nṛtyārambhaḥ kathaṃ śaṃbhoḥ kimarthaṃ vā yathātatham| vaktumarhasi cāsmākaṃ śrutaḥ skandāgrajodbhavaḥ||
The sages said: We have heard about the nativity of the elder brother of Skanda. It behoves you now to tell us precisely wherefore and how Lord Siva begins his Taṇḍava dance.

दारुको ऽसुरसम्भूतस तपसा लब्धविक्रमः। सूदयामास कालाग्निर इव देवान्द्विजोत्तमान।।
dāruko 'surasambhūtas tapasā labdhavikramaḥ| sūdayāmāsa kālāgnir iva devāndvijottamān||
Sūta said: Dāruka born in the family of Asuras attained heroism through his penance. Like the fire at the end of a yuga he killed Devas as well as brahmins.

दारुकेण तदा देवास ताडिताः पीडिता भृशम। ब्रह्माणं च तथेशानं कुमारं विष्णुमेव च।।
dārukeṇa tadā devās tāḍitāḥ pīḍitā bhṛśam| brahmāṇaṃ ca tatheśānaṃ kumāraṃ viṣṇumeva ca||
Sūta said: Devas were extremely afflicted and hurt by Dāruka. They sought refuge in Brahmā, Īśāna, Kumāra, Viṣṇu, Yama and Indra. Knowing that the Asura could be killed only by a woman, he was confronted in a battle by Indra[1] and others in fine guises of women. Still they were overwhelmed by him. O brahmins, they approached Brahmā and acquainted him with everything. Accompanied by Brahmā they approached the lord of Umā. With Brahmā at the forefront, they eulogised him. Approaching the lord of Devas and bowing to him in diverse ways Brahmā said:—“O lord, the demon Dāruka is a terrible fellow. We have been defeated by him at the outset. It behoves you to protect us by killing Dāruka who is destined to be killed by a lady.

विज्ञप्तिं ब्रह्मणः श्रुत्वा भगवान भगनेत्रहा। देवीमुवाच देवेशो गिरिजां प्रहसन्निव।।
vijñaptiṃ brahmaṇaḥ śrutvā bhagavān bhaganetrahā| devīmuvāca deveśo girijāṃ prahasanniva||
Sūta said: On hearing this submission of Brahmā the lord who destroyed the eyes of Bhaga, said laughingly to the goddess, the daughter of the mountain-lord.

भवतीं प्रार्थयाम्यद्य हिताय जगतां शुभे। वधार्थं दारुकस्यास्य स्त्रीवध्यस्य वरानने।।
bhavatīṃ prārthayāmyadya hitāya jagatāṃ śubhe| vadhārthaṃ dārukasyāsya strīvadhyasya varānane||
Sūta said: O splendid and good-looking lady, I am now requesting you for the welfare of the worlds to slay Dāruka who is destined to be killed by a lady.

अथ सा तस्य वचनं निशम्य जगतो ऽरणिः। विवेश देहे देवस्य देवेशी जन्मतत्परा।।
atha sā tasya vacanaṃ niśamya jagato 'raṇiḥ| viveśa dehe devasya deveśī janmatatparā||
Sūta said: On hearing his words, the goddess[2] entered the body of the lord, she being desirous of taking birth from the lord of Devas.

एकेनांशेन देवेशं प्रविष्टा देवसत्तमम। न विवेद तदा ब्रह्मा देवाश्चेन्द्रपुरोगमाः।।
ekenāṃśena deveśaṃ praviṣṭā devasattamam| na viveda tadā brahmā devāścendrapurogamāḥ||
Sūta said: She entered the lord of Devas the most excellent Deva only in part.[3] But Brahmā and Devas such as Indra and others did not know this.

गिरिजां पूर्ववच्छंभोर दृष्ट्वा पार्श्वस्थितां शुभाम। मायया मोहितस्तस्याः सर्वज्ञो ऽपि चतुर्मुखः।।
girijāṃ pūrvavacchaṃbhor dṛṣṭvā pārśvasthitāṃ śubhām| māyayā mohitastasyāḥ sarvajño 'pi caturmukhaḥ||
Sūta said: On seeing the splendid daughter of the lord of the mountains stationed by the side of the lord as before, even the omniscient four-faced lord Brahmā was deluded by her Māyā.

