प्र कृ॒तान्यृ॑जी॒षिणः॒ कण्वा॒ इन्द्र॑स्य॒ गाथ॑या । मदे॒ सोम॑स्य वोचत
pra kṛtānyṛjīṣiṇaḥ kaṇvā indrasya gāthayā made somasya vocata
For the resolute chanters, Kanva spoke a hymn in praise of Indra; thus he addressed you, O Soma.

यः सृबि॑न्द॒मन॑र्शनिं॒ पिप्रुं॑ दा॒सम॑ही॒शुव॑म् । वधी॑दु॒ग्रो रि॒णन्न॒पः
yaḥ sṛbindamanarśaniṃ pipruṃ dāsamahīśuvam vadhīdugro riṇannapaḥ
He who pours forth the shower-bearing cloud and quickens the ground like the tenfold season, struck down the fierce foeman and the waters.

nyarbudasya viṣṭapaṃ varṣmāṇaṃ bṛhatastira kṛṣe tadindra pauṃsyam
He made the overflowing, mighty stream of the spring to bear great rains; for Indra he grew the bounty of the pastures.

prati śrutāya vo dhṛṣattūrṇāśaṃ na gireradhi huve suśipramūtaye
At your hearing he lifted a resolute song, swift beyond the mountain’s summit; he spoke for the mighty awakening.

sa goraśvasya vi vrajaṃ mandānaḥ somyebhyaḥ puraṃ na śūra darṣasi
He who is mild among kine and steeds gave you the pasture; O hero, you beheld the town with courage for the Soma-drinkers.

yadi me rāraṇaḥ suta ukthe vā dadhase canaḥ ārādupa svadhā gahi
If my neighbor has dashed out the clay or set down the mortar, then take up your libation and grasp the oblation.

We are for you even now, O chanter; singer Indra of song. You strengthen us, O somadrinkers.

So may the fatherly bearer fill us, unseen streams of riches; O generous one, plentiful are your treasures.

May the Ashvins, rich in cow-like wealth and golden splendour, bestow upon us with blessings from Ila.

bṛbadukthaṃ havāmahe sṛprakarasnamūtaye sādhu kṛṇvantamavase
We invoke the well-spoken hymn, offering it aloud for the swift and for the multitude; make fitting what is beneficial for us.

yaḥ saṃsthe cicchatakraturādīṃ kṛṇoti vṛtrahā jaritṛbhyaḥ purūvasuḥ
He who, at the appointed rite, fashioned the first powerful sacrificial act and slew Vṛtra, gave the ancient praise to the priests.

sa naḥ śakraścidā śakaddānavām̐ antarābharaḥ indro viśvābhirūtibhiḥ
He became for us Shakra and wielder of power, the giver swift as a flood against the fiends; Indra, praised by all outpourings.

He who brought the great wealth from the earth, the friend who goes forth with the brave, him we sing to Indra.

May steadiness come into the great interior, laudable among men; may the abundant lord of vitality come forth.

He does not speak the boastful word of the shameless, nor does he give false utterance to the deceitful.

na nūnaṃ brahmaṇāmṛṇaṃ prāśūnāmasti sunvatām na somo apratā pape
There is indeed no death for the mighty ones of Brahman who are nourished by sacred draughts; Soma is not blameworthy of transgression.

Let praise put forth songs and hymns; let Brahman make praise—thus let it be instilled.

panya ā dardiracchatā sahasrā vājyavṛtaḥ indro yo yajvano vṛdhaḥ
When many are endowed with wealth and with thousands of cattle, Indra, the vigorous sacrificer, grows mighty in strength.

The oblations and the sacred libations follow the swift ploughing—Indra drinks the streams of the pressed juices.

He who drinks with the offerings of the swift ones, he whom I extol, Indra grants your reward.

Come hither, O drink, to the assembly of men who preserve the sacrificial rites; drink this night’s pure draught.

Here are three times of offering, here five peoples in excess; the cows answered Indra with words.

sūryo raśmiṃ yathā sṛjā tvā yacchantu me giraḥ nimnamāpo na sadhryak
As the sun spreads its rays, may the hymns I utter bring you forth; may the downward waters not be dispersed.

The carriers sprinkled Soma for the heroic, quickly, to fill the cup of the born one.

I struck down Vritra’s violent host, the spoil-bearing mountain’s fierce band; with frost I overthrew the obstructer.

He who unites all laws in Soma’s intoxication, blind with pride—Indra perceives among the gods.

Here is the righteous one, fair-haired, with golden locks; may the blessings come to you for the boats.

arvāñcaṃ tvā puruṣṭuta priyamedhastutā harī somapeyāya vakṣataḥ
I have praised you, O beloved with abundant thought; may the Soma-drinker speak in your defense.
