषान्षोडशाचमनं द्विधा ॥ प्राणानायम्य च पुनः प्रणवं द्व्यष्टसंख्यया ॥ १४ ॥
tIraM gatvA tu gaMDUSAnSoDazAcamanaM dvidhA ॥ prANAnAyamya ca punaH praNavaM dvyaSTasaMkhyayA ॥ 14 ॥
He shall come to the bank, gargle sixteen times, perform Ācamana twice and Prāṇāyāma sixteen times repeating the Praṇava.

मृदमन्यां पुनस्त्रेधा विभज्य च तदेकया ॥ कटिशौचं पादशौचं विधायाचम्य च द्विधा ॥ १५ ॥
mRdamanyAM punastredhA vibhajya ca tadekayA ॥ kaTizaucaM pAdazaucaM vidhAyAcamya ca dvidhA ॥ 15 ॥
He shall divide another lump of clay into three. With one part he shall purify the hips and feet and perform Ācamana twice.

प्रणवेनाथ षोडश प्राणानायम्य वाग्यतः ॥ पुनरन्यां स्वोरुदेशे त्रिधा विन्यस्य चोमिति ॥ १६ ॥
praNavenAtha SoDaza prANAnAyamya vAgyataH ॥ punaranyAM svorudeze tridhA vinyasya comiti ॥ 16 ॥
Repeating the Praṇava he shall perform Prāṇāyāma silently sixteen times. He shall take another part of the clay lump and apply it on his thighs thrice repeating “Om”.

प्रोक्ष्याभिमंत्रयेत्सप्त स्वपाण्योस्तलमेकधा ॥ त्रिधालिप्याथ सम्पश्येत्सूर्य्यमूर्तिं च पावनीम् ॥ १७ ॥
prokSyAbhimaMtrayetsapta svapANyostalamekadhA ॥ tridhAlipyAtha sampazyetsUryyamUrtiM ca pAvanIm ॥ 17 ॥
He shall sprinkle water over it repeating Om seven times. He shall apply the clay on the palms once in the beginning and thrice afterwards. Then he shall glance at the holy disc of the sun.

स्वकक्षयोः समालिप्य व्यत्यस्ताभ्यामथान्यया ॥ पाणिभ्याञ्च मृदा शिष्यस्सुमतिर्दृढमानसः ॥ १८ ॥
svakakSayoH samAlipya vyatyastAbhyAmathAnyayA ॥ pANibhyAJca mRdA ziSyassumatirdRDhamAnasaH ॥ 18 ॥
She wrapped herself in her rooms and then interrupted them with another. The disciple Sumati and firm in mind with clay in his hands.

गृहीत्वान्यां मृदं शुद्धां तथासौ गुरुभक्तिमान् ॥ शिर आरभ्य पादान्तं विलिप्यादित्यदृष्टया ॥ १९ ॥
gRhItvAnyAM mRdaM zuddhAM tathAsau gurubhaktimAn ॥ zira Arabhya pAdAntaM vilipyAdityadRSTayA ॥ 19 ॥
He took another piece of pure clay and was so devoted to his spiritual master. Starting from the head and smearing the ends of the feet with the sight of the sun.

समुत्थाय ततोऽसौ वै दण्डमादाय भूतले ॥ स्वगुरुं मन्त्रदम्भक्त्या संस्मरेज्ज्ञाननिष्ठया ॥ २० ॥
samutthAya tato'sau vai daNDamAdAya bhUtale ॥ svaguruM mantradambhaktyA saMsmarejjJAnaniSThayA ॥ 20 ॥
Fixing the staff on the ground he shall stand up and remember his preceptor who has taught him the mantra with devotion strengthened by wisdom.

ततस्साम्बं महेशानं शंकरं चन्द्रशेखरम्॥ संस्मरेद्भक्तितश्शिष्य सर्वेश्वर्यपतिं शिवम् ॥ २१ ॥
tatassAmbaM mahezAnaM zaMkaraM candrazekharam॥ saMsmaredbhaktitazziSya sarvezvaryapatiM zivam ॥ 21 ॥
He shall devoutly remember Sāmba, Maheśāna, Śaṅkara, the moon-crested Śiva, the lord of prosperity and glory.

