vyAsa uvAca ॥ gate'tha sUte munayassuvismitA vicintya cAnyonyamidantu vismRtam ॥ yadvAmadevasya matanmunIzvara pratyUcitantatkhalu naSTamadya naH ॥ 1 ॥
Vyāsa said:— When Sūta had left, the wondering sages thought and spoke to one another—“What the great sage said about Vāmadeva’s opinion has been forgotten. This is indeed distressing to us.

कदानुभूयान्मुनिवर्यदर्शनम्भावाब्धिदुःखौघहरम्परं हि तत् ॥ महेश्वराराधनपुण्यतोऽधुना मुनीश्वरस्सत्वरमाविरस्तु नः॥ २॥
kadAnubhUyAnmunivaryadarzanambhAvAbdhiduHkhaughaharamparaM hi tat ॥ mahezvarArAdhanapuNyato'dhunA munIzvarassatvaramAvirastu naH॥ 2॥
When shall we see the excellent sage again? His sight dispels the vast miseries of worldly existence. May the great sage appear again as a result of the merit accruing from the worship of lord Śiva.

इति चिन्तासमाविष्टा मुनयो मुनिपुंगवम्॥ व्यासं संपूज्य हृत्पद्मे तस्थुस्तद्दशर्नोत्सुकाः॥ ३॥
iti cintAsamAviSTA munayo munipuMgavam॥ vyAsaM saMpUjya hRtpadme tasthustaddazarnotsukAH॥ 3॥
The sages who were worried with these thoughts worshipped Sūta in the lotus of their heart and stayed there being eager to see him.

samvatsarAnte sa punaH kAzImprApa mahAmuniH ॥ zivabhaktirato jJAnI purANArthaprakAzakaH ॥ 4॥
At the end of a year, the sage, engaged in devotional activities of Śiva, the wise propounder of the meaning to the Purāṇas, came to Kāśī again.

tandRSTvA sUtamAyAntammunayo hRSTacetasaH ॥ abhyutthAnAsanArghyAdipUjayA samapUjayan ॥ 5॥
On seeing Sūta coming, the sages delighted in their minds, worshipped him duly rising up and offering seat and Arghya.

sopi tAnmunizArdUlAnabhinandya smitodaram ॥ prItyA snAtvA jAhnavIye jale paramapAvane ॥ 6 ॥
He too congratulated the sages with a smiling face. With pleasure he took the bath in the holy waters of the Gaṅgā.

ऋषीन्संतर्प्य च सुरान्पितॄंश्च तिलतण्डुलैः ॥ तीरमागत्य सम्प्रोक्ष्य वाससी परिधाय च ॥ ७ ॥
RSInsaMtarpya ca surAnpitRRMzca tilataNDulaiH ॥ tIramAgatya samprokSya vAsasI paridhAya ca ॥ 7 ॥
He propitiated the sages, the gods and the Pitṛs with gingelly seeds and rice grains. He came to the bank and put on his dress after sprinkling it with water.

द्विराचम्य समादाय भस्म सद्यादिमंत्रतः ॥ उद्धूलनादिक्रमतो विधार्य्याऽथ मुनीश्वरः ॥ ८॥
dvirAcamya samAdAya bhasma sadyAdimaMtrataH ॥ uddhUlanAdikramato vidhAryyA'tha munIzvaraH ॥ 8॥
After washing himself twice he collected the ashes and chanted the mantra Sadya and others. Then the sage should be placed in the order of lifting and so on.

रुद्राक्षमालाभरणः कृतनित्यक्रियस्सुधी ॥ यथोक्तांगेषु विधिना त्रिपुण्ड्रं रचति स्म ह ॥ ९॥
rudrAkSamAlAbharaNaH kRtanityakriyassudhI ॥ yathoktAMgeSu vidhinA tripuNDraM racati sma ha ॥ 9॥
He wore a garland of Rudraksha and was intelligent and performed daily rituals He would create a tripuṇḍra on the limbs as described above.

विश्वेश्वरमुमाकान्तं ससुतं सगणाधिपम् ॥ पूजयामास सद्भक्त्या ह्यस्तौ न्नत्वा मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ १० ॥
vizvezvaramumAkAntaM sasutaM sagaNAdhipam ॥ pUjayAmAsa sadbhaktyA hyastau nnatvA muhurmuhuH ॥ 10 ॥
With great devotion he eulogised, bowed to and worshipped lord Śiva and Umā along with his sons and chief Gaṇas.

कालभैरवनाथं च संपूज्याथ विधानतः ॥ प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य पुनस्त्रेधा नत्वा च पंचधा ॥ ११॥
kAlabhairavanAthaM ca saMpUjyAtha vidhAnataH ॥ pradakSiNIkRtya punastredhA natvA ca paMcadhA ॥ 11॥
Then worship Lord Kalabhairava in accordance with the prescribed rituals Having circumambulated him again he bowed in three parts and in five parts.

