Sanatkumāra said: O leader of the Gaṇas, of great intellect, recount to me the eight cosmic forms of Śaṅkara the great Atman, the lord of universal forms.

Nandikeśvara said: O son of the lotus-born deity, verily will I recount the greatness of the consort of Umā, the lord of universal forms.

bhūr āpo ḥgnir marud vyoma bhāskaro dīkṣitaḥ śaśī| bhavasya mūrtayaḥ proktāḥ śivasya parameṣṭhanaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The following too viz.—the earth, waters, fire, wind firmament, sun, moon and the sacrificer are the physical forms of the lord Śiva.

खात्मेन्दुवह्निसूर्यांभोधराः पवन इत्यपि। तस्याष्ट मूर्तयः प्रोक्ता देवदेवस्य धीमतः।।
khātmenduvahnisūryāṃbhodharāḥ pavana ityapi| tasyāṣṭa mūrtayaḥ proktā devadevasya dhīmataḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The following too, viz:—the firmament, Ātman, moon, fire, sun, waters, earth and wind are the eight[1] physical forms of the intelligent lord of Devas.

Nandikeśvara said: Hence, when Agnihotra is dedicated unto the great lord of the nature of the sun, his emanations Devas, pitṛs, etc. become satiated.

वृक्षस्य मूलसेकेन यथा शाखोपशाखिकाः। तथा तस्यार्चया देवास तथा स्युस तद्विभूतयः।।
vṛkṣasya mūlasekena yathā śākhopaśākhikāḥ| tathā tasyārcayā devās tathā syus tadvibhūtayaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Just as the branches and twigs of a tree are also propitiated when the root is watered so also Devas and the emanations of the lord are all propitiated through his worship.

तस्य द्वादशधा भिन्नं रूपं सूर्यात्मकं प्रभोः। सर्वदेवात्मकं याज्यं यजान्ति मुनिपुङ्गवाः।।
tasya dvādaśadhā bhinnaṃ rūpaṃ sūryātmakaṃ prabhoḥ| sarvadevātmakaṃ yājyaṃ yajānti munipuṅgavāḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Leading sages worship the solar form of the lord that has twelve[2] aspects and is worthy of worship and is identical with Devas.

अमृताख्या कला तस्य सर्वस्यादित्यरूपिणः। भूतसंजीवनी चेष्टा लोकोस्मिन पीयते सदा।।
amṛtākhyā kalā tasya sarvasyādityarūpiṇaḥ| bhūtasaṃjīvanī ceṣṭā lokosmin pīyate sadā||
Nandikeśvara said: The digit named Amṛta belonging to the lord in the form of the sun is beneficial to this world as one enlivening the living beings. They drink it always.

चन्द्राख्यकिरणास्तस्य धूर्जटेर्भास्करात्मनः। ओषधीनां विवृद्ध्यर्थं हिमवृष्टिं वितन्वते।।
candrākhyakiraṇāstasya dhūrjaṭerbhāskarātmanaḥ| oṣadhīnāṃ vivṛddhyarthaṃ himavṛṣṭiṃ vitanvate||
Nandikeśvara said: The rays named Candras belonging to Dhūrjaṭi of the form of the sun, create shower of snow for the growth of the medicinal herbs.

सुक्लाख्यारश्मयस्तस्य शंभोर्मार्तण्डरूपिणः। धर्मं वितन्वते लोके सस्यपाकादिकारणम।।
suklākhyāraśmayastasya śaṃbhormārtaṇḍarūpiṇaḥ| dharmaṃ vitanvate loke sasyapākādikāraṇam||
Nandikeśvara said: The rays named Śuklas belonging to the lord in the form of the sun create heat which is the cause of maturity and ripeness of plants as well as grains.

Nandikeśvara said: The ray named Harikeśa, belonging to the lord in the form of the sun is the cause of development and nourishment of the stars.

Nandikeśvara said: The ray named Viśvakarman belonging to the lord in the form of the sun nourishes Budha (Mercury).

Nandikeśvara said: The ray of the trident-bearing lord in the form of the sun, that is known as Viśvavyaca is the nourisher of Śukra (Venus).

संयद्वसुरीति ख्यातो यस्य रश्मिस्त्रिशूलिनः। लोहिताङ्गं प्रपुष्णाति सहस्रकिरणात्मनः।।
saṃyadvasurīti khyāto yasya raśmistriśūlinaḥ| lohitāṅgaṃ prapuṣṇāti sahasrakiraṇātmanaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The ray that is known as Samyadvasu, belonging to the trident-bearing lord in the form of the thousand-rayed sun is the nourisher of Mars.

