The meaning of the statement—“Perfect knowledge is Brahman” has already been made known. Parameśvara the Śakti-soul is the meaning of the word Aham.

अकारः सर्ववर्णाग्र्यः प्रकाशः परमः शिवः ॥ हकारो व्योमरूपः स्याच्छक्त्यात्मा संप्रकीर्तितः ॥ २ ॥
akAraH sarvavarNAgryaH prakAzaH paramaH zivaH ॥ hakAro vyomarUpaH syAcchaktyAtmA saMprakIrtitaH ॥ 2 ॥
‘A’ is the foremost among all letters. It is the greatest splendour ‘Śiva’. The letter ‘Ha’ is of the form of firmament. It is glorified as the Śakti-soul.

शिवशक्त्योस्तु संयोगादानन्दः सततोदितः ॥ ब्रह्मेति शिवशक्त्योस्तु सर्वात्मत्वमिति स्फुटम् ॥ ३ ॥
zivazaktyostu saMyogAdAnandaH satatoditaH ॥ brahmeti zivazaktyostu sarvAtmatvamiti sphuTam ॥ 3 ॥
Bliss is ever-rising due to the union of Śiva and Śakti. The word Brahman indicates the state of being Ātman of all, of Śiva and Śakti.

पूर्वमेवोपदिष्टं तत्सोहमस्मीति भावयेत् ॥ तत्त्वमित्यत्र तदिति सशब्दार्थः प्रबोधितः॥ ४ ॥
pUrvamevopadiSTaM tatsohamasmIti bhAvayet ॥ tattvamityatra taditi sazabdArthaH prabodhitaH॥ 4 ॥
That has been taught before. The devotee shall meditate “I am he” “That you are;” in this the meaning of “That” has already been explained.

अन्यथा सोऽहमित्यत्र विपरीतार्थभावना ॥ अहंशब्दस्तु पुरुषस्तदिति स्यान्नपुंसकम्॥ एवमन्योन्यवैरुध्यादन्वयो नभवेत्तयोः ॥ ५ ॥
anyathA so'hamityatra viparItArthabhAvanA ॥ ahaMzabdastu puruSastaditi syAnnapuMsakam॥ evamanyonyavairudhyAdanvayo nabhavettayoH ॥ 5 ॥
Otherwise, in that I am, there is a feeling of the opposite meaning. The word ego, however, is the male and that is the neuter. Thus, because of their mutual contradiction, there is no consequence between the two.

स्त्रीपुंरूपस्य जगतः कारणं चान्यथा भवेत् ॥ स तत्त्वमसि इत्येवमुपदेशार्थभावना ॥ ६ ॥
strIpuMrUpasya jagataH kAraNaM cAnyathA bhavet ॥ sa tattvamasi ityevamupadezArthabhAvanA ॥ 6 ॥
The cause of the world in the form of men and women would be otherwise That is the truth, thus the feeling of the meaning of instruction.

अयमात्मेति वाक्ये च पुंरूपं पदयुग्मकम् ॥ ईशेन रक्षणीयत्वादीशावस्यमिदं जगत् ॥ ७ ॥
ayamAtmeti vAkye ca puMrUpaM padayugmakam ॥ Izena rakSaNIyatvAdIzAvasyamidaM jagat ॥ 7 ॥
In the statement “This Ātman is Brahman” both the words are in the masculine. All this worthy of protection is pervaded by the lord.

प्रज्ञानात्मा यदेवेह तदमुत्रेति चिन्तयेत् ॥ यः स एवेति विद्वद्भिस्सिद्धान्तिभिरिहोच्यते ॥ ८ ॥
prajJAnAtmA yadeveha tadamutreti cintayet ॥ yaH sa eveti vidvadbhissiddhAntibhirihocyate ॥ 8 ॥
The self of wisdom should think that whatever is in this world is in the next. It is here said by the learned and the Siddhantas that He is the same.

उपरिस्थितवाक्ये च योऽमुत्र स इह स्थितः ॥ इति पूर्ववदेवार्थः पुरुषो विदुषां मतः ॥ ९ ॥
uparisthitavAkye ca yo'mutra sa iha sthitaH ॥ iti pUrvavadevArthaH puruSo viduSAM mataH ॥ 9 ॥
And in the above statement he who is here is here. This is the meaning of the Purusha as before, according to the learned.

अन्यदेव तद्विदितादथो ॥ अविदितादपि ॥ अस्मिन्वाक्ये फलस्यापि वैपरीत्यविभावना ॥ १० ॥
anyadeva tadviditAdatho ॥ aviditAdapi ॥ asminvAkye phalasyApi vaiparItyavibhAvanA ॥ 10 ॥
Another god is that known. Even from the unknown. In this statement there is no idea of the opposite of the fruit.

