vyAsa uvAca ॥ sAdhu pRSTamidaM viprA bhavadbhirbhAgyavattamaiH ॥ durlabhaM hi zivajJAnaM praNavArthaprakAzakam ॥ 1 ॥
Vyasa said. O brāhmaṇas you most fortunate ones have asked this well It is rare to know Lord Shiva which illuminates the meaning of the oṁkāra.

yeSAM prasanno bhagavAnsAkSAcchUlavarAyudhaH ॥ teSAmeva zivajJAnaM praNavArthaprakAzakama ॥ 2 ॥
The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who wields a trident and the best weapon, is pleased with them. Their very knowledge of Lord Shiva illuminates the meaning of the oṁkāra.

जायते न हि सन्देहो नेतरेषामिति श्रुतिः ॥। शिवभक्तिविहीनानामिति तत्त्वार्थनिश्चयः ॥ ३ ॥
jAyate na hi sandeho netareSAmiti zrutiH ॥। zivabhaktivihInAnAmiti tattvArthanizcayaH ॥ 3 ॥
There is no doubt that it is born and not others, as the scripture says. This is the conclusion of the true meaning of those devoid of devotion to Lord Shiva.

दीर्घसत्रेण युष्माभिर्भगवानम्बिकापतिः ॥ उपासित इतीदं मे दृष्टमद्य विनिश्चितम् ॥ ४॥
dIrghasatreNa yuSmAbhirbhagavAnambikApatiH ॥ upAsita itIdaM me dRSTamadya vinizcitam ॥ 4॥
Lord Śiva, consort of Ambā, has been adored by you by long sacrifices. This I see actually.

O devotees, I shall narrate to you an ancient story containing a wonderful dialogue between Umā and Śiva.

purAkhilajaganmAtA satI dAkSAyaNI tanum ॥ zivanindAprasaGgena tyaktvA ca janakAdhvare ॥ 6॥
In the past the chaste mother of the entire universe assumed the form of Dakshayani On the occasion of blasphemy against Lord Śiva he abandoned the sacrifice of Janaka.

ततः प्रभावात्सा देवी सुताऽभूद्धिमवद्गिरेः ॥ शिवार्थमतपत्सा वै नारदस्योपदेशतः ॥ ७॥
tataH prabhAvAtsA devI sutA'bhUddhimavadgireH ॥ zivArthamatapatsA vai nAradasyopadezataH ॥ 7॥
By the influence of the goddess she became the daughter of Himavat mountain She followed the advice of Narada for the sake of Lord Śiva.

तस्मिन्भूधरवर्य्ये तु स्वयंवरविधानतः॥ देवेशे च कृतोद्वाहे पार्वती सुखमाप सा ॥ ८॥
tasminbhUdharavaryye tu svayaMvaravidhAnataH॥ deveze ca kRtodvAhe pArvatI sukhamApa sA ॥ 8॥
तस्मिन्भूधरवर्य्ये तु स्वयंवरविधानतः॥ देवेशे च कृतोद्वाहे पार्वती सुखमाप सा ॥ ८॥

तथैकस्मिन्महादेवी समये पतिना सह ॥ सूपविष्टा महाशैले गौरी देवमभाषत॥ ९॥
tathaikasminmahAdevI samaye patinA saha ॥ sUpaviSTA mahAzaile gaurI devamabhASata॥ 9॥
Once she was cosily seated with lord Śiva on that great mountain. She spoke to the lord.

महादेव्युवाच ॥ भगवन्परमेशान पञ्चकृत्यविधायक ॥ सर्वज्ञ भक्तिसुलभ परमामृतविग्रह ॥ १० ॥
mahAdevyuvAca ॥ bhagavanparamezAna paJcakRtyavidhAyaka ॥ sarvajJa bhaktisulabha paramAmRtavigraha ॥ 10 ॥
Mahadevi said:- O Lord of the Supreme Lord, the five-acting creator. Omniscient, easy to devotee, the supreme nectar-form.

दाक्षायणीन्तनुं त्यक्त्वा तव निन्दाप्रसंगतः ॥ आसमद्य महेशान पुत्री हिमवतो गिरेः॥ ११॥
dAkSAyaNIntanuM tyaktvA tava nindAprasaMgataH ॥ Asamadya mahezAna putrI himavato gireH॥ 11॥
I have left the body of Dakshayani in connection with your condemnation O lord of the gods the daughter of the Himalayas was born today.

कृपया परमेशान मंत्रदीक्षाविधानतः ॥ मां विशुद्धात्मतत्त्वस्थां कुरु नित्यं महेश्वर ॥ १२॥
kRpayA paramezAna maMtradIkSAvidhAnataH ॥ mAM vizuddhAtmatattvasthAM kuru nityaM mahezvara ॥ 12॥
O lord, please make me merged in the principle of pure Ātman by duly initiating me in the Mantras.

इति सम्प्रार्थितो देव्या देवः शीतांशु भूषणः ॥ प्रत्युवाच ततो देवीं प्रहृष्टेनान्तरात्मना ॥ १३॥
iti samprArthito devyA devaH zItAMzu bhUSaNaH ॥ pratyuvAca tato devIM prahRSTenAntarAtmanA ॥ 13॥
Thus requested by the goddess the moon-crested lord replied to the goddess with a delighted mind.