अर्वावसुरीति ख्यातो रश्मिस्तस्य पिनाकिनः। बृहस्पतिं प्रपुष्णाति सर्वदा तपनात्मनः।।
arvāvasurīti khyāto raśmistasya pinākinaḥ| bṛhaspatiṃ prapuṣṇāti sarvadā tapanātmanaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The ray that is known as Arvāvasu, belonging to the Pināka-bearing lord in the form of the sun, develops Bṛhaspati (Jupiter) always.

स्वराडिति समाख्यातः शिवस्यांशुः शनैश्चरम। हरिदश्वात्मनस्तस्य प्रपुष्णाति दिवानिशम।।
svarāḍiti samākhyātaḥ śivasyāṃśuḥ śanaiścaram| haridaśvātmanastasya prapuṣṇāti divāniśam||
Nandikeśvara said: The ray known as Svarāṭ, belonging to Śiva of the form of the sun nourishes Śanaiścara (Saturn) by day and night.

सूर्यात्मकस्य देवस्य विश्वयोनेरुमापतेः। सुषुम्णाख्यः सदा रश्मिः पुष्णाति शिशिरद्युतिम।।
sūryātmakasya devasya viśvayonerumāpateḥ| suṣumṇākhyaḥ sadā raśmiḥ puṣṇāti śiśiradyutim||
Nandikeśvara said: The ray known as Suṣumnā belonging to the lord, the consort of Umā, the source of origin of the universe and solar in form, develops the moon always.

सौम्यानां वसुजातानां प्रकृतित्वमुपागता। तस्य सोमाह्वया मूर्तिः शङ्करस्य जगद्गुरोः।।
saumyānāṃ vasujātānāṃ prakṛtitvamupāgatā| tasya somāhvayā mūrtiḥ śaṅkarasya jagadguroḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The form named Soma belonging to Śaṅkara the preceptor of the universe is the material cause of the universe.

तस्य सोमात्मक रूप शुक्रत्वेन व्यवस्थितम। शरीरभाजां सर्वेषां देवस्यान्तकशासिनः।।
tasya somātmaka rūpa śukratvena vyavasthitam| śarīrabhājāṃ sarveṣāṃ devasyāntakaśāsinaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The lunar form of the lord the slayer of Death is stationed in all embodied beings in the form of the semen.

शरीरिणामशेषाणां मनस्येव व्यवस्थितम। वपुः सोमात्मकं शंभोस्तस्य सर्वजगद्गुरोः।।
śarīriṇāmaśeṣāṇāṃ manasyeva vyavasthitam| vapuḥ somātmakaṃ śaṃbhostasya sarvajagadguroḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The body in the nature of the moon belonging to the lord, the preceptor of the universe is stationed in the minds of all embodied beings.

शंभोः षोडशधाभिन्ना स्थितामृतकलात्मनः। सर्वभूतशरीरेषु सोमाख्या मूर्तिरुत्तमा।।
śaṃbhoḥ ṣoḍaśadhābhinnā sthitāmṛtakalātmanaḥ| sarvabhūtaśarīreṣu somākhyā mūrtiruttamā||
Nandikeśvara said: The physical form of the lord named Soma is the most excellent among the bodies in all living beings. It is stationed in the form of the nectarine digit in sixteen parts.[3]

देवान्पितॄंश च पुष्णाति सुधयामृतया सदा। मूर्तिः सोमाह्वया तस्य देवदेवस्य शासितुः।।
devānpitṝṃś ca puṣṇāti sudhayāmṛtayā sadā| mūrtiḥ somāhvayā tasya devadevasya śāsituḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The form named Soma, belonging to the divine ruler, the lord of Devas, nourishes Devas and Pitṛs always by means of ṭhe immortal nectar.

पुष्णात्योषधिजातानि देहिनामात्मशुद्धये। सोमाह्वया तनुस्तस्य भवानीमिति निर्दिशेत।।
puṣṇātyoṣadhijātāni dehināmātmaśuddhaye| somāhvayā tanustasya bhavānīmiti nirdiśet||
Nandikeśvara said: The physical form of the lord named Soma nourishes clusters of medicinal herbs for the purity of the souls of all embodied beings. This form is called Bhavānī.

