pañca brahmāṇi me nandinnācakṣva gaṇasattama| śreyaḥkaraṇabhūtāni pavitrāṇi śarīriṇām||
Sanatkumāra said: O Nandin, the most excellent among the Gaṇas, recount to me the five Brahmans, that cause welfare and that sanctify all the embodied beings.

शिवस्यैव स्वरूपाणि पञ्च ब्रह्माह्वयानि ते। कथयामि यथातत्त्वं पद्मयोनेः सुतोत्तम।।
śivasyaiva svarūpāṇi pañca brahmāhvayāni te| kathayāmi yathātattvaṃ padmayoneḥ sutottama||
Nandikeśvara said: O most excellent one among the sons of the lotus-born deity, I shall precisely recount to you the five forms of Śiva himself, called the “Pañca Brahmans.”[1]

सर्वलोकैकसंहर्ता सर्वलोकैकरक्षिता। सर्वलोकैकनिर्माता पञ्चब्रह्मात्मकः शविः।।
sarvalokaikasaṃhartā sarvalokaikarakṣitā| sarvalokaikanirmātā pañcabrahmātmakaḥ śaviḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Śiva identical with the Pañca-Brahmans, is the sole creator, the sole protector and the sole annihilator of all the worlds.

सर्वेषामेव लोकानां यदुपादानकारणम। निमित्तकारणं चाहुस्स शिवः पञ्चधा स्मृतः।।
sarveṣāmeva lokānāṃ yadupādānakāraṇam| nimittakāraṇaṃ cāhussa śivaḥ pañcadhā smṛtaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: They say that Śiva is both the material as well as the efficient cause of all the worlds. That Śiva is said to be of five forms.

mūrtayaḥ pañca vikhyātāḥ pañca brahmāhvayāḥ parāḥ| sarvalokaśaraṇyasya śivasya paramātmanaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The great forms of Śiva the greatest Ātman, worthy of being the refuge of all the worlds are five. They are known by the name Pañca Brahmans.

क्षेत्रज्ञः प्रथमा मूर्तिशिवस्य परमेष्ठिनः। भोक्ता प्रकृतिवर्गस्य भोग्यस्येशानसंज्ञितः।।
kṣetrajñaḥ prathamā mūrtiśivasya parameṣṭhinaḥ| bhoktā prakṛtivargasya bhogyasyeśānasaṃjñitaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The first form of Śiva Parameṣṭhin is termed Īśāna. He is Kṣetrajña the knower of the field and the enjoyer of Prakṛti that is worthy of being enjoyed.

स्थाणोस्तत्पुरुषाख्या च द्वितीया मूर्तिरुच्यते। प्रकृतिः सा हि विज्ञेया परमात्मगुहात्मिका।।
sthāṇostatpuruṣākhyā ca dvitīyā mūrtirucyate| prakṛtiḥ sā hi vijñeyā paramātmaguhātmikā||
Nandikeśvara said: What is called Tatpuruṣa is said to be the second physical form of the lord. That is identical with Prakṛti as the residence of the supreme soul.

अघोराख्या तृतीया च शंभोर्मूर्तिर्गरीयसी। बुद्धेः सा मूर्तिरित्युक्ता धर्माद्यष्टाङ्गसंयुता।।
aghorākhyā tṛtīyā ca śaṃbhormūrtirgarīyasī| buddheḥ sā mūrtirityuktā dharmādyaṣṭāṅgasaṃyutā||
Nandikeśvara said: What is called Aghora is the third important physical form of the lord. It is the physical form pertaining to the cosmic intellect and it has eight ancillary parts beginning with Dharma.

चतुर्थी वामदेवाख्या मूर्तिः शंभोर्गरियसी। अहङ्कारात्मकत्वेन व्याप्य सर्वं व्यवस्थिता।।
caturthī vāmadevākhyā mūrtiḥ śaṃbhorgariyasī| ahaṅkārātmakatvena vyāpya sarvaṃ vyavasthitā||
Nandikeśvara said: What is called Vāmadeva is the fourth important physical form of the lord. It pervades everything in the form of ego.

सद्योजाताह्वया शंभोः पचमी मूर्तिरुच्यते। मनस्तत्त्वात्मकत्वेन स्थिता सर्वशरीरिषु।।
sadyojātāhvayā śaṃbhoḥ pacamī mūrtirucyate| manastattvātmakatvena sthitā sarvaśarīriṣu||
Nandikeśvara said: What is called Sadyojāta is the fifth physical form of the lord. It is stationed in all embodied beings in the form of the mind.

