RSaya UcuH ॥ sUta sUta mahAbhAgastvamasmadgururuttamaH ॥ atastvAM paripRcchAmo bhavato'nugraho yadi ॥ 1 ॥
The sages said:- O charioteer, O charioteer, you are most fortunate and our best teacher. Therefore if it is your favor we inquire of you.

There are always teachers like you among faithful disciples You have now shown us that we are affectionate.

The opinion of Vāmadeva was hinted at by you at the time of Virajā homa formerly. O sage, it was not heard by us in detail.

tadidAnIM zrotukAmAH zraddhayA paramAdarAt ॥ vayaM sarvve kRpAsiMdho prItyA tadvaktumarhasi ॥ 4॥
Now we are eager to hear it reverentially and devotedly, O ocean of mercy. It behoves you to narrate it with pleasure.

Having heard these words the charioteer was delighted I offered my obeisances to Lord Mahadeva, the supreme spiritual master.

Mahadevi Trijanani Guru and Vyasa with devotion Pleasing the sage he spoke these words in a deep voice.

सूत उवाच ॥ स्वस्त्यस्तु मुनयस्सर्वे सुखिन स्सन्तु सर्व्वदा ॥ शिवभक्ता स्थिरात्मानश्शिवे भक्तिप्रवर्तकाः ॥ ७॥
sUta uvAca ॥ svastyastu munayassarve sukhina ssantu sarvvadA ॥ zivabhaktA sthirAtmAnazzive bhaktipravartakAH ॥ 7॥
Suta said:- May all the sages be well and may they always be happy They are devotees of Lord Śiva and are steadfast in their minds and initiate devotion to Lord Śiva.

तदतीव विचित्रं हि श्रुतं गुरुमुखाम्बुजात् ॥ इतः पूर्वम्मया नोक्तं गुह्यप्राकट्यशंकया ॥ ८ ॥
tadatIva vicitraM hi zrutaM gurumukhAmbujAt ॥ itaH pUrvammayA noktaM guhyaprAkaTyazaMkayA ॥ 8 ॥
That wonderful thing has been heard from the lotus-like mouth of the preceptor. This was not mentioned by me before, being afraid of revealing a secret.

यूयं खलु महाभागाश्शिवभक्ता दृढव्रताः ॥ इति निश्चित्य युष्माकं वक्ष्यामि श्रूयताम्मुदा ॥ ९॥
yUyaM khalu mahAbhAgAzzivabhaktA dRDhavratAH ॥ iti nizcitya yuSmAkaM vakSyAmi zrUyatAmmudA ॥ 9॥
Indeed you are highly fortunate devotees of Śiva and stable in your rites. Convinced of this, I shall mention it to you. May this be heard joyously.

पुरा रथन्तरे कल्पे वामदेवो महामुनिः ॥ गर्भमुक्तश्शिवज्ञानविदां गुरुतमस्स्वयम्॥ १०॥
purA rathantare kalpe vAmadevo mahAmuniH ॥ garbhamuktazzivajJAnavidAM gurutamassvayam॥ 10॥
In the past in the Kalpa between the chariots there lived a great sage named Vamadeva He himself was freed from the womb and was the most difficult of those who knew the knowledge of Lord Siva.

वेदागमपुराणादिसर्व्वशास्त्रार्थवत्त्ववित्॥ देवासुरमनुष्यादिजीवानां जन्मकर्म्मवित्॥ ११॥
vedAgamapurANAdisarvvazAstrArthavattvavit॥ devAsuramanuSyAdijIvAnAM janmakarmmavit॥ 11॥
He knew the meaning of all scriptures such as Vedas, Agamas, Puranas and others. He knows the birth and death of devas, asuras, human beings and other living beings.

भस्मावदातसर्व्वांगो जटामण्डललमंडितः ॥ निराश्रयो निःस्पृहश्च निर्द्वन्द्वो निरहंकृतिः ॥ १२॥
bhasmAvadAtasarvvAMgo jaTAmaNDalalamaMDitaH ॥ nirAzrayo niHspRhazca nirdvandvo nirahaMkRtiH ॥ 12॥
His whole body was burnt to ashes and he was adorned with a matted hair. He is free from dependence and desire and free from duality and egoism.

digaMbaro mahAjJAnI mahezvara ivAparaH ॥ ziSyabhUtairmunIndraizca tAdRzaiH parivAritaH ॥ 13॥
Digambara is a great wise man like another Maheshwa He was surrounded by such great sages who had become his disciples.

