bhūyo devagaṇaśreṣṭha śivamāhātmyamuttamam| śṛṇvato nāsti me tṛptistva dvākyāmṛtapānataḥ||
Sanatkumāra said: Once again, O most excellent one among Devas, let me hear the greatness of Śiva. I am not satiated by listening to the excellent greatness of Śiva. I am not satisfied fully with your present nectarine speech.

कथं शरीरी भगवान कस्माद्रुद्रः प्रतापवान। सर्वात्मा च कथं शम्भुः कथं पाशुपतं व्रतम।।
kathaṃ śarīrī bhagavān kasmādrudraḥ pratāpavān| sarvātmā ca kathaṃ śambhuḥ kathaṃ pāśupataṃ vratam||
Sanatkumāra said: Once again, O most excellent one among Devas, let me hear the greatness of Śiva. I am not satiated by listening to the excellent greatness of Śiva. I am not satisfied fully with your present nectarine speech.

कथं वा देवमुख्यैश्च श्रुतो दृष्टश्च शङ्करः। अव्यक्तादभवत्स्थाणुः शिवः परमकारणम।।
kathaṃ vā devamukhyaiśca śruto dṛṣṭaśca śaṅkaraḥ| avyaktādabhavatsthāṇuḥ śivaḥ paramakāraṇam||
Sanatkumāra said: Once again, O most excellent one among Devas, let me hear the greatness of Śiva. I am not satiated by listening to the excellent greatness of Śiva. I am not satisfied fully with your present nectarine speech.

स सर्वकारणोपेत ऋपिर्विश्वाविकः प्रभुः। देवानां प्रथमं देवं जायमानं मुखाम्बुजात।।
sa sarvakāraṇopeta ṛpirviśvāvikaḥ prabhuḥ| devānāṃ prathamaṃ devaṃ jāyamānaṃ mukhāmbujāt||
Śailādi said: He was a lordly sage superior to the universe. He was the sage equipped with all causes. At the outset, he saw Brahmā, the first[1] Deva born out of his lotus-face. He glanced at him by way of command.[2] On being seen by Rudra, he, the lord of Devas, created everything.

ददर्श चाग्रे ब्रह्माणं चाज्ञया तमवैक्षत। दृष्टो रुद्रेण देवेशः ससर्ज सकलं च सः।।
dadarśa cāgre brahmāṇaṃ cājñayā tamavaikṣata| dṛṣṭo rudreṇa deveśaḥ sasarja sakalaṃ ca saḥ||
Śailādi said: He was a lordly sage superior to the universe. He was the sage equipped with all causes. At the outset, he saw Brahmā, the first[1] Deva born out of his lotus-face. He glanced at him by way of command.[2] On being seen by Rudra, he, the lord of Devas, created everything.

वर्णाश्रमव्यवस्थाश्च स्थापयामास वै विराट। सोमं ससर्ज यज्ञार्थं सोमादिदमजायत।।
varṇāśramavyavasthāśca sthāpayāmāsa vai virāṭ| somaṃ sasarja yajñārthaṃ somādidamajāyata||
Śailādi said: The Virāj (immense Being) established the order of the castes and stages of life. For the sake of sacrifice, he created the soma juice. All these originated from the soma juice: the sacrificial offering, fire, sacrifice, lord Indra the consort of Śacī armed with the thunderbolt, Viṣṇu, Nārāyaṇa the glorious being and the entire earth identical with soma.

चरुश्च वह्निर्यज्ञश्च वज्रपाणिः शचीपतिः। विष्णुर्नारायणः श्रीमान सर्वं सोममयं जगत।।
caruśca vahniryajñaśca vajrapāṇiḥ śacīpatiḥ| viṣṇurnārāyaṇaḥ śrīmān sarvaṃ somamayaṃ jagat||
Śailādi said: The Virāj (immense Being) established the order of the castes and stages of life. For the sake of sacrifice, he created the soma juice. रुद्राध्यायेन ते देवा रुद्रं तुष्टुवुरीश्वरम। प्रसन्नवदनस्तस्थौ देवानां मध्यतः प्रभुः।।
rudrādhyāyena te devā rudraṃ tuṣṭuvurīśvaram| prasannavadanastasthau devānāṃ madhyataḥ prabhuḥ||
Śailādi said: Devas eulogised lord Rudra by reciting the Rudrādhyāya. The lord stood in the midst of Devas with his face beaming with pleasure. It was as though the great lord took away their wisdom.

