Subrahmaṇya said:— Henceforth I shall explain, O good-faced lady, the mode of creation for the set of four, Maheśa etc. from Sadāśiva.

Sadāśiva the lord of ether is the composite. The set of four, Maheśa etc. is the individualistic form.

sadAzivasahasrAMzAnmahezasya samudbhavaH ॥ puruSAnanarUpatvAdvAyoradhipatizca saH ॥ 3 ॥
Maheśa is a thousandth part of Sadāśiva. It has the form of Puruṣa for its face. It is the lord of wind too.

mAyAzaktiyuto vAme sakalazca kriyAdhikaH ॥ asyaiva vyaSTirUpaM syAdIzvarAdicatuSTayam ॥ 4॥
He is associated with Māyā Śakti on his left. He is Saguṇa having much activity. The set of four Īśvara etc. is his own Vyaṣṭi.

Izo vizvezvaraH pazcAtparamezastataH param ॥ sarvezvara itIdantu tirodhAcakramuttamam ॥ 5 ॥
This set of four comprising Īśvara, Viśveśvara, Parameśvara and Sarveśvara is the excellent Tirobhāvacakra.

तिरोभावो द्विधा भिन्न एको रुद्रादिगोचरः ॥ अन्यश्च देहभावेन पशुवर्गस्य सन्ततेः ॥ ६ ॥
tirobhAvo dvidhA bhinna eko rudrAdigocaraH ॥ anyazca dehabhAvena pazuvargasya santateH ॥ 6 ॥
Tirobhāva is twofold. One concerns Rudra, the other the individual souls in view of their physical bodies.

भोगानुरंजनपरः कर्मसाम्यक्षणावधि ॥ कर्मसाम्ये स एकः स्यादनुग्रहमयो विभुः ॥ ७ ॥
bhogAnuraMjanaparaH karmasAmyakSaNAvadhi ॥ karmasAmye sa ekaH syAdanugrahamayo vibhuH ॥ 7 ॥
The latter remains till equality in activity is achieved. When this is achieved, there remains only the lord of the form of blessing.

तत्र सर्वेश्वरा यास्ते देवताः परिकीर्त्तिताः ॥ परब्रह्मात्मकाः साक्षान्निर्विकल्पा निरामयाः ॥ ८ ॥
tatra sarvezvarA yAste devatAH parikIrttitAH ॥ parabrahmAtmakAH sAkSAnnirvikalpA nirAmayAH ॥ 8 ॥
There all the Īśvaras who are glorified as the deities, are identical with the great Brahman itself, free from alternatives and ailments.

तिरोभावात्मकं चक्रं भवेच्छान्तिकलामयम् ॥ महेश्वराधिष्ठितं च पदमेतदनुत्तमम् ॥ ९ ॥
tirobhAvAtmakaM cakraM bhavecchAntikalAmayam ॥ mahezvarAdhiSThitaM ca padametadanuttamam ॥ 9 ॥
The Tirobhāva Cakra consists of the Śāntikalā. This excellent region is presided over by Maheśvara.

etadeva padaM prApyaM mahezapadasevinAm ॥ mAhezvarANAM sAlokyakramAdeva vimuktidam॥ 10॥
This region is attainable by those who serve Maheśa etc. It yields Sālokya liberation to the devotees of Maheśvara.

mahezvarasahasrAMzAdrudramUrtirajAyata ॥ aghoravadanAkArastejastattvAdhipazca saH ॥ 11 ॥
The image Rudra is born of a thousandth part of Maheśvara. He has Aghora for his face. He is the lord of the principle of fire.

gaurIzaktiyuto vAme sarvvasaMhArakRtprabhuH ॥ asyaiva vyaSTirUpaM syAcchivAdyatha catuSTayam ॥ 12 ॥
He is associated with Gaurīśakti on his left. He is the cause of dissolution of the universe; of him alone is the Vyaṣṭi born—the set of four, Śiva etc.

शिवो हरो मृडभवौ विदितं चक्रमद्भुतम् ॥ संहाराख्यं महादिव्यं परमं हि मुनीश्वर ॥ १३ ॥
zivo haro mRDabhavau viditaM cakramadbhutam ॥ saMhArAkhyaM mahAdivyaM paramaM hi munIzvara ॥ 13 ॥
This set of four consists of Śiva, Hara, Mṛda and Bhava. This wheel of dissolution, O sage, is wonderful and divine.

