vAmadeva uvAca ॥ niyatyadhastAtprakRteruparisthaH pumAniti ॥ pUrvatra bhavatA proktamidAnIM kathamanyathA॥ 1 ॥
Vamdeva said. From below destiny, the man is above nature. You told me earlier how can it be otherwise now.

mAyayA saMkucadrUpastadadhastAditi prabho ॥ iti me saMzayaM nAtha chettumarhasi tattvataH ॥ 2 ॥
By his illusory power the form shrank from below, O Lord. O lord you should really dispel my doubt about this.

zrIsubahmaNya uvAca ॥ advaitazaivavAdo'yaM dvaitanna sahate kvacit ॥ dvaitaM ca nazvaraM brahmAdvaitamparamanazvaram ॥ 3 ॥
Subrahmaṇya said:— This is the Śaivite philosophy of non-dualism. Nowhere does it brook duality. Duality perishes and the non-dualism remains imperishable.

सर्वज्ञस्सर्वकर्ता च शिवस्सर्वेश्वरोऽगुणः ॥ त्रिदेवजनको ब्रह्मा सच्चिदानन्दविग्रहः ॥ ४ ॥
sarvajJassarvakartA ca zivassarvezvaro'guNaH ॥ tridevajanako brahmA saccidAnandavigrahaH ॥ 4 ॥
The omniscient, omnipotent, Śiva, the Nirguṇa lord of all, the progenitor of the three deities, the Brahman, is formed of existence-knowledge-bliss.

sa eva zaMkaro devassvecchayA ca svamAyayA ॥ saMkucadrUpa iva sanpuruSassaMbabhUva ha ॥ 5 ॥
That lord Śiva himself, out of his own will, through his own Māyā appears shrinking in size and becomes Puruṣa.

कलादि पञ्चकेनैव भोक्तृत्वेन प्रकल्पितः ॥ प्रकृतिस्थः पुमानेष भुङ्क्ते प्रकृतिजान्गुणान् ॥ ६ ॥
kalAdi paJcakenaiva bhoktRtvena prakalpitaH ॥ prakRtisthaH pumAneSa bhuGkte prakRtijAnguNAn ॥ 6 ॥
He is conceived as the enjoyer through the set of five—Kalās etc. Thus the Puruṣa stationed in Prakṛti enjoys the Guṇas born of Prakṛti.

इति स्थानद्वयान्तस्थः पुरुषो न विरोधकः ॥ संकुचन्निजरूपाणां ज्ञानादीनां समष्टिमान् ॥ ७ ॥
iti sthAnadvayAntasthaH puruSo na virodhakaH ॥ saMkucannijarUpANAM jJAnAdInAM samaSTimAn ॥ 7 ॥
The presence in two places of the Puruṣa is not incompatible. He is the composite of Jñana etc. of both shrinking and intrinsic forms.

सत्त्वादिगुणसाध्यं च बुध्यादित्रितयात्मकम्॥ चित्तम्प्रकृतितत्त्वं तदासीत्सत्त्वादिकारणात् ॥ ८ ॥
sattvAdiguNasAdhyaM ca budhyAditritayAtmakam॥ cittamprakRtitattvaM tadAsItsattvAdikAraNAt ॥ 8 ॥
It is also achievable by the modes of Sattva and others and consists of the threefold intelligence and others. The mind was then the essence of nature because of the causes of Sattva and others.

सात्त्विकादिविभेदेन गुणाः प्रकृतिसम्भवाः ॥ गुणेभ्यो बुद्धिरुत्पन्ना वस्तुनिश्चयकारिणी ॥ ९ ॥
sAttvikAdivibhedena guNAH prakRtisambhavAH ॥ guNebhyo buddhirutpannA vastunizcayakAriNI ॥ 9 ॥
The modes of nature are produced by the distinction of the sattvic and others. Intelligence arises from the modes of nature and determines objects.

ततो महानहङ्कारस्ततो बुद्धीन्द्रियाणि च ॥ जातानि मनसो रूपं स्यात्संकल्पविकल्पकम् ॥ १० ॥
tato mahAnahaGkArastato buddhIndriyANi ca ॥ jAtAni manaso rUpaM syAtsaMkalpavikalpakam ॥ 10 ॥
From Buddhi the principle of intellect is born and from it ego. From the ego the sense-organs of knowledge. The mind has two aspects—thought and doubt.