सा प्रविष्टा तनुं तस्य देवदेवस्य पार्वती। कण्ठस्थेन विषेणास्य तनुं चक्रे तदात्मनः।।
sā praviṣṭā tanuṃ tasya devadevasya pārvatī| kaṇṭhasthena viṣeṇāsya tanuṃ cakre tadātmanaḥ||
Sūta said: Having entered the body of the lord of Devas, Pārvatī made her own body out of poison in the neck of the lord.
Tāṇḍava dance of Śiva - Verse 14

तां च ज्ञात्वा तथाभूतां तृतीयेनेक्षणेन वै। ससर्ज कालीं कामारिः कालकण्ठीं कपर्दिनीम।।
tāṃ ca jñātvā tathābhūtāṃ tṛtīyenekṣaṇena vai| sasarja kālīṃ kāmāriḥ kālakaṇṭhīṃ kapardinīm||
Sūta said: On coming to know of this the enemy of Kāma (i.e., Śiva) created Kali the blue-necked goddess with matted hair from his third eye.
Tāṇḍava dance of Śiva - Verse 15

जाता यदा कालिमकालकण्ठी जाता तदानीं विपुला जयश्रीः। देवेतराणामजयस्त्वसिद्ध्या तुष्टिर्भवान्याः परमेश्वरस्य।।
jātā yadā kālimakālakaṇṭhī jātā tadānīṃ vipulā jayaśrīḥ| devetarāṇāmajayastvasiddhyā tuṣṭirbhavānyāḥ parameśvarasya||
Sūta said: When the black-necked goddess was born the glory of victory too originated. Now Bhavānī and Parameśvara were sure to inflict defeat over the demon.
Tāṇḍava dance of Śiva - Verse 16

जातां तदानीं सुरसिद्धसंघा दृष्ट्वा भयाद दुद्रुवुर अग्निकल्पाम। कालीं गरालंकृतकालकण्ठीम उपेन्द्रपद्मोद्भवशक्रमुख्याः।।
jātāṃ tadānīṃ surasiddhasaṃghā dṛṣṭvā bhayād dudruvur agnikalpām| kālīṃ garālaṃkṛtakālakaṇṭhīm upendrapadmodbhavaśakramukhyāḥ||
Sūta said: On seeing Kālī who resembled fire and whose black neck was embellished with poison, taking her origin, Devas and Siddhas, the chief of whom were Viṣṇu, Brahmā and Indra, fled, due to fright.

तथैव जातं नयनं ललाटे सितांशुलेखा च शिरस्युदग्रा। कण्ठे करालं निशितं त्रिशूलं करे करालं च विभूषणानि।।
tathaiva jātaṃ nayanaṃ lalāṭe sitāṃśulekhā ca śirasyudagrā| kaṇṭhe karālaṃ niśitaṃ triśūlaṃ kare karālaṃ ca vibhūṣaṇāni||
Sūta said: Similarly, an eye manifested itself in the forehead, the exalted contour of the crescent moon on the head, the terrible poison in the neck, the sharp and the terrible trident in the arm and the ornaments in their respective places.

सार्धं दिव्यांबरा देव्याः सर्वाभरणभूषिताः। सिद्धेन्द्रसिद्धाश च तथा पिशाचा जज्ञिरे पुनः।।
sārdhaṃ divyāṃbarā devyāḥ sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ| siddhendrasiddhāś ca tathā piśācā jajñire punaḥ||
Sūta said: Along with the goddess were born the lords of Siddhas as well as Piśācas who wore divine garments and who were bedecked in ornaments.