O sage I shall tell you here as it happens Listen to me The word unknown is known as before.

प्रवृत्तिस्स्यात्तद्विदितात्तथैवाविदितात्परम् ॥ अन्यदेव हि संसिद्ध्यै न भवेदिति निश्चितम् ॥ १२ ॥
pravRttissyAttadviditAttathaivAviditAtparam ॥ anyadeva hi saMsiddhyai na bhavediti nizcitam ॥ 12 ॥
Instinct is from what is known and also from what is beyond the unknown. It is certain that no other god can be used for perfection.

eSa ta AtmAMtaryAmI yo'mRtazca zivassvayam ॥ yazcAyampuruSe zaMbhuryazcAditye vyavasthitaH ॥ 13 ॥
This is that innermost Self who is immortal and Shiva Himself. He who is situated in the Purusha and who is situated in the Sun.

स चाऽसौ सेति पार्थक्यं नैकं सर्वं स ईरितः ॥ सोपाधिद्वयमस्यार्थ उपचारात्तथोच्यते ॥ १४ ॥
sa cA'sau seti pArthakyaM naikaM sarvaM sa IritaH ॥ sopAdhidvayamasyArtha upacArAttathocyate ॥ 14 ॥
That and that is the difference between that and that is not one and that is all that is said. The two co-titles are so called because of the treatment of this meaning.

तं शम्भुनाथं श्रुतयो वदन्ति हि हिरण्मयम् ॥ हिरण्य बाहव इति सर्वांगस्यो पलक्षलम् ॥ १५ ॥
taM zambhunAthaM zrutayo vadanti hi hiraNmayam ॥ hiraNya bAhava iti sarvAMgasyo palakSalam ॥ 15 ॥
The Vedas describe him as the golden lord of Lord Śambhu Hiranya Bahava is the palaksha of all the limbs.

अन्यथा तत्पतित्वं तु न भवेदिति यत्नतः ॥ य एषोन्तरिति शंभुश्छान्दोग्ये श्रूयते शिवः ॥ १६ ॥
anyathA tatpatitvaM tu na bhavediti yatnataH ॥ ya eSontariti zaMbhuzchAndogye zrUyate zivaH ॥ 16 ॥
Otherwise he would not become her husband He who is this intermediate is Śambhu and is heard in the Chāndogya as Śiva.

हिरण्यश्मश्रुवांस्तद्वद्धिरण्यमयकेशवान् ॥ नखमारभ्य केशाग्रा सर्वत्रापि हिरण्मयः ॥ १७ ॥
hiraNyazmazruvAMstadvaddhiraNyamayakezavAn ॥ nakhamArabhya kezAgrA sarvatrApi hiraNmayaH ॥ 17 ॥
He had golden stone ears and golden hair From the nails to the tips of the hair, everywhere is golden.

I shall tell you me purport of the statement “I am the great Brahman”. Please listen.

अहंपदस्यार्थभूतः शक्त्यात्मा शिवईरितः ॥ स एवास्मीति वाक्यार्थ योजना भवति ध्रुवम् ॥ १९ ॥
ahaMpadasyArthabhUtaH zaktyAtmA zivaIritaH ॥ sa evAsmIti vAkyArtha yojanA bhavati dhruvam ॥ 19 ॥
The meaning of ‘Aham’ is Śakti-soul. Śiva is indicated thereby. “I am he alone”. The statement can be construed thus.

सर्वोत्कृष्टश्च सर्वात्मा परब्रह्म स ईरितः ॥ परश्चाथापरश्चेति परात्परमिति त्रिधा ॥ २० ॥
sarvotkRSTazca sarvAtmA parabrahma sa IritaH ॥ parazcAthAparazceti parAtparamiti tridhA ॥ 20 ॥
He is described as the Supreme Brahman, the all-exalted and all-pervading Soul. There are three kinds of beings, the other and the other, the other and the other.

रुद्रो ब्रह्मा च विष्णुश्च प्रोक्ताः श्रुत्यैव नान्यथा ॥ तेभ्यश्च परमो देवः परशब्देन बोधितः ॥ २१ ॥
rudro brahmA ca viSNuzca proktAH zrutyaiva nAnyathA ॥ tebhyazca paramo devaH parazabdena bodhitaH ॥ 21 ॥
Rudra Brahma and Vishnu are mentioned in the Vedas and nothing else The word para means the Supreme Lord to them.