बुद्धीन्द्रियाणि श्रोत्रं त्वक् चक्षुर्जिह्वा च नासिका ॥ शब्दः स्पर्शश्च रूपं च रसो गन्धश्च गोचरः ॥ ११ ॥
buddhIndriyANi zrotraM tvak cakSurjihvA ca nAsikA ॥ zabdaH sparzazca rUpaM ca raso gandhazca gocaraH ॥ 11 ॥
The intellect, the senses, the ear, the skin, the eyes, the tongue and the nose. Sound, touch, form, taste and smell are perceivable.

बुद्धीन्द्रियाणां कथितः श्रोत्रादिक्रमतस्ततः ॥ वैकारिकादहंकारात्तन्मात्राण्यभवन्क्रमात् ॥ १२ ॥
buddhIndriyANAM kathitaH zrotrAdikramatastataH ॥ vaikArikAdahaMkArAttanmAtrANyabhavankramAt ॥ 12 ॥
Then it is described in order of the intellect and the senses, beginning with the ear. From the transformational ego the elements gradually emerged.

tAni proktAni sUkSmANi munibhi stattvadarzibhiH ॥ karmendriyANi jJeyAni svakAryyasahitAni ca ॥ 13 ॥
They are called subtle principles by the sages. Now understand the organs of activity and their functions.

विप्रर्षे वाक्करौ पादौ पायूपस्थौ च तत्क्रियाः ॥ वचनादानगमनविसर्ग्गानन्दसंज्ञिताः॥ १४ ॥
viprarSe vAkkarau pAdau pAyUpasthau ca tatkriyAH ॥ vacanAdAnagamanavisarggAnandasaMjJitAH॥ 14 ॥
O sage, they are the organs of speech, hand, feet, anus, penis and the vaginal passage. Their functions are speaking, handling, moving, evacuation and the sexual pleasure.

भूतादिकादहंकारात्तन्मात्राण्यभवन्क्रमात्॥ तानि सूक्ष्माणि रूपाणी शब्दादीनामिति स्थितिः॥ १५ ॥
bhUtAdikAdahaMkArAttanmAtrANyabhavankramAt॥ tAni sUkSmANi rUpANI zabdAdInAmiti sthitiH॥ 15 ॥
The subtle elements originated in order from the ego, are the cause of the elements. Their subtle forms are sound etc.

तेभ्यश्चाकाशवाय्वग्निजलभूमिजनिः क्रमात् ॥ विज्ञेया मुनिशार्दूल पञ्चभूतमितीष्यते ॥ १६ ॥
tebhyazcAkAzavAyvagnijalabhUmijaniH kramAt ॥ vijJeyA munizArdUla paJcabhUtamitISyate ॥ 16 ॥
From them are born in order the ether, wind, fire, water and the earth. O sage, they are known as the five elements.

अवकाशप्रदानं च वाहकत्वञ्च पावनम् ॥ संरम्भो धारणन्तेषां व्यापाराः परिकीर्तिताः ॥ १७ ॥
avakAzapradAnaM ca vAhakatvaJca pAvanam ॥ saMrambho dhAraNanteSAM vyApArAH parikIrtitAH ॥ 17 ॥
Their functions are giving space, blowing, cooking, force and supporting.

वामदेव उवाच ॥ भूतसृष्टिः पुरा प्रोक्ता कलादिभ्यः कथम्पुनः ॥ अन्यथा प्रोच्यते स्कन्द संदेहोऽत्र महान्मम ॥ १८ ॥
vAmadeva uvAca ॥ bhUtasRSTiH purA proktA kalAdibhyaH kathampunaH ॥ anyathA procyate skanda saMdeho'tra mahAnmama ॥ 18 ॥
Vāmadeva said:— O Skanda, you have mentioned before that the elements were created from Kalās etc. How is it that it is being mentioned in another manner? I have great doubt here.

आत्मतत्त्वमकारस्स्याद्विद्या स्यादुस्ततः परम् ॥ शिवतत्त्वम्मकारस्स्याद्वामदेवेति चिंत्यताम् ॥ १९ ॥
AtmatattvamakArassyAdvidyA syAdustataH param ॥ zivatattvammakArassyAdvAmadeveti ciMtyatAm ॥ 19 ॥
“The letter ‘A’ is the Ātmatattva; the letter ‘U’ is ‘Vidyā’; the letter ‘Ma’ is Śivatattva. O Vāmadeva let this be thought over thus.

bindunAdau tu vijJeyau sarvatattvArthakAvubhau॥ tatratyA devatAyAzca tA mune zRNu sAmpratam॥ 20॥
“The Bindu and Nāda have essence of all the principles. O sage, listen now to what the deities therein arc.

