Subrahmaṇya said:— Well done, well done, O fortunate Vāmadeva, O great sage, you are a great devotee of Śiva and the most excellent of those who possess Śiva’s knowledge.

tvayA tvaviditaM kiMcinnA sti lokeSu kutracit॥ tathApi tava vakSyAmi lokAnugrahakAriNaH॥ 2॥
Nowhere in the world is there anything not known to you. Still I shall tell you since you wish to bless the worlds.

lokesminpazavassarvve nAnAzAstravimohitAH ॥ vaJcitAH paramezasya mAyayAtivicitrayA ॥ 3॥
All the individuals in the world are deceived by the Māyā of Īśa. They are deceived by various sacred scriptures.

na jAnati paraM sAkSAtpraNavArthammahezvaram ॥ saguNannirguNaM brahma tridevajanakamparam ॥ 4॥
They do not know the great lord, the meaning of the Praṇava, the Nirguṇa and Saguṇa Brahman, the great progenitor of trinity.

I shall lift up my right hand and swear unto you truth again and again.

praNavArthazzivaH sAkSAtprAdhAnyena prakIrttitaH ॥ zrutiSu smRtizAstreSu purANeSvAgameSu ca ॥ 6॥
The meaning of the oṁkāra is directly described as Shiva with primacy. In the scriptures, in the scriptures of memory, in the Puranas and in the Vedas.

yato vAco nivarttante aprApya manasA saha ॥ AnandaM yasya ve vidvAnna bibheti kutazca na ॥ 7 ॥
Because words withdraw without reaching the mind The joy of which ve learned man is not afraid and nowhere else.

yasmAjjagadidaM sarvaM vidhiviSNvindrapUrvakam ॥ saha bhUtendriyagrAmaiH prathamaM samprasUyate ॥ 8 ॥
From him this entire universe is created by the laws of Vishnu and Indra It is first born with the groups of beings and senses.

na samprasUyate yo vai kutazcana kadAcana ॥ yasminna bhAsate vidyunna na sUryo na candramAH ॥ 9 ॥
He who is never born anywhere else In which neither lightning nor the sun nor the moon shines.

His effulgence shines throughout the universe Endowed with all opulence he himself is known as the lord of all.

yo vai mumukSubhirdhyeyaH zambhurAkAzamadhyagaH ॥ sarvavyApI prakAzAtmA bhAsarUpo hi cinmayaH ॥ 11॥
He is Lord Śambhu in the midst of the sky who is to be meditated upon by those seeking liberation The all-pervading Self of Light is the form of light and is made up of consciousness.

The supreme power of a man is attractive and attainable She is transcendental and hidden by her own qualities and is pure and auspicious.

तदीयन्त्रिविधंरूपं स्थूलं सूक्ष्मं परन्ततः ॥ ध्येयं मुमुक्षुभिर्नित्यं क्रमतो योगिभिर्मुने ॥ १३॥
tadIyantrividhaMrUpaM sthUlaM sUkSmaM parantataH ॥ dhyeyaM mumukSubhirnityaM kramato yogibhirmune ॥ 13॥
Three types of his form—gross, subtle and causal shall be meditated upon by those seeking salvation, O sage, and by the Yogins in the proper order.

niSkalassarvvadevAnAmAdidevassanAtanaH ॥ jJAnakriyAsvabhAvo yaH para mAtmeti gIyate ॥ 14॥
The unsullied being, the primordial and the eternal lord of all who is stated to be the supreme soul has knowledge and the ritual as his innate nature.

tasya devAdhidevasya mUrttissAkSAtsadAzivaH ॥ paJcamaMtratanurdevaH kalApaJcakavigrahaH ॥ 15 ॥
The idol of that supreme deity is Sadashiva himself He is the body of the five mantras and the form of the five arts.

zuddhasphaTikasaMkAzaH prasannaH zItaladyutiH ॥ paMcavaktro dazabhujastripaMcanayanaH prabhuH ॥ 16॥
He was like pure crystal and cheerful and had a cool glow He has five faces ten arms and three five eyes.

IzAnamukuTopetaH puruSAsyaH purAtanaH ॥ aghorahRdayo vAmadevaguhyapradezavAn ॥ 17॥
The ancient male face with the northeastern crown. He was of a terrible heart and had a secret region of the left god.

sadyapAdazca tanmUrttiH sAkSAtsakalaniSkalaH ॥ sarvvajJatvAdiSaTzaktiSaDaMgIkRtavigrahaH ॥ 18॥
The immediate foot is that idol and is directly pure in all respects. The six powers, such as omniscience, are the sixfold conflict.

zabdAdizaktisphuritahRtpaMkajavirAjitaH ॥ svazaktyA vAmabhAge tu manonmanyA vibhUSitaH ॥ 19॥
He is infused with the power of the word throbbing in the lotus of his heart; he is bedecked on his left by Manonmanī, his own Śakti.

With reference to the six entities, Mantra, etc., I shall explain the Praṇava-souled lord in his composite and personal nature.

upadezakramo hyAdau vaktavyazzrUyatAmayam॥ cAturvvarNyaM hi lokesminprasiddhammAnuSe mune ॥ 21 ॥
The order of instruction shall be mentioned at first. Please hear, O sage, indeed the four castes are well known in the world.