ईशानः परमो देवः परमेष्ठी सनातनः। श्रोत्रेन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन सर्वभूतेष्ववस्थितः।।
īśānaḥ paramo devaḥ parameṣṭhī sanātanaḥ| śrotrendriyātmakatvena sarvabhūteṣvavasthitaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The greatest lord Īśāna is the eternal Parameṣṭhin. He is stationed in all living beings in the form of the senseorgan ear.

स्थितस्तत्पुरुषो देवः शरीरेषु शरीरिणाम। त्वगिन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन तत्त्वविद्भिरुदाहृतः।।
sthitastatpuruṣo devaḥ śarīreṣu śarīriṇām| tvagindriyātmakatvena tattvavidbhirudāhṛtaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Lord Tatpuruṣa is stationed in the bodies of the embodied beings in the form of the sense-organs of touch.

अघोरोपि महादेवश्चक्षुरात्मतया बुधैः। कीर्तितः सर्वभूतानां शरीरेषु व्यवस्थितः।।
aghoropi mahādevaścakṣurātmatayā budhaiḥ| kīrtitaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ śarīreṣu vyavasthitaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The great lord Aghora is glorified by the learned as stationed in the eyes in the bodies of all living beings.

जिह्वेन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन वामदेवोपि विश्रुतः। अङ्गभाजामशेषाणामङ्गेषुं परिधिष्ठितः।।
jihvendriyātmakatvena vāmadevopi viśrutaḥ| aṅgabhājāmaśeṣāṇāmaṅgeṣuṃ paridhiṣṭhitaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Vāmadeva is known as firmly established in the senseorgan tongue in the parts of the embodied beings.

घ्राणेन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन सद्योजातः स्मृतो बुधैः। प्राणभाजां समस्तानां विग्रहेषु व्यवस्थितः।।
ghrāṇendriyātmakatvena sadyojātaḥ smṛto budhaiḥ| prāṇabhājāṃ samastānāṃ vigraheṣu vyavasthitaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: It is mentioned that Sadyojāta is stationed in the bodies of all living beings in the form of the sense-organ of smell.

सर्वेष्वेव शरीरेषु प्राणभाजां प्रतिष्ठितः। वागिन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन बुधैरीशान उच्यते।।
sarveṣveva śarīreṣu prāṇabhājāṃ pratiṣṭhitaḥ| vāgindriyātmakatvena budhairīśāna ucyate||
Nandikeśvara said: It is said that Īśāna is stationed in all the bodies of living beings in the form of the organ of speech.

पाणीन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन स्थितस्तत्पुरुषो बुधैः। उच्यते विग्रहेष्वेव सर्वविग्रहधारिणाम।।
pāṇīndriyātmakatvena sthitastatpuruṣo budhaiḥ| ucyate vigraheṣveva sarvavigrahadhāriṇām||
Nandikeśvara said: Learned men say that Tatpuruṣa is stationed in the bodies of all embodied persons in the form of the organ of action, the hands.

सर्वविग्रहिणां देहे ह्यघोरोपि व्यवस्थितः। पादेन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन कीर्तितस तत्त्ववेदिभिः।।
sarvavigrahiṇāṃ dehe hyaghoropi vyavasthitaḥ| pādendriyātmakatvena kīrtitas tattvavedibhiḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Those who know the truth say that Aghora is stationed in the bodies of all living beings in the form of the organ of action, the feet.

पाय्विन्द्रियात्मकत्वेन वामदेवो व्यवस्थितः। सर्वभूतनिकायानां कायेषु मुनिभिः स्मृतः।।
pāyvindriyātmakatvena vāmadevo vyavasthitaḥ| sarvabhūtanikāyānāṃ kāyeṣu munibhiḥ smṛtaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Sages say that Vāmadeva is stationed in the bodies of all living beings in the form of the organ of action, the rectum.
The five Brahmans - Verse 20

उपस्थात्मतया देवः सद्योजातः स्थितः प्रभुः। इष्यते वेदशास्त्रज्ञैर्देहेषु प्राणधारिणाम।।
upasthātmatayā devaḥ sadyojātaḥ sthitaḥ prabhuḥ| iṣyate vedaśāstrajñairdeheṣu prāṇadhāriṇām||
Nandikeśvara said: Lord Sadyojāta is stationed in the bodies of all living beings in the form of the organ of generation. It is said by those who are conversant with the Vedic and scriptural texts.

ईशानं प्राणिनां देवं शब्दतन्मात्ररूपिणम। आकाशजनकं प्राहुर्मुनिवृन्दारकप्रजाः।।
īśānaṃ prāṇināṃ devaṃ śabdatanmātrarūpiṇam| ākāśajanakaṃ prāhurmunivṛndārakaprajāḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The sages and Devas mention that lord Īśāna is the lord of living beings, that he is of the subtle form of sound and is the cause of the firmament.