आज्ञया दारुकं तस्याः पार्वत्याः परमेश्वरी। दानवं सूदयामास सूदयन्तं सुराधिपान।।
ājñayā dārukaṃ tasyāḥ pārvatyāḥ parameśvarī| dānavaṃ sūdayāmāsa sūdayantaṃ surādhipān||
Sūta said: At the behest of Pārvatī, the great goddess slew the demon Dāruka who used to attack and kill the chiefs among Devas.

संरंभातिप्रसंगाद वै तस्याः सर्वमिदं जगत। क्रोधाग्निना च विप्रेन्द्राः संबभूव तदातुरम।।
saṃraṃbhātiprasaṃgād vai tasyāḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat| krodhāgninā ca viprendrāḥ saṃbabhūva tadāturam||
Sūta said: O leading brahmins, by virtue of impetuosity, and the fire of anger, the entire universe became agitated.

भवो ऽपि बालरूपेण श्मशाने प्रेतसंकुले। रुरोद मायया तस्याः क्रोधाग्निं पातुम ईश्वरः।।
bhavo 'pi bālarūpeṇa śmaśāne pretasaṃkule| ruroda māyayā tasyāḥ krodhāgniṃ pātum īśvaraḥ||
Sūta said: Bhava assumed the form of a boy due to his power of Māyā and stationed himself in the cremation ground full of corpses and ghosts. īśvara, then cried in order to quaff the fire of her anger.

तं दृष्ट्वा बालमीशानं मायया तस्य मोहिता। उत्थाप्याघ्राय वक्षोजं स्तनं सा प्रददौ द्विजाः।।
taṃ dṛṣṭvā bālamīśānaṃ māyayā tasya mohitā| utthāpyāghrāya vakṣojaṃ stanaṃ sā pradadau dvijāḥ||
Sūta said: O brahmins, on seeing the boy, who was actually Īśāna the goddess was deluded by his Māyā. She took him, kissed him on his head and suckled him at her breasts.

स्तनजेन तदा सार्धं कोपमस्याः पपौ पुनः। क्रोधेनानेन वै बालः क्षेत्राणां रक्षको ऽभवत।।
stanajena tadā sārdhaṃ kopamasyāḥ papau punaḥ| krodhenānena vai bālaḥ kṣetrāṇāṃ rakṣako 'bhavat||
Sūta said: Along with her breast-milk the boy quaffed up her warth also and he became the protector of the holy centres.
Tāṇḍava dance of Śiva - Verse 24

मूर्तयो ऽष्टौ च तस्यापि क्षेत्रपालस्य धीमतः। एवं वै तेन बालेन कृता सा क्रोधमूर्छिता।।
mūrtayo 'ṣṭau ca tasyāpi kṣetrapālasya dhīmataḥ| evaṃ vai tena bālena kṛtā sā krodhamūrchitā||
Sūta said: He assumed eight[4] physical forms for his manifestation as the intelligent protector of holy centres. Thus, her excessive anger was ceased by that boy.

कृतमस्याः प्रसादार्थं देवदेवेन ताण्डवम। संध्यायां सर्वभूतेन्द्रैः प्रेतैः प्रीतेन शूलिना।।
kṛtamasyāḥ prasādārthaṃ devadevena tāṇḍavam| saṃdhyāyāṃ sarvabhūtendraiḥ pretaiḥ prītena śūlinā||
Sūta said: In order to propitiate her, the delighted tridentbearing lord of Devas performed the tāṇḍava dance at dusk, along with the ghosts and leaders of goblins. After quaffing the nectar-like dance of Śiva upto the throat [i.e. after enjoying the dance of Śiva very much] Parameśvarī danced in the midst of ghosts, happily along with Yoginīs. Devas all round, including Brahmā, Indra and Viṣṇu, bowed to and eulogised Kālī and then prayed to the goddess Pārvatī. Thus, the Tāṇḍava of the trident-bearing lord has been briefly mentioned to you. Others[5] are of the opinion that the Tāṇḍava of the lord is due to the Bliss of yoga.

पीत्वा नृत्यामृतं शंभोर आकण्ठं परमेश्वरी। ननर्त सा च योगिन्यः प्रेतस्थाने यथासुखम।।