त्रिवारम्प्रणमेत्प्रीत्या साष्टांगं च गुरु शिवम् ॥ पञ्चाङ्गेनैकवारञ्च समुत्थाय च वन्दयेत् ॥ २२ ॥
trivArampraNametprItyA sASTAMgaM ca guru zivam ॥ paJcAGgenaikavAraJca samutthAya ca vandayet ॥ 22 ॥
He shall prostrate before the preceptor Śiva thrice with eight limbs and once with five limbs touching the ground and stand up making obeisance.

तीर्थं प्रविश्य तन्मध्ये निमज्योन्मज्य ताम्मृदम् ॥ स्कन्धे संस्थाप्य पूर्वोक्तप्रकारेण विलेपयेत् ॥ २३ ॥
tIrthaM pravizya tanmadhye nimajyonmajya tAmmRdam ॥ skandhe saMsthApya pUrvoktaprakAreNa vilepayet ॥ 23 ॥
He shall enter the river again and plunge once. Coming up he shall apply the clay on the shoulders in the manner mentioned before.

तत्रावशिष्टं संगृह्य जलमध्ये प्रविश्य च ॥ विलोड्य सम्यक् तां तत्र सर्वांगेषु विलिप्य च ॥ २४ ॥
tatrAvaziSTaM saMgRhya jalamadhye pravizya ca ॥ viloDya samyak tAM tatra sarvAMgeSu vilipya ca ॥ 24 ॥
The remaining clay he shall take up and dissolve it in the water and then apply it all over his body.

त्रिवारमोमिति प्रोच्य शिवपादाम्बुजं स्मरन् ॥ संसाराम्बुधिसंतारं सदा यद्विधितो हि सः ॥ २५ ॥
trivAramomiti procya zivapAdAmbujaM smaran ॥ saMsArAmbudhisaMtAraM sadA yadvidhito hi saH ॥ 25 ॥
He shall repeat ‘Om’ thrice and remember the lotus-like feet of Śiva which enable him to cross the ocean of worldly existence.

अभिषिच्योमिति जलं विरजाभस्मलोलितम् ॥ अंगोपमार्ज्जनं कृत्वा सुस्नायाद्भस्मना ततः ॥ २६ ॥
abhiSicyomiti jalaM virajAbhasmalolitam ॥ aMgopamArjjanaM kRtvA susnAyAdbhasmanA tataH ॥ 26 ॥
Repeating Om he shall pour water over his body besmeared with the Bhasma of the Virajā Homa. He shall wipe the body, take his bath and apply Dharma.

त्रिपुंड्रं च विधायाथ यथोक्तविधिना शुभम् ॥ यथोक्तांगेषु सर्वेषु सावधान तया मुने ॥ २७ ॥
tripuMDraM ca vidhAyAtha yathoktavidhinA zubham ॥ yathoktAMgeSu sarveSu sAvadhAna tayA mune ॥ 27 ॥
O sage, then he shall carefully apply Tripuṇḍra in accordance with the rules.

ततश्शुद्धमना भूत्वा कुर्य्यान्मध्यंदिनक्रियाः ॥ महेश्वरं नमस्कृत्य गुरूंस्तीर्थादिकानि च ॥ २८ ॥
tatazzuddhamanA bhUtvA kuryyAnmadhyaMdinakriyAH ॥ mahezvaraM namaskRtya gurUMstIrthAdikAni ca ॥ 28 ॥
After paying obeisance to Maheśvara, the preceptors, holy centres and others he shall perform the midday rites.

सम्पूजयेन्महेशानं भक्त्या परमया मुने ॥ साम्बिकं ज्ञानदातारं पातारं त्रिभवस्य वै ॥ २९ ॥
sampUjayenmahezAnaM bhaktyA paramayA mune ॥ sAmbikaM jJAnadAtAraM pAtAraM tribhavasya vai ॥ 29 ॥
O sage, with great devotion he shall worship Śiva accompanied by Śivā and the bestower of perfect knowledge, the protector of the three worlds.

