Sūta said:— On hearing this truthful purport enunciated, by the preceptor the leading sage asked him about his doubt concerning the great Ātman.

Vamdeva said:- O Lord, possessor of the power of knowledge, the form of supreme bliss. The nectar of the oṁkāra flowed from the mouth of the goddess of fortune.

dRDhaprajJazca jAto'smi saMdeho vigato mama ॥ kiMcidanyanmahAsena pRcchAmi tvAM zRNu prabho ॥ 3 ॥
I have become firm in my intellect and my doubts have disappeared I have something else to ask you, O great one, please listen to me, my lord.

सदाशिवादिकीटांतरूपस्य जगतः स्थितिः॥ स्त्रीपुंरूपेण सर्वत्र दृश्यते न हि संशयः ॥ ४ ॥
sadAzivAdikITAMtarUpasya jagataH sthitiH॥ strIpuMrUpeNa sarvatra dRzyate na hi saMzayaH ॥ 4 ॥
Surely this universe from Sadāśiva to a worm is reflected in male and female forms everywhere.

Is the eternal cause of the universe in the form of a woman, or of a man or a eunuch?

uta mizraM kimanyadvA na jAtastatra nirNayaH ॥ bahudhA vivadantIha vidvAMsazzAstramohitAH ॥ 6 ॥
Or is īt a mixture of both or something else? There has been no decision so far. Deluded by sacred scriptures scholars argue on this point in various ways.

jagatsRSTividhAyinyaH zrutayo jagatA saha ॥ viSNubrahmAdayo devAH siddhAzca na vidanti hi ॥ 7 ॥
The Vedas expatiating on the creation of the universe itself, Viṣṇu, Brahmā and other gods and the Siddhas do not know it.

यथैक्यभावं गच्छेयुरेतदन्यच्च वेदय ॥ जानामीति करोमीति व्यवहारः प्रदृश्यते ॥ ८ ॥
yathaikyabhAvaM gaccheyuretadanyacca vedaya ॥ jAnAmIti karomIti vyavahAraH pradRzyate ॥ 8 ॥
Tell me this and other things how they can attain the state of unity The behavior of knowing and doing is seen.

स हि सर्वात्मसंसिद्धो विवादो नात्र कस्यचित् ॥ सर्वदेहेन्द्रियमनोबुध्यहंकारसंभवः ॥ ९ ॥
sa hi sarvAtmasaMsiddho vivAdo nAtra kasyacit ॥ sarvadehendriyamanobudhyahaMkArasaMbhavaH ॥ 9 ॥
That is indeed the perfection of the whole self and there is no dispute here for anyone. He is the source of all the body, senses, mind, intelligence and ego.

आहोस्वि दात्मनोरूपं महानत्रापि संशयः ॥ द्वयमेतद्धि सर्व्वेषां विवादास्पदमद्भुतम् ॥ १० ॥
Ahosvi dAtmanorUpaM mahAnatrApi saMzayaH ॥ dvayametaddhi sarvveSAM vivAdAspadamadbhutam ॥ 10 ॥
Or is it the form of the self? There is great doubt even here. These two are indeed the most wonderful things that everyone can argue about.

Uproot the poisonous tree of doubt born of ignorance. As the land of the trees of the Shiva-Dvaita-Maha-Kalpa becomes.

cittaM mama yathA deva bodhyo'smi kRpayA tava ॥ kRpAtastava deveza dRDhajJAnI bhavA myaham ॥ 12 ॥
O Lord, by Your grace I am to be understood as my mind is. O Lord of the gods by Your mercy become firm in my knowledge.

sUta uvAca ॥ zrutvaivaM muninA pRSTaM vaco vedAntanirvRtam ॥ rahasyaM prabhurAhedaM kiMcitprahasitAnanaH ॥ 13॥
Sūta said:— On hearing the enquiry of the sage full of Vedāntic topics, the lord smiled a little and unfolded the secret.

subrahmaNya uvAca ॥ etadeva mune guhyaM zivena paribhASitam ॥ ambAyAH zRNvato devyA vAmadeva mamApi hi ॥ 14 ॥
Subrahmaṇya said:— O sage, this very secret was narrated by Śiva while goddess Ambā and I listened.

तस्याः स्तन्यं तदा पीत्वा संतृप्तोऽस्मि मुहुर्मुहुः॥ श्रुतवान्निश्चलं तद्वै निश्चितं मे विचारितम्॥ १५॥
tasyAH stanyaM tadA pItvA saMtRpto'smi muhurmuhuH॥ zrutavAnnizcalaM tadvai nizcitaM me vicAritam॥ 15॥
Then I was fully satiated with the drink of her breast-milk. I listened to it and I came to a decisive thought.

tatte vadAmi dayayA vAmadeva mahAmune॥ mahadguhyaM ca paramaM suta tvaM zRNu sAMpratam ॥ 16 ॥
O sage, I shall sympathetically explain the same to you. O son, it is the greatest secret. Please listen to it now.