पुनः प्रदक्षिणी कृत्य प्रणम्य भुवि दण्डवत् ॥ तुष्टाव परया स्तुत्या संस्मरंस्तत्पदाम्बुजम् ॥ १२ ॥
punaH pradakSiNI kRtya praNamya bhuvi daNDavat ॥ tuSTAva parayA stutyA saMsmaraMstatpadAmbujam ॥ 12 ॥
Again he circumambulated the place and bowed down on the ground like a rod Remembering His lotus feet he praised Him with supreme praise.

श्रीमत्पंचाक्षरीम्विद्यामष्टोत्तरसहस्रकम्॥ संजप्य पुरतः स्थित्वा क्षमापय्य महेश्वरम् ॥ १३॥
zrImatpaMcAkSarImvidyAmaSTottarasahasrakam॥ saMjapya purataH sthitvA kSamApayya mahezvaram ॥ 13॥
The blessed five-letter knowledge is eighty-eight thousand. Having chanted the mantra he stood before him and forgave Lord Maheshwara.

चण्डेशं सम्प्रपूज्याऽथ मुक्तिमण्डपमध्यतः ॥ निर्द्दिष्टमासनं भेजे मुनिभिर्वेदपारगैः ॥ १४ ॥
caNDezaM samprapUjyA'tha muktimaNDapamadhyataH ॥ nirddiSTamAsanaM bheje munibhirvedapAragaiH ॥ 14 ॥
Then worship Lord Chandesha in the middle of the Mukti Mandapa He sat down on the seat designated by the sages well versed in the Vedas.

एवं स्थितेषु सर्वेषु नमस्कृत्य समंत्रकम् ॥ अथ प्राह मुनीन्द्राणां भाववृद्धिकरम्वच ॥ १५ ॥
evaM sthiteSu sarveSu namaskRtya samaMtrakam ॥ atha prAha munIndrANAM bhAvavRddhikaramvaca ॥ 15 ॥
When all had taken their seats after due obeisance with the recital of the mantras he spoke in accents that increased the piety of the sages.

सूत कृतः ॥ धन्या यूयं महाप्राज्ञा मुनयश्शंसितव्रताः ॥ भवदर्थमिह प्राप्तोऽहन्तद्वृत्तमिदं शृणु ॥ १६॥
sUta kRtaH ॥ dhanyA yUyaM mahAprAjJA munayazzaMsitavratAH ॥ bhavadarthamiha prApto'hantadvRttamidaM zRNu ॥ 16॥
Sūta said:— O intelligent sages, you all who have fulfilled your vows are blessed. I have come for your sake. Please listen in details.

यदाहमुपदिश्याथ भवतः प्रणवार्थकम्॥ गतस्तीर्थाटनार्थाय तद्वृत्तान्तम्ब्रवीमि वः ॥ १७ ॥
yadAhamupadizyAtha bhavataH praNavArthakam॥ gatastIrthATanArthAya tadvRttAntambravImi vaH ॥ 17 ॥
After telling you the meaning of the Praṇava I went on a pilgrimage. Now hear the details.

इतो निर्गत्य सम्प्राप्य तीरं दक्षपयोनिधेः ॥ स्नात्वा सम्पूज्य विधिवद्देवीं कन्यामयीं शिवाम् ॥ पुनरागत्य विप्रेन्द्रास्सुवर्णमुखरीतटम् ॥ १८ ॥
ito nirgatya samprApya tIraM dakSapayonidheH ॥ snAtvA sampUjya vidhivaddevIM kanyAmayIM zivAm ॥ punarAgatya viprendrAssuvarNamukharItaTam ॥ 18 ॥
O leading brahmans, after starting from here I went to the southern ocean. I took bath therein and worshipped the goddess Śivā, Kanyākumārī. On my return I came to the river Suvarṇamukharī.

zrIkAlahastizailAkhyanagare paramAdbhute ॥ suvarNamukharItoye snAtvA devAnRSInapi ॥ 19 ॥
It is situated in the most wonderful city called Śrīkālahastiśaila The devas and sages bathed in the waters of Suvarnamukhari.

सन्तर्प्य विधिवद्भक्त्या समुदं गिरिशं स्मरन् ॥ समर्च्य कालहस्तीशं चन्द्रकांतसमप्रभम् ॥ २० ॥
santarpya vidhivadbhaktyA samudaM girizaM smaran ॥ samarcya kAlahastIzaM candrakAMtasamaprabham ॥ 20 ॥
Having satisfied the ocean with devotion in accordance with rituals he remembered Lord Giriśa Having worshiped the lord of the elephant of time whose radiance was equal to that of the moon.

पश्चिमाभिमुखम्पंचशिरसम्परमाद्भुतम् ॥ सकृद्दर्शनमात्रेण सर्वाघक्षयकारणम् ॥ २१ ॥
pazcimAbhimukhampaMcazirasamparamAdbhutam ॥ sakRddarzanamAtreNa sarvAghakSayakAraNam ॥ 21 ॥
It is wonderful to have five heads facing west It is the cause of the destruction of all sins by merely seeing it once.

सर्वसिद्धिप्रदम्भुक्तिमुक्तिदन्त्रिगुणेश्वरम् ॥ ततश्च परया भक्त्या तस्य दक्षिणगां शिवाम् ॥ २२ ॥
sarvasiddhipradambhuktimuktidantriguNezvaram ॥ tatazca parayA bhaktyA tasya dakSiNagAM zivAm ॥ 22 ॥
He bestows all perfections, enjoys liberation and is the lord of the three modes of nature. Then with great devotion he took the auspicious southern river.