यज्ञानां पतिभावेन जीवानां तपसामपि। प्रसिद्धरूपमेतद्वै मोमात्मकमुमापतेः।।
yajñānāṃ patibhāvena jīvānāṃ tapasāmapi| prasiddharūpametadvai momātmakamumāpateḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The form of the consort of Umā in the nature of the Moon is known as the lord of the individual souls, sacrifices and austerities.

जलानामोषधीनां च पतिभावेन विश्रुतम। सोमात्मकं वपुस्तस्य शंभोर्भगवतः प्रभोः।।
jalānāmoṣadhīnāṃ ca patibhāvena viśrutam| somātmakaṃ vapustasya śaṃbhorbhagavataḥ prabhoḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The physical form of lunar nature belonging to the lord is known as the lord of waters and medicinal herbs.
The cosmic form of Śiva - Verse 26

देवो हिरण्मयो मृष्टः परस्परविवेकिनः। करणानामशेषाणां देवतानां निराकृतिः।।
devo hiraṇmayo mṛṣṭaḥ parasparavivekinaḥ| karaṇānāmaśeṣāṇāṃ devatānāṃ nirākṛtiḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The nectarine lord is beyond the grasp of the senses or even of their presiding deities or of those who are expert in discriminating between the sentient and the insentient. When lord Śiva of the lunar form is stationed as the individual soul, the sweet Māyā (prakṛti)[4] which is the sole protector of all the worlds withdraws herself.

जीवत्वेन स्थिते तस्मिञ्छिवे सोमात्मके प्रभौ। मधुरा विलयं याति सर्वलोकैकरक्षिणी।।
jīvatvena sthite tasmiñchive somātmake prabhau| madhurā vilayaṃ yāti sarvalokaikarakṣiṇī||
Nandikeśvara said: The nectarine lord is beyond the grasp of the senses or even of their presiding deities or of those who are expert in discriminating between the sentient and the insentient. Nandikeśvara said: The physical form Yajamāna (the sacrificial priest) belonging to Śiva nourishes by day and night all the deities by means of Havyas and all the Pitṛs by means of Kavyas. Then this physical form Yajamāna, propitiates the mobile and immobile beings by means of the shower of waters[5] caused by the sacrificial offering.

यजमानाह्वया या सा तनुश्चाहुतिजा तया। वृष्ट्या भावयति स्पष्टं सर्वमेव परापरम।।

Nandikeśvara said: The physical form Yajamāna (the sacrificial priest) belonging to Śiva nourishes by day and night all the deities by means of Havyas and all the Pitṛs by means of Kavyas. Then this physical form Yajamāna, propitiates the mobile and immobile beings by means of the shower of waters[5] caused by the sacrificial offering.

अन्तःस्थं च बहिःस्थं च ब्रह्माण्डानां स्थितं जलम। भूतानां च शरीरस्थं शंभोर्मूर्तिर्गरीयसी।।
antaḥsthaṃ ca bahiḥsthaṃ ca brahmāṇḍānāṃ sthitaṃ jalam| bhūtānāṃ ca śarīrasthaṃ śaṃbhormūrtirgarīyasī||
Nandikeśvara said: The water that is within and without the universe and the water that is within the physical body of all living beings constitutes the great physical (watery) form of the lord Śiva.

नदीनाममृतं साक्षान्नदानामपि सर्वदा। समुद्राणां च सर्वत्र व्यापी सर्वमुमापतिः।।
nadīnāmamṛtaṃ sākṣānnadānāmapi sarvadā| samudrāṇāṃ ca sarvatra vyāpī sarvamumāpatiḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The nectar-like water of the rivers and the streams and the ubiquitous water of the oceans constitute the physical form of the consort of Umā.

संजीविनी समस्तानां भूतानामेव पाविनी। अंबिका प्राणसंस्था या मूर्तिलंबुमयी परा।।
saṃjīvinī samastānāṃ bhūtānāmeva pāvinī| aṃbikā prāṇasaṃsthā yā mūrtilaṃbumayī parā||
Nandikeśvara said: This body enlivens and sanctifies all living beings. It is stationed in the vital airs. It is of the form of the moon.[6]