कर्मास्ति तत्त्वादारभ्य शास्त्रवादस्सुविस्तरः ॥ यथाविवेकं श्रोतव्यो ज्ञानिना ज्ञानदो मुने॥ १७ ॥
karmAsti tattvAdArabhya zAstravAdassuvistaraH ॥ yathAvivekaM zrotavyo jJAninA jJAnado mune॥ 17 ॥
The arguments in the philosophical text books are extensive beginning with those on Karmans and the principle of existence. But O sage, those arguments shall be listened to with discrimination by a wise person. Then it may yield wisdom.

त्वयोपदिष्टा ये शिष्यास्तत्र को वा भवत्समः ॥ कपिलादिषु शास्त्रेषु भ्रमंत्यद्यापि तेऽधमाः ॥ १८ ॥
tvayopadiSTA ye ziSyAstatra ko vA bhavatsamaH ॥ kapilAdiSu zAstreSu bhramaMtyadyApi te'dhamAH ॥ 18 ॥
You have taught many disciples. But among them who is like you? Those base persons are rotting in delusion even now, wrangling in the philosophical texts propounded by Kapila and others.

ते शप्ता मुनिभिः षड्भिश्शिवनिन्दा पराः पुरा॥ न श्रोतव्या हि तद्वार्त्ता तेऽन्यथावादिनो यतः॥ १९ ॥
te zaptA munibhiH SaDbhizzivanindA parAH purA॥ na zrotavyA hi tadvArttA te'nyathAvAdino yataH॥ 19 ॥
They indulged in insulting Śiva and hence were cursed by the seven sages. Their views should not be heard because they explain false notions.

अनुमानप्रयोगस्याप्यवकाशो न विद्यते॥ पंचावयवयुक्तस्य स तु धूमस्य दर्शनात् ॥ २० ॥
anumAnaprayogasyApyavakAzo na vidyate॥ paMcAvayavayuktasya sa tu dhUmasya darzanAt ॥ 20 ॥
There is no room for the use of inference. That is because of the sight of smoke composed of five components.

पर्व्वतस्याग्निमद्भावं वदंत्यत्रापि सुव्रत। प्रत्यक्षस्य प्रपंचस्य दर्शनालंबनं त्वतः ॥ २१ ॥
parvvatasyAgnimadbhAvaM vadaMtyatrApi suvrata। pratyakSasya prapaMcasya darzanAlaMbanaM tvataH ॥ 21 ॥
O virtuous one it is said that the mountain is like fire You are dependent on seeing the direct phenomenon.

ज्ञातव्यः परमेशानः परमात्मा न संशयः ॥ स्त्रीपुंरूपमयं विश्वं प्रत्यक्षेणैव दृश्यते ॥ २२ ॥
jJAtavyaH paramezAnaH paramAtmA na saMzayaH ॥ strIpuMrUpamayaM vizvaM pratyakSeNaiva dRzyate ॥ 22 ॥
The Supreme Lord is to be known as the Supreme Soul, no doubt. The universe consisting of male and female forms is directly visible.

षट्कोशरूपः पिण्डो हि तत्र चाद्यत्रयम्भवेत् ॥ मात्रंशजं पुनश्चान्यत्पित्रंशजमिति श्रुतिः ॥ २३ ॥
SaTkozarUpaH piNDo hi tatra cAdyatrayambhavet ॥ mAtraMzajaM punazcAnyatpitraMzajamiti zrutiH ॥ 23 ॥
The body is in the form of six cells and there are three of them. It is said that one is born of the mother and another is born of the father.

एवं सर्वशरीरेषु स्त्रीपुंभावविदो जनाः ॥ परमात्मन्यपि मुने स्त्रीपुंभावं विदुर्बुधा॥ २४ ॥
evaM sarvazarIreSu strIpuMbhAvavido janAH ॥ paramAtmanyapi mune strIpuMbhAvaM vidurbudhA॥ 24 ॥
Thus people know the nature of male and female in all bodies. O sage the wise know the male and female nature even in the Supreme Self.

सच्चिदानदरूपत्वं वदति ब्रह्मणः श्रुतिः ॥ असन्निवर्त्तकः शब्दः सदात्मेति निगद्यते ॥ २५ ॥
saccidAnadarUpatvaM vadati brahmaNaH zrutiH ॥ asannivarttakaH zabdaH sadAtmeti nigadyate ॥ 25 ॥
The Śruti speaks of the Brahman as having the form of existence, knowledge and bliss. The word ‘existence’ is used in order to exclude the ‘non-existent’.