ब्रह्मा विष्णुश्च रुद्रश्च महेश्वरसदाशिवौ ॥ ते हि साक्षाच्छिवस्यैव मूर्तयः श्रुतिविश्रुताः ॥ २१ ॥
brahmA viSNuzca rudrazca mahezvarasadAzivau ॥ te hi sAkSAcchivasyaiva mUrtayaH zrutivizrutAH ॥ 21 ॥
They are Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Rudra, Maheśvara and Sadāśiva. They are the images of Śiva himself well known in the Vedas.

इत्युक्तम्भवता पूर्वमिदानीमुच्यतेऽन्यथा ॥ तन्मात्रेभ्यो भवन्तीति सन्देहोऽत्र महान्मम ॥ २२ ॥
ityuktambhavatA pUrvamidAnImucyate'nyathA ॥ tanmAtrebhyo bhavantIti sandeho'tra mahAnmama ॥ 22 ॥
This is what you have said before. Now you say in another manner that they are born of the subtle elements. I have a great doubt in this matter.

कृत्वा तत्करुणां स्कन्द संशयं छेत्तुमर्हसि ॥ इत्याकर्ण्य मुनेर्वाक्यं कुमारः प्रत्यभाषत ॥ २३ ॥
kRtvA tatkaruNAM skanda saMzayaM chettumarhasi ॥ ityAkarNya munervAkyaM kumAraH pratyabhASata ॥ 23 ॥
Therefore, O Skanda, it behoves you to favour me by clearing the doubt. On hearing the words of the sage, Kumāra replied thus.

zrIsubrahmaNya uvAca ॥ tasmAdveti samArabhya bhUtasRSTikrame mune ॥ tAJchRNuSva mahAprAjJa sAvadhAnatayA da rAt ॥ 24 ॥
Śrī Subrahmanya said: Therefore, O sage, in the order of creation of beings, beginning with Veti. O greatly intelligent one, please hear them carefully from the door.

जातानि पञ्च भूतानि कलाभ्य इति निश्चितम्॥ स्थूलप्रपञ्चरूपाणि तानि भूतपतेर्वपुः ॥ २५ ॥
jAtAni paJca bhUtAni kalAbhya iti nizcitam॥ sthUlaprapaJcarUpANi tAni bhUtapatervapuH ॥ 25 ॥
It is certain that the five beings are born from the arts. Those forms of the gross world are the bodies of the Lord of the ghosts.

zivatattvAdi pRthvyantaM tattvAnAmudayakrame॥ tanmAtrebhyo bhavantIti vaktavyAni kramAnmune॥ 26 ॥
In the order of the rise of the elements beginning with the elements of Shiva and ending with the earth. O sage these should be said in order that they are from the elements.

तन्मात्राणां कलानामप्यैक्यं स्याद्भूतकारणम्॥ अविरुद्धत्व मेवात्र विद्धि ब्रह्माविदांवर ॥ २७ ॥
tanmAtrANAM kalAnAmapyaikyaM syAdbhUtakAraNam॥ aviruddhatva mevAtra viddhi brahmAvidAMvara ॥ 27 ॥
There shall be identity between the subtle elements and the Kalās as causes of the Bhūtas. O excellent among those who know the Brahman, know that there is no mutual antagonism here.

स्थूलसूक्ष्मात्मके विश्वे चन्द्रसूर्य्यादयो ग्रहाः ॥ सनक्षत्राश्च संजातास्तथान्ये ज्योतिषां गणाः ॥ २८ ॥
sthUlasUkSmAtmake vizve candrasUryyAdayo grahAH ॥ sanakSatrAzca saMjAtAstathAnye jyotiSAM gaNAH ॥ 28 ॥
In the cosmos both subtle and gross are born the planets: moon, sun stars, etc.

ब्रह्मविष्णुमहेशादिदेवता भूतजातयः ॥ इन्द्रादयोऽपि दिक्पाला देवाश्च पितरोऽसुराः ॥ २९ ॥
brahmaviSNumahezAdidevatA bhUtajAtayaH ॥ indrAdayo'pi dikpAlA devAzca pitaro'surAH ॥ 29 ॥
Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh and other demigods are the species of beings. Indra and others are the guardians of the directions and the devas and the forefathers and the asuras.