ततोसौ दृढचेतस्को यतिः स्ववृषसंस्थितः॥ भिक्षार्थम्प्रव्रजेच्छुद्धो विप्रवर्गेषु साधुषु॥ ३०॥
tatosau dRDhacetasko yatiH svavRSasaMsthitaH॥ bhikSArthampravrajecchuddho vipravargeSu sAdhuSu॥ 30॥
With steady mind, abiding by his virtuous duties and pure in body, he shall go to good brahmin householders for alms.

ततस्तत्र च शुद्धात्मा पञ्चधा परिकल्पितम्॥ भैक्ष्यं यथोचितं कुर्य्याद्दूषितान्नं विवर्ज्जयेत् ॥ ३१ ॥
tatastatra ca zuddhAtmA paJcadhA parikalpitam॥ bhaikSyaM yathocitaM kuryyAddUSitAnnaM vivarjjayet ॥ 31 ॥
He shall divide the alms into five parts and do with them as proper. He shall avoid defiled food.

शौचं स्नानं तथा भिक्षां नित्यमेकान्तसेवनम् ॥ भिक्षौश्चत्वारि कर्म्माणि पञ्चमं नैव विद्यते ॥ ३२ ॥
zaucaM snAnaM tathA bhikSAM nityamekAntasevanam ॥ bhikSauzcatvAri karmmANi paJcamaM naiva vidyate ॥ 32 ॥
A mendicant shall perform four activities: Purificatory rites, ablution, begging for alms and resorting to isolated places for meditation. He has no fifth rite.

अलाबुं वेणुपात्रं च दारवम्मृण्मयन्तथा ॥ भिक्षोश्चत्त्वारि पात्राणि पञ्चमन्नैव विद्यते ॥ ३३ ॥
alAbuM veNupAtraM ca dAravammRNmayantathA ॥ bhikSozcattvAri pAtrANi paJcamannaiva vidyate ॥ 33 ॥
He shall use only four types of begging bowls, that made of dried gourd, or of bamboo, or of wood or of clay. He shall not take any other type of bowl.

ताम्बूलं तैजसम्पात्रं रेतस्सेकं सितांबरम् ॥ दिवास्वापो हि नक्तान्नं यतीनां षड्विवर्जिताः ॥ ३४ ॥
tAmbUlaM taijasampAtraM retassekaM sitAMbaram ॥ divAsvApo hi naktAnnaM yatInAM SaDvivarjitAH ॥ 34 ॥
Six things are forbidden to the ascetics: chewing the betel, using the metallic vessel, emission of semen, white cloth, sleeping during the day and taking meal at night.

साक्षरा विपरीताश्च राक्षसास्त इति स्मृताः॥ तस्माद्वै विपरीतं च कर्म्म नैवाचरेद्यतिः॥ ३५ ॥
sAkSarA viparItAzca rAkSasAsta iti smRtAH॥ tasmAdvai viparItaM ca karmma naivAcaredyatiH॥ 35 ॥
If they observe the rules they are wise. If they do not they are Rākṣasas. The ascetic shall never indulge in activities contrary to the rules.

यतिः प्रयत्नतः कुर्य्यात्क्षौरस्नानं च शुद्धये ॥ संस्मरन्मनसा शुद्धं परं ब्रह्म सदाशिवम् ॥ ३६ ॥
yatiH prayatnataH kuryyAtkSaurasnAnaM ca zuddhaye ॥ saMsmaranmanasA zuddhaM paraM brahma sadAzivam ॥ 36 ॥
He shall perform the post-shaving ablution assiduously for purity, remembering mentally the supreme Brahman Sadāśiva.

इत्यैव मुनिशार्द्दूल तव स्नेहान्मयाखिलः ॥ क्षौरस्नानविधिः प्रोक्तः किम्भूयः श्रोतुमिच्छसि ॥ ३७ ॥
ityaiva munizArddUla tava snehAnmayAkhilaH ॥ kSaurasnAnavidhiH proktaH kimbhUyaH zrotumicchasi ॥ 37 ॥
O sage, thus out of affection for you, the rites of post-shaving ablution I have explained to you. What else do you wish to hear?