वेदशास्त्र गुरूणां च वाक्याभ्या सवशाच्छिशोः ॥ पूर्णानन्दमयश्शंभुः प्रादुर्भूतो भवेद्धृदि ॥ २२ ॥
vedazAstra gurUNAM ca vAkyAbhyA savazAcchizoH ॥ pUrNAnandamayazzaMbhuH prAdurbhUto bhaveddhRdi ॥ 22 ॥
By pondering over and practising the words of the Vedas, Śāstras and the preceptor, Śiva, the blissful lord appears in the heart of the pupil.

सर्वभूतस्थितश्शम्भुस्स एवाहं न संशयः ॥ तत्त्वजातस्य सर्वस्य प्राणोस्म्यहमहं शिवः ॥ २३ ॥
sarvabhUtasthitazzambhussa evAhaM na saMzayaH ॥ tattvajAtasya sarvasya prANosmyahamahaM zivaH ॥ 23 ॥
Śiva is stationed in all living beings. Undoubtedly I am he. I am the vital breath of all the Taitvas. I am Śiva.

इत्युक्त्वा पुनरप्याह शिवस्तत्त्वत्रयस्य च ॥ प्राणोस्मीत्यत्र पृथ्व्यादिगुणान्तग्रहणान्मुने ॥ २४ ॥
ityuktvA punarapyAha zivastattvatrayasya ca ॥ prANosmItyatra pRthvyAdiguNAntagrahaNAnmune ॥ 24 ॥
Having said this Lord Śiva again addressed the three elements O sage, by grasping the end of the earth and other modes of nature, I am the life-force.

AtmatattvAni sarvANi gRhItAnIti bhAvaya ॥ punazca sarvagrahaNaM vidyAtattvazivAtmanoH ॥ 25 ॥
Feel that you have grasped all the elements of the Self. Again the grasp of all is the essence of knowledge and the Self of Shiva.

तत्त्वयोश्चास्म्यहं प्राणास्सर्वस्स्सर्वात्मको ह्यहम् ॥ जीवस्य चान्तर्यामित्वाज्जीवोऽहं तस्य सर्वदा ॥ २६ ॥
tattvayozcAsmyahaM prANAssarvasssarvAtmako hyaham ॥ jIvasya cAntaryAmitvAjjIvo'haM tasya sarvadA ॥ 26 ॥
I am the life-force in both the elements and I am all-pervading. And because I am the innermost being of the living being, I am always his living being.

yadbhUtaM yacca bhavyaM yadbhavipyatsarvameva ca ॥ manmayatvAdahaM sarvaH sarvo vai rudra ityapi ॥ 27 ॥
What is past, what is yet to be, what is present-all these are identical with me. Hence I am all. All is Rudra.

श्रुतिराह मुने सा हि साक्षाच्छिवमुखोद्गता ॥ सर्वात्मा परमैरेभिर्गुणैर्नित्यसमन्वयात् ॥ २८ ॥
zrutirAha mune sA hi sAkSAcchivamukhodgatA ॥ sarvAtmA paramairebhirguNairnityasamanvayAt ॥ 28 ॥
O sage, the Śruti says that it has originated from Śiva’s mouth. “I am the soul of all”, because the great qualities are ever present in me.

स्वस्मात्परात्मविरहादद्वितीयोऽहमेव हि ॥ सर्वं खल्विदं ब्रह्मेति वाक्यार्थः पूर्व्वमीरितः ॥ २९ ॥
svasmAtparAtmavirahAdadvitIyo'hameva hi ॥ sarvaM khalvidaM brahmeti vAkyArthaH pUrvvamIritaH ॥ 29 ॥
“I am without a second” because there is no other Ātman distinct from the self. The statement “indeed all this is Brahman” has been explained before.

पूर्णोऽहं भावरूपत्वान्नित्यमुक्तोऽहमेव हि ॥ पशवो मत्प्रसादेन मुक्ता मद्भावमाश्रिताः ॥ ३० ॥
pUrNo'haM bhAvarUpatvAnnityamukto'hameva hi ॥ pazavo matprasAdena muktA madbhAvamAzritAH ॥ 30 ॥
I am complete because of my positive aspect. I am ever liberated. All the souls resorting to my nature are liberated due to my grace.

योऽसौ सर्वात्मकश्शम्भुस्सोऽहं स शिवोऽस्म्यहम् ॥ इति वै सर्ववाक्यार्थो वामदेव शिवोदितः ॥ ३१ ॥
yo'sau sarvAtmakazzambhusso'haM sa zivo'smyaham ॥ iti vai sarvavAkyArtho vAmadeva zivoditaH ॥ 31 ॥
“I am he who is Śiva, the soul of all and identical with all. I am Haṃsa. I am Śiva.” This is the meaning of all statements, O Vāmadeva, as mentioned by Śiva.

