namaH zivAya sAmbAya sagaNAya sasUnave॥ pradhAnapuruSezAya sargasthitatyantahetave ॥ 1 ॥
Obeisance to Śiva accompanied by Ambā, his sons and the Gaṇas, obeisance to the lord of Pradhāna and Puruṣa, obeisance to him who is the cause of creation, sustenance and dissolution.

The sages said:— The beautiful Umāsaṃhitā full of various anecdotes we have heard. Now narrate the Kailāsasaṃhitā that propagates Śiva’s tenets.

vyAsa uvAca ॥ ॥ zRNuta prItito vatsAH kailAsAkhyAM hi saMhitAm ॥ zivatattvaparAndivyAM vakSye vaH snehataH parAm॥ 3॥
Vyāsa said:— O dear, now listen with pleasure. Out of affection for you I shall narrate the divine Saṃhitā Kailāsa expounding Śiva’s tenets.

हिमवच्छिखरे पूर्व्वं तपस्यन्तो महौजसः ॥ वाराणसीङ्गन्तुकामा मुनयः कृतसम्विदः ॥ ४ ॥
himavacchikhare pUrvvaM tapasyanto mahaujasaH ॥ vArANasIGgantukAmA munayaH kRtasamvidaH ॥ 4 ॥
Formerly the sages of great power and splendour performing penances on the summit of Himavat desired to go to Vārāṇasī and decided accordingly.

nirgatya tasmAtsamprApya gireH kAzIM samAhitAH ॥ snAtavyameveti tadA dadRzurmaNikarNikAm॥ 5॥
They started from the mountain and reached Kāśī. They decided to bathe there and saw Maṇikarṇikā.

तत्र स्नात्वा सुसन्तप्य देवादीनथ जाह्नवीम् ॥ दृष्ट्वा स्नात्वा मुनीशास्ते विश्वेशं त्रिदशेश्वरम् ॥ ६ ॥
tatra snAtvA susantapya devAdInatha jAhnavIm ॥ dRSTvA snAtvA munIzAste vizvezaM tridazezvaram ॥ 6 ॥
After bathing there he performed ritualistic ceremonies for the devas and others and then went to the Jahnavi. Having seen Lord of the universe Lord of the gods the sages took their bath.

नमस्कृत्याथ सम्पूज्य भक्त्या परमयान्विताः ॥ शतरुद्रादिभिः स्तुत्वा स्तुतिभिर्व्वेदपारगाः ॥ ७॥
namaskRtyAtha sampUjya bhaktyA paramayAnvitAH ॥ zatarudrAdibhiH stutvA stutibhirvvedapAragAH ॥ 7॥
Then they offered obeisances and worshiped him with supreme devotion They were well versed in the Vedas and praised him with hymns such as Śatarudra and others.

आत्मानं मेनिरे सर्वे कृतार्था वयमित्युत ॥ शिवप्रीत्या सुपूर्णार्थाश्शिवभक्तिरतास्सदा॥ ८॥
AtmAnaM menire sarve kRtArthA vayamityuta ॥ zivaprItyA supUrNArthAzzivabhaktiratAssadA॥ 8॥
They all thought themselves satisfied They are always devoted to Shiva and are well-fulfilled in their devotion to Shiva.

tasminnavasare sUtaM paJcakrozadidRkSayA ॥ gatvA samAgataM vIkSya mudA te taM vavandire॥ 9 ॥
In the meantime Sūta who had left his hermitage to visit Pañcakrośa reached there. On seeing him the joyous sages paid obeisance to him.

sopi vizvezvaraM sAkSAddevadevamumApatim ॥ namaskRtyAtha taissAkammuktimaNDapamAvizat ॥ 10॥
After bowing to Viśveśvara, the lord of gods, the consort of Umā, Sūta entered the Muktimaṇḍapa along with them.

tatrAsInammahAtmAnaM sUtampaurANikottamam ॥ arghyAdibhistadA sarvve munayassamupAcaran ॥ 11॥
When Sūta the great soul, the excellent of the Paurāṇikas took his seat, the sages paid respects to him with Arghya and other ingredients of worship.

tataH sUtaH prasannAtmA munInAlokya suvratAn ॥ papraccha kuzalAntepi procuH kuzalamAtmanaH॥ 12॥
The delighted Sūta saw the sages of auspicious rites and enquired after their health and welfare. They replied suitably.