अपहृत्य च विज्ञानमेषामेव महेश्वरः। देवा ह्यपृच्छंस्तं देवं को भवानिति शङ्करम।।
apahṛtya ca vijñānameṣāmeva maheśvaraḥ| devā hyapṛcchaṃstaṃ devaṃ ko bhavāniti śaṅkaram||
Śailādi said: Devas eulogised lord Rudra by reciting the Rudrādhyāya. The lord stood in the midst of Devas with his face beaming with pleasure. It was as though the great lord took away their wisdom.

अब्रवीद्भगवान्रुद्रो ह्यहमेकः पुरातनः। आसं प्रथम एवाहं वर्तामि च सुरोत्तमाः।।
abravīdbhagavānrudro hyahamekaḥ purātanaḥ| āsaṃ prathama evāhaṃ vartāmi ca surottamāḥ||
Śailādi said: Lord Rudra said:—“O excellent Devas, I was the sole ancient Being. I continue to be the first among all beings.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 11

भविष्यामि च लोके ऽस्मिन्मत्तो नान्यः कुतश्चन। व्यतिरिक्तं न मत्तो ऽस्ति नान्यत्किञ्चित्सुरोत्तमाः।।
bhaviṣyāmi ca loke 'sminmatto nānyaḥ kutaścana| vyatiriktaṃ na matto 'sti nānyatkiñcitsurottamāḥ||
Śailādi said: I will be so in this world. There is nothing other than myself. There is nothing separate from me.[4] O excellent Devas, there is nothing else.

नित्यो ऽनित्यो ऽहमनघो ब्राह्माहं ब्रह्मणस्पतिः। दिशश्च विदिशश्चाहं प्रकृतिश्च पुमानहम।।
nityo 'nityo 'hamanagho brāhmāhaṃ brahmaṇaspatiḥ| diśaśca vidiśaścāhaṃ prakṛtiśca pumānaham||
Śailādi said: I am both eternal and non-eternal. I am the sinless Brahmā as also the lord of Brahmā. I am the quarters as well as the intermediary direction. I am Prakṛti as well as Puruṣa.

त्रिष्टुब्जगत्यनुष्टुप च च्छन्दोहं तन्मयः शिवः। सत्योहं सर्वगः शान्तस्त्रेताग्निर्गौरवं गुरुः।।
triṣṭubjagatyanuṣṭup ca cchandohaṃ tanmayaḥ śivaḥ| satyohaṃ sarvagaḥ śāntastretāgnirgauravaṃ guruḥ||
Śailādi said: I am Triṣṭup, Jagatī and Anuṣṭup metres of prosody. I am the omnipresent Truth, the tranquil one. I am the threefold sacrificial fire. I am the preceptor as well as preceptorhood.

गौरहं गह्वरश्चाहं नित्यं गहनगोचरः। ज्येष्ठोहं सर्वतत्त्वानां वरिष्ठोहमपां पतिः।।
gaurahaṃ gahvaraścāhaṃ nityaṃ gahanagocaraḥ| jyeṣṭhohaṃ sarvatattvānāṃ variṣṭhohamapāṃ patiḥ||
Śailādi said: I am the cow. I am the cavity. I am always perceptible in the impenetrable depth. I am the eldest and best of all the principles. I am the lord of the waters.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 15

आपोहं भगवानीशस्तेजोहं वेदिरप्यहम। ऋग्वेदोहं यजुर्वेदः सामवेदोहमात्मभूः।।
āpohaṃ bhagavānīśastejohaṃ vedirapyaham| ṛgvedohaṃ yajurvedaḥ sāmavedohamātmabhūḥ||
Śailādi said: I am the waters; lord Īśa; fiery brilliance, the sacrificial altar; I am the Ṛgveda, the Yajurveda, the Sāmaveda. I am the self-born deity.[5]

अथर्वणोहं मन्त्रोहं तथा चाङ्गिरसां वरः। इतिहासपुराणानि कल्पोहं कल्पनाप्यहम।।
atharvaṇohaṃ mantrohaṃ tathā cāṅgirasāṃ varaḥ| itihāsapurāṇāni kalpohaṃ kalpanāpyaham||
Śailādi said: I am the Atharvaveda, the mantra, the most excellent among the Aṅgiras. I am the Itihāsa, the Purāṇa; the Kalpa[6] (science of Rituals) as well as the Kalpanā (imagination).