स संहारस्त्रिधा प्रोक्तो बुधैर्नित्यादिभेदतः ॥ नित्यो जीवसुषुप्त्याख्यो विधेर्नैमित्तिकः स्मृतः ॥ १४ ॥
sa saMhArastridhA prokto budhairnityAdibhedataH ॥ nityo jIvasuSuptyAkhyo vidhernaimittikaH smRtaH ॥ 14 ॥
That destruction is described by the wise in three ways, according to the distinction between eternal and others. The eternal sleep of the living entity is considered to be the occasional of the law.

विलयस्तस्य तु महानिति वेदनिदर्शितः ॥ जीवानां जन्मदुःखादिशांतानामुषितात्मनाम् ॥ १५ ॥
vilayastasya tu mahAniti vedanidarzitaH ॥ jIvAnAM janmaduHkhAdizAMtAnAmuSitAtmanAm ॥ 15 ॥
The Vedas have demonstrated that the merger of these is great. The living beings are peaceful from birth and suffering.

vizrAMtyarthaM munizreSTha karmaNAM pAkahetave॥ saMhAraH kalpitastredhA rudreNAmitatejasA ॥ 16 ॥
O best of ascetics for the sake of rest and for the sake of cooking actions The destruction was conceived in three ways by the immeasurably effulgent Rudra.

rudrasyaiva tu kRtyAnAM trayametadudAhRtam ॥ saMhRtavapi sRSTyAdikRtyAnAM paJcakaM vibhoH ॥ 17 ॥
Thus I have mentioned the three activities of Rudra in respect of dissolution. The five activities of the lord in respect of creation shall also be explained to you.

मुने तत्र भवाद्यास्ते देवताः परिकीर्त्तिताः ॥ परब्रह्मस्वरूपाश्च लोकानुग्रहकारकाः ॥ १८ ॥
mune tatra bhavAdyAste devatAH parikIrttitAH ॥ parabrahmasvarUpAzca lokAnugrahakArakAH ॥ 18 ॥
O sage, the deities Bhava etc. are identical with the great Brahman, being the cause of bliss.

संहाराख्यमिदं चक्रं विद्यारूपकलामयम् ॥ अधिष्ठितं च रुद्रेण पदमेतन्निरामयम् ॥ १९॥
saMhArAkhyamidaM cakraM vidyArUpakalAmayam ॥ adhiSThitaM ca rudreNa padametannirAmayam ॥ 19॥
This wheel of dissolution has Vidyārūpa Kalā. This healthy region is presided over by Rudra himself.

एतदेव पदं प्राप्यं रुद्राराधनकांक्षिणाम् ॥ रुद्राणां तद्धि सालोक्यक्रमात्सायुज्यदम्मुने ॥ २०॥
etadeva padaM prApyaM rudrArAdhanakAMkSiNAm ॥ rudrANAM taddhi sAlokyakramAtsAyujyadammune ॥ 20॥
This region is attainable by those who desire the propitiation of Rudras. O sage, it yields the Sāyujya of Rudras gradually through Sālokya.

रुद्रमूर्त्तेस्सहस्रांशाद्विष्णोश्चैवाभवज्जनिः ॥ स वामदेवचक्रात्मा वारितत्त्वैकनायकः ॥ २१ ॥
rudramUrttessahasrAMzAdviSNozcaivAbhavajjaniH ॥ sa vAmadevacakrAtmA vAritattvaikanAyakaH ॥ 21 ॥
Viṣṇu was born from a thousandth part of Rudra. In the form of Vāmadeva wheel he is the presiding deity of the principle of water.

रमाशाक्तियुतो वामे सर्व्वरक्षाकरो महान्॥ चतुर्भुजोऽरविंदाक्षः श्यामश्शंखादिचिह्नभृत् ॥ २२ ॥
ramAzAktiyuto vAme sarvvarakSAkaro mahAn॥ caturbhujo'raviMdAkSaH zyAmazzaMkhAdicihnabhRt ॥ 22 ॥
He is associated with Lakṣmī Śakti on the left. He is the protector of all. He has four arms. He has eyes as splendid as the lotus. He is dark-complexioned and bears the characteristics of Śaṅkha etc.

अस्यैव वासुदेवादिचतुष्कं व्यष्टितां गतम् ॥ उपासनरतानां वै वैष्णवानां विमुक्तिदम् ॥ २३ ॥
asyaiva vAsudevAdicatuSkaM vyaSTitAM gatam ॥ upAsanaratAnAM vai vaiSNavAnAM vimuktidam ॥ 23 ॥
Of him alone is the set of lour Vāsudevas in the Vyaṣṭi form. It bestows liberation on the devotees of Viṣṇu engaged in worship through meditation.