Traveling this earth by the merit of touching his feet Purifying them daily with their hearts immersed in the Supreme Abode.

They happily entered the southern peak of Kumarashikhar Meru Where resides the divine son of a hundred peacocks.

jJAnazaktidharo vIrassarvAsuravimardanaH ॥ gajAvallIsamAyuktassarvvairdevairnamaskRtaH ॥ 16॥
He was a hero possessing the power of knowledge and destroyer of all demons He was surrounded by elephants and creepers and was worshiped by all the gods.

तत्र स्कन्दसरो नाम सरस्सागरसन्निभम् ॥ शिशिरस्वादुपानीयं स्वच्छागाधबहूदकम् ॥ १७॥
tatra skandasaro nAma sarassAgarasannibham ॥ zizirasvAdupAnIyaM svacchAgAdhabahUdakam ॥ 17॥
There is a lake called Skandasara which resembles the ocean It is a tasty winter drink with plenty of clean, deep water.

sarvvAzcaryyaguNopetaM vidyate svAmisannidhau ॥ tatra snAtvA vAmadevassahaziSyairmahAmuniH ॥ 18॥
It is endowed with all wonderful qualities in the presence of its master The great sage Vamadeva along with his disciples took his bath there.

kumAraM zikharAsInaM munivRndaniSevitam॥ udyadAdityasaMkAzaM mayUravaravAhanam॥ 19॥
The young man was seated on the peak and was attended by a host of sages. It was like the rising sun and carried by a great peacock.

चतुर्भुजमुदारांगं मुकुटादिविभूषितम्॥ शक्तिरत्नद्वयोपास्यं शक्तिकुक्कुटधारिणम्॥ २०॥
caturbhujamudArAMgaM mukuTAdivibhUSitam॥ zaktiratnadvayopAsyaM zaktikukkuTadhAriNam॥ 20॥
He had four arms and a generous body and was adorned with a crown and other ornaments. He is worshiped with two gems of power and holds a chicken of power.

varadAbhayahastaJca dRSTvA skandaM munIzvaraH॥ sampUjya parayA bhaktyA stotuM samupacakrame ॥ 21॥
The lord of ascetics saw Skanda holding boons and fearlessness Having worshiped him with utmost devotion he began to praise him.

॥ vAmadeva uvAca ॥ OM namaH praNavArthAya praNavArthavidhAyine ॥ praNavAkSarabIjAya praNavAya namonamaH ॥ 22॥
Vāmadeva said:— Om, obeisance to the meaning of the Praṇava, to the enterpreter of the Praṇava, to the Bīja of the letters of the Praṇava.

Obeisance to the lord in the form of the purport of the Upaniṣad, to their enterpreter and the knower of their purport.

नमो गुहाय भूतानां गुहासु निहिताय च ॥ गुह्याय गुह्यरूपाय गुह्यागमविदे नमः ॥ २४॥
namo guhAya bhUtAnAM guhAsu nihitAya ca ॥ guhyAya guhyarUpAya guhyAgamavide namaH ॥ 24॥
Obeisance to Guha, to the deity concealed in the cavities of the hearts of all living beings. Obeisance to the secret one of secret form. Obeisance to the knower of the secret sacred lore.

aNoraNIyase tubhyaM mahatopi mahIyase ॥ namaH parAvarajJAya paramAtmasvarUpiNe ॥ 25 ॥
Obeisance to you the minutest of the minute, the greatest of the great, the knower of the greater and the lesser, the lord in the form of the great Ātman.

skandAya skandarUpAya mihirAruNetejase ॥ namo mandAramAlodyanmukuTAdibhRte sadA ॥ 26 ॥
Obeisance to Skanda; to the lord of splendour as red as that of the sun in the form of Skanda; to the lord who wears the coronets adorned with the garlands of the flowers of the divine Mandāra tree.

Obeisance to the disciple of Śiva; to the son of Śiva, to the bestower of bliss and happiness, to the beloved of Śiva; to the storehouse of pleasure of Śiva and Śivā.

Obeisance to the son of the Gaṅgā, to the intelligent Kārttikeya, to the noble son of Umā, lying in the grove of Sara plants.

Obeisance to the six-faced god of six imperishable bodies to the one who interprets in six ways, to the lord whose form is beyond the sixfold path.

O soul of the twelve (?) obeisance be to you with twelve wide eyes, with twelve uplifted arms and twelve types of weapons.