राक्षसा मानुषाश्चान्ये जंगमत्वविभागिनः ॥ पशवः पक्षिणः कीटाः पन्नगादि प्रभेदिनः ॥ ३० ॥
rAkSasA mAnuSAzcAnye jaMgamatvavibhAginaH ॥ pazavaH pakSiNaH kITAH pannagAdi prabhedinaH ॥ 30 ॥
Other demons and humans are divided into movable beings Animals birds insects snakes and other creatures.

तरुगुल्मलतौषध्यः पर्वताश्चाष्ट विश्रुताः ॥ गंगाद्यास्सरितस्सप्त सागराश्च महर्द्धयः ॥ ३१ ॥
tarugulmalatauSadhyaH parvatAzcASTa vizrutAH ॥ gaMgAdyAssaritassapta sAgarAzca maharddhayaH ॥ 31 ॥
There are eight famous trees shrubs herbs and mountains The rivers like the Ganges and the seven oceans are very rich.

यत्किंचिद्वस्तुजातन्तत्सर्वमत्र प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥ विचारणीयं सद्बुध्या न बहिर्मुनिसत्तम ॥ ३२ ॥
yatkiMcidvastujAtantatsarvamatra pratiSThitam ॥ vicAraNIyaM sadbudhyA na bahirmunisattama ॥ 32 ॥
Everything that is born of an object is established here O best of sages it should be considered with good intelligence and not outside.

स्त्रीपुंरूपमिदं विश्वं शिवशक्त्यात्मकं बुधैः ॥ भवादृशैरुपास्यं स्याच्छिवज्ञानविशारदैः ॥ ३३ ॥
strIpuMrUpamidaM vizvaM zivazaktyAtmakaM budhaiH ॥ bhavAdRzairupAsyaM syAcchivajJAnavizAradaiH ॥ 33 ॥
This universe of the form of female and male, of the form of Śiva and Śakti shall deserve attention of learned men like you, experts in the Śaiva knowledge.

सर्वं ब्रह्मेत्युपासीत सर्वं वै रुद्र इत्यपि॥ श्रुतिराह मुने तस्मात्प्रपञ्चात्मा सदाशिवः ॥ ३४ ॥
sarvaM brahmetyupAsIta sarvaM vai rudra ityapi॥ zrutirAha mune tasmAtprapaJcAtmA sadAzivaH ॥ 34 ॥
O sage, the Śruti says “Think that everything is Brahman, everything is Rudra.” Thus Sadāśiva is the Ātman of the universe.

अष्टत्रिंशत्कलान्याससामर्थ्याद्वैतभावना॥ सदाशिवोऽहमेवेति भावि तात्मा गुरुः शिवः॥ ३५ ॥
aSTatriMzatkalAnyAsasAmarthyAdvaitabhAvanA॥ sadAzivo'hameveti bhAvi tAtmA guruH zivaH॥ 35 ॥
Due to the concept of thirty-eight Kalās the concept of duality is ever present but he who has purified the Ātman by the concept “I am Sadāśiva” becomes the preceptor Śiva.

एवं विचारी सच्छिष्यो गुरुस्स्यात्स शिवस्स्वयम्॥ प्रपञ्चदेवतायंत्रमंत्रात्मा न हि संशयः ॥ ३६ ॥
evaM vicArI sacchiSyo gurussyAtsa zivassvayam॥ prapaJcadevatAyaMtramaMtrAtmA na hi saMzayaH ॥ 36 ॥
Such a disciple becomes the preceptor Śiva himself. He attains the form of the Yantra, mantra and the cosmic deity itself.

आचार्य्य रूपया विप्र संछिन्नाखिलबन्धनः ॥ शिशुः शिवपदासक्तो गुर्वात्मा भवति धुवम् ॥ ३७ ॥
AcAryya rUpayA vipra saMchinnAkhilabandhanaH ॥ zizuH zivapadAsakto gurvAtmA bhavati dhuvam ॥ 37 ॥
O Brahmin, the disciple whose bondage is severed due to the favour of the preceptor and who is engaged in Śiva’s worship becomes a lofty soul indeed.

यदस्ति वस्तु तत्सर्वं गुण प्राधान्ययोगतः ॥ समस्तं व्यस्तमपि च प्रणवार्थम्प्रचक्षते ॥ ३८ ॥
yadasti vastu tatsarvaM guNa prAdhAnyayogataH ॥ samastaM vyastamapi ca praNavArthampracakSate ॥ 38 ॥
They say that whatever exists whether a composite unit or an analysed piece is the meaning of the Praṇava in view of the predominence of the Guṇas.