वासुदेवोऽनिरुद्धश्च ततस्संकर्षणः परः ॥ प्रद्युम्नश्चेति विख्यातं स्थितिचक्रमनुत्तमम् ॥ २४ ॥
vAsudevo'niruddhazca tatassaMkarSaNaH paraH ॥ pradyumnazceti vikhyAtaM sthiticakramanuttamam ॥ 24 ॥
This set of four consists of Vāsudeva, Aniruddha, Saṃkarṣaṇa and Pradyumna. This excellent wheel of sustenance is well known.

स्थितिस्सृष्टस्य जगतस्तत्कर्त्रा सह पालनम् ॥ आरब्धकर्मभोगान्तं जीवानां फलभोगिनाम् ॥ २५ ॥
sthitissRSTasya jagatastatkartrA saha pAlanam ॥ ArabdhakarmabhogAntaM jIvAnAM phalabhoginAm ॥ 25 ॥
Sustenance means the protection of the existing universe along with its creator until the completion of the pleasures of the souls, the reapers of the fruit.

viSNorevedamAkhyAtaM kRtyaM rakSAvidhAyinaH॥ sthitAvapi tu sRSTyAdi kRtyAnAM paMcakaM vibhoH ॥ 26॥
Protection is the activity of Viṣṇu. In the sustenance also the lord has five activities, viz; creation etc,

तत्र प्रद्युम्नमुख्यास्ते देवताः परिकीर्तिताः ॥ निर्विकल्पा निरातंका मुक्तानंदकरास्सदा ॥ २७ ॥
tatra pradyumnamukhyAste devatAH parikIrtitAH ॥ nirvikalpA nirAtaMkA muktAnaMdakarAssadA ॥ 27 ॥
The deities of whom Pradyumna is the chief are absolute and without distress. They cause bliss to liberated souls.

स्थितिचक्रमिदं ब्रह्मन्प्रतिष्ठारूपमुत्तमम् ॥ जनार्दनाधिष्ठितं च परमं पदमुच्यते ॥ २८ ॥
sthiticakramidaM brahmanpratiSThArUpamuttamam ॥ janArdanAdhiSThitaM ca paramaM padamucyate ॥ 28 ॥
O Brahmin, this wheel of sustenance which is permanent is presided over by Viṣṇu. It is the highest abode.

evadeva padaM prApyaM viSNupAdAbjasevinAm ॥ vaiSNavAnAM cakramidaM sAlokyAdipadapradam ॥ 29॥
This region is attainable by those who serve the lotus-feet of Viṣṇu. This wheel yields Sālokya etc. to the devotees of Viṣṇu.

viSNoreva sahasrAMzAtsaMbabhUva pitAmahaH ॥ sadyojAtamukhAtmA yaH pRthivItattvanAyakaH ॥ 30॥
Brahmā was born of a thousandth part of Viṣṇu. He has the face of Sadyojāta and is the presiding deity of the principle of earth.

वाग्देवीसहितो वामे सृष्टिकर्त्ता जगत्प्रभुः ॥ चतुर्मुखो रक्तवर्णो रजोरूपस्वरूपवान् ॥ ३१ ॥
vAgdevIsahito vAme sRSTikarttA jagatprabhuH ॥ caturmukho raktavarNo rajorUpasvarUpavAn ॥ 31 ॥
He is accompanied by the goddess of speech on his left. He is the creator and lord of the universe. He has four faces. He is red in complexion and his form is possessed of Rajas attribute.

हिण्यगर्भाद्यस्यैव व्यष्टिरूपं चतुष्टयम् ॥ हिरण्यगर्भोथ विराट् पुरुषः काल एव च॥ ३२ ॥
hiNyagarbhAdyasyaiva vyaSTirUpaM catuSTayam ॥ hiraNyagarbhotha virAT puruSaH kAla eva ca॥ 32 ॥
Hiraṇyagarbha, Virāṭ, Puruṣa and Kāla, the four constitute his personal form.

सृष्टि चक्रमिदं ब्रह्म पुत्रादिऋषिसेवितम्॥ सर्व्वकामार्थदं ब्रह्मन्परिवारसुखप्रदम्॥ ३३ ॥
sRSTi cakramidaM brahma putrAdiRSisevitam॥ sarvvakAmArthadaM brahmanparivArasukhapradam॥ 33 ॥
O Brahmin, this wheel of creation is the cause of Brahma’s sons and other sages. It bestows desires and happiness to the devotee.