महादेव उवाच ॥ धन्या त्वं देवदेवशि यदि जातेदृशी मतिः ॥ कैलास शिखरं गत्वा करिष्ये त्वां च तादृशीम् ॥ १४ ॥
mahAdeva uvAca ॥ dhanyA tvaM devadevazi yadi jAtedRzI matiH ॥ kailAsa zikharaM gatvA kariSye tvAM ca tAdRzIm ॥ 14 ॥
Lord Śiva said:— If your mind is thus diverted, O goddess, you are blessed indeed. I shall initiate you so after going to the summit of Kailāsa.

ततो हिमवतो गत्वा कैलासम्भूधरेश्वरम्॥ जगौ दीक्षाविधानेन प्रणवादीन्मनून् क्रमात् ॥ १५ ॥
tato himavato gatvA kailAsambhUdharezvaram॥ jagau dIkSAvidhAnena praNavAdInmanUn kramAt ॥ 15 ॥
Then after leaving Himavat and reaching Kailāsa, the lord of mountains, Śiva, recited mantras Praṇava and others in the proper order after duly initiating her.

उक्त्वा मंत्रांश्च तान्देवीं कृत्वा शुद्धात्मनि स्थिताम् ॥ सार्द्धं देव्या महादेवो देवोद्यानं गतोऽभवत् ॥ १६ ॥
uktvA maMtrAMzca tAndevIM kRtvA zuddhAtmani sthitAm ॥ sArddhaM devyA mahAdevo devodyAnaM gato'bhavat ॥ 16 ॥
Then making the goddess merged in the pure Ātman, lord Śiva went to his garden accompanied by the goddess.

ततः सुमालिनीमुख्यैर्दैव्याः प्रियसखीजनैः॥ समाहृतैः प्रफुल्लैस्तैः पुष्पैः कल्पतरूद्भवैः॥ १७॥
tataH sumAlinImukhyairdaivyAH priyasakhIjanaiH॥ samAhRtaiH praphullaistaiH puSpaiH kalpatarUdbhavaiH॥ 17॥
Then Sumalini and other divine beloved companions accompanied her The flowers from the Kalpa trees were gathered in bloom.

अलंकृत्य महादेवीं स्वांकमारोप्य शंकरः॥ प्रहृष्टवदनस्तस्थौ विलोक्य च तदाननम् ॥ १८ ॥
alaMkRtya mahAdevIM svAMkamAropya zaMkaraH॥ prahRSTavadanastasthau vilokya ca tadAnanam ॥ 18 ॥
Lord Śiva adorned the great goddess and placed her on his own. He stood there with a cheerful face and looked at her face.

ततः प्रियकथा जाताः पार्वतीपरमेशयोः ॥ हिताय सर्वलोकानां साक्षाच्छ्रुत्यर्थं सम्मिता ॥ १९॥
tataH priyakathA jAtAH pArvatIparamezayoH ॥ hitAya sarvalokAnAM sAkSAcchrutyarthaM sammitA ॥ 19॥
Then ensued the delightful discourse conformable to the Vedas between Pārvatī and lord Śiva. It was meant for the welfare of the world.

तदा सर्वजगन्माता भर्तुरंकं समाश्रिता ॥ विलोक्य वदनं भर्तुरिदमाहः तपोधनाः ॥ २० ॥
tadA sarvajaganmAtA bharturaMkaM samAzritA ॥ vilokya vadanaM bharturidamAhaH tapodhanAH ॥ 20 ॥
O ascetics, then the mother of the universe seated on the lap of her husband looked at the lord’s face and said.

॥ zrIdevyuvAca ॥ upadiSTAstvayA deva maMtrAssapraNavA matAH ॥ tatrAdau zrotumicchAmi praNavArthaM vinizcitam ॥ 23॥
The goddess said:— O lord, you have discoursed on the Mantras including the Praṇava. There at the outset I wish to know the meaning of the Praṇava.

pUjAyAM maNDalaM kiM vA kiM vA RSyAdikaM hara ॥ nyAsajAtavidhiH ko vA ko vA pUjAvidhikramaH ॥ 28 ॥
What is the mystic diagram of the worship? O Śiva, what are the sages and the rules regarding Nyāsa, Japa etc. What is the order of procedure in this worship?

etatsarvaM mahezAna samAcakSva vizeSataH ॥ zrotumicchAmi tattvena yadyasti mayi te kRpA ॥ 29 ॥
O lord Śiva, please mention these all particularly, if you have mercy on me. I wish to hear everything factually.

इति देव्या समापृष्टो भगवानिन्दुभूषणः ॥ सम्प्रशस्य महेशानीं वक्तुं समुपचक्रमे ॥ ३० ॥
iti devyA samApRSTo bhagavAnindubhUSaNaH ॥ samprazasya mahezAnIM vaktuM samupacakrame ॥ 30 ॥
Thus implored, the moon-crested lord praised the goddess and began to explain.