रागादिदोषरहितं वेदसारः शिवो दिशः॥ तुभ्यम्मे कथितम्प्रीत्याऽद्वैतज्ञानं शिवप्रियम् ॥ ३९ ॥
rAgAdidoSarahitaM vedasAraH zivo dizaH॥ tubhyamme kathitamprItyA'dvaitajJAnaM zivapriyam ॥ 39 ॥
Out of affection I have explained the non-dualistic principle to you. It is pleasing to Śiva, it is devoid of aberrations; it is the essence of the Vedas.

यो ह्यन्यथैतन्मनुते मद्वचो मदगर्वितः ॥ देवो वा मानवस्सिद्धो गन्धर्वो मनुजोऽपि वा ॥ ४० ॥
yo hyanyathaitanmanute madvaco madagarvitaH ॥ devo vA mAnavassiddho gandharvo manujo'pi vA ॥ 40 ॥
He who believes this otherwise is proud of My words Whether he is a god or a human being or a siddha or a gandharva or a human being.

durAtmanastasya zirazchiMdyAM samatayAddhruvam ॥ sacchaktyA ripukAlAgnikalpayA na hi saMzayaH ॥ 41 ॥
The head of the wicked man was surely cut off in a level manner. There is no doubt that by his good power he is like the fire of the time of the enemy.

bhavAneva mune sAkSAcchivAdvaitavidAMvaraH॥ zivajJAnopadeze hi zivAcArapradarzakaH ॥ 42 ॥
O sage you are directly the best of the knowers of Shiva and Advaita. In teaching the knowledge of Lord Siva he demonstrates the conduct of Lord Siva.

yaddehabhasmasamparkAtsaMchinnAghavrajo'zuciH॥ mahApizAcaH samprApya tvatkRpAtassatAM gatim॥ 43 ॥
An impious ghost got his sins removed by the contact with the ashes on your body. By your grace he attained the supreme goal.

zivayogIti saMkhyAtatriloka vibhavo bhavAn॥ bhavatkaTAkSasamparkAtpazu pazupatirbhavet॥ 44 ॥
You are a Śiva yogin, an asset to the three worlds. At your benign glance even the individual soul becomes the supreme soul.

tava tasya mayi prekSA lokAzikSArthamAdarAt ॥ lokopakArakaraNe vicarantIha sAdhavaH ॥ 45 ॥
It is for instructing the world that a noble soul as yourself look up to me with respect. Indeed the saints wander here and there for helping the wide world.

idaM rahasyamparamaM pratiSThitamatastvayi ॥ tvamapi zraddhayA bhaktyA praNaveSveva sAdaram ॥ 46 ॥
This is the supreme mystery of my established opinion in you. You too, with faith and devotion, are respectfully engaged in the oṁkāras.

upavizya ca tAnsarvAnsaMyojya paramezvare ॥ zivAcAraM grAhayasva bhUtirudrAkSamizritam ॥ 47 ॥
He sat down and joined them all in the Lord. Take the Shiva character mixed with Bhuti and Rudraksha.

tvaM zivo hi zivAcArI samprAptAdvaitabhAvataH ॥ vicara~lokarakSAyai sukhamakSayamApnuhi ॥ 48 ॥
You are Śiva indeed. You follow Śaivite conduct and have understood the concept of non-dualism Wandering about for the welfare of the world you will attain an everlasting happiness.

॥ सूत उवाच ॥ श्रुत्वेदमद्भुतमतं हि षडाननोक्तं वेदान्तनिष्ठितमृषिस्तु विनम्रमूर्त्तिः ॥ भूत्वा प्रणम्य बहुशो भुवि दण्डवत्तत्पादारविन्दविहरन्मधुपत्वमाप ॥ ४९ ॥
॥ sUta uvAca ॥ zrutvedamadbhutamataM hi SaDAnanoktaM vedAntaniSThitamRSistu vinamramUrttiH ॥ bhUtvA praNamya bahuzo bhuvi daNDavattatpAdAravindaviharanmadhupatvamApa ॥ 49 ॥
Sūta said:— After hearing this wonderful cult of Vedānta, explained by Kārttikeya the sage became very humble. He bowed many times and prostrated before him. He behaved like a bee hovering round his lotus-like feet.