चतुर्भुजाय शान्ताय शक्तिकुक्कुट धारिणे ॥ वरदाय विहस्ताय नमोऽसुरविदारिणे ॥ ३१ ॥
caturbhujAya zAntAya zaktikukkuTa dhAriNe ॥ varadAya vihastAya namo'suravidAriNe ॥ 31 ॥
Obeisance to the four-armed lord, to the calm lord who bears Śakti and a cock, to the bestower of boons; the learned or to one with a bird in his hand. Obeisance to the splitter of the Asuras.

गजावल्लीकुचालिप्तकुंकुमांकितवक्षसे ॥ नमो गजाननानन्दमहिमानंदितात्मने ॥ ३२ ॥
gajAvallIkucAliptakuMkumAMkitavakSase ॥ namo gajAnanAnandamahimAnaMditAtmane ॥ 32 ॥
Obeisance to the lord whose chest is marked by the saffron that had been smeared over the breasts of Gajavallī. Obeisance to the one whose heart is delighted by the pleasures of the elephant-faced lord Gaṇapati.

ब्रह्मादिदेवमुनिकिन्नरगीयमानगाथाविशेषशुचिचिंतितकीर्त्तिधाम्ने ॥ वृन्दारकामलकिरीटविभूषणस्रक्पूज्याभिरामपदपंकज ते नमोस्तु ॥ ३३ ॥
brahmAdidevamunikinnaragIyamAnagAthAvizeSazuciciMtitakIrttidhAmne ॥ vRndArakAmalakirITavibhUSaNasrakpUjyAbhirAmapadapaMkaja te namostu ॥ 33 ॥
O lord, whose song of praise is sung by Brahmā other gods, sages and the Kinnaras, obeisance be to you who are the abode of fame reflected upon by the pious. O lord, whose lotus-like beautiful feet deserve the worship of the garlands that decorate the splendid crowns of the gods, obeisance be to you.

इति स्कन्दस्तवन्दिव्यं वामदेवेन भाषितम् ॥ यः पठेच्छृणुयाद्वापि स याति परमां गतिम् ॥ ३४ ॥
iti skandastavandivyaM vAmadevena bhASitam ॥ yaH paThecchRNuyAdvApi sa yAti paramAM gatim ॥ 34 ॥
He who reads or listens to this divine prayer to Skanda, uttered by Vāmadeva, attains the supreme goal.

महाप्रज्ञाकरं ह्येतच्छिवभक्तिविवर्द्धनम् ॥ आयुरारोग्यधनकृत्सर्व्वकामप्रदं सदा ॥ ३५ ॥
mahAprajJAkaraM hyetacchivabhaktivivarddhanam ॥ AyurArogyadhanakRtsarvvakAmapradaM sadA ॥ 35 ॥
This prayer sharpens intelligence, enhances devotion to Śiva, increases longevity, imparts health and affluence and yields all desires always.

इति स्तुत्वा वामदेवो देवं सेनापतिं प्रभुम् ॥ प्रदक्षिणात्रयं कृत्वा प्रणम्य भुवि दण्डवत् ॥ ३६ ॥
iti stutvA vAmadevo devaM senApatiM prabhum ॥ pradakSiNAtrayaM kRtvA praNamya bhuvi daNDavat ॥ 36 ॥
Having thus praised the lord Vamadeva the commander of the army After making three pradakshinas he bowed down on the ground like a rod.

साष्टांगं च पुनः कृत्वा प्रदक्षिणनमस्कृतम् ॥ अभवत्पार्श्वतस्तस्य विनयावनतो द्विजाः ॥ ३७ ॥
sASTAMgaM ca punaH kRtvA pradakSiNanamaskRtam ॥ abhavatpArzvatastasya vinayAvanato dvijAH ॥ 37 ॥
Again he bowed down with six limbs and circumambulated and offered obeisances The brahmins humbly stood by his side.

vAmadevakRtaM stotramparamArthavijRmbhitam ॥ zrutvAbhavatprasanno hi mahezvarasutaH prabhuH ॥ 38॥
This stotra composed by Vamadeva expands on the supreme meaning Hearing this the lord son of Maheshwara was pleased.

tamuvAca mahAsenaH prItosmi tava pUjayA ॥ bhaktyA stutyA ca bhadrante kimadyakaravANyaham ॥ 39॥
The great army said to him I am pleased with your worship O auspicious ones what can I do today with devotion and praise.