इतीशश्रुतिवाक्याभ्यामुपदिष्टार्थमादरात् ॥ साक्षाच्छिवैक्यदं पुंसां शिशोगुरुरुपादिशेत् ॥ ३२ ॥
itIzazrutivAkyAbhyAmupadiSTArthamAdarAt ॥ sAkSAcchivaikyadaM puMsAM zizogururupAdizet ॥ 32 ॥
The preceptor shall communicate to the pupil the meaning as declared by Śiva and explained in the Vedīc passages. It establishes the identity of men with Śiva Himself.

आदाय शंखं साधारमस्त्रमन्त्रेण भस्मना ॥ शोध्य तत्पुरतस्स्थाप्य चतुरस्रे समर्चिते ॥ ३३ ॥
AdAya zaMkhaM sAdhAramastramantreNa bhasmanA ॥ zodhya tatpuratassthApya caturasre samarcite ॥ 33 ॥
He shall then take the conch with the pedestal and purify it with Bhasma and the Astra mantra. He shall put it before the disciple on the square and worship it.

ओमित्यभ्यर्च्य गन्धाद्यैरस्त्रं वस्त्रोपशोभितम् ॥ वासितं जलमापूर्य सम्पूज्योमिति मन्त्रतः ॥ ३४ ॥
omityabhyarcya gandhAdyairastraM vastropazobhitam ॥ vAsitaM jalamApUrya sampUjyomiti mantrataH ॥ 34 ॥
He shall worship it with scents repeating Om. It shall be filled with scented water invoked by Astra mantra and filtered with a cloth. It shall be worshipped with the Praṇava Om.

सप्तधैवाभिमंत्र्याथ प्रणवेन पुनश्च तम् ॥ यस्त्वन्तरं किंचिदस्ति कुरुते त्यतिभीतिभाक् ॥ ३५ ॥
saptadhaivAbhimaMtryAtha praNavena punazca tam ॥ yastvantaraM kiMcidasti kurute tyatibhItibhAk ॥ 35 ॥
Then he chanted the sevenfold mantra and again chanted the oṁkāra. He who makes any difference is very afraid.

ityAha zrutisattattvaM dRDhAtmA gatabhIrbhava ॥ ityAbhASya svayaM ziSyaM devaM dhyAyansamarcayet ॥ 36 ॥
इत्याह श्रुतिसत्तत्त्वं दृढात्मा गतभीर्भव ॥ इत्याभाष्य स्वयं शिष्यं देवं ध्यायन्समर्चयेत् ॥ ३६ ॥

शिष्यासनं सम्प्रपूज्य षडुत्थापनमार्गतः ॥ शिवासनं च संकल्प्य शिवमूर्तिं प्रकल्पयेत् ॥ ३७ ॥
ziSyAsanaM samprapUjya SaDutthApanamArgataH ॥ zivAsanaM ca saMkalpya zivamUrtiM prakalpayet ॥ 37 ॥
He shall worship the seat, of the disciple with the rite of “Ṣaḍutthāpana.” After conceiving Śiva’s seat he shall install an idol of Śiva.

पञ्च ब्रह्माणि विन्यस्य शिरः पादावसानकम् ॥ मुण्डवत्क्रकलाभेदैः प्रणवस्य कला अपि ॥ ३८ ॥
paJca brahmANi vinyasya ziraH pAdAvasAnakam ॥ muNDavatkrakalAbhedaiH praNavasya kalA api ॥ 38 ॥
Placing the five Brahmans on the head and the ends of the feet The arts of the oṁkāra are also different from the arts of the muṇḍavatkra.

अष्टत्रिंशन्मंत्ररूपा श्शिष्यदेहेऽथ मस्तके ॥ समावाह्य शिवं मुद्राः स्थापनीयाः प्रदर्शयेत् ॥ ३९ ॥
aSTatriMzanmaMtrarUpA zziSyadehe'tha mastake ॥ samAvAhya zivaM mudrAH sthApanIyAH pradarzayet ॥ 39 ॥
They are in the form of thirty-eight mantras on the body of the disciple and then on the head. Invoke Shiva and display the mudras to be placed.

ततश्चाङ्गानि विन्यस्य सर्वज्ञानीत्यनुक्रमात्॥ कल्पयेदुपचारांश्च षोडशासनपूर्वकान् ॥ ४० ॥

Eschew the faults of lust etc. and be devoted to meditation on Śiva. Associate with those who have inherited good tradition and not with others.

Till the end of your life never take food without worshipping Śiva. Abiding by your devotion to the preceptor be happy, be happy.”