निवर्त्तनं जगत्त्वस्य चिच्छब्देन विधीयते ॥ त्रिलिंगवर्त्ती सच्छब्दः पुरुषोत्र विधीयताम् ॥ २६ ॥
nivarttanaM jagattvasya cicchabdena vidhIyate ॥ triliMgavarttI sacchabdaH puruSotra vidhIyatAm ॥ 26 ॥
The reversal of the universe is prescribed by the word chi. Let the word sattva, which is the source of the three sexes, be prescribed here in the Purushotra.

प्रकाशवाची स भवेत्सत्प्रकाश इति स्फुटम् ॥ ज्ञानशब्दस्य पर्य्यायश्चिच्छब्दः स्त्रीत्वमागतः ॥ २७ ॥
prakAzavAcI sa bhavetsatprakAza iti sphuTam ॥ jJAnazabdasya paryyAyazcicchabdaH strItvamAgataH ॥ 27 ॥
It is clear that he who speaks of light should be the true light. The word chich, synonymous with the word knowledge, has become feminine.

प्रकाशश्चिच्च मिथुनं जगत्कारणतां गतम् ॥ सच्चिदात्मन्यपि तथा जगत्कारणतां गतम् ॥ २८ ॥
prakAzazcicca mithunaM jagatkAraNatAM gatam ॥ saccidAtmanyapi tathA jagatkAraNatAM gatam ॥ 28 ॥
The pair of light and light have become the cause of the universe. Even in the true Self it has thus become the cause of the universe.

एकत्रैव शिवश्शक्तिरिति भावो विधीयते ॥ तैलवर्त्त्यादिमालिन्यात्प्रकाशस्यापि वर्त्तते ॥ २९ ॥
ekatraiva zivazzaktiriti bhAvo vidhIyate ॥ tailavarttyAdimAlinyAtprakAzasyApi varttate ॥ 29 ॥
In the self-same individual the feeling of Śiva and Śakti exists. If there is dirt in the oil or the wick there may be dirt in the light too.

मालिन्यमशिवत्वं च चिताग्न्यादिषु दृश्यते ॥ एवं विवर्त्तकत्वेन शिवत्वं श्रुतिचोदितम् ॥ ३० ॥
mAlinyamazivatvaM ca citAgnyAdiSu dRzyate ॥ evaM vivarttakatvena zivatvaM zruticoditam ॥ 30 ॥
Thus dirt and inauspiciousness is seen in the funeral fire also. Śivatva is due to illusion there.

जीवाश्रितायाश्चिच्छक्तेर्दौर्बल्यं विद्यते सदा ॥ तन्निवृत्यर्थमेवात्र शक्तित्वं सार्वकालिकम् ॥ ३१ ॥
jIvAzritAyAzcicchakterdaurbalyaM vidyate sadA ॥ tannivRtyarthamevAtra zaktitvaM sArvakAlikam ॥ 31 ॥
There is weakness in the power of Cit in the individual soul. It is to exclude it that the conception of Śakti is ever present.

बलवाञ्छक्तिमांश्चेति व्यवहारः प्रदृश्यते ॥ लोके वेदे च ससतं वामदेव महामुने ॥ ३२ ॥
balavAJchaktimAMzceti vyavahAraH pradRzyate ॥ loke vede ca sasataM vAmadeva mahAmune ॥ 32 ॥
O sage, people say in the world: he is strong, he is powerful and in the Vedas too there is a similar expression.

एवं शिवत्वं शक्तित्वं परमात्मनि दर्शितम् ॥ शिवशक्त्योस्तु संयोगादानंदस्सततोदितः ॥ ३३ ॥
evaM zivatvaM zaktitvaM paramAtmani darzitam ॥ zivazaktyostu saMyogAdAnaMdassatatoditaH ॥ 33 ॥
Thus the Śivatva and Śaktitva is present in the great Ātman. The bliss from the union of Śiva and Śakti is ever rising.

अतो मुने तमुद्दिश्य मुनयः क्षीणकल्मषाः ॥ शिवे मनस्समाधाय प्राप्ताश्शिवमनामयम् ॥ ३४ ॥
ato mune tamuddizya munayaH kSINakalmaSAH ॥ zive manassamAdhAya prAptAzzivamanAmayam ॥ 34 ॥
Hence, O sage, sinless ascetics aiming at bliss fix their minds in Śiva and attain untainted auspiciousness.

सर्वात्मत्वं तयोरेवं ब्रह्मेत्युपनिषत्सु च ॥ गीयते ब्रह्मशब्देन बृंहिधात्वर्थगोचरम् ॥ ३५ ॥
sarvAtmatvaM tayorevaM brahmetyupaniSatsu ca ॥ gIyate brahmazabdena bRMhidhAtvarthagocaram ॥ 35 ॥
The word Brahman in the Upaniṣads signifies Ātman collectively. It can be traced to the root Bṛh to increase or grow.