ते तु संहृष्टहृदयं ज्ञात्वा तं वै मुनीश्वराः ॥ प्रणवार्थावगत्यर्थमूचुः प्रास्ताविकं वचः ॥ १३॥
te tu saMhRSTahRdayaM jJAtvA taM vai munIzvarAH ॥ praNavArthAvagatyarthamUcuH prAstAvikaM vacaH ॥ 13॥
On seeing him pleased at heart the sages spoke in relevance to the context, in order to know the meaning of Praṇava.

मुनय ऊचुः ॥ व्यासशिष्य महाभाग सूत पौराणिकोत्तम॥ धन्यस्त्वं शिवभक्तो हि सर्वविज्ञान सागरः ॥ १४॥
munaya UcuH ॥ vyAsaziSya mahAbhAga sUta paurANikottama॥ dhanyastvaM zivabhakto hi sarvavijJAna sAgaraH ॥ 14॥
The sages said:— O blessed disciple of Vyāsa, O Sūta the best among the Paurāṇikas, you are a great devotee of Śiva, the ocean of perfect knowledge.

भवन्तमेव भगवान्व्यासस्सर्वजगद्गुरुः ॥ अभिषिच्य पुराणानां गुरुत्वे समयोजयत्॥ १५॥
bhavantameva bhagavAnvyAsassarvajagadguruH ॥ abhiSicya purANAnAM gurutve samayojayat॥ 15॥
Lord Vyāsa, the preceptor of the universe has crowned you as the chief of the Paurāṇikas and made you the propounder of the Purāṇas.

तस्मात्पौराणिकी विद्या भवतो हृदि संस्थिता॥ पुराणानि च सर्वाणि वेदार्थम्प्रवदन्ति हि ॥ १६॥
tasmAtpaurANikI vidyA bhavato hRdi saMsthitA॥ purANAni ca sarvANi vedArthampravadanti hi ॥ 16॥
The Purāṇic lore is firmly set in your heart. Indeed the Purāṇas explain the meaning of the Vedas.

वेदाः प्रणवसम्भूताः प्रणवार्थो महेश्वरः॥ अतो महेश्वरस्थानं त्वयि धिष्ण्यम्प्रतिष्ठितम् ॥ १७॥
vedAH praNavasambhUtAH praNavArtho mahezvaraH॥ ato mahezvarasthAnaM tvayi dhiSNyampratiSThitam ॥ 17॥
Vedas arise from the Praṇava. The Praṇava is lord Śiva. Hence you are the permanent abode of lord Śiva’s stay.

त्वन्मुखाब्जपरिस्यन्दन्मकरंदे मनोहरम् ॥ प्रणवार्थामृतं पीत्वा भविष्यामो गतज्वराः ॥ १८ ॥
tvanmukhAbjaparisyandanmakaraMde manoharam ॥ praNavArthAmRtaM pItvA bhaviSyAmo gatajvarAH ॥ 18 ॥
We shall be free from illness after we have drunk the nectar of Praṇava which is as sweet and pleasing as the honey oozing out of your lotus-mouth.

विशेषतो गुरुस्त्वं हि नान्योऽस्माकं महामते॥ परं भावं महेशस्य परया कृपया वद॥ १९॥
vizeSato gurustvaM hi nAnyo'smAkaM mahAmate॥ paraM bhAvaM mahezasya parayA kRpayA vada॥ 19॥
O intelligent one, you alone are our preceptor, none else. Out of compassion please narrate the nature of lord Śiva.

iti teSAM vacaH zrutvA sUto vyAsapriyassudhIH॥ gaNezaM SaNmukhaM sAkSAnmahezAnaM mahezvarIm ॥ 20॥
Having heard their words the prudent charioteer who was dear to Vyasa The six-faced Lord Ganesha is directly the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

शिलादतनयं देवं नन्दीशं सुयशापतिम् ॥ सनत्कुमारं व्यासं च प्रणिपत्येदमब्रवीत्॥ २१॥
zilAdatanayaM devaM nandIzaM suyazApatim ॥ sanatkumAraM vyAsaM ca praNipatyedamabravIt॥ 21॥
He was the son of Shilada and the lord of Nandi and the lord of Suyasha He bowed to Sanatkumara and Vyasa and said these words.