मुने त्वं योगिनान्मुख्यः परिपूर्णश्च निस्पृहः ॥ भवादृशां हि लोकेस्मिप्रार्थनीयं न विद्यते ॥ ४०॥
mune tvaM yoginAnmukhyaH paripUrNazca nispRhaH ॥ bhavAdRzAM hi lokesmiprArthanIyaM na vidyate ॥ 40॥
O sage, you are the chief of Yogins, perfect and free from avarice. There is nothing for people like you which has to be solicited.

tathApi dharmmarakSAyai lokAnugrahakAMkSayA॥ tvAdRzA sAdhavassanto vicaranti mahItale॥ 41॥
Still saintly men like you move about in the world for upholding virtue and blessing the worlds.

zrotavyamasti cedbrahmanvaktumarhasi sAmpratam॥ tadidAnImahaM vakSye lokAnugrahahe tave॥ 42॥
O Brahmin, if it is fit to be heard you shall speak it out. I shall expound it to the people for their welfare.

On hearing the words of Skanda, the sage Vāmadeva, bowed with humility and spoke in a tone as majestic as the sound of clouds.

vAmadeva uvAca ॥। bhagavanparamezastvaM parAparavibhUtidaH ॥ sarvvajJasarvakarttA ca sarvvazaktidharaH prabhuH ॥ 44॥
Vāmadeva said:— O lord, you are the great Īśa (parameśa), the bestower of prosperity to all and sundry. You are omniscient; creator of all and the lord bearing all Śaktis.

jIvA vayaM tu te vaktuM sannidhau paramezituH ॥ tathApyanugraho yante yattvaM vadasi mAM prati ॥ 45 ॥
We are insignificant creatures to speak before you who are a great lord. Still it is your blessing that you speak to me.

O intelligent one, I have but a particle of wisdom. Urged thus I ask you. My transgression must be excused.

praNavo hi paraH sAkSAtparamezvaravAcakaH ॥ vAcyaH pazupatirdevaH pazUnAM pAzamocakaH ॥ 47 ॥
Praṇava is the word that expresses lord Śiva. Lord Paśupati is the goal, the releaser of the bondage of the Paśus, the individual souls.

वाचकेन समाहूतः पशून्मोचयते क्षणात् ॥ तस्माद्वाचकतासिद्धिः प्रणवेन शिवम्प्रति ॥ ४८ ॥
vAcakena samAhUtaH pazUnmocayate kSaNAt ॥ tasmAdvAcakatAsiddhiH praNavena zivamprati ॥ 48 ॥
Invoked with the mantra he releases the Jīva instantaneously. Hence siddhi is achieved with the mantra Om for Śiva.

OM mitIdaM sarvamiti zrutirAha sanAtanI ॥ omiti brahma sarvvaM hi brahmeti ca samabravIt ॥ 49॥
The eternal Śruti says, “Verily all this is Om; Om is Brahman. Everything is Brahman.”

O commander of the gods, obeisance to you, the lord of the gods and of ascetics. Obeisance to you the perfect one.

evaM sthite jagatyasmiJchivAdanyanna vidyate ॥ sarvvarUpadharaH svAmI zivo vyApI mahezvaraH ॥ 51 ॥
In this situation, there is nothing distinct from Śiva in this world. Śiva is the lord who assumes all forms. Maheśvara is all-pervasive.

The universal and the personal application of Praṇava was heard by me. O lord, but I have never had a preceptor like you to tell me that.

Hence take pity on me and reveal its meaning in accordance with the rules of instruction and the conduct of the good.

My lord alone is the preceptor who cuts off the bondage. O preceptor, now favour me with the exposition of its meaning.

इति स मुनिना पृष्टः स्कन्दः प्रणम्य सदाशिवं प्रणववपुषं साष्टत्रिंशत्कलावरलक्षितम्॥ सहितमुमया शश्वत्पार्श्वे मुनिप्रवरान्वितं गदितुमुपचक्राम श्रेयः श्रुतिष्वपि गोपितम् ॥ ५५ ॥
iti sa muninA pRSTaH skandaH praNamya sadAzivaM praNavavapuSaM sASTatriMzatkalAvaralakSitam॥ sahitamumayA zazvatpArzve munipravarAnvitaM gaditumupacakrAma zreyaH zrutiSvapi gopitam ॥ 55 ॥
Thus requested by the sage, Skanda bowed to Sadāśiva, the very praṇava itself who is characterised by thirty-eight excellent digits, who is accompanied by Umā at his side and who is followed by the excellent sages. He then began to expound the path of welfare well guarded in the Vedas.
