Vamdeva said:- O Lord, remaining in the six-faced ocean of nectar of knowledge. O son of Viśvāmaraśvara, you are the destroyer of the sufferings of the prostrate.

What is described as the desired knowledge of the six kinds of meanings? What are the six kinds of meanings there and what is the knowledge, O Lord?

What is explained therein? What is the fruit of that knowledge? Please mention all that I have asked.

Without knowing this I have been deluded by Śiva’s Māyā. I am ignorant of the Pāśupata Śāstra.

ahaM zivapadadvaMdvajJAnAmRtarasAyanam॥ pIttvA vigatasammoho bhaviSyAmi yathA tathA ॥ 5 ॥
I am the nectar of knowledge of the duality of the feet of Shiva. After drinking it I shall become free from delusion as it is.

kRpAmRtArdrayA dRSTyA vilokya suciraM mayi ॥ karttavyo'nugrahaH zrImatpAdAbjazaraNAgate ॥ 6 ॥
Looking at me for a long time with eyes moistened with the nectar of compassion Favor should be shown to those who have taken refuge at the lotus feet of the beautiful Lord.

Having heard these words spoken by the sage Indra the almighty Lord possessed of the power of knowledge He spoke words that were very frightening to see.

subrahmaNya uvAca ॥ zrUyatAmmunizArdUla tvayA yatpRSTamAdarAt॥ samaSTivyaSTibhAvena parijJAnammahezituH ॥ 8 ॥
Subramanya said:- O tiger among ascetics please hear what you have respectfully asked Knowledge of the great Lord by the being of the whole and the individual.

praNavArtthaparijJAnarUpaM tadvistarAdaham ॥ vadAmi SaDvidhArthaikya parijJAnena suvrata ॥ 9 ॥
I am the form of knowledge of the meaning of the oṁkāra in detail. I speak of the unity of the six kinds of meanings by the knowledge of the Suvrata.

प्रथमो मंत्ररूपः स्याद्द्वितीयो मंत्रभावितः ॥ देवतार्त्थस्तृतीयोऽर्थः प्रपञ्चार्थस्ततः परम्॥ १०॥
prathamo maMtrarUpaH syAddvitIyo maMtrabhAvitaH ॥ devatArtthastRtIyo'rthaH prapaJcArthastataH param॥ 10॥
The first is in the form of a mantra and the second is in the form of a mantra. The third meaning is the meaning of the gods and the next meaning is the meaning of the world.

चतुर्थः पञ्चमार्थस्स्याद्गुरुरूपप्रदर्शकः ॥ षष्ठश्शिष्यात्मरूपोऽर्थः षड्विधार्थाः प्रकीर्त्तिताः ॥ ११ ॥
caturthaH paJcamArthassyAdgururUpapradarzakaH ॥ SaSThazziSyAtmarUpo'rthaH SaDvidhArthAH prakIrttitAH ॥ 11 ॥
The fourth and fifth meanings are indicative of the form of the Guru. The sixth meaning is the self-form of the disciple and the six kinds of meanings have been described.

O excellent sage, I shall explain to you the form of the mantra which makes a man possessed of perfect knowledge.

AdyassvaraH paMcamazca paJcamAntastataH paraH ॥ bindunAdau ca paJcArNAH proktA vedairna cAnyathA ॥ 13 ॥
The first and the fifth vowels, the fifth letter of the fifth class of consonants, Bindu and Nāda these five letters are mentioned by the Vedas.

एतत्समष्टिरूपो हि वेदादिस्समुदाहृतः ॥ नादस्सर्व्वसमष्टिः स्याद्बिंद्वाढ्यं यच्चतुष्टयम् ॥ १४ ॥

व्यष्टिरूपेण संसिद्धं प्रणवे शिववाचके ॥ यंत्ररूपं शृणु प्राज्ञ शिवलिंगं तदेव हि ॥ १५ ॥
vyaSTirUpeNa saMsiddhaM praNave zivavAcake ॥ yaMtrarUpaM zRNu prAjJa zivaliMgaM tadeva hi ॥ 15 ॥
It is perfected in the form of a stick in the oṁkāra denoting Lord Śiva. O wise one hear the form of the instrument that is the Shiva Linga.