ज्ञानप्रसूनकलिकां समर्च्य हि जगत्प्रसूम् ॥ श्रीमत्पंचाक्षरीं विद्यामष्टोत्तरसहस्रकम् ॥ २३ ॥
jJAnaprasUnakalikAM samarcya hi jagatprasUm ॥ zrImatpaMcAkSarIM vidyAmaSTottarasahasrakam ॥ 23 ॥
Worship the bud of the flower of knowledge, the flower of the universe. The auspicious five-syllabled knowledge is eighty-eight thousand.

जप्त्वा प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य स्तुत्वा नत्वा मुहुर्मुहुः ॥ २४॥

After chanting the mantra, circumambulate the Lord, praise Him and bow down to Him again and again.

Then he circumambulated the mountain with reverence every day He seemed to rejoice in his mind and observed the rules.

O great sages, I spent four months there by the favour of the goddess—the bud of the flower of knowledge.

ekadA tu samAstIrya cailAjinakuzottaram ॥ AsanamparamantasminsthitvA ruddhendriyo muni ॥ 27 ॥
Once he spread out a blanket of cloth, deerskin and kusha grass. O sage, standing at the end of the seat, the senses were restrained.

समाधिमास्थाय सदा परमानंदचिद्धनः ॥ परिपूर्णश्शिवोस्मीति निर्व्यग्रहृदयोऽभवम् ॥ २८ ॥
samAdhimAsthAya sadA paramAnaMdaciddhanaH ॥ paripUrNazzivosmIti nirvyagrahRdayo'bhavam ॥ 28 ॥
He always remained in trance and became rich in supreme bliss. I became free from attachment, thinking that I was perfect and auspicious.

एतस्मिन्नेव समये सद्गुरुः करुणानिधिः ॥ नीलजीमूतसङ्काशो विद्युत्पिङ्गजटाधरः ॥ २९ ॥
etasminneva samaye sadguruH karuNAnidhiH ॥ nIlajImUtasaGkAzo vidyutpiGgajaTAdharaH ॥ 29 ॥
At this very moment the true teacher, the treasure of compassion, appeared. He looked like a blue cloud and had lightning-pink matted hair.

prAMzuH kamaNDalUddaNDakRSNAjinadharassvayam ॥ bhasmAvadAtasarvAGgassarvalakSaNalakSitaH ॥ 30॥
He was tall and wore a waterpot and a staff and black deerskin himself. His whole body was burnt to ashes and he was characterized by all the characteristics.

tripuNDravilasadbhAlo rudrAkSAlaGkRtAkRtiH ॥ padmapatrAruNAyAmavistIrNanayanadvayaH ॥ 31॥
He had a beautiful beard decorated with tripuṇḍra and was adorned with Rudraksha He had two eyes that were red like lotus petals.

He appeared in the lotus of my heart immediately The believers were bewildered by this wonderful sight.

Then I opened my eyes and began to cry. My tears were like a mountain stream.

Then a celestial unembodied voice was heard from the sky. It was wonderful. O brahmins, listen to that devotedly.

sUtaputra mahAbhAga gaccha vArANasImpurIm ॥ tatrAsanmunayaH pUrvamupadiSTAstvayA'dhunA ॥ 35 ॥
O most fortunate son of Suta go to the city of Varanasi There were sages there in the past whom you have now taught.

त्वदुपागमकल्याणं कांक्षंते विवशा भृशम् ॥ तिष्ठन्ति ते निराहारा इत्युक्त्वा विरराम सा ॥ ३६ ॥
tvadupAgamakalyANaM kAMkSaMte vivazA bhRzam ॥ tiSThanti te nirAhArA ityuktvA virarAma sA ॥ 36 ॥
They are desperately yearning for the welfare of your arrival. They are staying without food and she stopped.

tata utthAya tarasA devandevIJca bhaktitaH ॥ pradakSiNIkRtya punaH praNamya bhuvi daNDavat ॥ 37 ॥
Then he got up quickly and worshiped the gods and goddesses with devotion He circumambulated the place and again bowed down to the ground like a rod.

द्विषड्वारं गुरोराज्ञां विज्ञाय शिवयोरथ ॥ क्षेत्रान्निर्गत्य तरसा चत्वारिंशद्दिनान्तरे ॥ ३८ ॥
dviSaDvAraM gurorAjJAM vijJAya zivayoratha ॥ kSetrAnnirgatya tarasA catvAriMzaddinAntare ॥ 38 ॥
Twenty-six times he understood the command of his spiritual master and Lord Shiva. After forty days he quickly left the field.

I have come here O best of sages please be kind to me Please tell me what I have to say today.

iti sUtavacazzrutvA RSayo hRSTamAnasAH ॥ avocanmunizArdUlaM vyAsannatvA muhurmuhuH ॥ 40 ॥
On hearing the words of Sūta, the sages were delighted in their minds. They bowed to the sage Vyāsa again and again and said.