अक्षरं च क्षरं चाहं क्षान्तिः शान्तिरहं क्षमा। गुह्योहं सर्ववेदेषु वरेण्योहमजोप्यहम।।
akṣaraṃ ca kṣaraṃ cāhaṃ kṣāntiḥ śāntirahaṃ kṣamā| guhyohaṃ sarvavedeṣu vareṇyohamajopyaham||
Śailādi said: I am the imperishable and perishable; I am forgiveness, calmness, forbearance, the secret of all the Vedas, the most excellent and the unborn one.

पुष्करं च पवित्रं च मध्यं चाहं ततः परम। बहिश्चाहं तथा चान्तः पुरस्तादहमव्ययः।।
puṣkaraṃ ca pavitraṃ ca madhyaṃ cāhaṃ tataḥ param| bahiścāhaṃ tathā cāntaḥ purastādahamavyayaḥ||
Śailādi said: I am the holy Puṣkara. I am the middle and beyond it. I am the exterior and interior. I am the unchanging one in front.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 19

ज्योतिश्चाहं तमश्चाहं ब्रह्मा विष्णुर्महेश्वरः। बुद्धिश्चाहमहङ्कारस्तन्मात्राणीन्द्रियाणि च।।
jyotiścāhaṃ tamaścāhaṃ brahmā viṣṇurmaheśvaraḥ| buddhiścāhamahaṅkārastanmātrāṇīndriyāṇi ca||
Śailādi said: I am the brilliant light as well as darkness. I am Brahmā, Viṣṇu and Maheśvara. I am the cosmic intellect, ego, subtle elements and the sense-organs.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 20

एवं सर्वं च मामेव यो वेद सुर सत्तमाः। स एव सर्ववित्सर्वं सर्वात्मा परमेश्वरः।।
evaṃ sarvaṃ ca māmeva yo veda sura sattamāḥ| sa eva sarvavitsarvaṃ sarvātmā parameśvaraḥ||
Śailādi said: O excellent Devas, he who knows everything to be myself, is alone omniscient,[7] Parameśvara, the soul of all.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 21

गां गोभिर्ब्राह्मणान्सर्वान्ब्रह्मण्येन हवींषि च। आयुषायुस्तथा सत्यं सत्येन सुरसत्तमाः।।
gāṃ gobhirbrāhmaṇānsarvānbrahmaṇyena havīṃṣi ca| āyuṣāyustathā satyaṃ satyena surasattamāḥ||
Śailādi said: O excellent Devas, by means of my brilliance, I propitiate the cow by means of the cows; the brahmins by means of the brahminical power; longevity and offerings by means of longevity; truth by means of truth[8] and Dharma by means of Dharma. I propitiate all by my own brilliance.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 22

धर्मं धर्मेण सर्वांश्च तर्पयामि स्वतेजसा। इत्यादौ भगवानुक्त्वा तत्रैवान्तरधीयत।।
dharmaṃ dharmeṇa sarvāṃśca tarpayāmi svatejasā| ityādau bhagavānuktvā tatraivāntaradhīyata||
Śailādi said: O excellent Devas, by means of my brilliance, I propitiate the cow by means of the cows; the brahmins by means of the brahminical power; longevity and offerings by means of longevity; truth by means of truth[8] and Dharma by means of Dharma. I propitiate all by my own brilliance.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 23

नापश्यन्त ततो देवं रुद्रं परमकारणम। ते देवाः परमात्मानं रुद्रं ध्यायन्ति शङ्करम।।
nāpaśyanta tato devaṃ rudraṃ paramakāraṇam| te devāḥ paramātmānaṃ rudraṃ dhyāyanti śaṅkaram||
Śailādi said: Thereupon, Devas did not see lord Rudra. Including Nārāyaṇa and Indra, Devas and sages meditated upon him who was the greatest Ātman and the greatest cause. With their arms raised up, they praised and propitiated him.
The greatness of Śiva - Verse 24

सनारायणका देवाः सेंद्राश्च मुनयस्तथा। तथोर्ध्वबाहवो देवा रुद्रं स्तुन्वन्ति संकरम।।
sanārāyaṇakā devāḥ seṃdrāśca munayastathā| tathordhvabāhavo devā rudraṃ stunvanti saṃkaram||
Śailādi said: Thereupon, Devas did not see lord Rudra. Including Nārāyaṇa and Indra, Devas and sages meditated upon him who was the greatest Ātman and the greatest cause. With their arms raised up, they praised and propitiated him.