प्राहुस्तत्पुरुषं देवं स्पर्शतन्मात्रकात्मकम। समीरजनकं प्राहुर्भगवन्तं मुनीश्वराः।।
prāhustatpuruṣaṃ devaṃ sparśatanmātrakātmakam| samīrajanakaṃ prāhurbhagavantaṃ munīśvarāḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Leading sages say that lord Tatpuruṣa is in the subtle form of touch and is the cause of the wind.

रूपतन्मात्रकं देवमघोरमपि घोरकम। प्राहुर्वेदविदो मुख्या जनकं जातवेदसः।।
rūpatanmātrakaṃ devamaghoramapi ghorakam| prāhurvedavido mukhyā janakaṃ jātavedasaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Persons conversant with the Vedas say that the terrible lord Aghora in the subtle form of Rūpa is the cause of the fiery element.

रसतन्मात्ररूपत्वात प्रथितं तत्त्ववेदिनः। वामदेवमपां प्राहुर्जनकत्वेन संस्थितम।।
rasatanmātrarūpatvāt prathitaṃ tattvavedinaḥ| vāmadevamapāṃ prāhurjanakatvena saṃsthitam||
Nandikeśvara said: Those who know the real principles say that the well-known lord Vāmadeva being in the subtle form of Rasa is the cause of the waters.

सद्योजातं महादेवं गन्धतन्मात्ररूपिणम। भूम्यात्मानं प्रशंसंति सर्वतत्त्वार्थवेदिनः।।
sadyojātaṃ mahādevaṃ gandhatanmātrarūpiṇam| bhūmyātmānaṃ praśaṃsaṃti sarvatattvārthavedinaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: All those who know the real principles praise the great lord Sadyojāta as the cause of the earth element in the subtle form of smell.

आकाशात्मानमीशानमादिदेवं मुनीश्वराः। परमेण महत्त्वेन संभूतं प्राहुरद्भुतम।।
ākāśātmānamīśānamādidevaṃ munīśvarāḥ| parameṇa mahattvena saṃbhūtaṃ prāhuradbhutam||
Nandikeśvara said: Leading sages say that the primordial lord Īśāna is the wonderful entity in the form of the firmament.

प्रभुं तत्पुरुषं देवं पवनं पवनात्मकम। समस्तलोकव्यापित्वात्प्रथितं सूरयो विदुः।।
prabhuṃ tatpuruṣaṃ devaṃ pavanaṃ pavanātmakam| samastalokavyāpitvātprathitaṃ sūrayo viduḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The wise know that lord Tatpuruṣa is the Wind, in view of his pervading all the worlds.

अथार्चिततया ख्यातमघोरं दहनात्मकम। कथयन्ति महात्मानं वेदवाक्यार्थवेदिनः।।
athārcitatayā khyātamaghoraṃ dahanātmakam| kathayanti mahātmānaṃ vedavākyārthavedinaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Those who know the meanings of the Vedic texts speak of the noble-souied Aghora as having the form of the fire worshipped by all.

तोयात्मकं महादेवं वामदेवं मनोरमंम। जगत्संजीवनत्वेन कथितं मुनयो विदुः।।
toyātmakaṃ mahādevaṃ vāmadevaṃ manoramaṃm| jagatsaṃjīvanatvena kathitaṃ munayo viduḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: In view of his enlivening nature in regard to the Universe, the sages know the great lord Vāmadeva as having the form of water. They mention him to be pleasing to the mind

विश्वंभरात्मकं देवं सद्योजातं जगद्गुरुम। चराचरेकभर्तारं परं कविवरा विदुः।।
viśvaṃbharātmakaṃ devaṃ sadyojātaṃ jagadgurum| carācarekabhartāraṃ paraṃ kavivarā viduḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Wise men know that lord Sadyojāta is in the form of the earth. He is the preceptor of the world. He is the sole great sustainer of the universe consisting of the mobile and immobile beings.

Nandikeśvara said: Wise men know that lord Sadyojāta is in the form of the earth. He is the preceptor of the world. He is the sole great sustainer of the universe consisting of the mobile and immobile beings.

pañcaviṃśatitattvātmā prapañce yaḥ pradṛśyate| pañcabrahmātmakatvena sa śivo nānyatāṃ gataḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Wise men know that lord Sadyojāta is in the form of the earth. He is the preceptor of the world. He is the sole great sustainer of the universe consisting of the mobile and immobile beings.

pañcaviṃśatitattvātmā pañcabrahmātmakaḥ śivaḥ| śreyorthibhirato nityaṃ cintanīyaḥ prayatnataḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Wise men know that lord Sadyojāta is in the form of the earth. He is the preceptor of the world. He is the sole great sustainer of the universe consisting of the mobile and immobile beings.