सृष्टिस्तु संहृतस्यास्य जीवस्य प्रकृतौ बहिः॥ आनीय कर्मभोगार्थ साधनांगफलैस्सह ॥ ३४ ॥
sRSTistu saMhRtasyAsya jIvasya prakRtau bahiH॥ AnIya karmabhogArtha sAdhanAMgaphalaissaha ॥ 34 ॥
But creation is outside the nature of this withdrawn living being. Bring it with the fruits of the limbs of the sadhana for the enjoyment of the karma.

संयोजनमितीदं तु कृत्यं पैतामहं विदुः ॥ जगत्सृष्टिक्रियाविज्ञा यावद्व्यूहं सुखावहम् ॥ ३५ ॥
saMyojanamitIdaM tu kRtyaM paitAmahaM viduH ॥ jagatsRSTikriyAvijJA yAvadvyUhaM sukhAvaham ॥ 35 ॥
This act is known as the combination of the grandfathers Knowledge of the creation and activities of the universe, as long as the army is pleasant.

जगत्सृष्टावपि मुने कृत्यानां च पंचकं विभोः ॥ अस्ति कालोदयस्तत्र देवताः परिकीर्त्तिताः॥ ३६ ॥
jagatsRSTAvapi mune kRtyAnAM ca paMcakaM vibhoH ॥ asti kAlodayastatra devatAH parikIrttitAH॥ 36 ॥
O sage, in the creation of the universe there are five functions of the lord. The present time etc. are the deities there.

निवृत्तिरूपमाख्यातं सृष्टिचक्रमिदं बुधैः ॥ पितामहाधिष्ठितं च पदमेतद्धि शोभनम् ॥ ३७ ॥
nivRttirUpamAkhyAtaM sRSTicakramidaM budhaiH ॥ pitAmahAdhiSThitaM ca padametaddhi zobhanam ॥ 37 ॥
This wheel of creation is in the form of turning round. This charming region is presided over by Brahman.

एतदेव प्रदं प्राप्यं ब्रह्मार्पितधियां नृणाम् ॥ पैतामहानामेतद्धि सालोक्या दिविमुक्तिदम् ॥ ३८ ॥
etadeva pradaM prApyaM brahmArpitadhiyAM nRNAm ॥ paitAmahAnAmetaddhi sAlokyA divimuktidam ॥ 38 ॥
This region is attainable by those who have dedicated their minds to Brahmā. This indeed bestows Sālokya and other liberations on the devotees of Brahmā.

अस्मिन्नपि चतुष्के तु चक्राणां प्रणवो भवेत् ॥ महेशादिक्रमादेव गौण्या वृत्त्या स वाचकः ॥ ३९ ॥
asminnapi catuSke tu cakrANAM praNavo bhavet ॥ mahezAdikramAdeva gauNyA vRttyA sa vAcakaH ॥ 39 ॥
Even in regard to the set of four wheels the Praṇava indicates Maheśa etc.

इदं खलु जगच्चक्रं श्रुतिविश्रुतवैभवम् ॥ पञ्चारं चक्रमिति ह स्तौति श्रुतिरिदम्मुने॥ ४०॥
idaM khalu jagaccakraM zrutivizrutavaibhavam ॥ paJcAraM cakramiti ha stauti zrutiridammune॥ 40॥
O sage, this wheel of universe is glorified by the Śrutis. The Vedas eulogise it as the wheel with five spokes.

ekameva jagaccakraM zambhozzaktivijRMbhitam ॥ sRSTyAdipaMcAMvayavaM paMcAramiti kathyate ॥ 41 ॥
Although the wheel of the universe with its five constituents: creation etc. has five spokes, it develops and increases by Śiva’s energy.

This chakra is the work of Shakti and is supported by the golden light. This water is covered by water and this water is covered by fire.

Such are the seven sheaths which protect the universe. The expanse of water is ten times more massive than the wheel.

imamarthamurIkRtya cakrasAmIpyavarttanAt॥ salilasya ca tanmadhye iti prAha zrutissvayam॥ 49 ॥
It is by accepting this sense that the Śruti says “In the middle of water”. Of course the earth rotates as the wheel.

That Śiva alone accompanied by Śakti performs incessant sports through blessing, disappearance, dissolution, sustenance and creation.

bahuneha kimuktena mune sAraM vadAmi te॥ ziva evedamakhilaM zaktimAniti nizcitam॥ 51॥
O sage, of what avail is much talk? I shall tell you the essence. Śiva endowed with Śakti is all this. It is definite conclusion.