अन्तःस्थश च बहिःस्थश च ब्रह्माण्डानां विभावसुः। यज्ञानां च शरीरस्थः शंभोर्मूर्तिर्गरीयसी।।
antaḥsthaś ca bahiḥsthaś ca brahmāṇḍānāṃ vibhāvasuḥ| yajñānāṃ ca śarīrasthaḥ śaṃbhormūrtirgarīyasī||
Nandikeśvara said: The fire that is situated within and without the universe, the fire that is stationed in the body of the sacrifice constitutes his physical form.
The cosmic form of Śiva - Verse 34

शरीरस्था च भूतानां श्रेयसी मूर्तिरैश्वरी। मूर्तिः पावक संस्था या शंभोरत्यन्तपूजिता।।
śarīrasthā ca bhūtānāṃ śreyasī mūrtiraiśvarī| mūrtiḥ pāvaka saṃsthā yā śaṃbhoratyantapūjitā||
Nandikeśvara said: The physical form of the lord, the form that is excessively honoured and worshipped is stationed in the bodies of living beings for their welfare.

भेदा एकोनपञ्चाशद्वेदविद्भिरुदाहृताः। हव्यं वहति देवानां शंभोर्यज्ञात्मकं वपुः।।
bhedā ekonapañcāśadvedavidbhirudāhṛtāḥ| havyaṃ vahati devānāṃ śaṃbhoryajñātmakaṃ vapuḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The physical form of the lord in the nature of fire and identical with all Devas is the most excellent one. Its forty-nine[7] subdivisions are cited by those who know the Vedas. The lord’s physical body in the form of the sacrificial fire carries Havya to Devas. The fire used by the twice-born for Homas carries Kavya to the pitṛs.
The cosmic form of Śiva - Verse 36

कव्यं पितृगणानां च हूयमानं द्विजातिभिः। सर्वदेवमयं शंभोः श्रेष्ठमग्यात्मकं वपुः।।
kavyaṃ pitṛgaṇānāṃ ca hūyamānaṃ dvijātibhiḥ| sarvadevamayaṃ śaṃbhoḥ śreṣṭhamagyātmakaṃ vapuḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The physical form of the lord in the nature of fire and identical with all Devas is the most excellent one. Its forty-nine[7] subdivisions are cited by those who know the Vedas. The lord’s physical body in the form of the sacrificial fire carries Havya to Devas. The fire used by the twice-born for Homas carries Kavya to the pitṛs.

वदन्ति वेदशास्त्रज्ञा यजन्ति च यथाविधि। अन्तःस्थो जगदण्डानां बहिःस्थश्च समीरणः।।
vadanti vedaśāstrajñā yajanti ca yathāvidhi| antaḥstho jagadaṇḍānāṃ bahiḥsthaśca samīraṇaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Those who are conversant with the Vedas and the ancillary texts speak about these and worship them.

शरीरस्थश्च भूतानां शैवी मूर्तिः पटीयसी। प्राणाद्या नागकूर्माद्या आवहाद्याश्च वायवः।।
śarīrasthaśca bhūtānāṃ śaivī mūrtiḥ paṭīyasī| prāṇādyā nāgakūrmādyā āvahādyāśca vāyavaḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: Those who are conversant with the Vedas and the ancillary texts speak about these and worship them.

ईशानमूर्तेरेकस्य भेदाः सर्वे प्रकीर्तिताः। अन्तःस्थं जगदण्डानां बहिःस्थं च वियद्विभोः।।
īśānamūrterekasya bhedāḥ sarve prakīrtitāḥ| antaḥsthaṃ jagadaṇḍānāṃ bahiḥsthaṃ ca viyadvibhoḥ||
Nandikeśvara said: The ether, that is within and without the universe as well as that stationed in the bodies of living beings constitutes the powerful body of lord Śiva.

शरीरस्थं च भूतानां शंभोमूर्तिर्गरीयसी। शंभोर्विश्वंभरा मूर्तिः सर्वब्रह्माधिदेवता।।
śarīrasthaṃ ca bhūtānāṃ śaṃbhomūrtirgarīyasī| śaṃbhorviśvaṃbharā mūrtiḥ sarvabrahmādhidevatā||
Nandikeśvara said: The ether, that is within and without the universe as well as that stationed in the bodies of living beings constitutes the powerful body of lord Śiva.

Nandikeśvara said: This form (i.e. ātman) is stationed in the bodies of all mobile and immobile beings. The leading sages call the Ātman as Dīkṣita (one initiated). It is the body of Siva, the bestower of auspiciousness; it is called Yajamāna as well. All these eight bodies of Śiva should always be worshipped assiduously by men who seek welfare. They are the sole causes of welfare.