त्रैवर्णिकानामेवात्र श्रुत्याचारसमन्वयः ॥ शुश्रूषामात्रसारा हि शूद्राः श्रुतिबहिष्कृताः ॥ २२ ॥
traivarNikAnAmevAtra zrutyAcArasamanvayaH ॥ zuzrUSAmAtrasArA hi zUdrAH zrutibahiSkRtAH ॥ 22 ॥
The Vedas enjoin rituals for the first three castes. The Śūdras are excluded since their only activity is service.

traivarNikAnAM sarvveSAM svasvAzramaratAtmanAm ॥ zrutismRtyudito dharmo'nuSTheyo nAparaH kvacit ॥ 23 ॥
All the trivarnikas were devoted to their respective hermitages The religious principles enjoined by the Vedas and Smritis are to be practiced and nowhere else.

श्रुतिस्मृत्युदितं कर्म्म कुर्व्व न्सिद्धिमवाप्स्यति ॥ इत्युक्तम्परमेशेन वेदमार्गप्रदर्शिना ॥ २४ ॥
zrutismRtyuditaM karmma kurvva nsiddhimavApsyati ॥ ityuktamparamezena vedamArgapradarzinA ॥ 24 ॥
By performing the action enjoined by the Vedas and Smritis he will attain perfection. Thus spoken by the Supreme Lord who showed us the path of the Vedas.

varNAzramAcArapuNyairabhyarcya paramezvaram ॥ tatsAyujyaM gatAssarve bahavo munisattamAH ॥ 25 ॥
Having worshiped the Supreme Lord by the pious rituals of varna and ashrama Many foremost of the sages all attained his fellowship.

ब्रह्मचर्येण मुनयो देवा यज्ञक्रियाध्वना ॥ पितरः प्रजया तृप्ता इति हि श्रुतिरब्रवीत् ॥ २६॥
brahmacaryeNa munayo devA yajJakriyAdhvanA ॥ pitaraH prajayA tRptA iti hi zrutirabravIt ॥ 26॥
The Śruti says that the sages are satisfied by Brahmacarya; the gods by sacrifice; and the Pitṛs by progeny.

evaM RNatrayAnmukto vAnaprasthAzramaM gataH ॥ zItoSNasukhaduHkhAdisahiSNurvijitendriyaH ॥ 27॥
Thus freed from the three debts he went to the hermitage of Vanaprastha He is tolerant of cold and heat, pleasure and pain and has conquered his senses.

तपस्वी विजिताहारो यमाय योगम भ्यसेत् ॥ यथा दृढतरा बुद्धिरविचाल्या भवेत्तथा ॥ २८ ॥
tapasvI vijitAhAro yamAya yogama bhyaset ॥ yathA dRDhatarA buddhiravicAlyA bhavettathA ॥ 28 ॥
An ascetic who has conquered his diet should practice yoga for Yama. The more firm and unshakable the intellect becomes.

एवं क्रमेण शुद्धात्मा सर्व्वकर्म्माणि विन्यसेत् ॥ सन्यस्य सर्व्वकर्म्माणि ज्ञानपूजापरो भवेत् ॥ २९ ॥
evaM krameNa zuddhAtmA sarvvakarmmANi vinyaset ॥ sanyasya sarvvakarmmANi jJAnapUjAparo bhavet ॥ 29 ॥
In this way, in this order, the pure soul should arrange all the actions. One should restrain all actions and become devoted to the worship of knowledge.

सा हि साक्षाच्छिवैक्येन जीवन्मुक्तिफलप्रदा ॥ सर्व्वोत्तमा हि विज्ञेया निर्विकारा यतात्म नाम् ॥ ३० ॥
sA hi sAkSAcchivaikyena jIvanmuktiphalapradA ॥ sarvvottamA hi vijJeyA nirvikArA yatAtma nAm ॥ 30 ॥
She is directly the bestower of the fruits of living liberation by the unity of Shiva. The best of all is to be understood as being free from change and self-controlled.

तत्प्रकारमहं वक्ष्ये लोकानुग्रहकाम्यया ॥ तव स्तेहान्महाप्राज्ञ सावधानतया शृणु ॥ ३१ ॥
tatprakAramahaM vakSye lokAnugrahakAmyayA ॥ tava stehAnmahAprAjJa sAvadhAnatayA zRNu ॥ 31 ॥
I shall explain different modes of the same with a desire for blessing the worlds. O intelligent one, it is out of affection for you that I do so. Please listen with attention.

सर्व्वशास्त्रार्थतत्त्वज्ञं वेदांतज्ञानपारगम् ॥ आचार्य्यमुपगच्छेत्स यतिर्म्मतिमतां वरम् ॥ ३२॥
sarvvazAstrArthatattvajJaM vedAMtajJAnapAragam ॥ AcAryyamupagacchetsa yatirmmatimatAM varam ॥ 32॥
The ascetic shall approach a preceptor, the most excellent among intelligent ones; the preceptor who knows the principles of sacred scriptures and has mastered the Vedāntic knowledge.