सूत उवाच॥ साधुसाधु महाभागा मुनयः क्षीणकल्मषाः॥ मतिर्दृढतरा जाता दुर्लभा सापि दुष्कृताम्॥ २२॥
sUta uvAca॥ sAdhusAdhu mahAbhAgA munayaH kSINakalmaSAH॥ matirdRDhatarA jAtA durlabhA sApi duSkRtAm॥ 22॥
Sūta said:— Well done, well done, O blessed sages, your sins have been quelled. Your minds are steadied. It is rare in persons of evil deeds.

पाराशर्येण गुरुणा नैमिषारण्यवासिनाम्॥ मुनीनामुपदिष्टं यद्वक्ष्ये तन्मुनिपुंगवाः॥ २३॥
pArAzaryeNa guruNA naimiSAraNyavAsinAm॥ munInAmupadiSTaM yadvakSye tanmunipuMgavAH॥ 23॥
Paraśarya, the spiritual master of the inhabitants of the forest of Naimiṣāraṇya. O preeminent sages I shall now describe what has been taught by the sages.

यस्य श्रवणमात्रेण शिवभक्तिर्भवेन्नृणाम्॥ सावधाना भवन्तोद्य शृण्वन्तु परया मुदा॥ २४॥
yasya zravaNamAtreNa zivabhaktirbhavennRNAm॥ sAvadhAnA bhavantodya zRNvantu parayA mudA॥ 24॥
By merely hearing of him men attain devotion to Lord Siva. Be careful and listen today with great joy.

स्वारोचिषेन्तरे पूर्वं तपस्यंतो दृढव्रताः॥ ऋषयो नैमिषारण्ये सर्वसिद्धनिषेविते॥ २५॥
svArociSentare pUrvaM tapasyaMto dRDhavratAH॥ RSayo naimiSAraNye sarvasiddhaniSevite॥ 25॥
They were firm in their vows and performed austerities in the past during the interval of their own brightness. The sages lived in the forest of Naimisha served by all the Siddhas.

दीर्घसत्रं वितन्वन्तो रुद्रमध्वरनायकम् ॥ प्रीणयन्तः परं भावमैश्वर्य्यं ज्ञातुमिच्छवः॥ २६॥
dIrghasatraM vitanvanto rudramadhvaranAyakam ॥ prINayantaH paraM bhAvamaizvaryyaM jJAtumicchavaH॥ 26॥
They extended a long sacrifice to Rudra, the leader of the sacrifices. Pleasing the Supreme Being and desiring to know the opulence.

निवसन्ति स्म ते सर्वे व्यासदर्शनकांक्षिणः ॥ शिवभक्तिरता नित्यं भस्मरुद्राक्षधारिणः ॥ २७ ॥
nivasanti sma te sarve vyAsadarzanakAMkSiNaH ॥ zivabhaktiratA nityaM bhasmarudrAkSadhAriNaH ॥ 27 ॥
All of them lived there eager to see Vyasa They were always devoted to Lord Shiva and wore ashes and rudraksha.

तेषां भावं समालोक्य भगवान्बादरायणः ॥ प्रादुर्बभूव सर्वात्मा पराशरतपःफलम् ॥ २८ ॥
teSAM bhAvaM samAlokya bhagavAnbAdarAyaNaH ॥ prAdurbabhUva sarvAtmA parAzaratapaHphalam ॥ 28 ॥
Observing their eagerness, lord Bādarāyaṇa, the soul of all, the fruit of the penance of Parāśara appeared before them.

On seeing him the sages were delighted with beaming eyes and faces. They stood up and welcomed him with reverence.

सत्कृत्य प्रददुस्तस्मै सौवर्णं विष्टरं शुभम् ॥ सुखोपविष्टः स तदा तस्मिन्सौवर्णविष्टरे ॥ प्राह गंभीरया वाचा पाराशर्य्यो महामुनिः ॥ ३० ॥
satkRtya pradadustasmai sauvarNaM viSTaraM zubham ॥ sukhopaviSTaH sa tadA tasminsauvarNaviSTare ॥ prAha gaMbhIrayA vAcA pArAzaryyo mahAmuniH ॥ 30 ॥
With due hospitality they offered him a golden scat. Seated cosily on the golden seat the sage Vyāsa spoke majestically.