सर्व्वाधस्ताल्लिखेत्पीठं तदूर्ध्वम्प्रथमं स्वरम् ॥ उवर्णं च तदूर्द्ध्वं स्थम्पवर्गान्तं तदूर्ध्वगम् ॥ १६ ॥
sarvvAdhastAllikhetpIThaM tadUrdhvamprathamaM svaram ॥ uvarNaM ca tadUrddhvaM sthampavargAntaM tadUrdhvagam ॥ 16 ॥
Write the seat below it all and the first vowel above it. The uvarna is above that and the end of the sthampavarga is above that.

तन्मस्तकस्थं बिंदुं च तदूर्द्ध्वं नादमालिखेत् ॥ यंत्रे संपूर्णतां याति सर्वकामः प्रसिध्यति ॥ १७ ॥
tanmastakasthaM biMduM ca tadUrddhvaM nAdamAlikhet ॥ yaMtre saMpUrNatAM yAti sarvakAmaH prasidhyati ॥ 17 ॥
The dot on the head of the demon should be drawn with the sound above it All desires are fulfilled in the instrument.

एतं यंत्रं समालिख्य प्रणवे नव वेष्टयेत् ॥ तदुत्थेनैव नादेन विद्यन्नादावसानकम् ॥ १८ ॥
etaM yaMtraM samAlikhya praNave nava veSTayet ॥ tadutthenaiva nAdena vidyannAdAvasAnakam ॥ 18 ॥
The Yantra is encompassed by the Praṇava itself. The Nāda shall be known through the Nāda arising therefrom.

देवतार्त्थम्प्रवक्ष्यामि गूढं सर्व्वत्र यन्मुने ॥ तव स्नेहाद्वामदेव यथा शंकरभाषितम् ॥ १९ ॥
devatArtthampravakSyAmi gUDhaM sarvvatra yanmune ॥ tava snehAdvAmadeva yathA zaMkarabhASitam ॥ 19 ॥
O sage, I shall now explain the secret topic of the deity. I shall mention it, out of my affection to you, in the manner explained by Śiva.

सद्योजातम्प्रपद्यामीत्युपक्रम्य सदाशिवोम् ॥ इति प्राह श्रुतिस्तारं ब्रह्मपंचकवाचकम् ॥ २० ॥
sadyojAtamprapadyAmItyupakramya sadAzivom ॥ iti prAha zrutistAraM brahmapaMcakavAcakam ॥ 20 ॥
Beginning with “I resort to the lord born all of a sudden” and concluding with “Sadā Śivam” the Vedic text clearly expresses the five Brahmans.

विज्ञेया ब्रह्मरूपिण्यस्सूक्ष्माः पंचैव देवताः ॥ एता एव शिवस्यापि मूर्तित्वे नोपबृंहिताः ॥ २१ ॥
vijJeyA brahmarUpiNyassUkSmAH paMcaiva devatAH ॥ etA eva zivasyApi mUrtitve nopabRMhitAH ॥ 21 ॥
The five deities shall be known comprising the subtle form of Brahman. These are enlarged in the form of the idol of Śiva too.

शिवस्य वाचको मन्त्रश्शिवमूर्त्तेश्च वाचकः ॥ मूर्त्तिमूर्तिमतोर्भेदो नात्यन्तं विद्यते यतः ॥ २२ ॥
zivasya vAcako mantrazzivamUrttezca vAcakaH ॥ mUrttimUrtimatorbhedo nAtyantaM vidyate yataH ॥ 22 ॥
The Mantra that expresses Śiva expresses his idol too, since there is not much of difference between the idol and the original.

IzAnamukuTopeta ityArabhya puroditaH ॥ zivasya vigrahaH paJcavaktrANi zRNu sAMpratam॥ 23 ॥
I have already referred to the form of Śiva with Īśāna at the head. Now listen about his five faces.