तत्समीपमुपव्रज्य यथाविधि विचक्षणः ॥ दीर्घदण्डप्रणामाद्यैस्तोषयेद्यत्नतस्सुधीः॥ ३३॥
tatsamIpamupavrajya yathAvidhi vicakSaNaH ॥ dIrghadaNDapraNAmAdyaistoSayedyatnatassudhIH॥ 33॥
After approaching him in accordance with the idles, the ascetic devotee shall please him assiduously by obeisances, prostration etc.

यो गुरु्स्स शिवः प्रोक्तो यश्शिवस्स गुरुस्स्मृतः ॥ इति निश्चित्य मनसा स्वविचारन्निवेदयेत्॥ ३४॥
yo gurussa zivaH prokto yazzivassa gurussmRtaH ॥ iti nizcitya manasA svavicArannivedayet॥ 34॥
The preceptor is Śiva and Śiva is the preceptor. After deciding this in mind he shall express his intention.

लब्धानुज्ञस्तु गुरुणा द्वादशाहं पयोव्रती॥ शुक्लपक्षे चतुर्थ्यां वा दशम्यां वा विधानतः ॥ ३५॥
labdhAnujJastu guruNA dvAdazAhaM payovratI॥ zuklapakSe caturthyAM vA dazamyAM vA vidhAnataH ॥ 35॥
Having obtained the permission of her spiritual master she observed a vow of milk for twelve days On the fourth or tenth day of the bright fortnight according to the prescribed rituals.

प्रातः स्नात्वा विशुद्धात्मा कृतनित्य क्रियस्सुधीः ॥ गुरुमाहूय विधिना नांदीश्राद्धं समारभेत् ॥ ३६॥
prAtaH snAtvA vizuddhAtmA kRtanitya kriyassudhIH ॥ gurumAhUya vidhinA nAMdIzrAddhaM samArabhet ॥ 36॥
In the morning he took his bath and purified himself and performed his daily rituals One should call the spiritual master and perform the Nandi shraddha according to the prescribed rituals.

विश्वेदेवाः सत्यवसुसंज्ञावंतः प्रकीर्त्तिताः ॥ देवश्राद्धे ब्रह्मविष्णु महेशाः कथितास्त्रयः ॥ ३७॥
vizvedevAH satyavasusaMjJAvaMtaH prakIrttitAH ॥ devazrAddhe brahmaviSNu mahezAH kathitAstrayaH ॥ 37॥
The Visvedevas are described as having the name Satyavasu In the shraddha of the demigods, Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh are mentioned as the three gods.

RSizrAddhe tu samproktA devakSetramanuSyajAH ॥ devazrAddhe tu vasurudrAdityAssamprakIrttitAH ॥ 38 ॥
In the shraddha of the sages the gods born of the fields of men are mentioned. In the shraddha of the gods Vasu Rudra and Aditya are mentioned.

The four great sages Sanaka and others performed the human shraddha In the shraddha of the ghosts the five great beings and after that.

चक्षुरादीन्द्रियग्रामो भूतग्रामश्चतुर्विधः॥ । पितृश्राद्धे पिता तस्य पिता तस्य पिता त्रयः ॥ ४०॥
cakSurAdIndriyagrAmo bhUtagrAmazcaturvidhaH॥ । pitRzrAddhe pitA tasya pitA tasya pitA trayaH ॥ 40॥
The group of sense-organs consists of the eye, etc; that of the Bhūtas is of four types. In the Pitṛ Śrāddha the father, grandfather and greatgrandfather are included.

In the mother's shraddha the mother's grandmother and the great-grandmother In the self-shraddha the four souls are the fathers and grandfathers.

They are thousands of lights in the darkness of calamity and cows of desire for the offering of wealth May all the holy waters and holy idols and the dust of the feet of the brahmins protect me.

केशश्मश्रुनखानेव कर्म्मावधि विसृज्य च॥ समाष्टकेशान्विधिवत्कारयित्वा विधानतः॥ ८१॥

Leaving behind his hair, mustache and nails until the end of his actions. Having done the eight hairs in accordance with the rituals.

He shall take bath and wear a washed and dried cloth. He shall be pure in thought and body. Silently he shall perform Ācamana twice and apply ashes duly and perform the Puṇyāhavācana.

Except the materials for the homa and the articles of gift for the preceptor—because they are naturally pure, every other article shall be sprinkled with holy water.

He shall make gift to brahmins especially to devotees and to Śiva in the form of preceptor.

He gave them clothes and other gifts and bowed down on the ground like a rod The arms, the cape and the clothes were washed off the ground from the staff.

After drinking the oṁkāra one should perform the Dvirachama and then touch the body. Reciting the mantras to the navel and chanting the oṁkāras and offering obeisances.

Afterwards one should chant the Svahantas separately with milk, yogurt and ghee. After washing himself three times with the same oṁkāra he washed himself in two ways.

Sit down in front of him with a firm mind and a steady seat One should perform the three pranayama in the perfect manner as described above.