व्यास उवाच ॥ कुशलं किं नु युष्माकम्प्रब्रूतास्मिन्महामखे ॥ अर्चितं किं नु युष्माभिस्सम्यगध्वरनायकः ॥ ३१॥
vyAsa uvAca ॥ kuzalaM kiM nu yuSmAkamprabrUtAsminmahAmakhe ॥ arcitaM kiM nu yuSmAbhissamyagadhvaranAyakaH ॥ 31॥
Vyāsa said:— Hope you are quite well. Please say. Has the leader of the sacrifices been worshipped well by you in this sacrifice?

किमर्थमत्र युष्माभिरध्वरे परमेश्वरः॥ स्वर्चितो भक्तिभावेन साम्बस्संसारमोचकः ॥ ३२॥
kimarthamatra yuSmAbhiradhvare paramezvaraH॥ svarcito bhaktibhAvena sAmbassaMsAramocakaH ॥ 32॥
Why lord Śiva accompanied by Ambā, the lord who releases from worldly bondage has been worshipped with due devotion by you all in this sacrifice.

युष्मत्प्रवृत्तिर्मे भाति शुश्रूषा पूर्वमेव हि ॥ परभावे महेशस्य मुक्तिहेतोश्शिवस्य च ॥ ३३ ॥
yuSmatpravRttirme bhAti zuzrUSA pUrvameva hi ॥ parabhAve mahezasya muktihetozzivasya ca ॥ 33 ॥
Your activity seems to me to be the outcome of your desire to hear more of the great nature of lord Śiva, the cause of salvation.

एवमुक्ता मुनीन्द्रेण व्यासेनामिततेजसा ॥ मुनयो नैमिषारण्यवासिनः परमौजसः ॥ ३४ ॥
evamuktA munIndreNa vyAsenAmitatejasA ॥ munayo naimiSAraNyavAsinaH paramaujasaH ॥ 34 ॥
Thus addressed by the great sage Vyasa of immeasurable splendor The sages who lived in the forest of Naimisha were very powerful.

प्रणिपत्य महात्मानं पाराशशर्य्यं महामुनिम् ॥ शिवानुरागसंहृष्टमानसं च तमब्रुवन् ॥ ३५॥
praNipatya mahAtmAnaM pArAzazaryyaM mahAmunim ॥ zivAnurAgasaMhRSTamAnasaM ca tamabruvan ॥ 35॥
I bowed down to the great sage Parashasharya They addressed him whose mind was delighted with his devotion to Lord Śiva.

munaya UcuH ॥ ॥ bhagavanmunizArdUla sAkSAnnArAyaNAMzaja॥ kRpAnidhe mahAprAjJa sarvavidyAdhipa prabho ॥ 36 ॥
The sages said:- O divine tiger among ascetics you are directly a descendant of Narayana O treasure of mercy, greatly wise and master of all knowledge, O master.

त्वं हि सर्वजगद्भर्तुर्महा देवस्य वेधसः ॥ साम्बस्य सगणस्यास्य प्रसादानां निधिस्स्वयम् ॥ ३७ ॥
tvaM hi sarvajagadbharturmahA devasya vedhasaH ॥ sAmbasya sagaNasyAsya prasAdAnAM nidhissvayam ॥ 37 ॥
You are indeed the creator of the great god Vedhasa the lord of the entire universe He is the treasure trove of the graces of Samba and his host.

त्वत्पादाब्जरसास्वादमधुपायितमानसाः ॥ कृतार्था वयमद्यैव भवत्पादाब्जदर्शनात् ॥ ३८ ॥
tvatpAdAbjarasAsvAdamadhupAyitamAnasAH ॥ kRtArthA vayamadyaiva bhavatpAdAbjadarzanAt ॥ 38 ॥
Our minds have been yearning for the sight of your lotus feet even as the bees yearn for the touch of lotus flowers. We are now satisfied by the vision of your lotus feet.

त्वदीयचरणाम्भोजदर्शनं खलु पापिनाम् ॥ दुर्लभं लब्धमस्माभिस्त्वस्मात्सुकृतिनो वयम् ॥ ३९ ॥
tvadIyacaraNAmbhojadarzanaM khalu pApinAm ॥ durlabhaM labdhamasmAbhistvasmAtsukRtino vayam ॥ 39 ॥
Inaccessible indeed is the sight of your lotus feet to the sinners. Since now we have obtained it we are really fortunate.

asmindeze mahAbhAga naimiSAraNyasaMjJake ॥ dIrghasatrAnvitAssarve praNavArthaprakAzakAH ॥ 40 ॥