बृंहणत्वं बृहत्त्वं च शंभ्वाख्यविग्रहे ॥ पंचब्रह्ममये विश्वप्रतीतिर्ब्रह्म शब्दिता ॥ ३६ ॥
bRMhaNatvaM bRhattvaM ca zaMbhvAkhyavigrahe ॥ paMcabrahmamaye vizvapratItirbrahma zabditA ॥ 36 ॥
Growing in size and massiveness is ever present in Śiva constituting the five Brahmans. The word Brahman denotes the universe.

प्रतिलोमात्मके हंसे वक्ष्यामि प्रणवोद्भवम् ॥ तव स्नेहाद्वामदेव सावधानतया शृणु ॥ ३७ ॥
pratilomAtmake haMse vakSyAmi praNavodbhavam ॥ tava snehAdvAmadeva sAvadhAnatayA zRNu ॥ 37 ॥
O Vāmadeva, due to my affection for you I shall explain the origin of the Praṇava when the word Haṃsaḥ is reverted. Listen attentively.

व्यंजनस्य सकारस्य हकारस्य च वर्जनात् ॥ ओमित्येव भवेत्स्थूलो वाचकः परमात्मनः ॥ ३८ ॥
vyaMjanasya sakArasya hakArasya ca varjanAt ॥ omityeva bhavetsthUlo vAcakaH paramAtmanaH ॥ 38 ॥
If the consonants Sa and Ha are removed it becomes Oṃ. It is the expression of the great Ātman.

महामन्त्रस्स विज्ञेयो मुनिभिस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः ॥ तत्र सूक्ष्मो महामन्त्रस्तदुद्धारं वदामि ते ॥ ३९ ॥
mahAmantrassa vijJeyo munibhistattvadarzibhiH ॥ tatra sUkSmo mahAmantrastaduddhAraM vadAmi te ॥ 39 ॥
It shall be known as the great Mantra by the expert sages. This great Mantra is subtle. I shall tell you its analysis.

आद्ये त्रिपंचरूपे च स्वरे षोडशके त्रिषु ॥ महामन्त्रो भवेदादौ स सकारो भवेद्यदा ॥ ४०॥
Adye tripaMcarUpe ca svare SoDazake triSu ॥ mahAmantro bhavedAdau sa sakAro bhavedyadA ॥ 40॥
The great Mantra is formed with “sa” and the sixteenth vowel (ḥ) = “saḥ” and “a” + “ha” with the fifteenth vowel (“ṃ”) = “aham” = (“so'ham”).

हंसस्य प्रतिलोमः स्यात्सकारार्थश्शिवः स्मृतः ॥ शक्त्यात्मको महामन्त्रवाच्यः स्यादिति निर्णयः ॥ ४१ ॥
haMsasya pratilomaH syAtsakArArthazzivaH smRtaH ॥ zaktyAtmako mahAmantravAcyaH syAditi nirNayaH ॥ 41 ॥
It is the inverted form of Haṃsa. The meaning of the letter ‘Sa’ is Śiva. The conclusion is, the Śakti form is expressed by the great Mantra.

Even if they shine in the form of shrinkage, they are always there. The art of the animal is called the art of knowledge, even in the time of passion. She is here called Kala in the form of the five elements.

Something may be the cause of the doer and something may be the sole means of the essence. That knowledge should be passion for sense gratification.

kAlo hi bhAvabhAvAnAM bhAsAnAM bhAsanAtmakaH ॥ kramAvacchedako bhUtvA bhUtAdiriti kathyate ॥ 82 ॥
Kāla is the illuminator of positive and negative appearances. Being a separating factor it is called Bhūtādi.

इदन्तु मम कर्तव्यमिदन्नेति नियामिका ॥ नियतिस्स्याद्विभोश्शक्तिस्तदाक्षेपात्पतेत्पशुः ॥ ८३ ॥
idantu mama kartavyamidanneti niyAmikA ॥ niyatissyAdvibhozzaktistadAkSepAtpatetpazuH ॥ 83 ॥
Niyati means the factor that discriminates and ordains. “This shall be done and this shall not be done by me.” It is a Śakti of the lord. Sotting it at nought the individual soul falls.

एतत्पंचकमेवास्य स्वरूपा वारकत्वतः ॥ पञ्चकञ्चुकमाख्यातमन्तरंगं च साधनम् ॥ ८४ ॥
etatpaMcakamevAsya svarUpA vArakatvataH ॥ paJcakaJcukamAkhyAtamantaraMgaM ca sAdhanam ॥ 84 ॥
This set of five is called “the five sheaths” in view of its nature of enveloping the form. It is the innermost and most essential means.