पंचमादि समारभ्य सद्योजाताद्यनुक्रमात् ॥ उर्द्ध्वांतमीशानांतं च मुखपंचकमीरितम् ॥ २४ ॥
paMcamAdi samArabhya sadyojAtAdyanukramAt ॥ urddhvAMtamIzAnAMtaM ca mukhapaMcakamIritam ॥ 24 ॥
Beginning with the fifth one the Sadyojāta and proceeding till Īśāna upwards are the five faces.

ईशानस्यैव देवस्य चतुर्व्यूहपदे स्थितम् ॥ पुरुषाद्यं च सद्यांतं ब्रह्मरूपं चतुष्टयम् ॥ २५ ॥
IzAnasyaiva devasya caturvyUhapade sthitam ॥ puruSAdyaM ca sadyAMtaM brahmarUpaM catuSTayam ॥ 25 ॥
It is situated at the foot of the four clusters of the northern god The fourfold form of the Brahman, beginning with the Purusha and ending with the present.

पंच ब्रह्मसमष्टिस्स्यादीशानं ब्रह्म विश्रुतम् ॥ पुरुषाद्यं तु तद्व्यष्टिस्सद्योजातान्तिकं मुने ॥ २६ ॥
paMca brahmasamaSTissyAdIzAnaM brahma vizrutam ॥ puruSAdyaM tu tadvyaSTissadyojAtAntikaM mune ॥ 26 ॥
The five Brahmans are composed of the northern Brahman known as the Lord. O sage that stick which is the beginning of the Purusha is immediately born.

अनुग्रहमयं चक्रमिदं पंचार्त्थकारणम् ॥ परब्रह्मात्मकं सूक्ष्मं निर्विकारमनामयम् ॥ २७ ॥
anugrahamayaM cakramidaM paMcArtthakAraNam ॥ parabrahmAtmakaM sUkSmaM nirvikAramanAmayam ॥ 27 ॥
This set of five is the ‘wheel of blessing’. It is the same as Brahman. It is subtle; free from aberration and ailment.

अनुग्रहोऽपि द्विविधस्तिरोभावादिगोचरः ॥ प्रभुश्चान्यस्तु जीवानां परावरविमुक्तिदः ॥ २८ ॥
anugraho'pi dvividhastirobhAvAdigocaraH ॥ prabhuzcAnyastu jIvAnAM parAvaravimuktidaH ॥ 28 ॥
The Anugraha or blessing is twofold: appearance and disappearance. The lord who bestows the greater and the lesser salvation to the souls is another.

एतत्सदाशिवस्यैव कृत्यद्वयमुदाहृतम् ॥ अनुग्रहेऽपि सृष्ट्यादिकृत्यानां पंचकं विभोः ॥ २९ ॥
etatsadAzivasyaiva kRtyadvayamudAhRtam ॥ anugrahe'pi sRSTyAdikRtyAnAM paMcakaM vibhoH ॥ 29 ॥
This is the twofold function of Śiva for ever. The five functions of creation etc. come under Anugraha.

मुने तत्रापि सद्याद्या देवताः परिकीर्त्तिताः ॥ परब्रह्मस्वरूपास्ताः पंच कल्याणदास्सदा ॥ ३० ॥
mune tatrApi sadyAdyA devatAH parikIrttitAH ॥ parabrahmasvarUpAstAH paMca kalyANadAssadA ॥ 30 ॥
O sage, there too the deities Sadya etc. are of the form of the great Brahman. The five always bestow happiness.

अनुग्रहमयं चक्रं शांत्यतीतकलामयम् ॥ सदाशिवाधिष्ठितं च परमं पदमुच्यते ॥ ३१॥
anugrahamayaM cakraM zAMtyatItakalAmayam ॥ sadAzivAdhiSThitaM ca paramaM padamucyate ॥ 31॥
The Anugraha cakra is the greatest bliss presided over by Sadāśiva. It consists of the digit beyond calmness.

एतदेव पदं प्राप्यं यतीनां भवितात्मनाम् ॥ सदाशिवोपासकानां प्रणवासक्तचेतसाम् ॥ ३२ ॥
etadeva padaM prApyaM yatInAM bhavitAtmanAm ॥ sadAzivopAsakAnAM praNavAsaktacetasAm ॥ 32 ॥
This region is attainable by the pious ascetics who worship Sadāśiva, with the minds fixed on the Praṇava.

एतदेव पदं प्राप्य तेन साकं मुनीश्वराः ॥ भुक्त्वा सुविपुलान्भोगान्देवेन ब्रह्मरूपिणा ॥ ३३ ॥
etadeva padaM prApya tena sAkaM munIzvarAH ॥ bhuktvA suvipulAnbhogAndevena brahmarUpiNA ॥ 33 ॥
Having attained this very abode the great sages accompanied him Having enjoyed abundant pleasures by the god in the form of Brahma.

महाप्रलयसंभूतौ शिवसाम्यं भजंति हि ॥ न पतंति पुनः क्वापि संसाराब्धौ जनाश्च ते ॥ ३४ ॥
mahApralayasaMbhUtau zivasAmyaM bhajaMti hi ॥ na pataMti punaH kvApi saMsArAbdhau janAzca te ॥ 34 ॥
They worship the equality of Lord Śiva when they are born in the great cataclysm. They and their people never fall back into the ocean of this world.

ते ब्रह्मलोक इति च श्रुतिराह सनातनी ॥ ऐश्वर्य्यं तु शिवस्यापि समष्टिरिदमेव हि ॥ ३५ ॥
te brahmaloka iti ca zrutirAha sanAtanI ॥ aizvaryyaM tu zivasyApi samaSTiridameva hi ॥ 35 ॥
The eternal Veda says “Te brahmaloke” etc. The glory of Śiva is the composite form itself.

सर्वैश्वर्येण सम्पन्न इत्याहाथर्व्वणी शिखा ॥ सर्वैश्वर्य्यप्रदातृत्वमस्यैव प्रवदन्ति हि ॥ ३६ ॥
sarvaizvaryeNa sampanna ityAhAtharvvaNI zikhA ॥ sarvaizvaryyapradAtRtvamasyaiva pravadanti hi ॥ 36 ॥
The Vedic text Atharvaśīrṣa says “Equipped with glory and prosperity”. The ability to bestow glory shall be mentioned of him alone.

चमकस्य पदान्नान्य दधिकं विद्यते पदम् ॥ ब्रह्मपंचकविस्तारप्रपंचः खलु दृश्यते ॥ ३७ ॥
camakasya padAnnAnya dadhikaM vidyate padam ॥ brahmapaMcakavistAraprapaMcaH khalu dRzyate ॥ 37 ॥
There is no higher region than that of Śiva. This universe is only an extension of the five Brahmans.

ब्रह्मभ्य एवं संजाता निवृत्त्याद्याः कला मताः ॥ सूक्ष्मभूतस्वरूपिण्यः कारणत्वेन विश्रुताः ॥ ३८ ॥
brahmabhya evaM saMjAtA nivRttyAdyAH kalA matAH ॥ sUkSmabhUtasvarUpiNyaH kAraNatvena vizrutAH ॥ 38 ॥
Nivṛtti and the Kalās are the offshoots of five Brahmans. They are in the form of subtle elements well known as causes.

स्थूलरूपस्वरूपस्य प्रपंचस्यास्य सुव्रत ॥ पंचधावस्थितं यत्तद्ब्रह्मपंचकमिष्यते ॥ ३९ ॥
sthUlarUpasvarUpasya prapaMcasyAsya suvrata ॥ paMcadhAvasthitaM yattadbrahmapaMcakamiSyate ॥ 39 ॥
O sage of good rites, the set of five Brahmans is the cause of gross cosmos.

puruSaH zrotravANyau ca zabdakAzau ca paMcakam ॥ vyAptamIzAnarUpeNa brahmaNA munisattama ॥ 40 ॥

The mind, nose, organ of generation, smell and earth, this set of five is pervaded by the Brahman Sadya. The whole universe is identical with the five Brahmans.
